dR PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Free to be Me

Pre-K 3 through 8th Grade Offering a Half-Day Program for Pre-Kindergarten 3 for 2013-2014 Now Accepting Applications

Dear Reader, Welcome to our annual health and beauty issue. It’s that time of year where we tend to assess our inner health and outward appearances and perhaps set some self improvement goals. Be they ever so small or grandiose, we are here to guide you through the latest trends and treatments, programs and procedures. dR HEALTH/BEAUTY explores spa treatments ranging from traditional relaxation techniques to the newest fat removal processes. And if you’re looking for a more extreme makeover we talk to leading local plastic surgeons about the most popular procedures and their benefits. Of course, looking and feeling your best starts on the inside, so in this issue dR TRAVEL takes you to places that inspire a healthier lifestyle. Exclusive fitness camps, adventurous getaways or calming yoga retreats can help jump start your fitness regimen. To continue on your healthy path, dR CULINARY MASTERS brings you only the healthiest recipes from top local chefs. For outdoor activities, we are fortunate to have boating as one of our options here in the bay area. Whether you prefer fishing, sailing or powerboats, our dR FEATURE shares the latest trends and newest models in the boating world. dR FASHION even followed the nautical theme, showcasing spring fashions aboard an Azimut yacht. Last but not least, because I believe feeling good about yourself begins with helping others feel better, I have made a personal commitment to the 4th Annual Bright House Networks Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge. This event raises funds for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, which helps improve the lives of so many kids fighting cancer. As part of the Quantum Leap Team, I will be shaving my head to promote awareness and raise much needed funds. If you would like to contribute to the cause, go to www.fastercure.kintera.org/cutforacure/ QuantumLeap to make a secure donation. To learn more, visit www.QuantumLeapFarm.org. Look for my “after” photo in my Publisher’s Letter in our next issue. Enjoy!

New Dealership For Fields Motorcars Location is the gold standard in real estate. Now the area’s premier MercedesBenz dealership, Fields Motorcars has moved into its brand-new, highly visible location on Interstate 4 at exit 33 in Lakeland. The sleek, contemporary venue offers the same large inventory and competitive pricing on new and pre-owned luxury cars that customers expect, along with favorite perks like free car washes, HäagenDazs ice cream and bagels to keep everyone happy while they visit. 4141 N. Florida Avenue, Lakeland; 888-797-7681. www.fieldsmotorcars.com

Healthy Eating On the Go A popular venue with “indulgently fit prepared meals,” Fitlife Foods has opened a St. Petersburg location, following great success in Tampa and Clearwater. Owner and CEO David Osterweil believes in good food that is nutritious, low-calorie and tasty. The local chain offers healthy meals “to go” for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Fitlife also offers several weight loss programs to help customers meet their health and fitness goals. 3047 4th Street N., St. Petersburg; 727-892-2010. www.eatfitlifefoods.com

Must-Have Bikes For Avid Cyclers Performance Bicycle is opening its first Tampa store. The national retailer of specialty bikes offers both recreational and serious cyclists a large inventory of top brand-name bikes, clothing, helmets and accessories, as well as sports nutrition products. Delicious Dolce In downtown St. Petersburg is Everything Dolce, a trendy dessert bar with pastries created by local executive master chef Michael Ostrander and coffee from Naviera Roasters in Ybor City. Owners Lou Albano and Marilu Rivera took over the former Café Bohemia and refurbished the venue to create a sleek, sophisticated look inside and an outdoor “living room” courtyard where music plays every night of the week. Beer, wine, salads, sandwiches and limited entrees also offered. 937 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. 727-895-4495. www.everythingdolce.com

Physician-Supervised Weight Loss Maintaining weight loss long-term can be challenging for many people. Medi-Weight Loss Clinics offers a physician-supervised program that combines a complete medical exam, weekly one-on-one counseling, education, exercise, access to a patient website and positive reinforcement. “It’s not just about losing weight, it’s also about healthy food choices and making a total lifestyle change,” says Kelli Maw, M.D. The three-phase program includes the initial acute weight loss, a transitional period and maintenance. 24420 State Road 54, Lutz; 813-909-1700 or 4039 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa; 813-281-0500. www.mediweightlossclinics.com

Opening April, 2013 Gourmet Crepes For those who only think of crepes as an upscale breakfast treat, you’ll be surprised to learn that Flying Pan, Tampa’s new crêperie, offers both savory and sweet crepes. Imagine Florentine with baby spinach, feta, mushrooms and Béchamel sauce, or the Thai Twister with chicken, basil, mint, peanut sauce, chili flakes and crushed peanuts. For decadence, how about Apple Pie with apple compote, cinnamon, whipped cream and ice cream. 2702 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. www.flyingpan.com

