In case you’ve forgotten amid the onslaught of news over the last several months, our Four Corners neighbor to the southwest turned blue this year for the first time since 1996. This monumental achievement, no pun intended, was accomplished with the help of countless foot soldiers getting out the vote on the Navajo Nation. The charge was led by the Rural Utah Project, which drove an impressive 66,274 miles across the expansive reservation last year, registering some 5,875 voters in Arizona and Utah.

But their work – and mileage – is not going unrecognized. In its Dec. 13, 2020, “Person of the Year” issue – which named Joe Biden and Kamala Harris – TIME gave a shout-out to the diverse coalition of supporters in key states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona who helped deliver Biden 81 million votes and the White House.

Among the seven groups highlighted is the Rural Utah Project.

“The change really happened when the people were able to see what (the Trump) administration was doing to them during a worldwide pandemic – that it was basically playing with people’s lives,” Project Field Director Tara Benally, 47, told the magazine. Benally led a group of nine organizers who canvassed the 27,000square-mile reservation, which has been hit especially by COVID-19.

In an email statement, the organization said when TIME first called them, they were in disbelief. “We were over the moon to be included in such a historic issue,” the statement read. “We were proud to be represented amongst a nation of organizers who overcame impossible challenges, and hope that we can continue to organize for years to come.”

And now that they’ve put in the miles, the Rural Utah Project is calling on the Biden team to keep up its end of the deal. “It was indigenous nations that put Biden in office,” Benally told TIME. “There should be some return on his part because we will hold him accountable to that. No more broken promises, no more falling short of what the people need.”

LaVidaLocal Font of knowledge If reading is the cure for ignorance, then how do I know nearly nothing about fonts? Literally every printed word I have ever read – including that one entire book I finished in high school English – was in a font. Not the same font, probably. But I would never know. I learned as much about fonts in school as I learned about personal finance, or U.S. history after the Civil War. If understanding fonts were in any way foundational to living a healthy, prosperous, wellfounded, life, I would be very nearly dead.

Unfortunately, that statement is less hyperbole for me than for many of you, because I have decided to start publishing other people’s books for a living. This means fonts are now my life, my liberty and the end of my pursuit of happiness. They are also run by the Illuminati.

I’ll get to that later.

Since fonts are the tool of my new trade, I now wonder how much other professions know about their tools. Surgeons, for instance. I wonder how much surgeons really know about their scalpels.

I can readily believe they have to choose the right size scalpel for the job. But must they consider how the scalpel complements the particular tweezers waiting on their instrument tray? Do they dig into the history of any particular scalpel to discover the origins of its design family in the 19th century – do they consider the visual and emotional associations their patients might have with a specific scalpel – do they balk at paying actual money for a scalpel and therefore search for open-source scalpels vaguely reminiscent of that perfect scalpel they finally found after dozens of minutes of hard research? Or do they just use the scalpels that came with their demo copy of Adobe InDesign?

They may very well do all these things. I’ve never asked a surgeon myself. All I know is that learning about the Wide World of Fonts for my publishing endeavor really is like brain surgery … on my own brain.

I’ll prove it to you. As I write, I can see an empty orange juice container. Before my auto-conducted, font-induced brain surgery, I might have thought, “It says ‘orange juice.’” Now, I see a minimum

of three fonts. Each one intends to engage me in a different way – the swirly one to make me feel fancy about buying the good stuff; the bold sans-serif one to declare “FRESH TASTE GUARANTEED “with authority; and one written to make me ignore it like the sideeffectsmayincludetaxtitleandlicense voice at the end of commercials.

The crazy part is, this bottle doesn’t even use the word “juice” on the front label. It says “orange” and shows a picture of – get ready for this – an orange. But it only makes me THINK “juice” through font and design wizardry. Also because the bottle is clear and displays the juice on the inside.

But see? Forget the plastic bottle. Fonts conduct brain surgery, with letters instead of scalpels. I was blind, but now I see. I took the red pill, unless it’s the blue pill, and I cannot untake it. The Illuminati developed this wizardy among a populace unable to think or read for itself (I told you they’d come back). Yet I had to go and peek behind the curtain like a damned fool, and now I am burdened with wandering the Earth, seeing the fonts behind the words … and wondering how the heck I can harness this magic to use them for good.

