“After an extensive process, it became clear that the uncertainty associated with the condition of the course and the issues that the uncertainty caused among our organizational components meant we could not organize and administer a safe and meaningful 2019 Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run that was consistent with the standards and values Hardrock has become known for,” Run Director Dale Garland said in a press release. “While snow and snow-water equivalent levels looked to be dropping to manageable levels, other issues such as unprecedented avalanche debris, unstable snow bridges and high water all contributed to us reaching the tough final decision.”

Race organizers announced the decision Monday morning, noting that snow, debris and other obstacles existed on more than 40 percent of the course. According to organizers, the decision to cancel was based on course reconnaissance, trail reports, and input from local Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service officials.

This will mark the third time the race has been cancelled in its 27-year history. Other cancellations years were 1995 (too much snow) and 2002 (forest fires).

All runners entered in the race will have the option to roll their entry over to the 2020 or withdraw their entry slot and receive a full refund. Entrants must notify Garland by July 12 at: dale@hardrock100.com if they wish to withdraw.

Otherwise, they will be considered to have elected to roll over their entry to 2020. Any withdrawals after July 12 will receive the usual 50 percent refund. The wait lists, as they stand on June 10, will also roll over to 2020 and any slots that open up will be filled from them. There will not be a lottery for the 2020 Hardrock and no additional applications will be taken. Runners will not be required to do another qualifier to run the 2020 Hardrock.

LaVidaLocal Haberdashed My mother recently sent me a link in an email. Now I know that when mothers send links in emails, the links usually lead to videos that were funny in 2004, or expired pages on their local newspapers’ websites, or news that Bill Gates wants to give me (me!) a new computer. But this particular email link was useful, because it led to a list of high-quality items that a person need purchase only once in life because of their durability. You know, things like a Stanley thermos or a vasectomy.

I happened to be in the market for a new blender, so I figured I’d listen to Mom and spend a little extra for one that will last me until climate change ends civilization as we know it. But the whole blender idea went downhill as fast as a California mudslide as soon as I walked into the hat shop.

It’s no secret that I like hats. I like how the right hat can make me feel like Humphrey Bogart and look like Willie Nelson’s progeny. I like the air of mystery when the brim veils my visage. I especially like wearing a hat to restaurants, where there’s no place to hang it anymore because that courtesy died with American isolationism and comprehensible jazz somewhere before 1950 so you have to cradle your hat on your lap while eating or else leave it jauntily perched atop your noggin despite the rule preached in elementary school that boys can’t wear hats inside even though girls can and that rule makes no sense anymore now that we’re pretending to care about gender equality.

Because I like hats so, and because there’s not a custom hat shop where I live, of course I walked into the hat shop in this unfamiliar town. Of course I tried them on. Of course I asked about the base price after learning that every hat in the joint was custom-made. And of course I would have normally dropped the hats like a hot pork pie and bolted from the premises after hearing the cost of a custom lid.

But I – I listen to my mother. I understand the value of a purchase that will last me the rest of my lifetime, so long as I don’t encounter any stiff breezes.

So I asked the good (and not at all mad) hatter to size me up and hat me.

And I am glad I did. The entire process taught me a great deal about the craft of millinery. For starters, I learned that millinery is hatmaking for women. Men just get hats. I also learned that haberdashery, although fun to say, is not in fact hatmaking, but I had already purchased the title of this column before learning that.

Furthermore, did you know that a hat becomes a tax-deductible expense the moment it, and the experience of acquiring it, becomes the central premise of a newspaper column? It’s true, I hope! Because this hat is the first purchase in my lifetime that has required a deposit on commissioned work.

You see, unlike what any reasonable consumer might expect upon ordering a tailored accessory, a hat isn’t made in a day. The shop didn’t close for an entire half hour after I placed my order, yet the man said I’d have to come by at a later date to collect my hat. All he could do with me sitting there staring at him is size my head.

I imagine a standard head-sizing doesn’t sound like a big deal to many of you, unless you too grew up hearing commentary from your mother about the girth of your head and how you’re lucky to have even made it through the birth canal. I expected that the hatter’s Velcro headband wouldn’t even make it around my skull. He’d have to call for reinforcements. I’d be told that custom hats don’t come in plus sizes, and that my deposit was nonrefundable. I nearly fled the shop.

But I worked through the sweat and the shakes, and it turned out that my head is a perfectly normal large size, even if it is indented on one side, making me look rather like a lima bean. Like a kid who did a good job at the dentist, I got to pick out my very own feathers from a box of feathers, and the kind hatter attached them to my hat for me when I picked it up before leaving town.

He told me this hat would last me a lifetime. And you know what? He’s right. Because for what it cost, you better believe I’m never wearing this thing outside the house.

Let facts rule the abortion debate To the editor, It is important to understand the facts before choosing to side one way or the other. With today’s constant use of social media, we have to fact check, look at the evidence and remember that the issues still exist the next day and in the weeks after. Just because you click away from something doesn’t mean you can disregard it. The issue of abortion is not a women’s issue, it’s a human issue.

