DURRAH LUXURY MAGAZINE PO Box 13990, Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain T. +973 77077777 F. +973 17226555 VOLUME 18 ISSUE 04 SUMMER 2026
Welcome to a new edition of Durrah magazine, where we continue to celebrate vision, creativity, and refinement across the worlds of luxury, culture, and contemporary life. Each issue reflects our commitment to sharing stories that inspire, connecting readers with the people, ideas, and experiences shaping Bahrain, the region, and the wider world. At the heart of this edition is a powerful expression of national unity and gratitude. His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s signing of a document of thanks and loyalty to the citizens of Bahrain reflects the enduring bond between the Kingdom’s leadership and its people. Durrah Magazine’s leadership and editorial team have also reaffirmed their loyalty and appreciation to His Majesty, renewing the publication’s commitment to celebrating Bahrain’s achievements, heritage, and progressive vision. These gestures embody the shared pride and sense of purpose that continue to guide the Kingdom under the leadership of His Majesty and the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. This issue also celebrates Bahrain’s growing presence across sport, luxury, and international culture. We highlight the conclusion of the Kingdom’s 2025–2026 horseracing season, led by His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and look ahead to the return of the Royal Bahrain Concours, which will once again bring exceptional automobiles, leading collectors, and curated lifestyle experiences to the Kingdom.
Our conversations with industry leaders offer further perspectives on the ideas shaping global luxury. Alshaya Group CEO John Hadden discusses the evolution of retail across the Middle East, from the continued success of Boots to the regional arrival of Primark and Ulta Beauty. Maria Laffont, Chief Product Officer at TAG Heuer, explores the balance between watchmaking heritage, technological innovation, and the brand’s enduring connection to motorsport. Hublot Chief Executive Officer Julien Tornare reflects on the evolving meaning of the brand’s Art of Fusion, the expectations of younger luxury consumers, and the importance of combining creative expression with technical watchmaking excellence. Spanning art, architecture, gastronomy, and cultural exchange, this edition of Durrah presents ideas and experiences that celebrate the richness of our region while engaging with the global perspectives shaping luxury today.

A new chapter in luxury dining unfolds with the arrival of The Royal Marrakech, a theatrical Moroccan destination where mystery, music, and indulgence come together in a richly immersive experience and, marking a global first, the opportunity for guests to receive a Hermès Birkin bag each month. 01 02
Inspired by the opulence of Marrakech’s grand palaces and the intoxicating energy of its midnight salons, The Royal Marrakech invites guests to step behind the red velvet curtain into a world where dinner becomes a spectacle and the night is only just beginning. Flames rise, music builds, and dishes arrive with dramatic precision, carved, finished, and presented tableside by a charismatic team. Deep red velvet, glowing candlelight, live musicians, and the scent of aromatic spices create a setting that is both seductive and transportive. At the heart of the experience lies a distinctive expression of modern luxury. Each month, selected guests who have dined at The Royal Marrakech are invited to participate in a draw, with the opportunity to receive one of the world’s most coveted handbags, the Hermès Birkin. This rare element reflects the same principles that define The Royal Marrakech: craftsmanship, rarity, and timeless allure.
The menu brings together Moroccan richness and contemporary decadence, where layered flavours and refined techniques meet bold, sensory presentation. As the first course is served, the true magic of the venue awakens. At The Royal Marrakech, dinner becomes theatre. This is not background entertainment; it is an immersive, 360-degree spectacle. Live musicians, dancers, and performers build momentum throughout the night, gradually shifting the atmosphere from refined dining to a vibrant, high-energy celebration. What begins as dinner evolves seamlessly into a late-night party, where music rises, lights dim, and the spirit of Marrakech comes alive in full force. At The Royal Marrakech, the night does not simply end; it unfolds into an unforgettable, star-lit celebration of luxury. It remains, definitively, the crown jewel of Bahrain’s nightlife elite. the-royalmarrakech.com

Shaping Retail Future
As Alshaya Group continues to shape the retail landscape across the Middle East, CEO John Hadden reflects on the success of iconic brands, the evolution of customer experiences, talent development in Saudi Arabia, and the opportunities driving the company’s next phase of growth. 01
BOOTS IS A HOUSEHOLD NAME ACROSS THE GCC TODAY. LOOKING BACK AT TWO DECADES OF THE BRAND IN THE REGION, WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE HAS BEEN THE MOST CRITICAL FACTOR IN ADAPTING A BRITISH HERITAGE BRAND TO THE SPECIFIC HEALTH AND BEAUTY NEEDS OF MIDDLE EASTERN CONSUMERS? We’re currently celebrating 20 years of Boots in the region. We were Boots’ first international franchise partner and brought the brand to the Middle East two decades ago. Most people were already familiar with Boots because they had travelled to the UK. It’s a highly trusted brand, particularly when it comes to healthcare, wellness and beauty. We were fortunate that consumers already knew and trusted Boots before it arrived here. While we’ve made some adaptations for the local market, the proposition remains largely the same. Many of the products you see in our Middle East stores are the same products you would find in the UK.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PRODUCTS THAT ARE EXCLUSIVE TO BOOTS? Yes, we do. One of our leading brands is No7, which is a beauty and skincare brand. We also tailor parts of the product offering to meet the preferences and needs of local consumers.
PRIMARK’S RECENT LAUNCH AT DUBAI MALL ATTRACTED AN INCREDIBLE 35,000 SHOPPERS DURING ITS OPENING WEEKEND. HOW DOES THE SUCCESS OF THIS HIGH-VOLUME, VALUE-DRIVEN BRAND
INFLUENCE YOUR STRATEGY FOR FUTURE FRANCHISE PARTNERSHIPS IN A MARKET OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH PREMIUM RETAIL? I think people across the region have been waiting for Primark to arrive for many years. It’s one of the most recognized global retail brands that hadn’t yet entered the Middle East. We’ve been discussing the opportunity with Primark for the past decade, and we were delighted that they chose the Middle East for their first regional stores. We opened our first Primark store at The Avenues Kuwait in October, and this Dubai Mall location is our third store in the region. Primark offers great quality at great prices. The products you see here are the same as those available in Europe and other international markets, and they’re offered at very similar price points. It’s all about delivering outstanding value without compromising on quality.
WITH ULTA BEAUTY NOW ENTERING THE KUWAIT AND DUBAI MARKETS, HOW DO YOU SEE THE OMNICHANNEL BEAUTY EXPERIENCE EVOLVING FOR ALSHAYA GROUP? WHAT UNIQUE VALUE DOES ULTA BEAUTY BRING TO AN ALREADY CROWDED BEAUTY LANDSCAPE? That’s a great question. Alshaya Group has been operating in the beauty sector for over 40 years, so we have a long heritage in the category. What Ulta Beauty allows us to do is create a truly comprehensive beauty destination under one roof. The brand brings together more than 650 beauty brands, combining well-established names that customers already know and trust with exciting
emerging brands from the US, Europe and beyond. It gives customers access to the very best of what’s available today, while also introducing them to new brands and products they may not have discovered otherwise. That’s what makes the Ulta Beauty proposition so compelling.
YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED THE ALSHAYA RETAIL ACADEMY TO EMPOWER SAUDI YOUTH. HOW IS ALSHAYA GROUP ALIGNING ITS LONG-TERM COMMERCIAL GOALS WITH LOCAL TALENT DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES IN THE KINGDOM? We’ve done extensive research and planning around this initiative. The Alshaya Retail Academy was created to help develop the tremendous talent that exists across Saudi Arabia. We’re particularly proud to be the largest private-sector employer of Saudi women outside the government sector. We want to provide opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender or age, to build meaningful and successful careers. By offering structured learning and development through the Academy, we’re investing in the future workforce. As we continue to expand across Saudi Arabia, we want to ensure we have highly skilled Saudi talent equipped with the training and opportunities needed to grow and succeed.
ALSHAYA GROUP HAS COMMITTED SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT TO THE AVENUES RIYADH. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR VISION FOR HOW THIS DESTINATION WILL REDEFINE THE RETAIL AND LEISURE EXPERIENCE IN THE SAUDI CAPITAL?

I believe The Avenues Riyadh will transform the retail experience, not only in Riyadh but across Saudi Arabia and the wider region. The mall is scheduled to open in March 2027. THE AURA LOYALTY PROGRAM HAS BECOME A MAJOR SUCCESS ACROSS MULTIPLE COUNTRIES. HOW IS ALSHAYA GROUP USING THE DATA AND INSIGHTS GENERATED BY AURA TO PERSONALIZE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE?
Sustainability has been a major focus for us over the past decade and remains a very important part of our strategy. We work closely with many of our global brand partners, particularly in apparel, to ensure responsible and ethical sourcing practices are maintained throughout the supply chain. Beyond sourcing, we also look at how products are transported, distributed and managed, with a focus on reducing environmental impact and improving our overall carbon footprint. Collaboration is key. We work hand-in-hand with our brand partners, many of whom have globally recognized sustainability programs, to ensure we’re making meaningful progress in this area.
Aura was created as a single rewards platform across all Alshaya Group brands. Customers can earn points while shopping with one brand and redeem them across many others. For example, a customer can earn rewards while shopping at Primark and then redeem those points at Shake Shack, Raising Cane’s, Victoria’s Secret or any of our other participating brands. The data generated through Aura helps us personalize communications and offers for individual

THE FUTURE OF Ultra-Luxury Living Shrikant Dash, Deputy MD – Corporate and Head of Investment & Strategy at Atmosphere Core, discusses the philosophy behind SIX & SIX PRIVATE RESIDENCES, revealing why scarcity, stewardship, and emotional value are becoming the defining currencies of modern luxury. WITH THE SIX & SIX PRIVATE RESIDENCES DIVISION INTENTIONALLY LIMITING ITS RESIDENTIAL FOOTPRINT, YOU ARE CHOOSING EXCLUSIVITY AND RARITY OVER SCALE. FROM AN INVESTMENT AND STRATEGY PERSPECTIVE, HOW DO YOU EVALUATE THE LONG-TERM FINANCIAL VIABILITY OF A PROJECT WHERE VALUE IS DRIVEN BY SCARCITY RATHER THAN VOLUME? The industry has been focused on scale for a long time, with success measured through more keys, more units, and more destinations, but in the UHNW segment scarcity itself has become the defining marker of luxury. With SIX & SIX PRIVATE RESIDENCES, the residential footprint has been kept deliberately limited and integrated within the wider resort rather than developed as large standalone inventory, so homeowners have access to a private residential setting while remaining connected to the broader resort ecosystem, including lifestyle, service, wellness, and operations. The model is not volume-driven and is not structured around traditional sales cycles. Value is being protected through scarcity, privacy, and longterm ownership, with residences positioned less as inventory and more as assets intended to hold emotional and financial value over time.
03
THE LUXURY BRANDED RESIDENCE MARKET IS CURRENTLY HYPER-COMPETITIVE. WHEN BIDDING FOR PRIZED DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES AGAINST GIANT GLOBAL LEGACY HOTEL BRANDS, WHAT IS THE SPECIFIC ASSET-OWNER ADVANTAGE THAT
THE SIX & SIX PRIVATE RESIDENCES MODEL PITCHES THAT THESE CORPORATE GIANTS SIMPLY CANNOT MATCH? The large global brands absolutely bring strength in terms of systems and distribution. But sometimes that scale also creates rigidity. What we offer residential owners is something much more tailored. We are not applying a global template onto a destination. We are building around the soul of the place itself. Because we are highly curated and guided by a clear philosophy, we can respond with greater sensitivity and flexibility. This makes our conversations more collaborative, creative, and personal. I also believe there is growing fatigue around branded luxury becoming overly standardised. Many UHNW buyers today want something that feels rare, deeply considered, and emotionally distinct not another version of the same global experience replicated everywhere. That is where our advantage sits. We are building identity, not just branded real estate.
THE “ART OF LIVING” PHILOSOPHY RELIES ON ARCHITECTURE AND MATERIALS THAT ENDURE FOR GENERATIONS. SINCE TRADITIONAL FINANCIAL MODELS PRIORITIZE QUICK PAYBACK PERIODS AND SHORT-TERM INTERNAL RATE OF RETURN (IRR), HOW DO YOU UNDERWRITE THE HIGH UPFRONT COST OF GENERATIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP WITHOUT COMPROMISING NEAR-TERM INVESTOR RETURNS? Traditional development models often treat craftsmanship as a cost, while we see it as long-term value preservation. The upfront investment is higher when you use materials that age well, architecture

