In its fourth year, Backcountry Experience’s Colorado Trail Days returns this weekend with a full slate of activities for the trail freaks near and far. Headlining this year’s event is Ridgway-based alpinist, climbing guide and mountain athlete Steve House. At 5 p.m. Saturday, House will present his latest book Training for the Uphill Athlete, which he wrote with the help of ultra-running phenom Kilian Jornet and cross country ski coach Steve Johnson.

Other speakers include: ultralight backpacker 5 Pound Pete; “The Running Bum” Morgan Sjogren; artist and adventurer Hannah Green; and Colorado’s “Mr. Fourteener,” guidebook author Gerry Roach (for more on him, see p. 19.)

LaVidaLocal Maui wowie I should have known better, but I had an itch.

My dear grandmother, who is 91 years old, decided to take the family to Maui for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. And about 48 hours into that vacation, I discovered there was some climbing nearby. So, of course I had to make a plan to get there and check it out.

My girlfriend, Amber, and I decided not to rent a car since several others in our family had. So, like the time before I got a drivers license, I had to rely on Mom and Dad for a ride. And since my grandma is adventurous, she came along too. Soon enough just about everyone in our 13 person family unit was going to this beach just so I could go climbing.

The “climbing” ended up being a cliffjumping spot with only a minimal amount of rock, and cliff jumpers leaping off, one by one, minute by minute.

The whole thing was a bust, as my inner voice told me, “You’re in Hawaii, you should be surfing!”

The best part of having a 91-year-old grandmother, who is very much still active and lucid, is the stories she tells. I feel like every time I see her, I get an important part of my family history. Last summer, I learned that my grandfather, who died when I was a teen-ager, had received a Purple Heart in World War II. I also learned that he was a skilled typist when such a skill was rare, and after he was shot in the war, he was sent back to the States to write discharges for other soldiers, until the war ended and he was discharged.

Little details like that about my grandfather’s life are sacred to me. Most of my memories of my Grandfather are from when we’d visit him in the nursing home. World War II seems like the distant past until grandma starts telling stories about it; stories about the first 16-year-old from her hometown to die in the war, and when we dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

This time, as we sat in our vacation house, she started telling more stories from that time period, and why, in fact she’d always wanted to take a trip to Hawaii. It turns out my grandfather was supposed to take a trip there with his family, and just before they were supposed to leave, his father suffered a stroke, and they never got to take the trip. So this trip we were on was redemption for that, and plus, she told me, she had saved the money from my grandfather’s pension – he was a music teacher in the suburbs of Chicago – to pay for our trip.

Then she started telling me a little about grandpa’s dad, who was a World

War I veteran, and she mentioned that my grandpa’s brother was against war and had written a thesis on Gandhi and his use of nonviolence. This did not make my great grandfather happy. It does make me want to know more about my grandfather’s brother, Howard, who is still alive and has kept his beliefs about nonviolence all these years.

We did a lot of the tourist things one does in Maui – luaus, tropical drinks, sunset cruises, snorkeling, hikes on the beach, lying around the pool – but up until the last day I’d yet to get on a surfboard; something I really wanted to do. I’ve surfed twice before, but never really learned any technique. My grandma sealed the deal by saying she’d pay for some lessons.

We booked the lessons online, and when we showed up, no one was at the shop. Fortunately, just two doors down was another surf shop, and we were able to get a lesson from them. The surf instructors reminded me of climbing bums – instead of living for the climb, they were living for the wave. Our instructor guided us down to the beach, over-stoking about how the surf had just improved and conditions were getting really good.

I am as scared of surfing as I was of climbing when I first started. I’m not naturally a water person, and I’ve made it a habit to only do outdoor sports where I feel comfortable with the risk. As I looked around the beach, I couldn’t help but notice the group of 30 groms getting ready for the same waves we were about to face.

We floundered about on small waves with our instructor, who was super patient, as I mostly failed to follow the simple instructions about how to stand up and ride the wave. After an hour, he challenged us to swim out past the masses of people in the beginner waves. I was terrified but wanted to at least challenge myself a little. After what seemed like a half hour of getting pushed back by waves and trying to swim out to my instructor, I was finally ready.