Consider these facts from various sources: • The population of the United States in 2015 sat at 321 million, out of this, 638,169 women had an abortion.

This is 0.197 percent of the population, or 11.8/1,000 women aged 15-44 years.

• Abortion rates have steadily fallen in recent years with the availability of and education about contraceptives playing a large role in this reduction.

• The survivable age for a baby is 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Even then, there is only 20-35 percent survival rate. Babies born before 27 weeks are likely to have to fight for survival and go on to live with long-term health problems.

• In 2015, 91.1 percent of abortions were at or prior to 13 weeks, 7.6 percent were performed between 14-20 weeks and 1.3 percent after 21 weeks.

• Miscarriages occur in about 10 percent of recognized pregnancies and often have the same symptoms of an induced abortion.

• Four states have passed “heart beat” bills this year meaning that abortion is banned at six weeks or earlier.

• If these laws go into effect, those who miscarry as well as their doctors will be pulled into legal investigations when symptoms are similar. The rates of illegal and dangerous abortions also will inevitably go up.

• The new abortion law in New York says that lateterm abortions (after 24 weeks) may be performed

“when necessary to protect a woman’s life or health” or within the case of a stillborn. This law is not a free for all, nor is it easy or in any way wanted by any woman to get a late-term abortion.

• In general, those who seek abortions later in pregnancy have learned about a major fetal abnormality that will cause the baby to die late in pregnancy, right after birth or experience major health problems.4

• Although few, some abortions take place due to rape or an incestuous relationship (1.5 percent). This is the only form of abortion currently funded by Medicaid.

• About 60 percent of women who obtain abortions have given birth one or more times prior to this decision.

Abortion is not something anyone wants. The name “pro-life” is not a fitting or fair description of those against abortion. No one wants to have an abortion, to see someone they love have to make the decision to have one, to have a pregnancy so dangerous that you have to have an abortion. No one wants a child to have to suffer when they come into this world and to have to fight to live, or a mother to die as a result of ignorance to risks – not “prolife” advocates or “pro-choice” advocates. The more appropriate name for those against abortion would be “anti-choice.”

You cannot realistically be against abortion and not in favor of the use of birth control. It is far too contradictory. The highest rates of teen pregnancy come from places that teach abstinence only.

Pregnancy and children are wonderful parts of life, however, there is a time and a place. The right to choose this time should not be taken away. And to be raped and forced into a lifetime of remembering is cruel. To make a woman carry a fatally disabled or stillborn baby to full term is cruel. Men are affected by abortion too, and it’s time for us to stand up for each other.

I understand fully that there is a heavy religious influence on thoughts of abortion. You absolutely have the right to hold these values. You absolutely do not have the right to force these values upon anyone else.

This is an ongoing discussion, and people have to participate but at the same time be accepting of the evidence that sits in front of them. And when you log onto social media tomorrow and the next day, keep the conversation going, write letters, participate actively in your beliefs.

Don’t let someone else decide for you.

Freedom from tyranny of Trump

Zero suicide more than just hope

To the Editor, Our so-called president has a long history of lying, averaging several lies a day since his inauguration. He’s doubled down on lies that have been soundly debunked.

Such as that the Mueller Report totally exonerated him of obstruction charges. In fact, the obstruction is ongoing.

He rages against “fake news,” meaning the hated factbased media that calls him out on all his lies. He calls them the enemy of the people, modeling the likes of Hitler and Stalin.

He’s also well known for accusing political opponents of doing the things he himself does and is, such as “Lying Ted,” “Crooked Hillary” and most recently “Crazy Nancy.”

He’s well known for his pettiness and vindictiveness. He’s worked to sabotage our intelligence and national security agencies in favor of what foreign dictators tell him.

Now he accuses those agencies of trying to carry out a coup against him. He directed his loyal minion William Barr to selectively declassify any information that might support that claim.

He’s doing a good job (aided by his Republican minions in Congress) of sabotaging the checks and balances the Constitution set up with three equal branches of government. He’s trying to claim the power to define what constitutes treason and who is committing it – anyone who mocks or criticizes Himself. Get ready Guantanamo.

Fortunately, the Constitution actually says what constitutes treason.

Trump and members of Congress have taken an oath to protect the Constitution. But Trump insists that his minions give their first loyalty to him, not our country or the Constitution. They have complied, betraying their oath of office. The biggest threat now is those domestic enemies.

The real coup is happening right now in plain sight – Trump’s coup against the Constitution and the rule of law.

So what will you be celebrating this Fourth of July??

To the editor, I’ll start out my letter with a question: How many of you know someone who has attempted or died by suicide? I suspect there are a lot. Why did 1,175 Coloradans die from suicide in 2017? It’s a simple question with many complicated answers. The gut-wrenching statistic is that suicide is the leading cause of death among 10- 24 year-olds, and we have one of the highest suicide rates in the nation. It is estimated that up to 50 percent of those who die by suicide have seen a primary care provider within the previous month. Thirty percent have seen a behavior health provider in the previous month.

