THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON On the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing, OMEGA is reflecting on the golden moments that defined that iconic day. While our own Speedmaster was strapped to the wrists of the astronauts, George Clooney was looking up towards the moon where his heroes were making history.

Inimitable Luxury General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, Bernard de Villèle reveals the unique qualities that make The Ritz-Carlton a legendary name in the world of hospitality. 01 General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, Bernard de Villèle

Congratulations on finishing your first year at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. How would you describe this experience so far? I am enjoying the ride. It’s an extraordinary country. Every Friday, I like to take the small roads on my HarleyDavidson and discover the real Bahrain. For me, the real Bahrain is the Bahraini people. I’ve been touched by their kindness, their authenticity, and their generosity. I discover this every day, at each interaction. You are in a different place here. This island Kingdom is incredible and our resort is stunning. I am also thankful to our incredible ownership for their constant support in making our resort the best in the region.

What has been the biggest challenge for you during the first year? I don’t see them as challenges, I see them as opportunities. And the number one opportunity I’ve had, is to grow with an incredible company. I’ve been working all my life, for some of the biggest hospitality brands in the world, but Ritz-Carlton has the best culture I’ve ever come across in my career. We have 12 values here, and today’s value was “build a strong relationship and create a Ritz-Carlton guest for life”. It’s extraordinary. These golden standards of

018-021 Bernard D44.indd 18

ours enable you to be a much better person because you have to live them every day. If you apply these principles to your daily life, you will see a difference in your overall wellbeing as you go about your day, making a difference in people’s lives.

How does the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain set itself apart from the local competition? Our resort is like no other in the Kingdom. We have 1-mile of white sandy beach, 23 seafront villas, 12 restaurants, an award-winning Ritz-Carlton Spa, a private marina with daily Pearl 1 excursions, weekend Zen Island barbecue experience, and a unique Ritz Kids Club and activity program for the little ones. The only competition we have is ourselves. But most of all, what sets us apart, are our “Ladies and Gentlemen” who enliven the senses and well-being of our guests daily. They are the ones who truly bring the Ritz-Carlton experience to life.

What are the most popular offerings at THE Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain? Our 3-bedroom seafront villas with infinity pools are truly unique as well as our private function room facilities, including our newest

by the desire to excel and be relentless in terms of detail, which when put together, create a canvas of excellence. You need to lead with both empathy and accountability and make a difference in your ladies and gentlemen’s lives. You have to elevate and energize them with your constant positivity. You need to be driven by innovation and passion to be better and do better with each passing day. This is why at The Ritz-Carlton we do things “a la grande,” because at the center of it all are our guests, who together with our ladies and gentlemen are our number one priority.

What is generally considered your busy season at The RitzCarlton, Bahrain? Is it a noticeable difference?

Are there any upcoming events or announcements you’d like to share with us?

Our busy season commences in mid-September straight through to the end of April. However, our Sales & Marketing team is successfully promoting Bahrain to European sun seekers who represent 35% of our business year-round.

In your opinion, what are the necessary qualities needed to be a successful manager in hospitality? The role of a leader is to unveil the talent within each person. You need to be totally consumed

We are on a permanent quest to innovate, add value and enhance the guest experience. We have recently opened the smallest fine dining restaurant in the Middle East, La Table Krug by Y. And soon will be opening a new Royal Beach Club fitness studio as well as some exciting spa enhancements. However there are many more exciting projects in the pipeline that I look forward to sharing with you soon. ritzcarlton.com/bahrain tel:+97317580000

Host of Talents Director of Talent and Culture at Sofitel Bahrain, Huda Mirza reveals what makes her passionate about the hospitality industry and employment culture. Why do you find the hospitality industry so fascinating? Working in hotels and resorts is demanding, but passion outweighs all the cons. Being passionate means being fully alive and enthusiastic. It is about experiencing emotions, feelings and indulging in something that you love so it does not feel like work anymore. You live for and with people. You are curious about them and need to interact with all sorts of different individuals to feel alive. The hospitality industry is full of interesting people: colleagues, clients, visitors, suppliers, you name it. You have the chance to work as a host with travelers from a wide range of cultures, coming from many different horizons. Hotels receive an incredible number of international travelers from all over the world, bringing habits and ways of being that may be different from yours. So fascinating! In addition to that, the industry’s workforce is increasingly diverse. You have the chance to work in a team with people who have different views of life, bringing creative ideas you had never envisioned before and are inspired from where they come from.

What makes you passionate about your role as the Director of Talent and Culture? My passion for innovation, commitment to collaborate, and desire to enhance the workplace more vibrant and engaging moment after moment. Talent and Culture is a metaphor for the social workplace, where participants share ideas and 01 offer peer support through engaging digital forums,

022-023 Huda Interview D44.indd 22

dynamic group meetings, and empowerment. We connect and engage professionals who want to understand and shape the human aspects of the business. My day starts simply by going around the hotel and greeting all of them to find out how they feel and what they need. Depending on their responses, every day is different. Since the industry is currently going through a full transformation, the daily challenges are even more exciting. I have to ask myself: “How can I integrate employees in this transformation and nurture their creativity and motivation?” To achieve this, I do everything from the heart, with open ears and open arms.

What is your take on employment culture in Bahrain? What are the major pros and cons of Bahrain’s employment culture and workforce strength? The number of Bahrain’s workers has exceeded 158,000 during the first half of year 2018 due to the remarkable improvement in the employment of Bahrainis in the private sector. Recruitment movement has further improved during this year, noting that a total of 12,108 Bahrainis had been recruited during the first six months of 2018, or 2,000 per month compared with 1,900 during the same period of 2017. Women are highly considered and well placed in the Bahraini professional workspace and society than in many other Arab countries. While female employment was traditionally limited to education and medicine, local women increasingly work in banking, finance, and service industries too. Bahraini women can be

found in all sorts of professions. Local candidates understand the culture in which they live. That means they can navigate potential problems with greater ease. That usually translates to higher productivity and a decrease in financial loss, if any. Hiring local means diversifying the workforce. It also gives a company a better chance at growing business in many different directions. Bahraini workforce is highly ambitious and keen on start-ups and business approach, which sometimes make it difficult to find the right job fit at the right time. Some jobs require international work experiences, which limit the number of job applicants from local market. Number of applicants are improving dramatically year after year, which is a strong indicator.

What are the biggest obstacles facing women worldwide today? It has been a historic year for women. There are more women serving in industry than ever before, and a record number are currently entrepreneurs. However, with these significant gains, women around the world can still find gender equality elusive. One of the struggles that underlies it all is the continued lack of women in positions of power. From corporate boardrooms to the courts and political leadership around the world, the lack of women in senior positions continues to stymie progress on various issues. The sooner we understand that the lack of women in leadership roles holds back not only women, but all people, the sooner we will be able to advance society as a whole. I believe a key to tackling the challenges we face is ensuring women are at the table, making decisions. Something I’ve seen over and over again in my own career is that women in power bring a different perspective – an essential perspective.

What are your greatest professional achievements? I have received several accolades as a role model for young Bahraini women. The most memorable one was under the patronage of His Majesty King

17/06/2019 13:16

Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, in celebration of the 46th Bahrain National Day. I had the esteemed privilege of receiving the prestigious award honored to a selected outstanding and talented group of personnel from Bahrain who have shined within the private sector. To conclude my achievements, I am extremely honored to be recognized by the Kingdom of Bahrain for the youth development project by Tamkeen. There were several young professionals who graduated under the designed program and are working successfully in many sectors of the Kingdom.

What are the top trends in the hospitality industry in 2019? Many hotels are making their websites mobileoptimized and providing mobile apps to encourage potential customers to browse through hotel services, view hotel images, and more. It’s one of the ongoing hotel industry trends to provide the most seamless and fastest browsing experience to guests through smartphones, where guests can use the digital key to speed up and efficiently undergo the check-in procedure. This is exactly what guests need to gain instant access to their rooms. Technology has become critical for attracting and retaining hotel guests. Today, one of the most notable hotel industry trends is that hotels are using instant messages as a business tool to enhance customer experience. Instant messaging has transformed how potential guests and hotels communicate with each other. Billions of people around the world are using social media, and the numbers are increasing day by day. The advanced technology has made it possible to reach out to the audience through multiple platforms. Technology is constantly evolving, and as the hotel technology providers are walking abreast with these trends and demands, even the hotel and the hotel staff need to be in line with these trends. 81% of online customers still read reviews on TripAdvisor, Google, Booking. com, and other trusted sites before booking a room in a hotel. The online reputation management tool for hotels is not just a trend in 2019, but also a critical requirement for every hotelier. This is because consumer behavior and booking pattern has changed greatly and will continue to change at a rapid pace in the coming times. You can say those travel influencers are the new generation of reviewers that often provide a real-life experience of different hotels and their services through travel blogs and usergenerated content on social media. This is one hotel industry trend you shouldn’t miss at all! It’s no surprise that millennials live lifestyles that are vastly different from previous generations. They have access to technology that is far beyond anything that has ever been available before.

022-023 Huda Interview D44.indd 23

What are your future career aspirations? To make a difference in the society through my portfolio and by advocating the integration of people with limited mobility, gender diversity, multigenerational synergy, and cultural diversity. I believe gender diversity is a crucial issue in our society and we can raise awareness about it on various platforms. We can create opportunities for people with limited mobility. Co-mentoring the youth on multigenerational synergy. Recognize, showcase and share our cultural differences to excel in what we do. www.sofitel.accorhotels.com/hotel/Bahrain

Somber Surrealism known for her haunting portraits and delicate gold and silver leaf work, Palestinian artist Marwa Najjar’s works focuses on the human form and its many fascinating and intriguing aspects. Her surreal portrayal of the female form and unique color scheme put her paintings in a league of their own. She is also known for her collaborations with various NGOs in Jordan and Palestine.

When did you realize your destiny was in the art world?

How would you describe your style? Is it modern or traditional?

My interest in art started at a young age. My father was an artist and an architect, so I suppose you can say that I grew up with it. In a way, I feel like I didn’t choose art, but it chose me.

I prefer not to classify my work within a particular category. However, if I were to classify it, I would say that I am more of a contemporary realist. But, in general, I never define myself within a certain school in the art world.

What made you choose gold and silver leaves to create your art?

02

024-026 Marwa Najar Artist 1 D44.indd 25

The use of gold and silver leaves stems from the influence of art in the Renaissance era. It was especially used in the creation of murals in churches. I was also greatly influenced by the amazing works of Gustav Klimt, and that influence shows in my own work. I started experimenting with gold and silver leaves and I really liked the outcome.

Do you always draw inspiration for your art from your own history and background? I am always inspired by the human face and figure. I find it fascinating. I try to incorporate the human figure a lot in my own work. I find that facial expressions are also a great source of inspiration for me, which is why I try to capture those moments of poignant feelings when I’m

work they desired. The fact that it was in Nablus, Palestine added even more layers to the emotional depth of that experience for me.

You once painted icons for the walls and domes of Saint Maria Cathedral in Nablus. Can you tell us a bit about that experience?

Who were the biggest influences on your style?