He cautioned me to stay calm, remember my posture and just enjoy the peacefulness of it.

As the wave approached, I felt a primal fear but managed to relax and stay on the board for a few seconds before I fell off, crashing down with the wave and then getting thrown about like I was in a washing machine. But, damn, there was a moment of transcendence and magic, and I had a vision of why people like my instructor dedicate their lives to surfing. As I crashed and realized all was OK, I heard my instructor encouraging me to swim back for one more, but I pretended I didn’t hear him, and headed back to the shores of safety.

Iran: Who & where is the threat?

To the editor, The official U.S. narrative on Iran is that it is an escalating threat to “peace and security” in the Middle East and must be stopped. Step by step, with Mike Pompeo and John Bolton – two war maniacs – taking the lead, the Trump administration has sought to destabilize Iran with sanctions, if possible to bring about regime change, and if necessary provoke actions by Iran that will provide a pretext for war. If this sounds similar to the nonexistent Gulf of Tonkin “incident” in 1964 and the false pretenses behind the post-9/11 invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, it should. Only this time around is even more dangerous and more preposterous.

Journalists and Congress members have been pestering Trump and his aides with questions about their determination to go to war with Iran. Trump, typically, tells reporters to wait and see, stymieing them. They should be asking different questions, such as: What threat does Iran pose to U.S. interests? Why shouldn’t Iran’s actions be considered responses to the U.S. policy of “maximum pressure?” The answers to these two questions are clear: Iran is doing nothing that constitutes a new threat to the U.S. or any other country’s interests, and Iran’s latest actions – even if Tehran is responsible for the attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf and the downing of a U.S. drone – are best understood as responses to U.S. provocations.

What I believe we are now witnessing is the result of the ascendance of the hardliners on both sides. U.S. policy since the appointments of Pompeo and Bolton and withdrawal from the nuclear deal has energized their counterparts in Iran – the Revolutionary Guard, certain military leaders and others long opposed to the nuclear deal are now able to show that the Americans are completely untrustworthy.4

The fact is that the Trump administration has been on a mission from day one, with open support from Israel and Saudi Arabia, to eliminate – not merely deter or contain – the ayatollah’s government. That mission has engaged U.S. administrations since the early 1950s, but unlike those previous efforts, Trump seems prepared to commit forces to accomplish regime change. Yes, he has said he wants to avoid war, especially with a re-election campaign under way. That is why his preference is not to deploy yet another war-fighting force to the Middle East, which would undermine his longstanding criticism of “endless wars” there. But preference is not policy, and the policy, being relentlessly pushed by Bolton and Pompeo, is to push Iran’s regime to the brink and get rid of it.

If Trump takes the U.S. to war with Iran, which could happen without consultation or authorization from Congress (another impeachable offense), the responsibility will be squarely on his head. Thanks to the Obama administration, Iran has been in compliance with the nuclear deal, an achievement that is very much in the security interests of the U.S. and its Middle East allies.

Obama showed that moving from confrontation to engagement pays off, and that mutual respect can move mountains even when trust is absent. Now, however, the enemies of “peace and security” are in Washington, Tel Aviv and Riyadh. And among the most outrageous aspects of Trump’s Middle East policy is rewarding those enemies – Israel, with a full tilt to Benjamin Netanyahu’s assault on the Palestinians, complete with a dead-on-arrival “peace plan;” and Saudi Arabia, with billions of dollars in military aid so the murderous crown prince, Mohammad bin Salman, can continue his aggression in Yemen.

I will say again: Donald Trump and his minions are the chief threats to America’s – and for that matter, the world’s – real security.

Independence from meat products To the editor, What ever happened to the good old days when the worst things we had to fear on the 4th of July were traffic jams and wayward fireworks?