Because, you see, using them for evil is really, really, really easy. Everyone who lands safely outside of my mother’s aesthetic demographic knows that Comic Sans is best used never. If Thomas Jefferson had written the Declaration of Independence in Comic Sans, King George would have cut his losses and let us go, and we as a fledgling union would yet have no unifying pride in fighting for our freedom. We would instead have been a nation founded on Comic Sans.

So, we would have used Comic Sans again in whichever war came after the Civil War, and Uncle Sam posters decreeing “I want YOU” just wouldn’t have carried the same panache, and brave young men would have lacked the motivation to be drafted, and ultimately we’d have lost World War II to the Vietnamese in Korea, and we’d all now be citizens of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But do the history classes talk about that? I don’t know, because my textbooks should have been printed in another font, one more engaging yet also historically authoritative. Like Papyrus.

SoapBox Resist rhetoric; rejoin and restart To the editor, I want to commend Jesse Anderson on his Jan. 14 editorial, “Next Wednesday.” It is nothing less than brilliant! “It’s impossible to see similarities when we speak in differences;” “they’re so ‘inclusive’ that they exclude people who aren’t.”

What wisdom those sentences and the entire piece reveal! I would suggest that everyone read his opinion piece again and again, contemplate its meaning and then take positive action. Holding back vitriol when one is incensed with what happened on Jan. 6 takes courage, and “it takes will” to refrain from repulsive rhetoric despite the urge. Let’s hope the new administration can start to unite our divide with its inclusive communication and respectable, presidential example. If media content and reporting were more factual and comparable to the wisdom of Jesse’s commentary and less of the phony and nasty entertainment we see masquerading as news, we might start to turn this ugliness around. Yes, let’s “rejoin and restart.”

Death tolls and political trolls To the editor, Amazing, in the beginning of the 21st century, our troops suffered big time in two war zones, in Afghanistan and Iraq. According to Amnesty International, 400,000 Iraqi civilians, in the third largest oil rich nation, unnecessarily died during the reign of Bush Jr. and most recently, 400,000 American civilians unnecessarily died

under Trump. On Jan. 20, The Donald flew to Mara Loco with his wife who is young enough to be his daughter, both were dressed in all-black and ended up stepping out of Air Force One, for the last time, in colorful tropical attire ready to party down with their kind of rich Floridians. Gee, if Trump is not found guilty of impeachment, he will get $200,000-a-year plus other big perks and start a new party, called The Patriots. Surreal, no Martha, it is for real.

Children could run the country better than adults at this point. Now that Biden is the new guy at the helm, hopefully he will do a much better job than his predecessors and keep his campaign promises. What Biden hasn’t discussed is getting along with all the leaders of the world. Some leaders, Biden says, are thugs. That’s insulting and not productive. Step up, politicians everywhere and be nice. Treat all people with dignity and respect. It would be wonderful to not have an ending picture like a nuclear war.

Next-best thing to a dictator To the editor, Trump exhorted his followers in the crowd at his rally Jan. 6, 2021, to march to the U.S. Capitol and express their anger with the election. His anarchists rioted and broke into the Capitol, injuring police officers and damaging property. An element of Trump’s followers are similar in ideology to Hitler’s Nazi hordes who took control of Germany in the 1930s. This fifth-column movement inspired by Trump is an ongoing danger to our democracy.

Corrupt Trump tried but failed to get the Secretary of

State in Georgia to justify changing approximately 12,000 votes from the presidential election in his favor so he could declare victory in Georgia. Then Trump would be in a position to say his fraudulent election claims in a number of other states are valid. Unfortunately, a number of U.S. senators and representatives have gone along with Trump’s claims so they can align themselves with Trump’s following of radical sympathizers. These politicians even tried to overturn the election on Jan. 6, 2021, when the approved electoral votes of the states were brought forward for approval in Congress.

Trump lost his cases in the courts, and then the corrupt president tried to circumvent the will of the people by coercing Republican lawmakers in swing states to overturn the election and appoint pro-Trump electors to the Electoral College. He has placed his self-interest above the country’s interests, and he is sabotaging Biden’s incoming administration. Trump is trying to turn the civilian leadership in the Pentagon into a politicized organization by infiltrating highly political, unqualified personnel, including former campaign staff, and this might pose a danger to our country.