Expect the unexpected at Datz’ new sister bakery, Dough. Oversized exotic doughnuts exist side-by-side with elegant chocolate creations and delicate sandwiches with ingredients as diverse as Parisian ham and Armagnac roasted apricots. Morning (and afternoon!) coffee is a highlight with custom flavors being blended into traditional beverages or funky versions such as a house specialty, bacon latte. After dinner come for a sampling of house made gelato or a boozy milkshake of vanilla gelato and bourbon. Dough is an entity with a bold, playful approach to baking. 2602 S. TO GET FIT—GET OUT OF TOWN! The way people vacation is changing. Sure, we still want to laze around and relax, leaving the stresses of the everyday world behind. But more and more, we’re looking for something active to blend into our precious vacation time. Following this trend, myriad resorts and traveling spas, if you will, offer wellness retreats and getaways for those looking to get fit, or simply try new things to boost what they’re already doing. Escape to Shape is one traveling spa that offers vacation opportunities that combine fitness, luxury and culture in unique locations worldwide. The programs offered combine luxurious accommodations; total body workouts, including yoga, Pilates, circuit training, hiking, kayaking, biking (depending on location), organic (when possible) local cuisine, cultural excursions and classes, and relaxing spa treatments. This summer (May–October), Escape to Shape is offering seven-night Destination Detox programs in Hudson,

New York—a body, mind and spirit approach to wellness. Park City is a beautiful location any time of year, which makes it an ideal place to get healthy when your calendar allows you to get away. Inspire Fit Resort offers a weight loss program that truly covers all the bases— a health evaluation, including blood and physical tests, and a lifestyle assessment, resulting in a personalized plan that will work for you, in your life. You’ll meet with the resort’s medical staff, exercise physiologist and registered dietician, all of whom have one goal—to make the most of your stay. And once you leave, healthy living coaching is available to keep you on track. You know what they say—couples that exercise together, lose weight together. One Fitness Camp, also in Park City, offers a couples package that will get both of you moving—together! Cardio and weight training will get your heartbeats up, and you’ll learn how to beat your weight-gain triggers. Knowledge is power at One Fitness Camp!

Hilton Head Health for Weight Loss in South Carolina is another program that will help you with the pounds that just won’t come off. And they have a proven track record—more than 68% off their guests lose weight and keep it off after returning home. You can’t beat that! During your stay at Hilton Head Health, your program will combine healthy eating, exercise and education to give you the tools and knowledge you need to lose weight, and keep it off! One of the programs at Hilton Head Health is the Healthy Kitchen—an opportunity to either enjoy a fine dining experience, or take a hands-on, interactive healthy cooking class. This way, you can take what you learn home with you, continuing your new healthy living lifestyle. The Hills Healthy Ranch is a spa vacation resort in British Columbia that specializes in weight loss, fitness and world-class, gourmet spa cuisine. for outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, canoeing and biking, not to mention yoga, Pilates and aerobics, too. Specialized programs at The Hills include 6-, 10- and 30-night weight loss programs, as well as personal training programs, hiking and spa programs, horseback programs and smoking cessation programs. Whether you’re looking to get fit and toned, or need to lose more than 50 pounds, Premier Fitness Camp at La Costa Resort and Spa in Southern California welcomes you with open doors. Your days will be filled with physical activities that get your blood pumping—working with per-

nary and adventure. What’s best, the choice is yours. In Austin, you may take Pilates, yoga, or dance fitness classes, and follow that up with ziplining or taking on the challenge course, maybe even a sunrise horseback ride or a sunset hike. Or, grab the bull by the horns and get in a mechanical bull riding workout—yes, that’s an option! If you’re in Maui, Travassa offers the same types of wellness experiences, but rather than mechanical bull riding, give your hips a shake in hula class, go thrownet fishing, or snorkel the warm, crystalclear, blue waters. Miraval Resorts in Tucson offers loads of fitness and wellness activities—there’s almost too much to choose from! Hit the courts with Rock ‘N Roll Tennis, get in a high-cardio workout through Cardio Drumming, or combine cardio boxing and ballet techniques in Power, Punch and Plié, to name just a few. If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve found it with activities such as Desert Tightrope, Swing and a Prayer and Rock Climbing—the desert’s your playground! Back at the resort, relax in the spa and dine on scrumptious, healthy meals that will recharge you for your next adventure. And when it’s time to return home, take a bit of Miraval living home with you with Mindful Living, a guide on how to live the experience every day.

CRUISING IN STYLE

What’s New For The Boating Lifestyle?

Recreational boating is big business and in Florida, where the boating season is about to kick into high gear, it’s almost a passion. Whether you’re cruising to Boca Grande for a weekend of fishing, going to the Keys to dive for lobsters or just relaxing with the family, Tampa Bay offers the perfect lifestyle for fun on the water. Fresh from the February Miami Boat Show, Tampa Bay boating experts talk about what’s new for 2013.

The WOW Factor MarineMax recently delivered the first Azimut 55S to a customer in Clearwater, after the new high-end sport model made its American debut at the Miami Boat Show. 38 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Above: MarineMax is the U.S. dealer for the luxury Italian boat builder, Azimut yachts. Right: The new Azimut 55S features three upscale staterooms.

