MARKING A MILESTONE

Deputy King, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, inaugurated the main studio of the Bahrain TV News Center and the private radio channels building at the Ministry of Information premises in Isa Town. Attended by the Minister of Information, HE Ramzan bin Abdullah Al-Noaimi, the inauguration follows the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of television broadcasting in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The

HRH the Deputy King highlighted the strategic role of the Kingdom’s national media in promoting Bahrain’s image and its achievements, which were made possible thanks to the visions of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He noted that the Kingdom’s rapid growth and development are supported by plans and programs implemented by Bahraini citizens who are committed to achieving success.

His Royal Highness then toured the main studio of the Bahrain TV News Center and the private radio channels building, which included state-of-the-art television and radio equipment and technology. He emphasized that the inauguration of the main studio of the Bahrain TV News Center and the private radio channels building advances Bahrain’s audio-visual media sector and the Kingdom’s competitiveness, in line with international best practices.

His Royal Highness recognized that the inauguration coincided with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of television broadcasting in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In this regard, HRH affirmed the importance of bolstering efforts to develop the media sector based on founding principles and commitment to providing a professional and impartial media discourse that serves the Kingdom, citizens, and its residents.

HRH the Deputy King noted that the Kingdom continues to put its trust in Team Bahrain, which has produced success stories in every field, including the media. His Royal Highness outlined the importance of continuing to invest in Bahraini media talents to support creativity and excellence across media production and performance.

is an essential tool to support the Kingdom’s development, including enhancing its media sector’s global relevance and competitiveness. HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad highlighted that Bahraini citizens’ determination has enabled the Kingdom to attain regional and international accomplishments. His Royal Highness commended the efforts, diligence, and dedication of employees at the Ministry of Information for responsibly spreading awareness and supporting the Kingdom’s wide-ranging development, as part of Team Bahrain.

HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad concluded by noting the importance of the media’s role in preserving the Kingdom’s identity and societal values.

During the inauguration, HRH the Deputy King met with Ahmed Hussein, where His Royal Highness expressed his sincere gratitude for his contributions, along with others at the Ministry, to the Kingdom’s radio and television sector.

Upon visiting the new private radio channels building, His Royal Highness joined radio broadcasters at the 96.5 radio station, in which HRH the Deputy King shared a message to the Kingdom’s younger generation, adding that “the world continues to change, change is the only constant, remain adaptable, remain curious and don’t settle for second best. keep pushing yourself keep pushing others around you to achieve the goals that shouldn’t just remain dreams in your head.”

contributions of Ahmed Sulaiman and a number of others that have contributed to developing Radio Bahrain 96.5 FM in the region, including: (Bob Macredy), (Adrian Ross), (Ian Fisher), and others.

For his part, the Minister of Information, HE Ramzan bin Abdullah Al-Noaimi welcomed HRH the Deputy King’s visit to the Ministry of Information, adding that the Kingdom’s advanced capabilities across the media sector are a testament to HM the King and HRH the Deputy King’s commitment to the Ministry’s efforts in furthering the media’s role to serve the Kingdom and its citizens.

HE Al-Noaimi expressed his gratitude to His Royal Highness for launching the main studio of Bahrain TV News Center and the private radio channels building.

The main studio of the Bahrain TV News Center is three times larger than the current studio and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to cover local, regional, and international events creatively and efficiently.

The private broadcasting studios building project has the latest electrical power systems to provide sustainable electric current for all technical devices and systems. The project’s opening coincides with the launch of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) technology, considered the third and most modern generation of broadcasting systems. The project was implemented in collaboration with radio technology companies to provide the best equipment and technologies for private radio stations.

Lieutenant General His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of the General Sports Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee inaugurated the ‘Qadha’ TV program during a ceremony at Seef Mall – Seef District.

Lieutenant General His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee inaugurated the ‘Qadha’ TV program during a ceremony at Seef Mall Manama. This follows the launch of the program by directives of Major General His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, National Security Advisor and Commander of the Royal Guard.

Also present at the ceremony were His Excellency Dr. Ramzan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Minister of Information Affairs, other dignitaries, and guests.

During the event, His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa praised the launch of the “Qadha” program, a unique youth and media initiative introduced by Lieutenant General His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The program aligns with His Highness’ dedication to fostering youth development by launching diverse initiative.

His Highness Shaikh Khalid added that ‘Qadha’ stands out as a crucial initiative that showcases the talents and potential of Bahraini youth through a series of physically demanding military

challenges that require fitness, resilience, and endurance. What sets it apart is its innovative production, making it a unique offering in the Arab world, providing a platform for young people to showcase their capabilities while instilling essential values in them.

Ahmed Al Shaikh, a filmmaker and the program’s director, extended his appreciation to Lieutenant General His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa for his support in launching the program, demonstrating His Highness’ commitment to empowering Bahraini youth. He also conveyed his gratitude to His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who conceived the idea of this program.

He added: “A year ago, when we opened registrations for the ‘Qadha’ program, we were surprised by the overwhelming response, with over 800 participants in just one week. Our dedicated team worked tirelessly, capturing more than 1,000 hours of raw footage using seven cameras. This material underwent an intense sixmonth editing process, expertly condensed into seven exciting episodes.”