It was a very special occasion to me. That experience took me back in time and made me feel like I was in the era that I draw my inspiration from: The Renaissance and the works of the Italian masters like Michelangelo and Rafael. That was the first time I ever drew a mural. I felt extremely appreciated as well because I was approached to make the murals by the church itself. It meant that they trusted in my ability to deliver the kind of

Even though I find my inspiration in the human face and figure, I have to say that the direct influence on my style as an artist comes mostly from Gustav Klimt and The Renaissance era. They left a very noticeable impression and I believe that it shows in my art.

What has been your proudest achievement to date as an artist? I am immensely proud of myself for having participated in a number of exhibitions in different

countries around the world. As an artist, the positive feedback you receive is what motivates you to keep going. I am very proud of all the positive reactions that people have had for my work.

What would you say is the biggest challenge facing artists in the Arab world today? Unfortunately, it has to be said that painting as an artistic outlet is not particularly appreciated in the Arab World. We are not a visual culture when it comes to art. However, there is improvement for us artists and the culture now is finally appreciating what it means to own a work of art or even how to make one. The future looks bright for young artists.

How would you encourage the young generation of today to become professional artists? I would encourage them to take up lessons in art schools and to continue practicing every day so they can hone their craft and unlock their true potential as artists. wfinangallery.com/wfinan-artists/marwa-najjar

With their color of burning embers, rubies have long fascinated civilizations the world over. The gems have fueled Van Cleef & Arpels’ imagination ever since 1906, inspiring some of its most emblematic creations. Today, the Maison pays tribute to them with the High Jewelry collection Treasure of rubies. Made up of 60 unique pieces, this corpus of creations showcases the beauty and majesty of this extremely rare stone. Much sought-after, rubies of exceptional quality are often even rarer than diamonds. Like a passionate and demanding collector, Van Cleef & Arpels has brought together more than 3,000 carats of certified rubies over the space of several years. The quest for exceptional gems

has inspired the Maison ever since its foundation, notably with the Arpels brothers’ numerous voyages to India and the Far East from the 1950s to the 1970s. It here takes the form of a treasure trove of precious stones, in creations that reveal all their nuances and fires: from a flower with vermilion petals to a scarlet ribbon or a purple paisley motif, they reflect Van Cleef & Arpels’ inspirations in a palette of glowing red. Rubies – which Indians call “the king of gems” – do not reveal all their secrets at first sight. It takes time to discover and explore them, and penetrate their hidden depths. Treasure of rubies is an invitation to immerse the gaze in this precious material, a journey to the heart of color.

Selected individually, the collection’s rubies display their magic in pieces specifically conceived by Van Cleef & Arpels’ designers to magnify their fires and show off their intense hues. The gems endow the compositions with unique personality, bringing all the subtleties of the original gouache designs to life. Trendy and Traditional Baume & Mercier Brand Director Middle East, Africa and the Indian Sub-Continent, Edouard Achkan reveals how the historical brand maintains its close connection with its evolving clientele.

You recently presented the Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar at SIHH 2019. Can you tell us a bit about it?

01

036-039 Edouard Achkan D44.indd 37

Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar is Baume & Mercier’s perfect expression of the House’s expertise. It will win over aficionados of grand complications. The Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar combines the Baume & Mercier spirit of innovation with its more than 188 years of watchmaking expertise. We chose to combine the Baumatic BM13-1975AC-1 movement with a perpetual calendar module to bring its latest creation to life. The Baumatic self-winding movement offers optimal reliability. In addition to a five-day power reserve, it resists the main magnetic fields of daily life. This model only requires maintenance service once every seven years rather than three to five years, which is recommended for a traditional watch. It indicates the date, the day of the week, the month and the phases of the moon while automatically taking into account the variable lengths of months and the leap year cycle. It’s one of the most complex watches.

In such a competitive watch market, how does Baume & Mercier stand out? Our Maison stands out with its originality, offering a wide collection of affordable luxury watches, from sport to casual to classical. The evolution of the needs of our clients wanting to have more variety in their watches collection is at Baume’s advantage. In addition, there are more and more potential clients who are getting interested in watchmaking. Our Maison is the perfect introduction for these types of customers to access the world of luxury watches.

What are the latest trends of the luxury watch market in the Middle East? The trend this year is to play a lot with the case material. We have seen some new innovations across brands, but one common one is the Bronze trend. The advantage of using bronze lies in the fact that it is a living, changing, and non-magnetic material, thus ensuring better

As it oxidizes, the bronze case will become darker in colour, turning into a deeper shade of brown, and may in time develop a greenish sheen. All these chromatic nuances are due to exposure to air, water or sunlight. After all, a watch is a very personal object that we keep throughout the years and eventually gift it to our children, so what could be better than having and wearing a watch that will be a unique one? This year, Baume & Mercier launched The Clifton Club Bronze, which symbolizes the watchmaking versatility that the men of today are looking for.

and that won’t change. People still appreciate, collect, and gift watches. They even give them to their children. The history, heritage, and affiliation to the timepiece along with the customers’ experience are key in our industry. We are constantly trying to find new ways to tackle our customers’ needs, and to offer them their timepieces through different channels. Finally, we ensure our retail experience to be state of the art through ongoing use of new assets. At the end, it all comes down to people, as they are the ones making the watch and the service. They truly are the key element!

What do you believe are the most important elements of a luxury watch?

being considered a massive collector, but I tend to have different designs and brands from very classical watches, including sporty and casual. I change the watch I wear almost every day, and this varies according to the outfit I’m wearing. I have a watch for every occasion, whether it be a personal or special event, a business trip, a holiday, or a meeting. I don’t wear jewelry, so my watch is a way to express my personality and moreover my mood of the day. I love watches where we can see the caliber on the back case, it is something that only the owner of the watch can see and only he knows the inner beauty of his watch. I could stay contemplating it for hours! It is so fascinating to imagine the time and effort spent by a watchmaker to produce such timepieces.

Do you have a favorite timepiece from Baume & Mercier?

Who in the history of watchmaking do you admire the most? I admire Kurt Klaus, a legendary and yet contemporary watchmaker who is a spiritual father and inventor of some beautiful timepieces.

What’s the next exciting project from Baume & Mercier? There are many clients who are requesting the Maison to re-edit some of the iconic timepieces that had set our Maison apart in the watchmaking industry. Maybe this will happen sooner than expected! baume-et-mercier.com

The Navigator Exploring the rich marine history and recordbreaking timepieces of Ulysse-Nardin with Middle East and India General Manager, Teresa Garin Ruiz De Mendarozqueta.

You recently announced the launch of two new military-inspired watches to the Marine Torpilleur collection. Can You tell us a bit about that collection? There are two new models. Both limited to 300 pieces, with the limited-edition number featured on the dial. The name ‘Torpilleur’ is French for ‘torpedo’, paying homage to the Classic Marine Chronometers that the brand became famous for creating. The watches are water resistance to 50m.The watch is made from steel and its in-house movements are the best performing movement in the range. The second one is also a limited edition with same case in bronze and blue dial. Bronze is in vogue now as it’s used by many watch brands. It has a unique quality in that it changes with time because it oxidizes. This makes the watch very personal to its wearer.

Can you tell us some of the unique features about the Marine Mega Yacht watch? This is an amazing watch. It’s very complicated and limited to only 30 pieces worldwide. Its movement has been developed in collaboration with another independent watchmaker called Christophe Claret, who also comes from the same village in Switzerland and specializes in outrageous and innovative movements. The watch features an

040-041 UCP Ulysis Nardin D44.indd 40

engraved 3D representation of the moon and has a flying tourbillon. It has a power reserve of 80 hours, and it has a part that can be personalized, for example with your name. We sold the first prototype of the Marine Mega Yacht at SIHH. 15 pieces have already sold when we officially launched it in the Miami Boat Show in February. It generated a lot of buzz. We later sold 5 more pieces, so we have sold 20 of the 30 pieces already.

What sets the Ulysse-Nardin brand apart from other brands in the watch industry? Ulysse-Nardin has always had a special connection with the sea. It’s a brand that was born in 1846, so it has nearly two hundred years of history. It became famous because of the ability to build the most accurate marine chronometers. This led to the brand becoming the official supplier of the US Navy in the 19th century. In 1905, when Franklin D. Roosevelt became US President, he opened the doors for international products. At the time, marine chronometers were an essential instrument for navigators because they needed to find their position in the sea, and everything was transported by ship. Compasses were used to indicate north and south, but for east and west, you needed a marine chronometer. Ulysse-Nardin was always the brand that made the most accurate marine chronometers.

01

This is why it became the official supplier to the US Navy and later became the official supplier to 50 different navies in the world.

What are some of the international names that Ulysse-Nardin has sponsored or partnered with recently? We are the official sponsor of Miami Boat Show, the Monaco Boat Show, and Cannes Film Festival, where celebrities as often seen wearing our watches. We also have several friends of the brand that are famous divers such as Fred Buyle, who is well-known for diving without any equipment. And another fan of the brand is Mohammed Salah, who was spotted wearing several timepieces from our Freak collection.

What has been Ulysse-Nardin’s bestselling watch so far? The best-selling watch of the last 3 years is the Marine Torpilleur, which is a replica of original marine chronometers that Ulysse-Nardin used to make in the 19th century. Our second best-seller is the same model but in blue. This year, in addition to introducing new models in the Freak and Executive collections, we also have a completely new diving collection. We usually introduce new collections every year, but for the past year and a half, we have had a new CEO, Patrick Pruniaux, who is extremely talented. He was part of the team that made the Apple watch, and before that,

17/06/2019 13:21

01 Ulysse-Nardin Marine Torpilleur 02 Teresa Garin Ruiz De Mendarozqueta

he had 15-years’ experience in the traditional watch industry. These new additions are his babies.

What do you look for in a watch? What makes a watch special to you? For me, two things are important in a watch: it has to be beautiful on the inside and on the outside. I always look for inner beauty, which in a watch means the movement. I really value the craftsmanship behind the manufacture’s movement.

What would you say are the biggest challenges facing the watch industry in this region these days? The competition is extremely strong. The Middle East is a region of followers. For smaller brands or brands that are less known, it’s very difficult to get noticed by people that are influencers in this region. So, the question would be: how do I get famous or influential people to wear my brand? This makes it challenging to a lot of names in the watch industry.

Are there any upcoming collections or projects you can share with us? This year, we have had a completely new diving collection, the Mega Yacht, and new additions to the Freak and Executive collections. Next year, we will release a very exciting collection for ladies. 02

The Astronauts’ Watch OMEGA celebrates 50 years since the first moon landing with a Limited Edition Speedmaster Apollo 11.

02

042-045 Omega D44.indd 43

It is now 50 years since mankind took its first daring steps onto the moon – a moment that changed history (and the limits of possibility) forever. On this golden anniversary, OMEGA is celebrating the occasion with a brand new Speedmaster that has a very special connection to the astronauts and the legacy of that Apollo 11 mission. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the lunar surface on the 21st of July 1969. Their moonwalk lasted just two and a half hours, but their achievements left a defining footprint on the history of space exploration. It was during this iconic moment that the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional became the first watch worn on the moon. The Apollo 11 mission is certainly the most celebrated moment in OMEGA’s considerable space heritage. But the journey to reach that point began more than 10 years earlier, in 1957, when the very first OMEGA Speedmaster was launched.