“Azimut is known for its creative, European styling and innovation,” says Scott Robertson of MarineMax, the U.S. dealer for the Italian boat builder. “The Azimut 55S is a good example. This is a very cool boat with lots of extras normally found only in much larger boats. It took off like crazy at the boat show and we already have five or six sold.”

The new boat features include three staterooms, triple engines with joy-stick control, top speed of 36 knots, a large sliding sun roof, both bench and sun-pad seating and a stern garage door that flips down to become a wide swim platform and beach. The garage door can also be lowered to launch and recover the 11-foot Williams jet tender.

Italian Luxury Meets the American Dream

MarineMax is now the exclusive Azimut Yachts dealer in the United States As the nationÂ’s largest yachting retailer, MarineMax has expanded its relationship with Italy-based Azimut-Benetti Group to become the exclusive Azimut dealer for the United States. Each model in AzimutÂ’s various collections has been considered a yacht ahead of its time, making Azimut the number one selling European brand in North America. Performance & Power Statement Marine also made a big splash at the Miami Boat show with several of its high-performance powerboats—the new, top-of-the-line 50-foot luxury catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 1350s; a 42-foot V-bottom Ultimate powered by twin 1100s; the company’s first quad-engine 38-foot center console and a 35-foot center console, says Nick Buis, cofounder with Todd Werner. “Our 35-foot and 38-foot center consoles are both very popular because they can be configured to accommodate a wide range of activities,” says Buis. “The 35 can be built with wraparound seating in the bow, or as a full open, which is

great for fishermen. The 38 can be built with an open bow or a forward cuddy cabin. For the 38 we offer a wide range of power options including twin, triple or quad outboards, or even stern drives.” Statement scored a major promotional coup with news that its 42-foot Ultimate, tricked out in a wild orange and green metallic paint scheme, will appear in the upcoming film Pain & Gain, starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson. The movie is scheduled to be out by the end of April.

Day Cruising Formula Boats has introduced the new 350 CRB, a 35-foot crossover bow rider with an air conditioned cabin that features

a queen-sized berth, small galley and private head. “They’re all the rage for day trips, overnights and entertaining,” says Tim DeVries, regional sales manager for Tampa Bay. “There’s tons of room on deck so it’s a great party boat.” To make boat handling smooth and easy, DeVries says a must-have new accessory is the Mercury’ Axius joystick, which offers fingertip power and control. “I’ve been boating since I was 12 and it’s still easy to get anxious when it’s time to dock the boat,” says DeVries. “With the Axius, steering the boat is as easy as driving a car. First-time boaters feel like a pro. It takes all the worry out of boating.” Pursuit Sport Coupe 365 is Quality

Must-Have Accessories There are many reasons for lifting your boat out of the water—to keep it clean, prevent the growth of algae or simply avoid getting banged up. Now, it just got easier and more aesthetically pleasing with a beamless lift that Deco Power Lift calls the “flagship lift in the boatlift industry.” “It’s very functional and useful; it makes the boat much more accessible,” says Ken Spencer, Deco Power Lift sales 44 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

manager. “It’s great for maintenance, service and cleaning.” Deco Power Lift also offers a patented cable retention that prevents cable spooling and overlap. “This product offers boaters worry-free lifting by preventing cables from getting tangled up, which can

happen with low tide, shallow water, or boat wake from high traffic,” says Spencer. Quality T-Tops and Boating Accessories has built its reputation on customizing boats of all sizes with installations of T-tops and towers, says Kevin Meisman, one of the owners of the

family-run business. What's new in T-tops? The latest trend is a top that looks streamlined and modern with a clean finish and no screw holes showing, says Meisman. Quality T-Tops has also been busy installing LED lighting for customers. “LED lighting is not new, but the lights are being used in interesting ways to set the mood, such as multicolor lights underwater or accent lights on the deck and interior,” says Meisman. Local company ShadowCaster manufactures many of the marine LED lights that Quality T-Tops uses in its custom installations. Shadow-Caster’s multi-color underwater lights and accent lights for the deck and interior are among the products Meisman uses for a custom install. LEDs use less power and they can be installed creatively to really set the mood on board and or in the water, where they not only cast a cool glow but attract fish.