The outgoing corrupt and vindictive president is sabotaging the incoming administration and assaulting our democracy, and he is promoting a radical anti-American following in the United States. Trump’s comments and actions are consistent with that of current and former dictators, including Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Kim Jong Un and Putin. He is the closest this country has come to having a dictator as president, and he and his followers bear close scrutiny in the future.

ReTooned/by Shan Wells Calling new voices A few weeks ago, I wrote that I needed, as a white man, to step back and listen. I think 2020 made it very clear that our country needs to do the same. For far too long, far too many voices have gone unheard. New ideas are necessary for paradigm shifts. Change does not happen in a monoculture. A wrongful death?

Family of man killed in 2019 sues school, guide, airbag maker

he family of a Longmont man killed in an avalanche while taking a course with the Silverton Avalanche School in 2019 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.

Peter Marshall, 40, died in a slide near Red Mountain Pass, in Upper Senator Beck Basin, on Jan. 5, 2019. A 68-page lawsuit was filed by his wife, Sara, and daughter, Amber, in Boulder County District Court on Jan. 2. It lists among the defendants: Silverton Avalanche School instructor Zachary Lovell, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, San Juan County Search and Rescue, and Backcountry Access, aka BCA, maker of avalanche safety equipment. The suit also names Kohlberg & Co., a private equity firm that acquired Boulder-based BCA and its parent company, K2 Sports, in 2017.

In the 2019 accident, which entailed two avalanches, Marshall was participating in a Level 2 American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) class with the Silverton Avalanche School.

The first avalanche, which was triggered

by Lovell, caught Marshall Marshall as well as five other skiers. It carried Marshall to the bottom of the slope where a second slide, triggered on an adjacent slope, broke and buried him in several feet of snow. Lovell and the other students were able to locate and uncover Marshall within 50 minutes, but it was too late.

The suit alleges a long list of infractions leading up to the slide, including fraud, misrepresentation, negligence and law breaking.

It also charges BCA with making a defective Float 32 airbag that did not inflate after Marshall attempted to trigger it. According to the CAIC accident report, the airbag was functioning properly and the trigger was out of the pack strap, but the bag did not deploy.

It’s unclear in the lawsuit how it was determined that the bag was faulty.

The suit goes on to state that the school and instructor acted “willfully, wantonly and recklessly, without regard for the consequences or the rights and safety of Peter Marshall or others” and “created substantial and unreasonable risks of serious injury and death to participants” in the class.

“Defendants were grossly negligent and that gross negligence was a cause of the injuries, damages and losses suffered by plaintiffs and the heirs of Peter Marshall,” the lawsuit states.

That winter, avalanche activity in Colorado was unprecedented in both size and scope, with March culminating in a record-setting span of Class 4 and 5 slides. According to the CAIC, there were 24 avalanches in the 4-5 category in the eight years previous to 2019 compared to 87 of that size during just two weeks in March 2019 alone.

In the 12 days prior to the slide that killed Marshall, the CAIC logged 72 slides in the north San Juans and rated avi danger at “considerable,” or Level 3 on a scale of 1-5. Threats that day included a buried weak layer that could produce persistent slab avalanches on 35-degree or steeper west-to-north-to-southeast slopes.

In its customary follow-up accident report based on site visits and interviews with school staff, witnesses and search and rescue, the CAIC noted several mistakes leading up to the avalanche. The three most critical ones included: the group skiing together all at once instead of one-byone; misjudging the slope’s steepness, aspect and avalanche danger; and failure to recognize the potential for slides on nearby slopes.

The lawsuit alleges that although Silverton Avalanche School staff and instructors agreed not to travel in avalanche terrain that weekend, Lovell seemed inclined to travel “in more complex and bigger terrain despite the fragile snowpack

and concerning avalanche conditions.”

The lawsuit does not identify the source of this information.

