As far as what lifts and trails will be open, we’re still in a state of – if you hate bad puns, look away – purgatory on what that will look like.

Southwest Colorado has received little to no early season snow. As a result, Purgatory Resort has had to rely on its snowmaking capabilities to make good on its target to open Nov. 20.

The problem, however, is that warm temperatures have complicated snowmaking efforts. Luckily, temperatures have dropped about 10 degrees up at Purgatory this week, allowing the mountain to make some progress.

“We were able to blow snow for 16 hours last night and the forecast is in our favor,” General Manager Dave Rathbun said Wednesday morning.

“We will continue to make snow every chance we can through the holiday weekend.”

As of the Telegraph’s print deadline Wednesday afternoon (we know, we’re old school), Purgatory officials said all signs point to opening Sunday. But of course, Mother Nature is out of anyone’s control, and that plan is subject to change.

And what exactly will opening day look like, in terms of running lifts and rideable trails? Purgatory spokeswoman Theresa Blake Graven told the Telegraph on Wednesday that’s also too soon to call.

“It’s just so dependent on weather,” she said.

Indeed, it appears Purgatory is dead set on kicking off ski season this weekend, despite other resorts around the state pushing back their opening dates, including Telluride and Steamboat.

Even the ol’ reliable Wolf Creek Ski Area, known for receiving the most snow in Colorado, has been limited to operating only on weekends.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, however, Wolf Creek will run from Nov. 24-28.

So if you’re itching for some turns, you’ve got options. In the meantime, try some of these snow inducing rituals, courtesy of Bluebird Backcountry: Put a spoon under your pillow; wear your pajamas inside out; flush an ice cube down the toilet; put a white crayon in the freezer; eat ice cream the night before – wait, we’ve been doing that one.

LaVidaLocal Haunted by Quakers “We can love completely what we cannot completely understand.”

– Norman Maclean Sitting in my office one morning, I noticed how quiet everything around me had become. No refrigerator humming an electric tune from the kitchen, no furnace vent straining air from beneath the floor, no sirens, no traffic outside my house. Not even the creak of my chair, for I occupied it like a monk in a rare moment of meditation.

Perfect stillness.

How long could it last? I counted the passing seconds by touching my thumb against the tips of my four fingers: one ... two ... three ... four ... one ... two ... three ... until the mantel clock chimed in with its Westminster salute to the hour.

The thought I’d been chasing slipped away.

My only clue to its whereabouts arrived as a memory from long ago while I sat for worship on a bench beside my best traveling companion Pam at a local meeting house in Cambridge, U.K. It was my first visit with the Religious Society of Friends. Raised Catholic, I’d never experienced this kind of tranquility during a meeting for worship. As a 10-year-old altar boy who served in our neighborhood church, I paid close attention to my duties: when I was required to carry cruets to the altar and pour water over the priest’s fingers before he administered communion; and when to tinkle the bell, stand up, kneel down, join in the chorus of hymn and prayer. Between it all, I tried to figure out why that old woman in the front pew kept staring at me. One of my earliest vocations, but hardly tranquil.

Do we accept that light pollution eventually blinds us to the heavens? Or that poor air quality in our cities – and increasingly in our suburbs – takes our breath away? Some of us do. But noise is a subtle sense, because we don’t often perceive how much it is with us. It’s a persistent presence we learn to both tolerate and ignore. And every sound can become a noise once it reaches a decibel that screams for our attention. Only then do we stand up and insist things quiet down. As any parent knows, sometimes it doesn’t take much commotion to wake a baby.

And the baby at his desk this time was me, but in my case what I didn’t hear woke me, much as it did while sitting for worship in that meeting house.

The five traditional senses – taste, touch, smell, hearing and sight – filter our awareness of the world, but a sixth sense exists, and I’m not talking about a Bruce Willis movie. I mean spirituality, or that quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

As a kid spooked by random sounds in the dark, I was inclined to think a Quaker’s reaction had to be even more timid than my own. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” shaped my idea of how one might appear, and I pictured a skinny Ichabod Crane character who trembled (or quaked) at the sound of an owl hooting or a rusty hinge creaking. Certainly not the stalwart portrait on the oatmeal cereal box, often mistaken for William Penn. Instead, that image turns out to be just an artist’s rendering of some disembodied soul outfitted like a trick-or-treater in a predictably old-fashioned costume. I even discovered that the word “Quaker” emerged in the 17th century as a verbal weapon for religious ridicule and persecution. Who would have guessed one day I’d sit down in a room full of real Quakers?

