I’d like to begin by extending my heartfelt condolences to the people of Britain over the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her leadership and dedication were exemplary, and she leaves behind a legacy of an icon. Durrah pays tribute to Her Majesty and looks at her close ties with the Kingdom of Bahrain during her reign.

In this issue, we talk to the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, His Excellency Mohammed bin Thamer Al-Kaabi as we approach the launch of Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) 2022. This year marks the 6th edition and the 10-year anniversary of this prestigious exhibition, considered a key aviation event in the Kingdom and the region.

We also chat with Fawzi Al Shehabi, one of Bahrain’s pioneering event organizers and a cofounder of Jewellery Arabia. His contributions helped shape the exhibition industry over decades. Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort and Spa General Manager, Marco den Ouden shares with us the

Queen Elizabeth IIA life in service (1926-2022)

Shortly after celebrating 70 years on the throne in June 2022 with her Platinum Jubilee, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle, her estate in the Scottish Highlands.

As a mark of respect, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has ordered that flags be lowered to half-mast for three days. His Majesty the King extended his heartfelt condolences to His Majesty King Charles III, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Head of the Commonwealth, members of the Royal Family, and the people of Britain following the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.

His Majesty the King paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s exemplary reign and immeasurable contribution to the deepening and strengthening of relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom. He mourned her passing and emphasized that the world has lost a great source of inspiration and strength whose wisdom and humanity will be missed by all.

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, also sent a cable of condolences to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Head of the Commonwealth, following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

In the cable, His Royal Highness expressed his sincere condolences to His Majesty the King,

members of the Royal family, and the people of the United Kingdom. His Royal Highness commended Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s lifetime of selfless service to the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and their peoples. His Royal Highness noted Her Majesty the Queen’s defining contribution to fostering close and distinguished relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom and their peoples.

The first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, The Queen was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926. Educated at home with her younger sister Princess Margaret, she later went on to serve during World War II as a subaltern in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, where she reached the rank of Junior Commander. She assumed the responsibilities of the ruling monarch on February 6, 1952, when her father, King George VI, died. She was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953, in Westminster Abbey, at the age of 25. For the first time ever, the coronation ceremony was broadcast on television, allowing people from across the globe to witness the pomp and spectacle of the event. Some 27 million people in the United Kingdom (out of a total population of 36 million) watched the ceremony, and 11 million more listened on the radio.

Afterward, some 3 million people lined the route as the Queen and her entourage made their slow procession back to Buckingham Palace.

There were several key moments in Her Majesty the Queen’s reign. In 1965, she made a 10-day visit to the Federal Republic of Germany (or West Germany), the first official visit there by a British royal since 1913. Her visit marked the 20-year anniversary of the end of World War II, helping to symbolize the reconciliation between the two countries.

During a royal tour of Australia and New Zealand with Philip and Princess Anne in 1970, she bucked centuries of royal tradition when she took a casual stroll to greet crowds of people in person, rather than wave to them from a protected distance. The ‘walkabout’ is now considered a regular practice for British royals both abroad and at home.

In late 1984, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government agreed to return sovereignty over Hong Kong to China beginning July 1, 1997. In 1986, Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to visit the Chinese mainland following the return of Hong Kong’s sovereignty to China. She toured the terracotta warriors in Xi’an, the Great Wall in Beijing, and other sites.

In 2011, she visited the Republic of Ireland at the invitation of President Mary McAleese. Though she had frequently visited Northern Ireland over the course of her reign, this was her first to the Republic of Ireland, and the first by a British monarch in 100 years.

In February 2022, England began a series of Platinum Jubilee celebrations marking Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne. On June 2, a military parade featuring 1,400 troops in bearskin caps, musicians and 240 horses, a Royal Air Force flyover and an 82-gun salute were staged to honor the 96-year-old monarch.

The beloved Queen was also known for her kindness towards animals. For much of her life, she surrounded herself with dogs. She was especially known for her love of corgis, owning more than 30 descendants of the first corgi she received as a teenager, until the death of the final one, Willow, in 2018. Queen Elizabeth was also a horse enthusiast who bred thoroughbreds and attended racing events for many years.

As the longest-serving monarch in British history, she tried to make her reign more modern and sensitive to a changing public while maintaining traditions associated with the crown. Considered by many to have embodied the true spirit of Britain, she will forever be remembered for her dedication and commitment to her nation. 03

A New MILESTONE

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s official inauguration of Bahrain International Airport’s (BIA) new Passenger Terminal marks a new chapter for the Kingdom’s transportation sector, further strengthening its position as a leading financial, cultural, and aviation center in the region. His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi accompanied His Majesty the King as he ushered in a new era for the Kingdom’s civil aviation sector.

The new airport is four times larger than the legacy facility and is capable of processing 130,000 air traffic movements per annum and 4,700 bags per hour. It increases the airport’s capacity to 14 million passengers a year and is built to the highest technological standards, ensuring a safe, secure, and seamless airport experience.

The new terminal is at the heart of the ambitious Airport Modernization Program (AMP), which is a wider regeneration initiative of the whole airport ecosystem. Several other infrastructure elements were also redeveloped, including a jet fuel farm complex, a fire station, an Express Air Cargo Village, and the Awal Private Terminal, which caters to VIPs and business leaders. These projects demonstrate that airports are enablers of wider economic activities.

BAC Chairman, Eng. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed said: “We are proud that this important national development project was delivered by a Bahraini majority airport leadership team with the support of hundreds of young Bahrainis working in the aviation sector. Recruiting Bahraini professionals and developing their skills are pillars of BAC’s growth strategy.”

He added: “Operating the new terminal’s advanced equipment and IT systems requires extensive expertise, and the local workforce has been highly trained in Bahrain and abroad to work in these specialized disciplines. Having nationals in key operational roles demonstrates Bahrain’s advancements in aviation and the efficacy of the Tahleeq Program, a training and development initiative that equips participants with the skills needed by the AMP.”

BAC has transformed BIA into the most modern boutique airport in the Gulf. The terminal’s ergonomic design means passengers can pass through the Arrival and Departure areas more quickly than at any other airport in the region, giving them more time to enjoy the amenities on offer. The state-of-the-art airport leverages the latest technologies to enhance efficiency, improve security, and meet passengers’ growing expectations for a more seamless airport experience. Automation streamlines the most timeconsuming procedures, reducing waiting times and giving passengers more control over their journeys, while the building’s intuitive design and easy access to boarding gates make any trip a breeze.

BAC Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah added: “Launching Bahrain International Airport’s new Passenger Terminal in record time, with no sacrifices in terms of quality and design, is a national achievement. This enormous undertaking by our mainly Bahraini team was completed despite the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic. Everyone who worked on this project has the right to feel proud, as it is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Kingdom. Through the provision of world-class facilities, services and infrastructure, the new airport will sustain the growth of Bahrain’s aviation sector for decades to come.”

Sustainability is a major area of focus for BAC, with the new terminal being Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certificated, making it the largest green building in the Kingdom. It employs sustainability strategies that reduce energy and water use, improve waste management, and enhance indoor air quality. It also incorporates energy-efficient lighting, using LED strips to lower power consumption while maintaining the terminal’s aesthetic, with occupancy sensors that ensure lighting is only turned on when needed.

One of BAC’s most important goals is to deliver an improved travel experience. BAC Chief Development and Technical Officer, Abdulla Janahi, said: “Airports have grown to become much more than just waiting areas for the next flight. They serve as important shopping and dining destinations, which is why BIA has ensured a wider range of outlets and brands at the new terminal. With 3,300 sqm of Duty-Free space in the Departures Area, 541 sqm of Duty-Free space in the Arrivals Area, 21 cafes and restaurants, an airport clinic, and the Bahrain Airport Hotel & Spa, the airport caters to the needs of virtually all types of passengers.”

For many people, the airport is the first point of contact with a new country. BAC has made the Kingdom’s heritage a huge part of the airport experience, from the architecture to the art and cultural items on display at dedicated galleries. This allows passengers to experience the Kingdom without setting foot outside the airport.

Moreover, BIA’s Souq Al Qaisariya is a unique retail concept that encapsulates the spirit of Bahrain’s traditional souqs. It allows travelers to familiarize themselves with Bahraini culture and its components, from local food & beverages to traditional pottery, handicrafts, and products made from palm fronds, fabrics, and more.

BAC’s dedication to delivering exceptional results has been recognized with several prestigious international awards. BIA was named the World’s Best New Airport at the Skytrax 2022 World Airport Awards, which are regarded as the quality benchmark for the world airport industry. BIA also received a 5-star Skytrax rating, becoming only the third airport in the Middle East to win this accolade, and another 5-star rating for its COVID-19 safety precautions. THIS WILL BE THE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF BIAS. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SHOW TO BAHRAIN? AND WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT THIS YEAR?

