The team navigate the narrow, winding canals through the Lac Alaotra marsh in canoes in search of gentle lemurs. This shot was taken from our drone and shows just how much more efficient aerial surveys of the 200 km 2 of marsh can be compared with traditional canoe surveys.
Legacy Story: Monitoring gentle lemurs in Madagascar

Inspired by regular trips to Jersey Zoo, UK supporter Nick Legon left a gift to Durrell in his Will. Some of Nick’s legacy enabled Durrell to purchase a drone and infrared camera equipment and send a team to Madagascar to trial a new monitoring technique for the critically endangered Alaotran gentle lemur. The new infrared drone is already having a measurable impact on our work towards rebuilding healthy wetlands for wildlife and the people who rely on them. We are hopeful that in the longer term this exciting technology can be adapted for use at other sites and with other species in Madagascar.
There is no first world and third world. There is only one world, for all of us to live and delight in GERALD DURRELL
