Ska Brewing has added another option to its Southwest Colorado distribution lineup: Denver’s Lone Tree Brewing Co. According to Ska Sales & Marketing Director Kristen Muraro, the mutual admiration has been, uh, brewing for some time, beginning when the craft breweries served together on the Colorado Brewers Guild Board of Directors. Then, they later bonded over their commonality of a flagship Mexican-style lager – both available in easily transportable cans.

“John Winter of Lone Tree and I always bonded over similar values, beer styles like Mexican-style lagers and the fun atmosphere of both of our breweries,” Muraro said. The collaboration was the idea of one of Ska’s sales reps, who regularly hung out at Lone Tree’s South Denver brewery.

“When sales rep Devin lived near – some say at – Lone Tree Brewing, he was one of Lone Tree’s regulars,” Muraro said.

The two breweries finally consummated the relationship in March 2020, when the Lone Tree team traveled to Durango to brew a collaboration beer at Ska. Unfortunately, before the Lone Tree team even made it home, the collaboration was put on ice due to the pandemic. However, a little thing like social distancing couldn’t keep these breweries apart.

“Fast forward to 2021 and we believe the collaboration was a successful failure,” Dennis Stack, Lone Tree Brewing Sales & Marketing Director, said. “The Southwest region of Colorado was the missing piece of our distribution footprint and the reputation Ska has built in the area made the decision a no-brainer. We are beyond excited to explore this new chapter of distribution.”

To celebrate the partnership, Ska will have a guest keg of Lone Tree’s Vanilla Caramel Amber on tap at its Bodo taproom while supplies last.

The red-hued ale is enhanced with vanilla beans and caramel malt, with no added sugar.

If you miss out on this, not to worry. LaVidaLocal Labor of love Emails are the bane of my existence. I am always behind. But this one, from a vendor up in Moab who was selling my books and zines, caught my eye. The email informed me that because of “sluggish sales” they would no longer be selling my products. I was caught off guard – my books and zines had been selling decently there – so I fired back an email explaining my policy.

I don’t actually depend on the revenue at small independent shops – I make most of my money off internet sales – but it’s important for me to have my work available there. It’s about the love of sharing art and storytelling, not money.

The exchange didn’t go well. The owner of the shop didn’t switch gears and tell me I could still sell my goods at the shop, but the whole thing got me thinking about being a small business owner, and my relationship to money.

When I was younger, I considered money the root of all evil. I worked in the service industry saving my pennies and went climbing when the off season came. My plan was to climb forever.

Well, forever is a long time, and eventually I learned there’s more to this modern life than our outdoor pursuits.

Eventually, I also got tired of toiling in the service industry and making money for someone else. I realized that if I made enough and managed my money wisely, I could have more freedom. Always, though, I promised myself I would make a business that valued art, stories and love over money.

This philosophy actually has made for good business. My competitors in the space of climbing publications are generally large corporations that can’t offer a personal touch to their customer service.

Plus, doing business with small, independent shops ensures that I have places to deliver presentations whenever a book or zine is released. The return on investment (ROI) is relatively low for these events – my events are always free – but it’s hard to place an ROI on what is inside one’s heart. If you win a person over with love, they are likely going to support your work for life. And that can be the foundation of a career.

I’ve been missing a lot of things over the last year, and these in-person events are at the top of the list. Fortunately, with the increase in COVID vaccinations, it appears I’ll be able to do some events this summer. (I will also be doing an online event with Maria’s Bookshop to celebrate the release of Volume 20 of The Climbing Zine on April 20.)

Over this last year, Durango has also seen some major changes to many small businesses and our overall economy. I know many restaurants have struggled, and several have even shut down. As someone whose livelihood depended on the restaurant industry, it is heart breaking to see this happen.

At the same time, the real estate game has become red hot; primarily due to remote working, low interest rates and the rise of urban flight. I was fortunate enough to buy a home with my fiancée, Amber, just before things got really crazy. Everyone around me has been telling me how lucky we were, and I do feel lucky, but I also feel conflicted.

