dR PUBLISHER’S LETTER

13055 Starkey Road Largo. Florida 33773 727.530.5150 www.appliance-gallery.com

Dear Reader, The Tampa Bay area is blessed with many, many worthwhile philanthropic causes, opportunities and an abundance of dedicated volunteers. Our communities would surely come out on top of a nationwide poll measuring the intensity of “helping others” activities. The duPont REGISTRY™ Luxury Living in Tampa Bay is no different. While we are all about the very best in haute couture, home furnishings, top-quality transportation, and people of political and social stature, we too are interested (and active) in the area of “lending a hand to those in need.” It is a way of life for us. In this issue, you will find one of our stories wherein the duPont REGISTRY™ was the catalyst to bring together our advertising partners and a specific organization that helps those who have suffered motorskill complications from disease, accidents or service to our country in the military. Helping these folks is the goal of Quantum Leap Farm, an organization and a facility dedicated to the use of equine adventures to assist in the rehabilitation of those in need physically and emotionally. Quantum Leap is much more than horseback riding, it is a way of life that mixes the outdoors, animals, volunteers and clients in a loving, healing and purposeful way. It involves whole families whose daily responsibilities can be overwhelming. It is “time out” for a lot of needy folks and it is “time out” for Quantum Leap’s volunteers when they leave their “normal” lives to help others in need. Not long ago we learned of Quantum Leap’s desire to have a “picnic” facility to better serve the growing number of scheduled meals and casual get-togethers. We also found a desire in several of our advertising partners who were looking to help out in some way, somewhere in our community. Presto! Quantum Leap has a new outdoor kitchen provided by Artisan Design for the cabinets and design, Fisher & Paykel, Inc. for the appliances, Onicx for the construction and Pavimento for the countertops. A big Thank You to these folks. They simply stepped up when asked and in short order Quantum Leap was better equipped to help those in need. Please see the story beginning on page 69 to fully understand the “good work” of Quantum Leap and these fine citizens. duPont REGISTRY™ is proud to have helped out with this project. We are proud to be a part of Tampa Bay, where so many people care and want to help make life better for those in need. We are humbled by the enthusiasm of our advertising partners and awestruck by the good works of our friends at Quantum Leap. To all of them, Bravo, great job, well done! To all of you, remember: when given an opportunity to reach out and lend a hand, go ahead. It will make you a better person and your community a better place. Just like all of Tampa Bay.

Thoughtfully,

PARK CITY—FOR ALL SEASONS Think of Park City, Utah, and you may instantly conjure thoughts of Robert Redford’s famed Sundance Film Festival held each January. (In fact, VIP packages are available during the film festival— everyone’s welcome to participate!) But when the celebrity cache dissipates like freshly fallen snow on a warm, late-spring day, Park City is left in all its glory.

GET OUT AND PLAY!

With all of its outdoor activities—biking, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, sailing, kayaking and river rafting in spring, summer and fall, and skiing, snowboarding, show shoeing and all sorts of powdersoft snowy fun, Park City certainly is filled with a vast array of pursuits. What truly makes it unique, though, is the number of exclusive activities that can only be found in the area. If you’re an avid skier or snowboarder, you’ll want to take advantage of First Tracks at Canyons—you’ll be part of an elite group that takes to the mountain to lay down its first tracks, (as its name implies) before it opens to the general public. Oh, and you’ll be accompanied by

an Olympic skier who’ll show you the best trails! Or, make reservations for a threeday Ultimate Mountain Experience package at Canyons and learn from the best in the world—Olympians and professionals. A similar package is available at Deer Valley: the Mahre Training Ski Camp offers threeand five-day sessions, conducted in part by Olympians Phil and Steve Mahre. For even fresher powder, book a heliski trip with Wasatch Powderbird Guides and be whisked via helicopter into the Wasatch Mountains’ backcountry, where you’ll be the first to ski on acres of untracked snow. Whatever time of year you visit, Utah Olympic Park is not to be missed. Elite athletes train and compete year-round at the park, the venue of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. For a truly exhilarating experience, take a ride in a public passenger bobsled— you’ll reach speeds of up to 80 mph and experience 5 Gs of force as your professional driver guides you down the Olympic course. What’s more, Utah Olympic Park is the only site in the world where you’ll traverse an entire Olympic course.