The Wind in My Sails SailTime Tampa Bay, the area’s largest fractional ownership company, has added three new custom yachts to its line-up of sailing fleets—two Marlow-Hunter 36s and a MarlowHunter 33. “It’s all about giving the customer the extra wow factors,” says Martin Town of SailTime Tampa Bay. The boats have the latest technology and some new design features. These include a new layout for the shower head area, electric fresh water heads, a flip table that replaces the chart table to make the salon bigger, flat screen TVs and autopilot, among other perks. SailTime also offers four other Hunters ranging in size from 39 to 41, 45 and 50, along with a sailing school, corporate day events, charter program and pre-owned sales program. Whether you’re into sail or power, this year’s new products promise to make the boating season safe, enjoyable and entertaining. dR

SPRING FORWARD WITH GREAT HAIR

H

Hemlines aren’t the only way to turn heads and make headlines. Hair has always been our crowning glory and a great way to pull together an up-to-date look for Spring. One thing is for certain, there is a movement towards a more natural look and demand for gentle, chemical-free products. We asked local salon owners for their expert advice on where they get their inspiration and on the latest looks for your locks. “The European trends in hair are the extremes,” says Barbara Fasano, an Italian native and owner of Bell’Arte Hair Studio in Tampa. The salon, formerly called Spa Bella Salon, is a premier European-style natural hair salon run by Fasano. “Hair is either pin-straight or messy, big curls.” Looking at what’s going on in fashion can also provide a helpful guide to knowing what to do with your hair. Spring fashions are bright, bold, and geometric patterns—a look back at 60’s mod and 80’s neon. “If clothes are bold and busy you should tone down your hair to be more subtle,” says Darren Peña, owner of Darren Peña Salon and Spa in Tampa. “If clothes are more soft and muted then you can pop the color and play with texture.” Bangs are popular in both Europe and stateside. With good reason, bangs are a quick and easy way to give you a youthful

appearance while maintaining your hair length. It can also add variety to your look over time. “You will achieve different looks as they grow out,” says Peña. “The big trend in hair is extensions,” says Fasano. “People want length.” The resurgence in popularity for hair extensions can be attributed to improved techniques with products such as Keratin Bonded or Microlinks that offers a safe and gentle way to achieve longer, fuller hair without harsh heat guns or solvents. This revolutionary technique uses a tiny cupped tip lined with a layer of keratin that bonds to the hair keeping it from direct contact with metal. “Not only does this method protect the hair, but it actually strengthens the area,” says Peña. Color is also making a big splash in Spring. The ombre look, popular last year, has evolved to the next level. “It’s a prettier more natural look now,” says Fasano. No longer so severe, it is a more wearable and flattering look. “The baseline color is a natural darker tone of browns, reds, or blondes” Peña notes. “There are pops of lighter tones around the perimeter of the hair.” New products like Pureology’s Raving Red help keep color intense. “Reds are the most difficult color to maintain because of the sun,” Peña says. “This product gives shine and vibrancy to red colors.”

“All types of texture are in now,” Peña says. “The soft touchable look of big curls and waves are popular.” Keratin treatments are still big for achieving the stick straight look or to diminish frizz for curly hair. Fasano likes Global Keratin’s The Best products because it is fume-free and formaldyhyde-free, great for both the clients and stylists. “There is no more three-day wait time with this product,” Fasano says. “You can wash your hair right away or go to the pool now.” Eye lashes are also front and center this season with the rise in popularity of individual lash extensions. This treatment doesn’t come cheap, but packs an amazing end result. “People want the doe-eyed look,” Peña says. “They really make your eyes pop.” Spring has sprung. Take advantage of the many ways available to give yourself a fashionable, head-turning look forward. dR

BATHING IN LUXURY Taking a bath can be for more than just simply relaxing. The bathing experience now comes with tons of unique health and beauty benefits, thanks to a revolutionary new product by Jason International. MicroSilk® is an innovative new form of hydrotherapy created with oxygen-rich microbubbles that work to enhance and improve your skin’s health and

vitality. These tiny miracle bubbles work together to form a cloud of oxygen in your bath—increasing your bath’s oxygen levels up to 70 percent higher than common tap water—giving you a delightful, effervescent sensation like you’ve never felt before. The increased oxygen level energizes cells, stimulates the immune system, kills bacteria and promotes healing.

“MicroSilk® is an innovative new form of hydrotherapy created with oxygen-rich microbubbles.”

And if that wasn’t enough, those bubbles do even more. Individually, the microbubbles gently deep-clean your pores while moisturizing your skin. These bubbles bond to your skin’s impurities and gently lift them away, leaving your skin fresh and clean. Essentially, it is like giving your entire body a facial, and what doesn’t sound amazing about that? MicroSilk also makes you look younger, by moisturizing and plumping your skin to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, when the microbubbles collapse in the water, they release their heat energy, which keeps your bath consistently warm without the need to add more hot water. The steady rise in body temperature increases cardiovascular activity while the release of heat energy from the bubbles gives you an improved “sauna effect.” This effect opens pores, allowing in more moisture. And it’s no wonder that this technology comes from Jason International, owned and operated by the Jacuzzi family, a company and family steeped in the tradition of developing hydrotherapy firsts. MicroSilk® is available in a variety of bath designs and can be combined with Jason International’s complete line of hydrotherapy. www.jasoninternational.com dR

EXTREME SPA TREATMENTS How far will you go for beauty? By Erika Vidal Holmes ogy—Ultherapy is touted as the only noninvasive treatment that can specifically target the “deep foundation below the skin.” The unique ultrasound imaging (similar to what an expecting mother might experience during an ultrasound) allows the administrator to actually see the layers of tissue during treatment to make sure the energy is “deposited” in the right place for maximum effectiveness. An ideal lunchtime lift, the procedure takes only 30–60 minutes, and while plenty of patients see immediate results, most people won’t see their final result for two to three months of lifting.

