LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL From time to time, there are pivotal moments in the life of a school—moments in which an institution takes a step forward, providing both immediate programmatic benefits and long-term opportunities. In the 2022-2023 school year, Dutchess Day School made another monumental step forward in our effort to provide immediate programmatic benefits for your children and long-term strategic opportunities for the institution.

This was accomplished by the purchase of a twenty-acre property and home situated directly across the street from the Dutchess Day School athletic fields.

Through strategic financial planning and generous bequests, we were fortunate to be able to make this acquisition. Over the course of the summer, Laura and I moved to the next Head of School’s house on the far side of our expanded, fifty-acre campus. In the former Head of School’s House, renovations were completed for a new Lower School Library, Academic Support Office, and faculty housing. In the original library we began renovation for a robust Design & Innovation Center to develop student’s creative, collaborative, and technological skills for the 21st century. Finally, through the generous support of this year’s gala, Supporting Dutchess Day, and the Joy of Outdoor Learning and Play, our playground received a much needed renovation to ensure our students have an environment for active and imaginative play each day. This was truly a transformative year for Dutchess Day School!

While our changes are exciting and new, you should see that the heart and essence of Dutchess Day School remains. As you peruse these pages, I hope that you are inspired to engage in the vibrant community of Dutchess Day School. TUNNELTALK AFTER SCHOOL t The Afterschool Program is for students in grades K through 4 and is an opportunity for children to explore their interests and engage in fun activities.

The program offers a wide range of activities, including outdoor fun, sports, painting, LEGO, and dance classes.

The program is staffed by experienced and qualified professionals who are passionate about working with children.

It provides a well-rounded experience that enriches children’s lives and prepares them for success.

t GRANDPARENTS DAY OCTOBER 28 Over 100 grandparents joined their grandchildren for an afternoon of classroom activities and outdoor play.

At the end of school day, grandparents headed to the fields for the Fall Social to enjoy the sports games, live music, and a BBQ.

t FAMILY STYLE LUNCH DDS Lunch is a hallmark at Dutchess Day. The school chef prepares family style meals for students and faculty to enjoy together. Soup and an expansive salad bar are offered every day.

t FIRETRUCKS OCTOBER 19 When learning about community helpers, both PK3 and PK4 classes had a visit from the Millbrook Fire Department. According to the children, it was the “best day ever” as they were able to climb aboard one of the firetrucks and sit inside the vehicle. Before climbing into the truck, the children enjoyed a presentation by the firefighters where they learned how to keep safe during a fire, what a firefighter looks like when they wear all of their gear, and what they sound like when they have their oxygen tank turned on with their mask.

t DEAR Students in PK3 to fourth grade enjoy D.E.A.R. time together throughout the spring and fall. D.E.A.R. is an acronym for Drop Everything and Read. When the weather permits, students gather in the lower school courtyard to read independently or with a buddy.

APRIL 5 As part of a unit on body systems, the third grade scientists had the opportunity to dissect owl pellets. The students learned how our digestive system is similar, yet very different, to that of an owl.

Students looked closely at the bones to determine the types of bones as well as what species of animal the bones belonged to.

While many of the 2023-2024 co-curriculars, such as art, music, technology, and wellness, have always been included in our curriculum in some form, and wellness, yearbook, and the sixth and eighth grade plays were requirements, students had a few new opportunities to choose from. Art concentrations included ceramics, set design, fiber arts, digital photography, sculpture, and printmaking. Robotics, 2D and 3D design, presentations, Book Creator, and newscasting were among the tech options. Thanks to a donation from current parents Andrew and Ashley Spence archery was a welcome new addition to our enrichment offerings, led by Director of Building and Grounds Mr. Shook.