REFUEL AND RECHARGE For such an intimate setting, the town of Park City offers myriad dining options, from casual, slope-side to fine dining. In fact, there are more than 100 restaurants to whet your appetite. The menu at The Farm, named “Best New Restaurant in Utah” in February 2012 by Salt Lake Magazine, showcases locally-sourced ingredients from farms and artisans within 200 miles of Park City. You’ll definitely want to order the house cured charcuterie board, the chef’s specialty. To get a taste of the flavors of Park City, plan your trip around Savor the Summit (June 22)—the largest dinner party with food, drinks and live music, all presented on Main Street in downtown Park City. Menus range from $40 to $150 per person; reservations are recommended. If you’re visiting in July, don’t miss the Park City Food and Wine Classic (July 10-14)— four days filled with food and wine events, including a wine kickoff celebration and the Toast of Park City VIP Experience. For a quieter experience, the tasting menu by Chef Briar at Talisker on Main—

Speaking of the Waldorf Astoria Park City, it is one of the preferred places to stay—accommodations range from onebedroom suites to the 5,000 square foot Presidential Suite, not to mention the onsite Golden Door Spa. Just a short gondola ride away is the Grand Summit Hotel, a AAA Four-Diamond resort featuring suites and luxury penthouses, sits in the heart of the Resort Village. Both properties are part of Canyons Resort, which has a total of five properties from which to choose. Whenever you decide to visit Park City is the best time. With myriad activities and ways to simply relax, Park City certainly is a destination for all seasons. dR

named Park City’s Best Restaurant three consecutive years—is exquisite, showcasing the chef’s creative culinary expertise. Reservations are required, and prices start at $150 per person for six courses with wine pairings. The Waldorf Astoria Park City offers an even more intimate experience. “Be Your Own Chef Menu” pairs you with a chef to create a gourmet meal prepared and served right in your guest room. Or, join Chef Clement in late-summer/earlyfall for a true foodie culinary adventure! You’ll join Chef on a foraging excursion to discover and harvest local Utah ingredients for a private meal that will be prepared upon your return to the resort. While out on the mountainside, you’ll enjoy a private picnic, complete with wine and locally brewed craft beer.

CREATING A HUMMINGBIRD GARDEN

By Janan Talafer

Hummingbirds are like little winged jewels. These tiny, mysterious creatures have iridescent feathers, average about three or four inches in length, and have wings that can flutter at 75 beats a second, so fast they actually make a humming sound. Even more spectacular, they can perform what University of Florida horticultural experts call “amazing helicopter feats.” They zoom, dart and even fly upside down and backwards. “They’re very small and very fast—the only birds that can hover for long periods of time,” says Mark Hostetler, professor in the UF Department of Wildlife Ecology & Conservation, IFAS. If you’re lucky, you might seen them in your yard hovering above nectar plants with red, orange and purple flowers. But spotting them in the yard isn’t always easy. “They’re so small you have to pay attention to where they land,” says Mary Campbell, director of the Pinellas County Extension Service. “I use native plants in my garden with intention of bringing in butterflies and hope to attract hummers, too.”

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO INVITE THEM TO YOUR YARD? Bees are attracted by scent, but hummers are drawn to bright

WITH THE RIGHT PLANTS AND A FEEDER, ITʼS POSSIBLE TO FILL YOUR YARD WITH BEAUTIFUL HUMMINGBIRDS

colors. “Red is a magnet,” says Bill O’Grady, supervisor at Sunken Gardens. “It really calls them to the plant.” Plants like native coral honeysuckle and trumpet vines, red or purple salvia, shrimp plant, firebush, firecracker plant, scarlet hibiscus, turks-cap and the bottlebrush tree are perfect for this task. They also have the right shape flower. The hummingbird’s long, slender beak and tongue is designed to reach deep into tubular flowers to get the nectar inside. In addition to native plants, Hostetler

says bird feeders can be helpful to supplement the hummers’ diets and they provide a way to observe birds at close range. Purchase a specially designed “nectar” feeder for hummingbirds, preferably in red. You can buy hummingbird food at local garden centers, or you can make a simple solution of one part sugar to four parts water. Boil the solution until it dissolves, cool it down and put it in the feeder, says Hostetler. Don’t use red dye, honey or artificial sweeteners. Remember to keep the feeder clean

(sugar water can quickly become contaminated) by flushing every week with hot water and scrubbing with a bottle brush, but don’t use soap. Like many birds, hummingbirds thrive on both nectar and bugs—tiny soft-bodied insects and spiders found on plants and flowers. But unlike songbirds, “hummingbirds have these little squeaks when they fly,” says Hostetler. “Most people ignore it, but once you hear it, you won’t forget.”

throat is the most common. Look for colorful males with red feathers on their throat, green feathers on their backs and tail feathers that combine green and black.