According to the USDA’s Meat & Poultry Hotline, this year’s top threat is food poisoning by nasty E. coli and Salmonella bugs lurking in hamburgers and hot dogs at backyard barbecues. The hotline’s advice is to grill them longer and hotter. They don’t bother to mention that high-temperature grilling of meat products also forms lots of cancer-causing compounds. And, who knows what they really put into those hot dog casings in the first place?

Luckily, a bunch of enterprising U.S. food manufacturers and processors have met this challenge head-on by developing a great variety of healthful, delicious and convenient veggie burgers and soy dogs. These plantbased foods don’t harbor nasty pathogens or cancer-causing compounds. They don’t even carry cholesterol, saturated fats, drugs or pesticides. And, they are waiting for us in the frozen food section of our supermarket.

This 4th of July offers a great opportunity to declare our independence from the meat industry and to share wholesome veggie burgers and soy dogs with our family and friends.

Stop Iranian oil tanker attacks To the editor, After two more oil tankers were attacked in the Middle East, Secretary of State Pompeo and President Trump stated Iran was responsible for the attacks. This brings to six the number of oil tankers attacked by Iran.

Iran is attempting to get the United States to lift its crippling economic sanctions which have severely restricted its oil shipments. Iran is trying to interdict oil

shipments from competing countries in the region and could be trying to drive up world oil prices, but this strategy runs the risk of the United States and other countries taking military action against Iran.

We, and other impacted countries, should put an end to the Iranian attacks on the oil tankers by conducting mine sweeping operations in the Gulf of Oman, Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. Impacted countries should provide naval escorts to the tankers. If necessary, Iranian naval forces should be neutralized, and while at it, we could take out Iran’s strategic weapons systems.

Forest Service rule change could cut public comment out of the equation

he rules are about to change when it comes to public input on public lands. Officials with the U.S. Forest Service say a new rule – published in the Federal Register on June 13 – will make things more efficient for the agency. But, others wonder what exactly would be sacrificed on the altar of efficiency.

The new rule is a revision of the National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA. Over the years, specific NEPA rules and regulations have been updated and refined to keep up with changing times and advancing sciences, the last of which occurred in 2008. However, this rule change would give Forest Service officials far more discretion when it comes to deciding which activities and projects need environmental analysis and public input – and which ones do not.

“I think the Forest Service is suffering a crisis of conscious of what the agency is all about,” Susan Jane Brown, public lands director and staff attorney for the Western Environmental Law Center, said.

published following a decision. It could come immediately, weeks after, even months after or longer.

In addition, by the time word got out about the final decision, there would be no way for the public to get involved – other than filing a lawsuit.

Brown said it will lead to more litigation. “The only option the public has is to go to federal court,” she added.

is that the Forest Service is proposing to add some new exclusions and expand existing ones.

These exclusions are related to special uses, infrastructure, restoration and the ability to rely on categorical exclusions already approved by other federal agencies.

One example of a special use exclusion could be a guided hiking trip along approved trails in the Weminuche Wilderness; an infrastructure project could be decommissioning a rarely used and poorly maintained Forest Service road in the San Juans; and, a restoration project could be removing beetle-kill trees from the Rio Grande National Forest via commercial timber harvesting.

The new rule does have various restrictions to the exclusions, like the harvesting of beetle-kill trees would be limited to 4,200 acres or less. But, one thing that concerns conservationists is that under the new rule the Forest Service would be able to link or stack multiple exclusions. The harvesting of beetle-kill trees on 4,200 acres, for example, could be approved right next to a project where 5 miles of new road could be built to access those lands. And, the public would only find out after the final decision was made.

Why now?

Essentially, the agency’s reasoning for adding more of these categorical exclusions is wildfires and an ever-growing backlog of paperwork.

First, the Forest Service is spending more and more of its budget on fire suppression each year. According to the agency, fighting wildfires made up 16 percent of the budget in 1995. Last year, it was 57 percent of the budget.

As wildfires become larger and more common, the Forest Service has had to reduce staff not related to fire suppression and shift funds from other programs – even fire mitigation projects like prescribed burns or the removal of fuels like diseased or dead trees. This issue is something Brown, in particular, has been putting the spotlight on for years.