Cutting Edge without the Cutting: Ultherapy

Natural Mood-Booster: Enlightenment Service

This is a new category in aesthetics that uses ultrasound technology to lift the brow, face and neck. It uses ultrasound— yep, ultrasound—to stimulate the deep structural-support layers of the skin, including those usually addressed under the knife. The system heats the tissue to lift and tighten loose skin and also creates new collagen. Offered by Dr. Anitha Reddy of M.D. Aesthetics and Wellness Institute—the first establishment to offer this technol-

As director of spa and beach club at Sandpearl in Clearwater, Maureen Vippermann has been in the industry for a long time and she’s seen it all. “I’ve never been one to follow trends, because they come and go. I like to stay really true to the nature of what we do,” she says. Despite her traditional approach, the menu of treatments she’s helped craft at Sandpearl yield extreme relaxation. The most unique is the spa’s Enlightenment Service, a two-hour ritual that

In the world of “spa-ing,” just about anything goes when it comes to achieving beauty and eternal youth. Fish eating dead cells off your feet? Check. A few minutes in a cryogenic chamber set at around negative 184 degrees Fahrenheit? Check. These treatments really do exist— and they were all dreamt up in the name of beauty. The Bay area has its fair share of beauty and medical spas, and while most of them don’t quite go to the extremes mentioned above, there are plenty of jaw-dropping treatments and services to go around. We’ve rounded up a few of Tampa Bay’s most unique offerings in the realm of mind, body and soul.

takes its cues from Eastern modality and entails a combination of Eastern massage technique, aromatherapy and reflexology. Sounds ordinary enough, but there’s a mystical element to this treatment that makes it intriguing. Your artisan (the person performing the ritual) will present you with a tray of glass in-spa-ration stones and ask you to place your hand over them while silently setting your intention. Your intention could be “I need a job” or “I want to find love” … whatever you want out of life at that moment. You’ll then be asked to choose a stone. Each stone has a word carved on it, but you won’t be able to see what word you’ve chosen. While the artisan performs the ritual—a relaxing blend of massage therapy and reflexology— they’re setting their “intention” for you. At the end of the session (when you’re so relaxed you can barely open your eyes) your artisan will hand you the stone you selected so you can view the word. “Every single time, it is a ‘wow’ factor,” says Maureen. “That was the word they needed. Whether it was weight, love, healing, peace, joy, friendship. Every time, they pick the stone that resonates.” The treatment’s ultimate goal is to help rebuild balance and lift people out of

depression and disorders. There may not be any bird feces or man-eating fish involved, but put simply, says Maureen, “You come out in a good mood.”

Breathe in, Breathe Out: Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Warning: This one’s not for the claustrophobic. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100-percent pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. The therapy is a proven treatment for the bends and other medical ailments, but celebrities have long experimented with it for its supposed healing powers. Jayne Hyduk, massage therapist at The Grand Beauty Spa in Tampa, which offers the treatment, says anyone could be a good candidate for this therapy. “It targets people who are overstressed or coming out of hospital, or if you’ve been

traveling a lot,” she says. How it works: You climb into the capsule-like chamber and relax. They’ll start the pressure and oxygen in the chamber slowly. Once at full pressure, the chamber is getting 100% oxygen. “It’s kind of like being up in an airplane, so your ears may pop a little bit,” says Jayne. “You come out feeling like you’ve had a full night’s sleep.”

The treatment is said to promote relaxation, stimulate the body's self-healing process, reduce fatigue, increase energy and more. To see maximum results, specialists recommend three 45-60minute sessions a week for four to six weeks. You can try this out yourself at Tampa’s own The Grand Beauty Spa. dR

SMILES WORTH SMILING ABOUT SAND WORDS, but what is the smile on your face within that picture worth? If you aren’t flashing a million-dollar smile, it’s time to learn about some of the advancements in cosmetic dentistry. We spoke to two top industry professionals about the major misconceptions about cosmetic dentistry as well as top trends.

The Misconceptions It’s no secret that many people fear the dentist: They put off their regular checkups, wait weeks to get a problem treated and dread each appointment. But Randy Feldman of Feldman Orthodontics in Tampa says there’s no reason to fear cosmetic dentistry. “With all the advancements in pain management and numbing techniques, cosmetic dentistry can be pretty painless. Plus, the work can be less expensive than what you think.” And the results last a lifetime!