Without doubt, the team in the kitchen led by our Executive Chef Steeven Gilles and by the front-of-house team led by Loyd Loudy and Ivana Basaric were key to this success. Their passion and dedication are key elements behind this recognition. Masso was created exactly 12 years ago based on our travels in Europe. It has been a passionate project for us to ensure that the ambiance is cozy and not pretentious and that the menu is curated carefully and meticulously tasted before being offered to our guests. We continue to push the boundaries in terms of shipping the best ingredients from Europe for our dishes to using the best designers for our dining room because Masso is a source of pride for us. The award is a recognition of that endless search for excellence but it has never been our pursuit. The best indicator of our success is the repeated visits of our guests and their testimonials throughout these last 12 years.

put ourselves in the position of the guest and have had a keen focus on what we would want to see and taste before offering it to our guests. We have to stand behind the experience and we continue to push the boundaries of what can be achievedboth in terms of recruiting the best talent and in terms of seeking to work with the best ingredients and partners to help craft these experiences. We do that for The Orangery, Masso and Palmyard Hotel, and we are excited to be creating new concepts in the next 12 months that will not only be new to Bahrain, but for the GCC as well. We are not looking at Bahrain as a benchmark. We are looking to create concepts and services that can be scaled regionally and globally.

WHAT STRATEGIES DOES AMRIYA GROUP DEPLOY TO SET ITSELF APART FROM THE COMPETITION?

I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead some wonderful organizations and what has become clear to me is that in order to create a high performing organization, you need to first set a clear strategy. Secondly, develop an operating model to deliver that strategy. Thirdly, and most importantly, hire the best people for the key positions in that operating model or organization. Amriya operates against the same guiding principles. What I believe can set us apart from the competition is to ensure we have a fantastic team that is motivated, operates like a team and is constantly seeking to deliver on excellence in everything they do. This is easier said than done, but my role is to make sure that 02

WHAT ROLE DOES INNOVATION PLAY IN KEEPING AMRIYA GROUP’S ESTABLISHMENTS FRESH AND APPEALING TO A DIVERSE CLIENTELE?

You have to be innovative and creative if you want to match the expectations of well-traveled guests. During COVID when restaurants were closed, we launched a high-end food delivery service under the name of “Dine In” which continues to thrive today. We wanted to create a food delivery platform that had a fairer commercial structure for restaurants and that could deliver fine dining in an elegant way. It was born out of necessity, but today, we have over 50 top-end restaurants on our platform that would otherwise not use a delivery service had we not created a much more elegant platform and service that matches the elegance of their cuisine. Ordering at home should not necessarily be about junk food and can be about having a healthy and elegant meal in the comfort of your home. As I said earlier, my team and I constantly travel to ensure we evaluate innovative concepts that we believe will delight and excite our guests. We created Circa more than a year ago because we wanted to combine great South American food with a lively atmosphere. The choice has usually been about either entertainment or good food, not usually both combined. We created Circa so that you could have both and we are delighted with our guests’ overwhelming reaction to this offering.

The Geneva Watch Days Exhibition has truly evolved into an institution within the industry. It originated as a response to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the cancellation of two historic watch fairs. Recognizing the need to support the watch industry during these challenging times, Bulgari, along with other brands, stepped in to fill the void. What started as an experiment gained confidence and momentum, transforming from a traditional fair into a dynamic forum. This transformation was made possible through increased interactivity and collaboration with prestigious institutions, including the state of Geneva, the Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, and Fondation du Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The event has now become one of the most official watch forums globally, thanks to support from renowned institutions. It’s not just a commercial fair. It’s a 360 immersive experience. What sets it apart is its decentralization and accessibility. It embraces the ‘phygital’ approach, making it possible for anyone, including clients and media who can’t travel to Switzerland, to connect with the event. Plus, the pricing structure, with even small brands benefiting, makes it distinct from traditional fairs.

YOU INTRODUCED THE OCTO FINISSIMO CARBONGOLD AT THIS EXHIBITION. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT WHAT MAKES IT A SPECIAL TIMEPIECE?

CarbonGold has a rich history within Bulgari, dating back to the 90s with the Bvlgari Bvlgari watch.

This revival focuses on the Octo Finissimo, a model known for using materials like titanium. The key innovation here is the use of forged carbon, distinct from the earlier version that was closer to plastics. This choice not only pays homage to the brand’s history but also enhances readability, especially in the perpetual calendar model. The polished gold hands and indices, combined with the matte carbon finish, make it stand out in terms of clarity. It’s also the lightest perpetual calendar in the market.

YOU ALSO ANNOUNCED THE BULGARI OCTO FINISSIMO TOURBILLON IN MARBLE FOR ONLY WATCH 2023. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS WATCH?

This timepiece is a groundbreaking creation because, to my knowledge, it’s the world’s first marble watch. Marble carries significant historical symbolism, deeply rooted in Roman heritage. Italy, more than any other country, has a rich history of using marble extensively in its palaces. It was a symbol of strength and wealth in the Roman Empire. Crafting a watch from marble is challenging, considering the size and nature of the material. This one is expected to be a star piece, and its auction proceeds will go towards charity, supporting medical research for genetic illnesses. Bulgari’s participation in Only Watch is driven by the cause of saving lives through increased funding for medical research.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE NEW HIGH JEWELRY COLLECTION?

The high jewelry collection draws inspiration from our iconic ladies’ watches. One of our signatures is the Serpenti collection. The Serpenti Secret Watch, with its movement concealed within the snake’s mouth, gained tremendous popularity. We’ve extended this concept to our Monete collection, inspired by ancient Roman coins. These coins served as a unique communication tool in history, allowing emperors to imprint their faces on currency to convey their power across the empire. This high jewelry collection features a one-of-a-kind piece, a Secret Monete

watch, highlighting the Caracalla family with the rare inclusion of his mother Julia. It’s a remarkable trilogy that showcases the historical significance of minting in the Roman Empire.

WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES THAT BULGARI LOOKS FOR WHEN IT COMES TO BRAND AMBASSADORS?

Bulgari’s focus is primarily on women, as we are jewelers with a strong emphasis on ladies’ watches. Inclusivity and diversity also are core principles for us. We don’t limit ourselves to just one brand ambassador. Instead, we embrace multiple faces that collectively represent a mosaic of today’s world.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES CURRENTLY FACING THE BRAND?