The Bahrain International Airshow was established in line with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to promote the Kingdom’s aviation sector, which has a history of achievements that stretch back to 1957- the year that the first air navigation center was established. Today, it operates as the Air Traffic Control (ATC) center. BIAS could not have been made a reality without the valuable efforts of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, Chairman of BIAS Supreme Organizing Committee and Personal Representative of His Majesty the King. Thanks to his supervision over the last 10 years, the airshow has established itself as a leading event for aviation. The focus this year will be on the future of airports and airlines, as well as women in aviation. We expect more than 50,000 trade visitors and 215 military and civilian delegations to attend. We are constantly enhancing the show’s offerings through new additions. For example, the UK’s Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (Red Arrows) will be performing at BIAS for the first time this year. Audiences can expect a series of world-class performances by the Red Arrows, who will be deployed here following completion of their busy domestic season. In addition to their exhilarating air displays, they will conduct business seminars and sessions aimed at inspiring the youth by

highlighting the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO SEE BIAS RESUME FOLLOWING ITS CANCELLATION IN 2020?

We are thrilled to be bringing to the world the next instalment of the Bahrain International Airshow, held under the patronage of His Majesty the King, and organized with the Royal Bahraini Airforce, in association with Farnborough International. All necessary precautions have been taken to ensure that the event is held in a safe environment, allowing our exhibitors, visitors, partners, and sponsors to attend the show with confidence and explore opportunities to revive the aviation industry’s growth and sustainability. The last edition, held in 2018, saw more than 54,000 trade visitors, attendance by 11 of the top 15 global aerospace companies, and over $5 billion worth of aerospace orders and commitments confirmed. We look forward to building on that success and further cementing BIAS’s reputation as a key aviation event in the region and beyond.

These organizations join the likes of Bell Helicopter, Chevron, BAE Systems, Leonardo, Raytheon, IAI, Rafael, Elbit System, Saudi Aramco, Alpha Star, Emirates, ADPI & EVE, China Defence, USA Pavilion, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), L3 Harris, FAI Rent–a–Jet, UAE Civil Aviation, and General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) Saudi Arabia as exhibitors. Their participation promises to be a showcase of true innovation, as up to 130 civil and military aircraft will be on display, including flying vehicles, which we are very pleased to showcase at the show.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER EVENTS YOU ARE HOSTING THIS YEAR?

This year, we are hosting six forums aimed at attracting even more business-boosting visitors and encouraging them to stay longer in Bahrain. We have the Manama Air Power symposium, which will be hosted on 8th November, a day before the airshow starts. The event is organized by Bahrain Royal Air Forces, and Chiefs of Air Forces staff around the world have been invited. We also have the Arab Space Commission meeting, hosted by the National Space Science Agency (NSSA), a day before the show as well. 14 Arab countries are expected to participate. The Airport & Airlines Conference, organized by Bahrain Airport Company, will take place on day two of the airshow. CEOs of Middle East airlines and airports have been invited to attend. will be hosting the Women in Aviation forum. And finally, on day 3, we are hosting two more forums, one on space, and the other on local and international air cargo and logistics.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE AIRSHOW’S BIGGEST IMPACT ON THE ECONOMY AND ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO BAHRAIN OVER THE YEARS?

For more than ten years, BIAS has been a platform of business generation for the global leaders of aerospace in the gateway to the Gulf. It’s an event that connects the world’s aerospace industry in a prestigious environment, offering access to high-level delegations and opening new avenues of opportunities to businesses of all sizes.

Our show enjoys significant regional and international participation due to the added value it offers to companies, providing them access to the key decision

makers in the region in a boutique environment designed to facilitate business. Over the course of our 10 years, the cumulative value of deals signed was over USD15 billion by international companies like Boeing, Airbus, Bell, BAE systems, and Lockheed Martin. The direct contribution to the local economy was an average of USD60 million per show.

Perhaps one of the most important areas to us, apart from the business deals, is the participation of our local talent. The teams who help organize the event each show are key to its success.

refurbished chalets are located adjacent to the static aircraft park and parallel to the main runway, providing unrivalled views of both the static and flying display, but more importantly, allowing chalet tenants to exhibit their aircraft directly in front of their chalet. Furthermore, our forum program enables knowledge transfer and thought leadership amongst the industry’s top executives, adding a different element to the show.

While the focus of the show is business generation, we do provide the public with the opportunity to take part in all the excitement. BAHRAIN INTERNATIONAL AIRSHOW (BIAS) 2022

Bahrain readies to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS), taking place 9-11 November 2022, with a host of new features and programs. The Kingdom is committed to cementing itself as a collaborative peer within the global aerospace sector and has continued to advance its partnerships with globally established organizations. With a regional aviation industry that generates $130 billion annually for the economy, equivalent to 4.4% of the region’s gross domestic product (GDP), continued investment in the sector by all GCC members presents growing opportunities for global aviation players.

TELL US ABOUT THE LAUNCH OF JUMEIRAH GULF OF BAHRAIN RESORT AND SPA. WHAT SHOULD GUESTS EXPECT ONCE IT’S FULLY OPEN?

We are a first-in-kind resort in Bahrain. The guests’ experience starts before they even get here. On their way, they get to experience beautiful landscapes and uninterrupted sea views. We wanted to add another edge to travel in Bahrain by creating a destination where people have plenty of activities that make life enjoyable. We work together with a team to create great restaurant concepts. We have eight restaurants in the resort, and will have a massive spa with fantastic configurations, for both male and female guests. We also have a mixed-use gym with upcoming membership programs. On top of all of that, we will have a kids club, making the resort very family-friendly. With seven pools and uninterrupted ocean views, it has a lot to offer.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE RESORT PERFORMING IN BAHRAIN’S MARKET OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

We are committed to ensuring the success of the resort. There are lots of developments coming up in this part of Bahrain. There is huge demand for hotels, especially over the weekends. But it might not have a lot of variety and dimensions in terms of types of travel. This new destination will allow us to see different types of travelers come to Bahrain, ones who maybe find a bit more connection to the culture. I think we can open up a different market that caters to a different segment.

WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES THAT SET JUMEIRAH GULF OF BAHRAIN RESORT AND SPA APART FROM THE COMPETITION?

For me, quality is not necessarily opulence. For me, it’s craftsmanship. It’s understanding what people want to do when they come here. It requires emotional intelligence and forming a real connection with our guests. It’s a mindset that needs to be omnipresent in our team. And it means really doing our homework in terms of experiences and components that we introduce. For example, we spend a lot of time on training and selection of items. We regularly speak to our guests to find our what makes them happy. Quality is always going up in terms of expectations.

DOES THE RESORT FOLLOW OR IMPLEMENT GLOBAL HOSPITALITY TRENDS IN ITS OFFERINGS?

We don’t want to follow, we want to lead!

YOUR INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE INCLUDES THE MALDIVES, INDONESIA, AND CHINA. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE IN BAHRAIN SO FAR?

Bahrain has an embedded sense of hospitality in its culture. There is a lot of diversity in demographics, but it also has a genuine sense of welcoming. I’ve been welcomed to people’s homes, where they personally prepared things for me. I think hospitality is an important part of Bahrain’s identity. As an industry, I think there’s an opportunity to showcase that even more. We work with the Ministry of Labor to bring local expertise. It’s important to connect to the local environment and understand people’s actions and habits. I tremendously enjoy being exposed to new cultures and it has been an absolute pleasure for me to be in Bahrain.

ARE THERE ANY LONG-TERM PLANS FOR THE RESORT THAT YOU CAN SHARE WITH US?

For now, our focus is on delivering quality and putting our place on the map with unique experiences. In the long run, with the right level of focus, we can create even more experiences and unlock the ones that might not have been known to the wider public. We can really see the future of Bahrain come alive. I’d like it to be a place where people feel inspired. Where they can see it going to the next level and feel its energy.

WHY WAS CITY CENTER BAHRAIN CHOSEN AS THE LOCATION FOR THE NEW BRANCH?

We have been in City Center Bahrain since the beginning of 2009. Back then, our boutique was smaller. When the time came for us to refurbish with a new look, we thought it was best to move to the luxury area where all the other luxury watches are strategically located for a better customer experience. We are very happy with our move and have already received positive feedback from our customers and from others in the watch industry.

YAQUBY HAS HAD A CLOSE PARTNERSHIP WITH BREITLING FOR 40 YEARS. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE MAKES THIS PARTNERSHIP SO SUCCESSFUL?

Our partnership with Breitling has grown stronger over the years. We have seen the brand evolve year after year, building equity that allowed diving into many new categories. Over these four decades, we have always kept up with the global trends. Yaquby has been agile with change, as we have a great partnership and have always been

proactive with our localized campaigns - something that Breitling has always appreciated.

WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES THAT A BRAND MUST HAVE FOR IT TO BE PART OF THE YAQUBY FAMILY?

We’re a large group that works with consumer electronics under Yaquby distribution. I head that business, in addition to Yaquby Premium. We work with companies that have an excellent New Product Development team, the ones who seek innovations in line with current market trends. Good values and ethics are also vital for us. We are keen to work with organizations that have a clear carbon footprint and who are conscious of the environment. I would say Breitling is a great example of this. Ever since Mr. Georges Kern became the CEO, we have seen significant initiatives on climate change, including aligning Breitling with organizations like Ocean Conservancy.

HOW DOES YAQUBY STAND OUT AGAINST

THE COMPETITION? HAS IT BECOME FIERCER OVER TIME?