I’ve since concluded that worship or celebration doesn’t have to be about pageant and ritual. And to sit in the silence like a Quaker does not require a church, or a room full of uncomfortable benches, or even a congregation. My desk works fine, especially when I’m searching for the right words to shape these sentences, paragraphs and pages, which arrange themselves like stepping stones in my imagination. It’s easy to get lost in the act of writing, as if wandering along a river where sunlight filtered by the overhanging trees flicker like candles.

Sacrilegious as it sounds, I also worship good writers, like Norman Maclean, who at 74 years old managed to pull his prize specimen out of that river, having sat in silence for much of his life, learning to listen to what it whispered about his brother’s violent death and the tragedy it revealed. His novella, A River Runs Through It, is lean and powerfully muscled like a trout, but still deeply spiritual.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve not set out to ridicule any religion, because for me, eventually, all religions merge into one, and a writer scribbles through it. The churches were cut by the world’s great flood and shaped into whorls from the first pages of time. On some of these letters are timeless ideas.

Under the letters are the words, and some of the words aren’t mine.

I am haunted by Quakers.

SoapBox Confront true history

After progress in 2020 to bring racism to the heart of our national conversation, we are now seeing major pushback in the opposite direction. Groups worrying about “critical race theory” are discouraging the teaching of our actual American history in favor of a rosy and glorified Euro-centric version that starts in 1776 and ignores both the reality of slavery and Native American genocide, as well as their ongoing effects in the present day.

To clarify, “Critical race theory is the highly researched academic framework that teaches racism as being ingrained in modern law and institutions rather than something that exists only as a belief humans hold,” journalist Kendi King writes.

“When you make racism something dependent only on a person, you discount the larger ways in which it works in our schooling, prison, mental health and just about every other publicly accessible system in the United States.”

What do we gain by forgetting our history or by gaslighting our neighbors into believing their past traumas should be irrelevant to the present? These actions make white people feel comfortable, while fostering the conditions that allow racism to fester and flourish. Recent use of a hate symbol during a school board meeting to imply that our school district officials are the fascists while the people forced to wear masks are the victims is a total misrepresentation of history. It also minimizes the extreme trauma caused by Nazis

D-Tooned/by Rob Pudim and the ongoing harm active white supremacist groups are still perpetuating throughout our country.

BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) members of our community have long been speaking up to share their experiences dealing with micro-aggressions, racist “jokes,” offensive imagery like “The Chief” statue and open use of racial slurs in the workplace. These experiences make them feel unwelcome and unsafe in Durango and the surrounding communities, and have led many to move away altogether. When white-presenting members of the community – those who are perceived as white regardless of their racial and ethnic heritage – both ignore these lived experiences and organize around their own feelings of persecution, this reopens wounds and retraumatizes our neighbors who already feel unwelcome.

By not learning our actual history, it’s easy to perceive inconveniences to individualism as oppression, and a lack of complete power as righteous victimhood. This is exactly why we need to teach and confront our true history so we are not doomed to repeat the past.

The idea that racism is embedded in our institutions and isn’t just an interpersonal problem, challenges the ideas of individualism, and this is where the rhetoric runs up against our other hot-button issue of late, COVID-19.

Certain individuals within our community have become very vocal in the name of “loving our children” while publicly

slandering others and simultaneously employing rhetoric steeped in hatred. They push a narrative that masking – during a global pandemic that has caused the deaths of some 5 million people – is somehow “cruel” and “unsafe.” They assume that COVID restrictions are a ploy to “seize control” and not to provide for the actual safety of our children and community members during an extremely challenging time. The reality is that the 9-R School District is one of the only surrounding districts that has been able to remain consistently open this academic year without large numbers of quarantines.

We must recognize that the welcoming of slander, racist symbols and false statistics in our community is casting a shadow over all of us, including our children. Our children are stronger and more resilient than they’re given credit for. They can endure the inconvenience of wearing a mask in order to keep their community safe. And if given the chance to truly learn about America’s complex history, they can use this knowledge to become a generation that will move us toward a more just future.

Land of too many uses?