designed for longevity, and infrastructure built to last, but branded residences within a resort environment operate differently from standalone residential assets. Because these residences sit within a wider luxury resort ecosystem, owners have the option to place their homes into a professionally managed rental programme when they are not in residence, creating an additional revenue stream without diluting the exclusivity of the asset. The wider resort offering, including hospitality services, wellness, and operations, supports long-term desirability and pricing stability. From the outset, the focus is on lifecycle performance and operational efficiency. The return is not only in rental yield and appreciation, but in the enduring value of a highly limited residence within a fully serviced ultra-luxury environment.
BUILDING ULTRA-LUXURY RESIDENCES IN FRAGILE OR REMOTE ENVIRONMENTS REQUIRES SELF-SUSTAINING INFRASTRUCTURE. WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON LINE-ITEM OR OPERATIONAL BLIND SPOT DEVELOPERS’ UNDER-BUDGET WHEN CALCULATING THE LONG-TERM COST OF OFFSHORE SUPPLY CHAINS AND ZEROWASTE MANAGEMENT?
The biggest blind spot is operational continuity. People usually budget for construction but underestimate is the complexity of maintaining ultra-high standards in remote environments year after year. Things like offshore logistics, specialist labour, energy redundancy, waste management systems, and spare-part access become operational ecosystems of their own. Zero-waste ambitions, for example, sound very attractive in presentations. But in reality, they require constant discipline, infrastructure, partnerships, staff training, and ongoing investment. In remote luxury environments, sustainability is not an add-on. It becomes part of the operational backbone of the entire project.
treat reserve planning as if conditions are neutral. Maintenance thinking starts early in the design phase, focusing on how materials will perform over time, how often components may need replacement, and how accessible maintenance will be once the residences are operational. We prioritise materials that weather naturally rather than those that constantly resist the environment, which is particularly important in tropical settings where exposure is continuous and long-term performance matters more than initial appearance. Reserve structures should be transparent from the outset, with lifecycle costs properly reflected rather than adjusted to improve early projections.
PLACING HIGH-END DESIGN AT THE MERCY OF HARSH MARINE ELEMENTS ACCELERATES STRUCTURAL DEPRECIATION. TO PROTECT THE BUYERS’ LONG-TERM EQUITY, HOW DO YOU MATHEMATICALLY OFFSET THESE AGGRESSIVE TROPICAL MAINTENANCE CYCLES WITHIN THE PROPERTY’S ONGOING RESERVE FUND STRUCTURES?
AN ULTRA-EXCLUSIVE RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY DEMANDS A DEEPLY PERSONALISED SERVICE PHILOSOPHY. AS SIX & SIX PRIVATE RESIDENCES GROWS, WHAT GUARDRAILS, TRAINING FRAMEWORKS, AND CULTURAL PRACTICES ARE IN PLACE TO ENSURE THAT SCALE NEVER COMES AT THE EXPENSE OF INTIMACY, INDIVIDUAL RECOGNITION, AND THE HIGHLY BESPOKE EXPERIENCE THAT DISCERNING HOMEOWNERS EXPECT?
Marine environments place significant stress on buildings, with salt, humidity, and UV exposure accelerating material ageing, which makes it risky to
“For us, luxury is about creating environments that feel timeless, deeply personal, and emotionally restorative.” SIX & SIX is built around a simple idea that luxury should respond to the individual rather than requiring the individual to adapt to a predefined experience, particularly as brands scale and intimacy is often the first thing to be diluted. The residences are integrated within the wider SIX & SIX ecosystem rather than operating as standalone assets, which allows homeowners to retain privacy while also having access to the resort’s service, wellness, dining, and operational infrastructure. The butler system sits at the centre of this experience, with continuity and familiarity developed over time so that support becomes based on understanding individual preferences, routines, and expectations rather than transactional service delivery. Training goes beyond operational delivery into observation, cultural awareness, behavioural understanding, and long-term familiarity with each homeowner. Scale is intentionally controlled through smaller communities, limited residences, and higher staffing ratios, which helps maintain continuity between homeowners and the team. The experience is designed to remain personal and intuitive in practice rather than procedural in delivery.
THE MODERN ULTRA-HIGH-NET-WORTH (UHNW) BUYER INCREASINGLY VIEWS
LUXURY THROUGH THE LENS OF WELLNESS, PRIVACY, AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN RATHER THAN OVERT OPULENCE. HOW HAS THE SIX & SIX PRIVATE RESIDENCES ARCHITECTURAL AND MASTER-PLANNING STRATEGY EVOLVED TO CAPTURE THIS SHIFT TOWARD UNDERSTATED LUXURY WITHOUT LOSING ITS PREMIUM MARKET POSITION? Today’s UHNW buyer is more understated, and the shift is very noticeable. People are looking for privacy, calm, emotional wellbeing, functional beauty, and spaces that support how they want to live, which has influenced our architecture and master planning quite significantly. We focus more on proportion, natural materiality, ventilation, spatial flow, acoustics, landscape integration, and emotional comfort, with wellness embedded quietly into the experience rather than presented theatrically. This approach requires restraint and confidence because understated luxury is harder to execute well, where every detail carries more weight. For us, luxury is about creating environments that feel timeless, deeply personal, and emotionally restorative. sixandsixresidences.com

Time for
PERFECTION A. Lange & Söhne CEO, Wilhelm Schmid reveals the brand’s approach to growth, craftsmanship, client relationships, and preserving traditional watchmaking values in a rapidly evolving industry shaped by digital influence. YOU’VE RECENTLY OPENED NEW BOUTIQUES IN LONDON AND CHICAGO, AND RENOVATED IN SINGAPORE. HOW DOES THIS SELECTIVE EXPANSION FIT INTO YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF “CONTROLLED, SUSTAINABLE AND SLOW GROWTH,” AND WHAT DOES A PHYSICAL BOUTIQUE OFFER THAT DIGITAL CHANNELS CANNOT REPLICATE FOR A BRAND LIKE LANGE? In Singapore, we had a small boutique for a long time while waiting for the right location, which took time. The London boutique was also delayed due to property availability. Chicago was a natural expansion, as being present only in a few U.S. cities is not sufficient, and now the network there is complete. Most of our clients want to see a face behind the brand. They want someone who can guide them and support them, especially when it comes to difficult-to-obtain watches. The digital world is very transactional, but our customers are not.
YOU’VE DESCRIBED A. LANGE & SÖHNE AS HAVING “TWO SOULS” – AN UNDERSTATED, PRECISE DIAL AND AN OPULENT, HAND-FINISHED MOVEMENT. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THIS PHILOSOPHY IN AN INDUSTRY INCREASINGLY DRIVEN BY SOCIAL MEDIA AND BOLD, RECOGNIZABLE DESIGNS? Communication channels change constantly, so content must align with who you are and the audience you want to reach. The two souls of our watches will not change. The level of detail in the movement, even in areas that are not visible, reflects the promise of the brand.
YOU CURRENTLY PRODUCE AROUND
4,500–5,000 WATCHES ANNUALLY WITH ABOUT 650 PEOPLE IN PRODUCTION. WHAT IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST CONSTRAINT PREVENTING YOU FROM INCREASING THAT NUMBER? It is a combination of factors. We train our own watchmakers, and the profession is regulated. The apprenticeship takes three years, followed by at least two more years of on-the-job training before someone becomes fully effective. There are no shortcuts, and watchmakers cannot immediately work on highly complicated pieces. These constraints define the limits of what we can produce, regardless of demand.
MANY COLLECTORS FIND IT CHALLENGING TO ACQUIRE SOUGHT-AFTER MODELS LIKE THE ODYSSEUS. HOW DO YOU DISTINGUISH BETWEEN A GENUINE ENTHUSIAST AND AN “INVESTOR COLLECTOR,” AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE HOPING TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BRAND? Many requests are driven by resale intent rather than genuine passion, which is not a market we aim to serve. Building a relationship starts at the boutique by engaging with the team and demonstrating genuine interest over time, often through other purchases. We prioritize longstanding clients who have been waiting rather than allocating pieces to new customers.
YOU’VE SAID, “NEVER WASTE A GOOD CRISIS” AND NOTED THAT A. LANGE & SÖHNE “SURVIVED 45 YEARS OF COMMUNISM.” HOW HAS THAT UNIQUE HISTORY SHAPED THE BRAND’S RESILIENCE, AND WHAT LESSONS FROM

“The human craftsmanship is essential to our existence.” THAT ERA APPLY TO TODAY’S ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTIES? A key part of our culture is to never stand still, based on the idea that one should expect from oneself what one expects from a watch. We do not rely on past achievements but focus on continuous improvement, making each watch slightly better than the previous one.
IN AN AGE OF AI AND INCREASING AUTOMATION, HOW DO YOU PROTECT THE HUMAN ELEMENT OF WATCHMAKING WHILE STILL RUNNING A MODERN, GLOBAL BUSINESS? If precision were the only reason to buy a watch, a phone would be enough. What clients value is the idea that a skilled person has created something complex. If we replaced that with automation for speed, we would undermine the core of what we represent. The human craftsmanship is essential to our existence.