The luxury sector has changed significantly over the years. It moved from traditional media to more non-traditional marketing. I would say Breitling expertly utilized the social media boom, making luxury more inclusive and creating this new audience that we reach out to. The brand has grown phenomenally over the years. Competition will always be there, but it’s all about knowing which pockets to invest in and grow. The answer is yes, it is a battlefield in the luxury sector today, with everyone trying to have a share of this little pie. We thrive on brand experience from the moment you walk into the store. Competition is healthy in the watch segment. It’s all about brand equity, great customer experience, and fantastic marketing campaigns that drive sales. I firmly believe that having your fundamentals in place will give you a turnaround in performance, allowing you to win customers over other brands. Lastly, having a great team is always crucial and will help you win the competition.

ARE THERE ANY NEW PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE FROM YAQUBY?

Yes! We have a great lineup for 2023. We look forward to expanding the premium luxury sector. We are working on a few exciting projects to give customers a better in-store brand experience. We believe that the next two years will be the most exciting for us, as we are working on multiple projects in different sectors. That’s what I enjoy about this job the most. It’s the diversity in the categories I manage. I get to wear a different hat every day.

WHAT ARE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES FACING YAQUBY TODAY, AND HOW DOES IT PLAN TO OVERCOME THEM?

Since the pandemic, pressing issues like rising inflation, supply chain disruptions, changing consumer habits, and the online boom have been factors that impacted routine business. I always see these challenges as opportunities. Consumers can get information within seconds online, and this information can work both ways. It can work for you and against you. In the luxury sector, the grey market flow can affect pricing strategies, but this all boils down to consumers and their comfort zones on buying unauthenticated items. We believe a great customer journey in-store can help us retain customers and convert them into loyal repeat buyers. Another challenge is the supply chain cycle in the consumer electronics business, which has been affected by the increase in shipping costs and the effect on pricing. Value addition is the only way to grow the business. This can be achieved by offering excellent after-sales service and enhancing the customer’s journey online and offline. The Yaquby Group has a great heritage and has been around for 75 years. We have had many challenges over the years, but we are proud to say that we managed to grow our business year-on-year, opening up many new categories. We launched many global brands as well. And yes, we will have more challenges. It’s all about planning well ahead, having a go-to market strategy, and a robust contingency plan.

PIECES OF History

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BE A CARPET COLLECTOR? WAS THERE SOMEONE OR SOMETHING THAT INFLUENCED YOU?

The first influence is my Persian roots. Persian carpets are considered very valuable to us. My second influence has to be my father, who I used to join on his business trips back in the day. I used to attend his meetings with him. This is what attracted me to the idea of traveling and making deals. And finally, the third influence is that, when I was a child, I used to travel to Tehran to visit my grandmother. I remember having to air out her carpets. I used to ask her to take me with her to the bazaar. All of that somehow stayed in my subconscious over the years. So, this passion for carpets grew inside me since I was a child. When the time came for me to retire from my job, this love just came to the surface.

WHAT DOES BEING A COLLECTOR MEAN TO YOU? DO YOU ALSO SELL YOUR CARPETS?

I used to buy carpets just for my own satisfaction. I never thought of selling any of them. I once received an open cheque from a Kuwaiti businessman who asked me to write the number I wanted in exchange for a Seirafian carpet. I refused. After a while, one of my cousins insisted that she wanted to buy a carpet from me. The first thing I did was to call the carpet dealer and asked him if he had the exact same one she wanted. When he said yes, I bought it and sold that one to her. Ever since then, I thought: why not buy and sell carpets?

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR COLLECTION? WHAT MAKES THEM UNIQUE?

When I first started looking at carpets to buy, there were three things that caught my eye: the design, the color, and the knots. After a while, I started reading about them. I bought books and searched online. I traveled to 16 different cities in Iran. I discovered that there are brand names in the carpet world, much like in the art world, where you have a Monet, a Van Gogh, or a Picasso. I started looking for those names, the most famous ones mentioned in the books. You can see them on display in auctions and museums. Most of my carpets come with original certificates. That’s what makes them unique.

MANY OF YOUR EXQUISITE CARPETS WERE MADE IN IRAN. WHAT ABOUT IRANIAN CARPETS FASCINATE YOU?

If you study the history of carpets, you will find that the Pazyryk is the oldest carpet in the world. This Persian-type rug is over 2,000 years old and was discovered by a Russian man named Rudneck in 1949 at the frozen Altai Mountains in Siberia. It’s currently on display at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. I went all the way there just to see it! Persian people were the first to weave the carpet, that’s what makes them different. They know everything about carpets.

SOME OF YOUR CARPETS ARE TRULY HISTORIC. WHAT ARE THE OLDEST CARPETS IN YOUR COLLECTION? AND ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING BACKGROUND STORIES ABOUT THEM?

The oldest carpet I have currently is Kashan Souf, which is a blue carpet adorned by a crown at

the top. I bought it from Vienna, where there was a famous auction taking place there in 2012. It’s 110 years old, and yet it’s still in great condition. The colors are natural and original. I also have another carpet that used to belong to Mohammed Seirafian, who passed away last year at the age of 100 years. His carpet is 80 years old. It was done by the great painter Musawwir Al-Mulk, who was very famous in Isfahan.

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO PRESERVE THESE CARPETS? DO THEY REQUIRE SPECIAL MAINTENANCE?

I usually buy carpets that have natural colors. This makes me very confident that when I give it to the specialist for washing, nothing will happen to it. No damage whatsoever. Although, I do have certain rules for visitors who come to my house: they cannot enter with shoes on, and no animals are allowed!

BEING IN THE WORLD OF CARPET COLLECTORS FOR SO MANY YEARS, WHAT KIND OF INSIGHT DID THAT GIVE YOU? WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM BEING IN THAT UNIQUE WORLD?

It allowed me to meet different people at different places. I learned how to be passionate, and how to listen rather than talk. This allowed me to build a bridge of trust between me and the traders. It was a challenge to follow my passion, but I succeeded. It gave me a chance to prove to myself that I can do whatever a man can do. After all, this is an art, and it embraces everyone.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE QANNATI BRAND. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT?

Qannati is the first luxury brand dually anchored in France and Bahrain, specializing in one-of-kind, handcrafted, wearable and collectible art objects expertly handcrafted in France. Each is a masterpiece of rare aesthetics and superior craftmanship that marries ancient history and ancestral symbolism with the best of French savoir-faire in jewelry-making and miniature sculpture. Though handmade in France, Qannati Objet d’Art is firmly grounded in the traditions of ancient Mesopotamia, birthplace of 4,500 year-old civilizations.

TELL US ABOUT THE BEGINNINGS OF THE BRAND. HOW DID IT COME TO BE A REALITY?

It was 2018 and I was just blessed with my third child. It was a moment of reflection and realization. In a glance, I traveled through the past, present and future reflecting on my life and whether I have lived life to the fullest and whether I am leaving behind a legacy. I immediately thought about my passion for horology, art and history. It started as a passion project. I was long fascinated by the Epic of Gilgamesh, a tale that poets and historians alike consider to be the source of foundational heroic sagas like the Homeric epics. One day, strolling through the Mesopotamian collections of the Louvre Museum, I discovered on the sculpted figures of formidable kings, flower motifs carved into ornaments worn on both wrists. The symbol, known as the “Flower of Life,” was reserved for legendary kings of Mesopotamia and their “chosen”

ones, as an emblem of their divinity and power. I found great resemblance with my project and with what I was trying to accomplish. I realized that I am not inventing something new. I am bringing it back to life after more than 5000 years. That discovery sparked in me the desire to launch Qannati Objet d’Art and make it bigger than just a passion project. I felt the universe was guiding me through it and sending me signals along the way. My objective became to revive the ancient tradition of wearing symbolically powerful objects on both wrists by the chosen ones of our modern times. I am very proud that thousands of years later, I bring back these legendary objects through 2 types of masterpieces; Eternity Bracelets and Quantum Timepieces. A person may decide to wear them both, one on each wrist like the Mesopotamian Kings, or one at a time or even decide to gift one to a partner and celebrate a shared moment. To help me make my vision of unique wearable art objects a reality, I partnered with two of France’s most exceptional master craftsmen. The jewelry “conceptor” and designer Frédéric Mané, named Artistic Director of Qannati, and Jothi-Sèroj Ebroussard, a master jeweler and sculptor, have joined the team, bringing their impeccable “Métiers d’Art” sensibility to Qannati’s masterpieces. They both challenge the norm and bring a multiverse of facets in their work.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE THIRTEEN PIECES IN THE CELEBRATION OF TIME COLLECTION?

Four years in the making, Qannati’s Celebration of Time collection consists of 13 beautifully handcrafted objects designed to

be worn on the wrist. Under a sapphire glass dome, each piece features a unique, miniature “métier d’art” universe that uses a combination of precious stones and exotic materials to narrate, through miniature sculpted pieces, a chapter in the millenary journey of mankind. Each universe is designed to appeal to, and echo, what I call “the dreams and aspirations of the wearer.” Each, whether purely ornamental or functioning as a timepiece, is a masterpiece of craftsmanship that bridges the aesthetic divide between art, jewelry, and timepiece. This debut collection is comprised of 6 Eternity bracelets and 6 Quantum Timepieces, each complementing the other as they may be worn separately or together, one on each wrist like the ancient kings of Mesopotamia. The 13th piece will remain in Qannati’s private collection. In Qannati Objet d’Art, the focus is on the art of timekeeping rather than time-telling. Founder Mahmood Qannati reveals the details behind the luxury brand’s creation and its incredible Celebration of Time collection.