WHEN SHOULD YOU BEGIN LOOKING FOR THEM? While some ruby throats remain here

year-round, UF experts say most migrate in the fall to Mexico and Central America, where they stay for the winter, coming back to nest in early spring. Tiny nests the size of walnuts begin appearing in April. Breeding season ends in July in time to get ready for destinations south once again. dR

According to Bob Sargent, founder of the HummerBird Study Group in Alabama, hummingbirds are native only to the Western Hemisphere, where they range from Alaska and northern Canada to South America. Some 320 species have been identified, he says, with the majority living in the tropics. About 16 are found in the U.S. There are three in Florida—the rufous, black-chinned and ruby throat. The ruby

Tiles for the Kitchen and Bath Reach A New Creative Level

Plain solid-color square tiles on the kitchen backsplash or bathroom shower stall are so yesterday. Today’s beautiful new wall tiles are artistic, creative and unique, in colors ranging from subtle earth tones to eyepopping vivid shades and swirls. “Manufacturers are creating tiles in a beautiful color palette that includes white, blue, silver, gold, walnut, green and any earth tone you can imagine,” says Ryan Sachs of Stone-Mart. “That outdated 1950’s-era look with big clay tiles limited to shades olive green, light blue and pink is long gone.” Why is tile suddenly so trendy? “Homeowners are deciding to invest in renovation and remodeling rather than selling,” says Sachs. Using tile in an artistic way updates the home and adds to the value. Another reason for tile’s new popularity is the availability of wall tiles with the same premium quality natural stone you can find for indoor flooring or pool deck pavers. It’s a an elegant, upscale look that adds richness and appeal to the home. “Placing a beautiful travertine or marble tile under the kitchen cabinets really adds to the look of the kitchen and makes the room warm and inviting,” says Ali Uyar of Marble Florida. Today’s tiles also come in unique sizes. Rather than the traditional four-inch by four-inch or two-inch by two-inch sizes found in the past, wall tiles are leaner, more modern and rectangular, which creates a more visually interesting design, says Uyar. The tiles can be placed horizontal or vertical, depending on how contemporary you want the room to look.

materials, such as marble with glass or glass with wood. Leather and metal are also popular. There are even some teak tiles that you can use in the shower because teak is waterproof, says Bowen. Guy Desrochers of American Tile and Stone and backsplashtogo.com, is equally passionate about tile, in particular glass tile and mosaics. And he agrees that changes in the manufacturing process have definitely added to the versatility and beauty of the product. “Almost anything that can be designed on the computer can be made,” says Desrochers. “There is no limit to the shape, color, texture and pattern. Once you start working with it, the creativity is unlimited.” For example, he points to products like Glazzio Tiles that come blended with gran-

Rob Bowen of Rob Bowen Design likes to think outside the box when it comes to designing with tile. He doesn’t just limit tile to a kitchen backsplash, or the bathroom shower. He’s used it instead of wallpaper on accent walls in living rooms, dining rooms and entry ways, added it to staircases and created an entire wall of tile in the kitchen to make a dramatic statement. “The possibilities are endless if you just take a risk,” says Bowen. One of the primary reasons tile has caught on so big these days, he says, is the improvement in technology. That’s made it possible to create more interesting designs, such as geometric patterns, or tile that has the look of flowing water. You’ll also find an innovative blending of

ite and natural stone, onyx and other gemstones, or metals such as stainless and copper. Tiles can be clear, frosted, or crackled—a design technique that looks like someone took a hammer and cracked the glass, he says, but the pattern is inside the tile, not on the surface. For a really hip, out-of-the-ordinary look, Desrochers points to Vidrepur, a tile company based in Spain specializing in glass mosaics, including glow in the dark tiles that absorb sunlight and give off a glow at night similar to a solar light. The tiles make quite a statement lighting up a walkway or lining the steps of a pool. Whether you just want a splash of tile above the kitchen countertops or you want to indulge a passion for tile with an entire accent wall, today’s choices are endless. dR

RE/MAX Metro Reaching Tampa Bay

RE/MAX Metro continues to drive the Tampa Bay Real Estate Market in its’ upward climb… Active listings in Pinellas County total 5,640 (through mid-May), however 53% of those are under contract leaving a very small inventory for the many buyers currently in the housing market. The median price is up 9.8% for single family homes and 21.8% for condo/townhomes from last year. There is a 24.5% increase in closed sales from this same time last year for single family homes. Non-distressed properties show a 29% increase, bank owned sales are up slightly and short sales are down slightly. Cash accounted for 42% of all sales. Listing inventory for properties priced between $400,000-$599,999 is down 7.7%; priced between $600,000-$999,999 is up 4.1%; and priced at $1 million or higher are down 20% according to statistics from the Pinellas Realtor Organization through March 2013. For properties priced under $1 million, the average days on the market is only 64 days. Buyers need to be aware that multiple offers are common and they should listen to the advice of a professional realtor. Hesitating will more than likely result in the home they may have fallen in love with, being sold to someone else. RE/MAX Metro closed over $38 million in April and our Luxelist Council of Agents are closing more business than ever – the Luxury Market is incredibly strong and properties are moving quickly. With three offices in Pinellas County our agents cover the entire Tampa Bay area, from the Bay to the Gulf Beaches.