In 1999, The Henry Ford Medical Group in Detroit implemented a “Zero Suicide Prevention” system of care, which was named the “Blues Busters.” The plan had lofty goals: screen everyone using an evidence-based screening tool, then determine who is at risk for self-harm or suffering from other behavioral issues, such as depression or anxiety. Their protocols also included an integrated and coordinated system of care that also emphasized evidence-based therapies.

The results were astounding, and within a few years, the system was implemented within their primary care departments. From 1999-2009, they had an 80 percent reduction in suicides including zero suicides in 2009. The North Central Health Care System in Wisconsin, which cares for 10,000 lives, saw zero suicides in 2015 following implementation of a similar system.

In 2016, Colorado Senate Bill 16-147 passed, which allowed for the creation of a Colorado suicide prevention model based on the Zero Suicide model. Regretfully, there were no funds appropriated for this bill.

Zero Suicide is more than just a hope. I urge all of you to call or e-mail our Joint Budget Committee members and ask them to approve funding for this important first step.

n the words of the great Salt-N-Pepa, let’s talk about sex (baby.) There, we said it.

Now that we have your attention, rest assured it won’t be us doing the talking. Rather, we’re going to a real, live sex expert – otherwise known as a sexologist. Think of her as our very own Dr. Ruth, but taller and with way better hair.

If you are thinking to yourself, “Sexology? Bah humbug – that isn’t a thing,” well, you’d be wrong (and missing out on all the fun.)

At least according to Gloria Kaasch-Buerger, a longtime local and Fort Lewis College graduate. Kaasch-Buerger, 35, recently completed her six-month sexologist coaching certification (in four months, we might add) from the Dr. Rachael Institute and subsequently launched her local sexual coaching practice, Intimacy for Everyone. In addition to one-on-one sessions, Kaasch-Buerger offers workshops, special ladies nights and couples sessions. (*Sorry guys. Although Kaasch-Buerger loves you, her primary area of expertise right now is the ladies.)

“I want to help women open up about what we’re not supposed to talk about,” said Kaasch-Buerger. “It’s not just about intercourse but rediscovering our bodies.”

For Kaasch-Buerger, that rediscovery was a long, painful

• Believe it or not, there is more than one sexologist in town. Erin Brandt, who has a master’s degree in forensic sexology, is the owner, coach and facilitator for Birds and Bees.

About 10 years ago, the young mountain-bike guide, ski instructor and newlywed was beset with excruciating pain in her pelvis. She was found to have an ovarian cyst, which was removed. However, when she went back to riding her bike and resuming regular activity, the pain persisted. A few months later, it was discovered there was another cyst on her other ovary.

“And that’s when it got complicated,” she recalled.

The pain continued, accompanied by other symptoms.

Doctors were stumped, and what ensued was a not-somerry-go-round of 11 pelvic surgeries (including a hysterectomy) as well as trips to dozens of doctors and specialists throughout the country.

“I lost count at 54,” she said.

Despite all this – and crushing medical bills – there was still no diagnosis for her symptoms and the pain only grew worse. According to Kaasch-Buerger, the pain became a negative feedback loop, where the longer it went on, the more chronic it became. Over the years, it began consuming her life, forcing her to quit the activities she loved, straining her marriage and affecting a new job she had landed with the City Manager’s Office.

“The whole time I was down, I just wanted to get back to my old life, I had just gotten my master’s degree in public policy,” she recalled. “But you kind of don’t have a choice in life.”

Then, as if things couldn’t get any worse, in 2015, Kaasch-Burger nearly died due to complications from her previous surgeries. She spent seven days in a hospital, and despite an effort to fix the problems, ended up bedridden and on disability – and still in pain.

“I had no hope. I started staying in bed, there was a hospital bed in our downstairs,” she said. “I watched every single episode of ‘Star Trek.’”

She was on 19 different prescribed medications and was so afraid that anything she ate would cause more pain, that she pretty much gave up eating. Her life became a revolving door of E.R. trips – as many as 15 in one month.

It was during one of these trips that a local doctor 4

spotted the tell-tale symptoms of interstitial cystitis, aka “painful bladder disorder.” Believed to be an autoimmune disease, it causes inflammation of the lining of the bladder and affects mostly women. The doctor’s intuition turned out to be right. “It was nice to finally have a diagnosis,” KaaschBuerger said.

She found a neurologist in Denver who specialized in IC who was willing to perform a somewhat experimental surgery on her. It entailed implanting a pace-maker to interrupt the pain signal between her bladder and spinal cord. Gradually, the $215,000 procedure began to relieve some of her pain. And while she felt better physically, the numerous surgeries and complications – including an infection that required another surgery – took its toll.

“I started feeling a little better, but didn’t realize how much PTSD I had,” she said.

Not only was she living in constant fear of pain, she also winced at the thought of intimacy – something most of her doctors failed to address.

“During that whole time only two doctors ever asked me about sex. I needed someone to ask me, ‘How do we help?’” she recalled. “I felt ashamed. I thought I wasn’t supposed to talk about it.”

In addition, her disability insurance cut her off after the pace-maker surgery, forcing she and husband, Brian, to deal with the crippling medical costs on their own.

“That’s when I knew I had to change everything,” Kaasch-Buerger said.

She began seeing a pain coach in California via Skype, as well as local therapists and

pelvic floor specialists to help her manage her condition. “We have a great group of women here,” she said.

It was with their help that she learned to listen to her body’s signals to better manage the pain.

Eventually, Kaasch-Buerger started a Facebook group dedicated to pelvic pain and intimacy issues called Hurts So Good, and before long, she had 600 members. At last, she found a calling and a way to turn her pain into something positive.

“I realized I was really passionate about it,” she said.

It was one of Kaasch-Buerger’s local therapists who encouraged her to pursue sexology professionally and share her knowledge in the hopes of helping others.

“It sounded like a niche,” KaaschBuerger said.

Using a combination of techniques learned from her pain coach, local therapists and sexology course, Kaasch-Buerger’s goal is to help other women get over their pain and fear by using the power of their bodies.

“Pleasure is the antidote to pain, why not use it?” she said.

She noted her role is only as a coach and not a therapist – that is left to the professionals. “My goal is not to re-traumatize but to move forward,” she said. “I am a sexual life empowerment coach. I help build them back up using their sexuality.”

She said the key is for women to trust their intuition and listen to their bodies – something she wished she had begun doing much earlier in her illness. “A lot of women

We just rely on what we did before.”

Kaasch-Buerger held her first event in March – which included, among other things, making clay replicas of certain lady parts (the same one from the infamous “Seinfeld” episode). It was followed by another special Mother’s Day workshop, which also attracted a capacity crowd. Buoyed by the

success, more sexual empowerment workshops are planned this summer, in addition to her private coaching. Her goal is to eventually create a sexual empowerment group with regular “mingle” events, with fun activities to break the ice and get women talking, and healing.

“That feeling of being alone is really hard,” she said. “It’s nice to know someone else has been through it.” n

Scoping begins on Silverton travel plan BLM proposal includes 30 miles of new singletrack in Baker’s Park, other trails

he plan to bring more singletrack to Silverton is rolling forward. Last week, the Bureau of Land Management announced the beginning of a 30-day public scoping period on its proposed Silverton Area Travel Management Plan. The plan, which covers 50,000 acres, includes 30 miles of new mountain biking and hiking trails in Baker’s Park, an area northeast of town also known as Storm or Boulder Mountain. The BLM plan also includes allowing motorized use on a portion of the Minnie Gulch Trail as well as a new 3-mile trail near Animas Forks; a new 3-mile foot trail near the Sound Democrat Mine; and formally designating about 25 miles of existing trails.

“Roads and trails on public lands are very important to the economy of Silverton and San Juan County,” Gunnison Field Manager Elijah Waters said. “This plan is an opportunity for the BLM to be a good neighbor by supporting local efforts toward travel management and responding to their vision for the future.”

The first two phases of the project, which cover 20 to 25 miles, could cost $720,000 - $1.5 million, according to the groups’ plan.

According to the BLM, all new routes would require a formal trail maintenance agreement with an organization prior to being built, and continued use of the trails would be subject to satisfactory maintenance. The BLM would work with partners and granting organizations to secure funds to build the new trails.

Earlier this year, the Town of Silverton

and San Juan County also approved a much broader and expansive trails proposal called the “Silverton Area Trails Plan.” In addition to the 30 miles of trail in the Baker’s Park area, the town and county plan also calls for several more new trails to be built over the next 30 years. However, those trails are not covered in the BLM’s latest proposal, although the BLM has left the door open for future discussion.

“There is not enough information to analyze the full town and county proposal in this document,” BLM spokesman Brant Porter stated. “However, the conceptual pods and trails in the Silverton Trails Plan would be analyzed in separate (environmental analyses) as proponents develop

their proposals more fully.”

Porter said as far as the trails that are covered in the proposal, each would have to undergo its own environmental study prior to construction. He said the BLM hopes to have the plan finalized by the end of the year, with work beginning in 2020.

In addition to the trails contained in the proposal, the BLM is also seeking input from the public on other current and future transportation needs.

MountainTownNews And now the snow has started to roar SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – And now the water roars, as the giant snowpack of winter – augmented by an uncommonly cold and wet spring – begins to melt.

Parts of California got up to 400 percent of average snowfall in “Mayuary.”

“That monster snowpack is about to come melting down the slopes through rivers and streams with ferocity, pushing an already fast water flow into a furious rage,” the Tahoe Daily Tribune wrote.

At the California Weather Blog, meteorologist Daniel Swain suggests a big view of weather extremes across North America: floods in Nebraska, tornadoes in Oklahoma, a massive forest fire in Canada, and record heat in the Arctic. They’re all connected, he points out.

Emerging evidence suggests that such weather extremes may be occurring with greater frequency and intensity as the Arctic continues to warm faster than the rest of the planet.