Amber and I are both working-class people, and if we’d waited until now to buy a home, our options would be much more limited. I don’t know what the answer is to this issue – I’m a creative writer not an economist – but I do know that if Durango becomes a place only for the wealthy it will not be the Durango I’ve come to love over the last decade.

Thus, when I voted in our local elections, I voted for the candidates that said affordable housing was a main priority. I also voted against that lodging tax increase. Again, I’d like to see all types of tourists here, and not just wealthy visitors. Making lodging more expensive while also having most of the money go to marketing seems like an idea that was not well thought out at all. (If more money would have been allocated to the arts and to transportation, I perhaps would have considered voting for it.)

Over the years, I’ve learned that money is not the root of all evil. Perhaps the love of money, or greed and money, is the root of all evil, but paying close attention to your finances, and using your money wisely can lead to a better life.

In the big picture, it’s also pretty cool to see that the world’s richest man of my generation, Elon Musk, is a leader in the climate economy. In my mind, it doesn’t get closer to the American Dream than that. Plus, I can see myself actually enjoying hanging out with Elon around a campfire, talking about EVs, cryptocurrency and Mars.

I don’t know exactly what Durango will look like in the future, all I know is I don’t want our town to have that smell. Not the smell of burning coal, though I’m over that, too. Rather that smell of money. You know it when you smell it, and you know it when you see it.

I’ve lived long enough to know that having money does not make a person good or bad. But what they do with that money does in fact define them. I’m committed to this town, and to being a writer and small business owner here; trying my best to create my work with this motto: never for money, always for love.

A literal poop show All of us are so lucky to have Haviland Wildlife area available for our use year round. Unfortunately, many dog owners are not bagging and removing dog waste and it has become disgusting to see all the feces along roads and paths of this lovely area. It’s also a health hazard to people and dogs and drains into the watershed. I spent a morning collecting the waste and got just 50 feet. Please dog owners, show your respect and appreciation for Haviland by being responsible in cleaning up your dog’s waste.

Time to bag plastic once & for all The average American uses 500 plastic bags per year.

Durango’s 2019 population estimate was 18,973. That adds up to more than 9 million plastic bags used in Durango every year, 25,000 per day, or 1,000 per hour… and that excludes tourists.

What’s the harm in plastic bags, you ask? They pollute our rivers, our parks, our city. They degrade into tiny particles that contaminate our water and food chain. They are costly – in the form of higher prices at stores and increased taxes for cleanup. Further, the more money spent on pollution, the less money spent on other public services.

OK, I admit plastic is not necessarily the problem. It’s the throwaway mindset we have fallen into: using a plastic bag for an average of 12 minutes, throwing it away, grabbing a new one for 12 more minutes, throwing it away, again, and again, and again.

That’s why I’m ecstatic to learn of the introduction of HB21-1162 to the state Legislature, which bans use of single-use plastic bags by retail stores and food establishments.

Allow Clarks time, support The recent cartoon that appeared in the Telegraph that disparaged Toh-Atin Gallery and its owners truly disturbed me. This cartoon certainly does not tell the story as I see it.

Toh-Atin, like many Durango area businesses, has suffered setbacks during COVID. Yet, the Clark family has continued to support and raise money for Native American nonprofits to a tune of over $40,000. Much of this money was raised by Toh-Atin customers.

When people voiced concern about The Chief, Jackson and Antonia made time to listen to various complaints and viewpoints. Furthermore, this is not a one-sided situation. Many people believe the Clark family should be able to make the decision about their business, and this includes the right to handle The Chief sign on their terms. Again, all of this happened when the pandemic was creating havoc. The Clarks were trying to keep their doors open and be able to pay their employees. They have not taken a paycheck during these tumultuous times. They have continued to buy products, lent money to artists and weavers who could not afford to buy art supplies or wool to create the products they need to support their families and sadly paid for countless Covid-19related funerals.