This collection was born out of my dream to create masterfully crafted ornaments that fill a unique niche in the global luxury market. Each masterpiece in Celebration of Time represents a chapter in the history of mankind, from the dawn of time immemorial, to the first spark of life on earth, and the possibilities that the future that holds ahead. Therefore, we took all the time needed to create this. There was no compromise in anything we did. There is a story to be told behind the brand and each of its masterpieces. So the process took a long time. We kept track of every day in the process. On average, each piece took more than 800 days to complete, from its ideation, sketch, design, technical mapping, gemstone sourcing and handcraftsmanship. In the field of high jewelry, brands find rare gemstones and then they create masterpieces around these gemstones. We do the complete opposite. We design the masterpiece and then search the world to find the right gemstone or material, whatever it is and wherever it is. This collection is comprised of original handmade objects that will stand out in the eyes of an elite international clientele who appreciates the superlative craftsmanship of timeless ornaments, meticulously crafted and always one-of-a-kind. We believe in exclusivity, which is why each masterpiece is unique, because each life experience is unique.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE SETS QANNATI APART FROM THE COMPETITION?

In March 2019, I was on my way to meet Frederic Mane and Jothi Seroj for the first time to kickstart the work on the new collection. Prior

to that meeting, I stopped by Basel World (the last one before its death!). Again, it was very overwhelming at first. I wondered how I was supposed to compete against all these legendary giants. But soon I realized how advantaged Qannati is. As much as I love this industry, I do not agree with its norms and principles. I do not think its players have adopted to the modern times. So, what makes Qannati unique? First, we are in the B2B business. By B2B, I do not mean business-to-business, I mean brand-tobrand. For us, every person is a brand and must be treated as a brand. I cannot sell the same product to 2 different people. Each person is different. Research shows that personalization is the future of everything. Moreover, Qannati is serving a growing niche. Luxury / jewelry for men. Men’s desire for jewelry is growing, that is why we see the sales of unisex jewelry is on the rise. It is because men are buying more, and they do not have enough choices to choose from. Also, men are very sentimental with their jewelry. They also prefer their wrists as a real estate to show who they truly are. Second, our attention to details is something we are very proud of. Our craftsmanship is breath-taking. From Frederic’s ability to transform a client’s life story into a piece of art, the search for the right gemstones and exotic materials, to Jothi’s delicate craftsmanship. You end up having your personal museum on your wrist. In Qannati, there is no judgment as to what a customer wants. It is much more than just the bling. It’s the story the customer wants to tell and leave behind. Qannati brings a deep philosophy with its brand. It is more than just a seller of bracelets and watches. The brand brings back ancient knowledge. The ancient ones believed in the power of spirituality vs the tangible world. They were guided by symbols, numbers, and patterns. They believed that the Flower of Life is the mesh of the universe, its sacred geometry is the pattern of the universe and mathematics is the language of the universe. Qannati is inspired by all of that. We take the ancient knowledge seriously and embed it in everything we do. Our design guideline follows the platonic solids of the Flower of Life. The number of pieces (13) follows the number of circles in the flower of life. The number of themes (7) follows the number of circles in the circle of life. Nothing is a coincidence. There is a reason and a story behind everything in Qannati. This attention to details is unparalleled in the industry and it comes organically for us in Qannati. It is not hard to work along the same wave lengths of the universe.

WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP FOR QANNATI?

We haven’t even started. Many people thought that “Avengers End Game” was the end of that story. Soon we realized that they just started because there are multiple universes. Qannati Objet d’Art is kind of the same. We have a sacred pattern, that is dear to us, called the Qannati Spectrum.

It is inspired by the Flower of Life. In this pattern, you see Qannati’s multi-universes; past and future, matter and consciousness, reality and fiction. There are endless possibilities to what Qannati can produce. Currently we are in the process of touring through the GCC with exclusive viewings with local partners. In the meantime, we have started working on our second collection, in which we will push the boundary of our storytelling and craftsmanship to new heights. We also have a plan for our 13th piece “Alpha”. This piece belongs to the universe and cannot be owned. Therefore, we have a charitable cause in mind where this piece can help us give back to the world. You cannot take without giving back, especially when you follow the patterns of the universe. Our Alpha is our most precious piece. This is exactly why we chose it for this reason. Always give your best to others.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE BEGINNINGS OF PRJKT8. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT? WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME?

I’ve worked in the banking sector for over ten years. I’ve always had a passion for watches and dreamt of a time when I’d have my own boutique, where I could welcome enthusiasts like myself and talk watches. Eventually, I grew tired of the monotony of the nine-to-five grind, working within the DIFC district in Dubai. When I did take the plunge, I started by distributing SEVENFRIDAY to most of the GCC countries in 2013 as a part-time project, until I returned home to Bahrain in 2016. That’s when I opened PRJKT8 in Moda Mall. Since then, as my interest and knowledge of horology grew, so did the number of brands we carry. We added many brands from all price points that would appeal to every type of collector. PRJKT8 started with a passion for watch collecting. That is the core of our DNA. Our goal has always been to discover the latest contributions from the watch industry and inspire the current and next generation of watch collectors. The reason for the name is simple. It initially started as a passion project. We used the German spelling as a homage to the brand from Zurich, the one that started it all, and the number of years that it took to realize the dream: eight.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE BRANDS AND MODELS THAT PRJKT8 CARRIES?

There’s a delicate balance between being a watch enthusiast and a small business. Curating a group of brands and products that cater to the region’s needs and wants is not an easy feat. That said, deciding on what brands we had to carry was

not at all problematic. It was clear that we wanted to work with brands that thought the same way we did. Brands that wanted to break from the norm and create pieces that spoke to a new generation of collectors, working with the mavericks of the watch world. Brands like MB&F, H. Moser & Cie, Laurent Ferrier, Romain Gauthier, URWERK, Grönefeld, Ressence, Hautlence, Czapek, and Armin Strom just to name a few.

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A WATCH BRAND FOR IT TO COME UNDER THE PRJKT8 FOLD?

Divergence. All the brands under our roster manage to, in one way or another, completely differentiate themselves from their mainstream counterpart. Whether in terms of mechanical and technical innovations, design aesthetic, quality of finish, or value. In the case of some brands, they manage to tick all of these boxes and then some.

WHAT MAKES PRJKT8 DIFFERENT FROM YOUR USUAL WATCH BOUTIQUE?

Our main goal is to democratize the knowledge and hobby of collecting and owning watches in an industry that has been historically inaccessible and secretive. We listen to and cater for our client’s needs, no matter the budget. It may be by finding them the right watch or customizing a piece they already own with our wide array of straps.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE RESPONSE TO PRJKT8 SO FAR?

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. From our beginnings to this day, we have had visits from well-known watch collectors, prominent watchmakers from the industry, central figures, and

brand owners, all expressing a fascination with our boutique’s concept. This has allowed us to grow and foster friendships over the years, giving us the opportunity and privilege to collaborate and create editions that are unique to PRJKT8.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST BOUTIQUE EDITION?

Yes! We were excited to work on a collaborative piece with Mr. Ferrier, which we will be launching this month to celebrate 5 years of partnership with his brand. Based on the Classic Origin Model and limited to 8 pieces, we’ve requested a finish on the dial that requires a unique sand-blasting technique. This is where the edition gets its name: “Classic Origin Sablé Autumn.” It makes it very special as this has never been done before on the dial of a Laurent Ferrier. We hope it will appeal to collectors and enthusiasts alike.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED WHEN IT COMES TO PRJKT8?

Challenges are part and parcel of every business, whether small or large. I think you’d agree with me when I say the past couple of years were a big challenge for the whole world. But knowing when to pivot and having great partners who can support can ease challenges.

ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING BRANDS OR MODELS SOON TO BE ADDED TO PRJKT8?

As part of our vision of bringing watches to a wider audience, we’ve recently launched a satellite brand under PRJKT8 dubbed 8 Degrees. This fun and cool sister brand is geared towards a younger demographic, carrying products that have a more accessible price bracket. We wanted to take this brand further, so we expanded its product portfolio to include mechanical art pieces for the home or office and jewellery for women, as well as unique and fun fashion accessories you wouldn’t find anywhere else in Bahrain.

WE’VE NOTICED THAT YOUR BOUTIQUE IS CURRENTLY UNDER RENOVATION. ARE THERE ANY PLANS TO EXPAND?

Yes! We’re creating a larger space for our clients to explore our unique portfolio, as well as creating a space for our sister brand, 8 Degrees. In the meantime, we have moved to a temporary location within Moda Mall, not far from the current boutique.

BAHRAIN WILL HOST ASIAN WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MANAMA 2022 FROM OCTOBER 6-16. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT IT?

It is hugely significant for both the Bahrain Weightlifting Federation (BWF) and the Kingdom in general. It is the first time Bahrain has hosted a weightlifting competition of this magnitude and will consolidate the Kingdom’s standing as a destination for major regional and international sporting championships. In the hierarchy of weightlifting world, the format is Olympics, World Championships, and Continental Championships. Asia regularly dominates the Continental Championships and many of the world’s leading weightlifters come from there.

WHY WAS BAHRAIN CHOSEN TO HOST THIS EVENT?