CONCERTS & PERFORMING ARTS

CONCERTS Dutchess Day School’s music curriculum is comprised of a balanced and sequential program of singing, playing instruments, listening, improvising, composing, and moving to music. Our multifaceted approach is reflected in both our curriculum and our scheduling. Each student receives two 40-minute classes on a weekly basis. Within these classes, they learn about the different eras of music, leading artists, and diverse genres of music from around the world.

The music theory component of our curriculum teaches students about the essential elements of music: melody, rhythm, harmony, form, and expression. These concepts are explored through a variety of activities tailored to each students’ knowledge in music theory. Music theory is integrated within the playing of various instruments, score study, sight singing, and using music software.

Our Upper School Chorus & Ensemble program offers our students the choice of participating in one of the following five options: chorus, string, wind, and two levels of jazz/rock ensembles. Within these groups, our students explore a diverse array of music, including classical, spiritual/gospel, folk, and contemporary pieces. Students in chorus work on vocal concepts such as proper breathing, vowel placement, diction, posture, and harmonizing.

Our choruses and ensembles perform in winter and spring concerts. Furthermore, the spring recital and NYSSMA festivals offer the opportunity for our students to perform challenging solos and to receive supportive feedback.

FOURTH GRADE PLAY The fourth-grade play, Character Matters III: Empathy Training was a true display of talent and dedication from the students. They took on the roles of beloved storybook characters, including Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Thumbelina, to showcase the importance of empathy and what it means to be an empathetic individual.

The two entertaining performances were a result of their hard work, commitment, and teamwork. From memorizing their lines to being in harmony with their music, the students truly embraced the world of theater and all it had to offer.

The incorporation of a theater production into the curriculum allowed the students to develop newfound self-confidence and support for one another, skills that they will carry with them throughout their lives. Overall, the fourth-grade play was a huge success and demonstrated the positive impact of arts education here at Dutchess Day.

SIXTH GRADE PLAY Donning caps and canvas bags, the class of 2025 took the Dutchess Day community back in a time machine to New York City in 1899 to tell the incredible true story of the monumental newsboy strike that helped create positive change for hundreds of “newsies” in Manhattan and the outer boroughs who were being taken advantage of by the big newspaper tycoons of the time, like William Randolph Hearst. Under the direction of upper school English teacher Natasha Panzer, the class worked diligently for six weeks to learn their lines and blocking. Bill Fiore managed the musical direction and Bonnie Byrnes led the students through their choreography. Not only did the class learn the importance of working together to pull off a large group project, but they also learned that the same kind of dedication and collaboration can lead to groundbreaking historic reform.

EIGHTH GRADE PLAY Our eighth grade play this year was the 1988 Tony Award winner Into the Woods, a brilliant exploration of “happily ever after.”

The Baker and his Wife go off into the woods in hopes of freeing themselves of a witch’s evil curse.

There they encounter a host of fairy tale characters who are trying to realize wishes of their own.

It was fascinating to watch the cast enter Sondheim and Lapine’s complex musical as individuals and exit with a heightened awareness of the moral consequence of our aspirations as a unified ensemble. In the finale, the audience and the cast were reminded that there are times when each of us must journey into the woods to learn new and transformational lessons.

BEYOND the

FENCEPOST

DUTCHESS COUNTY, NY The first-grade class embarked on an exciting series of field trips that broadened their horizons and sparked their curiosity. They visited Ruby Hill Farm, where they immersed themselves in the wonders of farm life and connected with nature.

Other field trips included Cary Institute, the Bardavon Theater, and the Trevor Zoo.

NEW YORK, NY On Thursday, May 11, the DDS fifth-grade class took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

This was the culmination of two years studying ancient civilizations.

Highlights included the rooftop sculpture by artist Lauren Halsey, and the Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome exhibits.

MILLBROOK, NY At Trotwood Farm the preschool 3-year-old class took a hayride to see two miniature cows and chickens. The children got to feed the chickens and give treats to the cows. The class then ventured to the garden on a hayride, where they watched a planting demonstration and each student got to plant their own seeds.