Trend No. 1: No More Metal Mouths Remember the old days when braces meant wires, brackets and several food restrictions? Many patients now turn to Invisalign. Frederick Vance of Enlow & Vance Dental Partners in Tampa explains, “Although the initial purpose of Invisalign for the patient is to simply straighten teeth, the added benefit is a good bite, stable jaw joints and muscles that work in proper coordination. We do recommend the Invisalign option to our patients over traditional orthodontics for many reasons. It is practically invisible and painless, and it is not disruptive or inconvenient to the patient.” Plus, Invisalign’s aligners are smooth, comfortable, removable for cleaning and allow you to eat whatever you want.

Trend No. 2: Pearly Whites, Please There are many over-the-counter whitening systems, but you’ll get a more long54 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

lasting, brighter smile by visiting your dentist. “The increased efficacy, or effectiveness, of office whitening products rather than the over-the-counter whitening products is due to the higher concentration of the peroxide-based whitening gel that we are capable of using,” Vance says. With inoffice bleaching, the whitening product is applied directly to the teeth in combination with heat, a special light or a laser. “The most common negative side effect of any whitening process is tooth sensitivity and pain (i.e. zingers). This is best controlled with in office whitening and professional monitoring.”

Trend No. 3: It’s a Social Event Nowadays, people love a big makeover, and the same is true in cosmetic dentistry. Instead of just straightening, your dentist can outline a custom plan for your smile. First, you’ll review the “social six,” or the upper six front teeth, for color, contour, shape, size and gum outline. Then, your dentist will assess the rest of your smile, and create a custom plan of attack for you.

“Veneers are not always the best choice,” Feldman explains. “Sometimes a better result comes from a combination of orthodontics, bleaching and bonding instead.”

Trend No. 4: A Loving Relationship You wouldn’t believe what a critical role your lips play in the look of your smile, so it’s no wonder that more dentists are using dermal fillers to create fuller lips. “The lips really support your smile so it’s important to look at the teeth, lip and smile relationship,” Feldman says. In addition, the field is helping patients improve overall health, well-being and appearance through a multidisciplinary approach. “Cosmetic dentistry is but one facet of the esthetic continuum of services offered in our practice,” Vance says. “We offer Botox and dermal fillers. Our in-office massage therapist is trained in a variety of treatment options including neuromuscular, lymphatic drainage, cranial sacral, pre-natal and relaxation massage. We provide anti-aging facials with a licensed esthetician and various laser treatments on a regular schedule.” dR

Better Health and Beauty begins with a Smile From general dentistry to complete smile makeovers Did you know that daily plaque control can add 10 years to your life? According to Surgeon General C. Everet Koop and the latest research, there is a significant link between the health of your mouth and your whole body. We now know that bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and contribute to conditions such as strokes and heart attacks. In fact, According to the American Academy of Periodontology, people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to have heart disease. Another recent study found that the presence of common problems in the mouth, including gum disease (gingivitis), cavities, and missing teeth, were as good at predicting heart disease as cholesterol levels.

For over 10 years, Dr. Miller has been using his knowledge, skill and judgement to provide dentistry that not only creates beautiful smiles, but also improves your total health. For over 10 years, Dr. Miller has been using his knowledge, skill and judgement to provide dentistry that not only creates beautiful smiles, but also improves your total health. He looks at the overall patient to develop a plan to create a healthier, long-lasting, beautiful smile. He starts by creating healthy gums and cavity free teeth. Things have to work right before they can look good. Cosmetic dental treatment is based on artistic creation in a framework of science that requires extensive knowledge and experience to be done correctly. Dr. Miller utilizes cutting edge technology in a modern and innovative setting. The result is dentistry that is comfortable, long-lasting, and natural-looking. He is one of a handful of dentists that use a new computerized anesthetic delivery system that numbs only the tooth being worked on. Gone are the days where you leave the dental office with the "fat face" feeling that often lasts for hours after an appointment.

Did you know that half of the cavities found in your teeth could go undetected by traditional diagnostic techniques? Good dentistry is more than excellent clinical skills and state-of-theart equipment. Establishing lasting relationships with patients, based upon mutual trust and open communication, is an important factor. Dr. Miller has created a state-of-the art practice in a comfortable setting where you feel personally cared for and pampered. REJUVENATING FACE & BODY FOR SPRING

By Janan Talafer

New Trends in Cosmetic Procedures IT’S

PLASTIC SURGEONS REPORTS MORE THAN 9 MILLION MEN AND WOMEN UNDERWENT A SURGICAL OR NONSURGICAL COSMETIC PROCEDURE LAST YEAR. TREATMENTS THAT ERASE SUN DAMAGE, MAKE YOUR FACE LOOK YOUNGER, YOUR BODY MORE FIT AND YOUR OVERALL APPEARANCE MORE ATTRACTIVE ARE GROWING IN POPULARITY, ACCEPTANCE, SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS. WHETHER YOU’RE INTERESTED IN A SUBTLE OR DRAMATIC CHANGE, SPRING SEEMS LIKE THE PERFECT TIME OF YEAR TO CONSIDER WHAT’S POSSIBLE IN BODY AND FACE REJUVENATION. NOT SURPRISING THAT THE