Bulgari operates in five different business categories, with jewelry being our primary focus. Our challenge lies in maintaining consistency across these categories while building a strong brand identity. We

aim to create a seamless experience for our clients, whether they are purchasing a watch, a wallet, or a necklace, they should instantly recognize it as Bulgari. This means focusing on a select few iconic pieces that ideally span across categories and act as binders. Serpenti is a prime example of such an icon, as it can be found in bags, watches, rings, and even the top of fragrance bottles.

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CHANGES YOU HAVE SEEN IN THE LUXURY INDUSTRY OVER THE YEARS?

One notable trend is the polarization between major brands that are rapidly expanding and consolidating their positions. At the same time, there’s a rise in creative niche brands that offer exclusivity not only to clients but also to retailers. This phenomenon extends across various segments, including watches, jewelry, and fragrances.

It is true that, contrary to other Swiss watchmakers, Vacheron Constantin has not designed measuring instruments intended for aircraft cockpits or car dashboards – with one exception recorded in our archives for the year 1928. On the other hand, the Maison very quickly made its mark in the creation of watches for aviation professionals and motoring enthusiasts. The advent of the wristwatch in the early 20th century enabled Vacheron Constantin to demonstrate its technical expertise in the production of chronographs, which have become benchmarks in sporting circles. Over the decades, these timepieces dedicated to the measurement of short periods of time have consistently proved able to adapt to the demands of contemporary life, in which sport and travel play an increasingly important role, without ever losing the characteristic elegance of these creations. The oldest Vacheron Constantin wrist chronograph – a gold monopusher model with a minutes counter – dates back to 1917. I could also mention the development by Albert Pellaton, a then associate of the Maison: namely a portable high-frequency precision device (72,000 vibrations per hour) designed for sports timing. This device was used for one of the many world water speed records set by Sir Malcolm

Campbell on Lake Hallwil in September 1938. While it was admittedly not a dashboard instrument, the principle is pretty similar.

WHAT WERE THE MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR LES CABINOTIERS ARMILLARY TOURBILLON?

Above all, it was a question of adapting Calibre 1990 calibre – unveiled in 2016 and developed by the same watchmakers behind the world’s most complicated watch, Reference 57260 – to the customer’s requirements and the technical particularities of a dashboard watch. For this singleedition timepiece, it was therefore necessary to develop a dedicated holder that had to be both secure and removable, as well as to conceptualize finishes worthy of High Watchmaking to show it off to its best advantage. In this case that meant polishing with PVD treatment and hand guilloché. The case had to be adapted (43.8 mm instead of 45 mm) to fit into a spot the same size as the vehicle’s control rack. The location and size of the crown (at 12 o’clock instead of the usual 3 o’clock) have also been modified. Vacheron Constantin went beyond its watchmaking expertise in designing and producing the holder. The latter had to be technical (the watch could be rotated 180° to admire the finishing on the caseback), safe (in the event of impact) and aesthetically pleasing (fitting in perfectly with the vehicle’s aesthetic codes while

preserving the Vacheron Constantin identity/DNA. This is precisely what makes this type of special order so interesting. It forces us to be imaginative and to step out of our comfort zone.

WILL THIS PROJECT BE FOLLOWED BY OTHERS OF THE SAME TYPE?

Created in 2006, Vacheron Constantin’s Cabinotiers department aims to revive the special spirit of Geneva’s 18th century cabinotiers by perpetuating the tradition of bespoke watchmaking. Each year, this department unveils an exclusive collection of single-edition creations. These are either created by Vacheron Constantin itself – for example on a specific theme as was the case in recent years with “Le Temps Céleste” or “Les Royaumes Aquatiques” – or made to order for clients. The latter kind of timepieces rarely become public knowledge, for obvious reasons of discretion desired by the customer. This is why we are delighted to be able to communicate on this Les Cabinotiers Armillary Tourbillon timepiece, designed exclusively for the patron of the Rolls-Royce Amethyst Droptail commission. As to whether this model will be followed by others of the same type, it is obviously impossible to predict future requests from lovers of personalized watchmaking. We can however safely state that will be delighted to respond to any such commissions.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE ON A CAREER IN THE HOTEL INDUSTRY?

I actually made the decision at a young age while visiting Quebec City. I was about 12 years old and I remember being in a large hotel property where there was a person conducting the elevators. He was the person in charge of the elevator and I thought to myself, ‘One day, I would love to do this!’ Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with leading hospitality brands in North America, Europe, and the Middle East. One of my proudest achievements was being part of the team that opened the first and only Sofitel hotel in Canada, where I served as the Director of Revenue Management. Later, I moved to Dubai and worked at the Sofitel JBR, my first experience in the Middle East. I was thrilled to work with my mentor, Sami Nasser, who brought me to Dubai. Currently, he is the new Global Chief Operating Officer for Fairmont.

WHAT STRATEGIES HAVE YOU USED TO BUILD A STRONG TEAM AND MAINTAIN A POSITIVE WORKPLACE CULTURE?

Well, maintaining a positive workplace culture is crucial to me, and I am particularly proud of the diversity and culture we have built within our team. I have made a conscious effort to bring in

people from various nationalities, backgrounds, and experiences, which is easier said than done in this region. However, I strongly believe that it has been worth the effort and has contributed to our success in creating a positive and inclusive work environment.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT THE HOTEL MAINTAINS HIGH STANDARDS OF CUSTOMER SERVICE?

Currently, we are constantly improving our product, as we aim to maintain our reputation as one of the best properties on the Palm. Our established reputation and level of service will help us navigate the renovation and refurbishment process, which will be essential in explaining to our clients what they can expect from us in the future. As part of my role, I am preparing our teams to be ready to communicate effectively with clients about the changes and improvements we are making to ensure that we maintain high standards of customer service.

