It was in 1940 that Robertson Davies, Canadian cultural icon, novelist, playwright, academic, and his Australian bride, Brenda Mathews, were married; she was his muse and confidante, and was proud to be Mrs Robertson Davies for the remainder of her life. They met at the Old Vic theatre in London, England, while both worked backstage, and where Robertson Davies presented her with a ring of his own cradling an oval purple plaque in a sterling silver bezel. Featuring a classical figure of Demeter holding a cornucopia accented by acorns, the carved paste intaglio was to become her storied engagement ring. (Lot 180) Stories were central to their relationship, spanning theatre, newspapers, publishing, playwriting, academic life, and, of course, important novels of international renown.

The Davies’ home was in Canada, but they returned to England often, each visit adding to a growing collection of fine European jewels, particularly excellent gem cameos, intaglios and polychrome enamels.

The collection bridges centuries, and most jewels tell their own stories, with scenes from mythology, figures from antiquity, picturesque birds and fantastic enamelled foliage. Each jewel is an eminently wearable work of art, ready to carry its story and excitement to the next proud owner, just as Brenda Davies desired.