MILLBROOK, NY The second graders study insects in science and a field trip to the Cary Institute enabled these scientists to put their studies to work. It allowed students to get hands-on experience capturing and analyzing all different kinds of bugs using microscopes, nets, and clear containers.

WASHINGTON, DC During their week in Washington, D.C., eighth graders applied the history they learned in class and related it to what they saw. From being on the battleground at Gettysburg, immersing themselves in facts about historical figures and events at our national monuments, and visiting George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon, to witnessing the original Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence at the National Archives, the class garnered a new appreciation for our country’s history.

TAKE TO THE FIELDS

ATHLETICS & PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Dutchess Day School athletic program was a dynamic and integral part of the total educational experience during the 2022-2023 school year. Students worked hard to develop their skills, resilience, and character throughout the seasons, while making memories that will last a lifetime. Our athletes were successful throughout the year and several teams enjoyed exceptional seasons.

Our varsity soccer team clinched the overall win in the 7v7 Tournament in the fall and the volleyball team was undefeated in the winter. The athletic department also organized several special events, including a field hockey clinic at Hotchkiss and a girls’ lacrosse meet up at Vassar College. The variety of sports offered at Dutchess Day is a testament to the dedication of our hardworking coaches, supportive administrative leaders, and our incredible community.

SERVICE LEARNING

What is an Iron Giraffe Challenge? It is a call to action to help raise funds to help build wells in Africa.

For the past three summers, the incoming 7th graders have read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, which is an incredible story of perseverance and survival. Part of the story is the true-life account of how Salva Dut, who was a young boy at the time, escaped the violence of civil war in South Sudan. He later returned to help his country fix their devastating water issues by creating a non-profit organization called Water for South Sudan.

Water for South Sudan has been a force for incredible positive change in Africa. The class of 2024 felt inspired to help Salva continue his important work and a goal was set to raise $1000 to donate to this incredible organization. The 7th grade made a presentation to the entire upper school on Wednesday, March 29 to teach them about the situation in Africa and how these wells can change lives in so many ways. Then the class organized a community fundraiser to get the entire school involved. They were able to double their goal and raised $2,170! This year’s 7th Grade class is also planning a fundraiser and is motivated to beat last year’s total.

Moved By Music In the spring, we had several music visitors. Twenty-one-year-old Nathan Lee’s gentle and inviting manner emboldened children to ask many questions, including how long it takes him to memorize a piece, whether Nathan is nervous when he performs (yes), and how he learned to play so fast (start slow and then go faster). Nathan described his need to play music akin to the need to eat or drink. He made his New York debut at sixteen in The Peter Marino Concert, opening the YCA Series at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall.

Nathan won First Prize in the 2016 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and holds the Mortimer Levitt Piano Chair. This assembly was made possible through a collaboration between Wethersfield Estate & Garden and Young Concert Artists. Wethersfield Estate & Garden, located in Amenia, is widely considered to be the best Italianate Garden in the United States, with a mission to support conservation and habitat protection, as well as

classical and neo-classical arts.

Upper school students had the chance to learn dances from different cultures. The 6th graders performed Dandiya, a traditional folk dance from India. Dandiya is referred to as the stick dance because dancers hold and use colorful sticks. The dance is performed at several events, including the Navrati Festival, which celebrates the Mother Goddess.

The 7th graders performed Maku Lei-Lei, a dance which originated in Angola, Africa, and was brought to Brazil by enslaved people. The dance our students learned was one performed by people preparing for battle. In performance, this powerful dance builds community and expresses the people’s deep spirit.

Where Art Thou?

BY NATASHA PANZER This year, Dutchess Day School awarded their travel grant to me, and I could not have been more grateful and excited to plan a trip to England and Scotland to further extend my knowledge of William Shakespeare and his plays. In late July, I set out to learn more about some of the plays I love most.