Honestly, it was a combination of courage, ability, and luck. The Asian Games, which feature a weightlifting event, was initially planned to be held in China but the COVID outbreak meant they had to pull out. The Philippines was next in line, but they also had to pull out because of the pandemic. It is very difficult to organize an event like this while navigating the challenges of COVID. I saw this as a golden opportunity for Bahrain and

presented our bid to the AWF Executive Board in July in Uzbekistan. Fortunately, Bahrain’s exemplary response to managing the pandemic helped us to make our case and we got the approval, just three months before the event was due to be held. This is a huge challenge as most countries make their case at least a year in advance. With lots of proactive planning, hard work, and Bahraini resilience, we are on track to deliver an outstanding event.

HOW ARE PREPARATIONS FOR THE EVENT GOING?

Things are going really well. We recently hosted the president of the International Weightlifting Federation on a tour of Bahrain to show him the sights, the training hall, and the hotel accommodation for the athletes. He also met with many of Bahrain’s top officials, who are very supportive of this event. Our vision for Manama 2022 is to put on a world-class event that shines a spotlight on the Kingdom as a leading destination for sports tourism. The Bahrain Conference Center is an ideal venue as it is the right size to fill with spectators and conveniently located in Manama.

WHAT CAN SPECTATORS EXPECT FROM THIS EVENT?

Weightlifting has been an Olympic sport since

the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and continues to surge in popularity globally. Fans can expect an incredible show and world-class talent as we have 10 Olympic medalists competing alongside World Champions and Asian Champions. The show is open to everyone who loves sport, and you don’t necessarily have to be a fan of weightlifting to appreciate the athleticism of the competitors.

WHICH BAHRAINI ATHLETES WILL PARTICIPATE IN MANAMA 2022?

Hussein Ali Saif, who won the first Asian Youth and Junior Bronze medal, will participate at the event alongside Zainab Yahya, Eman Shakib, and several others. We hope the event and the strong local participation will encourage more Bahrainis to take up the sport of weightlifting.

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT BAHRAIN’S OLYMPIC PUSH FOR WEIGHTLIFTING?

Manama 2022 is a great opportunity for our Bahraini athletes to compete on the biggest stage in Asia, which will hopefully prepare them for the 2024 Olympic qualifiers in December this year. We are confident our local talent will perform well at the event, paving the way for many future successes for our Kingdom.

The BWF was established in 1974, but evolved over the years to become the Bahrain Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Federation. The old logo was a combination of the two sports. Shortly before I joined the BWF as Vice President in 2020, a decision was made to separate the two sports again, meaning we needed to rebrand. However, because we were so busy with competitions, we kept delaying it. I became BWF president in March this year and was keen to see the project through. When we found out the Kingdom of Bahrain was chosen to host Asian Weightlifting Championships –Manama 2022, it was an ideal opportunity to launch our new brand and logo. Although the new logo pays tribute to our history, we have modernized it to make it more reflective of what we do following the split. It features weight disks that are similar to elements found in the International Weightlifting Federation and Asian Weightlifting logos, which reflects our vision to compete on a global stage.

YOU HAVE ONLY BEEN BWF PRESIDENT FOR A SHORT TIME. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PROGRESS YOU HAVE MADE SO FAR?

I feel proud of everything the BWF has achieved recently, and this motivates me to do more in the future. We have invested in new Olympic-level equipment for Manama 2022 and when the event is over, we are going to use it to enhance the

BWF’s current facilities. Hopefully, this will help our members to reach greater heights.

It helps to come from a sporting background because you know what the athletes want and how they think. At the same time, being passionate about this sport in particular motivates me to achieve the best results for our members. Organizing Manama 2022 requires very long days and a lot of effort, but it doesn’t feel like work because I enjoy what I do and can’t wait to see the results.

CREATING History

YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH EXHIBITIONS IN BAHRAIN GOES BACK DECADES. WHAT IS THE FIRST EVER EXHIBITION THAT YOU HELPED CREATE?

My very first exhibition in Bahrain was the Middle East Medicare 1989, which was held at the Salmaniya Medical College. It was a small exhibition with a high-level scientific conference utilizing the lecture theater there. In my role as Director of Sales & Marketing at Arabian Exhibition Management, I organized a couple of oil shows that same year, which were held at the Central Market space.

BEFORE THE NEW BAHRAIN INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION AND CONVENTION CENTER WAS LAUNCHED IN SAKHIR RECENTLY, THERE WERE MANY EVENTS HELD IN BAHRAIN AT THE OLD EXHIBITION HALL. DO YOU HAVE ANY FOND MEMORIES OF EVENTS FROM THAT TIME?

We used to initially run exhibitions in the Central Market and before that in red and white structures next to the solar powered petrol station on Exhibition Road. A little-known fact: this is how the road was named. Looking back, one wonders how we managed to run shows there, particularly the food show MEFEX. I noticed that exhibitors were choosing unusual locations. If it rained, the roof leaked and would flood the stands immediately beneath! The fish market was the building next to the sewage drainage system. So, fish heads and bones would rise through the floor drainage grills.

Despite all of this, the shows worked really well! In 1992, the Exhibition Center was ready in Sanabis and we held the ‘Rebuild Kuwait’ exhibition to mark its official opening.

YOU ARE PART OF THE TEAM CREDITED WITH COMING UP WITH THE CONCEPT OF JEWELLERY ARABIA. CAN YOU TELL US HOW THAT IDEA CAME ABOUT? AND HOW DID JEWELLERY ARABIA BECOME A REALITY?

My friend and colleague Stephen Key came to Bahrain in 1989 as Arabian Exhibition Management CEO. He noticed that there were large areas of the souq and shopping centers devoted to jewellery and watches. We discussed this and wondered why there was no show to cover this important industry. Our international research clearly demonstrated a demand for such an event. That’s when we had a light bulb moment of hosting a jewellery and watches exhibition. But there were a lot of technical barriers to staging such an event. Luckily, the late Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister at the time, swept away all the red tape difficulties and the rest was history. Jewellery Arabia was born, with our first show debuting in 1992. As the show now moves to the new center in Sakhir, it has grown into the largest and most prestigious show of its kind in the Middle East.

THROUGHOUT YOUR YEARS IN EVENT

ORGANIZATION, WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES STANDING IN YOUR WAY?

One of the biggest challenges in my career was staging Rebuild Kuwait in Bahrain in November 1992. In a couple of months or so, we had to sell an international show which was double the size of the Bahrain International Exhibition Center, all by using the same structures that were used on Exhibition Road. We had been liaising with the Kuwaiti government, which had been operating from Taif. Kuwait didn’t actually need much rebuilding, but the show was a great success for a regional event that came after a period of war and exhibition inactivity.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE BAHRAIN’S BIGGEST ADVANTAGES WHEN IT COMES TO ATTRACTING INTERNATIONAL VISITORS TO ITS EVENTS? HOW DO YOU SEE BAHRAIN’S EXHIBITION INDUSTRY PERFORMING OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

Bahrain’s physical location, being at the center of the Gulf and next door to the biggest market in the region, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, makes it ideal for trade shows and conferences. It is such a friendly and hospitable place that people from all over the world just love to visit and enjoy its charm. Bahrain now has a huge state-of-the-art venue with great parking and transportation access – no more traffic jams in Sanabis! It’s now the best in the region. With some strategic planning, the sky is the limit.

The Anatomyof Beauty ®

Vacheron Constantin introduced this year a new feminine timepiece in its Traditionnelle collection, a line imbued with the grand Geneva watchmaking heritage and whose design was intended to adapt to all types of watches, whether simple or equipped with sophisticated complications. The Traditionnelle perpetual calendar ultra-thin watch corresponds to women’s desire for mechanical complication timepieces.

This timepiece equipped with in-house Caliber 1120 QP elegantly plays on the distinctive aspects of the Gregorian calendar. It displays the days, dates, months and years on a four-year cycle, including a leap-year indication, without any need for correction before 2100. This calendar display is complemented by a moon-phase indication at 6 o’clock. Another distinctive feature of this movement is its thinness: measuring only 4.05 mm thick, it is housed in a 8.43 mm-thick case with a 36.5 mm diameter, ensuring perfect visual harmony.

Caliber 1120 QP reflects the Maison’s expertise in ultra-thin movements that has enabled it to set several records in terms of slimness since the 1950s. With its 276 components perfectly visible through the sapphire caseback, it also reflects noble watchmaking traditions through its extremely meticulous finishing: a circular-grained plate on the dial side, mainplate and bridges adorned with a

Côtes de Genève motif on the back, hand-beveling, circular satin-finished holes and a going train with polished teeth. The oscillating weight featuring a 22K gold segment is also adorned with a Côtes de Genève motif and openworked in the shape of the Maison’s Maltese cross emblem.

This watch whose aesthetic refinement echoes its technical sophistication pays tribute to the identity codes of Vacheron Constantin, whereby the quest for excellence is expressed through the smallest, even invisible details. Available in 18K white gold and 18K 5N pink gold versions, it is inspired by Vacheron Constantin models from the first half of the last century. It features the strong sense of understatement characterising the collection, embellished with a few special features such as the stepped lugs and case, fluted caseback, as well as Dauphine-type hands flying over a railway minutes track punctuated by baton-type hour-markers. In keeping with the methodical spirit of the time, which held that function should dictate form, this perpetual calendar has been specially designed to make it easy to read the calendar indications thanks to a slimmeddown bezel offering a larger dial opening.