WHAT ARE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES YOU FACED SO FAR?

The most significant challenge I have ever faced was during the pandemic. I hope that my children, who were also impacted, will never have to go through what we did again in their lives. For me specifically, having to let go of 150 people

in my previous property in just two days was an incredibly difficult experience for me. However, the good news is that we were able to rehire a lot of our staff as soon as business picked up again. It was an incredible feeling to bring back many of the people we had to let go, either by hiring them directly or transferring them to other properties. Another challenge is maintaining occupancy levels at The Palm Dubai, especially with the increased competition. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, we have been able to maintain the same levels of occupancy as before. Palm Jumeirah recently added 2000 rooms and 25 F&B outlets, which has resulted in a price pressure among our competitors. We are determined to maintain the same level of occupancy and believe that being more efficient will be the key to success. Managing the P&L is also a challenge, but I believe

that there is still potential for a luxury approach to the hotel industry in Dubai, and we are working to better understand how to achieve greater success in this area.

WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR FAIRMONT THE PALM?

My goal is to maintain the reputation and name of Fairmont The Palm as one of the best properties here. Currently, the Fairmont brand is undergoing a significant shift in terms of its positioning, with a new CEO and direction. Recently, we were in Doha discussing the path we want to take for Fairmont. For us, food is the cornerstone of the cultural tapestry we are so proud to be a part of. THE NEW GUEST CHEF SERIES SOUNDS INTRIGUING. CAN YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT THIS SERIES?

We enjoy offering our customers memorable experiences, and one way we do this is by seasonally refreshing our menu. This time, we decided to do something different and invite guest chefs to prepare something special for our guests. This way, they can experience globally renowned culinary trends while still enjoying the familiar comforts of Indigo Terrace. We’re hosting two chefs over the next couple of months - Chef Memis Alkan will be here from 28th November

to 2nd December, followed by Chef Paulo Sanapo who will join us from 30th January to 3rd February. The guest chefs will each stay for 5 days, both between Tuesday and Saturday. During the 5 days, guests will be able to sample their signature menu selection. Additionally, the chefs will curate a special 5-course set menu for Thursdays and Fridays and a special brunch menu for Saturdays. We shall also offer the chefs’ speciality menu for a month after their visit so that those who missed their opportunities would still be able to partake, or those who want a second helping of the dishes can come back for more. There are two cuisines to look forward to. Chef Memis is a master of Turkish cuisine. His style of cooking is a combination of traditional Turkish and contemporary European. Chef Paolo on the other hand is renowned for his modern European cooking. His skills have won him several awards, including two Travelers Choice Awards.

COULD YOU ELABORATE ON THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE MERCHANT HOUSE’S APPROACH TO ENHANCING THE GUEST EXPERIENCE AS A BOUTIQUE HOTEL?

We have a very simple service culture philosophy. It can be distilled to the three I’s -

But we don’t stock art just to decorate empty spaces; rather, the artwork that is showcased is a reflection of our desire to honor the local culture in which we live. That’s why local artists like, Omar Al Rashid, Jamal Abdulrahim, Mariam Fakhro, Sahar Ahmadi and Hesham Sharif are my personal favorites. Every piece of art that we choose to display enhances the aesthetic and atmosphere we wish to convey - an elevated, yet positive existence. Apart from local masters, our guests will recognize some of the better-known Western artists such as Picasso, Dali, Dufy, Warhol and Hirst.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE THE INTEGRATION OF ART WITH THE OVERALL COMFORT AND FUNCTIONALITY THAT GUESTS EXPECT FROM A LUXURY HOTEL?

As I alluded to earlier, the art that we exhibit is intended to convey key elements of our brand - respect for culture and an appreciation for the vibrancy of life. Furthermore, presenting original works of art provides a touch of elegance that is unique to our property and difficult to duplicate elsewhere. We have had guests write to us after their visit saying that they found solace in simply staring at and losing themselves in the art. It’s an experience that they just can’t have in other

I believe we have hosted guests from over a hundred countries since we opened. In order to successfully meet each guest’s needs, we must therefore customize and individualize our offerings. Being a boutique property enables us to focus on the details, those small touches that make a world of difference to our guests as we believe everything matters. For instance, each suite is designed to be a work of art in itself, reflective of both local culture and global sensibilities. This allows us to appeal to a diverse clientele, from business travelers to tourists, and from those looking for a taste of Bahrain to those who desire the comfort of world-class luxury. Our culinary team is also deeply aware of the diversity of our guests, which is why they take great care to design a menu that ensures that there is

something for everyone. I’m glad that you brought up attention to detail because that is something we take immense pride in. Our guests always appreciate our meticulous approach to their preferences. They need to communicate their preferences just once and we then curate their whole experience, from the positioning of personal items to the type of pillows, to the room’s setup to perfectly match their ideal. We even empower our guests to quickly and conveniently customize their environment so that they feel right at home. Every suite is equipped with our Messerschmitt

system. This gives them the ability to control the room temperature and lighting levels with a single controller, located on each bedside table. Our personalization of the guest experience also extends to Indigo Terrace. We maintain a detailed record of everyone’s choices related to food and drinks. For instance, if a guest has previously mentioned an intolerance or preference, our restaurant staff is informed in advance, and this ensures an outstanding dining experience without the need for reminders.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT NEXT FROM THE MERCHANT HOUSE?

It’s thrilling to look into what we shall be offering in the future. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START CREATING ART-USING SCRAP FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE IN METALWORK, IN RELATION TO THE SAYING, “ONE MAN’S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE”?