DROVE THIS DECISION, AND HOW DOES IT REFLECT YOUR VISION WHILE REMAINING TRUE TO THE BRAND’S DNA? We revisited a highly complex watch and created a new movement, incorporating advancements since the previous version, including the day-night indication. Developing the Lumen concept for an elegant watch required extensive experimentation, especially with the numerals, to balance daytime elegance and nighttime visibility. The development process took around six years.
YOU’VE MENTIONED NEVER MEETING GÜNTER BLÜMLEIN BUT BEING INFLUENCED BY HIS SPIRIT. WHAT PART OF THAT LEGACY IS MOST IMPORTANT TO PRESERVE? He established clear design families with strict codes that must be maintained. We see ourselves as craftsmen first, not a luxury brand. The focus remains on the watches and the people who create them, and that mindset should continue for future generations. alange-soehne.com

FUSION REDEFINED Julien Tornare, Chief Executive Officer of Hublot, discusses how the brand evolves its “Art of Fusion,” balancing heritage with innovation, redefining luxury for younger audiences, and navigating global challenges while strengthening watchmaking credibility and emotional connections through design, materials, and partnerships. WHAT DOES FUSION MEAN TODAY COMPARED TO FIVE YEARS AGO, ESPECIALLY ACROSS WATCHMAKING, CULTURE, AND NEW COMMUNITIES? Fusion used to focus on combining different materials. Today, it goes far beyond that. It is about bringing the highest level of watchmaking expertise, equal to the best in the industry, together with a contemporary, disruptive, and innovative spirit. Hublot combines traditional mechanical craftsmanship with modern creativity and design, giving clients both technical excellence in the movement and innovation in the aesthetic.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING NEITHER TOO FASHION-FORWARD NOR TOO TRADITIONAL, AND WHAT REFLECTS THAT BALANCE?
Luxury today is about expressing personality. When wearing a Hublot watch, the client makes a statement about individuality and character. Hublot clients do not want to wear the same watch as everyone else. They choose the brand to stand out and embrace their difference, rather than follow traditional status symbols.
HOW DO YOU PREVENT ICONS LIKE THE BIG BANG FROM LIMITING INNOVATION ACROSS COLLECTIONS? The Big Bang and Classic Fusion coexist with distinct identities and both allow room for innovation and new materials. The brand also discontinues models when they reach their peak, maintaining strong demand and increasing desirability, while creating space for new ideas and developments.
HOW DO YOU ADDRESS SUSTAINABILITY IN MATERIAL INNOVATION?
Hublot now balances its past with its future. While the brand was once focused only on building forward, it now integrates its history into its approach. It follows strict, high-end criteria in movement-making to achieve perfection, as seen in pieces like the Unico chronograph, while continuing to innovate in materials and design. Innovations such as using osmium, the rarest material, and setting baguette diamonds on sapphire demonstrate how the brand maintains a modern, dynamic edge while respecting traditional watchmaking standards.
Through LVMH’s Life 360 framework, Hublot applies strict standards to sourcing and production. The brand closely monitors suppliers and even the suppliers of its suppliers, ensuring that materials such as gold and diamonds are sourced responsibly, with respect for the environment and working conditions. This level of control reflects the responsibility expected by clients today.

and connection. Beyond increasing awareness and desirability, they allow clients to feel part of the brand. Through the Hublotista community and interactions with ambassadors, the brand creates memorable experiences. Moments with figures such as athletes and football legends give clients experiences they will remember, reinforcing the emotional value of the brand.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE TODAY? The global situation remains the main challenge. Economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions affect consumer confidence, which is essential in luxury. While Hublot continues to perform well through innovation and creativity, a more stable and positive global environment would support the industry.
WHAT TRENDS WILL SHAPE HUBLOT’S STRATEGY IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? Clients are becoming more knowledgeable and expect to buy the best products available. While Hublot is well known for materials and bold marketing, there is a need to communicate more about its watchmaking expertise. With strong in-house movements, a ten-year warranty, and a combination of technical excellence and creative design, the brand offers a unique proposition that it aims to highlight more clearly. hublot.com

Maria Laffont, Chief Product Officer at TAG Heuer, shares how the brand balances heritage with innovation, from motorsport-inspired design to evolving product lifecycles, while maintaining its focus on performance, craftsmanship, and forward-looking creativity. AS CPO AT TAG HEUER, HOW DO YOU BALANCE HERITAGE AND TRADITIONAL WATCHMAKING CRAFTSMANSHIP WITH THE GROWING DEMAND FOR CONNECTED WATCHES AND SMARTWEAR? At TAG Heuer, we are very lucky to have a rich heritage of more than 166 years, which is extremely important to us. Every time we create, we start by diving into our archives, because authenticity and meaning are essential to the creative process. That said, we never copy the past. We are an avant-garde brand, driven by innovation. We take inspiration from our heritage and reinterpret it for today’s world, using the most advanced technologies while continuing to innovate.
WHAT IS YOUR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PHILOSOPHY WHEN IT COMES TO MERGING LUXURY DESIGN WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONALITY, ESPECIALLY IN CATEGORIES LIKE MOTORSPORTS CHRONOGRAPHS OR WEARABLE TECH?
03
Our philosophy is embedded in the name TAG Heuer itself. “TAG” stands for Techniques d’AvantGarde. Every project is built on a dialogue between engineering and design. We are fortunate to have a strong R&D team, and there is constant

collaboration between technical experts and creative minds. This exchange is what drives both creation and innovation.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH THE PRODUCT LIFECYCLE FOR A CLASSIC MECHANICAL WATCH VERSUS A CONNECTED TIMEPIECE, GIVEN THEIR DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY CYCLES AND CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS? This is one of the strengths of our brand. We operate across a wide spectrum, from high complications to connected watches, and the clients are different. A high complication watch is designed to last forever and be passed on to future generations. A connected watch follows a different logic, as expectations around technology and lifecycle are not the same. Even though we ensure strong maintenance and support, the approach is fundamentally different.
TAG HEUER HAS STRONG TIES TO MOTORSPORTS (FORMULA 1, PORSCHE, ETC.). HOW DO THOSE PARTNERSHIPS INFLUENCE YOUR PRODUCT ROADMAP AND MATERIAL INNOVATION CHOICES? These partnerships are a major advantage for us. We have close relationships with teams and drivers, and this gives us direct access to their

We use materials such as titanium and carbon because they are strong, lightweight, and ergonomic. This is not just about aesthetics. At TAG Heuer, design is functional. Our watches are built for performance, inspired by the same requirements found in racing.
WHAT ROLE DOES SUSTAINABILITY PLAY IN YOUR PRODUCT DECISIONS TODAY, SPECIFICALLY REGARDING SOURCING OF METALS, STRAPS, PACKAGING, AND ENDOF-LIFE PRODUCT MANAGEMENT? Sustainability is a key topic for us and is also driven by our group. We follow a clear roadmap in this area. Watches are inherently sustainable products because they are made to last and be passed down. In addition, we pay attention to sourcing and packaging. All our packaging is sustainable, and we avoid using plastic wherever possible.

CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH A RECENT PRODUCT LAUNCH WHERE YOU HAD TO MAKE A DIFFICULT TRADE OFF BETWEEN DESIGN VISION, ENGINEERING FEASIBILITY, AND TIME TO MARKET? Time to market is always a challenge. Every project is like a race. For the new Monaco, we chose to take our time. The redesign started five years ago, and we deliberately avoided rushing it. Our priority was to achieve the right design and product. Redesigning an icon is one of the most complex exercises, as you need to evolve it while keeping it instantly recognizable. We focused on ergonomics, weight reduction through titanium, and refining the proportions while preserving its square identity.
LOOKING THREE TO FIVE YEARS AHEAD, WHAT EMERGING TECHNOLOGY OR CONSUMER BEHAVIOR SHIFT EXCITES YOU MOST FOR TAG HEUER’S PRODUCT STRATEGY? We already see strong enthusiasm from clients, especially as we reconnect with our core identity. Looking ahead, we will continue to build on our partnerships in motorsport and keep telling the story of racing. We will remain focused on innovation and continue to bring energy and excitement to the brand. tagheuer.com

TIMELESS Stories At Van Cleef & Arpels, storytelling sits at the heart of watchmaking. Head of Research and Development for Watchmaking, Rainer Bernard shares how narrative drives innovation, guiding teams across design, high jewelry, and engineering. 01
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OVERALL PHILOSOPHY WHEN IT COMES TO MERGING HAUTE HORLOGERIE WITH THE POETIC AND JEWELRY-DRIVEN IDENTITY OF VAN CLEEF & ARPELS? At the center of every creation is the story. We always begin with a narrative, which becomes the guiding force of the development. Three key entities work together: the creative studio, which defines the design and aesthetics; the high jewelry craftsmanship; and the watchmaking engineering. All three must collaborate closely. The creative studio, the craftsmen, and the engineers work as one team, aligning their expertise to bring the story to life.
WHAT DOES THE R&D PROCESS LOOK LIKE FOR COMPLEX, NARRATIVE-DRIVEN TIMEPIECES FROM CONCEPT TO EXECUTION? The process always starts with the story. Once the right concept is identified, we move into sketches, technical analysis, and early design work. It is similar to creating a film. We define a script for how the piece will function and evolve over time. Every detail must be carefully planned, from movement to animation to visual elements. If something is not technically feasible, we adapt the narrative accordingly. This process involves close collaboration between experts in watchmaking,
design, high jewelry, enameling, and craftsmanship, all working together to refine the concept into a fully realized piece.
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST TECHNICAL CHALLENGES WHEN DEVELOPING MOVEMENTS WITHIN JEWELRY-FOCUSED DESIGNS? One of the main challenges is that all technical elements must remain hidden. The mechanics are designed to stay behind the scenes so that the focus remains on the visual and poetic expression. Another challenge is that each piece is unique. Because every story requires a different approach, we rarely reuse movements. Most developments start from scratch. We also aim to keep the technical design as efficient as possible. Complexity is not the goal in itself. Even when a movement contains hundreds of components, each one must be essential.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH INNOVATION WHILE STAYING TRUE TO THE BRAND’S HERITAGE? Innovation is always driven by the story. We do not innovate first and then look for a purpose. Instead, the narrative defines what needs to be developed. For example, in one piece we wanted to
depict dew drops on a leaf using diamonds set within enamel. Achieving this effect required two years of research. The innovation came from the need to realize a specific visual element within the story.
CAN YOU SHARE AN EXAMPLE OF A PROJECT WHERE THE TEAM HAD TO INVENT A NEW SOLUTION OR TECHNOLOGY? In one project involving animated elements, we needed to precisely control the power delivered by the spring to achieve the desired motion. We developed a system that adjusts torque over time, providing more power at the beginning and less towards the end. This solution was patented and allowed us to meet the technical requirements of the narrative.
HOW DOES YOUR TEAM COLLABORATE WITH HIGH JEWELRY AND DESIGN DEPARTMENTS? Collaboration is constant and essential. Every discipline is interdependent, meaning that decisions in design, craftsmanship, and engineering affect one another. The teams must communicate clearly to ensure that creative ideas are technically feasible, while technical constraints are integrated into the design. This shared process allows all teams to align and develop a cohesive final creation.
“The innovation came from the need to realize a specific visual element within the story.” 01 Head of Research and Development for Watchmaking, Rainer Bernard 02 Precision and design come together in a timepiece shaped by innovation 03 The movement reveals the complexity and precision that define every creation 04 The intricate movement takes centre stage, revealing craftsmanship and precision 05 Blending artistry with mechanical ingenuity, the Lady Arpels Jour Nuit transforms the passage of time
02 03
WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF HIGH-END MECHANICAL WATCHMAKING, AND HOW IS THE MAISON PREPARING? We will continue focusing on creating high jewelry pieces that tell time through stories. This includes poetic complications, animated scenes, and even automatons and extraordinary objects that add new dimensions to storytelling. With the expertise, craftsmanship, and technical capabilities in place, the focus is on continuing to develop new narratives and expanding how time can be expressed creatively.
WHAT WAS THE MOST REWARDING PROJECT IN YOUR CAREER AT VAN CLEEF & ARPELS? The most rewarding aspect is the overall journey. Over many years, I have seen ideas evolve from concept to final creation. Starting with an idea that seems difficult to achieve and, years later, seeing it realized in a form very close to the original vision is extremely fulfilling. Continuing to develop these creations with the team remains the most rewarding experience. 04