With offices in Downtown St. Petersburg, Treasure Island & Tierra Verde, RE/MAX Metro continues to dominate Tampa Bay's Luxury Market. Bonnie Davis, Managing Broker • RE/MAX Metro • (727) 896-1800 ext. 110 • bonnie@metroagents.net 60 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

ONE CHARITABLE LEAP FORWARD

By Melinda5 Tam Orlando

A Magical Journey of Giving for Quantum Leap Farm and duPont REGISTRY’s Family of Advertisers

Jason Grant General Manager, Southern Region Fisher & Paykel Appliances, Inc.

John Keene Owner/President Pavimento, Inc.

One conversation between three individuals can turn magical—and if you’re a local charity, like Quantum Leap Farm in Odessa, magic is one of the key ingredients to your success. Founded in 2000, Quantum Leap Farm, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching and enhancing the lives of handicapped adults and children by engaging them in a variety of equestrian activities designed to promote and improve physical, mental and social wellbeing. Quantum Leap is the only therapeutic horseback riding program dedicated to adults and children locally. Back in late March 2013, Quantum Leap didn’t know magic was stirring right on the property, but a conversation between Edie Ebbert Dopking, Founder and Operations Director of the nonprofit, Jessica Thiel, one of Quantum Leap’s regular volunteers and equestrian enthusiast, and Beth Ann Drake, Publisher of duPont REGISTRY™ Luxury Living in Tampa Bay and an avid equestrian in her own right, started a chain of events that would change Quantum Leap forever. “Beth Ann said, ‘We have a lot of advertisers interested in philanthropic things and giving back to the community. Do you

Ralph Mills Owner/Creative Director Artisan Design

have any current needs,” Dopking recalls. Drake explains her reasoning for the interest. “That’s what we do here at duPont; we find ways to give back and make a difference,” Drake explains. “And for me personally, I love helping people when I can. I knew we had the resources to make it happen.” Quantum Leap is no stranger to community support. The nonprofit has received assistance from a variety of local organizations as well as many local individual and corporate contributors. Additionally, Quantum Leap was chosen as the benefiting charity for the Gasparilla Festival in 2012. But Quantum Leap’s participants range from ages 2 to 92. As the nonprofit has grown to help more and more Bay area individuals, so have the needs. Plus, duPont REGISTRY™ has always shown an interest in helping the community, thanks in part to Tom duPont’s leadership. So when the question of needs was posed, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to pull together duPont REGISTRY’s advertising partners for one unforgettable journey in giving. Tom duPont, Chairman and Publisher, duPont Publishing, Inc., explains, “My family was always taught the

Dhvanit Patel President Onicx

importance of giving back and helping others. We are so glad that our magazine could provide the conduit of bringing this project to completion for such a worthwhile cause.” Quantum Leap partners with various charities to host 15 Family Fun Days each year, and cooking up suitable meals for all event attendees is a necessity. These events feature several family-friendly activities like pony rides for the children, games, hay rides, pony painting and equine arts and crafts as well as food for the Wounded Warrior Project, pediatriccancer patrons and their families, specialneeds children and their families, military families and more. In addition to the Family Fun Days, the charity hosts nine workshops, various group events and birthday parties, all which require food preparation and serving. “The first thing that popped into my head was the need for an outdoor kitchen,” Dopking says. “Cooking has always been a challenge here,” Dopking explains. “We’ve always hauled down the grill from my house in order to make it work.” And moments after Dopking shared her outdoor-kitchen dream with Drake, action began. “Beth Ann called Ralph Mills, www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay 69

who owns Artisan Design,” Dopking says. “They had a conversation recently about his interest in doing some philanthropic work, so she called him right up right then and there, and he was out the very next morning. And he couldn’t have been nicer.” Mills, Owner/Creative Director at Artisan Design in Tampa, was eager to take on the challenge for a good cause. “We are a design, build and remodel company with a kitchen and bath division,” Mills explains. “So I knew this was something we could do and really stand behind right from the start. Plus, Quantum Leap touches so many different people—adults, children, veterans—so it was the perfect opportunity to really make a difference.” Next, Mills developed a fully functional, wheelchair-accessible kitchen layout and plan, utilizing Dopking’s hope and vision for the outdoor space combined with his years of design expertise. Then, Mills enlisted the help of fellow partners and duPont REGISTRY™ advertisers to round out all the services needed to complete this large job. Dhvanit Patel, President of Onicx in Tampa, happily agreed to get involved with the project. “We believe an important part of being a successful company in this com-