Marking the golden anniversary of the first moon landing, OMEGA has produced a new Limited Edition Speedmaster of 1,014 pieces, delivered with a fiveyear warranty. The design follows the famous Speedmaster BA145.022 that OMEGA launched in 1969 to celebrate the success of Apollo 11. Inspired by that model, this new chronograph has been crafted from an exclusive new 18K gold alloy and is powered by a brand new manual winding Master Chronometer calibre 3861. The case, bracelet, dial, hour-markers and hour-minute hands have all been created in 18K Moonshine™ gold - a unique new alloy whose colour is inspired by the shining moonlight in a dark blue sky. In a paler hue than traditional 18K yellow gold, Moonshine™ gold offers high resistance to the fading of colour and lustre over time. On the caseback, a domed lunar meteorite inlay representing the Moon has been delicately set into

the cavity of the ring. There is also an innovative representation of the Earth. Interestingly, the Earth and the Moon have been produced in true proportion (3.67 : 1 in diameter). Inspired by the original packaging of the BA145.022 model in 1969, OMEGA has created a new crater box that will house each Limited Edition timepiece. The panels of the box are in grey ceramic with 3D printing of the lunar surface. Since every panel is structured differently, no crater box will be alike. Furthermore, the top panel of every box is printed with the image of the Sea of Tranquillity and the landing position of Apollo 11.

Technical Perfection Decorated with a flamboyant red guilloché dial, Virtuoso V houses a jumping hour movement paired with retrograde minutes and a reversed hand-fitting. The Maison’s artisan watchmakers and dial-makers have joined forces to give it a new face.

01

01 Reverse side of the all-new Virtuoso V, convertible timepiece thanks to the patented Amadeo system 02 Front face of the Virtuoso V, showcased as a pocket watch

046-047 Bovet Watches D44.indd 46

The dial occupies the entire surface of the movement, giving the piece a new identity. While the watchmakers worked on displaying all the information on the same level, the dial-makers designed a completely original guilloché motif for the dial. The original stepped arrangement has given way to greater classicism, which enhances the artistic crafts and exemplary finishes of all the components. The dial-makers drew on their considerable talent to create this new face. After decorating the metal base with a guilloché motif, they applied a dozen layers of translucent red lacquer. This created depth and enchanting reflections that give the timepiece its magic. In addition to the concentrated technical skill and artistry emanating from the timepiece, its design has become purer and its readability even greater. In terms of technology, the Virtuoso V integrates two complications that are difficult to combine: jumping hours and retrograde minutes. The jump of the hour disk must be perfectly synchronized with the jump of the minute hand. This timepiece

belongs to the Fleurier Complications Collection and is fitted with the patented Amadeo convertible case, allowing it to be transformed into a reversible wristwatch, a table clock, or a pocket watch, without the need for a single tool. As a result, hours and minutes can be found on both sides of the movement. A power reserve indicator completes the indications by displaying a remarkable autonomy of five days, ensured by the use of a single barrel. Finally, to add to the timepiece’s functions, the watchmakers developed a corrector independent of the hour disk that can display a different time zone on each side of the timepiece. With this latest interpretation of an already renowned timepiece, the owner of the Maison BOVET, Mr. Raffy, and his artisans have revealed references that will delight collectors attentive to technical skill and appreciative of the noblest expression of the decorative arts. bovet.com

Luxury Statements The best and latest from the world of watchmaking for the man of today.

Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph Berluti Since 2016, the partnership between these Hublot and Berluti has been one of perfect harmony, marked by their technical prowess and a creativity that knows no bounds. For this fourth opus, Berluti and Hublot have taken the Art of Fusion even further: the case features both the “Scritto” text and the patinated leather palette – iconic signatures of the luxury shoe brand. This model is available in titanium or bronze, paired with a Venezia Cold Brown or Cold Gold leather strap. Olga Berluti expertly developed this carefully studied process of applying essential oils and pigments which give the shoes their unique character, in order to defy time and the rules of colour. The “Scritto” – also one of the hallmarks of the luxury shoe brand – refers to an eighteenth-century French letter which Olga Berluti bought at auction. Handwritten lines of text make their mark in this iconic collection, the expression of

048-051 Men Watches D44.indd 48

a labour of love crafted by hand. Encapsulating the Venezia leather – a natural material – in a waterresistant case was a feat in itself. Having done so, the next challenge for Hublot was clear: to find a way to transpose these traditions to the metal – a material with entirely different physical attributes – and imbue the cases with the “soul” of Berluti. A way of revealing the bond of expertise which unites these luxury ateliers. These two elegant hybrid timepieces are powered by the HUB1143 automatic chronograph movement and, from the strap to the dial, they showcase an infinite array of autumnal colours in all their contrasting shades. These timepieces are presented in a bespoke box containing a complete Berluti leather care set. Each version will be available in a limited edition of 200 pieces. hublot.com

Bovet Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter One Unveiled at SIHH 2019, the Récital 26 Brainstorm® Chapter One presents a host of innovations and gives a glimpse of the scope of the unprecedented possibilities for interpreting timekeeping offered by the “writing slope” case. For this first Brainstorm® chapter, BOVET 1822 Owner, Mr. Raffy wanted a sapphire model. Chosen for its crystalline transparency, sapphire is also the second hardest material known after diamond. The lightness of sapphire is also unsurpassed, and in fact weighs less than titanium. This novel choice represented a major challenge for Maison BOVET’s technicians. While sapphire cases have been in use for almost forty years, their designs have, up to present, remained relatively simple, due to the machining and polishing constraints posed by this extremely hard material. The asymmetric profile of the middle, bezel, and glass of the “writing slope” case confronted engineers and technicians with hitherto unresolved difficulties. As is now customary at BOVET, the Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter One is presented as a limited edition, restricted to the number of movements produced. Only sixty movements will leave the manufacture’s workshops, ensuring a level of exclusivity that reflects the excellence of this timepiece. bovet.com

A. Lange & Söhne Concorso d‘Eleganza From 24 to 26 May 2019, A. Lange & Söhne once again sponsored the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, which has taken place at the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este in Como, Italy since 1929. For the eighth time, a oneoff LANGE 1 TIME ZONE was awarded to the winner of the “Best of Show” competition. In its 90th year, “The Symphony of Engines” is the anniversary’s motto of the Concorso d’Eleganza, the most exclusive beauty pageant for historic automobiles. While the 6, 8 and 12-cylinder engines were creating the powerful sound in the park of Villa d’Este, the gentle ticking of the customized LANGE 1 TIME ZONE “Como Edition” paid tribute to the incredible beauty of the location and the exclusivity of the event. Since 2012, the “Como Edition” is the horological equivalent to the competition’s “Best of Show” car, handed over by A. Lange & Söhne CEO Wilhelm Schmid to the winner. There is an undeniable synergy between vintage cars and watches: the pursuit for engineering supremacy, craftsmanship, and the relentless design process to catch perfection behind the artistic product. However, there is one similarity between A. Lange & Söhne and the Concorso d’Eleganza: Both are small institutions in their respective branches, nevertheless, they do not accept anything but the best to create something long-term with substance. This forms the reasonable basis of the partnership between the two. alange-soehne.com

Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Zagato 100th Anniversary Edition Chopard could not let this year 2019 pass without taking up the challenge of honouring Zagato’s 100th anniversary with a timepiece destined to be memorable in every way. The main options quickly emerged. This 100th Anniversary Edition would obviously be a Mille Miglia watch, belonging to the Classic Chronograph collection initiated in 2017 and bearing the codes of a racing model, in the spirit of this classic car rally cherished by both Maisons. This 42 mm steel-clad piece exudes a deliberately vintage spirit, with curves inspired by irresistible oldtimers. The mechanics are impeccable, with reliability and precision guaranteed by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). Based on this chronograph calibre built for performance, Chopard and Zagato designed a sleek watch ideally suited to endurance road racing enthusiasts. Particular attention was paid to the details composing the style of the piece, starting with a dial with a motif resembling the Z for Zagato in a magnificent lacquered red, a favourite hue of both the Milan-based designer and the Mille Miglia. As a reminder of the authorship of this watch, logos of the two Maisons appear at 12 o’clock, surrounded by baton-type hour-markers painted with SuperLumiNova® -– as are the hands – so as to ensure perfect readability in all circumstances. The sporty nature of the chronograph is further enhanced by the black aluminium inner bezel bearing a graduated tachymeter scale. chopard.com

Corum Lab 01 The latest Lab 01 models retain their distinctive barrel-shaped cases like their predecessors, but Corum has chosen to produce the cases for these new timepieces in Damascus steel- a first for the brand. Instantly recognizable by its wavy pattern, Damascus steel is a type of alloy well known to knife and sword makers. The history of ancient Damascus steel dates back to as early as the 4th century A.D., where the ancient city of Damascus was then well known for its weapon-makers and metallurgical prowess. Weapons made with this historical alloy were used by some of the most well known warriors in the past, including the Crusaders. Damascus steel is known for its exceptional hardness and resistance to shatter. Blades made from this material are sharper, stronger and more flexible than others. In ancient times, one was said to be able to slice through a strand of hair with a Damascus steel-sword in mid-air, and still have it remain extraordinarily sharp throughout the next few battles. However, the ancient art of producing this legendary alloy was a secret closely guarded by its makers, has been shrouded in mystery over the years. It is said that to date, no one has actually succeeded in uncovering the actual know-how behind ancient Damascus steel. corum-watches.com

Feminine Charm The latest iconic and feminine timepieces for the elegant, refined woman of today.