The dial is adorned with blue-grey tinted mother-of-pearl for the white gold model and white mother-of-pearl for the pink gold model. The moon-phase disc bears the same colors as

the dial, while the depiction of the moon and the stars adopts the same shade of gold as the case, complete with an opaline finish. In a final touch of elegance, the bezel and top of the lugs are delicately set with 76 round-cut diamonds, while the crown is adorned with a round-cut diamond.

For the first time in the collection, this Traditionnelle perpetual calendar ultra-thin watch is equipped with an interchangeable strap that can be fitted at the touch of a push-button and without any need for tools. Each model comes with an alligator leather strap - grey blue or rosy beigesecured by a white or pink gold pin buckle set with 17 round-cut diamonds.

The Patrimony self-winding watch symbolizes minimalist art expressed through horological refinement. Inspired by a historical 1957 Vacheron Constantin with a classic round, ultra-thin style and timeless elegance, the Patrimony collection has been distinguished since its launch in 2004 by a restrained and refined watchmaking aesthetic. In keeping with the line’s signature spirit of purity, the proportions of the new Patrimony models have been revisited. The curve of the 36.5 mm-diameter case in 18K white gold or 18K 5N pink gold has been redesigned, while the crown has been subtly rounded.

These colors appear in a gradient-effect composition that is lighter in the center and progressively darker towards the edge of the dial, thereby bringing light and depth to the display of the hours, minutes and seconds. The care lavished on each detail is reflected in the date disc at 6 o’clock, which has the same colour as the dial, and in the subtle play of gemsetting on the models. Each of the two versions features either a bezel set with 72 round-cut diamonds lighting up the circular-grained minutes track, or a minutes track itself composed of 48 round-cut diamonds positioned between the applied gold hour-markers. The Magic of Inked Time

Two scratch-resistant materials which nevertheless bear the indelible mark of the famous tattoo artist. 450 tattoos to wear on the wrist in 3 limited editions. The artistic collaboration between Hublot & Maxime Plescia-Buchi dates back to 2016. The watches are infused with tattoo art. Dozens of pieces engraved with the indelible mark of the talented “grapho-typo-tattoo” genius. For the new trio, Hublot opted for the strongest materials in a further tour de force featuring scratch-resistant substrates deeply engraved in an

In a 45 mm diameter case made from Magic Gold or Ceramic, the master tattoo artist’s designs alternate and are superimposed on the case and bezel, with the mechanism-/disc-hands taking the form of a geometric tattoo that extends to the rubber strap. This geometry reveals that of the HUB1240 manufacture self-winding Unico chronograph movement, which is visible beneath a skeleton dial and a transparent case back. 100 pieces for the Magic Gold version, 250 for the Black Magic in full black ceramic and 200 for the Green Ceramic.

MAGIC GOLD - Scratch-resistant gold did not exist until Hublot invented Magic Gold. Unique, developed and patented by the watch Manufacture, it is the first and only scratch-resistant 18-karat gold alloy in the world. With a hardness of almost 1000 Vickers, it is notoriously difficult to machine. An Unrivaled ACHIEVEMENT

The astronaut was the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 11 when it touched down on the Sea of Tranquility exactly 53 years ago. One of the most enigmatic characters in the Star Wars galaxy has inspired Kross Studio’s latest creation, in collaboration with Lucasfilm. The Swiss design studio is proud to reveal a new and limited edition of ten Boba Fett-inspired collector sets, each complete with a numbered, manual wound Boba Fett-inspired central Tourbillon timepiece and a watch display by EFX, inspired by Boba Fett’s famed starship.

The central tourbillon is now indelibly associated with Kross Studio. Here, the mechanical complication is showcased within a 45mm grade 5 titanium case, coated with chocolate PVD. Kross Studio engineers reached another level by undertaking the challenge of manufacturing a miniature starship on its landing platform at the top of the tourbillon’s cage.

Composed of eight pieces, each miniature tourbillon resembling Boba Fett’s firespray starship has been produced at Kross Studio and manufactured in CNC machines. Each piece has been meticulously engraved and hand painted to mimic the weathered appearance of Boba Fett’s ship as it appears in Bespin™ at Cloud City in the Star Wars film saga. The level of detail is incredible, and it highlights the unique savoir-faire perpetuated by artisans in Switzerland. It took 90 hours to make each of the ten pieces that are based on the starship and each one is a unique piece.

Kross Studio has employed a unique peripheral format for reading the hours and minutes through a planetary gear system that orbits 360 degrees around the tourbillon. A 12-factor gear ratio allows the planetary minutes system to empower the progression of the hours. In order to optimize the

movement’s efficiency as much as possible, the hour and minute display system is fixed on two very wide and high-precision ball bearings. The hour hand is inspired by Boba Fett’s jetpack and the minute hand by its rocket, two iconic items that the bounty hunter carries permanently.

The clarity and symmetry of the Boba Fettinspired Tourbillon dial belies the complexity of its manual-wound central tourbillon movement, which is composed of 220 parts. Each of the ten numbered timepieces was designed and assembled within the Kross Studio atelier in Gland, Switzerland.

No visible crown impedes the case’s perfect symmetry thanks to Kross Studio’s ingenious D-ring crown system, placed instead on the case back. The barrel’s mainspring is wound by lifting the D-ring on the case back, which is turned like a key, offering a more intuitive and more efficient user experience than a traditional crown. The timepiece offers a maximum power reserve of five days. Time-setting is just as simple, completed by pressing the “Time Set” push button at 3 o’clock while simultaneously turning the case back D-ring in either direction.

Cleverly hidden quick-release strap buttons on the underside of the case also help preserve the timepiece’s clean lines, a handy feature which allows quick strap changes from the included green polyamide strap embossed with the pattern of Boba Fett’s chest armor to either of the other included straps: the chocolate color calf leather strap and the black rubber strap. To optimize durability and comfort, each included strap has been reinforced with black rubber inlay.

The Sweetest ART FORM

HOW DID YOU SET ON THE PATH OF BEING AN ARTIST? WAS IT A PASSION THAT YOU FOLLOWED SINCE CHILDHOOD OR DID IT COME UNEXPECTEDLY?

I would say it’s a bit of both. I never thought of myself becoming an artist when I was younger, however, I felt this desire to create and express myself from an early age. It was later in life, when I became pregnant and found myself spending most of my time at home instead of work, that I really started to create as an artist. Soon enough, I had sculptures everywhere. My first exhibitions were quite successful, so I decided to exhibit in different places to share my artworks with the public.

SWEETS PREDOMINATE YOUR WORKS. DOES EACH PIECE TELL AN INDIVIDUAL MESSAGE OR IS IT ALL PART OF ONE CONNECTED THEME?

Sweets are the main subjects of my works. Each piece is unique, particularly those in plexiglass and marble. The technique is different for polyester and bronze, as a mold is needed to make 8+4 editions. All my sculptures look like candies, of course, but each piece is unique with a different twist depending on from which angle you are looking at the sculpture. You will find in each piece something different. Sometimes you will see

a face, a smile, or something else. But overall, the candies sculptures are a reminder of childhood and nice moments people share together. Seeing them magnified by the hand of the artist in such monumental art pieces make people happy and bring back old memories to them. Over the years, I declined my emblematic Wrapping on collections such as ADN, Robots, or Butterflies. The objective was to extrapolate the twisting gesture to other forms and materials in order to denounce social issues such as the environment, society, and animal causes.

YOUR ART PIECES ARE ON DISPLAY AROUND THE WORLD. IS THERE ONE PIECE OR VENUE THAT YOU ARE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF? ONE THAT STANDS OUT THE MOST?

This is a hard question to answer because I am proud of all the art pieces that I have created. But, if I had to choose one, I would say the 2011 G20 Summit in Cannes, which was a great event with hundreds of monumental sculptures on the famous Croisette and inside the Palais des Festivals. This was an incredible exhibition with amazing international visibility. In 2009, I was working on a big project with the city of Cannes. A 6-month street exhibition of 100 monumental sculptures to be displayed across the city. At that time, neither

the Mayor of Cannes, nor myself, knew that the G20 Summit would be held in Cannes. When I learned the news, I had to completely reorganize my project. It was an incredible experience, and I was very lucky to be part of it. I remember having over 40 interviews with journalists and media from around the world!

WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PIECE YOU EVER WORKED ON? DOES IT GET EASIER OR MORE CHALLENGING WITH EACH ONE?

The most challenging piece I ever worked on is probably the “Battered Women”. I am very concerned with the cause of battered women around the world, so it particularly resonates with me. The candy is the symbol of sweetness and innocence, and the challenge was to translate the subject of violence towards women into the artwork. This art piece is part of the evolution of my work on candy sculptures. This piece is very strong and powerful. It illustrates a woman twisting her body to protect herself to avoid fights. I already used in the past the ‘wrapping twist’ for lost animals and made the trashcan wrapping twister. All these topics express ideas about consumers, society, the environment, and animals. The sculpture was offered to the Women’s Foundation in Paris.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR THE NEXT PIECE? DO YOU TAKE FROM YOUR SURROUNDINGS OR DRAW FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCES IN THE PAST?