“Interestingly, though, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the impacts we experienced in 2019 will be exactly the same the next time this pattern repeats,” Swain explains on his blog. Every iteration of the “wavy jet stream” produces new patterns of warmth vs. coolness and very wet vs. very dry.

Utility co-op election competition lively EDWARDS – Larissa Read’s election to the Board of Directors of Holy Cross Energy was unusual in that she had to top three other candidates. The Vail Daily reports she got 39 percent of the votes compared to 27 percent for the first runner up.

Elections of directors for Holy Cross and other rural electrical cooperatives have traditionally attracted little notice. This one was no exception in that only 6.9 percent of members voted.

But often there is only one candidate, and rarely more than two, for any spot. The difference may lie in the emerging prominence of Holy Cross in its concerted effort to decarbonize the electricity that it delivers to the Vail, Aspen and other areas along Interstate 70 in western Colorado.

Canmore mascot likely to be replaced CANMORE, Alberta – It appears that the Crusaders, as a mascot, will soon be replaced at Canmore Collegiate High School. A student group has settled on Coyotes, Wolverines and Cyclones as candidates for the replacement.

This was triggered by a letter to students in March from the school principal, Chris Rogers. His letter talked about the need to “ensure an inclusive, safe and caring school for all.”

The name crusaders, like many other words, has several shades.

The broader meaning is that of a person who campaigns vigorously for political, social or religious change. The more narrow meaning refers to those who participated in religious wars sanctioned by the Latin church in Medieval times.

One person who had come up with the name Crusaders 40 years ago told the Rocky Mountain Outlook that it was the first, broader meaning that was intended. What, then, to make of the shield and sword that are part of the mascot? They’re a clear allusion to the religious soldiers dispatched to the Middle East.

Ruth Suffield, a teacher who is overseeing the student commit-

tee, told the Rocky Mountain Outlook she was confused by the name herself.

“I just recently spent quite a bit of time studying Islam, understanding the (Middle East) better and the tensions that exist between our countries and Islamic countries, so I can’t not notice the historical references of Crusaders to the Christian Crusaders in the past,” she said.

“I think it’s true that lots of students and perhaps people in the valley didn’t associate Crusaders as necessarily negative,” the teacher added. But it was useful to have the discussions about how the mascot might be perceived by others, such that they might not feel very welcome.

Also under the heading of inclusivity, the municipality of Canmore will be working with students from the high school to find a prominent location for a rainbow sidewalk, the symbol of acceptance for varying kinds of sexuality.

Whistler fans multiply with NBA finals WHISTLER, B.C. – It wasn’t quite like it would have been had the Montreal Canadiens been playing the San Jose Sharks for the Stanley Cup, but the excitement in Whistler on Monday night was notable nonetheless.

The Toronto Raptors played the Golden State Warriors in a winor-go-home game for the latter team, and the bars in Whistler were full.

Whistler has its basketball fans but they mostly fly under the radar in a town obsessed first with hockey but also downhill skiing, mountain biking and other outdoor pursuits, reports Clare Ogilvie, editor of Pique Newsmagazine. But the NBA playoffs this year has made fans of others – including herself.

“Now everybody is on the bandwagon, and people are going into bars all over the place and finding places to cheer,” Ogilvie reports.

Oakland, home of the Warriors, is closer to Whistler than Toronto. But in this case, national pride matters more than physical proximity. “We have only one team (in the NBA), unlike America, where there are a lot of basketball teams at this level,” she says.

The Warriors won the game, leaving the series tied at 3-3 and forcing a game 7 in Oakland.

Vail is mum about Crested Butte plans CRESTED BUTTE – Crested Butte Mountain Resort has the final approval it needs for a major expansion of ski terrain. The Forest Service OK’d the addition of 500 acres plus three new lifts to service intermediate and advanced terrain. The Crested Butte News reports that Vail Resorts, the ski area owner, has not yet disclosed what it intends to do with this expansion, which was initiated by the previous owners.

Uranium mining unlikely near Telluride TELLURIDE – About an hour and a half west of Telluride, where the San Juan Mountains give way to sandstone canyons, uranium mining occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. Then, it went away, leaving a number of messes.

It does not look to be resuming again any time soon. There had been considerable worry among environmental groups in Telluride, and the town itself, about potential for resumption of uranium mining and processing. The most significant worry was about creation of a new Piñon Ridge Uranium Mill, with the possibility for radioactive dust to blow into the town’s watershed.

The Telluride Daily Planet points to a paradox. A federal judge recently issued a decision that ends a seven-year ban on uranium mining in the Naturita-Paradox Valley west of Telluride. But this also means that the Department of Energy can get to work on stalled-out reclamation plans in the area.

Energy Fuels, the proponent of the Piñon Ridge mill, has shifted its focus to other projects and no longer has much stake in its leases in the area.

“They are really not in our short- or medium-term plans,” Energy Fuels spokesman Curtis Moore said. “There are some resources out there, and a lot of those are former mines operated in the 1950s and 1960s. The mines could still operate, but it would take a lot of work to bring them into compliance with modern regulations. It’s not a priority for us.”