Audemars Piguet Haute Joaillerie Sapphire Orbe A secret timepiece easily transformed from a bracelet to a watch, Sapphire Orbe is a unique creation that pushes gem-setting craftsmanship to new heights and underlines the Manufacture’s creativity and savoir-faire. Inspired by the wintery and rugged landscape of the Vallée de Joux in the Swiss Jura Mountains, this trilogy combines traditional gemsetting techniques with unconventional design for a distinctive effect of elegance, strength and power. Named after the river that crosses Le Brassus, home of Audemars Piguet in the Vallée de Joux, Sapphire Orbe follows suit with ties to nature. The timepiece embodies a glittering river of diamonds and sapphires in graded hues of blue and orange, as night merges into day. Sapphire Orbe features more than 12,000 stones, each rigorously selected, individually cut and set by hand. The central petal-shaped rings are entirely snow-set with diamonds and sapphires in 6 graded shades of blue and orange, each in 20 different diameters ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm in size. Multifaceted, this piece offers a play of colour and light that changes depending on the perspective from which it is seen. It took Audemars Piguet’s artisans approximately 1,050 hours to gemset this piece. In the domed centre nestles the 2 cm dark blue sapphire-set globe which, when inverted, reveals the watch’s 18-carat white gold dial paved with graded orange sapphires. This spherical case houses a tiny quartz calibre. The bracelet is made of articulated diamond-set components, for maximum flexibility and comfort. audemarspiguet.com

Chopard Happy Love Much more than a watch, with Happy Sport, Caroline Scheufele invented a whole a new way of envisioning time. We no longer look at our wrists to tell the time, but to appreciate the luxury of observing gracefully whirling diamonds revelling in their freedom expressed through an ever-changing choreography. Like an enchanted interlude, Happy Sport watches embellish a moment spent far from the daily hustle and bustle of the world and its constraint, offering complete freedom to enjoy a truly original sight. With Happy Love, the seven dancing diamonds are invited to continue their joyful waltz on a blue mother-of-pearl dial conveying a universal message emitting eminently positive vibes: LOVE. The four letters are joyfully colourful and stylised in streetart mode, adding a vivid touch to this resolutely contemporary watch that has perpetually reinvented itself throughout its more than a quarter of a century of existence. An additional detail, the letter O has been carefully crafted in the shape of a heart: a direct reference to the emblematic symbol of Chopard, the BigHearted Maison. The 36 mm-diameter Happy Love case is entirely made of steel and fitted with a royal blue glossy leather strap matching the dial colours. It contains a self-winding mechanical movement guaranteeing an approximately 42-hour power reserve. Exclusively available from Chopard boutiques, the Happy Love watch is issued in limited editions of 250 with a polished bezel, and 150 with a diamond-set bezel. chopard.com

Bovet Virtuoso V Decorated with a flamboyant red guilloché dial Virtuoso V houses a jumping hour movement paired with retrograde minutes and a reversed hand-fitting. The Maison’s artisan watchmakers and dialmakers have joined forces to give it a new face. After decorating the metal base with a guilloché motif, they applied a dozen layers of translucent red lacquer, before finally polishing it to give a perfectly flat surface. This created depth and enchanting reflections that give the timepiece its magic. In addition to the concentrated technical skill and artistry emanating from the timepiece, its design has become purer and its readability even greater. bovet.com

Faberge Lady Libertine I May’s birthstone, the emerald, is said to symbolise new beginnings, loyalty, hope, peace and security. Marking the occasion is Fabergé’s Lady Libertine I timepiece – pictured here with Gemfields’ Inkalamu, the 5,655-carat Lion Emerald. Lady Libertine I was first imagined when Fabergé and JeanMarc Wiederrecht, founder of Geneva-based award-winning watch movement creator Agenhor, visited Gemfields’ emerald mine, Kagem, in Zambia. The cohort were enchanted as they watched natural emeralds touch human hands for the first time in 500 million years. Witnessing the vast, natural splendour of the Zambian landscape from above gave Fabergé and Agenhor an idea: to reproduce that image with rough emeralds, using the gemstones as they are created by nature. The result is framed in an 18 karat rose gold case with 1.84 carats of brilliant cut diamonds adorning the bezel. This unique portrayal is only possible in a watch face as a result of Fabergé’s exclusive Dalliance movement 6911, which allows the hands to travel around the outside of the watch face, leaving a space for the gems on the dial and central dome to reproduce the timeless splendour of the Zambia landscape. faberge.com

Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Metropolitaine Rose Gold Set White Mother-Of-Pearl Parmigiani Fleurier presents a new Tonda Métropolitaine version with a feminine timepiece that marries a white mother-of-pearl dial with a diamond-set bezel. The Tonda Métropolitaine Rose Gold Set White Mother-of-Pearl combines the iridescent reflections of organic material with the brilliance of mineral material. The Métropolitaine Rose Gold Set White Mother-of-Pearl dial is made from white mother-of-pearl. This natural product provides each timepiece with a unique finish. Moreover, this unique and vibrant finish provided by the mother-of-pearl perfectly complements the dance of the hands in this Haute Horlogerie timepiece. The skeletonised hands emphasise the iridescent brilliance of the dial. They appear in the date window at 6 o’clock. In the same spirit, the rose gold appliques are discreet and highlight the organic material in all its complexity. The singularity of the slender case middle, with its asymmetrical profiles, appeals to modernity and dynamism. The bezel, set with 76 diamonds totalling 0.52 carats, imparts a clear brilliance to the dial, contrasting with the 18-carat rose gold colour scheme chosen for this timepiece. With an urban character, this timepiece has been designed to celebrate the daily life of women just as much as the special moments in their lives. parmigiani.com

A captivating women’s watch, “La Dentelle” attests to this blend of tradition and modernity, not only with its original movement but, most importantly, with its inventive bracelet. Wide, feminine, lacy and adorned with jewellery, the bracelet evokes innovation and elegance. This new Robert & Fils 1630 timepiece will clearly attract women who appreciate beauty and for whom the delicateness inspired by the lace is as important as the quality and originality of the historic movement. robertfils1630.com

Richard Mille New Carbon TPT Bracelet Considered to be a fundamental element by Richard Mille, a watch strap or bracelet deserves undivided attention. Each one stands out for its aesthetics, which harmoniously continue the lines of the case, while providing resistance and comfort in all circumstances. Exclusively premiered on the RM 07-01 Ladies’ in Carbon TPT®, the new bracelet – made from this same material – encapsulates this ambition. Richard Mille has always aimed to expand its wide collection of straps and bracelets to give all those who wear its creations multiple options for personalising their timepieces. This has already led the development studio to design a number of variations, including the creation of two gold bracelets, a metal curb chain and an open link, which can be enhanced with precious stones. Currently only available to female customers, the Carbon TPT® bracelet is the fruit of 13 months of development, and resolutely asserts its elegant and sporty style. Entirely dressed in Carbon TPT® and titanium from the bezel to the folding clasp, the RM 07-01 Ladies’ combines the architectural complexity of a 200-part metal bracelet with the elegance of a technical material. The bracelet is formed of dozens of Carbon TPT® plates placed on a grade 5 titanium skeleton by means of 44 of Richard Mille’s characteristic spline screws. This micromechanical gem combines suppleness and extreme rigidity to astounding effect, while extending the tonneau shape all around the wrist. The combination of these materials gives a total bracelet weight of just 29 grams. richardmille.com

Tradition and Innovation Since the very start. nearly 200 years ago, Herend has always been characterised by permanent renewal. This is how Herend has emerged as the world’s largest porcelain manufactory - not a factory, but a manufactory.

01

056-059 Porcelain D44.indd 56

Producing unique porcelain pieces by hand, Herend has a commitment to art, perfection, tradition, and innovation. These are the principles that inspire their ever growing product selection and guide them in their permanent quest for perfection. More than just objects for use, Herend’s porcelain creations are works of art, composed of the four elements, water, fire, air and earth, thus comprising the entire world. Herend’s artists strive to create value and their skills are passed on from generation to generation. To secure the professional craftsmanship for the future, the manufactory has its own training school where the theoritical teaching and practical training of different porcelain-making crafts are taught. Product development projects take significant part in Herend’s life.

New products are being created almost every day. Each and every piece has to go through a strict quality control process. The product range contains more than 4000 different decors and nearly 16,000 shapes. Among the porcelain painters, fifteen masterpainters work in the manufactory. The adequate qualifications for being a master are obtainable mainly at the manufactory’s vocational school, but also years of professional practice is required to be a master trainee. A master must be a specialist with training in visual art, and has to be capable of carrying out aesthetic and professional tasks to a high standard in different areas of porcelain-making. Craftsmanship and skills, the traditions of making manufactory porcelain, the blending of kaolin, feldspar and quartz in the base material, the secret recipes of porcelain pigments, the commitment to create outstanding quality, uniqueness, the beauty

embodied in the Herend brand, elegance and luxury, the artists’ love of and respect for porcelain - these are the values that Herend has inherited over the centuries since the foundation of the Herend Porcelain Manufactory in the 19th century. These are the values that connect Herend’s past and future. The Herend Porcelain Manufactory is a valuecreating community, whose mission is to preserve and pass on its centuries-old values, where beauty, uniqueness and high quality are part of everyday life and where the community advances along a clearly marked path: maintaining the manufacture’s values, respecting its traditions, always producing handcrafted porcelain, working in permanent renewal, and continuously bringing surprise to customers by being ahead of others in creating style. herend.com

Celebrity Touch

Durrah speaks with entrepreneur and host of Joelle Show, Joelle Mardinian about beauty, inspiration, and the recent launch of Maison de Joelle in Bahrain.

What can customers expect from Maison de Joelle in Bahrain? Maison De Joelle has consistently provided high end services to its customers. We are known for that luxe vibe and celebrity treatment to all our customers using only the best of the products, which I am proud to use myself. Everything we offer in our UAE brand, KSA branch, and all other branches is what we are offering in Bahrain. We ensure maintaining the quality and range of services, so our expanding chain has the same value for our customers around the globe.

What are the brands you work with at Maison de Joelle?

060-061 UCP Joelle D44.indd 60

Maison De Joelle was founded after customers, fans and viewers asked me when I was going to open my own salon. I launched the first branch in Jumeirah, Dubai back in 2008 and I am so happy that people have recognized its quality. We ensure using only the best of hair, skin and beauty services with the latest innovations and techniques. My team makes sure that the best cosmetics are used with special care for all women that visit us again and again. At Maison de Joelle, we make sure all our dedicated services are offered through a specialized team of professionals, taking care of the latest trends around to completely satisfy everyone.

01 Maison de Joelle founder, Joelle Mardinian

Are there plans to open more branches of Maison de Joelle?

I personally make sure that we work with only the top brands. I am so proud of using my own skincare and hair care brand, Joelle Paris, at all branches of Maison De Joelle. I cannot be happier to see products that I created out of love and care being used at all branches. We also use other great brands like BEAUTYFull hair extensions, which I use many times for my video shoots and pictures.

Hopefully. We are so delighted to have 9 branches so far. With all the love and requests we received, we do our best to expand as much as we can. My only goal is to keep the quality high and maintain it throughout all our branches.

What makes Maison de Joelle unique from other beauty salons in the region?

My mom has been the biggest inspiration for me all my life. From raising us to doing little things for herself, I was always awed at how

You inspire a lot of women, but which women are an inspiration to you?

she manages herself, and I realised that it was something I wanted to do in my life as well. I am also inspired by many people around me, but there are many women, in particular, who inspire me. The one that pops into my head is Oprah Winfrey. My goodness, that woman is a fast-moving train! she’s unstoppable. When I look at people like her, I know she is not doing that for money. She’s richer than the Queen of England and that was years and years ago, before she even had her own food line and her own magazine. I know she does all of that for passion, success, and satisfaction, and to also be a role model for other African-Americans or African girls.

people’s perception on how to look at Arabs. We are leaders. We are inventors. We are educated. We are modern, but at the same time, we hold on to culture. We believe in our missions to grow and to prove ourselves. So for me, Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Mohammed, Mohammad Al Abbar, Queen Rania of Jordan, and Princess Haya are my true icons. In the fashion industry, there is of course Ellie Saab and Zuhair Murad, who both have taken their Arabic roots with them to the world while they dressed international stars. Anyone who has actually made a mark in our world, these are the people that I look up to.

Who would you say are your icons?

What’s the most challenging part of being a celebrity?