I find inspiration everywhere, at any time. It could be when I’m walking in the street, traveling, reading a magazine, watching TV, or just admiring a scene. Every little thing can inspire me. I also watch other artists and visit museums. It’s a process. I write the story of my artwork. It’s like an adventure in a book that I write every day. I have learnt from my mistakes. Even if something I created is not quite what I wanted to express, it may lead to new ways of creation.

WHAT MADE YOU PICK PLEXIGLASS AS YOUR MATERIAL OF CHOICE? AND ARE THERE OTHER MATERIALS THAT YOU PREFER TO WORK WITH?

I chose plexiglass in the first place because I love the rendering of this colorful and shiny material. It goes back 25 years ago, when I was covering my artworks with plexiglass. At that time, I was creating real candies and the sugar was melting and mixing. I mixed candies with resin, and I protected my works with transparent plexiglass. I ended up having a lot of residues in my studio and instead of throwing them away, I decided to recycle them to create an art piece, without thinking first of creating a candy sculpture. I just let my inspiration do the job. I melted the plexiglass residues and decided to make a twist on both sides and ended up with a candy! Plexiglas is really my favorite material, but I also work on noble materials such as marble and bronze.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH OUR READERS WHEN AND WHERE YOUR NEXT PIECE WILL BE? AND ARE THERE UPCOMING PROJECTS OR EXHIBITIONS THEY CAN LOOK FORWARD TO?

There are many events or exhibitions that will take place this year. In early 2022, I opened my studio gallery in Monaco (29 Boulevard Rainier III) where a permanent exhibition is displayed. From June to September 2022, I will exhibit in the beautiful city of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, in the French Riviera, monumental candy sculptures. The exhibition was imagined as a promenade where visitors will discover the sculptures around the city. For example, a 5-meter-high yellow candy sculpture will be displayed in the harbor as well as bronze, marble, and colorful polyester candy sculptures.

All my sculptures look like candies, of course, but each piece is unique with a different twist depending on from which angle you are looking at the sculpture. ”

For the 2022 Artisanal Collection, Maison Margiela stages Cinema Inferno at the Palais de Chaillot, an assemblage performance piece conceived in symbiosis with the haute couture collection. Identifying a post-digital desire for physicality, Creative Director John Galliano crafts a multi-disciplinary format: a theatre played out in front of live spectators, captured by cameras that integrate with the performance in a film simultaneously broadcast to a digital audience. The narrative was created by John Galliano and brought to life in collaboration with the British theatre company Imitating the Dog. Told through the grammar of haute couture, Cinema Inferno explores representations of the patriarchal abuse of power - parental, legal, educational, religious, medicalin fabric and cutting techniques developed in the Artisanal atelier.

Living History

On the 12th February 1947, Christian Dior presented his debut collection, and its New Look changed fashion forever. This season, and in the 75th anniversary year for the House, Kim Jones engages in the ultimate conversation and association – with that of Christian Dior himself. Here, the two men’s histories intertwine: from the gradation of greys and pastels to the meeting of British masculine tailoring with that of the haute couture French tailleur in the new, rough hewn, men’s Bar silhouette. Signs and symbols personal to Mr Dior proliferate throughout the collection: the star, the rose, the cannage, the leopard, the Lily of the valley and the chain all link the past to the present day, particularly through the jewellery. Here, Victoire de Castellane’s diamond and emerald chain bracelet is joined by Yoon Ahn’s extravagances in a new decorative approach for men.

In first grade, I was in a class full of 30 students. I was 8 years old when my teacher said, “Paint what you desire, your dreams”. So, I made a painting. It was so appreciated and applauded by the teacher and the rest of the class, that I began to understand what I did was special. That’s when I discovered I had a true passion for painting.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ART STYLE?

I create artistic works that question our very existence, art that cannot be considered separate from life itself. These works represent the phenomena of facing tradition with modernity, and the meeting between artists and their artworks. Every generation requires us to reflect upon interwoven images of popular culture as if these images would be recreated on canvas. I’m on a journey to create and to exist. By being aware of this era, I give distinctive shape to my artistic style. I create something that never existed before. It would be more accurate to call it changing form, rather than creating it. I give it authenticity by blending and filtering for a successful hybrid.

YOUR ART SOMETIMES DEALS WITH METAMORPHOSIS. WHAT PIQUES YOUR INTEREST IN THAT TOPIC?

One of the things that attracted me to the concept of metamorphosis or transformation is Sığmazam, an immortal work of art written 630 years ago by Nesîmî. It was ahead of its time and remains influential to this day. There’s also Franz Kafka’s description of self-estrangement by using the example of transforming into an insect in his work, The Metamorphosis. In addition to these influences, I found the meaning of looking beyond myself in Mevlana’s words: “What you are seeking for, is in you. There is a life inside your life, seek that life! There is a jewel inside the mountain that lies inside your body, seek that jewel. If you seek for the Sufi who walked away, seek for him in yourself, rather than outside.” We are used to seeking what belongs to us on the outside, choosing to label ‘strange’ what is really us. In reality, the truth is us, and we are the truth. To quote Mevlana once again: “I was once a stone and then I became earth, plant, and Adam. I will eventually be the light.”

WAS THERE A PIVOTAL MOMENT THAT AFFIRMED YOUR CAREER AS AN ARTIST? AN AWARD OR PARTICULAR ACHIEVEMENT THAT STILL FILLS YOU WITH PRIDE?

I completed four university programs in total: one bachelor’s degree, two master’s, and one doctorate. I also have a second master’s from Sevilla, but what always fills me with pride Is being chosen as RH+ Art Magazine’s Young Artist of the Year.

YOU’VE PARTICIPATED IN MANY EXHIBITIONS AROUND THE WORLD. WHICH OF THESE EXPERIENCES STAND OUT THE MOST TO YOU? ANY PARTICULARLY FOND MEMORIES?

It’s always exciting for me to see my works displayed in many important art venues around the world. So far, I have exhibited in Miami, Londra, Dubai, Istanbul, and Tiran. The best part is that I still have the chance to enjoy many more amazing experiences. I’m making my dream come true, traveling around the world for my exhibitions. I’m immensely proud that I have visited 35 countries so far.

WAS THERE A FAMOUS ARTIST OR A MENTOR WHO INFLUENCED YOU IN YOUR CAREER?

I see life, and everything in it, as an object of art. On top of that, I am open to learn from everything and everyone. I’m my own greatest tutor.

My greatest aim in the future is to take part in the most important auctions around the world, such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s. I also want to my work to be displayed in contemporary art museums like Pompidou, Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofía, Guggenheim, Tate Modern, Museu D’art Contemporani De Barcelona, Musée National D’art Moderne, Castello Di Rivoli Museum Of Contemporary Art, Museo D’arte Contemporanea Di Roma, Van Abbemuseum, stedelijk Museum, Hamburger Bahnhof Museum Fur Gegenwart, Whitney Museum, Walker Art Center, New York Contemporary Art Center, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts, and the Louvre to name a few! At the same time, I will make it my goal to take part in the most important centers and environments with my immortal works and NFTs.

The wall panels were manufactured in Switzerland, and the Murano chandelier in Italy. The atmosphere illustrates the world of Rolex and offers privacy and professional advice, with many staff who have been with Modern Art Studio for over 30 years. The story of Modern Art Studio dates back to 1936, when its founder Naji Murad had his original shop in Government Avenue, Manama. By 1940, history was made when the founder of Rolex Geneva, Hans Wilsdorf, officially appointed Modern Art Studio as the first and only Rolex agent in the Gulf. Operating from his store on Government Avenue, Murad promoted and sold watches in Bahrain, as well as to his sub agents in other GCC countries. He later recommended them to Rolex to become official agents, many of whom are still distributors of Rolex today. Another milestone was reached in 1978, when Modern Art Studio’s new Rolex showroom was opened by Mr. André Heiniger CEO of Rolex. Genuinely impressed by Modern Art Studio at the time, Heiniger

proclaimed it “one of the best Rolex shops in the world.” One of its notable showcases was a display of the exclusive watches cleverly arranged into individual letters to spell the name ROLEX. Today, Modern Art Studio maintains its legacy as a family business as it continues to operate under the wise leadership of Richard and David, the sons of Naji Murad.

Hans Wilsdorf went on to found Tudor watches in 1946, and the first Tudor Boutique in Bahrain and the Gulf was opened by Modern Art Studio in December 2014. To this day, Modern Art Studio continues to be leaders in promoting Rolex and Tudor watches in the GCC.