munity is exercising the ability to give back.” Onicx project manager Frank Belfiore served as Mills right-hand man to help manage the day-to-day operations and project coordination on a strict 30-day timeline from start to finish. “There was some initial work that was done between Ralph and Edie for the plans, but we were only on the property actually working for eight days all together,” boasts Belfiore. Determining a kitchen-appliance supplier was essential to the success of the project, but luckily, Fisher & Paykel Appliances, Inc., another duPont REGISTRY™ advertising partner, which produces only high-end, premium appliances, came to the rescue. Jason Grant, General Manager of the Southern Region, and Gina Marie Lathrum, DCS Brand Manager for North America, jumped on board to supply just under $15,000 worth of state-of-the-art DCS outdoor-friendly kitchen appliances. Amenities include a 36-inch built-in grill with a grease management system, rotisserie burner, smoker tray and below access doors for additional storage; a 30inch Liberty built-in with two side burners, a large griddle space and additional drawers; a 24-inch Energy Star outdoor refrig-

erator and built-in ice maker. “Our brand really cares about the celebration of family and how loved ones come together around food while being in the kitchen,” Lathrum explains. “And Quantum Leap wanted to do the exact same thing with this outdoor space, so we whole-heartedly wanted to sponsor their efforts by helping out.” Grant seconded that commitment. “We knew the people at the farm would enjoy making breakfast, lunch and dinner together in a place where they could laugh, tell stories and continue to enjoy the beautiful day around them. A kitchen is about entertaining and laughing and sometimes, like in this case, it’s about healing.“ To complement the appliances, four slabs of rich countertops were in order. And John Keene, Owner/President of Pavimento, Inc., in Clearwater was up to the challenge. Keene took care of fabrication, product and materials in record time, providing beautiful coffee-brown dense granite with overhangs to enable wheelchair accessibility. “Everything I do is about the kids,” Keene says. “It feels good to give back and help people out. I feel lucky to be able to do that.”

Ed Barry

And for those items that weren’t supplied—the sinks, facets, framing, labor and additional materials—Mills was happy to cover the costs. “I’m very proud of this project,” Mills gushes. “I’m proud that we were all able to pull together and make

this happen with little difficulty. I’m proud that we were able to come together as a team and really make a difference. That’s what counts.” Olivia’s Barnyard Buddies will be the lucky first group to enjoy the new space.

The event is a Family Fun Day for children with special needs and their families, sponsored by the Florida Medical Clinic Foundation of Giving. “We just couldn’t be happier,” Dopking says. dR

Top Needs—Are you an organization or individual that would like to give back? Take a look at Quantum Leap’s top five needs. 1. Renovation of nearby horse stalls to make additional office space to support the charity’s growing staff and storage needs 2. Fencing for 10-acre pasture to hold horses 3. A pole barn to give horses shade from Florida’s harshest outdoor elements like sun, rain and lightning 4. The materials and labor for a retreat center and/or bunk house, which would allow clients to experience total emersion at the property; currently, clients stay at nearby hotels 5. General donations are always accepted happily

Spruce Up Your Décor For Summer By Janan Talafer New colors, styles, fabrics and textures to refresh your home Summer is the perfect time to lighten up and refresh your décor with new colors and accessories. Small changes can make a big difference in the look and feel of your home. Here are some tips from Tampa Bay’s home design experts.

“Clean monochromatic palates in white, cream and beige, with an occasional grey or soft green continue to be popular, says Ralph Mills of Artisan Design. But to spice everything up a bit, he recommends splashes of bold, vivid colors such as apple green, turquoise, deep blue and gold, paired with graphic, geometric patterns. Put these great accent shades and patterns to work on accessories like lamp shades, side chairs, pillows, artwork, vases and area rugs. Enrique Crespo of Casa Nova Design Group finds many of his clients are moving away from the tans and embracing shades of grey and taupe. For accessories, he likes pops of orange and turquoise to add a little spark. Those shades mirror the nectarine, African violet, lemon zest, poppy red and “Tender Shoots” green that are among the new spring and summer shades introduced by the Pantone Color Institute, the gold standard for color. The new colors, says Pantone experts, "address consumer's desire for self-expression, balance and the need to find harmony in the frantic pace of everyday lives."

Furniture That is Retro, Reclaimed and Repurposed Wood and metal, especially pieces that are covered in hammered metal or faux metal, are also in demand, says Mills. Think side tables for the living room, serving tables in the dining room and even bedroom headboards, night stands and chests. 72

Neutral Shades with Color Accents

This style, called modern traditionalism, gives an updated, modern twist to more formal classic pieces, says Mills. In addition, oversize is in—larger, comfortable chairs, ottomans and sofas, but with clean, simple lines. Blending wood and metal especially appeals to a younger demographic of people who support eco-friendly materials and earth conservation efforts, says Crespo. For example, he points to cushions made from recycled materials, rustic, reclaimed tables with metal cranks or zinc tabletops and even three-dimensional wall art using recycled oil drum lids. It’s a style he describes as a modern, industrial chic and organic. Rob Bowen of Rob Bowen Design Group is also seeing interest in reclaimed, distressed and repurposed items, as well as the use of metal and petrified wood. "Items that have some wear and tear and don't look so new and shiny have a story to tell that makes them more interesting," says Bowen.