Into the Untamed: Living with the Tribes of the Omo Valley
Pavel Sokov is not the kind of artist who paints from a distance. The celebrated figurative painter spent two extraordinary months - across two separate expeditions in 2022 and 2024 - living inside the villages of eight remote Ethiopian tribes in the Omo Valley. Armed with brushes, canvases, and an unshakeable curiosity, he endured food poisoning, lung infections, and even witnessed a deadly shooting to bring back a body of work that has since earned him the Art Renewal Center’s prestigious Best in Show award - a $25,000 prize accompanied by an auction at Sotheby’s New York. What follows is a conversation about obsession, immersion, danger, and the profound humanity he found at the edge of the world. 01
01
YOU’VE MADE TWO SEPARATE EXPEDITIONS TO THE OMO VALLEY - OCTOBER 2022, THEN MAY 2024. MOST ARTISTS SPEND YEARS WORKING FROM REFERENCE AND NEVER LEAVE THEIR STUDIO. WHAT WAS THE CONVICTION THAT MADE YOU DECIDE THAT LIVING WITH THESE TRIBES WAS NOT JUST WORTHWHILE, BUT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY TO THE WORK? For me, travelling and experiencing places, people, and cultures different from my own has always been at the core of my interests. Because I was deeply interested in these tribes - curious about how they live, their traditions, rituals, struggles, and daily routines - I could never imagine painting them from Google images or other people’s references. For me, if you want to tell somebody’s story, you have to earn the right to do so. That means experiencing what they experience, living alongside them, speaking with them, and learning their personal stories firsthand. I feel the same way about painting landscapes. If you want to paint a place, go there and find your own unique angle on it. When you are immersed in an experience you will find that what grabs your attention is different from other artists, and that is what makes your perspective unique. When you paint from other people’s reference, you are reacting to what they found interesting. When you stay with people for extended periods of time, you begin to separate the tourist or outsider 02
perception from what is actually real. For example, some tribes closer to the main roads or villages have become accustomed to photographers visiting, and sometimes people may wear things specifically because they know photographers find them visually interesting - flowers, skulls, certain adornments even when these things are not authentic. You would never understand those nuances sitting at home. That’s why we travelled further and further away to villages that receive very few visitors, because I wanted to experience something closer to their real way of life. I also think there is something important about experiencing the daily realities alongside people, even if only in a small way. Living there, dealing with the health issues, the discomfort, nature (scorpions inside your tent, hyenas chewing your tent at night, etc) experiencing some fraction of what daily life demands from them - brings you closer to their mindset and gives you an understanding of them as people rather than subjects. THE OMO VALLEY IS HOME TO MANY TRIBES, YET YOU SOUGHT OUT EIGHT VERY SPECIFIC COMMUNITIES - THE SURI, ARBORI, DASSENICH, MURSI, BODI, HAMAR, NYANGATOM, AND KARO. WHAT DISTINGUISHED THESE PARTICULAR TRIBES FROM OTHERS IN THE REGION, AND HOW DID YOUR GUIDES MAKE ACCESS TO

But on days without disasters or unexpected changes, there was still a rhythm to life. We slept in tents and usually woke around 6 a.m., mostly because the villages woke up - goats making noise, children running around, animals everywhere, and the sun already rising. We would have breakfast prepared by the camp chef using whatever ingredients were available despite having no refrigeration or infrastructure, and then discuss with the guides what paintings or photographic work we wanted to make that day.
02 03
04
COMMUNITIES THIS REMOTE EVEN POSSIBLE? There are many tribes throughout the Omo Valley, but many communities today interact much more with the outside world and broader society than others. While they still maintain important cultural traditions, my interest was specifically in communities that remain more geographically isolated and have much less regular outside contact. That influenced not only which tribes we chose, but also which specific villages we visited. We intentionally travelled to villages that were further away and much less frequently visited by outsiders. Access to these communities depends almost entirely on relationships. Our guides were extraordinary people - often individuals who were born within tribal communities themselves, later learned English, and spent decades building trust and working with these regions. Some had previously guided major expeditions and photographers, including people like Steve McCurry. Because each tribe often speaks a different language, the process becomes even more layered. While our primary guides spoke many local languages, for each tribe we would often bring in a
local guide from that specific community or region - somebody known personally by the people there and able to communicate at a much deeper level. SIX TO TWELVE HOURS FROM THE NEAREST HOSPITAL, NO REFRIGERATION, NO SHOWERS, GUNS FIRED AT WILL, FOOD POISONING, A LUNG INFECTION - YOU PAINT A PICTURE OF CONDITIONS THAT WOULD DETER MOST TRAVELLERS, LET ALONE ARTISTS CARRYING CANVASES. CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH WHAT A TYPICAL DAY IN THE FIELD ACTUALLY LOOKED AND FELT LIKE? A typical day almost didn’t exist, because life in the field was constantly shaped by obstacles, opportunities, and whatever happened around us. On our second trip, for example, there were times when we couldn’t even reach certain tribes because bridges had collapsed from heavy rainfall or roads were completely flooded. Other days, plans would suddenly change because news would arrive that a nearby village was holding a ceremony, a marriage, or a coming-of-age ritual, and the guides would say, “We need to go now.”
YOU WERE THE ONLY PAINTER IN A GROUP OTHERWISE MADE UP OF PHOTOGRAPHERS. CAMERAS ARE FAST; PAINTING IS SLOW AND EXPOSED. HOW DID YOUR PROLONGED PHYSICAL PRESENCE IN FRONT OF A SUBJECT - BRUSH IN HAND, CANVAS OPEN - CHANGE THE QUALITY OF CONTACT YOU WERE ABLE TO MAKE WITH THE PEOPLE YOU WERE PAINTING? In some ways, painting people rather than simply photographing them felt more personal and less transactional, but it also created its own difficulties. Many people had never really encountered somebody painting before, so there was sometimes confusion about what I was doing or why. And, understandably, sitting still for two or three hours is not something most people enjoy. I discovered this almost immediately during my first trip with the first tribe I visited, the Suri. I wanted to paint a woman from life who was wearing an enormous triangular clay lip plate. These lip plates are associated with beauty, status, and elegance, although they are often worn more commonly during ceremonies or special occasions rather than continuously. What I quickly discovered was that painting and photography create completely different problems. After about fifteen minutes, she removed the lip plate because it was simply too heavy and uncomfortable to wear continuously. But once it came out, the entire structure of the face changed - muscles relaxed, the lip dangled down (as opposed to being stretched around the lip plate), everything shifted. So suddenly the painting became this negotiation where every so often I would ask if she could put it back in briefly so I could be reminded how the face muscles looked when the plate was in. YOU’VE SAID EACH TRIBE IS ENTIRELY DISTINCT, YET THAT OVERLAPPING TRADITIONS EXIST BETWEEN THEM. AFTER TWO MONTHS ACROSS EIGHT COMMUNITIES, WHAT WERE THE RITUALS, CEREMONIES, OR MOMENTS OF DAILY LIFE THAT STOPPED YOU COMPLETELY THE THINGS THAT FELT IMPOSSIBLE TO FULLY ABSORB IN THE MOMENT? 02
MASTERPIECE
There were many moments that were difficult to fully absorb while they were happening, but if I had to choose one experience that stayed with me most, it would probably be witnessing a donga stick fight with the Suri during our first trip. Donga is a competitive stick-fighting tradition between men from different villages within the same tribe. Calling it a sporting event almost feels too simple because the atmosphere around it is extraordinary. Hundreds of people gather in an open field, everyone surrounds the fighters, there is excitement everywhere, and matches are announced by men firing AK-47s into the air. Then the fighting begins. The men strike each other incredibly hard using long sticks while defending themselves with small shields. They wear protective coverings made from plants on their heads and shins because injuries are common and the strikes are powerful enough to cause serious damage. ON THE VERY FIRST NIGHT OF YOUR 2022 TRIP, YOU ENTERED THE MURSI CAMP HOURS AFTER A MAN HAD KILLED ANOTHER IN AN ACT OF REVENGE - AN ACT ELEVEN YEARS IN THE MAKING, AND ONE THAT A VILLAGE ELDER’S PEACE NEGOTIATION HAD TRIED TO PREVENT. WHAT DOES AN EXPERIENCE LIKE THAT, ARRIVING INTO THAT SPECIFIC ATMOSPHERE ON YOUR FIRST NIGHT, DO TO THE WAY YOU APPROACH EVERYTHING THAT FOLLOWS? When we arrived at the Mursi camp during our first expedition, we learned that a man had been killed earlier that same evening. As it was explained to us, the story actually began more than a decade earlier. The man who had been killed had previously killed another man’s brother many years before. Traditionally, situations like this can sometimes be resolved through negotiations led by village elders, where compensation is agreed upon between families often involving cattle or other forms of restitution - and once an agreement is reached, the conflict is considered resolved and should not continue. In this case, we were told that process never happened. So more than a decade later, the revenge finally came. What struck me was not simply the violence itself, but the time scale. The idea that something could remain unresolved for eleven years and still shape people’s lives so profoundly was difficult to comprehend coming from my own cultural background. Arriving into that atmosphere on our first night changed the way I approached everything afterward. It reminded me very quickly that we were not visiting some romanticized or frozen world - we were entering
054
functioning societies with their own systems of justice, conflict, politics, grief, and social structures, many of which operated very differently from what I was used to. At the same time, it also made me realize that we were observers rather than participants. These social structures governed life within the community itself; we were outsiders being allowed to witness them. IN MAY 2024, YOU WITNESSED THE SHOOTING DEATH OF SPANISH PHOTOGRAPHER AND GUIDE TONY ESPADAS - SOMEONE WHO HAD DEVOTED HIMSELF TO THOSE COMMUNITIES AND WAS BELOVED BY THEM. THAT IS A TRAUMA OF AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ORDER. HOW DO YOU CARRY THAT, AND DO YOU BELIEVE IT HAS FOUND ITS WAY INTO THE WORK IN WAYS YOU MAY NOT HAVE FULLY INTENDED? That day was certainly a shock because events took a turn that none of us could have imagined and resulted in us witnessing the aftermath of a shooting. At the same time, I think it is important to emphasize that this was not normal. Incidents like this are extraordinarily rare, and the communities themselves understand that guides, visitors, and expeditions are important relationships that have existed for many years. Everyone was shocked not only us. The response was immediate. The Ethiopian authorities brought in the army quickly, moved us to safety, and began pursuing those responsible almost immediately. To be honest, though, the emotional experience was strange. This happened the day after the extremely difficult cattle sacrifice ceremony I mentioned earlier, and I think by that point I was already emotionally exhausted. During the event itself, we were also physically removed from what happened - we were several vehicles behind, so while people who were directly involved were understandably deeply shaken, our experience was more like witnessing a situation unfolding rather than being inside it. TWO FURTHER PAINTINGS FROM THIS SERIES - REBUILDING THE HOME AND ARJAN ARBORO OF THE ARBORI TRIBE - HAVE ALSO RECEIVED MAJOR AWARDS. BOTH TITLES SUGGEST VERY DIFFERENT PAINTERLY INTENTIONS: ONE COMMUNAL AND ACTIVE, ONE SINGULAR AND STILL. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT EACH OF THOSE WORKS WAS TRYING TO DO, AND WHY YOU THINK THEY HAVE CONNECTED SO STRONGLY WITH AUDIENCES? Rebuilding the Home and Arjan Arboro of the Arbore Tribe were the first two major paintings I completed from the series. Both are 40 by 30