Black Panther (2018) – Cataratas do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls)

One of the highest grossing films of all time, Marvel Studio’s Black Panther whisked away viewers with its visually stunning cinematic experience. Footage of the Warrior Falls was filmed at the most spectacular waterfall system in the world, Iguazu. Located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Waterfall has been listed on the World Heritage List and receives over a million tourists annually. Visiting this natural wonder is a must for fans of Black Panther and nature-lovers alike. The Incredible Hulk (2008) – Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro is one of the most visited cities in South America and is known for its beautiful beaches, carnival, its samba culture, soaring

mountains and iconic landmarks. In the past few years, Rio de Janeiro has attracted a growing number of international productions including the Marvel Studio blockbuster, The Incredible Hulk. Another famous movie filmed in Rio de Janeiro is Moonraker, the 1979 spy-fi film and the eleventh in the James Bond series. In the movie, Bond follows the trail from California to Venice, Rio de Janeiro, the Amazon rainforest, and finally into outer space to prevent a plot to wipe out the world population and to recreate humanity with a master race. Bond takes on Jaws on top of the cable car which was filmed at Sugarloaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) – Lençóis Maranhenses

Brazil is known for its unique landscapes and extraordinary geomorphological sites. The spectacular Lençóis Maranhenses National Park offers one of the most picturesque landscapes in Brazil, with rolling white sand dunes and sparkling clear blue water stretching out for miles. We stayed in the Thilamaafushi Villa, one of the 141 spacious villas of the resort, located in the south of Lhaviyani Atoll, 35-minutes seaplane north on Thilamaafushi Island. Cocooned in its own little alcove of the island, the Thilamaafushi Villa is an ideal space for families and groups seeking a private hideaway to soak in the destination’s relaxing vibe. Swaying palm trees provide privacy around the villa, whilst fresh ocean breezes flow through the villa’s three bedrooms, three bathrooms, living spaces, and alfresco lounge with a private pool.

A secluded hideaway surrounded by a shimmering lagoon; the resort’s guests are invited to step out of their daily routine and into a glamorous getaway where wandering sans agenda and lingering longer are encouraged. The resort’s private island Bodu Finolhu, where lush tropical forest contrasts with white sandy beaches,

offers guests a range of exclusive experiences. Thilamaafushi is defined as “island surrounded by vast lagoon” in Dhivehi, the local parlance of the Maldives. The nine-hectare natural island brims with flora & fauna and distinct habitats including coral reefs, seagrass meadows and mangrove forests that are unique to the resort environment and support the biodiversity of the surrounding ecosystem. Although the location alone makes for a Robinson Crusoe feeling, there is an even more secluded option: on Bodu Finolhu, the resort’s private island, guests can choose from a variety of experiences, including Beachside Picnic, Sunset by the Sea, Stargazing, or even being accompanied by a photographer who captures unforgettable moments with loved ones via drone and camera.

We found the resort’s range of European-inspired brand programs thoroughly enjoyable, as they fused the spirit of the Maldives in every bite. As part of the weekly culinary events, “Au Soleil” encourages a summer state of mind with an activation at “Golden Hour”, the magical hour at the end of a day under the sun where guests will enjoy European-inspired petit plates, specially designed rosé cocktails and Le Scoop by Le Méridien handcrafted gelato or sorbet, set against a soundtrack of live music and waves lapping at the shore. restaurant. Families can try their hand at foraging in the resort’s own 500m2 greenhouse, where they will immerse in the importance of hydroponic farming practices, followed by a cooking class and meal at The Greenhouse.

To inspire children, youths and even adults to connect with the environment around them, Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa has launched its own program, “Thilamaafushi Marine Master’s”: Spearheaded by Sub Oceanic, the resort’s dive partner and in-house marine biologist, guests can book modules in areas such as atoll topography, coral health monitoring, and turtle, ray and shark identification. Living Amid FLOWERS

After a stint running Paris’ first dried flower boutique in a corner of L’Officine Universelle Buly’s Marais shop, Franco-Japanese florist, Miyoko Yasumoto decided to open her Parisian floral workshop, Une Maison dans les Arbres in 2018. Her penchant for dried bouquets, and the way she incorporates seasonal cut flowers and other greenery from small local producers, is her signature touch.

Born in 1969 in France, to a French mother and Japanese father, Miyoko Yasumoto spent her childhood and adolescence in France and then in Japan. Back in France she began studying biology, but always loved and practiced drawing. She reoriented herself towards graphic design studies and worked as an artistic director for 20 years in design agencies, serving brands. She decided she wanted to reconnect with handiwork, magic, and aesthetic sublimation through simple creations that evoke meaning.

She naturally turned to Ikebana, a centuryold Japanese floral art, which brings together her interest in nature and artistic practice and follows Japan’s culture. She then completed a reconversion training at the School of Florists in Paris in 2016, followed by internships in a Parisian palace and some beautiful flower shops in Paris to obtain her Cap de fleuriste in 2017. She was then quickly contacted by L’Officine Universelle Buly’s team to set up a dried flower shop, the first in Paris. In January 2018, she created her own workshop.

With her professional experience in the field of design, she offers brands a tailor-made service

for each request, integrating in her floral work brand image, scenography, and graphics. Her ability to understand the emotional specificity of each request is translated beautifully through her creations. The compositions are original and personalized, ephemeral or durable, from the soliflore to the scenography of showcases, as well as objects such as herbariums and gardens under glass.

Her philosophy revolves around the diversity of simple flowers. She considers flowers to be mirrors to the heart, reflecting the mood of each moment and revealing the complexity of secret emotions. Although ephemeral when fresh, flowers can imprint a lasting sensation, a sign of a singular encounter. Eternal, preserved, or dried, they accompany and dialogue with us for months, years, even a lifetime. We decided to take the all-new Audi e-tron GT for a drive around Dubai, and it delivered on its promise of a wonderful electric driving experience.

Perhaps this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, as the RS e-tron GT is built alongside the legendary Audi R8 at the Böllinger Höfe facility in Germany. This is the place where attention to detail meets precision and quality. With the wheelbase and presence of a gran turismo, the Audi RS e-tron GT feels at home on the grid and the front drive. The power delivery that the Audi RS e-tron GT offers with its fully electric quattro all-wheel drive is impressive. With an electric drive on both the front and rear axles, it can deliver up to 440 kW of power. In the spirit of a gran turismo, the high-tech suspension offers comfort, sportiness, and everyday usability. The sculptural design unites the dynamic proportions of a gran turismo with the unmistakable characteristics of an Audi RS model.

When it comes to design language, the Audi RS e-tron GT is fluent in impressing car aficionados.

From its boldly sculpted shoulder line to the muscular rear wheel arches and its distinctive

rear diffuser the Audi RS e-tron GT simmers with strength. Striking lines and subtle curves draw the eye to its key features - its low center of gravity is highlighted by the accentuated sills and long wheelbase. An animated light strip runs across the entire width of the rear, framed at its outer edges by individual V-shaped LED segments within the lighting units themselves. This double reversing light and indicator function is a first for Audi. The optional matrix LED headlights with Audi laser light are a fundamental aspect of a progressive design language. One unmistakable statement is the light signature with the blue X element, from where the dynamic light sequencing sees a wave of light spread horizontally. The boldly sculpted shoulder line and the distinctive rear diffuser give an impression of impressive strength. The gently sloping roof line that extends well into the rear of the Audi RS e-tron GT expresses the vehicle’s urgency to move forward even while it is stationary.

Starting with the powertrain, Aston Martin’s engineering team set about realizing the full potential of the DBX’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. Led by Aston Martin’s Head of Powertrain

Engineering, Ralph Illenberger, the DBX707’s engine now features ball bearing turbochargers and a bespoke engine calibration to liberate more power and torque. Also new to Aston Martin’s flagship high performance SUV is a 9-speed ‘wet clutch’ automatic transmission. Capable of managing much increased torque loadings compared with a regular torque converter automatic, this high-performance transmission allows output of the 4.0-litre V8 to be lifted to an immense 707PS and 900Nm, increases of 157PS and 200Nm over the DBX (V8).

In keeping with its extensive engineering upgrades, the exterior and interior of the DBX707 have received an equally thorough design makeover. The result is spectacular - overtly sporting but with the style and attention to detail for which Aston Martin is rightly celebrated. New front-end treatment sees the DBX receive a larger front grille and all-new design of DRL complete with new air intakes and brake cooling ducts, plus a new front splitter profile. The satin chrome grille - enlarged to significantly increase cooling airflow to both the ultra-high performance V8 and new 9-speed transmission - features double vanes, the six horizontal bars now split to create more visual interest and make this range-topping model immediately identifiable.

Royal Oak: From Iconoclast to Icon retraces how the Royal Oak created a stir upon its release in 1972, with its armor of hand-finished stainless steel encasing the thinnest self-winding mechanical movement of its era, and shone around the world in the decades that followed. For the first time, steel was ennobled to the same status as gold. Inspired by the profound cultural, artistic and industrial changes of the 1960s and early 1970s, this forward-

Although an outlier at birth, the Royal Oak soon found an audience among the free-spirited youth, who recognized the watch’s audacious blend of technological advances and ancestral craftsmanship. The Royal Oak has been a canvas of innovation ever since, conversing with art, music, architecture and sports. Today, a cultural artefact beyond watchmaking, the Royal Oak is an object of permanence in a world of obsolescence, embodying the creative freedom and the youthful spirit of those who have contributed to writing its story.

Furthering the Royal Oak’s unique cultural journey, Bill Prince also gives voice to what he calls the “Generation Royal Oak,” a group of watch connoisseurs who came of age following the timepiece’s launch and whose achievements reflect the global, cultural movement that inspired it. This cohort notably includes the likes of Kevin Hart, Bjarke Ingels, Elle Macpherson, Mark Ronson, Serena Williams and Ning Zetao, to name but a few.

For this ambitious project, Audemars Piguet has worked in collaboration with luxury publishing house Assouline.