Eleanor Barone, M.D., of Avanti Aesthetic Surgery, finds that minimally invasive procedures that don’t require a lot of downtime or expense are in big demand. “Everyone wants to look their best in a challenging, competitive job market,” she says. There’s also a lot of demand for what she calls “Beauty 911”—a “little fluff and puff” before a big occasion like a class reunion, wedding or other special event. The Viora Reaction is a popular procedure she offers that combines radiofrequency laser energy with vacuum rollers to shrink fat cells, reduce cellulite and stimulate the collage to help tighten the skin. This is a good technique to achieve what Dr. Barone calls “circumferential reduction.” Because radiofrequency energy can be

He offers Fractora Firm for a fast and effective way to tighten the skin on the face, neck or body, as well as correct changes from age and sun damage. The procedure, which was recently aired on the Dr. Oz show and Having it All with super model Niki Taylor, offers “phenomenal results in a short amount of time,” says Dr. Nelson. How does radiofrequency energy work? It gently heats the collagen under the skin’s surface, causing it to contract, restructure and tighten, says Dr. Nelson. Built-in temperature mechanisms in the Fractora Firm eliminate any potential for overheating the skin, making it ideal for treating the neck, chest, upper and lower eyelids, hands and other sensitive areas.

Plump Up The Volume Injectable fillers are among the most popular items at Lecada Medical Artistry for giving a more youthful look to the face, says Dana Martinez, the founder and CEO of the practice. “Aging actually starts from the top at the temples, with the skin being pulled down toward the jaw line,” says Martinez.

“Like a makeup artist, we’re looking for hollows and shadows and then using filler to make the face fuller and give it more contour. It lifts everything up.” The possibilities are endless with fillers, says Martinez. A combination of filler and Botox can also be used for a under-eye lift. It can used around the lips to eliminate the “turned down” look that makes some people appear sad or angry. And, it’s ideal for changing the appearance of the nose—a nonsurgical rhinoplasty. “We can fill in the little bumps and dips with filler and mold the nose exactly the way we want,” says Martinez.

More Permanent Change Jeremy Benedetti, M.D. of Benedetti Cosmetic Surgery agrees that “there is no question that there’s a huge trend toward less invasive procedures. But for women who want a more significant, permanent change, surgery is still the solution. Breast augmentation is the number

one surgical procedure requested, he says. What’s new in the technique? Like every aspect of surgery these days, the move is toward less trauma. “We’re placing the vast majority of implants behind the pectoral muscle, which involves less injury to the muscle, leaving the patient with more support and longerlasting results,” says Dr. Benedetti. This technique is more technically difficult, but offers numerous advantages, including giving patients a more natural look. More natural, less artificial is also the idea behind a soon to be released naturally shaped implant. However, cautions Dr. Benedetti, not everyone will be a good candidate. “You want to be careful that a more naturally shaped implant won’t over accentuate an already very tear-drop shaped post-pregnancy breast.” To help women gain a better understanding of how breast augmentation might benefit their body shape and appearance, Bruce Landon, M.D., of Landon Plastic Surgery, offers the 3D Vectra Breast Simulator. The solution is the Vectra Breast Simulator, which allows patients to “take a set of implants on a sort of virtual road trip,” says the doctor. The patient’s exact dimensions are downloaded into the hightech computerized equipment, which then offers a three-dimensional image at various levels of enhancement. “It is a much more effective way to see how your own body would look at different cup sizes, rather than looking at before and after photos of other patients,” says Dr. Landon. “Now patients can see exactly what the end product will look like before they undergo the surgery.” dR

JUST SAY AHHH… Massages to relax, energize and make you feel like you’re ready to take on the world. By Susan B. Barnes Today’s spas offer several types of massage techniques, many of which have come to be standard for spa-goers—albeit thoroughly enjoyable—including Swedish and hot stone massages. As with any business, the spa industry is constantly evolving, and different techniques are being introduced with regularity. According to SpaFinder® Wellness’ “2013 Top 10 Global Spa & Wellness Trends Forecast,” authentic Ayurveda and other ancient treatments will be gaining in popularity this year. “Best known is the 3,500-year-old, Indian-born Ayurveda, a complex medical system identifying imbalances in a person’s ‘doshas,’ and prescribing a personalized, detoxifying regime of diet change, exercise, meditation, massage and herbal medicine,” reads the forecast. The Thai Yoga Massage offered at the Oasis Therapy Center at Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach is one such treatment. Though Thai massage has been around for more than