Accompanied by my daughter Sofia, DDS class of ’21, I spent two weeks exploring London and the lowlands of Scotland on a self-guided Shakespeare tour.

Having previously spent a week in Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon, I focused this trip on learning more about the plays I teach at Dutchess Day. My first stop was Glasgow, where I met with the head of the English department at the University of Glasgow, Professor Adrian Streete. After a tour of this venerable school, founded in 1451, Professor Streete answered my 16

questions about the significance of teaching Shakespeare today and we had a lively conversation about Macbeth, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Romeo and Juliet.

After our talk, I spent the afternoon enjoying the incredible museums at the University of Glasgow. Did you know that the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland? My kind of place!

While I spent several days exploring Glasgow from top to bottom, Sofia, who is currently a junior at the Frederick Gunn School in Washington, Connecticut, studied acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Every day was filled with surprising little finds, like stumbling upon the National Piping Centre, finding the gravesite of William Miller,

who wrote the famous Scottish nursery rhyme “Wee Willy Winkie,” and riding the marvelously efficient Glasgow underground, which only goes two ways in an oval, and has seats of bright orange, fuzzy plaid.

We were both grateful to get to know this fascinating city!

Next, we hit the road towards “Macbeth Country” to visit many important settings in the play. After a breathtaking drive along Loch Lomond and through the verdant Trossachs National Park, we reached Collace, Perthshire, with fields of rolling barley ringed by small forests and rock-strewn hills. We visited Scone Palace, the ceremonial crowning place of the Scottish kings (including Macbeth), which was guarded by peacocks. There I had the opportunity to wield a long sword, just like the one Macbeth would have used and sit on the stone of destiny (not the real one). We tracked down the last remaining oak still standing from the legendary Birnam Wood and located Dunsinane Hill, Macbeth’s final stronghold in the play. The ancient ruins of an Iron Age fort are still visible on top.

After an adventurous jaunt crisscrossing Perth and Fife, and a quick stop off at St. Andrews, where the rain on the beach pelted us mercilessly, we headed south towards Edinburgh, making a stop at Loch Leven, where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner, but later made a daring escape. We climbed up to Edinburgh Castle (again in driving rain) to visit the “real” stone of destiny, featured in Macbeth, which King Charles III recently sat upon during his coronation. According to a secret source, this too is a replica. The real stone is believed by some to be buried up on Dunsinane Hill, which I Continued on page 29

Excellence By Design

D

ERIVED FROM LATIN, THE TERM CURRICULUM has evolved from its first denotation of a racecourse to an educational journey made in steps.

In both the archaic and modern meanings, a curriculum has a beginning and an end, a starting point and a destination. Building upon this notion of an educational journey with a desired outcome, Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe wrote what would become an educational classic, Understanding by Design.

Understanding by Design (UBD) is a framework for designing curricula, a course of study, individual classes, and specific units. Sometimes referred to as “backwards by design,” the framework begins at the end, with the identification of desired outcomes, moves to the creation of assessments that measure whether or not arrival at those outcomes occurred, and finishes by the drafting of curricula and experiences to meet the desired outcomes.

While this methodical planning process may seem 18

natural, all too often, schools and educators first begin with the content that needs to be covered, craft lessons to ensure that the content is delivered, and finish by administering assessments to reveal what was learned.

UBD, by comparison, allows for educators to focus on the enduring understandings and essential questions every child must comprehend upon the completion of a course; in short, higher order thinking.

This intentional approach is not new to Dutchess Day School, and can be seen in many aspects of our work.

Last year, the Committee for Educational Excellence planned “backwards” by painting a Portrait of a Dutchess Day School Graduate.

By codifying and affirming “desired outcomes,” in the domains of Character & Integrity, Knowledge & Inquiry, Citizenship & Civility, and Skills & Expertise, our faculty can plan the experiences, a “learning itinerary” to ensure our students’ arrival over the course of the Dutchess Day educational journey!

Jeremy and his wife, Joyann, have been coming to Millbrook for over a decade to enjoy the area's natural beauty and the wonderful community.

Permanent residents since 2020, the Michaels have a kindergartener, Sienna, who has been at DDS since she was three years old. They have loved watching her thrive and grow into a self-sufficient, school-loving five-year-old. An avid outdoorsman, Jeremy loves watching his daughter grow up close to nature and at a school that values community, activity, and well-rounded students.

Born and raised in Lebanon, Ohio, Jeremy received his B.A. from Vanderbilt University. He moved to Manhattan to join Lehman Brothers Natural Resources Group in 1999. He led the group for six years under the Barclays franchise and is now a co-chairman of that same group. He and his family actively support the DLC, Salvation Army, Angels of Light, and Children's International.

He is thrilled to join the board of DDS.

Welcome Back Kim Barone Kim Barone has rejoined Dutchess Day as the new fifth grade teacher, after teaching third grade here for several years. Before returning to DDS, Kim immersed herself in the world of teaching English as a New Language, Special Education, and general education at a local school district. She attended Dominican University on an academic and athletic scholarship, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in childhood education. She later earned her master's degree in special education at SUNY New Paltz. Kim has three children: Johnny (11), Evelyn (8) and Colton (5). Baseball is an important part of her family life, and she often spends her weekends travelling to tournaments. Kim 22

Welcome Andrew Cancro Andrew Cancro is joining DDS as a physical education teacher. He is a recent graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 2022. While at Cortland, Andrew was a member of both the men’s club soccer team and the men’s club rugby team.

Prior to attending SUNY Cortland, he played competitive soccer for several years. Andrew is the oldest of three children. Sports are a passion the entire Cancro family shares. He is extremely excited to begin his teaching career at Dutchess Day.

Masters in Social Work at Columbia University. She will be teaching wellness, helping to shape the advisory curriculum, and serving as a general counseling resource for students and faculty. Erin is currently on a year sabbatical from working at Millbrook School, where she is the

Senior Associate Director of College Counseling. In addition to the college office, her other roles at Millbrook have included chair of the English department, English teacher, varsity volleyball coach, and advisor. Prior to starting at Millbrook 14 years ago, Erin worked as an English teacher and varsity volleyball coach for four years at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. A Los Angeles native, she attended undergrad at Davidson College and has a Masters in English from Middlebury College. Erin and her husband Jon have loved the DDS community since Jon served on the board for 6 years - before they even had children in attendance! Now, they are proud DDS parents of Atticus (6th), Aurora (4th), and Finley (1st). When she’s not driving her kids around New England for sports, Erin loves doing anything active, reading, and cooking. She is thrilled to be back in the classroom and working with the kids and faculty she adores so much.

Welcome Errol King Errol King is a multi-faceted professional with a diverse background spanning education, creative technology, AI research, and social entrepreneurship. Hailing from the vibrant borough of the Bronx, he embarked on his career journey by spearheading communications and technology strategy as the Director of New Media at 1199SEIU, one of the largest labor unions in the United States. His primary focus was harnessing technology to advocate for improved living wages and healthcare benefits for essential healthcare workers. Driven by a profound passion for inspiring young minds, Errol transitioned from his labor union role to explore the thrilling intersection of gaming, education, and technology. In doing so, he co-founded Hidden Level Games, an indie gaming studio dedicated to empowering players by immersing them in the world of

coding, thus enabling them to transform from mere participants to creators. Errol's visionary leadership played a pivotal role in the design and development of a virtual world where students could collaboratively construct and share games through the cloud. He took this groundbreaking platform on a global tour, personally instructing and instilling the principles of design thinking and game programming in youth from various corners of the world. Following his tenure at Hidden Level Games, Errol embarked on a journey at Google, where he dedicated nearly a decade to launching a suite of innovative education programs and later venturing into the realm of generative AI products. His commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and innovation extends beyond his professional life, as he finds joy in diverse interests such as gardening, basketball, tai chi, and a

variety of other eclectic pursuits.