Relief came in 2018 when Congress passed legislation designating fire suppression funds to come from a different source under the Federal Emergency Management Act, or FEMA. “They were spending so much money to suppress

fires,” Brown explained. “Now that Congress has shifted the sponsive to public interest on a specific project. JACKSON, Wyo. – A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against a resort owner and developer, accusing him of actions that resulted in the death of two laborers in an unsecured 12-foot-deep trench that collapsed on them last September.

The Jackson Hole News&Guide reports the complaint cites text messages that were reportedly from the developer to the two men, giving them job-related orders. The text messages indicated that the work site was in violation of local and state regulations. The lawsuit says one message in August to one of the two laborers said: “Keep working regardless of what anyone says.”

This lawsuit asks for $1 million each in damages for beneficiaries of the two men. The News&Guide says that the county prosecutor hasn’t decided what criminal charges, if any, will be filed.

Wyoming’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed penalizing the developer $10,532 for “serious” violations.

BANFF, Alberta – Elected officials in Banff have started a conversation about whether congestion pricing would help the town inside Banff National Park deal with its excess of cars during summer.

It seems to be a no-go at the moment, but the topic is on the table.

Banff has set a congestion level defined by 24,000 trips in a day within its borders as unacceptable. By that metric, the town was congested 67 times last year, according to the town’s engineering coordinator, Stephen Allan.

Applying a fee for use of a car during congested times would seek to discourage use of the vehicle. A congestion charge of $5 to $15 applied from June through September would yield $1.1 million to $5.5 million for alternative transportation, Allen said.

London implemented a congestion charge in 2003 that was credited with reducing car travel 23 percent by 2012. In 2016-18, the charge yielded $280 million that underwrote other transit initiatives.

Elsewhere in the world, both Singapore and Stockholm levy congestion charges, and Vancouver has been exploring such a charge.

In Colorado, Crested Butte is talking congestion, too. But it’s a whole different problem, one apparently caused by employees of downtown shops parking in front of the stores. This has the Town Council talking about enforcing parking limits, including the mountain town equivalent of a parking maid.

“The question facing the council appears to be whether to implement a comprehensive parking plan in town and – that means paid parking – or keep flying with a Crested Butte casual attitude,” Mark Reaman, editor of the Crested Butte News, explains.

Reaman concedes Crested Butte’s traffic problems would be considered trifling – or less – in much of the motorized universe. What nobody seems to want is paid parking, as began several years ago in Breckenridge. During July, the mountain towns’ busiest and most prosperous month, Crested Butte is “certainly busy and more stressful than May parking, but it’s rarely over-the-top hell,” he writes.

Kerouac bronzed along one of his roads FRASER – A life-size bronze statue of the writer Jack Kerouac has been completed and now stands in the vicinity of Fraser, along with a similar statue of President Dwight Eisenhower.

Eisenhower is an easy explanation. He enjoyed fly fishing around Fraser when he was president, as his wife, Mamie, was from Denver.

As for Kerouac, the author of On the Road and Dharma Bums, he passed through Fraser in his continent-crossing traipses in the 1940s and 1950s. Fraser then was a logging and railroad town. This was before the interstate, and most travelers between Salt Lake and Denver used U.S. 40. Kerouac hung out a lot in Denver and San Francisco but made his home in New York City.

The likeness was created by Howard Neville and unveiled at the Fraser Valley Distillery. “I’m glad that we can unveil it here because this is basically what killed Jackson,” Neville said in a toast, alluding to the alcoholism that killed Kerouac at age 47. Neville, reports the Sky-Hi News, has created 47 miniature versions to sell.

For a time, they were welcomed. The Central Pacific Railway was built to Promontory Point in Utah in May 1869, thanks to nearly 20,000 Chinese. The rails laid, Chinese in Truckee worked as woodcutters to produce lumber needed for the silver mines of Virginia City’s Comstock Lodge, producing the wealth that produced the mansions of San Francisco.