inches, both depict members of the Arbore tribe, and both come from the same village, which is one reason I think of them as companion pieces. They were also the first works from the project that received significant recognition, and at the time I felt they were the strongest paintings I had ever made. I was extremely proud of them. Rebuilding the Home focuses on a young girl carrying strips of tree bark. What makes the scene meaningful is the purpose behind it. The homes in the village are built from natural materials that gradually deteriorate and must be rebuilt every eight to ten years. The bark she is carrying is used to bind and secure the new structure together. So although the painting appears simple at first glance, it is really about renewal, continuity, and the work required to sustain everyday life. The scene was painted from an early morning moment, around 6:30 a.m., when the light had a distinctive greenish quality that I found incredibly beautiful. I wanted the painting to feel quiet and purposeful, reflecting the rhythm of daily life rather than a dramatic event. Arjan Arboro of the Arbore Tribe had a very different goal. Arjan was an incredibly striking individual. He wore a bright yellow tunic unlike anything I saw on anyone else, and he seemed to possess a strong personal sense of style and presence. His face immediately caught my attention, but I didn’t want to paint him as an isolated portrait. YOU PAINTED PEOPLE AND LANDSCAPES DIRECTLY FROM LIFE IN THE FIELD, AND ALSO PHOTOGRAPHED SUBJECTS TO DEVELOP LARGER, MORE COMPLEX WORKS IN THE STUDIO. THAT IS A VERY DELIBERATE TWOTRACK PROCESS. WHAT DOES THE DIRECT, EN PLEIN AIR ENCOUNTER GIVE THE PAINT THAT NO PHOTOGRAPH - HOWEVER GOOD - CAN FULLY CARRY BACK? Painting from life is a very special process, and in my opinion it gives something to a work that is difficult to achieve any other way. In an ideal world, if I could somehow persuade people to hold complex poses for a hundred and twenty hours, I would paint everything from life. But of course that isn’t possible. Many of the scenes that interested me in the Omo Valley were fleeting moments involving multiple figures, movement, and events that unfold over seconds rather than hours. A donga stick fight, fishermen working from boats, ceremonies, dances-those are situations where photography becomes essential. For more intimate subjects, however, especially portraits, painting from life offers something entirely different. You spend time with the person. You observe them beyond a single expression.

06 Watching the Dance. 36x24 inches. Oil on Linen

I have developed a deep affection for the people I met there, and I certainly feel that I still have much more to paint from the material I gathered during my expeditions. There are paintings I have not yet begun, stories I have not yet told, and ideas I am still excited to explore. At the same time, I don’t think of myself as an Omo Valley painter. What really interests me is not a single place but the experience of encountering cultures different from my own and trying to understand them through painting. The Omo Valley happens to be one expression of that interest.
04 06
05 07
You watch subtle changes in posture, mood, and light. The experience becomes less about recording appearance and more about understanding presence. I feel this even more strongly when it comes to landscapes. For me, landscapes are best painted directly from life because the environment is constantly changing. During a single painting session, the light may shift completely, shadows move, clouds arrive, people appear and disappear from the scene. In one sense that is a challenge, because the subject never sits still. But it is also an opportunity because you begin noticing relationships and moments that no photograph would ever show you. YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THIS SUBJECT AS AN OBSESSION - YOU HAVE PLANS FOR MORE TRIPS, AND REFERENCE MATERIAL YOU HAVEN’T YET TOUCHED. BUT OBSESSION IN AN ARTIST CAN MEAN MANY THINGS. IS THIS A PROJECT WITH AN END, OR HAVE THE OMO VALLEY TRIBES BECOME SOMETHING CLOSER TO A LIFELONG INQUIRY? The Omo Valley tribes are special to me because they represent cultures with incredibly deep histories and traditions that have endured for a very long time. Ethiopia itself occupies a remarkable place in the story of human history and human evolution, which only adds to the sense that you are encountering something profoundly ancient.
SOMEONE WALKS INTO A GALLERY AND STANDS IN FRONT OF ONE OF THESE PAINTINGS. THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE OMO VALLEY, NOTHING ABOUT THE TRIBES, NOTHING ABOUT WHAT IT COST YOU TO BE THERE. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO HAPPEN IN THAT PERSON IN THE THIRTY SECONDS THEY SPEND LOOKING - AND WHAT WOULD IT MEAN TO YOU IF IT DID? If somebody stands in front of one of these paintings and encounters a culture they have never thought about before, I hope the work creates a sense of wonder and curiosity. I hope it makes them want to learn more, ask questions, read about the people depicted, or perhaps even visit these places themselves. For me, these paintings are ultimately a celebration of the incredible variety of human experience. Across the world, people have developed countless ways of living, believing, building communities, and understanding their place in the world. I find that diversity endlessly fascinating. I think we live in a time when many parts of the world are becoming increasingly interconnected and, in some ways, more culturally homogeneous. While there are many positive aspects to that, I also believe there is value in recognizing, preserving, and appreciating traditions that have developed along different paths. If a viewer spends thirty seconds with one of my paintings and leaves feeling a little more curious about people unlike themselves, then I would consider the painting successful. Pavel Sokov’s paintings from the Ethiopian Tribes series are available through the artist directly at pavelsokov.com. His Best in Show work will be featured at Sotheby’s New York on July 17th as part of the Art Renewal Center’s 17th Annual Salon auction.

Luxury has always been defined by movement. From grand ocean liners and private railway carriages to the world’s01most exclusive automobiles, each era has sought to elevate travel beyond transportation and transform it into an experience. Bombardier and ELIE SAAB are bringing that philosophy to a new frontier with a collaboration that reimagines private aviation through the lens of haute couture. Unveiled in Monaco during the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the partnership introduces a bespoke cabin concept for Bombardier’s Global 8000 aircraft. The project marks the first collaboration of its kind between the Canadian aviation leader and the internationally renowned fashion and lifestyle house, creating an environment where engineering excellence and refined design coexist at 50,000 feet. While private aviation has traditionally focused on performance, range, and technology, expectations among ultra-high-net-worth travelers continue to evolve. Increasingly, aircraft are viewed not simply as a means of transportation but as extensions of personal lifestyle. Clients who commission private residences, collect art, and invest in bespoke interiors now seek the same level of individuality and craftsmanship in the way they travel. The Global 8000 provides the ideal canvas for such an ambition. Already recognized as one of the most advanced business aircraft in development, the jet combines exceptional speed, range, and performance with a cabin designed for
long-haul comfort. Yet the collaboration with ELIE SAAB introduces an entirely new dimension to the onboard experience. Drawing on decades of expertise in haute couture, interior design, and luxury living, ELIE SAAB approached the aircraft as it would a private residence. Rather than focusing on decorative embellishment, the design language centers on proportion, materiality, and atmosphere. The result is a space that feels calm, sophisticated, and timeless. Natural light plays a central role throughout the cabin, illuminating fluid architectural lines and carefully selected materials that create warmth without excess. A restrained palette enhances the sense of openness, while subtle detailing reinforces the feeling of craftsmanship that has become synonymous with the ELIE SAAB name. At the heart of the design sits a generous lounge area intended to encourage relaxation and connection. More than simply a seating arrangement, the space reflects the growing importance of wellbeing in luxury travel. The environment has been conceived to feel intuitive and residential, creating a sense of comfort that allows passengers to transition seamlessly between work, leisure, and rest. The project also highlights the increasingly blurred boundaries between luxury sectors. Over the past decade, fashion houses have expanded well beyond clothing, entering fields ranging from hospitality and residential developments to furniture and interior design. ELIE SAAB has been

at the forefront of this evolution, steadily building a lifestyle universe that extends its aesthetic philosophy into multiple aspects of everyday living. This collaboration represents a natural continuation of that journey. The aircraft cabin becomes another environment through which the brand can express its vision of contemporary elegance, accompanying clients wherever they travel and ensuring a consistent experience across02 every touchpoint of their lifestyle. Behind the visual simplicity lies a remarkable engineering achievement. Every design decision had to satisfy the rigorous technical, safety, and certification requirements that govern modern aviation. Bombardier’s engineering teams worked closely with ELIE SAAB throughout the process, translating couture-inspired concepts into a fully certifiable aircraft interior without compromising functionality or performance. The result demonstrates that innovation in luxury is no longer limited to technology alone. Increasingly, it lies in the ability to create environments that are emotionally resonant as well as technically sophisticated. In this respect, the Global 8000 cabin represents more than a design exercise; it offers a glimpse into the future of private travel. As luxury consumers continue to seek experiences that feel personal and curated, collaborations such as this are likely to become increasingly influential. Bombardier and ELIE SAAB have redefined what it means to travel well, proving that elegance need not end when the wheels leave the ground. eliesaab.com

01 Gilded obsidian takes centre stage in this new interpretation
A Legacy of Innovation
02 The Santos-Dumont brings a fresh dimension to one of Cartier’s most iconic watch designs
With its flexible metal bracelet, hard stone dial and mechanical manufacture movement, this new version of the Santos-Dumont watch channels the dandyism of Alberto Santos-Dumont, who was known for his singular style and attention to detail. “The new Santos-Dumont emphasizes its resemblance to the original shape, and the bracelet, at once fluid and precious, is an expression of contemporary elegance.” Pierre Rainero, Director of Image, Style and Heritage.
True to the elegance and pioneering spirit of the original, which was created in 1904 to enable aviators to tell the time mid-flight, this model shares the same codes: Roman numerals, visible screws, circular-grained crown and a blue cabochon. A great classic of the design world, it was the first modern watch designed to be worn on the wrist and has now been reinterpreted with vintage accents, bringing together a wide range of skills at the Cartier Manufacture, from the most traditional to the most innovative. The centerpiece of this new LM-size of the Santos-Dumont watch is the dial in gilded obsidian. A feat of gem-cutting, this volcanic stone from Mexico owes its iridescent reflections to tiny air bubbles trapped in the material, making each watch unique. At just 0.3 mm in depth, its delicacy makes it comparable to glass, posing a significant challenge for the Maison’s craftsmen. Once the stone has been cut, it is polished to reveal its stunning radiance. Inspired by the flexibility of the first made-
to-measure metal watch bracelets developed by the Maison back in the 1920s, the yellow gold bracelet of this new Santos-Dumont watch unfolds with infinite delicacy against the skin. This silky-smooth feel is achieved by the refinement of the 1.15 mm-thick links that form the mesh, which is composed of 15 rows for a total of 394 links. All of these elements are machined, finished and assembled at the Manufacture and then each piece of the polished bracelet is attached to the case and clasp. Equipped with the 430 MC hand-wound mechanical manufacture movement, this version of the Santos-Dumont watch comes in two other LM-size models with silvered satin-finish dials with sunray effect, one in yellow gold and the other in platinum. The Santos-Dumont range has also been refreshed with the launch of two new LM-size watches in yellow gold and gold and steel. cartier.com