Antonia Clark had several meetings with a City Councilor and others who felt The Chief needed to come down.

Additionally, they have talked with numerous tribes to obtain feedback about The Chief. Antonia has told many people who were concerned that they are formulating a plan to

review new art as a possible replacement for The Chief. Yet, the day-to-day business must be handled first.

This sign is on private property, and the owners should have the ability to take their time and deal with this issue as they see appropriate. Being attacked in a local newspaper with a cartoon that does not reflect who the Clark family is does not sit well with many of us who have known the Clark family for years and know their dedication and commitment to Native American families.

We have so many pressing issues in our community that need our attention. We have homelessness, unemployment, the need for affordable housing, food insecurity and the list goes on. I encourage all activists who care about humanity to focus on what’s needed to make our community a place for all to thrive. I believe the Clark family deserves time to deal with their business. Those of us who have run a small business understand that it is not for the weak of heart. It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance. I have the utmost confidence that the Clark family will develop a plan for The Chief when time permits them to do this. Until then, I think we as a community should allow them the time they need and still support a business that helps Indigenous people.

New faces, new revenues Youssef, Buell and Bosmans for the win; lodgers tax prevails

he people have spoken. Durango will be inaugurating two new City Council members and an incumbent later this month and more than doubling its lodgers tax starting June 1.

Current councilor Melissa Youssef, along with newcomers Jessika Buell and Olivier Bosmans were the top vote-getters in Tuesday’s City election. Youssef was the overall winner, with 3,766 votes, followed by Buell at 2,671 votes and Bosmans with 1,847.

They were trailed by three other candidates: Frank Lockwood, 1,791 votes; Seth Furtney, 1,604; and Harrison Wendt, 942.

The incoming councilors will be sworn in for their four-year terms on Tues., April 20, joining current members Barbara Noseworthy and Kim Baxter. Outgoing mayor Dean Brookie is term-limited and Chris Bettin decided not to run for a second term.

Youssef, who served as mayor in 2020, said she decided to run again because she wanted to build on the council’s successes of the past four years, including becoming more communicative, transparent and inclusive.

“We’ve prioritized applying solutions rather than band-aids to some important issues,” she told the Telegraph in March.

“We’ve identified priorities and are at a launching point to accomplish some great things. I’m running again because this is such a pivotal time.”

As an incumbent, successful local business owner and with degrees in finance and economics, she also said she is uniquely poised to support Durango’s post-pandemic recovery. “I believe the most immediate pressing issue is revitalizing our economy,” she said.

Buell, a single mother of two boys and owner of several small businesses, said she hopes to bring diversity to the Council, representing thirtysomethings, parents, the working class and business owners.

“I will fight for workforce/attainable housing, quality jobs, small businesses and smart growth,” she told the Telegraph in March.

Bosmans, an environmental consultant and engineer with an MBA, touted his hands-on technical and financial skills during his candidacy.

“After researching about the new candidates running, I noticed that nobody fills those gaps. So I decided to step up,” he said.

In addition, he has also served on the La Plata County Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment, and said he is honored to “continue my service to the community.”

The second issue on this spring’s ballot, Issue 1-A, an increase in the City’s lodgers tax from 2 to 5.25 percent, also passed by a somewhat narrow margin of 2,563 to 2,404 votes.

the 2 percent lodgers tax is charged to visitors when they rent accommodations in town. Currently, 60 percent of money from that tax, which generates about $500,000 a year, goes to marketing and advertising via Durango’s official tourism arm, Visit Durango; 30 percent goes to transit; and 10 percent to special events and administration.

The new tax, which will begin being assessed June 1, will equate to about $4.22 night for the average $130/night hotel room. The new tax is expected to bring in an estimated $2 million in 2022, the first full year it would be in effect and will be allocated as follows: • 55 percent toward sustainable tourism marketing • 20 percent toward transportation and transit services • 14 percent to arts and cultural events • 11 percent to above uses or purposes related to impacts of tourism “I feel like we have something that’s for the benefit of the community,” Jasper Welch, chairman of the 1-A initiative effort and longtime local business leader, told the Telegraph. “I think that’s important. I think we need to look at, long-term, how do we sustain Durango and keep what we all enjoy and still have a vibrant economy.”

