Trends to watch in 2022

Clever home design and decor makes every space more interesting and inviting. Though trends in interior design change more gradually than fashion fads, each year introduces new inspiration for creating more practical and stylish living quarters. The peak of modern farmhouse design has now passed. In 2022, homeowners are embracing more bold choices in artwork, color, furniture and fixtures.

Coffee colors

How do you like your coffee? From a single shot of dark espresso to creamy cold brew, a coffee-colored palette is replacing cool grays in many modern living spaces. It includes everything from earthy browns and terracotta tones, to amber hues and taupe tints. The shift to warm tones comes after nearly a decade of cool colors dominating interior design trends. Nature is the new neutral

Even the elements are inspiring new styles in 2022. Plants have always been a popular addition to homes, but designers are finding more clients with requests to add natural materials and earthy colors to existing spaces. In homes under construction, builders are installing more glass for natural light and gorgeous views. They are also incorporating brick and stone for grounding and texture.

Yin-Yang

Comfortable living spaces showcase balance in every element of the design. One way to achieve this balance is to add contrast in color and texture where possible. Homeowners are embracing more playful and light-hearted design for furniture, walls and window treatments after a decade of neutral items and colorful accents.

Sculptural furniture

While function has been the primary focus of furniture design in the last two decades, designers are starting to see a shift toward more interesting shapes. Expect to see more curves in chairs and sofas, as well as a revival of antiques with delicate detail and natural finishes. Trends also pays homage to trademarks of midcentury design, including peg legs on cabinets and tables, teak wood tones and highly textured fabrics.

Mixed materials

Bold colors, playful patterns and varied textures will usher in the next era of interior design. Along with the neutral brown tones, the ‘70s-style prints and brighter pops of warm colors will return in earnest. From upholstery to window treatments, variety in these patterns and texture helps create depth in a home’s design.

Multipurpose rooms

With remote work growing in popularity, homeowners are converting areas, such as living rooms, guest rooms and garages, into multifunctional spaces. The impact of lockdown left many residents without access to exercise equipment and organized offices. Interior designers are seeing a shift toward living areas with a corner designated for working while guest rooms and garages transform into creative studios and home gyms.

Exterior environments

Hosts spent more time entertaining guests outdoors in the last two years. Families desire to enhance and expand living space with larger patios and porches that let them soak up the sunshine with some company. Luxury designs are integrating more indoor conveniences into outdoor spaces, including fireplaces, high-quality furniture, food preparation areas and even electronics, such as televisions and stereo systems. n