Of course, for us as Arabs, it has to be our great leaders. And especially for me, since I have lived in the UAE for almost more than 12 years. Undoubtedly, Sheikh Mohammed is really at the top of the list of my idols. How could anyone top what he has done? And of course, Sheikh Zayed before him. I mean these are extremely powerful, intelligent, forward-thinking, and honest leaders. They have done nothing but good for their country and the countries around them. Dubai today, and the UAE as a whole, makes us as Arabs lift our heads up high in the world. We are changing other

Career-wise, the most challenging aspect has been perhaps the awareness. Making sure that people truly understand your vision and the value you have within to provide. And then also making sure that the quality that I intended for my work or business is kept intact. I also would say finding the right kind of people to work close to you is important. They need to believe in your vision and your goals, and have the same kind of positivity. Because I have 10 million followers on Instagram alone and many viewers worldwide, there is a certain responsibility that comes with being an

060-061 UCP Joelle D44.indd 61

influencer. People look up to you. On a personal level, a challenge that I face is having to travel. I love travelling and I love my work, but I am also a mom, and a family loving person. My kids are everything to me and as much as I do all for them, sometimes I just miss them so much while working away from home.

What advice would you give young female entrepreneurs? If you want to be an entrepreneur, make sure that you are willing to sleep less. To think more. To give up your brunches, breakfasts, and lunches or going browsing in the malls whenever you feel like because your work is going to take a lot of your time. Be willing to invest money and know that that investment might not come back to you for at least 2 or 3 years. That’s what you need to put in mind. You have to work hard, be on top of your business, get into the smallest things and the biggest things, hire the right team around you, and be a good leader to your team. You cannot ask your team to work hard while you are sitting down doing nothing. They will not be motivated. I think a great leader is someone that leads the way with honesty. That’s why they are called leaders. joelle.com

Sacred Love The 2019 EsposaCouture bridal collection celebrates the purest forms of love.

Once again, Kristie Romanos nods to romance when designing her 2019 EsposaCouture bridal collection. Inspired by the lotus flower, she creates pieces that blossom magnificently and depict in every movement and detail everything the sacred flower represents. In this year’s collection, floral and leaf patterns are very much in play, intricately adding the designer’s signature on dresses that celebrate beauty and purity. Deeply influenced by the lotus shape, the dresses float effortlessly through cascading layers of fabrics, exuding a feeling of lightness at all times. Behind their mystical feel, the 2019 wedding dresses reveal intricate embroidery combined with rich lace and layered details. Authentic Charm The new Brunello Cucinelli Spring-Summer 2019 collections for men and women combine contemporary tends with timeless elegance.

In the Men’s SS 2019 collection, the brand’s distinctive spirit finds its rich, natural expression in the calibrated combination of traditional elegance and dynamism, which are the typical characteristics of an evolving, lively and refined period of time, able to embrace new ideas. The key element of the new collection is found in its ability to effortlessly combine elegance and a casual feeling, in order to create a look with a contemporary appeal. The sartorial contours of the suits make perfect use of unique fabrics and are always blended with sports details, which convey new energy to men’s style: shirts with colorful patterns, detailed t-shirts, and super-lightweight sweatshirts. In solid colors or with traditional patterns, jackets play a fundamental role in creating balance, always combined with sports details, like the contrasting topstitch on garment-dyed trousers, and the slightly distressed details or stone-washed effects for denim.

074-077 Brunello D44.indd 74

The fundamental nuances of the lightweight summer fabrics explore the warm tones of the colonial world: panama, sand, caramel, cubano and tobacco all form a rich, comfortable background that easily provides harmony among the collection’s various inspirations. The glowing hues of fruits and aromatic herbs such as lavender, basil, raspberry and radicchio join the rich palette of neutrals: light beiges, metropolitan greys and noble blues. Influences from the sports world add a special touch to the knitwear collection: patterns borrowed from golf and tennis traditions integrate details and hints of color. Stripes and bands on cuffs, collars, and sleeves create a perfectly balanced style which is both dynamic and refined. In solid colors or with inlays, the surfaces of the knits are enhanced by the combination of different stitches and the contrasting effects created by poplin inserts. Accessories complete the collection and define

the style for every occasion: exquisite leathers and fabrics are skillfully crafted to add the distinctive Brunello Cucinelli touch. The Women’s SS 2019 Collection brings together a primitiveness of the elements, sartorial references, natural colors, desert atmospheres, an active world, modern surfaces, and exquisite craftsmanship in a single harmonious balanced vision. A sophisticated atmosphere of new whites, neutrals, Êcrus, and warm tones of the earth and natural leathers transmits a feeling of wellbeing and harmony, unaffected by time, blurring the lines of defined seasons. The mix of natural colors blend in a symphony of light and dark, cool and warm neutrals, sun-baked tones and pure nuances. Spicy tobacco and beige shades are combined with vivid summery hues: sunny yellows, rusty reds, dark cherry, and ranges of greens

progressing to shades of blue. Linens and hemp, with their irregular, slubby appearance, are the base ingredients for all combinations. The natural color of linen emerges with its inimitable mĂŠlange texture. The organic appearance of materials take on a timeless rhythm, combined in contrast with masculine chevron, check, and Prince of Wales, or with the femininity of sheer fabrics, flowing viscose, and billowing silks. Luxurious velvety nappa leathers alternate with rough suedes, accentuated by their raw-cut edges. Smoothly flowing and crisp leathers recall the appearance of technical, sporty, and waterproof fabrics. Washed garment-dyed poplins contrast with light organzas, weightless Japonette silks, and evanescent veils. Tops, shirts, and dresses feature a blend of ethnic stripes. brunellocucinelli.com

Tailored to Perfection Alfred Dunhill Made to Measure introduces the Mayfair silhouette: a new, contemporary cut for the house tailoring collection.

The Mayfair calls on a shorter jacket length, slim lapel, narrower sleeves and a more tapered trouser; combined with a lightly structured shoulder and modern silhouette that wears slightly closer to the body than other signature Dunhill fits. An extension of the ready-to-wear collections, the Mayfair silhouette joins the Belgravia, deconstructed Fitzrovia and the traditional English cut of the St James. As part of the Made to Measure service,

Art In Time Monaco A new watchmaking gallery concept has now arrived in Monaco, at the initiative of Karl-Friedrich Scheufele. It brings together eight houses, united by their shared values of independence, originality, and craftsmanship – and places passion and innovation at the heart of a new horological experience. ART IN TIME is based on a unique concept in watchmaking: bringing together niche brands on the basis of their common values rather than their types of watch, ranges, or similar styles. In addition to these values, the houses in question all share the same founding inspiration, characterised by independence, creativity, and exclusivity. “The ethos of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud, just like that of Chopard, is rooted in a respect for Fine Watchmaking; as custodians of this heritage, we seek to promote its values,” explains Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud’s CEO Karl-Friedrich Scheufele. “The maisons in ART IN TIME are all motivated by the same deeplyheld convictions, each in their own distinctive fashion.”

092-099 Shops D44.indd 95

Brought together for the first time under the banner of ART IN TIME by their shared passion for craftsmanship, each of these watchmaking houses has its own well-defined identity, under the leadership of genuine entrepreneurs whose contemporary creations are strictly confined to select limited editions. Every year, these rare watches emerge from the workshops of the maisons in question – themselves among the most innovative and outstanding in the world of Fine Watchmaking. Typically, the singular nature of the pieces resides in a renewed approach to the way the time is displayed, the construction of the movement, or a ground-breaking design for the case, setting them apart from more conventional timepieces. And now, these niche brands for discerning collectors have their own address: ART IN TIME. art-in-time.com

de GRISOGONO Paris de GRISOGONO opened a new boutique in Paris, at the heart of the Golden Triangle. Located at 33 George V Avenue, the 65sqm boutique reveals a new interior design concept developed by de GRISOGONO in collaboration with the London-based architects of the David Collins Studio. Expressing the energy, expertise and iconic aesthetic constants of de GRISOGONO jewellery, this new Parisian showcase elegantly combines classic references with contemporary furniture. Vivid Visuals Drawing inspiration from darker moments, Khaled Alnajdi is an artist that captures the emotional twists of the human phenomenon, a trait that shines through in all his works. Durrah speaks to the talented Kuwaiti about his life’s passion and his dreams as an artist.

When did you discover you wanted to be an artist?

02

100-103 Khaled Artist 2 D44.indd 101

I get Inspired from moments of sadness or depression - it reflects my desire to create and I recognized that I enjoy painting ever since I was child. I remember that I used to love staying at home in my favorite corner and spend hours painting while other children my age were outside playing. My hobby kept growing until it became my obsession. As an adult, I find myself painting to escape from the outside world and spreading my energy. Every time I complete a painting, I feel happy and accomplished.

People form the basis of your art. What essence do you try to capture when you paint? With every piece I work on, I imagine the personality of the object or person I am painting. People in my paintings are sad, and their ideas are crooked and contradictory. They’re worried and can’t be happy and content. My work generally reflects my personal artistic perspective of people around me and in different regions of the world; their way of life and their passion.

What was the most challenging portrait you’ve done?

17/06/2019 13:36

I’m most comfortable when painting portraits. It has always come so easily to me. Although, I do have the option and I am able to try other forms of painting and different types of media. Recently, however, I have been pushing myself out of my comfort zone and have been working on a piece that include structures and patterns, a kind of a landscape mixed in with my aesthetic.

What material do you usually work with when creating? I prefer working with charcoal, acrylic, oil, pastel and ink on canvas and paper.

Where do you find inspiration before you start working on a portrait?

03

102

The paintings I paint have features that reflect negative experiences in my life. I was not aware that these negative experiences have a creative effect. In every painting I paint, from my point of view to the chosen frame, they all reveal the identity of the artist.

How do you feel about Kuwait’s art scene? Is the community getting enough support? Recently, creative artists have appeared in various artistic fields. Distinguished artists and critics have helped emerging talents to innovate by hosting exhibitions and showcasing new talent. This support has contributed to push the local Kuwaiti art scene to the world.