What’s the meaning of it all? The answers, of course, are less important than the process of asking the questions themselves. And 20MOONS dance company is taking on one of the Big Unanswerables – What is

true? – with its upcoming performance, “Between Vigilance and Sleeping.”

“The show is this continuing contemplation and deepening of the question,” Jessica Perino, co-artistic director, said. “It’s less about the answer and more about the act of questioning and searching and exploring.”

The choice of deep question for this show is far from random. In the fall of 2018, the dance theater 4

company hosted a community performance art event called “What is True?” where, for 38 consecutive hours, Durango denizens delved into the question in the Durango Arts Center gallery. There were no direct conversations between participants, and the 20Moons cast members didn’t hold dialogues with anyone.

But nonetheless, about 250 people addressed what is true through movement, speaking, sitting in silence, sleeping, writing on the walls, and witnessing others in that space.

“We were really inspired by everybody who came and offered their thoughts,” Anne Bartlett, 20MOONS’ other co-artistic director, said. “The papers that were on all of the walls were completely full of writing and drawing. So we wanted to use that as a springboard for this show.”

Now those who are familiar with 20MOONS understand that their style of contemporary dance theater is constantly growing and changing (thus, making it contemporary). It’s a cutting-edge experience often reserved for larger metropolitan art centers of the world. For those who are less familiar with the company, or with the art form, the “theater” component has much more to do with performance quality than with common theatrical structures.

“Between Vigilance and Sleeping” doesn’t have acts or a plot, per se; rather, it uses music, spoken word and dance to journey into the human experience.

Still not sure what to expect from the show? Good, one might say. It’s meant to be experienced more than understood – much like the big questions themselves. But if you’re still trying to wrap your mind

around dance theater, it might help to understand it as a multidisciplinary art form.

“I don’t just have to dance,” Perino said.

“I can use any means necessary to explore or share a message or ask a question. There’s so much freedom and excitement in that potential. It really opens up collaboration amidst friends and community members.

The words recorded on the wallmounted scrolls are also serving as inspiration for the show’s musical directors and performers, Jeroen van Tyn and Jon Bailey,

“We keep coming closer to the heart of who we are...how we work with words, text, music ... we’re working more closely with poetry.”

Perino explained that she and the rest of the cast gathered deep impressions from witnessing and sharing space with the community during “What is True?” The company members brought their individual impressions together in the 20MOONS rehearsal space and began collaboratively shaping the then-undefined performance to come.

“It’s interesting to see how (those impressions) are playing out in the work that we’re creating now, because we weren’t explicitly bringing that in,” she said. “But it’s coming in anyway as we’re creating the show. I’m doing a lot of photography and

who are playing what Bartlett calls “soundscapes and compositions” throughout the performance. The lyrics are all coming from the guests’ words written on the scrolls, and other writings are being spoken by cast members. Still other pieces of spoken word performance are poems written by the cast and inspired by their impressions.

In these and other ways, “Between Vigilance and Sleeping” represents new directions for the dance theater company. This should come as little surprise given that for seven years now, 20MOONS has thrived on creative self-expression and pushing its own boundaries. For instance, the company often performs in nontraditional spaces, and this one, on the Main-

Stage Theater at Fort Lewis College, is an exciting exception to that rule. For once, the cast isn’t having to create the physical space from scratch.

“I feel like we keep coming closer and closer to the heart of who we are, in terms of how we work with the elements of words, texts, music,” Perino said. “It keeps getting more refined and clear. This is a show where we’re working more closely with poetry than we ever have, and also with a lot of really developed choreography.

A lot of our shows are improvisational, and this is a highly choreographed piece in comparison to other shows we’ve done.”

After seven years of co-directing shows, both Bartlett and Perino are finding themselves continually surprised by the process.

Bartlett explained how they have made a conscious decision as directors to be open to the unknown and allow ideas and input from everyone in the company when developing a performance. She feels the company thrives on inspiration and allowing the mystery to work through them, because the right things always emerge in the end.

Speaking of working with the mystery, Bartlett admitted that even with the show opening this week, it’s not yet complete. It can’t be, she said, until it’s performed with an audience.

“The last piece is when the audience comes,” she said. “Our pieces aren’t complete until the audience arrives, because a big piece of it is that interaction and getting the feedback and sharing and feeling the audience’s response. It’s not done yet. It’ll keep evolving as we get people to the show.” n

Give me a beet

I

f nobody told you it was chocolate beet cake, you’d simply think it was a magnificent fudge bar, moist like a rainforest, rich like a truffle and creamy like cheesecake. It is what it is because of root vegetables, not in spite of them. The fact that a single piece of this decadence contains two servings of vegetables and half a day’s worth of fiber only compounds the satisfaction.

Though it tastes nothing of beet and carrot, their sweet and bitter flavors subtly enhance the impact of the cocoa powder, flanking its bitter tones with their own harmonies like background vocalists. The beets and carrots give a starchy, sturdy thickness, along with sweetness. You can bake this cake with very little added sugar – or if you’re truly hardcore, none at all.