Bowen is a big fan of simple touches to keep the home fresh and updated each season. For summer, he suggests lightening everything up, pulling back the draperies, repainting a wall in a lighter color and adding fresh flowers. Even something as simple as rearranging the furniture, adding accent pillows or changing the bedding can add a little excitement, he says.

Stylish Windows Treatments What’s new in window coverings? According to Scott Sowder of Artistic Windows, the latest hot trends in window treatment include automated solar shades accented with decorative panels on either side; the use of ultra-contemporary, sleek metal finials and rods for draperies; and over- the-top burgundy velvet drapes with gold fringe for the home theater.fringe for the home theater. Solar shades are particular popular for homeowners who have floor-to-ceiling windows and a great view. “Solar shades block 98 percent of UV rays to protect your furnishings and give privacy, but they still offer the homeowner the ability to see outside,” says Sowder. Also popular are black-out draperies to keep out the sun in the master bedroom. For maximum effect, layer the window. Start with solar shades, add sheers and then hang black-out drapes for the ultimate in both style and room darkening. For a novel window treatment, Sowder says he is seeing some designers take sheers with a vertical stripe and turn the drapery horizontal, creating an interesting effect. He’s also seeing more liberal use of bright patterns on a neutral background for an ultra-contemporary look. While a major update of your home’s interior may not be part of your plans right now, it’s always the right time for a little sprucing up. dR

ENTERTAINING WITH STYLE OUTDOORS

By Janan Talafer

Set The Mood With Fire, Water, Furniture, Music and Lights Beautiful outdoor spaces serve as both an extension of the home and a playground filled with resort-like amenities. Today’s high-end homes have outdoor living spaces that rival the interior of the home for style, luxury and comfort. OUTDOOR FURNITURE WITH PIZZAZZ “Living in the sunbelt offers the perfect lifestyle for outdoor entertaining 11 months out of the year,” says Rick Green of Ethan Allen. The first step in transforming a plain backyard into a unique outdoor living space is to select the right furniture. Looking for ornate and traditional or prefer sleek and contemporary? Whatever the homeowner’s personal preference, they are sure to find it, says Green. Ethan Allen, Heritage House, Bronze Lady and Patio Land USA each offer a broad selection of top-quality couches, chairs and dining sets in a vast array of colors, textures and styles.

76

www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Above, Heritage House offers a full range of outdoor lifestyle furniture. Below left, an outdoor dining set from the Biscayne Home & Garden collection by Ethan Allen.

To create a space that flows smoothly from indoors to out, Patio Land USA suggests giving the same attention to an outdoor room as you would to ensuring your living room is “just right.” Carol Brawner of The Bronze Lady agrees. “Big screen TVs and luxury kitchens are now part of the outdoor room so it makes sense to add quality furniture,” says Brawner. “Recliners, daybeds, sofas and sections are very popular right now for people who enjoy an outdoor lifestyle.” Mark Cooper of Heritage House, recommends arranging furniture in a comfortable seating arrangement, then adding extra touches like outdoor area rugs, pillows and even outdoor draperies for a nice finish. Of course, what outdoor living space would be complete with a bar and all of the extras like ice makers, beer tap dispensers and wine cabinet? For the perfect backyard party, Lynn Kislin of Appliance Gallery suggests True Manufacturing’s top-of-the-line dual-tap beverage dispenser. Offer your guests their choice of two frosty, cold draft beers on tap, kept at the perfect temperature, thanks to a digital control panel that has settings as low as 33 degrees.

SURROUND SOUND The Tiki torches are lit, the wine is uncorked and the steaks are sizzling on the grill. Now it’s time to turn on the music. Easy Living With Technology offers James

Loudspeaker, a top-of-the-line sound system. “This is the same company that designs outdoor sound systems for rock concerts and concert halls,” says Mike Stram of Easy Living With Technology. “This is truly a diamond platinum product for anyone who appreciates music.” The outdoor speakers are built to withstand the elements with aircraftgrade extruded aluminum and a micromesh water barrier to prevent water damage. They’re also easily integrated into the landscape with a discreet design made to resemble landscape lighting. THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS: FIRE & WATER In decades past, people came outside to grill and then went back into the house, says Jason Smith of Outdoor Impressions. Not any longer. Now people want to linger,

socialize and relax, especially in a well-designed outdoor living space. One of the most popular trends is to combine the elements of fire and water. Picture fire bowls placed on columns around the pool, a fire pit in one corner of the landscape or fire tables—a small fire pit embedded into a tabletop. “There are unlimited ways to incorporate fire in to the design plan,” says Smith. “The element of fire creates ambience and a sense of intimacy and warmth.” Doug Zettles of Make It Burn agrees. He has created everything from 22-foot outdoor bars with multi-colored LED lights and gas fire tables to an enormous stainless steel dragon overlooking a pool with fire shooting out of its mouth. Talk about the “wow” factor. No backyard design would be complete without the water element. Pat O’Connell of Landmark Pools says infinity-edge and