One of the first destinations on any Dubai tourist’s list should be The Outlet Village. Located in Jebel Ali, The Outlet Village is a stylish, contemporary indoor retail destination developed by Meraas. Spread across 268,000 square feet of terracotta brick evocative of Tuscany, it features a picturesque retail enclave inspired by San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tuscany, Italy. More than just an upscale outlet mall, TOV is a fashion destination for Dubai and the UAE, as it was devised as part of Meraas’ commitment to the Dubai Fashion 2020 strategy, helping diversify retail infrastructure and positioning Dubai as an evolving fashion capital of the world. The stores are all set at ground level against a backdrop of striking medieval Italian architecture. Home to over 81 retailers, TOV carries over 500 brands, including contemporary and luxury

fashion labels plus sportswear, homeware, furniture and household goods. Noteworthy brands include Fendi, Valentino, Givenchy, Tom Ford, Jimmy Choo, Tory Burch, Dolce & Gabanna and Kenzo. It’s also home to 10 food and beverage options, and is the first outlet concept in the region for brands such as Galeries Lafayette, Bebe, M Missoni, Ermenegildo Zegna, Dunhill and Roberto Cavalli. For a relaxing shopping experience, visitors can head to Mercato mall. Located in Jumeirah, this Italian Renaissance-style mall has cobbled streets, pretty piazzas, and 130 retailers including like Armani Jeans, Diesel and Massimo Dutti. It has a charming ambience, as you will shop while soaking up the natural light from the glass atrium. Locals love the Spinneys supermarket and there’s a Vox Cinema and a Fun City for kids. Another must-go destination for shopping lovers is City Centre Deira. When it first opened its doors in 1995, City Centre Deira virtually redefined the concept of malls in the region. As the first large-scale, mixed-use shopping destination, complete with retail outlets, restaurants, entertainment facilities and a hotel, it created an international dimension for onestop shopping and entertainment for the Middle East, bringing it to an entirely new level. City Centre Deira encompasses over 123,028 square meters of retail space and features over 371 retail stores and services. Its entertainment facilities

include Magic Planet, one of the region’s most popular indoor family entertainment centres; VOX Cinemas, a 20-screen cinema multiplex with 3,000 seats. Other prominent shopping destinations include Mall of Emirates, a multi-level shopping haven with over 630 international brands, and The Dubai Mall, which welcomes more than 80 million visitors each year to its 1,300 shops. To get the most out of your visit, we recommend buying a Dubai Pass. This all-inclusive pre-paid card grants cash-free access to 33 key events and venues across Dubai, making it the perfect way for tourists to explore the city’s world-class destination proposition.

The pass offers ‘Select’ and ‘Unlimited’ packages, with a specially-curated list of popular attractions and experiences. These include Burj Khalifa, Dubai Parks and Resorts, IMG Worlds of Adventure, Wild Wadi Waterpark, Ski Dubai, Desert Safari Tours, and many more. The best time to visit Dubai is in January, with Dubai Shopping Festival usually in full swing. The month-long retail bonanza includes city-wide sales and there are bargains to be had across most of Dubai’s malls and boutiques, as well as millions of dirhams to be won in prizes and cars. For those travelling in the middle of the year, Dubai Summer Surprises offers sales on a much smaller scale and some much-needed respite from the heat. For the rest of the year, there’s always the promise of a new store launch, boutique opening, or development in the works.

Dreaming in Gold 01

Covet House’s passion for design and the charm of extraordinary pieces from Boca do Lobo and Koket unite to produce a whimsical luxury project. 01

Designed for a person with eccentric and iconic personality, the Director of the Royal Circus of Russia, Giya Eradze, trusted the exuberant hands of Tatyana Myronova’s expertise in American Neoclassical style for this project. This Moscow-based interior designer and architect trusted COVET HOUSE to fulfill her golden fantasies. Choosing between the luxurious brands under the Covet House name like BOCA DO LOBO, DELIGHTFULL, BRABBU, KOKET, MAISON VALENTINA, CIRCU, LUXXU, ESSENTIAL HOME, RUG’SOCIETY, FOOGO or PULLCAST wasn’t the easiest of the tasks, but ultimately the luxurious love affair was born between Boca do Lobo and Koket. “Our people, especially those who grew up in the Soviet Union in the same soulless interiors, should be able to express themselves, show their individuality. And we, as professionals, have to hear, understand and make a customer such an interior in which he will be driving, incredibly comfortable and cool” says Tatyana Myronova.

By having in mind the influences of the Circus director, the interior designer had the ultimate luxury experience by providing an exquisite combination of gold tones, textures, shapes and fabrics. Tatyana’s main goal in creating this luxury interior was to have it correspond to the client’s needs. Filled with brilliant golds, animalistic vibes, and rhinestones, Tatyana created a beautiful Royal feast for the eyes. Using layers of gold, the designer’s favorite color, throughout the space. Gold chairs, gold dressers, gold chandeliers, gold mirrors, and golden stucco molding. The Director didn’t hide his fascination for the famous, colorful and intense patterns of the recognized brand, Versace. In the apartment, especially in the dining room, the presence of its designs is noticeable, like the gold animals that Giya loves. Gold is present everywhere in the apartment, in all the details and patterns. Pieces like the astonishing armchair, Imperfectio, by Boca do Lobo are distinguishable as luxury and exclusive, honoring the owner. The armchair enhances a message to the living room, is the expression of imperfect aesthetic, the appeal of that which is authentic art and that is truer to life. The living room’s decoration, specially the armchair, expresses imperfection and, at the same time, confluency between its pieces of furniture. is the expression of imperfect aesthetic, the appeal of that which is authentic art that is truer to life. Imperfectio armchair praises artisanal work as the ultimate form of art that is quite intentionally imperfect. Through its unique existence and shapes,

The Last Shangri-La Located in the eastern Himalayas between India and China, Bhutan’s snow-capped peaks rise above shadowy gorges cloaked in primeval forests, its majestic fortresslike dzongs and monasteries taking prime position in the picture-book beauty of the amazing Himalayan landscape. 01 Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful dzongs 02 The Punakha Dzong is the winter residence of the official monk body, Dratshang

Bhutan is no ordinary place. This last great Himalayan Kingdom shrouds itself in mystery and magic, and boasts being a melting pot where traditional Buddhist culture carefully embraces global developments. Imagine a country where worth and development are measured differently — Gross National Happiness instead of Gross Domestic Product. Beauty and wisdom are visible at each dzong, every gompa, and most incredibly, in the eyes of every smiling Buddhist monk you encounter. This is a country where nature lovers, photographers, and culture enthusiasts alike will uncover a meshed trove of natural beauty, culture, traditions, and unparalleled compassion. Bhutan offers one of the last natural untouched pristine pockets in the entire Himalaya region. By law, at least 60% of the country must

remain forested for all future generations. Bhutan has succeeded in doing so. More than 51% of the country is protected—the largest percentage of any Asian country. Touring Bhutan is no piece of cake as it requires stamina due to its long drives on winding roads and inclined walks before reaching one’s destination. Nonetheless, eager tourists and international media flock to explore this oncelandlocked country. Paro, the capital city, is a small and charming town located at an elevation of about 2280m in the center of the valley, on the bank of Pa Chhu River. Paro town was first formed in 1985 with one main street, lined with colorfully painted shops. It is home to the famous Paro Tshechu, one of the most sought-after dance festivals celebrated over a period of for 5 days to commemorate Guru Rinpoche and his great deeds.

112-115 - Travel - Bhutan D44.indd 114

17/06/2019 13:38

The festival is attended by hundreds of devoted – almost mesmerized – audience. The theatrical presentation is about the afterlife, hence the event is highly revered. the Paro Tshechu is held in the open courtyard with the backdrop of the majestic Paro Dzong. It is a spiritual and a social event where community members traditionally congregate while dressed ostentatiously. Paro is also home to the legendary Tiger Nest, one of Bhutan’s holiest monasteries. Paro Taktsang, or Tiger’s Nest’s legend states that Guru Rinpoche arrived in Bhutan by flying on the back of a tigress. He visited several caves and cliff sides in order to meditate and subdue local demons. He spent a large amount of his time on the mountainside above the Paro Valley, sanctifying the place. The hike to reach the Tiger’s Nest is strenuous, but the view from the top is not to be missed and definitely worth the effort.

Punakha, another famous city in Bhutan, sits in a sultry, fertile and beautiful valley at the junction of the Mo Chhu (Mother River) and Pho Chhu (Father River). The low altitude of the Punakha valley allows for the growth of two rice crops a year, and oranges and bananas are also in abundance. Bird enthusiasts should keep their eyes peeled for the critically endangered white-bellied heron, which can be spotted in Punakha. Commanding the river junction is the gorgeous Punakha Dzong, arguably Bhutan’s most beautiful dzong. Situated where two rivers converge, the Punakha Dzong is the most dramatic and beautiful example of Bhutanese architecture in the country. It is especially beautiful in spring when the lilac-coloured jacaranda trees bring a lush sensuality to the dzong’s characteristically towering whitewashed walls. This dzong was the second to be built in Bhutan and it

served as the capital and seat of government until the mid-1950s. All of Bhutan’s kings have been crowned here. The dzong is still the winter residence of the Dratshang (official monk body). Bhutan holds many surprises. This is a country where the rice is red and where chilies aren’t just for seasoning, but are the main dish. It’s also a deeply Buddhist yet modern land, where monks check their smartphones after performing a divination. Yet, while it visibly protects its Buddhist traditions, Bhutan is not a museum. The Bhutanese are well-educated, fun loving, and well-informed about the world around them. It’s this blend of the ancient and the modern that makes Bhutan the last Shangri-La, and an endlessly fascinating destination. www.instagram.com/monajumaan

Mandarin Oriental Tokyo 08

Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo has completed a comprehensive renovation of its guestrooms and suites to create new levels of luxury, that confirm the five-star hotel’s status as one of the best in the world. The makeover of all 179 spacious guestrooms and suites draws on Japan’s rich culture, to provide guests with a strong “sense of place”. Japanese craftmanship has been combined with the latest technology to ensure a thoroughly contemporary Japanese experience. Renowned textile designer Reiko Sudo and art director Ryu Kosaka have transformed the guestrooms and suites, and built on the existing ‘Woods and Water’ interior design theme. Jeffrey A. Wilkes has acted as principal interior designer for the Presidential Suite, which is the largest and most luxurious suite in the hotel. Bespoke fabrics and furnishings representing the woodlands and the changing seasons, have been incorporated throughout, with autumn leaf colours of gold, orange and purple and blooming springtime wisteria and sakura patterns embroidered onto headboards. All accommodation has also been equipped with the latest Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), which allows for content to be viewed on both Apple and Android devices on 49-77 inch screens, offering highquality picture and sound. To honour the hotel’s location in Nihonbashi, an area that is closely connected to the culture of the Kimono, Reiko Sudo has used locally produced fabrics in all suite and guestroom interiors. Contemporary Japanese style and materials

abound, ranging from an embroidered headboard depicting weeping cherry blossoms to a light fixture made from bamboo strings. Curvaceous lines, such as the round table and curved back for the chaise longue, create a welcoming, approachable atmosphere. Featuring the original Flower Shower textile pattern on furnishings, such as the sofa and chairs in the living room, the hotel’s restyled suites are designed to conjure up thoughts of blissful moments with flowers. A wisteria in full bloom is embroidered onto each headboard, while each bedside chest is crafted with wood from the Paulownia tree. A silver-leaf round table and gold-leaf embossed cabinet brighten the living room, while the carpet blends the look of Japanese ink and brush work with a motif of clouds and gentle breezes, a nod to the extensive views of Tokyo that can be enjoyed from the hotel’s suites. Another quintessentially Japanese highlight are lampshades inspired by the Andon, a traditional Japanese lamp. Made from washi paper, these have been placed in asymmetrical positions throughout each bedroom, a distinctive characteristic of Japanese design and another example of the attention to detail paid by the designers. For a truly immersive cultural experience, guests can book Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo’s Nihonbashi Package which includes luxurious accommodation, breakfast for two and the choice of a cultural experience in the historic Nihonbashi district.. mandarinoriental.com