My recycled metal scrap sculptures offer me a chance to speak out about our society’s issues and connect with the world through art. I find inspiration in transforming discarded materials into meaningful creations, especially by focusing on recycling to protect our environment. Using materials like motorcycle tanks, brake pads, car struts, bolts, nuts, and electric generator parts, I emphasize the visible signs of infrastructural decay in my home country (Nigeria). Through these discarded scraps that have cluttered our surroundings, I’ve found a unique way to retell Nigeria’s story, shedding light on its challenges. When you look at my sculptures, you’ll witness a glimpse of life’s reawakening even after its original purpose has ended. These scrap metals breathe life into the forms of animals, both wild and domestic, as well as human figures. To enhance the final pieces, I incorporate colors that beautify and partially cover the hardships these scrap metals have endured. My aim is to remind us that every fragment can find a new purpose, transforming what was once considered waste into art and advocating for a healthier environment.

COULD YOU SHARE THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR ARTWORK TITLED ‘HAND OF GOD’ FROM 2018?

My inspiration for creating the sculpture titled Hand of God came after experiencing a divine shift in my career in 2018. Over the years, I had created several arts and “toiled all night long” without any significant progress in my practice, but when I finally felt the touch of God, my endless struggles became a luxury, and my rubbish became rubies.

WHILE YOUR ART PRIMARILY FOCUSES ON PROTESTING WASTE IN THE ENVIRONMENT, DO YOU FEEL THERE ARE ANY OTHER MESSAGES THAT OFTEN GO UNNOTICED WHEN PEOPLE VIEW YOUR ART?

Apart from the fact that my body of works addresses the issues of waste management and conservation, infrastructural decay, and the need to repurpose and recycle the large army of waste that makes our environment unsightly, my sculptures also promote African culture, alluding to folklore and folktales, signs and symbols, moral values, and ethics. Some of my works have been used to document long-forgotten history and myths, with a special focus on Yoruba heritage.

YOUR MURALS OFTEN FEATURE ANIMALS. DO DIFFERENT ANIMALS SYMBOLIZE SPECIFIC THEMES IN YOUR WORK?

AS AN ARTIST WHO FREQUENTLY MOVES AROUND, WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU ENCOUNTER WHEN CREATING ART IN DIFFERENT PLACES?

An especially distressing incident transpired in a particular country. In the span of a single day, while diligently toiling outdoors, I bore witness to a series of meteorological shifts. The day commenced with an intense morning sun, which abruptly surrendered its reign to a sudden and relentless downpour. Swiftly after the cessation of the rainfall, just as I was preparing to resume my work, an unanticipated hailstorm materialized.

There have also been instances when I found myself laboring amidst treacherous snowstorms and enduring temperatures as low as negative thirty degrees Celsius (-300C) in other places. Despite the fact that my home country never experiences the kind of climatic impediments I encounter abroad, the worst sometimes happens back home. How could I explain the fact that I run my studio solely on generators due to a lack of constant electricity supply from the government grid, which makes me spend more of the proceeds on buying fuel (PMS)? Burning petrol produces carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon monoxide, etc., which are both harmful to human health and the environment. It becomes a concern when the process of making works that protest against the abuse of the environment ends up contributing to environmental pollution.

COULD YOU PROVIDE SOME INSIGHTS INTO ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

I am currently in the process of establishing a distinguished Scrap Art Museum situated in the southwestern region of Nigeria. The essence of this museum is to provide an avenue that enables both budding recyclers and the public to experience an array of meticulously crafted synergetic sculptures. The projected scope of the museum encompasses

not only the permanent display of local creations but also those of international artists who share a passion for this unique art form. The core purpose of the museum revolves around the collection, preservation, scholarly examination, and presentation of artistic endeavors created from recycled and repurposed materials. As an integral part of this endeavor, I have commenced the construction of a series of monumental sculptures that will serve as a captivating introduction to the museum’s exterior ambiance. My artistic journey thus far has woven a tapestry of collaboration, uniting diverse individuals within local communities. Through resourceful transformation, I have harnessed donated scraps from various contributors, infusing a sense of personal connection as each contributor identifies their materials within the harmonious assemblage. My envisioned scrap art museum holds tremendous promise for fostering widespread community engagement. Beyond its artistic merits, it stands as a platform for economic empowerment, both within the confines of our nation, continent and on a global scale. By championing the cause of recycling and repurposing waste materials, this initiative possesses the potential to ignite significant positive change in African society and enrich lives globally.

First stop: India, with a necklace whose reversible structure, interplay of color and motifs pay homage to traditional Mughal jewellery. On one side, light bursts from the fire of diamonds, white gold and sculpted rock crystal. On the other, an explosion of red, green and blue lacquer elements make reference to an emblematic Cartier color combination.

The center features three oval brilliant-cut diamonds, visible on both sides. Each pavilion is set in a translucent rock crystal motif that harmonizes the volume at the back and leaves the diamonds visible. This highly precise lapidary work is repeated on the rock crystal drops around the edge of the necklace, whose design is reminiscent of the boteh motif, an inseparable part of the Indian repertoire. The back of each diamond pavé motif is lacquered in red, green, or blue and the finished creation gently drapes over the skin, whatever the chosen look.

Bailong

As we look ever further afield, why not go all the way to the farthest reaches of Asia? Cartier is passionate about the beauty of its myths, which the jewellers have translated into a sovereign piece. From the crest to the scales and slender limbs, the dragon, a faithful creature of the Cartier bestiary, is

filled with an intense energy that is reinforced by the realism of the design. Both protector and predator, dominating a 30.11-carat octagonal tourmaline, it holds a yellow diamond in its clutches. Its eye sparkles with the fire of a yellow pear-cut diamond.

Pineas

Pinecone or wisteria? For Cartier, the plant world is an infinite source of inspiration, and for this piece an abstract approach has been taken. Abstract, but brimming with vitality, as reflected in its organic appearance, its great flexibility and the vivacity of its color palette.

This necklace features two slightly asymmetrical pendants made of pavé rose gold scales enhanced by coral or emerald details. Reminiscent of the structure of pine cones, these motifs are arranged in staggered, overlapping rows. This voluminous, articulated architecture culminates in a waterfall of singularly cut gems. Two separate vines hold a series of faceted beads, with two yellow briolettecut diamonds weighing a total of 14.59 carats and two hexagonal Colombian emeralds weighing 25.84 carats.

Miraggio

The starting point: a line of Ceylon sapphires around which everything is structured. On either side,

sapphire and emerald motifs form a symmetrical grid punctuated by graphic onyx details that produce an almost kinetic effect. This structure reveals an organization in distinct planes, like architecture. The overall effect is a chromatic signature of the Maison, dubbed the “peacock motif” by Louis Cartier.

This creation, which combines geometry, optical effects, and volume design, is based on the work of two experts. Before the first designs were created in the Design Studio, the Maison’s gem experts found a group of sapphires remarkable for their rare harmony of color and shape. Next, eighteen sapphires and thirty-six emeralds were cut into triangles by the Maison lapidaries and then set one by one in motifs assembled on several levels, in a setting designed to emphasize the aesthetics of a necklace that slips effortlessly over the skin.

Cartier has made a 4.15 carat yellow-brown Fancy diamond, with an original diamond cut, the centerpiece of this ring with a dazzling game of volume. The architecture of the shapes and the choice of this singular solar diamond make this an intensely Cartier creation.

the emotion it expresses, each one is enhanced by the elegance of a large-facet French cut. In honour of these remarkable stones, the craftspeople have redoubled their inventiveness, sculpting gold into lace or graphic petals, combining the most daring settings and conceiving clasps that are as clever as they are invisible. This new testament to savoir-faire affirms a Chaumet signature: transformable pieces. Continuously created throughout the Maison’s history, these examples correspond to contemporary desires, and can be worn in a wide variety of ways. Hublot loves Daniel Arsham! The Swiss watchmaker continues its quest to be first, unique by announcing the American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham as a new Ambassador. Based in New York City, Daniel is known for his powerful works across painting, sculpture, installation, and film. He has frequently explored the concept of time throughout his oeuvre, particularly through his Connecting Time series of works and his iconic Hourglass.

To start the clock on the new collaboration and to celebrate the eternal links between watchmaking, art and craft, Daniel will unveil a temporary 20-meter sundial in the snowscape of the Swiss mountain resort of Zermatt, in the shadows of the Matterhorn, the most recognizable peak in the Swiss Alps. The ephemeral installation, titled Light & Time uses natural elements to merge the roots of timekeeping with the craftsmanship in land art. The functioning outdoor timekeeping installation is based on the shadows cast by the quartz crystal shaped obelisk. As the sun moves throughout the day, the shadow cast by the

central pointer indicates the time in the raked snow. Arsham has blended form and function, creating the sundial out of the natural elements in the Swiss Alps. In this way, snow and light are combined to connect his own crystalized universe with the heritage and history within Hublot’s Swiss watchmaking craft. The sundial will echo Hublot’s design language, integrating familiar cues such as the famous screws that hold the Big Bang’s bezel in place. The installation will also come with a twist: it will only be visible from the top of the mountain. To view it, art lovers will have to use Zermatt’s ski lifts.

Hublot’s love of art can also be seen from the exclusive event that took place at the Glass House in New York, where Hublot and Takashi Murakami announced their fourth joint artistic project: the launch of thirteen new NFTs and thirteen unique timepieces. This announcement represents a continuation of past projects, by rewarding the first buyers of the watches and collectors of the first NFTs through an exclusive approach.

The thirteen unique NFTs are inspired by Japanese video games & TV from the 1970s as well as the Classic Fusion Takashi Murakami All Black, the first collaboration between the Swiss watchmaker and Takashi Murakami launched in January 2021. These NFTs are linked to a limited edition of 13 new and unique Classic Fusion watches that will be at Watches & Wonders 2023 in Geneva. At the end of the 1930s, IWC built at the request of two Portuguese merchants, a large wristwatch with the precision of a pocket watch. For this purpose, they used the pocket watch movement calibers 74 and 98. The noticeably large and striking wristwatch first was launched in 1939.

The iconic design of the Portugieser watches, with their imposing size, simple Arabic numerals, slim feuille hands and railway-track-style chapter ring, originated in the 1930s, when it was well ahead of its time. Today, the original, clearly organized dial with its simple design remains an unrivaled style icon.

With a design that is as crisp as it is timelessly modern, the IWC Portugieser has turned into an icon of watchmaking.

IWC Schaffhausen recently introduced two new additions to the iconic Portugieser collection: the Portugieser Automatic and the Portugieser Chronograph.

Both watches feature stainless steel cases, contrasting white and blue dials with the characteristic railwaytrack style chapter ring, blue Arabic numerals, and blued feuille hands. The Portugieser Automatic is powered by the IWC-manufactured 52010 caliber with a power reserve of 7 days and fitted with a blue

alligator leather strap. The Portugieser Chronograph features the IWC-manufactured 69355 caliber chronograph movement and a blue rubber strap.

A design with a marked contrast between the dial and the subdials, often affectionately referred to as “panda dial” by watch enthusiasts, has frequently featured in IWC’s Portugieser collection. The combination of the two colors improves legibility and makes for a very distinctive appearance. This summer, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer presents two of its most iconic Portugieser models in a unified design code with contrasting white and blue dials. The white dials boast a polished lacquer finish, while the deep blue sub dials feature an “azurage” finish. Such nautical colors not only lend these classic models a fresh and contemporary look: they are also a reminder of the origins of the Portugieser, whose iconic design was initially inspired by marine deck observation watches.