There were also laundrymen, doctors and prostitutes, together comprising nearly a third of Truckee’s population in 1870.

Writing in the Sierra Sun, architectural historian Corri Jiminez explains that attitudes toward Chinese shifted when boom times ended and recession arrived. He cites articles in the Truckee Republican, which in 1875 found that Truckee’s Chinatown had “a very good appearance but just two years later reported that all the shops and places of business were uniformly ‘uncleanly and filthy.’”

The next year, there were three fires in Chinatown, believed to be caused by anti-Chinese vigilantes. The vigilantes, known as the Caucasian League, stepped up their efforts, boycotting businesses who employed Chinese. The newspaper stepped up its rhetoric, by 1882 referring to the “Chinese pestilence.” By 1886, the Chinese were gone from Truckee.

In Wyoming, it was worse. Chinese were willing to work for less money mining coal for the transcontinental railroad and in 1875 worked despite a strike. In 1885, white miners from the Knights of Labor massacred Chinese miners, leaving 28 dead and 15 injured.

There had also been race riots in the Seattle area and in Los Angeles.

How big is too big for houses in Aspen?

ASPEN – Aspen long has been favored by the world’s 1 percenters. This includes both liberals and conservatives, but especially the latter.

Two of the four Koch brothers, they of fossil fuel fame, now or in the past have owned places in or around Aspen. So did a Saudi prince, Bandar bin Sultan, who had a 56,000-square-foot house that he sold in 2012. That’s just the main house.

The buyer, hedge-fund billionaire John Paulson, was one of Trump’s campaign advisors in 2016. And it should be noted that the $24.5 million he paid for the sprawling Aspen digs comes in only second on his real-estate list. He paid $41 million for a place in Southampton, N.Y. This castle is outside Aspen proper, like other big homes. But even some lesser McMansions come in at 15,000 square feet. That’s the same size as the Pitkin County courthouse, points out Tony Vagneur, writing in The Aspen Times.

“If you’ve ever wandered through one of those big, bad boys, it’s reminiscent of wandering through an over-sized mausoleum or an outdated, empty hotel,” he writes. “Aloneness is a word that comes to mind, especially when they’re unoccupied so often. It’s hard to make a 15,000-square-foot house ring true to the meaning of ‘house,’ no matter what kind of art you hang on the wall.”

Now, the maximum size allowed is 5,750 square feet. However, by buying land elsewhere in the county and transferring the development rights from those, homes of 10,000 to 13,000 square feet remain possible.

Pitkin County officials – but not those in Aspen – have been talking for the last year about further limiting house sizes. Real estate agents, developers and architects in the Aspen area want to allow more larger homes. They have resisted any restrictions. Pitkin County officials will take up the matter again in late August.

The compromise Vagneur sees making sense is 7,500 square feet.

Energy use of the supersized homes figures into the debate. A 10,000-square-foot home doesn’t use 10 times more energy than a 1,000 square-foot home, a study found, but instead 30 times more energy. A house’s energy appetite escalates disproportionately beginning at 7,000 square feet.

Paul Andersen, also writing in The Aspen Times, says if the Aspen community “hopes to seriously confront climate change, it has to address the impacts of empty vacation homes, which cover ridgelines and mesas as a testament to the privilege of wealth.”

Why hasn’t the community crimped house sizes in line with their climate impacts?

Because, says Andersen, the topic remains “taboo in Aspen and Pitkin County, where an inconvenient truth is mostly unspoken: extravagant vacation homes contribute significantly to the pending crises of climate change.”

How to Strava like a local T

here’s such a thing as healthy competition, and then there’s Strava. Strava isn’t necessarily unhealthy, per se, but anxiety is, and every once in awhile I blame Strava for my mid-run stresses.

Strava is great, or whatever, because it tracks every tiny movement you make when you run, bike, or swim on an app that is obviously meant for triathletes and not people who just want to take their dog on a morning jog. It follows you

by GPS and records all of your stats including pace, elevation, your hopes and your dreams, then saves them into geographical segments so that next time you exercise, you can make sure that you do slightly worse on that big uphill and cry in shame before starting your Monday--or, if you don’t cry and if you beat your stats, you get a medal, and that feels pretty good.