Il Ristorante Niko Romito Dubai Open for lunch and dinner, the 105-seat restaurant offers spectacular views over the Bvlgari Marina. The concept, created by the Michelin-starred chef, Niko Romito, is a celebration of ‘Made In Italy’. Working from his headquarters in Italy and regularly counselling his personallytrained resident chef Giacomo Amicucci, Chef Niko Romito brings to Il Ristorante a menu that optimally expresses the culture, elegance and vitality of everything that is quintessentially Italian. Hailing from the Italian region of Abruzzo, chef Niko Romito established a true ‘canon’ of contemporary Italian cooking by designing a concept which preserves his fundamental philosophy of simplicity, synthesis and a quest for the quintessence of flavor. Premium ingredients are sourced from Italy, locally and internationally, for a gastronomic approach based on quality and simplicity. The best extra virgin Carma oil, an award-winning organic

olive oil produced in Italy, a venture partnered by the Bvlgari family, is the only one used by the chef. On this theme of simplicity and Italian authenticity, bread is always the protagonist at the centre of the table, a key element of Romito’s philosophy and the mainstay of the Italian food culture. With broths and the Antipasto all’Italiana that encapsulate a grand tour of all the regions of Italy to recodified versions of marinated beef carpaccio, Linguine with basil pesto and hazelnuts, braised chicken, tiramisù and many more, there is no doubting the roots of Romito’s inspiration. Different menu options are available: à la carte and sharing menu, with a curated grape pairing selection, of which there are over 500 Italian and international offerings. An exclusive private dining room is adjacent to Il Ristorante which opens up to a private terrace overlooking the marina. bulgarihotels.com

Under the Sea

02 03

‘Under’, Europe’s first underwater restaurant, creates an unmatched visual and culinary experience.

Located at the southernmost point of the Norwegian coastline, where the sea storms from the north and south meet, the project is situated at a unique confluence. Marine species flourish in the both briny and brackish waters to produce a natural abundance in biodiversity at the site. The Snøhettadesigned restaurant also functions as a research center for marine life, providing a tribute to the wild fauna of the sea and to the rocky coastline of Norway’s southern tip. In Norwegian, “under” has the dual meaning of “below” and “wonder”. Half-sunken into the sea, the building’s 34-meter long monolithic form breaks the surface of the water to rest directly on the seabed five meters below. The structure is designed to fully integrate into its marine environment over time, as the roughness of the concrete shell will function as an artificial reef, welcoming limpets and kelp to inhabit it. Lying against the craggy shoreline,

140-141 Under Restaurant D44.indd 140

the structure’s half-meter-thick concrete walls are built to withstand pressure and shock from the rugged sea conditions. Like a sunken periscope, the restaurant’s massive window offers a view of the seabed as it changes throughout the seasons and varying weather conditions. The restaurant’s culinary focus is to create a fine dining experience based on high quality, locally- sourced produce, with a special emphasis on sustainable wildlife capture. Danish expatriate Nicolai Ellitsgaard from acclaimed restaurant Måltid in Kristiansand is the Head Chef, bringing a 16-person international kitchen team with experience from top Michelin restaurants. Upon arriving at the site, the visitor’s impressions of the unruly outdoors quickly dissolve as they are ushered through into the hushed, oakclad foyer. Here, rough, wooden finishes and the sweet scent of timber transition into an elegant, oak

staircase as one descends into the building. Dark, raw steel railings with brass tube handrails lead downwards to a softer interior as the ceiling surface changes from oak to textile. The warm, welcoming atmosphere inside the restaurant instills a sense of awe and mystery. As a metaphor for the journey of descent, the color of the textile-clad interior turns darker and more intense the deeper one goes below water. The bespoke textiles stretched over custom acoustic panels, reference the colors of a sunset dropping into the ocean, accompanying one’s passage down the stairs. At the entrance, the ceiling’s neutral color deepens into a sunset pink, intense coral, sea green, and finally culminates in a midnight blue as one arrives at the dining room. The subtle elegance of the finely woven ceiling panels lends a serene ambience to the building. On the mezzanine level and bar area, where the building touches the sea, a vertical window is cut

into the side of the building, extending from above sea level down to the seabed. The window reveals the convergence of sea and air, with the volatile waterline dancing to the intensity of the wind. At the seabed, in the 40-person dining room, lies the panoramic eye of the building. An eleven-meterwide and 3.4-meter-tall horizontal window offers a visual gateway to the sea and connects the guests to the wildlife outside. The view from the window will evolve gradually throughout the day and seasons, with the color of the water shifting from sapphire blue during a cold winter day, to emerald green in the summer season, when the algae set in. The sophisticated lighting system carefully minimizes the reflectivity of the panoramic window and maximizes the view of sea life outside the restaurant. 380 LED lamps are installed on the ceiling panels, illuminating the dining area with subtle yet pointed light. The light can be easily adjusted to respond to differing light

conditions inside and outside the building. The seabed outside will be lit up with artificial lighting during the dark hours, in order to attract fish. An equally important part of the project is the building’s facilitation of marine research. The restaurant will welcome interdisciplinary research teams studying marine biology and fish behavior, through cameras and other measurement tools that are installed on and outside the facade of the restaurant. Researchers from the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomic Research (NIBIO) and other research centers seek to learn how wild fish can respond to sound signals and to study fish behavior throughout the shifting seasons. The researchers will also help create optimal conditions on the seabed so that fish and shellfish can thrive in proximity to the restaurant. under.no 04

The Culinary Creative Renowned for his combination of French techniques and Japanese ingredients, Chef Noriuki Hamada never fails to produce innovative dishes. His meticulous designs are the main dining attraction at Hoshinoya Tokyo, where customers look to experience the mouth-watering creations of the award-winning chef.

When did you realize that your destiny was in the culinary arts? It was when I was in the 5th grade. That’s when I decided that I wanted to become a chef when I grow up.

How would you describe the cuisine at Hoshinoya Tokyo? At HOSHINOYA Tokyo, we serve ‘Nippon Cuisine’. The philosophy behind Nippon Cuisine is ‘Japanese ingredients multiplied by French technique ‘and ‘Ingredients multiple by ingredients’. I use traditional Japanese ingredients which are familiar to Japanese people, but I use cooking techniques that are different along with Japanese techniques to create something that has never been seen or eaten before. By using techniques that are uncommon for

142-145 Bon Appetit D44.indd 143

Japanese ingredients, we create something new and delicious. As for ‘Ingredients multiple by ingredients’, there are combinations of ingredients that have been known to go well together throughout history. Many Japanese ingredients that go well together are usually grown during the same season, and that is why they are commonly combined. What I do is analyze those combinations and create new ones for new ingredients.

What would you recommend to a first-time visitor at Hoshinoyo Tokyo? I recommend a first-time visitor at HOSHINOYA Tokyo to experience the authentic Japanese culture. Not only the dinner, but also the tea ceremony, Edo daikagura (traditional Japanese style juggling show), hot springs and the experience of living in a Japanese Ryokan.

Where do you source the ingredients from? We sources our fish from Shizuoka, Kanazawa, and Hokkaido. For vegetables and edible wild plants, we get them mainly from Nagano and Nigata.

Who were the biggest influences on your culinary philosophy or style? I can’t really pick one specific person because I met many people in my life and each one of them influenced me in many ways. Many people have been helping me become who I am today.

What was your best experience at a restaurant? When I visited ‘Regis et Jacques Marcon’ for one month for a training. All the staff welcomed me. The best part of that experience was that Chef Marcon cooked a special course meal all by himself

just for me. I was very happy that one of the top chefs in the world would cook me a special dinner by himself!

Are there any future projects or aspirations that you can share with us? My mission for the future is to have an action for sustainable food. I believe what I need to do is to make sure all the ingredients or products such as fish, vegetables, and edible wild plants will sustain for our children in the future. We can’t just think about ourselves and keep getting what we have for money. It’s our job to let everyone know about what is going on in the oceans, rivers, and mountains, and to make sure that we don’t waste any food and save what we have now. hoshinoya.com/tokyo

From France and Italy, artisans were chosen for their extraordinary skill and sense of wonder, to craft a bottle, leather trunk and pedestal, working tirelessly close to three years, to embody the indescribable wonder of Shumukh. Shumukh is the confluence of the seven elements of Dubai Durra, Baz, Aamal, Abjar, Narjesi, Haibah and Diwan. As generations come and go, Shumukh comes to you in a case that opens up to reveal the essence within. Flanked by the noble steed Abjar, watched over by the imperial falcon Baz, protecting the priceless treasures Durra, Haiba and Narjesi, displayed in the Diwan of Aamal, it is a majestic sight to behold. Made from the finest gold, silver and diamonds, Shumukh is a treasure beyond compare.

The F8 Tributo is the new mid-rear-engined sports car that represents the highest expression of the Prancing Horse’s classic two-seater berlinetta. It is a car with unique characteristics and, as its name implies, is an homage to the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history. The F8 Tributo sets the market benchmark for performance, driving pleasure and ease of handling. It makes the exhilarating performance of the best 8-cylinder in the world accessible to all drivers, with unprecedented handling and superior ride comfort. The F8 Tributo replaces the 488 GTB and, in the range, is the model with the highest performance matched by the greatest driver involvement. There are significant improvements across the board aimed at providing even better control on the limit along with greater on-board comfort.

In the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rear-mounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which creates an optimal weight balance, and thus delivers unparalleled thrillingly sporty driving, to perfection for over four decades. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s

150-159 Ferrari D44.indd 153

key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency. In fact, the F8 Tributo is the most aerodynamically efficient series-production mid-rear-engined berlinetta ever designed. Just like the Portofino and the 812 Superfast, the F8 Tributo combines design features from its predecessor with a few unique styling cues. In this case though, Ferrari also borrowed features from track-ready 488 Pista. All told, the F8 Tributo bridges the gap between the 488 GTB and the Pista, but spices things up with some unique cues.

The front fascia looks very familiar. The bumper is clearly related to the 488 Pista, sporting the same V-shaped opening in the center and large outlets on the sides. These have additional, smaller vents, which suggests that Ferrari made some changes to the car’s aerodynamics. The nose, on the other hand, is unique to this car. It’s more aggressive than the Pista’s and extends forward a couple of extra inches. The headlamps retain the shape and size of the 488 Pista, but the lower section is slimmer, which results in a more aggressive boomerang shape. The upper section, on the other hand, was replaced with a vent that feeds air to the front brakes. Ferrari dropped the dual-vent design of the front hood from the 488 GTB and adopted a single outlet in the center. The opening is smaller than the one on the Pista model though. But needless to say, the F8 Tributo looks just as aggressive as its track-ready sibling. The F8’s profile is again based on the Pista. Surprisingly enough, its side skirts have a more aggressive design with a longer wing toward the rear wheel and an additional winglet behind the front wheel. The rear fender vents retain the shape of the 488 GTB, but they feature a different vent configuration, likely for enhanced engine cooling and aerodynamics. The F8 rides on five-spoke, starshaped wheels — similar to those seen on iconic Ferraris from the 1980s — but you can pick from various rim designs in the configurator.