With the new lodgers tax, Durango will become the first city in Colorado to have “sustainable marketing” written into its ordinance. Part of that, Welch said, is focusing on shoulder seasons and managing tourism, and overtourism, more so than marketing. For example, last year Visit Durango came up with its “Care for Durango” campaign to target negative impacts of rampant tourism. The campaign is based on a resident survey of the top five concerns with tourism which included: fire safety; habitat protection (trail erosion, river put-ins, etc.); COVID health precautions; cultural respect; and considerate and safe recreating.

“Part of sustainable tourism is we don’t really need to market summer other than to let people know we’re here. We really need to look at how we can have better your-round visitation,” said Welch. “Man-

After 25 years, Cathy Metz to retire City Council isn’t the only City department seeing a change-up. This week, longtime Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Metz, who served 25 years in her position, announced she is retiring July 2.

“I am very happy for Cathy but sad to see a great director and teammate leave the organization. She will be sorely missed,” City Manager José Madrigal Metz said.

"Twenty-five years of service to the city of Durango is an outstanding accomplishment.”

The city has started the initial phases of the recruitment process for her replacement and Metz has offered help in the transition, Madrigal said. He hopes to end the search process by Metz’s last day but said it could take longer.

During her tenure, Metz oversaw such accomplishments as building the City’s new Recreation Center, completing missing segments of the Animas River Trail, acquiring open space such as the Oxbow Park and Preserve and parts of Horse Gulch, the new Whitewater Park at Santa Rita, the opening of Lake Nighthorse and helping to build and maintain the city’s extensive trails network.

"Cathy’s impact on the city will be felt for generations. When you look around Durango, you see the outstanding recreation amenities and programs that have made us well known,” Madrigal said. "I hope the community will join me in sending a huge thank you to Cathy for her service, dedication and commitment.”n

Ready to roll Durango Mesa Park Foundation pledges $5M toward ‘world-class’ bike park

old onto your handlebars – Durango could be upping its cycling game. The region is now $5 million closer to realizing its dream of a world-class bike park with the help of the Durango Mesa Park Foundation. The nonprofit foundation announced the investment last week, saying it will go toward beginning the necessary infrastructure, design, planning and construction of what it says will be Colorado’s largest, most comprehensive bike park.

The bike park would be located on the 1,850-acre Durango Mesa, southeast of town. Formerly known as Ewing Mesa, the parcel was bought for $14 million by Mercury Payments founder Mark Katz in 2015. The intention was

to gift the land to the community for arts, cultural, educational and recreational uses. In 2019, Katz conveyed ownership of the land to the Durango Mesa Park Foundation, which laid out its vision for the bike park last Wednesday.

Plans include “intentionally built” trails and features meant to attract events to the region while also enhancing options for locals. Features would include: ● Progressive, flow and pump track features ● Specific-use trails for hiking, running, mountain biking, e-bikes and entry-level riders ● Specific trail for the Colorado High School Cycling League State Championships ● Covered BMX track ● Running venue to host events, training and races

● High-altitude Olympic-level training facility ● Adaptive sports facility and bike features ● National and World Cup cycling venue for training and racing ● Trails for hosting Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) sanctioned e-bike racing The hope, according to the Foundation’s Board of Directors, is to put Durango back on the international cycling map while offering an asset to the community. “Having trails and features that are designed and constructed in partnership with race promoters will give us a huge advantage in attracting events that will positively impact the community and establish Durango and La Plata County as a world-class racing and training destination,” Foundation board member 4

While the bike park will be designed for Olympic-caliber competition, there will also be an emphasis on beginner trails, as well as trails for the adaptive sports community.