I first downloaded the app on my phone so I could be in “healthy competition” with myself. I wanted to see the stats and get the medals. I wanted to be faster, stronger, and better--that is, until I suddenly started getting “followers”.

I’d had the app for a few weeks before I realized it was a social app; that my friends could see the days where I couldn’t make it up the hill and quite possibly saw me cry, too. They could see the days when I didn’t earn any medals or the days, or, weeks, I didn’t even go out at all. While I personally may have come to peace with popcorn and Netflix instead of “crushing” and “sending”, I can’t be certain that my Strava friends could. All this “following” made me feel a little selfconscious, anxious, and therefore, slightly unhealthy.

The obvious next step was to change my Strava settings to “private” and ignore all my follower requests, totally defeating the purpose of Strava to begin with, but I was still anxious on days with a headwind or when my dog needed to stop and sniff something because that meant my stats would be compromised and I wouldn’t get my medals and I needed my medals--give me my medals!!

This “healthy competition” was truly bringing out the worst in me so, one day while running, I decided to create my own version of a running and biking (not swimming, because, honestly, who uses it for swimming?) app that gives or takes away points based on situational variables; awarding points when there is an unavoidable hindrance and taking away points if you have noteworthy advantages. Making things a little more fair, a little less stressful, and a little more healthy.

I

first met Traci Moriarty, CPDT-KA at Wag Between Barks, after I found my first dog, Bodhi. He was a sweet dog, but as a rescue, he was a little skittish, and honestly, he was kind of glued to my feet. Wherever I went, Bodhi went, too, and there was no arguing about it. Luckily, I worked in a dog-friendly office, so I didn’t have to leave him at home all day, and he could loyally be by my feet 24 hours a day.

It was probably the 10th time I tripped over him and maybe the 100th time he got scared of my coworkers or people on the street when I knew I needed to do something about it. Since he was already on-edge and nervous, disciplining him wasn’t an option. I needed to find something special, something softer, something more positive.

Wag Between Barks was just that—in fact, that’s their claim to fame: training by using positive reinforcement. Studies have shown that using “force-free” methods—meaning no shocks, pain, fear, or any physical force—is more efficient, fair, and fun for both the dog and the handler. And, as it turns out, it was a much better way to handle my very nervous dog.

have to admit, it’s been awhile since I rode a bike. I used to love riding around; sun on my face, wind in my hair, but I’ve just gotten a little too busy. Being busy isn’t an excuse though when the weather is beautiful and so on a recent sunny day, I went into my garage to pick out an old bike to ride, but they were all in desperate need of a little TLC. So, one by one, I brought my old dusty bikes into Mountain Bike Specialists.

The minute I walked through the doors, I felt like I was stepping into a piece of bicycle heaven. It was a mecca of bikes, accessories, clothing and I was spinning in euphoria when a very friendly employee walked up to me, snapping me out of my dream and asked if there was anything he could help me with. I actually didn’t know how to respond because I was so overwhelmed with questions.

Once I learned about Traci’s methods, I became aware of the very extensive training she herself has had. No, she wasn’t taught to “sit” and “stay” by using delicious treats; instead, she spent over a year in an apprenticeship—learning and researching—and ultimately gained a CPDT, or Certified Professional Dog Trainer credential (which, I learned, is kind of a big deal).

I was there for a tune up, but I wanted to ask about the plethora of accessories lining the walls, I wanted to ask about all the different kinds of bikes on the floor, and about all the framed jerseys near the ceiling. I was curious about the pedal assist bikes, and the various mountain bikes in the windows. I was so giddy with excitement, in fact, that the employee had a hard time answering all of my questions at once. But eventually I let him tell me about the many offerings that could get me through any ride; short or long, road or mountain.

He told me about the quality bikes offered and knew a fountain of information as to what it would take to get me on the open road.