The lawsuit also cites several other failures on the part of the school and Lovell, including failing to communicate the day’s avi forecast and allowing instructors to lead students “into, through and below” avalanche terrain. The lawsuit also charges that the school and Lovell falsely represented training and qualifications, constituting fraud under the Colorado Consumer Protection Act. The lawsuit largely relies on the investigation of the CAIC, which has recently come under fire by some who say accident reports largely blame the victims, such as with a slide last March above the Eisenhower Tunnel. In that incident, snowboarders Tyler DeWitt and Evan Hannibal, who triggered the avalanche, handed over video footage to the CAIC believing it would help in future avalanche research and education. However, based on the ensuing report, Summit County filed criminal charges and fined the snowboarders $168,000 for their part in the slide, which buried a road and took out remote avalanche mitigation equipment but did not bury anyone.

The Marshall lawsuit does not cite a specific dollar amount in damages but “prays for and demands an award … to be fixed by the trier of fact in a reasonable amount” and also asks for court costs, attorney fees and “all such other relief” the court deems appropriate. n

Brain training Stressed out? Anxious? Here’s how to gain control of that monkey mind

H

olding it together has been difficult over the past several months. So, when I got an invite to take a Zoom meditation class, I was a little reluctant. In no universe could I see myself sitting at my computer and successfully avoiding my work emails, let alone “centering” myself with mindful meditation.

But, thanks to local meditation leader Kate Siber, I did.

Siber is a writer, lover of the outside, all-around bad ass and, more recently, dharma leader in training. She is also one of the only people in this world who could convince me to sit with my eyes closed in front of my computer screen on a Wednesday night to meditate with a “Brady Bunch” grid of strangers. While emails flooded my inbox and the world crumbled around me, I attempted to meditate to the sound of Siber’s computer voice, interspersed with refrigerator hums and dog snores.

Meditating at home is already hard, but lucky for me, I wasn’t alone in my struggle. It turns out, at the beginning of Siber’s meditation journey almost a decade ago, she was similarly cautious when it came to the idea of meditation and mindfulness. Her first experience, although not a Zoom call, was with a friend who wanted to have a casual meditation before dinner one evening – a Zen appetizer, if you will. They went to the nearby Durango Dharma Center and sat in a room with a group of strangers.

“I wasn’t sure what everyone was doing,” Siber recalled with laughter. “Everyone was just sitting there with their eyes closed.”

Any meditation newbie would probably mirror the oddity of that experience, too. On the surface, it really is just sitting around silently with your eyes closed. But Siber was lucky enough to have the inkling there was something deeper.

In 2013, a few months after her first experience, the

inkling grew into a fire, and Siber soon began attending weekly meditations at the Durango Dharma Center. In 2014, she dove deeper, attending her first retreat at a residential center, lasting five nights, giving her a sense of multi-day meditation.

She followed this path for a few years – attending various long-term retreats – and became more involved in the Dharma Center, serving as a volunteer and board member. Eventually, she started taking steps to become a leader, and starting Feb. 1 – after a lot of practice and work – she will be welcomed onto the Dharma Council as an official dharma leader in training.

Siber said her journey has been long, and it has changed her – and continues to change her to this day.

In as few words as she can muster, she describes it as “an epic adventure.” An adventure of internal and external distractions and subsequent findings, life-shattering epiphanies, and changing views on the world and individuals. If nothing else, though, it has been an 4

Mindfulness from p. 9 honest and humbling way to know herself better.

“Oftentimes what I found when I started practicing meditation in earnest was that my mind was anything but neat and tidy – it was pretty unruly,” Siber recalled.

That’s why meditation is called “practice.” Part of Siber’s position as a teacher is to remind people that it isn’t an instant cure all.

“A really essential part of coming to a meditation practice is to come with a willingness to be completely honest to see what’s really going on without trying to manipulate it to make it prettier,” she explained. “It’s as if we want to believe we are more put together than we are, but the freedom is in being with things exactly as they are and not needing things to be different in the moment.”

Pow, mind blown.

I, myself, needed to wrap my brain around this during the online class. The jam-packed Schmidt idea of meditation has enough nuances to make anyone’s head hurt. But thankfully, we have a few gurus in town, like Siber, offering meditation and mindfulness classes to relieve our headaches and help ease us into a more peaceful state.