“It’s important to the Foundation that we create an inclusive environment for all levels of riders, runners, hikers and nature seekers,” Sippy said. He added that trails will be planned for specific uses whenever possible, such as trails dedicated to runners/hikers, bikes, equestrians and even ebikes. “We want to create a park where every age and ability of Durango resident and visitor will feel welcome,” he said.

“We want to encourage everyone to treat Durango Mesa Park as their own personal playground once we’re open.”

The Foundation is leading the effort with the City of Durango, La Plata County and other partners to plan and develop 800 acres of the property, leaving the rest as open space. In addition to trails, other planned amenities include a music and cultural event venue, a new and expanded La Plata County Fairgrounds, disc golf course, dog park and outdoor sports complex with sports fields in the future.

The County began planning for the new fairgrounds in 2016, and the city began working on its plan for the area, which included a bike park, in 2018. The estimated cost for both plans came in at $150 million. As a result, all three parties laid out a strategy to tackle the project in smaller, more financially digestible phases. The first phase, which includes the bike park as well as the start of fairgrounds construction and infrastructure such as road improvements, restrooms and water supply, is budgeted at $15 million. According to the foundation, these improvements are the critical first step in “unlocking” future amenities and getting the park open to the public.

However, with $5 million from the Foundation for the

bike park and $5 million allocated from the County for initial construction on the fairgrounds and its share of infrastructure, the process at the City is moving more slowly.

The City had originally set aside funds for construction of the bike park, so with the Foundation taking over that, the money could be allocated for another use. Sippy said no additional taxpayer money would be needed to complete Phase 1, but he called on the community to let City leaders know how vital the project is. “We need to talk to our public officials about why Durango Mesa Park is an important community asset,” Sippy said. “We need the City to partner with us on the infrastructure, something they do very well. You don’t get these deals often.”

With financial support from the City, the Foundation believes work could begin this year.

“Initial investments will pay huge dividends in the short and long term, both from an economic standpoint as well as contributing to quality of life,” Foundation Executive Director Moira Montrose Compton said. “We continue to work with our partners at La Plata County and the City of Durango to support important infrastructure investments as well as future phases. We intend for this to be the beginning of a number of successful public/private partnerships that will benefit our community for generations to come.”

Shake your sugarmaker

A

maple in April is a force to be reckoned with. It is in the zone, doing its superpower thing, an engine firing on all cylinders. The sap flows with a vengeance, squeezed by specialized cells that expand during the heat of day to help create more pressure than inside a car tire.

The people who boil that sap into maple syrup belong to a hearty tribe called “sugarmakers.” They capitalize on a maple’s internal pressure by drilling holes in the tree, aka tapping, which allows the tree’s pressure to push the sap (or “water,” in sugarmaker lingo) out of the tree and into a collection system.

Late last year, a sugarmaker started showing up at the Missoula winter market. He seemed to be everywhere at once, speeding around and chatting with other vendors, while juggling a steady queue at his stand, where motivated shoppers were eager to buy the syrup he makes from three distinct types of maple tree.

Most sugarmakers have a grove or forest of maple trees, called a sugarbush, that they tap and link together with hoses. David Knudson doesn’t have a sugarbush to call his own. His business, Montana Mapleworks, partners with landowners who have maples on their properties. They include his urban neighbors; he tapped several of his neighbor’s Norway maple trees up and down the alley behind the sugarshack he built in his garage. As far as he knows, Knudson is the world’s only purveyor of Norway maple syrup. He also makes a vintage of syrup from the maples on the grounds of the Daly Mansion in Hamilton.

Altogether, he has silver, sugar and Norway maple trees tapped, along with box elder, which is also a maple, as well as birch, black walnut and sycamore syrups under development, set for release later this year.

Around here, Norway maples are considered invasive.

They drop helicopters that blow away and sprout aggressively. We have one in our yard, and the roots rob the garden from below. I wanted to cut it down, but the neighbors accused me of plotting a crime against nature, so I relented.