The Portugieser Automatic (Ref. IW500715) features a stainless steel case with a diameter of 42.3 millimeters, a white and blue dial, and blued feuille hands. The balanced dial layout places the small seconds at 9 o’clock and the power reserve display at 3 o’clock.

This timepiece is powered by the IWCmanufactured 52010 caliber. Its automatic Pellaton winding system has been reinforced with components made of virtually wear-free ceramic. It uses even the slightest movements of the rotor in both directions to build up a power reserve of 7 days in two barrels. The movement can be admired through the sapphire glass case back. The Portugieser Chronograph (Ref. IW371620) features a 41-millimetre case made of stainless steel, a white and blue dial, and blued feuille hands. M+ is Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture. Designed by the world-renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with TFP Farrells and Arup, the M+ building is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world, set to become a significant addition to the global arts and cultural landscape as well as a new international architectural icon.

The 65,000-square-metre M+ building houses 17,000 square meters of exhibition space across thirty-three galleries. It also includes three cinema houses, a Mediatheque, a Learning Hub, a Research Centre, two museum shops, restaurants and a cafe, M+ Lounge, and office spaces, with a Roof Garden that commands spectacular views of Victoria Harbour.

Most galleries are arranged on a large podium level on the second floor offering visitors a fluid, interconnected experience of the exhibitions. The tower defines a visual dialogue with the urban landscape of Hong Kong. The podium and tower are united as concrete structures clad in ceramic

tiles that reflect the changing conditions of light and weather while standing out from nearby glass and steel skyscrapers. Works drawn from the M+ Collections as well as new commissions are presented in exhibitions across thirty-three galleries and other display spaces such as the Main Hall, Found Space, and The Studio, introducing the chronological developments and multifaceted narratives of visual culture from the 1950s to the present day. These displays emanate from a uniquely Hong Kong perspective coupled with a global vision.

M+ boasts an impressive array of artistic achievements, encompassing 6,709 works. The M+ Sigg Collection contributes 1,510 works, while the Library Special Collection offers a curated selection of 501 published materials. We were graciously hosted by Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates during our trip. The luxury five-star hotel is one of the best hotels in the UAE. Located in the heart of Dubai and directly connected to the world-class Mall of the Emirates, it has over 375 rooms and suites featuring stunning skyline views, with 20 unique Aspen Chalets overlooking the stunning Ski Dubai’s slopes.

Upon our arrival at the aquatic wonderland known as Atlantis Aquaventure, we were amazed at the variety of water slides, lazy rivers, and marine life encounters. Whether we were racing down thrilling slides or peacefully floating along, the backdrop of Dubai’s skyline added to the magic of this waterpark.

Spanning 22.5 hectares, Atlantis Aquaventure has three themed towers set on 1 kilometer of beachfront, and more than 105 attractions and experiences for visitors to enjoy. It recently set a new Guinness World Record for the most water slides in a water park, with 50.

Our next stop was at Wavehouse, where we enjoyed tucking into burgers and pizzas. The

industrial-chic restaurant is the perfect spot to get a delectable bite in a lively ambience, or head outside to the sun-soaked terrace, where live tunes, swinging seats, and a festival vibe.

For an adrenaline rush intertwined with captivating storytelling, The Storm Coaster at Dubai Hills Mall was a highlight. The drops, twists, and turns were exhilarating, and the narrative elements of the ride made it even more engaging. The sensation of flying through the air while being part of an unfolding story was a memorable experience to be cherished. The Storm Coaster is the fastest indoor rollercoaster in the world, letting you ride up a 670 meters track at the speed of 41 km/hour.

We enjoyed a meal at KATA. Located in The Dubai Mall, the homegrown Japanese restaurant brings authentic cuisine to Dubai, and its dayto-night concept delivers a world-class dining experience with freshly prepared dishes and expertly mixed non-alcoholic beverages. Outside at the vast terrace, we were treated to views of the iconic Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Fountain. Afterwards, we ventured to the top of the Sky

During our recent journey to Dubai, we were treated to a harmonious fusion of exhilarating adventures and captivating artistic encounters. The city offers many incredible destinations, but five of them, in particular, left a lasting impression on us.

Views Observatory to enjoy the panoramic view of Dubai’s urban landscape. The architectural marvels, illuminated against the night sky, created a mesmerizing play of light and shadow that showcased Dubai’s charm in a whole new light.

Located on floors 52 and 53 of the twin Address Sky View Hotel, the Observatory offers an unforgettable experience. You can take a thrilling ride in the panoramic glass elevator to more than 219.5 meters above the ground, walk the 46-meter glass floor, and enjoy spectacular views of the city’s fabulous skyline and shining coast.

Our next destination was Honeycomb Hi-Fi, where eclectic global sounds, Izakaya style dining, rotating art exhibitions, a vinyl record, and book shop are all part of the offerings. Located at Pullman Dubai Downtown, guests can also enjoy weekly DJ sets and listening sessions presented on a bespoke Ojas sound system in this new home for wax lovers of all stripes. Classic Izakaya dishes and signature creations by Chef Matt Abergel feed the soul.

At Al Habtoor City, we had the privilege of witnessing La Perle-a captivating blend of acrobatics, aquatic choreography, and sheer creativity. The performers defied gravity with their stunning feats, seamlessly transitioning between water and air. This unique performance was a true testament to Dubai’s ability to present art in the most mesmerizing ways.