Local mindfulness instructor Cindy Schmidt has been teaching mindful meditation since 2015, switching over to internet classes last spring when the pandemic hit. While she agrees it can be different to show up to a class through the internet, she doesn’t see many downfalls with the digital switch. In fact, she thinks online classes can be more

inclusive for those who have a hard time making it to a helps clear up the chatter. class or don’t live nearby.

was on the hunt for the Winter Pebbles, an assortment of turnips, potatoes, carrots, beets, parsnip and winter radishes that some enterprising farmers at the winter market sell as a mix. They look like a basket of gleaming jewels. They remind me of Fruity Pebbles, the breakfast of Flintstones.

Storage crops are typically harvested in the fall and kept cool and fresh all winter.

Homesteaders would store these tubers in aptly named root cellars, along with squash, sides of bacon, apples and whatever else they could squirrel away. The pandemic has made us contemplate various end-of-theworld scenarios and brought out the inner “prepper” in many people. It sounds fun and romantic, but the diet could get old, and any viable attempt to live off the land would mean coming to terms with turnips and some of the other harder-to-appreciate roots, including celeriac, rutabaga and Jerusalem artichoke.

I had been thinking about Winter Pebbles a lot after they first caught my eye and had decided to buy some at the next market. Alas, the folks at the Missoula Grain and Vegetable Co. stand had to break the sad news: early that morning, as co-owner Max Smith was transferring the winter pebbles from their burlap sack into their quart cartons, a gentleman made an offer on the entire sack.

The offer was accepted, and the pebbles were gone.

What about next week, I asked. “Unfortunately, that’s it for the season,” Max replied. They were now out of turnips and storage radishes for the year, which means the Winter Pebbles could no longer be complete.

So there I was, forced by fate to do what I could have done all along: buy a bunch of different roots and mix them together myself.

But I kept wondering: What was the gentleman going

to do with his huge sack of Winter Pebbles? It’s one thing to buy a small amount of Winter Pebbles and cook them right away, but storing a diverse assortment of root crops in the same bag like that can be risky. Each type of tuber will have different storage needs. Radishes, for example, do better in plastic bags, while potatoes, garlic and many others prefer mesh. If you’re buying a large volume of roots and planning on storing them, it’s actually wiser to buy and store them separately.

Winter Pebbles is more of a way of cooking than a specific mix of roots. It’s a way of getting to know what’s local in winter, and of tasting the flavors of the land, or the terroir, if you will. You may not be able to pronounce it, but you’ll know it when you taste it.

Serves 4 1 large potato, sliced into ½-inch rounds 1 large carrot, sliced into ½-inch rounds 1 medium parsnip, peeled and sliced into ½-inch rounds 5 Brussels sprouts, sliced in half 1 small red onion, in ½-inch rounds ¼ cup olive oil Salt and pepper 1/3 cup sugar 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped 10-ounce piece of goat cheese 1 rolled piece of pie dough or pizza dough (or you can skip this part and proceed with the roots) Preheat oven to 400. Toss the sliced roots in oil and season with salt and pepper.

Arrange them in a single layer on a baking pan. Roast until golden and tender, about 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Cook the sugar in 2 tablespoons of water in a thickbottomed saucepan on medium heat, stirring as necessary to prevent burning, until the mixture is amber colored, about 8 minutes. Turn off the heat, add the vinegar and a pinch of salt, and stir it in.

Pour the vinegar mix into a 9-inch pie pan. Scatter the sage and rosemary over the caramel. Arrange the sliced roots artfully atop the herbs, using pieces to stuff the holes. Sprinkle with the onion slices and crumbled goat cheese. Cover the whole thing with the dough and bake at 400 for another 20 minutes, or until the dough is nicely crusted.

Remove from the oven to cool, and invert the pan over a plate to serve. n

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Today the Capricorn artist Paul Cézanne (1839– 1906) is regarded as an important and influential painter.

Early in his career, though, he was rejected and even ridiculed by critics. One reason was that he loved making still-life paintings, which were considered low art. Of his 584 works, about 200 of them were of inanimate, commonplace objects. Fruit was his specialty. Typically he might spend 100 separate sessions in perfecting a particular bowl of apples. “Don’t you want to take a vacation from painting fruit?” he was asked. In response, he said that simply shifting the location of his easel in relation to his subject matter was almost more excitement than he could bear.