I’ve since come to appreciate the tree for its shade and the tree house. And now, thanks to Norway Maple Syrup, I have another reason to approve this interloper.

“I think it’s far superior in terms of caramel and depth,” Knudson says of the Norway maple syrup. And each batch is different. Some are darker with a hint of molasses, while other batches are lighter with more buttery caramel, depending on the exact time of year the sap starts flowing, how much the tree makes, and temperature fluctuations during the cooking process.

In order to properly enjoy my new syrup, and further appreciate my Norway maple tree, I begged Sue Kost – who sells fine cookies and pastries at the Missoula winter market – for her maple pecan pie recipe. These little mini pies remind me of the little Bama brand pecan pies from the 7-11 that I used to pig out on late night back in the day, but those were so trashy in comparison. They were pure corn syrup, and swapping that for maple syrup is a game changer. Maple pecan is a noted ice cream flavor too, lets not forget. And these little pies have quickly become quite beloved around my house. Buttery, nutty and drop-dead decadent, like a pecan pie should be. What can I say? The Norway maple can stay.

Sue uses Pampered Chef Mini (4-inch) pie pans and gets six pies out of a batch. Since those pans can be hard to find, I’ve adapted her recipe to standard-issue muffin tins, in which I get about 10 life-changing cupcake-sized maple pecan pies.

Mini Maple Bourbon Pecan Pies (Credit: Sue Kost) Crust: 1 stick (1/2 cup) frozen butter 1¼ cups flour 1 tablespoon sugar ½ teaspoon salt 5 tablespoons ice water Cut the butter into small cubes, about a half-inch on a side. Add the flour, sugar and salt to a mixing bowl, and stir

to combine. Add the cubed butter to the flour mixture and toss to coat. Cut the butter into the flour with a pastry cutter until the flour has turned a pale yellow and resembles a coarse crumble.

Add the water, and mix until combined. Don’t overwork it. The mixture should be just moist enough that it holds its shape when you squeeze it in your hand. Add more water if needed. Form the dough into a mound and wrap in plastic wrap, chilling for at least one hour or up to two days.

When ready to use, let the dough sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to soften slightly. Pat the dough into a puck-like shape and roll between two sheets of parchment paper to about 1/8” thickness. Find a bowl or cup about an inch in diameter more than your muffin tin. Press it down like a cookie cutter onto the rolled dough, packing as many of those circles as you can into the rolled sheet. Gather and ball up and re-roll the remaining dough to get a few more disks. If the circles start to fall apart when you lift them, place the sheet in the freezer for 10 minutes to stiffen up.

Place each disc in a well-buttered cupcake tin, gently pressing down first all around the bottom, pushing out any air bubbles. The sides will crease. Smooth them to fit with your fingers and shape into mini pie crusts.

Filling: 1 stick unsalted butter ½ cup packed brown sugar ½ cup maple syrup 2 tablespoons bourbon 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped pecans Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a saucepan or microwave, heat the butter, syrup, brown sugar and bourbon on high for two to three minutes, or until the butter is melted; whisk to combine. Let the mixture cool for three to four minutes.

Add eggs slowly, whisking constantly, followed by the vanilla and salt.

Toast the pecans on a dry pan on medium heat for about five minutes, stirring constantly.

Divide the pecans among all of the crusts. Cover them with the molten filling, up to crust level.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the crusts are golden brown and the filling has set. Let cool for five minutes. Go around each pie with a thin knife to free the edges. When cool enough to handle, pry them out with the knife. n

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): No one had ever proven that there was such a thing as electromagnetic waves until Piscean physicist Heinrich Hertz (1857–1894) did so in 1886. He was the innovator who first transmitted and received controlled radio waves. Alas, he didn’t think his breakthrough was useful.

In 1890, he confessed, “I do not think that the wireless waves I have discovered will have any practical application.” But other scientists were soon capitalizing on his work to communicate long distances.