Being a CPDT means that Traci has to stay up-to-date on the most scientific advancements and studies in dog training. On top of that, she’s been a professional member of the Pet Professional Guild for several years, which requires following a strict code of conduct. For me—a dog owner who’s as wary of people touching my dog as my dog is wary of people, this was very reassuring. Bodhi seemed like he would be in good hands.

But then, what really caught me interest, was all the framed bike jerseys hanging high up on the walls. It turns out, the downtown shop also holds a museum of bike jerseys from cycling celebrities that make the industry so much fun, including World Champion Ned Overend, and Olympians, Travis Brown, Ruthie Mathes, Todd Wells and Howard Grotts. In fact, I was told that if I stuck around long enough I might even run into some of these pros inside the shop.

I looked at the classes that Wag Between Barks offered and had a hard time choosing among them. I wanted Bodhi to do it all: basic manners, puppy classes, Canine Good Citizen, outdoor manners (including dinner on the Homeslice Pizza patio), therapy dog classes, senior-only classes, and private one-on-one classes. Obviously I wanted to go eat some pizza at Homeslice, but I figured a basic manners class would be a great start for Bodhi—maybe followed by pizza later if he was good.

That got me a little too excited and I started asking too many questions again.

Luckily, the employee was super patient, very kind, and happy to engage in my inquiries. Then he looked down at the old clunker I’d brought in to get fixed and asked if he could take that off my hands, understanding exactly why I’d brought it into the store to begin with.

I was nervous to drop Bodhi off because of his behavior history, but Traci immediately established a gentle rapport with him. She was understanding of his nervousness, and instead of jumping straight into obedience, she eased in with basic manners, something Bodhi has always had a hard time with. She was so good with Bodhi that, when it was time to pick him up, it kind of felt like he wanted to hang out with her a little longer.

That all changed, though, when I told him we were getting pizza.

After Bodhi’s class was done, walking him downtown and taking him to my office was much easier. He was less reactive to people and would listen to my commands. He was as happy to work with me on his new skills as he was happy to follow in my footsteps.

It’s so much easier to have a dog who listens to me and is well-mannered. Little does he know that, although he did so well, he might have to take all of Traci’s classes, which I think he’ll love. signed, will sit for pizza

The shop offered a full fix and tune up from some of the most highly skilled professionals in the bicycle industry. They, too, were friendly and ever though I knew I shouldn’t, they let me watch what they were doing anyway. Even better, they talked me through some of the basic mechanics of bicycle maintenance. I also learned from them that Mountain Bike Specialists was named a “top cycling retailer” by Bicycle Retailer & Industry News as well as being the major sponsor of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic since 1972. I simply stood there, mouth agape, until the mechanic, again, had to snap me out of my stuper to offer me back my freshly tuned bike. I took it home that evening with gratitude and images of big trails and fast hills speeding through my head--maybe I’ll try to go neck and neck with the pros in a big race--you never know.

Taste the lime, smell the roses

ime is available all year but is never more in season then summer. Hot times mean an increase in the need for thirst management, a task for which limes are exceptionally qualified.

The Caribbean coast of Colombia us no stranger to limes, thirst or some quenching places where the two intersect. In Santa Marta, I had a lesson in how to make a cool, frothy beverage called limonada de coco. A mix of coconut milk, lime and sugar, there isn’t a lot to it.

But in teaching me his special method, chef Jairo Villafane, taught me a trick that changed my lime game for good. I have not seen or heard of this technique anywhere else, including countless recipes for limonada de coco I have read.

Villafane comes from a long line of great cooks, all of them women, and has cooked in several prestigious restaurants. In his small home kitchen, he wore a hair covering and a bright pink polo shirt. He washed six limes and cut them in half. I assumed he would juice them with a hand-held lime squeezer, an ubiquitous tool in the region. Instead, he put them in a blender, covered them with water, and blended them briefly until the lime was thoroughly worked but still composed of recognizable bits.

He then poured the chunks through a strainer, and squeezed the remains to get as much juice out as possible.