Forest Service grapples with grazing, wildlife issues

W

ith bighorn populations struggling to survive in Southwest Colorado, what’s taking the U.S. Forest Service so long to come down on a final decision on domestic sheep grazing in the Weminuche Wilderness?

For years, bighorn herds in this part of the state have been stagnant or declining, a result of a number of factors including habitat loss, drought, herd isolation, as well as the overall impacts of change climate, to name a few.

But the most obvious reason, researchers say, is a bacterial disease – known as Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, or M.ovi – that can only be given to bighorns by domestic sheep, usually when they are grazing the high country.

Tests have subsequently confirmed the presence of the disease in bighorn herds.

So when it was time in 2012 to re-evaluate the grazing permits for one of the largest sheepherders in the region – Ignacio rancher J. Paul Brown – wildlife agencies and many conservation groups felt it was time to start phasing out sheep from the landscape.

In 2016, a Forest Service analysis of Brown’s permit clearly drew a connection between the domestic sheep and the disease in bighorns. But by 2018, the Forest Service threw out the study and postponed a final decision in order to “collect more data.” Over the past five years, substantial efforts have been made to further prove the risk sheep pose in bighorn territory, despite evidence elsewhere in the West.

As it stands, the Forest Service says staffing issues and other projects with higher priority have delayed a final de-

cision. James Simino, Columbine District ranger for the San Juan National Forest, said it likely won’t be until at least late 2022 that the agency can resume the process, and from there, there’s no telling when a decision will be made.

All of this at a time when bighorn numbers are falling dangerously low.

‘The science is there’ For more than 50 years, Brown and his family has led sheep from his ranch in Ignacio to graze the high country of the Weminuche Wilderness, Colorado’s largest wilderness area.

All told, Brown’s permit allowed for about 5,200 sheep.

And all the while, he maintains bighorns do not interact with his herd. “I’ve never seen a bighorn on our allotments,” Brown said. “And we still haven’t seen any.”

If bighorns, known for wandering long distances, come into contact with domestic sheep, they can contract the deadly bacteria, which can cause pneumonia and respiratory disease, and be fatal. Worse, an infected bighorn can bring the bacteria back to its herd, resulting in widespread die-off and reducing the survival rate of lambs for years to come.

It appears this is exactly what’s happening to the herd in the Weminuche near and around Brown’s grazing allotments, said Jamin Grigg, senior wildlife biologist for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

After evaluating the landscape and determining the size of bighorn population it can support, CPW set an objective of about 400 on the low end and 920 on the high end. In 2010, the herd was about 460 bighorns and has since declined to about 400, primarily due to stagnant reproductive numbers.

“A lot of the herds in this area have been exposed,” Grigg said. “The science is there. We can’t directly attribute that to interaction with sheep, but we know interactions occur, and we know the risks involved with interactions.”

Political hot potato The Forest Service’s first analysis, known as an Environmental Impact Statement, also drew this conclusion in the 2016 review of Brown’s permit, and it appeared the agency was set to reduce sheep grazing in the high country.

But ultimately, the agency backtracked and said it needed more data to support any decisions. Dan Parkinson, with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, said the move was likely a result of pressure from the wool industry as well as other ranchers who depend on public lands. “(The Forest Service) has the data, but they are in a tough spot politically,” Parkinson said.

The only recourse, however, was to go back to the drawing board and collect more data. CPW, for its part, started to put GPS collars on bighorns to track their movements, on top of an already years-long effort to monitor herds by helicopter. And, Mountain Studies Institute in 2018 launched an ongoing citizen science effort that encouraged recreationists to help document bighorns and domestic sheep in the backcountry.

Brad Weinmeister, a biologist for CPW, said more than 40 animals were collared. Despite challenges with GPS equipment and a small sample size of animals, there was one major takeaway: bighorns like to move. “It demonstrated these sheep are moving outside their herds, covering great distances,” he said. “They’re going out exploring, and coming back to the herd. It’s what you expect.”

BighornSheep from p.7 in September, Weinmeister said, which only drove home the already-known fact bighorns in the Weminuche could be moving into allotment areas and returning to their herds with a potentially deadly bacteria.

Separation of wild and tame The Forest Service said it was unable to grant a phone interview since it was first contacted for this story Oct. 28.

However, in an email, Simino said a large amount of staff turnover in the past few years has made it challenging to complete the sheep grazing analysis. He added the project likely wouldn’t be picked back up until October 2022.