78 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

edge, is equally in demand. Fire features also play an important role in Landmark-designed backyards. “Fire adds another element to the overall architectural design,” says O’Connell. “It creates a pretty spectacular look when combined with water.” ILLUMINATE YOUR SPACE Chandeliers, sconces, torches, lanterns, pendant lights, track lights, carriage lamps, and even weatherproof table lamps—the sky’s the limit for choices in outdoor lighting these days. “Many of these new products are so attractive they could be used indoors,” says Carmen Ugalde of Lights and More. Solar lights are especially popular for landscaping lighting, says Ugalde. Solar lights offer numerous benefits—they don’t require a complicated installation, you can place them anywhere, they don’t add to the electric bill and they come on automatically at dusk.

no-edge pools and spas continue to be popular, especially paired with travertine paver pool decks. Pre-cast coping, which can create a nice border effect around the pool

Top: A True beverage dispenser and wine cabinet offered by Appliance Gallery. Bottom: Outdoor sound solutions offered by Easy Living With Technology.

Nebula Lighting Systems tackles the challenge of lighting the pool screen enclosure with a patented LED lighting solution. Custom installation is available for new and existing structures, says Jamie Polkosnik of Nebula Lighting. One of the unique features is a dimmer switch that allows homeowners to control the exact amount of light to set the mood, just like you would in the interior of the home. Fortunately, the days when a couple of lawn chairs by the pool would be the extent of backyard dÊcor are long gone. With a little planning and attention to detail, it’s easy to create a sensational outdoor space for entertaining friends or relaxing after a long-hard day at work. dR

Fire Up the Grill

82 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

By Susan B. Barnes

It’s nearly summertime, and the grillin’ is easy. Well, it will be if you’ve got the right tools. As temperatures start to rise in the Tampa Bay area, we’ll all want to take the heat out of the kitchen and into our backyards, giving our air conditioners a bit of a break and enjoying food hot off the grill. “One of the things we’ve seen over the past few years in outdoor grilling and cooking is people designing entire outdoor rooms,” said Gina Lathrum, brand manager with DCS by Fisher & Paykel. “People are investing in and creating spaces outside that mirror their indoor kitchens.” The most popular of DCS’ grills? The 36-inch AllGrill Outdoor Grill (BGB-36BQAR, $3,529), “a great size for a couple or family.” The 36-inch All-Grill also allows the opportunity to build on with a side burner for sauces, and even a griddle for bacon and eggs. Think breakfast, outside! “We want people to be culinary curious about their lifestyles and cooking practices,” said Gina, “and to grow with culinary trends as they evolve. You don’t have to be a professional chef to cook like one!” And you’ll certainly feel like a pro if you opt for Viking’s Ultra-Premium 500 Series Gas Grill ($8,500), available at Williams-Sonoma. Whether you’re roasting a rotisserie chicken for the family, or smoking a platter of meats for a crowd, you’ll feel right at home – and like a pro – behind the grill, which is enhanced by blue LED lights on the knobs and interior halogen lights for nighttime grilling. “People have always liked cooking pizza outdoors,” said Lynn Kislin, owner of Appliance Gallery. In fact, she’s just brought in the new, gas-powered pizza oven from Alfresco (retail $6,000). Alfresco’s gas-powered pizza oven offers an alternative to the wood fire ovens currently on the market. Also new from Alfresco is the charcoal-fueled Kamado ($782).

“Kamado’s egg design is made out of ceramic, almost like clay,” said Julian Exclusa with Ferguson Kitchen, Bath and Lighting. “It gets very hot and stays hot for a long time with a moist, long heat.” And that heat is ideal for slow cooking meats such as a beef brisket or ribs, noted Julian. “You really savor the flavor with the different type of cooking,” said Julian. When it comes to grilling accessories, no one does it better than Williams-Sonoma. For the griller in your household, you may choose the Zwilling J.A. Henckels 4-Piece Grill Tool Set ($286), exclusive to the fine-cooking store. The set includes a slotted turner, tongs, knife and basting brush, all featuring extra-long PakkaWood that keeps working hands out of the heat. As if you’re grilling skills aren’t enough, you’ll truly impress your guests when you serve steak branded with your initials. Williams-Sonoma’s hand-forged Monogrammed Steak Brand is a miniature version of cattle brands used by ranchers, and the Carving Board made of New England birch provides the perfect canvas to present your work of art. (Set: $69.95) With these grills and accessories, you’re sure to become a grill master in no time. What are you waiting for? Go on and fire up the grill! dR