Another unmissable attraction is Babylon DIFC. Billed as ‘Dubai’s Ultimate Dinner and Show Experience’, the part chic restaurant, part energetic club is influenced by the city of Babylon, once a thriving metropolis and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

We also explored more of Dubai’s popular culinary destinations during our trip, such as

Bubbalicious, where they serve an exciting Friday brunch at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi. Catering to young and old, families, couples and groups alike, and with more than 10 live cooking stations in three of Dubai’s hottest restaurants, Bubbalicious is the trendiest, liveliest, and among the most interactive brunches in Dubai. Another favorite of ours was Gallery 7/40. Located on Palm Jumeirah’s The Palm West Beach and inspired by Italian contemporary art, the restaurant is a space where culinary creations from a demonstration kitchen coexist with sculpture, photography, and painting. Spanish Tapas and authentic Greek coastal cuisines are served in a simple yet entertaining way, beautifully blending with the venue’s vibrant atmosphere and the surrounding landscape. Our artistic journey reached its pinnacle at the Theatre of Digital Art (TODA) at Souk Madinat in Jumeirah. Surrounded by immersive projections, we were immersed in a world where classical and contemporary art converged in a symphony of visuals and sound. It was a remarkable way to connect with renowned artists’ masterpieces on a whole new level.

Our Dubai escapade was a perfect mix of thrills and cultural exploration. The city’s dedication to offering a diverse range of experiences always leaves us impressed. I began my professional culinary journey at the age of 15 in Paris, much to my parents’ surprise, as they didn’t expect me to pursue this career path. I spent five years working in various Michelin Star Restaurants in Paris. Afterward, I embarked on a new chapter by moving to the USA. I had the privilege of working under Chef Gunter Seeger in Atlanta, followed by a stint at L’Orangerie in Los Angeles. I spent a fulfilling decade in London, where I joined Joel Robuchon’s team. I started as a Chef de Partie and worked my way up to Chef de Cuisine, leading a talented team of 27 chefs. Following my tenure with Robuchon, I took on the role of Executive Chef at Bokan Restaurant in Canary Wharf, while also offering consultancy services for the ACCOR hotel group. Later on, due to my husband’s job offer, I relocated to Hong Kong and joined Odyssee restaurant for four years before embracing the challenge of leading the culinary team at Felix, an iconic establishment in Hong Kong.

I also make an effort to incorporate local produce like herbs, mushrooms, and select vegetables.

A) Crab Mix:

INGREDIENTS

• 35g of Crab Meat

• 15g of Crab Leg

• 1g of Chop Coriander

• 1g of Chop Mint

• 1g of Chop Basil

• 1g of Chop Ginger

• 5g of Lemon Dressing

• Pm Espelette & Salt

Method

Mix all together to order.

B) Guacamole:

INGREDIENTS

• 7 pcs of Avocado (Ripe & Green)

• 1/2 pc Onion Very Finely Chop

• 1 pc of Very Finely Chop Garlic

• Pm of Fresh Lemon Juice

• Pm Crush Ice

• Pm Salt

• Pm Tabasco

• Pm Olive Oil

Method

Open and cut the avocado, saving as much of the green part as possible. In a hot pan, quickly sauté the avocados with olive oil, then deglaze with lemon juice. Blend the mixture with a little crushed ice, and pass it through a sieve into an ice bath. Season generously with all the other elements - have the chef taste it! Place 40g at the bottom of each bowl.

C) Tomato Jelly:

INGREDIENTS

• 5 kg of Cherry tomatoes

• 1 bunch of Basil

• 20g of Salt

• 10g of Juniper berries

• 10g of Pepper

• 5 pcs of Bay Leaf

• Put 3 Leaf of Gelatine for 400g of Liquid

Method

Blend tomatoes and mix them with the other ingredients. Allow them to marinate in the fridge for 24 hours, then strain through a towel. Warm up the mixture to add gelatine. Cool it on ice before adding it to the Guacamole (20g).

D) Serving:

In a glass bowl, layer the guacamole, then cover it with tomato jelly, followed by a layer of tomato oil. Arrange the crab salad in a ring on top, and finish by adding micro coriander, croutons, and pentas flowers.

A) Scallop Bread:

INGREDIENTS

• 1 kg of Scallop (Defrost and very Dry0

• 800g of Cream

• 250g of Soft Butter

• 16g of Salt

• 50g of Chop Truffle

• 8g of Truffle oil

• Pm of Rolled out Bread

• Pm of Butter

Method

In a chilled Robot Coupe, combine the scallops, salt, truffle, oil, and butter, blending until smooth. Gradually incorporate the cream while continuing to mix. Transfer the mixture into a mold and steam for 45 minutes at 80 degrees. After steaming, allow it to cool down, then portion it. Serve by placing a slice of bread with soft butter on both sides of the scallop mixture.

B) Sea Urchin Mayo:

INGREDIENTS

• 100g of Hokkaido Sea Urchin

• 200g of Mayo

• 10g of Chop Tarragon

• 20g of Lemon Juice

• 1 lemon Zest

• 1g of Espelette Pepper

• Pm of Salt

Method

Mix all in blender, finish with chop tarragon.

C) Bisque:

INGREDIENTS

• 5 kg of Lobster Heads • 110g of Rice

• 500g of Onions • 2 litres of Cream

• 500g of Shallots • 300g of Brandy

• 30g of Garlic • 1 bottle of White Wine

• 500g of Fennel • Pm of Butter

• 350g of Tomatoes • Pm of Salt

• 110g of Celery Branch • Pm of Espelette Pepper

• 2 litres of Chicken Stock • 150g of Tomato Paste

• 1 pce of Thai Chili (Bird eye) • 1 bunch of tarragon

Method

Remove the outer layers from the leeks and cut them into quarters. Roast them with olive oil. Next, add the butter and all the vegetables except the tomatoes, and sauté until they’re well colored. Deglaze and flambé with the brandy, then introduce the wine, tomatoes, tomato paste, and rice. Let it reduce, then add all the other liquids and the tarragon. Bring the mixture to a boil, then let it boil for 25 minutes. Cover and let it infuse for an additional 30 minutes. Blend the mixture thoroughly using a soup mixer. Pass it through a vegetable mill, mix again, and strain it through a chinois. Season the mixture and incorporate 500g of fresh butter.