Every other recipe for limonada de coco uses plain lime juice, which is a waste of both time and lime once you know Jairo’s trick. His method yields more lime flavor per lime, and quickly. Beyond the limonada de coco, Villafane’s blender technique can be used in the making

of other limey dishes too, from marinades to sauces to other drinks. In almost any instance where lime is called for, the blender trick will help.

It works on lemons, too. As I’ve written previously, lemons can be blended (without the seeds) all the way into a zesty, versatile foam that improves lemonade, lemon bars and everything in between.

But lime is too potent for that. Its flavor is more complex than a lemon’s.

The two fruit are similarly acidic, but a lemon’s acid comes exclusively from citric acid, while a lime contains a cocktail of acids, including citric, malic and succinic acids.

Limes also contain bitter notes that are absent from the flavor of a lemon. A lime is like a tangled jungle of acids and bitters, while a lemon is just a simple, bright sunbeam. A blended lime, including all of that skin and pith, is simply too bitter. But via partial blending, a la Jairo Villafante, the technique extracts all of the juice and just enough extra to make it a little more interesting.

This week, in my northern vacation spot, Jairo’s limonada de coco has made me some new friends. As I have tweaked the recipe, volunteer tasters have not been hard to find. During my research, some of my co-vacationers determined that limonada de coco makes a good base for a modified Moscow Mule. But ultimately, I took my drink in a different direction, adding strawberries and rose petals, and sometimes a shot of gin.

The flavors in my rosy, strawberry limonada de coco work together seamlessly. The result is complex, yet smooth; sweet, bitter and totally quenching.

This recipe depends not only on the blender technique

but also a rose petal trick, researched with petals from the salt air roses that grow wild in my summer hideaway, and confirmed with unsprayed landscape roses. Like the blender technique, the rose trick is broadly applicable.

You don’t consume the rose petals, but smell them as you eat or drink your way around them. Their sweet fragrance tricks your taste buds into thinking the drink is sweeter than it is, while drawing out the floral notes of the strawberries.

The perfumey feel would be tarnished if you actually chewed a petal and tasted its soapy flavor. Instead, smell the roses and taste the fruit. It’s summer, after all.

This recipe is broken into two parts. The first part is for a classic limonada de coco, followed by my modified, rosy strawberry version. Remember not to add ice until the end. Otherwise the coconut milk will congeal unpleasantly. On that note, Jairo maintains that for this drink, canned coconut milk is preferable to homemade.

Stop and Smell the Roses Serves 2 2 limes, cut into quarters (or halves, if your blender is as good as Jairo’s) ½ cup water 2 Tablespoons sugar (or to taste) ½ can coconut milk Handful of strawberries Ice Rose petals, rinsed Blend the lime and water until it’s somewhere between chopped and a slurry, with large chunks that are recognizably lime-based, about three to 10 seconds, depending on the blender. Pour this through a strainer, squeezing the remains to get all the juice. Pour the lime extract back in the blender, add the coconut milk and sugar, and blend. You now have a classic limonada de coco.

To make it a Coconut Rose, add strawberries and blend again. Toss the rose petals with the ice and put some rosy cubes in a glass. Add gin to the rosy ice if desired.

Pour the pink frothy drink over the rosy ice, and garnish with more petals.

You are now clear to smell the roses and quench your thirst, all in a single sip. n

And what better way than to highlight Colorado’s lesser-known but nonetheless spectacular array of 13,000foot peaks?

Roach will be in town tonight (Thurs., June 27) to present a talk on his latest book, Colorado Thirteeners. (His seminal guidebook, Colorado Fourteeners, was published more than 20 years ago but still remains a classic.)

In more than 50 years of mountaineering, Roach has climbed all over the world, including 12 Alaskan expeditions, 10 Andean expeditions, and seven Himalayan expeditions, including Mount Everest. He is also the second person ever to climb the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. Closer to home, Roach has climbed more than 1,200 named peaks in Colorado, including all the Fourteeners, which he completed (for the first time) in 1975. Roach lives in Boulder with his wife and climbing partner, Jennifer.