“There are too many things outside of my control within that process to give an accurate completion date,” Simino wrote.

On top of the local Forest Service showing the clear risks domestic sheep pose to bighorns, what’s also frustrating is that science and situations across the West have come to the same conclusion, said Terry Meyers with the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society.

One of the most significant instances was in 2010, when the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the Payette National Forest Service’s decision in Idaho to phase out active sheep permits because of the risk of disease transmission. Also in 2010, a massive study from 23 different U.S. and Canadian wildlife agencies recommended 9 miles of separation between the two animals, nowhere near the buffer in the San Juans.

“Practical solutions will be difficult, if not impossible to achieve until the risk of disease transmission from domestic sheep to wild sheep is acknowledged by those responsible for wildlife and agricultural management,” CPW wrote in a 2012 report.

This mountain of evidence, Meyers said, makes it so confounding why the San Juan National Forest has waited almost a decade now on the Weminuche decision,

as bighorns continue to suffer.

“The Forest Service already knows it’s a risk,” Meyers said. “But there’s a lot of pressure for them to continue grazing, and they are loathe to close an active allotment.

There would be a lot of blowback, and I think they decided to find a way to delay making that decision a little longer.”

Only so much room to roam The stranglehold domestic sheep have on the backcountry also prohibits bighorns from living in their historic range and intermingling with other wild herds.

While it’s generally thought bighorns live in the high alpine, more and more studies prove they use all different kinds of terrain. CPW, for instance, estimated bighorns occupy just 15% to 35% of their historic range.

“The habitat they use is not as specific as we thought,” said Weinmeister, adding some collared bighorns traveled 20 miles a day, sometimes in snow.

Having livestock over critical parts of the landscape also prohibits transplant projects to increase the number and health of wild herds, which CPW has done across the state where grazing has been phased out. “It’s too dangerous with domestic sheep on the landscape,” Grigg said.

Part of the complicated, interconnected puzzle is north of Silverton, where far more sheep graze. In August, the Bureau of Land Management proposed reauthorizing more than 65,000 acres of land, mostly for Montrose rancher Ernie Etchart. The pending decision, critics say, keeps the door open for bighorns to run into livestock.

But it also continues the risk of stray domestic sheep that escape the pack to run into bighorns, which has been a major issue for Etchart’s herds.

Disease aside, when bighorns come into contact with domestic sheep, it’s the bighorns that come out on the losing end. CPW has a mandate that any bighorn known to encounter a domestic sheep must be euthanized to prevent it from going back to its herd and infecting other animals. Seven bighorns have been killed in the Southwest region since 2016, CPW said.

“It’s highly likely there are contacts happening we’re

not able to document. We just don’t have the resources to do that, nor do federal agencies,” Grigg said. “It’s a disappointing situation, but it’s also the most responsible decision to remove the risk of a die off.”

Sticking up for wildlife In 2020, Brown took a buyout from a nonprofit conservation group, which effectively gave up one of his high-risk allotments, reducing his range by 11,000 acres and herd by about 800 sheep. But still, Brown has about 40,000 acres to graze, and said the recent high prices of lamb have made the venture more profitable, despite the reduced number of sheep. Brown has also moved cattle onto lands where sheep once roamed.

“Its worked out pretty well,” Brown said. “There’s been good demand for lamb and there’s not as many lambs for sale because a lot of people have gotten out, West-wide.”

In his late 60s, Brown said he has no imminent plans to retire. But when the time comes, his son will take over. And grazing on public lands is essential to the operation, with costs about $2 per five sheep a month compared to about $20 a month on private land. Even with low costs, grazing in the San Juans has dropped dramatically from about 200,000 livestock in 1920 to just 6,100 sheep nowadays.

But bighorns have declined, too.

By the early 1900s, only a small number of native sheep remained in Colorado, decimated by hunting, disease and habitat loss. Since then, a decades-long effort to restore the species has resulted in a population estimated at 7,000 statewide. Now, about 2,000 bighorns roam Southwest Colorado.

Parkinson, with Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, said it’s time to start sticking up for these herds and reduce range overlap.