150-159 Ferrari D44.indd 154

Things become a lot more interesting in the back, where Ferrari redesigned almost everything above the diffuser. The diffuser itself is based on the 488 Pista’s, featuring aggressive fins and big exhaust pipes, but the fascia was heavily redesigned. Ferrari added two angled outlets on each side. They flank the taillights toward the fenders and them descent to flank the license plate recess until they almost meet with each exhaust pipe. The spoiler also wraps around the taillights, a new feature for the nameplate. More importantly, while the 488 GTB and Pista have one round taillight on each side, the F8 Tributo features the classic twin-light cluster. Inspired by legendary V-8 berlinettas from the past, like the 308 GTB, this feature found its way on other models as well. Both the F12berlinetta and FF adopted them when redesigned into the 812 Superfast and GTC4Lusso, respectively, leaving the Portofino the only current Ferrari with one-piece taillights. The F8 Tributo features state-of-the-art aerodynamics, integrating innovations and expertise developed thanks to the company’s involvement in the GT and Challenge championships. The solutions have been honed to create a series-production mid-rear-engined berlinetta with the highest level of performance available. The new lexan engine cover pays tribute to the iconic Ferrari F40. The horizontal louvers help extract hot air from the engine compartment

without impacting the efficiency spoiler, increase downforce generated at the rear. Ferrari claims that the changes made to the body improve aerodynamic efficiency by 10 percent compared to the 488 GTB. One of the main features that contribute to this increase is the S-Duct system in the front bumper. A solution that made its debut on the 488 Pista, it has been redesigned to suit the new bumper of the F8 Tributo. It was only through close synergy with the Ferrari Styling Centre that the strict aerodynamic constraints could be so flawlessly interpreted and integrated into the car’s design. A good example is the S-Duct at the front and the redesigned blown spoiler system at the rear which are underscored by the car’s clean yet decisive lines. The cockpit retains the classic, driveroriented look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined berlinettas. Every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel has been completely redesigned specifically for the car. The F8 Tributo also boasts a new generation steering wheel and steering wheelmounted controls as well as new styling on the standard seats. Ferrari made some upgrades to the cabin too. Notable changes include turbine-look A/C vents, a revised control unit on the center stack, and a brand-new seven-inch touchscreen display on the passenger-side dashboard. The steering wheel is based on the 488 Pista’s, but the rim is a bit smaller. The door panels and the center console showcase small revisions as well. 07

There’s also an upgraded HMI system, new contrast stitching on the dashboard and the seats, and bigger pieces of carbon-fiber all over the place. The seams seem identical to the 488 Pista, a big upgrade over the outgoing 488 GTB. The way the leather shell wraps around the center stack is also different, giving the dashboard a more organic design. As usual, you’ll be able to pick from many upholstery and trim options in order to create your unique interior. The F8 Tributo features an upgraded version of Ferrari’s already iconic 3.9-liter V-8 engine. The twin-turbo mill cranks out 710 horsepower, a 50-horsepower increase compared to the 488 GTB. Specifically, the F8 Tributo needs 2.9 seconds to sprint from 0 to 62 mph. That’s two tenths quicker than the 488 GTB and only 0.05 seconds slower than the 488 Pista. Charging to 124 mph takes 7.8 seconds, a half-second quicker than the 488 GTB. Compared to the Pista, the Tributo is only two tenths slower. When it comes to top speed, the F8 Tributo matches the Pista’s impressive 211-mph benchmark. That’s six mph more than the outgoing 488 GTB. On top of the extra power and the improvement aero efficiency, the F8 Tributo also boasts new

150-159 Ferrari D44.indd 158

technology compared to the 488 GTB. The sports car features the latest version of the Side Slip Angle Control (variant 6.1). The system also incorporates technologies such as E-Diff3, F1-Trac, the magnetorheological suspension (SCM) and, the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer. The latter debuted in the 488 Pista as a world-first feature that uses software to adjust the brake pressure at the calipers. Overall performance levels are significantly higher than those of the 488 GTB, thanks to the increase in power, weight reduction and improved aerodynamic coefficient. That performance is also now accessible to a larger number of drivers thanks to vehicle dynamics systems that make driving on the limit an easier and more confidence-inspiring experience. Designed to replace the 488 GTB after four years on the market, the F8 Tributo takes the best features from the 488 Pista and wraps them in a more road-friendly package. The Ferrari F8 Tributo is expected to be on the roads later this year and is available only through Euro Motors, the sole authorized dealership of Ferrari in Bahrain. euromotors.com.bh

Rolls-Royce Wraith Eagle VIII Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveiled its latest Collection Car, Wraith Eagle VIII, on the shores of Lake Como at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, 2426 May. Created by the Bespoke Collective at the House of Rolls-Royce, a Collection of just 50 Wraith Eagle VIII motor cars will tell the epic tale of one of the most pivotal moments of the 20th century. Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown braved uncharted skies to make the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June, 1919. Contemporaries of Sir Henry Royce, Alcock and Brown flew non-stop from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland in a modified First World War Vickers Vimy bomber aircraft. The bi-plane was powered by twin 20.3 litre, 350 bhp, Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines. It is from this remarkable engine that this Collection takes its name. Rolls-Royce marks the 100 year anniversary of this feat with a highly contemporary Collection that speaks to today’s adventurers, whilst honouring those who changed the course of history. The exterior of the Wraith Eagle VIII Collection Car is evocative of Alcock and Brown’s compelling night time adventure. Swathed in Gunmetal with a Selby Grey upper two-tone, the colours are separated by a brass feature line, a hint at the detailing that lies within. The black grille vanes draw immediate reference to the Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engine cowling on the Vickers Vimy aircraft, the wheels are part polished with a translucent shadow finish. Within, the finely executed interior mirrors the exterior hue. Selby Grey and black leather are accented by brass, redolent of the brass sextant

so integral to the success of the transatlantic journey. Executed in a contemporary fashion, the material populates key areas throughout the cockpit of the Collection. Brass speaker covers depict the estimated flight distance of 1,880 miles and ‘RR’ monograms are embroidered in brass coloured thread onto headrests. A flash of brass complements the navigator door paniers, whilst the door of the driver includes a brass plaque with Churchill’s quote commending the duo’s remarkable achievements. Inspired by the night time flight of our intrepid heroes, the fascia represents a modern-day abstract interpretation of the view the pair would have enjoyed as finally, their craft cleared the thick fog and cloud. In a fusion of contemporary and traditional practises, Smoked Eucalyptus wood is vacuum metalized in gold before being inlaid with silver and copper, to depict the rich detail seen in night-time images of the Earth from above. The scene extends to the centre console providing both an emotive and immersive experience for today’s occupants – the cockpit is in perspective with the headliner. Below, the brass-stitched quilted sides of the centre tunnel provide a direct nod to the V12 engined Vickers Vimy. Just 50 of these highly collectable motor cars will be created for discerning collectors at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex – a Centre of Global Luxury Manufacturing Excellence. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

Bugatti La Voiture Noire What a start to an anniversary year. At the first major international motor show in 2019, Bugatti is presenting two world premieres. At the Geneva Motor Show, the French luxury brand is showing the hyper sports car and the “110 ans Bugatti”. The special edition of the Chiron Sport, which is being produced in a limited series of 20 cars, celebrates the brand’s 110th anniversary as well as its French identity. However, the highlight will be the unveiling of “La Voiture Noire”, which had been kept secret up to the beginning of the show. This is a homage to the legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. This one-off grand tourisme has already been sold and is the world’s most expensive new car, at €11 million. “La Voiture Noire”1 Chiron Sport. The third model on the Bugatti stand is also in line with this approach: the Bugatti, is a hyper sports car which is being produced in a limited edition of 40 vehicles. With its modified aerodynamics, it is designed for even higher lateral acceleration and ensures extreme driving pleasure. With “La Voiture Noire“, the French luxury automobile brand has once again shown

that it produces the world’s most precious and exclusive hyper sports cars. The two-door car with its breathtakingly sculpted bodywork is especially elegant thanks to the use of deep black carbon fibre. In the world of the automobile, “La Voiture Noire” is a name with a special resonance: Ettore Bugatti’s son Jean developed and drove one of only four Type 57 SC Atlantic coupés produced. He called his Atlantic “La Voiture Noire“ – the black car. This vehicle disappeared without trace before the Second World War. Nowadays, it is considered one of the great mysteries in the history of the automobile and it would be incredibly valuable. “For Bugatti, ‘La Voiture Noire’ is more than just a reminiscence of the Atlantic. We are paying tribute to a long tradition, to France and to the creative work of Jean Bugatti,” says Stephan Winkelmann. “At the same time, we are transferring extraordinary technology, aesthetics and extreme luxury to a new age.” The special hyper sports car was hand-crafted for a Bugatti enthusiast. “La Voiture Noire” is a collection of superlatives,” says

Stephan Winkelmann. Apart from design, quality and materials, this also applies to the iconic power plant. The 16-cylinder engine with a displacement of 8 litres produces 1,103 kW/1,500 PS. A car collector purchased this unique vehicle for €11 million net, making it the world’s most expensive new car and continuing the long tradition of Bugatti. Since the company was first established in 1909, the French luxury brand has produced the world’s best and most powerful sports and luxury cars, true to Ettore Bugatti’s: motto: “if it is comparable, it is no longer Bugatti.” The Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti”, which is also being presented to the public for the first time in Geneva, is also in line with this tradition. In addition to all the benefits of a Chiron Sport, it not only includes the „Sky View“ option as standard equipment, but also several product features only offered for this model. This edition, limited to 20 units and with a net price of 3 million euros, has already sold out ahead of Geneva Motorshow. bugatti.com

MB&F Legacy Machine ‘Split Escapement’ Just below the highest point of the domed dial crystal, the balance of LM SE beats at a sedate, traditional 2.5Hz / 18,000bph. What is rather less traditional is its construction. Unlike most of the other suspended balances in the Legacy Machine collection — indeed, unlike any other balance outside of MB&F — the balance of LM Split Escapement seems to oscillate on its own, without any visible intake of energy. The essential remaining parts of the escapement, which provide the driving impulse – anchor and escape wheel – are concealed on the opposite side of the movement, almost 12 mm below; hence the name ‘Split Escapement’. mbandf.com

180-183 Mosques Book Review D44.indd 181

Houses of worship have served as a benchmark for the heights of human achievement since time immemorial—the more noble the holy shrine, the more noble the society, and built to exacting standards and to scales previously unimaginable. Over the centuries, civilizations have considered their own worth against the splendor of the local religious structure— and empires have asserted their dominance over lands and populations by virtue of the holy structures erected. This is particularly true in Islam, a religion whose structures proliferated across the known world of the “Islamic Golden Age,” coterminous with the

West’s “Dark Ages.” The birth of geometry and the invention of the double dome are but two inventions that contributed to the architectural splendor of the mosque. However, the mosque is much more than just a house of worship. It plays a complex role as an institution in which religious instruction is often given and a social center in which marriages and community meetings can take place. Wherever the mosque is built, it strives to be integrated into the sociological and urban landscape. It also plays the role of informing the architecture of the surrounding city and influencing its inhabitants.