Beets and carrots are both in season year-round, because they are always available either fresh or in the cooler.

This means you can make this cake with local, fresh ingredients in any season.

But this time of year, which happens to be my birthday season, is the high season for chocolate beet cake.

I came to this conclusion while tweaking the recipe ahead of my birthday, with beets and carrots from the farmer’s market. In spring, many vendors have baby beets by the bunch for sale alongside big storage beets harvested last fall. The same goes with carrots: bunches of small new carrots with the tops still on, for sale next to big old carrots from last year.

I brought home young and old specimens from each species and ran side-by-side trials with zero added sugar.

My impression was that new carrots and old beets make the best chocolate beet cake. The new carrots are more sweet and juicy, while the old carrots are drier and more “carroty.” These differences are subtle, however, compared to the differences in new vs. old beets. The small,

new beets bunched with leaves attached have a more intense, earthy flavor that you can easily differentiate in a side-by-side. But part of the magic of beet cake is not remembering you’re eating your veggies.

A pack of neighborhood kids, some mine, wandered into the house. I offered them samples, and after the crumbs settled, they confirmed my conclusions. Their fa-

vorite was the one with new carrots and old beets. The cake with new beets, Louie complained, “had too much flavor.”

With some added sugar, of course, these children-ofthe-corn-syrup would have devoured any permutation of root type and age in that cake. And with all the sweetness beets and carrots bring, it doesn’t take much sugar at all.

When Ana tasted a slightly sweetened version and said “it’s almost sweet enough,” I knew I’d nailed it.

Olive oil, mayonnaise and heavy cream further enrich the cake, collaborating on a silkiness that makes you think of mousse, not hairy taproots pulled from the dirt.

A simple frosting of whipped cream and lemon zest rounds out the dish. The zest highlights bright vegetal notes from the roots, without fully exposing them. Apply

cream and zest with abandon. The cake is half dirt, after all. There is nothing to feel guilty about.

The amount of sugar you add is totally subjective.

Taste the batter and decide – before adding the eggs, if you’re squeamish. It will probably taste sweeter than you expected, thanks to the beet and carrot, but perhaps you’ll want it sweeter still.

Chocolate Beet Bars Makes a dense, 1-inch deep bar in an 8 x 11-inch baking dish, or six 4-inch ramekins.

2 cup (1/2 pound) old red beets, grated (not peeled, unless you really want to) 1 cup (1/4 pound) new carrots, grated (not peeled) 1 cup cocoa powder 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp vanilla ½ teaspoon salt 1 Tbs. mayonnaise 1 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil ½ cup sugar 2 eggs, beaten Optional: a cup of cream, whipped, with 2 tsp. lemon zest to garnish Optional: more sugar to taste, or ½ cup dark chocolate chips Simmer the grated beets and carrots in 6 cups of water for 20 minutes and strain. Put the purple liquid back in the pot and reduce it gently to about a cup. Blend the shredded beets and carrots with 2 to 4 Tbs. of the liquid, as necessary to allow a smooth vortex to form. Blend until glassy smooth. Add vanilla, cream, oil, mayo and egg, and blend again briefly until smooth.

Preheat oven to 350. Combine the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, sugar) in a mixing bowl.

Add the puree to the other ingredients, and mix. Taste, and add sugar and chocolate chips, as you see fit. Pour into a buttered 8-x-11-inch baking pan.

Bake for about an hour, or until a knife comes out clean. Let cool, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with lemon zest. n

The 16 new works will be part of a weeklong exhibit, “Common Nobility,” which opens this Friday at Studio &, where Kinahan is co-owner.

While cows and steer aren’t the only creatures on display (there are “Jasper” by also donkeys, goats and sheep), Ki- Elizabeth Kinahan nahan finds them to be quite compelling subjects and seeks to tell a different story about the ubiquitous animals. She has spent several years traveling to farms and ranches both near and far, experiencing firsthand the way the animals interact with each other, and with humans.

“They are playful,” she says, “they have a sense of humor. And simply watching the way a mother of any species protects and cares for her baby makes it incredibly clear to me that they are just like us. They feel pain, sadness, loneliness and fear as much as joy, excitement and pride.”

This idea is what drives Kinahan’s work – a sense that animals are highly aware, intelligent and sentient.

“I paint as a way of understanding the world around me, as a way to scrutinize it, to sink deeply into what I see,” she says.

“I have always been fascinated by the animal kingdom. As far back as I can remember, animals have been the thing that I have loved the most.”

Kinahan recalls being heartbroken as a child when she learned about the ways humans use animals – for food, experiments, target practice, clothing. She’s now dedicated her life to defending wild and domesticated animals, with painting becoming her primary method. “I paint as a form of alchemy, turning the things that hurt me into something beautiful, painting as an act of reverence,” she says. “I have to intentionally put kindness and compassion into the world.”

In addition, Kinahan donates 10 percent of sales of her paintings to nonprofits dedicated to animal rescue, with proceeds from this exhibit going to Spring Creek Horse Rescue.