Errol is not only a dedicated professional, but also a devoted parent, proudly guiding the paths of Heru, currently in the third grade, and Sahar, who is in kindergarten.

Errol joins DDS’s Design and Innovation team dedicated to shaping a brighter future for the next generation.

Welcome Back Yolanda Mitchell Yolanda Mitchell is back this fall to teach Spanish at Dutchess Day School. Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, she emigrated to the United States in the mid 80s and moved to the Hudson Valley in 1993, where she raised her two children, Jennifer and David.

Yolanda earned a degree in translation studies from Instituto Tecnológico Latino-Inglés, in Bogotá, Colombia, then went on to earn a Certificate in Translation Studies from New York University School of Continuing Education. She has studied in Paris and London, earning an advanced certificate in French 24

Language and Civilization from la Sorbonne and a University of Cambridge English Proficiency Certificate from Westminster College.

Yolanda began her teaching career at the Melrose School in Brewster, New York, where she taught Spanish and French at the elementary and middle school levels for 10 years.

Yolanda originally joined DDS in 2012 and took an early retirement in 2018 after many years teaching Spanish.

Even after her “retirement” Yolanda remained connected to DDS, subbing often, tutoring, coaching the tennis team, and offering a Spanish afterschool program.

Yolanda currently is living in Carmel, New York. When she is not teaching, she enjoys tennis, Zumba, hiking, walking, and kayaking.

Welcome Patrick Stewart Patrick’s lifelong passion for education began during his formative years in Bangor, Maine, where he grew up in a family of educators.

His dedication to education grew stronger while studying at Colby College, where he conducted extensive research on global independent schools.

Patrick’s professional career started as an educator teaching middle school math and coaching high school tennis in Central Maine.

After that, Patrick continued his passion for education in Dutchess County at Millbrook School as a math teacher, Director of Human Development, Girls’ Varsity Basketball coach, and community tennis instructor. He loved working with the students at Millbrook and seeing their growth in and out of the classroom.

Following his time at Millbrook, Patrick learned from incredible leaders and educators at Harvard

Graduate School of Education in the Education Leadership, Organization, and Entrepreneurship Program— focusing on School Leadership. His desire to support school communities through school leadership and love of Dutchess County led him to us at DDS. Patrick is excited to be back in the community working at DDS to help support student success in pursuing their best selves. Outside of his work in schools, Patrick loves staying active by playing tennis, hiking, and spending time outdoors.

He also loves to read, spend time with family, and has a particular affinity for the coast of Maine.

Welcome Jacob White Jacob White is joining Dutchess day School as the new Athletic Director and ski coach. Jacob brings extensive knowledge and experience that comes from working all over the world. He has been a ski coach, race team lead coach, personal and fitness trainer, nutritionist, health care specialist, combat medic, and children’s mentor in Australia, Japan, Europe, and America. Jacob is a firm believer that education is not a oneway street, but a dynamic exchange where teachers and students learn from each other. He is truly excited to be a part of the Dutchess Day family, and confident that, with collective efforts, he will contribute to creating a nurturing, empowering, and inspiring educational environment where both students and teachers thrive. He has been an athlete for all his life and enjoys staying physically active through biking, archery, and fishing. He enjoys spending time outdoors and traveling. His commitment to nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of curiosity perfectly aligns with our school's portrait of a graduate.

2008 Adam Baker lives in Oregon with his girlfriend. After six years in the semiconductor industry, he works for ASML as a technical service engineer for laser subsystems.

2014 Jack Ellis is living in Boulder, Colorado, after he graduated from CU Boulder last year with degrees in Spanish Language and Business.

Annabelle Duval was the salutatorian this spring when she graduated from Princeton. While at Princeton, Annabelle was awarded the Shapiro Prize for Academic Excellence for the 2020-2021 academic year; the William Koren, Jr., Memorial Prize in History; and the Stone/ Davis Prize Fellowship.