With the CABARET TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD, A. Lange & Söhne presents a new version of its distinctive, rectangular timepiece, limited to 50 pieces: its case and dial are crafted from 750 honey gold (HONEYGOLD®). The high-precision relief elements on the dial prominently stand out against the black-rhodiumed background, thus providing the timepiece, equipped with a stop-seconds device for the tourbillon, with an artistic three-dimensional effect.
In the new model, a case and dial in 750 honey gold play a starring role. This rare combination of Lange’s exclusive material accounts for the timepiece’s particularly noble personality. Its warm-hued luster contrasts crisply with the blackrhodiumed dial where relief elements can be admired. An aperture at 6 o’clock draws attention to the tourbillon with stop seconds. The upper tourbillon bridge and the top side of the cage are adorned with an elaborate black polish. The black-rhodiumed, honey-gold dial of the CABARET TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD is entirely crafted in the manufacture. It consists of three parts: the main dial as well as two auxiliary dials for the subsidiary seconds and the UP/DOWN powerreserve indicator. Both frames, the scales and the “A. LANGE & SÖHNE” inscription were painstakingly sculpted from the dial material, making them stand out prominently as a relief with a height of 0.15 millimeters. Extreme meticulousness is applied to accomplish the exact shape and sharply chiseled contours of all elements. The precise detailing of all angles and edges sets a formidable challenge even to the most experienced finishers.
In a next step, the three dial parts are blackrhodiumed. Subsequently, the finishers carefully polish the raised elements by hand, shining the spotlight on the re-emerging luster of the honey gold, radiant against the dark background. Then, the finely polished Roman numerals III, IX, XII, the six lozenge-shaped hour appliques and the frame for the outsize date are separately integrated in the dial. Finally, the auxiliary dials are connected with the main dial from the back. The entire process, from the first to the last step, takes several weeks. An aperture in the dial affords a captivating view of the tourbillon. The artisanal virtuosity manifests itself especially in the eye-catching upper tourbillon bridge and the top side of the cage that are decorated with one of the most elaborate finishing techniques: black polish. It involves using special abrasive pastes and uniformly sliding the workpiece with just the right pressure across a tin plate by hand until the surface reflects the light like a mirror when viewed from a certain angle. And from another perspective, it has a jet-black sheen. All the acute internal angles of the cage are polished: this also requires extreme meticulousness and experience.

The CABARET TOURBILLON is a milestone in the history of precision watchmaking. It was with this watch that A. Lange & Söhne introduced the world’s first stop seconds for the tourbillon in 2008. Since then, several of the manufacture’s models have been equipped with this useful additional function. The novelty in honey gold now continues this tradition. The then-patented Lange mechanism allows stopping the tourbillon at any time with an arresting spring, regardless of the momentary positions of the balance and the cage. Only now is it possible to set the watch with one-second accuracy. While this function is standard in conventional mechanical watches, it remained an unresolved matter in tourbillon watches for a long time. The A. Lange & Söhne engineers presented the elusive solution in 2008. A glance through the sapphire-crystal caseback unveils the technical intricacy and mechanical beauty of the manually wound caliber L042.1. It is composed of 370 parts, of which no fewer than 84 are integrated in the filigreed tourbillon, weighing only approximately a quarter of a gram. It has a twin mainspring barrel that delivers a substantial power reserve of 120 hours while the balance spring operates at a frequency of 21,600 semioscillations per hour.
Measuring 22.3 by 32.6 millimeters, the large form movement of the CABARET TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD is tailored to the shape of the case. It is based on the rectangular CABARET model, which, since its launch in 1997, has stood for extravagance as well as for a distinctive movement philosophy. As is the case with round A. Lange & Söhne movements, the wheel train of the manufacture caliber L042.1 is also mounted on a three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver and decorated with Glashütte ribbing. Further typical hallmarks include the manually engraved tourbillon cock and intermediate-wheel cock, screwed gold chatons, blued screws and the ratchet wheel that is embellished with solarization. The case measures 29.5 by 39.2 millimeters and 10.3 millimeters in height. The refined color composition of a warm-hued, resplendent honey-gold case and a black-rhodiumed dial is complemented by the dark-brown alligator leather strap secured with a honey-gold prong buckle. The CABARET TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD is the 18th Lange watch crafted in honey gold. In mid-May 2026, it will be introduced during the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este held on the shores of Lake Como.

Silk and Time Seiko Presage draws inspiration from one of Japan’s most celebrated textile traditions, transforming the beauty of Tomioka silk into a timepiece that honors craftsmanship, culture, and mechanical watchmaking. 01
The finest luxury objects often tell stories that extend far beyond their immediate function. For Seiko, that story frequently begins with Japanese craftsmanship and cultural heritage. The latest addition to the Presage Classic Series continues that tradition, drawing inspiration from Tomioka silk, one of Japan’s most celebrated textile legacies. Produced in the region surrounding the historic Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma Prefecture, Tomioka silk has long been prized for its exceptional quality. Distinguished by its smooth texture, subtle sheen, and elegant drape, the material represents generations of expertise passed down through skilled artisans. The silk mill itself occupies a significant place in Japanese history, having served as the center of the nation’s silk industry since its establishment in 1872. Today, the site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a symbol of Japan’s industrial and cultural development. Seiko has translated the character of the silk itself into the design of the watch. The result is a timepiece whose dial captures the flowing texture and luminous quality of finely woven Tomioka silk.
At first glance, the effect is subtle. Under changing light, however, intricate dial patterns reveal themselves through delicate reflections that mimic the movement of silk fabric. The surface appears to shift and ripple, creating a sense of depth that rewards closer inspection. It is an approach that reflects a distinctly Japanese design philosophy, where beauty often emerges gradually through observation rather than immediate spectacle. Limited to just 2,000 pieces, the dial takes inspiration from the pristine whiteness of a rare silkworm variety cultivated in Gunma Prefecture and is enhanced with a pearl-like finish that creates a refined, almost luminous glow. Paired with a pink-gold-colored case and a rich brown leather strap inspired by the iconic red-brick architecture of the Tomioka Silk Mill, the watch balances warmth, elegance, and historical reference with remarkable restraint. Alongside the limited edition, Seiko introduces three regular-production models that continue the exploration of traditional Japanese colors. The first, shironeri, presents a pure and immaculate white. The second, wakatake-iro, evokes
the vitality of young bamboo. The third, sakura-iro, captures the delicate pink of cherry blossoms, a color that has occupied a special place in Japanese art and design for centuries. Beyond their visual appeal, the watches showcase the technical expertise for which the Presage collection has become known. Each model houses Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R51 movement, offering a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. The collection is presented in a versatile 38mm case size, reinforcing its classic proportions and timeless character. Perhaps most significantly, the collection extends beyond design itself. Seiko has announced that a portion of proceeds will support the Tomioka Silk Promotion Organization, helping preserve and promote the region’s centuries-old silk-making tradition for future generations. The Seiko Presage is available at the Seiko Boutique at City Centre Bahrain and the BJC store in Manama. For more information, please call 17008989. bjc.com.bh

Elegant Echoes
For his Summer 2026 debut at Dior, Jonathan Anderson reimagines heritage, formality, and aristocratic dressing through a softer, more instinctive lens. For Summer 2026, Dior turns toward history for its inspiration. Presented inside a space inspired by Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie, Jonathan Anderson’s first collection for the House draws together art, literature, and fashion in a study of elegance shaped by spontaneity rather than strict formality. The collection moves fluidly between centuries. Tailcoats, waistcoats, Donegal tweeds, and regimental ties are reworked alongside signatures such as the Bar jacket, creating a wardrobe that feels both aristocratic and unexpectedly youthful. There is structure here, but also softness; an ease that allows heritage pieces to feel personal rather than ceremonial. Throughout the collection, Anderson references
the objects and symbols that define Dior’s cultural memory. Rococo-inspired embroideries, roses, and Diorette charms sit beside literary nods ranging from Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Even the iconic Lady Dior is transformed through artist Sheila Hicks’ tactile reinterpretation in pure linen. Underlying the collection is a broader meditation on style itself: not as perfection, but as instinct. Clothes become tools for transformation, allowing the wearer to shift between eras, identities, and moods with confidence and imagination. dior.com

Structure, softened Bottega Veneta’s Winter 2026 collection explores the tension between restraint and sensuality through a distinctly Milanese lens.
Milan remains at the heart of Bottega Veneta’s Winter 2026 collection, where structure and softness exist in constant dialogue. Creative Director Matthieu Blazy draws from the city’s contrasts: brutalist architecture against intimate interiors, austerity softened by warmth and craftsmanship. This season, classic daywear archetypes are reworked with fluidity and ease. Sharp tailoring gives way to unexpected gestures of flamboyance, while silhouettes move between masculine and feminine references with quiet confidence. There are echoes of nostalgia throughout: floral accents, opera-ready elegance, and details that feel inherited rather than designed. Texture plays a central role across the collection. Intricate handcraft techniques recreate fur-like surfaces through silk, knitting, and technical fibres, extending across garments, jewellery, and footwear. The mood deepens into something more theatrical, with references to Maria Callas and Pier Paolo Pasolini that evoke radical creativity, romance and Italian cultural memory. At its core, the collection celebrates collective expression through the collaboration of heart, mind, and hand. bottegaveneta.com