“My gosh, it’s been almost 10 years now, and it’s just one delay after another, and bighorns remain very much at risk in the Weminuche,” he said. “Everyone knows it’s a political hot potato, but at some point, scientists in the organization need to say the data and science is abundantly clear that the risk is coming from domestic sheep.” ■

Filling big shoes Indoctrinated by Keith Richards and old KSUT CDs, local leftie steps up to bring you music scene

ome of us have met before; some of us have not. So, allow me a quick introduction and some insight. My goal with this first column is two-fold: 1. To proudly share my leftist credentials to you, the Telegraph faithful; and 2. To share my musical experience.

It all stems back to the late aughts, when I was radicalized while working at the local public library, checking out the one copy of Keith Richards’ biography, a James Patterson novel and whatever KSUT CD tickled my fancy.

For the last eight years, I taught some of you and/or your children the darkest socialist secrets known to human record in subjects like humanities, film studies and creative writing at a local high school. I didn’t make them stupider, I promise.

For almost 15 years, though, I’ve played music in and around town with Six Dollar String Band and DJ-ed under the moniker “Bad Goat Disco,” a wink to Lenin’s obscure obsession with goats of mal repute.

I’d like to say a lot has happened since I last saw many of you during those idyllic pre-COVID times. But clearly, we continue to navigate a pandemic whose costs are stacking up in staggering, maddening and heartbreaking ways. Many of us have lost friends, loved ones, homes or livelihoods and are struggling to carry on. I know it hit me, though to a much lesser degree than others.

It happened on just another lukewarm February lockdown day earlier this year, when I was teaching from my home office (probably with mute on.) My boss called to

tell me that enrollment was low for the following school year and my position would be eliminated come June.

I’ve seen tough times, we all have, but that “reductionin-force” jam was a jagged little chunk to swallow. Not to mention it was preceded by a bitter aperitif of continued COVID lockdown, family health scares, “hybrid” learning and the destruction of local and regional musical events, my major source of livelihood and community.

As my days teaching began to wind down, the sting of getting laid off gave way to optimism. And heck, the band and I were still managing to stay alive, playing private events and weddings throughout the region.

The last project I worked on with my students was one about resilience. We investigated the term through the lenses of psychology, sociology, economics and biology.

What does it mean for a person to be resilient? For a school? For a town? For our environment and planet? We created a magazine that we distributed digitally for free.

It seemed appropriate to the time we were in. Hell, it still does. And, that’s where I’ll pick up with this column.

When the Telegraph reached out to see if I was interested in contributing, I knew this was too good of an opportunity to pass up. But the shoes I have to fill are big.

For years, Chris Aaland faithfully wrote his “Top Shelf” column with grit, candor, a dash of controversy and his finger firmly on the pulse of regional music. Like many of you, I faithfully read his column, gaining insight into the mind of the local tastemaker’s predilection for garage rock, bluegrass and Ska beers. All good things.

In his final column, Chris respectfully paid his tab and let us know he’d be moving on to the next proverbial watering hole. I would be remiss to not recognize the effort, love and craft he brought to his column. On behalf of thousands of people, I offer a heartfelt thank you. See you down the trail, good buddy. This column is in terrible, leftist hands, and I’m so, so sorry.

For the time being, my column will serve less as a space for commentary, top 10 lists, sarcasm and ennui, and more as a space to share the myriad creative voices in our community. Voices that you might not know, or perhaps have heard about, including musicians, artists and mischief-makers. Think of me as a less handsome Studs Terkel.

I’m sorry to disappoint you, but this column will not be my personal soapbox. That’s what my anonymous Facebook account is for. (Thanks to my comrades!) ■

Dear Rachel, How does the entire building/construction/ home repair industrial complex survive with no regard for schedules, or communication, or showing up to work whatsoever? If I treated my clients the way contractors treat all other human beings, I’d be jobless, reference-less and a burden on society. Yet contractors can treat “9:00 a.m. tomorrow” to mean “sometime in the next calendar year” without repercussion. When do we revolt?

We all have an abusive relationship with skilled laborers because they know full well we cannot plumb our own toilets or wire our own wires. I once had a chimney sweep no-show because, and I quote, “Sonic’s happy hour was about to end.”

What are we going to do, break up with them and go it alone? Until we return to living on the land – by which I mean literally eating dirt – we’re stuck.

Dear Spin Cycle Purgatory, I dread to think how long your normal wash setting takes. Maybe it waits for you to get pregnant and have a child, and then raise the child to an age where they obtain the motor skills needed to wash your clothes for you. That seems complicated, however.
