I have a long history with watches that goes back to my ﬁrst real job in high school. I worked at a kiosk in the mall, where I replaced watch batteries, sized watch bands, and sold a sordid collection of some of the worst watches ever to grace a wrist. I also handled some ﬁne timepieces — Rolex, Tag Heuer, Movado, and the like.

It was around this time I ﬁrst noticed that cars and watches are quite similar. Both are complicated ma chines. Both are things we interact with intimately on a daily basis. And both have a hierarchy, with Ford and Fossil priced for the masses and Bugatti and Blancpain for the aesthetes.

The word “utopia” calls to mind the unattainable: an idyllic paradise, an environ ment or state of being discoverable only in one’s wildest dreams. But that blissful destination may be closer than previously imagined — at least for the select few who can lay claim to the driver’s seat of Italian automaker Pagani’s third masterpiece. (Or the single passenger seat, for that matter.) After plenty of teases, the Pagani Utopia has ﬁnally been revealed, named after the Sir Thomas More book that coined the term way back in 1516.

In conceptualizing the model, Horacio Pagani began in conversation with his closest clients to discover their ultimate desires for a hypercar. The answers re volved around three benchmarks: simplic ity, lightness, and the pleasure of driving. Through a litany of special considerations and design features, Pagani has certainly delivered on all three requests.

Designers found beauty amid restraint. Unlike many newer supercars on the market, the Utopia has few aerodynamic components, yet it remains incredibly e cient thanks to its ﬂowing and curvaceous lines. Pagani’s designers looked to objects from the 1950s for inspiration, such as a Vespa scooter and Riva speedboats.

At the rear lurks the engine: a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 built by Mercedes-AMG. Pro ducing 864 horsepower and 809 poundfeet of torque, the Utopia is an absolute powerhouse with a svelte appearance. Un like many recent models with this much strength, the Utopia is no hybrid. This deci sion preserves the powertrain’s simplicity and keeps the car’s overall weight down.

A-class carbon fiber material that the automaker created specifically for this bodywork. The innovative carbon fiber increases sti ness by 38 percent while retaining the same density. In the company’s three decades of boundary-bending, Pagani has become known for these types of advancements in materials, with Carbo-Titanium and Carbo-Triax being their other inventions in the realm.

These forged wheels feature a turbine design that pulls hot air away from the brakes to counteract turbulence.

Inside, the minimalist concept contin ues. Rather than pack the instrument clus ter and center console with touch screens and digital displays, Pagani upheld the tac tile pleasures of analog controls. In fact, there are no screens inside the Utopia aside from a small display in front of the driver. The result is a beautiful interior that keeps the driver focused on the road ahead.

Only 99 examples of the Pagani Utopia are planned for production. As of press time, a price and an estimated delivery date range have yet to be announced.

As a performance model, Lamborghini ensured that this iteration of its luxury SUV packs serious power and pairs it with improved driving capabilities. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine develops 666 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Reengineered drive modes allow the super-SUV pilot to select the perfect setup for every environment, including Strada, Sport, and Corsa, and an all-new Rally mode. Rally transforms its chassis into an o -road machine, taking the Urus down dirt roads unfamiliar to other Lamborghini models.

The Performante shares the same silhouette as the standard Urus but o ers a few new exterior features. For a more aggressive stance, designers shaved 22 millime ters o the ride height and increased the width of the wheel track by 16 millimeters to fit the optional 23-inch or forged 22-inch lightweight wheels. The front end presents an upgraded carbon fiber bumper and splitter, while a new hood with air inlets rests above it. In the rear, a newly designed spoiler increases downforce by 38 percent. Far below that is a carbon fiber di user, where the standard titanium Akrapovič sports exhaust makes its debut.

Despite counting on four electric motors for propulsion, the Pininfarina Battista looks like a “traditional” midengined car. It shares its architecture and electric powertrain with the Rimac Nevera, which has a 120-kilowatt-hour T-shape battery pack, housing most of its weight behind the passenger compartment.

Throughout its 92-year history, Italian design house Pininfarina has penned some of the world’s most inﬂuential cars. The Battista is the marque’s ﬁrst production car, and it breaks into the hypercar space with outrageous performance stats, sleek looks, and a lofty price tag to match.

If there was ever a poster child for “how much power is too much?”, this is it. The Battista’s standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires work overtime to ﬁnd traction as the car shimmies under hard acceleration. Its clever torque vectoring system does a stellar job of controlling the power sent to each wheel through the corners. It’s the only way that substantial power ﬁgure is manageable in the real world.

The Battista is a wolf in wolf’s clothing and a proper hypercar. However, while it may be more “hyper” than “GT,” there are remnants of the latter. Slow things down, set the suspension in its softest setting, and you can settle in for a comfortable ride in a massive technological achievement that gives us a glimpse of what the future holds for the world’s quickest and most expensive machines.

Czinger wowed with its 21C hypercar, with design and engineering that enlisted the help of artificial intelligence, and a bold use of aircraft-like single-file seating. The automaker revealed that an even faster version of the 21C will soon hit the road in the form of the 21C VMAX. The VMAX includes an elongated profile for better aerodynamics and higher speeds, using the V8 engine’s maximum 1,350 horsepower to achieve 253 mph.

The staggering figure announced by Hagerty broke the original record of 100 vehicles sold, which was achieved only twice, in 2018 and 2021. With attendance at an all-time high, each auction room was packed with spectators and eager bidders looking to witness vehicle sales well into the seven-ﬁgure realm. Sales totaled up to $470 million, obliterating the previous re cord set in 2015, which was $395 million.