Icon Reimagined 01
Nearly three decades after its initial 1997 debut, FENDI’s original “It-Bag” was reframed not just as a seasonal fashion accessory, but as a historic design object.
During Milano Design Week, the lines between fine art, interior design, and high fashion blur completely. FENDI seized this moment to present a striking installation at its Palazzo FENDI Milano boutique: the unveiling of the Baguette 26424 Re-Edition. The number 26424 holds a special significance for fashion historians-it represents the original archival factory code assigned to the Baguette when Silvia Venturini Fendi first conceived its iconic under-the-arm silhouette. For this project, FENDI’s creative direction introduced structural updates to merge heritage with modern wearability. The Baguette 26424 Re-Edition features a softer, more relaxed construction that molds seamlessly against the body and elongated shoulder straps designed to
enhance comfort and functional fluid movement. The collection spans twenty distinct, archivalminded designs, transforming each bag into a tactile canvas. Artisans elevated the signature silhouette using intricate, time-honored embroidery techniques, such as traditional Aari and Zardozi work. Embellished with a vibrant mix of heavy sequins, beads, and mirror fragments, individual pieces required upwards of 70 hours of manual craftsmanship and tens of thousands of hand-applied beads to complete. To anchor the release firmly within Milano Design Week, six exclusive iterations were dedicated entirely to the city of Milan, while the remaining 14 styles began a highly anticipated global tour across major fashion hubs, including Shanghai and New York. The presentation space at Palazzo FENDI
mirrored the philosophy of a high-end art exhibition. Rather than resting on traditional retail shelving, each Baguette 26424 arrived enclosed within custom-designed, industrial wooden crates reminiscent of fine art transport cases. Complete with raw stencil lettering, special Re-Edition metal tags, and bound securely with FENDI’s signature yellow canvas utility belts, the packaging treated the bags like precious heirlooms. By treating the Baguette as a living canvas for craft and self-expression, FENDI delivered a powerful message during Milan’s busiest creative week: true design longevity isn’t about repeating the past-it’s about re-editing it for the future. fendi.com

ESCAPE
TUMI’s Spring 2026 collection channels the warmth, color, and slower rhythm of Mediterranean travel, celebrating a season defined by effortless escape. For Spring 2026, TUMI steps away from the pace of transit and into something more immersive. Inspired by the Mediterranean coastline, from the terracotta warmth of seaside villages to the deep blue horizon where sky meets sea, the brand’s latest collection captures travel not simply as movement, but as atmosphere. Photographed across Mallorca’s Villa Fortaleza and Cala San Vicente, the “Mediterranean Escape” campaign introduces a softer, more expressive side of TUMI. The collection retains the brand’s signature precision and functionality, while embracing a more relaxed visual language rooted in texture, color, and sensory detail.
At the center of the collection is the iconic 19 Degree line, reimagined in destination-inspired shades including thyme green, washed yellow, pink clay, and Horizon Blue. Sculptural metallic silhouettes take on a sun-faded softness, while new front-access luggage designs bring added practicality to modern travel. Across the wider collection, woven raffiainspired materials introduce warmth and tactility to backpacks, shoulder bags, and travel essentials designed to move effortlessly between city life and vacation settings. The Mediterranean influence continues through smaller details. Olive and lemon-inspired charms reference open-air markets and Amalfi Coast groves,
while new prints across Voyageur, Tegra-Lite™, Nassau, and Belden collections evoke the layered colors and rhythms of coastal living. Throughout, the emphasis remains on ease: objects designed not only to perform, but to accompany experience. For Creative Director Victor Sanz, the collection reflects a more intentional philosophy of travel, one shaped by emotion and memory as much as destination. That perspective extends into the campaign itself, which presents travel as an act of immersion rather than escape: slower, richer, and fully sensory. tumi.com

SUPREME MIAMI, USA In the heart of Miami’s vibrant Design District, Supreme’s flagship store stands as a striking example of contemporary retail design. Occupying a 3,735-square-foot former concrete-frame building at 45 NE 41st Street, the space is a masterclass in brutalist-inspired minimalism, thoughtfully reimagined by Brinkworth in collaboration with Neil Logan and the Wilson Brothers. The store’s centerpiece is a colossal, horseshoe-shaped wooden skate bowl. Suspended overhead, it forms a dramatic visual canopy above the retail floor in a playful nod to the brand’s skateboarding roots. Site-specific murals and installations by Mark Gonzales, Rita Ackermann, Harmony Korine, and Nate Lowman give the interior a gallery-like feel, merging street culture with high-concept art. Each piece is carefully integrated into the architecture, creating a dynamic environment where skate culture, fashion, and art converge. On the outside, a custom perforated panel system wraps the building, diffusing natural light during the day and glowing from within at night. supreme.com

Timeless St. Petersburg As daylight lingers long past midnight, St. Petersburg’s palaces, theatres, cathedrals, and canals reveal the enduring legacy of Russia’s capital. Durrah visits one of the world’s most elegant and atmospheric cities.
St. Petersburg reveals its imperial character most clearly during the White Nights, when the Neva reflects palace façades, cathedral domes, and granite embankments beneath a sky that never fully settles into darkness. Built on forty-two islands and connected by more than three hundred bridges, the city was designed around water, and that structure still shapes how it is experienced today. Rivers and canals remain the most revealing way to understand its scale, whether from a private boat gliding beneath the bridges or from the embankments as evening stretches long past midnight. While the museum now holds more than three million objects, the rooms that stay with you are the ones that still feel connected to the lives once lived there. The Malachite Room sits under green stone columns, the Military Gallery lines its walls with portraits of generals who defeated Napoleon, and Nicholas II’s private library offers a quieter view of the last tsar away from public life. Without the crowds, the Jordan Staircase feels closer to how it was originally used, as an entrance built to impress visiting dignitaries rather than move visitors through a museum. A short walk leads to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, built on the site of Alexander II’s assassination. Its colourful domes dominate the skyline, but the interior leaves an even stronger impression. More than 7,500 square metres of mosaics cover walls, arches, and ceilings, creating an extraordinary richness of detail that changes with the light. Evening is the ideal time to visit, when the colours deepen and the crowds begin to thin.
Nearby, St. Isaac’s Cathedral rises above the skyline beneath a gilded dome visible from across the city. Climbing its colonnade remains a defining St. Petersburg experience, particularly during the White Nights. From this vantage point, the city unfolds in a single, uninterrupted panorama that encompasses the Neva River, the Winter Palace, and the slender spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral. That spire draws the eye toward Hare Island and the Peter and Paul Fortress, where Peter the Great founded the city in 1703. Today, the historic citadel houses the imperial burial vaults of the Romanov dynasty alongside the Trubetskoy Bastion, the former prison where Russia’s political dissidents were once held. No visit is complete without leaving the city centre for Peterhof. The hydrofoil from the Hermitage pier is the most elegant approach, crossing the Gulf of Finland and revealing the palace from the same perspective once reserved for foreign ambassadors. Once you arrive, the massive Lower Park comfortably fills an entire day with its elegant formal gardens, tree-lined walkways, pavilions, and the famous fountains of the Grand Cascade stretching all the way to the sea. Peterhof’s greatest achievement is its engineering, with fountains that operate through gravity-fed water pressure much as Peter the Great intended three centuries ago. The journey to Pushkin passes through Soviet-era apartment districts before Catherine Palace suddenly appears in blue, white, and gold, its façade stretching for nearly three hundred metres. That contrast only heightens the sense of arrival, which continues through
mirrored halls, gilded salons, and ceremonial chambers before culminating in the Amber Room. Famous as much for its disappearance during the Second World War as for its beauty, the room was unveiled again in 2003 after decades of reconstruction. A private car with a knowledgeable guide adds valuable context along the way, linking the palace to the siege of Leningrad and the city’s turbulent twentieth century. Back in St. Petersburg, the Yusupov Palace offers a more intimate view of aristocratic life. Its private theatre is one of the most beautiful interiors in the city, while its association with Rasputin’s murder continues to attract fascination more than a century later. Nearby, the Fabergé Museum houses the finest collection of Imperial Easter Eggs in the world. Visitors are often surprised by their scale. These are intricate and deeply personal objects whose craftsmanship reveals itself through close inspection rather than grandeur. An evening at the Mariinsky Theatre provides the perfect conclusion to a day spent among palaces. Opened in 1860, it is one of the great homes of ballet and opera, and arriving early is part of the experience. Chandeliers illuminate the auditorium long before the curtain rises, and the audience itself becomes part of the theatre’s enduring ritual. Behind the scenes, workshops still preserve techniques passed down through generations of costume makers and stage craftsmen. After midnight, attention turns to the river as boats gather along the Neva to witness the city’s bridges rise in sequence. A private cruise offers the

ideal perspective, letting you watch the Palace and Trinity bridges lift against the pale northern sky. From the water, the historic embankments, imperial palaces, and church towers drift past in near silence, revealing St. Petersburg more completely than any vantage point on land. Travellers with more time should venture beyond the main circuit. Pavlovsk rewards visitors with neoclassical elegance and one of Europe’s finest landscape parks, while Gatchina offers a markedly different atmosphere, defined by lakes, towers, and a palace whose character feels closer to an English country estate than a Russian residence. In nearby Strelna, the restored Konstantinovsky Palace highlights how imperial architecture continues to serve a contemporary purpose, functioning today as the National Congress Palace and a venue for international summits. St. Petersburg rewards those willing to move beyond a checklist of landmarks. Its palaces, cathedrals, theatres, and waterways form a coherent whole shaped by imperial ambition and centuries of cultural patronage. During the White Nights, when daylight lingers and the city remains active long after midnight, that vision feels particularly vivid. History, architecture, and atmosphere exist here in unusual balance, creating one of the world’s most distinctive and enduring urban experiences.

“The first concorso d’eleganza in Rome in 60 years,
Anantara Concorso Roma turned Rome into a curated open-air experience.” 01 Rare and historic Italian automobiles on display during the inaugural Anantara Concorso Roma
01
Italian Icons RETURN There are few places better suited to celebrate Italian automotive history than Rome. More than 70 historic Italian automobile recently gathered in the capital for the inaugural Anantara Concorso Roma, bringing together some of the country’s most celebrated marques. For the first time in more than 60 years, Rome once again played host to a concours d’eleganza, providing a fitting setting for cars that have become a defining part of Italy’s national identity.
Presented by UBS and hosted at the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel, the event welcomed collectors, enthusiasts, and visitors from around the world for a celebration of Italian automotive design. Luxury vehicles spanning almost a century were on display, charting the evolution of Italian styling from the 1920s to the present day. Under the sharp eye of the judging panel, a selection of masterpieces from Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari, and Lamborghini competed for top honors across 16 classes. The concours unfolded across Casina Valadier and Piazza Bucharest in Villa Borghese, where rows of historic cars overlooked one of Europe’s most recognisable cityscapes. Rather than being confined to a convention centre or exhibition hall, the event became part of the city, inviting visitors
to experience Italian motoring heritage against a backdrop of Roman history and culture. Throughout the weekend, owners and guests moved between concours displays, hospitality events, and some of the capital’s most celebrated landmarks, enjoying an experience that captured the elegance and heritage of the occasion. Guided by the spirit of La Dolce Vita delle Automobili, the event combined remarkable cars with exceptional hospitality and the understated charm that defines Italian life. Among the many highlights was the 1932 Maserati V4 Sport Zagato, which was awarded Best of Show. Nicknamed the “Sedici Cilindri,” this rare icon is famous for its four-litre, 16-cylinder engine and a legendary 10-kilometer world speed record set in 1929. Its appearance at Anantara Concorso Roma marked the car’s first return to Rome
in almost 90 years, providing one of the most memorable moments of the weekend. The event also opened its doors to the public, giving locals and visitors the chance to see cars that are usually kept in museums or private collections. For many, it was a rare opportunity to experience Italy’s automotive history up close and to take in details that are normally seen only at a distance. As the sun set over Villa Borghese on the final day of the event, the cars may have been the centre of attention, but they were only part of the story. The setting and atmosphere created a weekend that was uniquely Italian, bringing together automotive excellence and the culture that has surrounded it for generations. anantaraconcorsoroma.com