2,000 years, it’s a relatively new technique to many spa-goers. Unlike many massages, you are fullyclothed as your therapist uses yoga-like movements and a meditative approach to stimulate your internal organs, realign your body structure, and increase flexibility, digestion, energy flow and immune support. At the end of the two-hour session, you’ll feel relaxed, energized and ready to take on the world. Harking back even further, the Egyptian Ritual at Auberge du Jeu de Paume in Chantilly, France, incorporates an Egyptian massage, which was the beauty secret of Queen Nefertiti. Warm jasmine oil is drizzled over your body and pressure applied to specific areas, effectively eliminating any tight muscles or nervous tensions, essentially ridding the body of any stress or anxiety. The Intercontinental Miami’s Raindrop Experience, designed by mySpa Director Brandon Materre and exclusive to the Miami property, also focuses on relaxation and detoxification. Through the use

of aromatic essential oils applied directly to your spine—a blend of basil, thyme, wintergreen, cyprus, marjoram, clary sage and peppermint—your therapist will use various massage techniques, personalized just for you, depending on where any physical or emotional blockages may lie. The massage treatment also includes stretching that focuses on the abdomen and digestive tract. “Wellness and immunity originates in the core, or abdomen, area of the body,” said Materre. “The core portion of the Raindrop Experience is timed about an hour into the massage in order to maximize the benefits,” she continued. Closer to the Tampa Bay area, the Sandpearl Spa offers Mind Body Spirit treatments that incorporate a complete, full-body Ayurvedic massage. The Ayurvedic technique includes your hands, feet and scalp, which may be overlooked in other full-body massage techniques. “The benefit of focusing on these extremities is that the body is treated as

a whole, improving circulation, stimulation, detoxification and relaxation,” said Maureen Vipperman, director, Sandpearl Spa. In addition, according to Vipperman, Sandpearl Spa’s Mind Body Spirit treatments yield even more benefits, including the slowing down of the adrenal glands, which reduces stress and also helps the body produce cortisol, bringing about easier weight loss and putting the body into a better balance. “With less energy being relegated to deal with stress, the body can attend more to healing itself and exerting itself in better ways,” said Vipperman. Even closer to home—is there anything more luxurious than an in-home massage? Fortunately for those of us in the Tampa Bay area, several highly sought-after therapists, like Massage by Jaime, do offer personalized in-home massages. If you want to fall asleep in your own bed whilst being massaged, you may want to look into the Amazing Bed—a décorfriendly bed that provides a relaxing, fullbody massage. And when the massage is over, the massage system essentially melts away, leaving a comfortable, fullysupportive bed for a good night’s sleep. Whichever massage technique you choose—it does a body good! dR

2014 JAGUAR F-TYPE By Ed Jones Since the Jaguar E-Type ended production in 1974, Jaguar has been out of the small sports car game. In 2000, they dabbled with the idea of the F-Type, and then in 2011 tried with the C-X16. These concepts never came to fruition, ending the hopes of a Jaguar sports car. That is, until now. In 2012, Jaguar unveiled the car that will throw their hat into the sports-car market once again: the 2014 Jaguar F-type, a convertible meant to thrill. The F-type is powered by either a V-6 or a V-8, both supercharged. The base F-type has a V-6 heart that puts out 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque; the next step up is the F-type S, which still has the V6, but this

time has 380 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. The V-8 S sports the V-8 engine that produces 495 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The S models feature launch control, changes to the supercharger boost, an optional exhaust system, and better performance compared to the base model. The 0–60 mph times for the base model, F-type S and V8 S are: 5.1, 4.8 and 4.2 seconds, respectively. The top speed of each of these cars has been electronically limited, with the V-8 S having the highest top speed of 186 mph. Jaguar is equipping each of the launch models with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission, which is pro-

Jaguar is also planning on offering a manual transmission for the F-type and other models in the near future. The 2014 Jaguar F-type will be in your local dealership this summer. The base F-type model will start at $69,000, the F-type S at $81,000, and the F-type V-8 S at $92,000. A coupe version is also in the works, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Jaguar made that one the most hardcore of them all. dR

the charismatic and talented Duncan McClellan

There are few patrons of the St. Petersburg arts community who aren’t familiar with the charismatic and talented Duncan McClellan. His magnetic personality is the perfect complement to the colorful and intricate glasswork he creates at his stunning Warehouse Arts District gallery and hot shop. In addition to showcasing world-class art, the gallery also serves as Duncan’s home. He and fiancée, Irene Winn, have incorporated art in unusual places throughout the property. The large, etched glass shower, inspired by Duncan’s work, is perhaps the gallery’s best-known piece! The art continues into the courtyard, where myriad pieces can be found Photo courtesy of Duncan McClellan Gallery

amid the lush fruit trees and tropical foliage. The Duncan McClellan Gallery and St. Petersburg Hot Glass Workshop have become the place to see and be seen on Second Saturday Art Walks in St. Petersburg. Since January 19, when over a thousand people celebrated the grand opening of the hot shop, Duncan has continued to expand his vision for the future. Duncan and his staff have partnered with the Pinellas County School District to provide hands-on art experiences to students and teachers. This spring, the gallery will be hosting its inaugural “experience with an artist” featuring local cuisine and renowned glass artist,