On top of that, the one-o Porsche 911 Sally Special that was designed to look like Sally Carrera from the Pixar film Cars had a hammer price of $3.6 million. Most importantly, that sum of money was donated to the nonproﬁts Girls Inc. and USA for UNHCR. Although Ferrari contributed more than $32.46 million of the top ﬁve overall sales, Gooding & Company added some diversity to the mix with a pristine 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante, which sold for $10,345,000.

On paper, the 718 Cayman T reads like an ideal car week ride. It combines the base Cayman’s 3.0-liter turbocharged ﬂat-four with a plethora of standard equipment. These include PASM Sport Suspension, Sport Chrono Package, mechanical limited-slip differential, Sport Exhaust, Sport Seats, and 20-inch Carrera S wheels. Cars equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, like our tester, tip the scales at 3,058 pounds. PDK-equipped cars weigh an extra 62 pounds but fully embrace the engine’s 300 horsepower and 280 poundfoot output, reaching 60 mph in 4.5 seconds compared to 4.9 seconds with three pedals.

Between Los Angeles and Monterey sit a mix of flat open highways, twisty canyon roads, and stunning coastal drives. The first allowed us to open up the taps on the T’s flat-four. It may have two fewer cylinders than its predecessor, but it loses none of the character. Peak power still lives at the top of the rev range at 6,500 rpm, urging its driver to work for top speed. However, peak torque now comes in at a low 1,950 rpm, allowing the T to feel quick both o the line and around town.

Extensive suspension improvements shone through as the road got twisty. This car’s stable agility inspires conﬁdence. Its adaptive suspension sti ens considerably for sporty driving without turning it into a back-breaking experience. The T proved very approachable, inviting us to test its reachable limits. If anything, we noticed ourselves enjoying the drive more than some modern supercars.

Sheathed••• in bold Guards Red, our test vehicle came with the standard kit. Its 20-inch Carerra S wheels lived up to the challenge of navigating varying road conditions along our nearly 1,000-mile journey. A heated rear window combats the elements, while front and rear luggage compartments provide the necessary storage for a long haul.

Once in Monterey, not even the hilly streets made us wish we had PDK. Thanks to a light and easy-to-modulate clutch, the T is more than equipped for daily-driver duties.

Sure, a big comfy GT car would have easily been up to the task, but that would mean giving up some of the fun in the canyons. The T proved the best of both worlds, feeling at home on the highway and through the twists. With an as tested price of $78,550, the Cayman T — and its standard kit — carves a tempting lane beside its more expensive GTS 4.0 and GT4 siblings. After a week behind the wheel, it’s clear that anyone overlooking the Cayman T is doing themselves a disservice.

Some of the most complex watches in the world can boast hundreds, some times nearly a thousand, tiny mechanical parts in a single movement whose heart beats inside a small case on the wrist. The concept is mind-boggling. While engineers ﬁnd ways to create ever more desirable timepieces, lawyers ﬁle patents to protect designs and systems. While mechanics work on the most advanced CNC and nanotechnology machines to cut parts for calibers and cases, watchmakers build prototype after prototype to ensure accuracy, performance, and longevity.

Invented in 1816 by Louis Moinet, the chronograph is designed to measure intervals of time. Translated as “time writer,” the ﬁrst chronographs actually used ink to mark the start and stop time of an event — such as horse racing — on the dial of the watch. Eventually, the method evolved so that mechanical parts could track the time with the push of a button. There are multiple types of chronographs, and, like a stopwatch, they measure the start and stop of an event, like a lap or so around a track. More advanced split-seconds chronographs can at one time measure multiple intervals that share the same starting time but di erent end times at once (like in a race). Most often, chronographs are paired with other functions, such as tachymeters to measure speed or distance or pulsimeters to measure heartbeats. Some people don’t necessarily use the chronograph on their wrist, but love owning them because these watches boast smaller subsidiary dials on their face that make for an active, attractive look.

Swiss watch brand Angelus is known for its open-worked timepieces with advanced mechanics and high stan dards of elegance. This Gold & Carbon Flying Tourbillon brings high-tech carbon material together with pre cious 18-karat rose gold for an edgy, almost sporty look. An ultra-lightweight carbon com posite accents the 5N rose gold case in a mixed matte and polish ﬁnish. The 18-karat gold bridges o er great contrast to the black carbon mainplate. Originally invented more than 200 years ago by Abraham-Louis Breguet, the tourbillon is essentially an escapement that compensates for errors in timekeeping due to the e ects of gravity on a watch when held in certain positions. The escapement moves constantly to o er a beautifully orchestrated, almost mesmerizing dance when visible via the watch dial. Di erent types of tourbillons include a fixed tourbillon, where the escapement is held in place by bridges, and a flying tourbillon, where one arm holds it in place, so the escapement looks as though it is floating in space. Recent innovations in nanotechnology have opened the doors to even more advanced tourbillon escapements, sometimes with raised or angled profiles and sometimes with multiple constantly rotating tourbillon escapements in one tiny wristwatch. These advanced horological timepieces are no easy feat and typically require hundreds of extra watchmaking hours to develop and assemble.

Since the dawn of humankind, we have struggled to measure time. Originally, we tracked it in rudimentary senses, like day and night or harvest seasons. We later progressed to the point where we can measure time to fractions of a second. Some brands are obsessed with tracking time and the heavenly bodies around us to achieve even greater — and longer — precision. That translates to perpetual calendar and astronomical watches of the highest order. Some of today’s perpetual calendar watches have mechanical movements that can accurately display the day, date, month, years, moon phases, and even leap years well into the 22nd century. Astronomical watches go even further, tracking solar time and sidereal time, as well as the equation of time (the di erence between mean or average solar time and real time), tides, and constellations. While these watches are among the most visually stunning works of art on the wrist, they are also among the most complex to build.