I googled “greatest guitarists,” and I clicked on the arrow five times before a woman showed up – and no offense, but Joni Mitchell is not the GOAT. Dear Rachel, Is there a rule of thumb for when to throw out cut flowers? My partner seems to think the appropriate time is to toss the whole bunch as soon as the first flowers show the first signs of wilting. I hold that you pull out the dying flowers and keep the others, until the very last flower bids the world a soft adieu. I say aesthetics wins; he says rotting flowers are bad for health. What? But I’ll defer to you, Rachel.

Instead of launching expensive missions to other planets, we could look for exotic creatures here on earth. Astrobiologist Mary Beth Wilhelm is doing just that. She’s looking for organisms like those that might have once thrived on the Red Planet. In accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to use this idea as a metaphor for your own life. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Philosopher Martin Buber believed that some stories have the power to heal. That’s why he said we should actively seek out stories that have the power to heal.

Buber’s disabled grandfather once told Buber a story about an adored teacher who loved to dance. Don’t miss the Boat

ou know when you find a restaurant so good you don’t want to tell anyone because you know you’ll never get a table there again? The Boathouse at Electra Lake is getting that good. Damn. I said it out loud.

I’m an oversharer.

The Boathouse has long been excellent & hard to get a table at (a portion of seating is reserved for the exclusive use of Electra Lake owners) but it just keeps getting better.

They still don’t have a liquor license (bring your own), only take cash or checks (checks!) & won’t give you a reservation half the time you call (pesky owners) during the busy season (let’s face it: the only season.)

Don’t even get me started on the exclusivity thing at Electra. Anyone who has ever tried to put a boat in the water there knows. I’ve tried five times and never succeeded. Reasons for exclusion included: we only accept boats that have been decontaminated here on-site; we don’t have a decontamination machine, but we ordered one; we have a decontamination machine, but it’s missing a part; we have a working machine, but your trailer was originally registered in Michigan; we have to call the supervisor and he’s not answering; we saw a boat like yours doing a bad thing (I made that one up), etc.

Other restaurants in Durango are Durango good (like “Farmington pretty,” or “her voice is better than it sounds”). But there’s that bored millennial server you’re imposing on, a tired standby on the menu, a fill-in cook who read part of the recipe, etc.

The Boathouse doesn’t have any of those. Jenn and

Dave, the couple who run the place, are there to greet you, cook your food, and open and close the place night after night, all season. In-between seasons, they travel and study cooking and food and great restaurants in places where they have great restaurants, like Europe.

Where the difference between a Michelin star and no star, or a whole bunch of Michelin stars is meticulous attention to detail of service, food and ambience. In other words, the difference between an OK meal and fine dining. Or an intimate night with someone you have loved for 20 years or an inflatable doll.

It’s where the basic components of why people go out to dinner hit the sweet spot, and you don’t wonder why you aren’t sitting on the couch in boxer shorts drinking PBRs and eating wings.

When you make a reservation, you get a security gate code (exclusive) and drive down a dirt road with a view of the lake and the mountains. There’s an unpaved lot and a long pier over the lake, which leads to the restaurant, perched over the lake itself. If you time it right, the sun will set during dinner.

The restaurant itself is like the best dining hall from your favorite summer camp. It’s an upside-down boat, with picture windows on most sides, memorabilia and old photos, plus a real ’70s stone fireplace.

During a recent birthday visit, we started with a dozen beautiful oysters, half from the West Coast and half from Massachusetss, my home state. Then scallops, cooked to perfection with a dense green sauce, butter and salt, for dredging. They were accompanied by triangles of polenta perfectly fried, like the best hash browns.

We’d give you the shirts off our backs ...

And Risotto. That ever-maligned and imperfectly cooked Italian blank slate. The reason most people never order risotto except in small towns in Italy where they have relatives is that it’s usually cooked badly, bland or weird, or just sucks.

This is not that risotto. This is the platonic ideal of risotto – where you cook it to the perfect consistency, with just the right amount of shaved cheese and herbs and the exact number of al dente green peas – until there’s nothing left to do but admire it. Bite by bite.

That’s some effing risotto.

Dessert, of course. Hand-churned ice-cream and cheesecake. The way cheesecake is supposed to taste.

None of this mall-food-court berries and Captain Crunchberries. And just an FYI, there’s no espresso machine. Just good coffee.

Service is impeccable. You know all those meals where the waitstaff start out pushy and aggravating (“I’m Chelsea, and I’ll be helping you all evening!”) and then disappear when you actually want something, like a glass of water?

Not at the Boathouse. The dining room is circular, and service is there when you want it, not when you don’t. I once had a dinner with a 1-year old who drank gallons of soy milk. Then puked and started over. He did that at this fabulous seafood restaurant in Vancouver. There were four waiters in tuxedos with napkins who swooped in each time, and perfected the table, kid, everything, in about 3½ seconds. Then disappeared.

Fortunately, my evening at the Boathouse never went that far, but if given the chance, I bet they would have risen to the challenge. Those guys are good. n