A Luxury SUV for EVERY JOURNEY For more than 25 years, the Cadillac Escalade has been one of the most recognisable SUVs in the world, known for its imposing presence and industry-leading technology. Durrah recently took a closer look at the latest lineup, which extends from traditional V8 models through to fully electric variants, without losing the iconic Escalade identity.
Driving across the Escalade range feels consistently classy and controlled with a clear character that carries through every variant. Safety and driver assistance features support this, while connectivity systems help keep navigation, media, and communication close at hand. HD Surround Vision, Automatic Emergency Braking, and parking assistance features quietly add confidence, especially in tighter city driving and on longer journeys. Space and practicality are two of the Escalade’s greatest strengths. Seating is generous across all rows, quality materials are used throughout the cabin, and the intuitive layout keeps controls and screens easy to access without taking your eyes off the road. The tech in this SUV was a clear highlight during our test drive in Dubai. Google Built-In sits at the centre of the infotainment system, bringing navigation and apps together in one place, while the available audio systems add depth and clarity on longer drives. Across the range, the technology feels intuitive to use, with key information presented clearly so drivers can access what they need without distraction. The result is an interior that feels modern and well equipped, without adding unnecessary complexity. The Escalade Platinum Luxury leans into the classic side of the lineup. Its exterior has a clean, upscale profile, and the interior is thoughtfully put together, with heated, ventilated, and massaging seats. Driven by a 420‑horsepower V8, this variant moves with a smooth, deliberate ease the moment you ease into the throttle. What stood out during our test drive was how quiet the cabin is. The usual
mix of wind and road noise is so muted that you can stay focused on the drive or enjoy the sound system without anything competing for your attention. The Escalade Sport brings a more expressive personality to the lineup, with styling that gives it a noticeably more assertive presence. The handling in this variant felt more responsive, delivering a more engaging drive that set it apart from the other trims we tested. The steering is light and precise, and the suspension responds well over uneven surfaces, so the cabin feels settled even when the road doesn’t. The Escalade‑V sits at the top of the V8 lineup, powered by a hand‑built supercharged V8 that produces 682 horsepower in V‑Mode. It delivers strong acceleration, supported by upgraded suspension and braking systems that give you a clearer sense of control over the power under the bonnet. Inside, the performance‑centric cockpit is built for drivers who value quality and control, giving the cabin a more purposeful feel As Cadillac’s all‑electric flagship, the ESCALADE IQ introduces a quieter driving experience. Electric power delivers strong performance in Velocity Max mode, producing up to 750 hp and 1,064 Nm of torque, while the overall drive feels smoother and more seamless. Four‑wheel steering helps in tighter streets, and Arrival Mode makes parking this sizable SUV much easier. Inside the IQ, the focus shifts to openness and usability. The cabin layout gives passengers more space to settle in, and the screens and controls are positioned clearly across the front of the interior. Everything feels organised and easy to reach without adding clutter to the space. An available 36‑speaker
AKG Studio Audio System with Dolby Atmos adds another layer to the experience, delivering impressive sound quality throughout the cabin. Building on this, the ESCALADE IQL adds additional length to increase rear passenger and luggage space. The result is a more open rear cabin with greater room to move, supported by executive seating, power‑assisted doors, and the same technology found across the electric range. The added space is ideal for longer journeys, giving rear passengers more room. The Escalade lineup has developed to give each model its own direction while still feeling part of the same family. The Platinum Luxury focuses on comfort and refinement, the Sport introduces a more expressive and energetic feel, and the Escalade-V delivers stronger performance. The all‑electric IQ and IQL approach the Escalade from a different angle, but the experience remains familiar. Their quieter, more immediate power delivery changes the way the SUV moves, but the sense of space and the relaxed posture on the road stay firmly in place. After spending time with the full range in Dubai, what stood out most was how naturally these differences fit together. Each model brings its own character, but they all deliver a driving experience that stays composed no matter the conditions. Whether the power comes from a V8 or an electric motor, every version feels like a continuation of the identity that has shaped the Escalade for over two decades. cadillacarabia.com

01 The new Maserati GranTurismo returns with a refined exterior styling 02 The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged Nettuno V6 engine delivers a top speed of more than 320 km/h
01
Legacy in Motion
A century after unveiling the iconic Trident logo, Maserati is once again shifting perceptions with a refreshed line-up that sharpens its grand touring identity across petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrains. The updated GranTurismo, GranCabrio, and Grecale introduce revisions to design, performance and technology while preserving the qualities that have defined the brand for generations.
“For a company celebrating 100 years of the Trident, the easy choice would have been to look back.”
02
The updates also bring Maserati’s latest design language across the range, first explored on the trackonly MCXtrema, later adapted for the GT2 Stradale and refined further on the MCPURA. It now appears on the GranTurismo, GranCabrio, and Grecale, giving each model a more assertive character while keeping the proportions that define them. The result is a more connected family of cars, with each model still clearly holding its own identity. Maserati has updated the GranTurismo with redesigned exterior styling, a more refined interior and revisions to its digital interface, while retaining the qualities that have made it the brand’s flagship grand tourer. In Trofeo specification, the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged Nettuno V6 produces 590 hp and 650 Nm of torque, delivering a top speed of more than 320 km/h. All-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension come as standard, allowing the four-seat coupé to balance long-distance comfort with the performance expected of a modern grand tourer.
The GranCabrio follows the same formula in open-top form. It shares the Nettuno V6 and fourseat layout of the GranTurismo, but adds a fabric soft top that changes the character of the drive without altering its intent. Features such as the Air Neck warmer extend usability into cooler conditions, making it more than a fair-weather convertible. In Trofeo form, it matches the coupé with 590 hp, combining strong performance with everyday flexibility. Electric power now plays an equally important role across the range through Maserati’s Folgore models. The GranTurismo Folgore uses an 800-volt architecture with three electric motors, producing 760 hp and offering a driving range of more than 540 km. The GranCabrio Folgore brings the same technology to an open-top format and becomes the first fully electric cabriolet in its segment. Rather than separating electric models from the rest of the line-up, Maserati treats them as parallel grand tourers, giving customers a choice of powertrain without
changing the underlying character of the cars. The Grecale brings that same approach into the SUV segment. As Maserati’s luxury SUV, it combines space and everyday usability with the performance expected of the marque. The updated model introduces revised styling, a refreshed interior and a new 390-hp V6 derived from the Nettuno engine, alongside existing hybrid and fully electric versions. The Grecale Folgore also benefits from aerodynamic refinements and updated energy management systems that extend range and improve efficiency, strengthening its role within Maserati’s growing electric line-up. For a company celebrating 100 years of the Trident, the easy choice would have been to look back. Instead, Maserati is refining the cars it already knows best and finding new ways to build them for the years ahead. maserati.com

“The Nürburgring remains one of the automotive
world’s toughest benchmarks, with manufacturers using the circuit to measure performance against some of the industry’s fastest road cars.”
June 2026
THE PURSUIT of Precision At the Nürburgring Nordschleife, where every second is hard won, the Mustang GTD Competition has raised the bar once again. Recording a 6:40.835 lap, Ford’s most focused road-going Mustang continues its climb up one of motorsport’s most demanding benchmarks, narrowing the gap to some of Europe’s most established performance cars.
Developed by Ford Racing and Multimatic, the GTD Competition sits at the top of the Mustang range. Drawing directly from the brand’s GT3 racing programme, it channels competitionderived engineering into a road-legal package. Ford President and CEO Jim Farley described the project as transferring motorsport development into a road car, with the Competition variant building further on that direction. Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller completed the lap, placing the car sixth on the Nürburgring Pre-Production and Prototype leaderboard. Around a 20-kilometre circuit with more than 150 corners, performance gains are built
gradually and shaped by small refinements that combine to make a big difference. For the GTD Competition, those refinements include increased output from the supercharged 5.2-litre V8, aerodynamic revisions aimed at improving stability and downforce, new highperformance tyres and weight-saving measures achieved using magnesium and carbon-fibre components. Collectively, they have reduced lap time by more than 11 seconds compared to the car’s previous benchmark. Dirk Müller’s 6:40.835 may have grabbed the headlines, but it was not the only notable time recorded during development. Ford Racing engineer
Steve Thompson later lapped the Nürburgring in 6:49.337, quicker than Müller’s previous production benchmark. The result adds another layer to the GTD Competition’s story, pointing to a car capable of delivering exceptional performance with consistency. The Nürburgring remains one of the automotive world’s toughest benchmarks, with manufacturers using the circuit to measure performance against some of the industry’s fastest road cars. Ford’s latest result moves the GTD Competition further up that order and brings the Mustang into increasingly rare company. ford.com

Beyond Today… Elevating Tomorrow By May Neama
“Securing this asset class requires long-term equity, moving
boardrooms past transactions toward generational restructures.
In the debut column, “Elevating Today,” we established that the value of a brand’s soul lies in authenticity, craft, and experience. Amid fluctuating financial realities, new generations have transitioned luxury from traditional statements into assets, shifting the focus from consumption and possessions, to preserving values. The global luxury landscape is now a massive €1.44 trillion (approx. $1.67 trillion) ecosystem, according to Bain & Company, privileging high-end hospitality, fine dining, and curated experiences. In the GCC, despite a temporary softening of retail traffic, the region remains a strong consuming market. It accounts for an outsized five percent of global spend, is highly financial concentrated, and focuses on high-value acquisitions. Market intelligence reveals that 31% of highspending shoppers are still willing to splurge if a brand’s narrative justifies the premium, while half of global or industry executives are focusing toward customer retention. Also, 94% of toptier shoppers prioritize health as a core part of their daily identity, directly increasing demand for premium, restorative experiences, whereas high-growth alternative asset categories like jewelry are projected to grow four times faster than traditional apparel. Growing annually at 9.2%, the global luxury resale market is valued
”
at $47.1 billion in 2026. This proves that modern collectors view these acquisitions as liquid stores of value, a theme brought to life in this issue’s featured timepieces, A. Lange & Söhne, Cartier.
Commercial equity is created when boardrooms look past flat transactions and receipts to generational restructures, customer retention, and the rapid market migration toward investment-grade alternative assets. Olivier Bron, the CEO of Bloomingdale’s, validates this shift balancing the art and science of retail, “If you are only focused on the transaction, you are losing the purpose of what you are doing. If you are putting a fantastic brand in a single rack at the back of a store with no light, gray carpet, and no customer service, you’ve lost the battle.” As the physical and digital worlds merge, these traditional boundaries are quickly dissolving, and a brand is required to create more than what can be displayed. Luxury today requires foresight, the ability to anticipate evolution and the courage to adapt the model before the market demands it. Value is the deliberate focus on strategy, scarcity, and staying ahead of the curve. I invite you to continue this conversation at mayneama.com/connect