Annabelle was also a leader trainer for Princeton Outdoor Action and a member of the field hockey club. After graduation, Annabelle will be working in Brooklyn as a paralegal at the United States Attorney’s office in the Environmental Justice and Enforcement section.

Annabelle is planning on pursuing a law degree.

2016 Dominic Pelosi graduated from Colby College with a degree in American Studies.

2017 Hannah Wogalter is attending Marist College in Florence, Italy, studying art history and conservation.

He spent the summer of 2023 studying abroad in Cadiz, Spain.

2019 Braeden McCabe won Best Silent Film at the Oniros Film Awards and Best Under 18 Filmmaker at the Crown Wood International Film Festival for his short film, Game Night.

2021 Audrey Howarth is currently majoring in classical and jazz violin at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, Massachussetts. She was co-first violin/concert master

at the Manhattan School of Music summer program this year. Audrey performed in her first professional paying gig on June 6, 2023, at Carnegie Hall. The sold out concert featured musicians from Earth, Wind and Fire, as well as former DDS parent guitarist Paul Pesco.

This summer Sofia Panzer studied acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.

This November, she will play Henrietta Leavitt, the 20th century astronomer, in the Lauren Gundersen play Silent Sky at the Frederick Gunn School, in Washington, Connecticut, where she is currently a junior.

The Colman Family June 9 2023, marked the end of an era for Dutchess Day School as the youngest of the Colman Family, Anna, graduated. Four Colmans have now graduated from DDS and to date the Colman’s hold the record for the longest family run in the school’s history. To mark this milestone, we asked each member of the Colman family to share what DDS has meant to them.

Where Art Thou BY NATASHA PANZER learned firsthand is currently guarded by a field of cows and a famously inhospitable bull. No, I didn’t try to dodge the bull. Well played, Scots! Well played!

After navigating the treacherously slippery cobblestone hills of Edinburgh, we hopped on a train to London and were pleasantly surprised when we found ourselves sitting next to the actor Owen Teale, who played Alliser Thorne in Game of Thrones.

We ended our adventures in London at the Globe Theatre, a replica of the theatre William Shakespeare was part owner of in the early 1600s. As luck would have it, the Globe was presenting the very two plays I have chosen to teach this year. It was also a true delight to share the experience with my daughter, who had recently played the roles of both Titania and Hermia in her school’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

We came back in the evening for Macbeth. I look forward to sharing all the details with my students this winter when they take on these plays.

Overall, it was an incredible trip. We made new friends, conquered a few fears, and ate many memorable meals. I had been told by numerous people before my trip that Glasgow was a waste of time, a “rough” city that did not compare to Edinburgh. Now I can say that I hands-down disagree. Glasgow has a heartbeat and an authentic character. So many great inventors, scientists, and artists found motivation there, as did I. In addition to quenching my ever-growing Shakespeare curiosity, this trip reaffirmed my belief that life is much better when you do not blindly take on other people’s ideas as your own. Get out and experience the world, meet new people, form your own opinions, try new foods, and drive on the other side.

PARENT ASSOCIATION The parent association of Dutchess Day School is an organization of current parents and legal guardians that assists the head of school on non- academic matters and seeks to establish and maintain close cooperation between parents, students, faculty, administration, staff, and trustees in pro- moting the welfare of the school and its students.

The activities of the parent association (PA) include (but are not limited to) fall and spring socials, the book fair, the skating party, and bake sales. The organization meets between six and eight times during the academic year.

Torrential rains did not damper the glitz and glamour of the Red Carpet Gala. Current parents danced the night away to the music of Those Guys. Some of the items auctioned were a bee keeping mentorship, a catered dinner for six, Billy Joel concert tickets, and VIP parking in front of the school. When all was said and done, the school had raised over $265,000.