COASTAL CUISINE Sarasota’s

Jack Dusty The words “modern” and “Sarasota” might seem to be in mixed company, but leave it to the luxury landmark of the Ritz-Carlton to combine those two things in the most beautiful way delighting locals and travelers alike in the process. Since opening its doors in January, Jack Dusty—Coastal Cuisine & Crafted Cocktails has been serving up delicious food and drink in a stylish yet unpretentious setting, which brings a refreshing new option to Sarasota foodies, locals and visitors looking for a top-notch dining experience. So, who is Jack Dusty? The restaurant was named for the 18th century term for the naval store clerk whose responsibility included doling out the daily lot of rum to sailors and maintaining the ship’s inventory of food supplies. Today Jack Dusty offers guests a wealth of dining and drinking options with beautiful views of Sarasota Bay and beyond. In keeping with the restaurant’s namesake, it embraces the same sense of community, adventure and whimsy that seafarers shared when they returned home from a long adventure. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, the restaurant’s marketplace offers breakfast fare with coffee, pastries, fresh breads and more, while the dining room is the perfect spot for larger meals. It’s modern American cuisine has a seafood

sensibility with a large selection of raw bar and appetizer offerings like Grouper Cake, Mussels, Oysters, Jack’s Ceviche and more. When foodies are ready for main entrée, they choose between a list of options categorized “By Land” and “By Sea.” Try the grilled Pork Chop with black-eyed peas and seasonal greens or the Red Brick Chicken, a modern twist on the Sicilian classic Chicken Mattone, among

others. Seafood dishes include Blackened Grouper Etouffee with red beans and rice and braised greens; Whole Speared Hog Snapper, fried whole and served with grilled vegetables and a coconut and curry broth; and Sarasota Cioppino, gulf shrimp, bay scallops, clams, mussels and grouper in an orange peel and tomato broth. The Crab and Clam Boil, a signature dish, features seasonal crab, gulf shrimp, clams, mussels, andouille, potatoes and corn on the cob. And you can’t resist the dessert selections at Jack Dusty either. You’ll be enticed with the Doughnut Holes, Chocolate Cake Jar, Build-Your-Own Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich, Sticky Toffee Pudding and more. Follow it up with some Irish Coffee or a Chocolate Martini. Craft microbrews, a broad selection of rums and spirits and an array of specialty Sarasota-inspired cocktails made with

farm fresh ingredients will call you to the bar before and after Your meal. There are three types of must-try cocktails: Sippers (cocktails to be sipped and savored), Gulpers (long, refreshing and swiggable beverages) and Sandy Bottoms (big punches for sharing). For example, the Gulper Sling Hook brings together Don Julio tequila, Grand Marnier, honey, mango, lemon and celery bitters topped with soda and served in a blue salt encrusted glass. After this experience, you’ll be glad you came ashore.

Agrumato of Meyer lemon oil to garnish Hiwa Kai black sea salt to garnish Begin by selecting the mid-section, including the belly cut, from a wild “Springer” king salmon, if available. Otherwise, another high-quality wild salmon will suffice. Remove the pin bones from the salmon, being careful not to damage the flesh. Cut the salmon into ¼-inch thick pieces, and lay in a shingled fashion on a black slate or another plate of your choice. Cut watermelon radishes into 1/8inch “matchsticks,” and place artfully onto salmon. Using the smallest melon baller you can find, cut 12 spheres of apple from a peeled Granny Smith or other tart apple. Drizzle lemon oil onto salmon and add radish and apples. Place micro basil on top of salmon and finish with the Hiwa Kai salt. dR

dreamland creator Jason Hulfish By Melinda Tam Orlando

Artist Jason Hulfish is a dreamland creator for Tampa Bay children. Hulfish, who got his art start by designing t-shirts, now designs out-of-the-box, custom children’s bedrooms. These wonderlands fit each child’s distinct personality and are never duplicated. “Pirate themes and princesses are very popular, but I always make each design custom and unique,” Hulfish says. Three over-the-top projects in his portfolio are a sunken pirate-ship bunk bed, a princess carriage bed made for a client in Morocco and a candy-factory room. Hulfish sticks mainly to residential projects—although he also does commercial designs for churches, doctors’ offices and more—but it’s children’s rooms in particular that he loves designing most. “I’m creating functional art, and these rooms lend well to my style of thinking and my style of art,” explains Hulfish. “Plus, kids take more design risks than their parents do, bigger and over the top while other places in the home are more conservative. I would rather not be conservative.” And people love his non-conservative approach. After two appearFor more information, visit www.jfishart.com 96 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay
