It’s not uncommon, she explained, for four or five workeers to encroach on her retirement liffe ever e y week: “I don’t feel free to leave my home, even e with the security system. It’s ridiculous. I decided it was time to do what I want to do o” — to find a home that givves her more freedom. Mrs. Ever e ett found her liberaating solution in early 2015 while visiting Belleair Country Club, where she frequ uently dines and playys bridge. The club is directly across from Belleview Place, a new community of 104 condominium and 28 carriage homes by JMC Communities that was then undergoing site planning. The community is now rising on the site of the historic Belleview Biltmore Hotel in the secluded and stylish co ommunity of Belleair. Mrs. Everett u chased a three-bedroom, two-a pur o nda--half bath corner condominium home with two terraces, which, she said, “will give me beautifful views of the water over the golf course.” Ultimately, “It was very much a busineess decision,,” she said. “It costs me th hree times as much for exterior maintenance and insurance here as it will at Belleview Place. That’s not counting the in nside!” At her doorstep will be the Belleview n a multimillion-dollar renovation Inn, of the main lobby and guest rooms of the historic hotel, with original materials and embellishments, including

The community pool is ad djacent to the Inn, and residents may use its fitness center and events facilities. “It will be such a wonderful place to share with guestss,,” said Mrs. Eveerett, “some place you can have them close by and off ffeer them m all the privacy they want.” Belleview Placee’s first building is scheduled for completion in early 2018 — another plus for Mrs. Eveerett: “It givees me plenty of time to get everything done: sell my my house, sort out my things and organize myy liffe.” It seems she is not merelyy buying a fabulous new home; she’s truly buying time to en njoy as she pleases. Dear Reader, Welcome! This is our home design and furnishing issue, where you will find interesting, stimulating and unusual trends and ideas that we have captured in our HOME FEATURES. For your reading and viewing pleasure, we have gone as far as California, and we’ve included the latest in yachting interiors as well. Our feature on “The Disco House” invites you into a one-of-a-kind home that stimulates your senses, yet at the same time, gives you a feeling of subliminal comfort. This unique west coast residence was designed and decorated to capture an extraordinary amount of natural light from a large number of windows, doors and skylights. This makes the continual mix of bright colors, fine art, fabrics and finishes seem all the more inviting. In an unusual twist, most of the fabulous contemporary art came from Tampa sources despite the West Coast location of the home. Maybe Tampa is really the First West Coast! After investigating the fabulous interiors of a single residence, we asked our experts to outline the latest trends when “Creating Extraordinary Spaces”. Minimalist design is “in” and sure to last, as we all continue to move rapidly through our lives, and we have a need for efficiency and without distractions. Of course, Florida living beckons us outside to enjoy the mild climate that is available most of the year. Kitchens -- they are the place for everyone to gather … but, again, no clutter. Design trends, then, are clean, efficient, and functional. But, don’t forget the good old fashioned outdoor backyard barbeque. A staple in the Tampa Bay area -- just keep it simple! Just in case you are looking to decorate your new yacht, we wanted to have some thoughts on the latest in “Sublime Seafaring Spaces”. Not everyone has access to interior spaces on the open seas, but almost everyone likes to look. It’s interesting that yachting interiors are trending toward earth tones and wood finishes. I guess that is because the turquoise blue and green seascape is just outside the windows. These are just a few of our special features in this Fall issue. In keeping with our interest in people, our BACK PAGE feature is focused on Julie & Steve Weintraub. Julie, Steve, and their entire family, along with their fast-growing jewelry business, The Gold and Diamond Source, are “one” of the top inspirational leaders in the Bay Area. Their business model is enviable and their devotion to our community and to those less fortunate is admirable. “Hands Across the Bay” is their personal philanthropic charity that reaches out to the entire bay area community, produces meaningful results, and invites us all to make someone else’s life a little brighter. A special note: It was the Fall of 2008 when Julie approached me to participate in DANCING WITH THE STARS/TAMPA BAY. I, of course, declined. She was relentless and after reconsidering, I launched a brief dancing career. Twenty-four dance lessons later, I competed with 11 other “momentary stars” and their professional dance partners. Our efforts, under Julie’s leadership, raised a lot of money while we had a great (but somewhat embarrassing) time. Thanks, Julie, for all you do to make Tampa Bay such a wonderful place to live, work, play and DANCE! Enjoy!

CUERVO Y SOBRINOS TORPEDO PIRATA GMT A truly chic flagship timepiece, the Cuervo y Sobrinos Torpedo Pirata GMT blends the brand’s rich Caribbean island history with top-notch Swiss watchmaking prowess. The islands were renowned for the treasure hunters and pirates, as well as explorers, and this watch offers a rebellious yet romantic side that recalls that spirit. The round case shape is meant to emulate a cannon mouth and nautical navigation gauges; the curved lugs with screws recall the prow of a ship. The crown is globe shaped. Powered by an automatic movement, the Torpedo Pirata GMT offers second time zone using 24 hour indication. The 45mm case is crafted of bronze, titanium and brushed steel for a superb look, the sapphire crystal is antireflective and the sapphire caseback allows for viewing of the movement. The watch is finished with a substantial strap in either a black alligator or ostrich. Retail: $6,500.

AUDEMARS PIGUET ROYAL OAK PERPETUAL CALENDAR Created in 18-karat yellow gold for a sublime look and accented with a blue Grande Tapisserie decorated dial, this Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar watch offers day, date, month, astronomical moon, week of the year (on the dial’s outer chapter ring), leap year indication and more. This classic compilation, housed in a 41mm case that is water resistant to 20 meters, is powered by the new self-winding caliber 5134 – built in house by Audemars Piguet. The 374-part movement offers 40 hours of power reserve. Retail: $95,700. 22 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

PERRELET TURBINE PILOT Known for its pioneering spirit, Perrelet unveils a new breed of aviation watch in the Turbine Pilot. The intriguing watch offers the brand’s signature Turbine concept (of 12 fastspinning titanium turbine blades that open and close to reveal the motif below the dial) with the circular aviation slide rule. Powered by the mechanical automatic P-331 caliber, developed and produced in-house, the Turbine Pilot is offered in four different 48mm models. This version is crafted in stainless steel black PVD with bi-directional rotating dial ring that is activated via the crown at 3:00. The time is set with an integrated crown at 9:00. The watch features luminescent hour-markers and four Arabic numerals meticulously applied on the sapphire dial, above the Turbine. Beneath the dial, the yellow and black background is reminiscent of the runway lines. Retail: $5,790.

HUBLOT BIG BANG ITALIA INDEPENDENT CAMOUFLAGE The second creation in a partnership between Hublot and Italia Independent (Italian luxury fashion band co-founded by Lapo Elkann), this Big Bang Unico Italia Independent watch fuses unusual materials and style in a rebellious watch designed for heroes of pacifism. The camouflage pattern on the case and bezel are achieved via carbon fiber infused with Texalium® for textured appeal. Offered in limited editions in blue, green or black, the chronograph watch displays the peace symbol at 9:00. At 45mm, the watch is offered with the brand’s “One Click” interchangeable bracelet system. A skeletonized HUB 1242 in-house-made automatic flyback chronograph movement powers it. Retail: $29,400. www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 23

BY SHARON FEKETE

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CRYOTHERAPY? I was intrigued by the bold green and blue building going up in the neighborhood and watched intently as it was built. I noticed the oddly spelled and repeatedly mispronounced sign, ‘FOGGIARE, Body Sculpting Institute.’ My first thought was, how do you pronounce that, and second was what IS it? It’s pronounced (insert beautiful Italian accent) ‘Foe-Jar-Ray’ which means, to shape or mold.

There is a lot to uncover about Foggiare but what stood out immediately was Cryotherapy had arrived in Pinellas County. I had only read about this fascinating chamber of subzero temperatures, so what is it doing here in Largo? It comes from the Greek word, “krous,” which means “cold” or “frost” and we all know what therapy means! Cryotherapy is not new to the market, it was first used in Japan to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It is still used today to relieve pain from inflammatory “... diseases, injuries, and other symptoms.

It comes from the Greek word, “krous,” which means “cold” or I had done my research and now it was my turn to “frost” and we all ‘cryo dip.’ Fair warning…..when you are about to go into a freezing chamber, naked, with only socks and know what therapy gloves, anxiety will inevitably enter the mind. I strategically means!” dragged my husband along to distract me with conversation while the clock ticked off three minutes and reached 240 degrees below zero. I took the advice of the expert staff to move around and think happy thoughts until it was over. Before I knew it, three minutes whizzed by and I jumped out of the cold box completely energized! The minimal pain I had in my neck and back subsided and I was now ready to take on the world! With continued sessions I have consistently felt euphoric and the pain has yet to return.

The Cryosauna used at Foggiare not only helps with pain management, it compliments your recommended program of weight loss, burns calories, and reduces cellulite. Elite athletes and celebrities such as Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston and more incorporate this modality into their wellness lifestyle. As we know and evidence has proven time and time again, there is no magic solution for weight loss or one answer to pain. Hence why Foggiare offers other complimentary services to aid in the body sculpting process. To learn more about Cryotherapy visit Foggiare at www.foggiareinstitute.com 28 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

TRADEWINDS RESORT, WHERE A VISIT CREATES TRADITION

TradeWind Island Resort, your family’s memories will be an echo of summer fun...

36 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

BY KATHIE ANDERSON How nice to live in an area where we have a plethora of vacation options, and one that stands out as a true, local, favorite vacation spot is less than an hour for most Tampa Bay residents. There is no need to waste your time on a long flight or road trip, take the extra time and invest it in what counts, quality family time relaxing, exploring and experiencing the iconic TradeWinds Island Resorts. The resort is made up of two beach resorts located directly on the sun drenched, white sand beaches bordering the Gulf of Mexico. The Guy Harvey Outpost and TradeWinds Beach Resort are spread over a 25 acre oasis that will be your home away from home, even if just for a while. From the moment you arrive, you will find a true sense of nostalgia in the air, and a staff that employs a consistent, tireless effort to ensure that your stay will be everything you imagined. When it comes to dining choices, you can enjoy a different venue each day and night. For beach and poolside dining, there is the Flying Bridge Beach Bar, you have a choice of inside or outside dining, and if you need to kick your feet up for awhile, there are a few tempting hammocks a few steps away. For a truly memorable dining experience, the RumFish Grill will have you in “awe” from the moment you walk inside. The 1300 gallon saltwater tank is filled with a massive collection of colorful reef fish and was built by Wayde King and Brett Raymer, stars of Animal Planet’s show, “Tanked.” If it is sand in your toes and a dip in the ocean you desire, you will find the beach cabanas are a great place to settle. The cabanas offer easy access to the pools and Salty’s Tiki Bar, where the signature drink is the Bloody Mary, topped with two olives, lime wedge, and a pickled green bean, absolute perfection! The High Tide Slide is a landmark and at three stories high, it dominates the fun factor. There are three 200 ft long shoots for you to experience as many times as you can handle for your entire stay. When night falls and its time to wind down, there is no other place to be than the Guy Harvey Outpost as a family, surrounding a nice fire, and indulging in s’mores, the perfect ending to the perfect day. And tomorrow the adventure continues because fun is always a step away from anywhere you happen to be at TradeWinds Resort So when you have an opportunity to experience the TradeWind Island Resort, your family’s memories will be an echo of summer fun and the desire to make it a family tradition that is carried on for years and maybe, just maybe, generations.

TRAVEL The oceanfront Cloister Ocean Residences are located at Sea Island, a coastal Georgia resort island with five miles of private, pristine beach on the Atlantic Ocean. This private oceanfront community on a gated island offers residents a deeded quarter ownership and the pampered Sea Island lifestyle one week every month in their own luxuriously furnished one, two, or three bedroom residence. The 22 fully furnished and equipped residences range from 1,104 to 3,102 square feet. There are 88 total ownerships and many have been sold, leaving only a limited number that range in cost from $375,000 to $1.1 million. Each of the residences were refurbished this past Spring along with most of the public spaces. The new interiors are designed to lighten and brighten in a seaside motif while retaining the elegance of the signature Addison Mizner Mediterranean design seen throughout the island. In addition, a new oceanfront infinity-edge pool pavilion was unveiled this year. Randy Burgess, Project Director for The Cloister Ocean Residences, said current owners and potential buyers have been impressed with the enhancements. “Demand for The Cloister Ocean Residences has increased this year and we attribute much of that to the upgrades made at both The Cloister Ocean Residences and at The Cloister.” In response to strong demand, the hotel, located adjacent to the Residences on Sea Island, added 63 new rooms, a 5,000-square-foot ballroom and an additional pool. Owners are eligible to apply for full membership in the Sea Island Club and initial membership fees are waived for purchasers (currently valued at $100,000). Members enjoy privileged access and discounts on a host of services and activities. Deeded quarter-ownership, providing 13 weeks annual access— one week each month, each year, with longer arranged stays possible, enabling owners to enjoy Sea Island throughout the year. Over a 4-year period, owners have the opportunity to use every week of the year. Ownerships can be sold, transferred or left as a legacy for generations to come.

ROAD TRIP TO THE WORLD’S LARGEST LOG CABIN 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster

The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster has lost two cylinders, gained a turbocharger and been given a new name. We set off from downtown Toronto, the largest city in Canada and the 4th largest city in North America, behind Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles, to the beauty and tranquility of the world’s largest log cabin in Montebello, Quebec, just over 300 miles northeast of Toronto. CN Tower & Rogers Centre We started our drive at the base of the CN Tower and the Rogers Centre, two iconic Toronto landmarks. The CN Tower is a 1,815 foot communications and observation tower, which, for 34 years since its completion in 1976, was the tallest free-standing structure in the world (it is now the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere, and 3rd tallest in the world). Next to the Tower is the Rogers Centre, formerly known as SkyDome, a 50,000 seat stadium and home of Major League Baseball World Champions, the Toronto Blue Jays. When it opened in 1989, it was the first stadium in the world to have a fully retractable roof and an attached 348-room hotel with 70 rooms overlooking the field. 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster We set out in the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster to see if life with a 4-cylinder turbo, which replaces the naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engine, has helped 44 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

or hindered the driving experience of this entry level open-air Porsche. It turns out that the new name of this car is a very old one. Between 1957 and 1962, Porsche raced the 4-cylinder 718 with great success, including class wins at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958 and 1961.

BY MICHAEL TAYLOR

Because all Boxster’s are mid-engine two-seaters, there are two trunks, one up front and one in the rear. There was plenty of room for our bags and equipment but one does need to pack efficiently. The 718 Boxster is the second least expensive 2-door Porsche behind the 718 Cayman, which starts at $53,900. The base 718 Boxster starts at $56,000. Major options on our car included the 7-speed dual-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK – $3,200) which features both automatic and manual shifting modes. The PDK delivers extremely quick gear changes with virtually no power interruption to the rear wheels. It is not without its balkiness around town at slow speeds but once out on the open roads, it works extremely efficiently. Our car was also equipped with 19” S rims ($1,970), Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM – $1,790), Navigation ($1,730), Bose Surround Sound System ($990), Connect Plus ($1,300), 14-way power sport seats ($2,320) and Premium Package ($1,370). Total MSRP climbed to $72,375 including the $1,050 destination charge.

“The 718 Boxster delivered mile after mile of driving enjoyment.”

One very entertaining aspect of the combination of stop/start and the PDK, is that the engine shuts off while you are still moving. As you approach a stop, the engine shuts down and you roll to a stop in complete silence. I really enjoyed playing with that to see how far I could roll without any power. My take on this is that Porsche makes performance cars intended for performance/enthusiast drivers, who aren’t going to be concerned at all that they are rolling along in silence, which is especially noticeable in a convertible with the top down. Out on the highway from Toronto to our destination which was about 300 miles/five plus hours away, the 718 Boxster delivered mile after mile of driving enjoyment. On the major highways we kept the well-insulated Continued on the next page www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 45

TRAVEL and lined soft-top up, windows closed and air conditioning on (usually sacrilege in my books but I had a passenger whose rights to a civilized environment I had to respect). It was for that reason that we got off of highway 401 at Belleville and headed north on slower, quieter, winding roads. We dropped the top and windows, turned off the A/C and enjoyed the drive. Pushing the Sport button transforms the exhaust note from refined to ruckus, and definitely adds to the driving experience, especially when the top is down at sub-highway speeds (it didn’t seem necessary to have the added noise while cruising on the highway). When you put the gear shifter in drive, and push it to the left into manual mode, you can play with the paddle shifters, or the +/- with the gear shifter, and generate all of the enthusiast sounds you like. On the gas, off the gas, up and down through the gears, you can make this little 2.0 litre horizontally opposed 4-cylinder 300 hp engine entertain, both audibly as well as delivering plenty of performance to the pavement. Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello After an unexpected but fun ferry ride along the way, which took us from the province of Ontario to Quebec, we arrived at the Fairmont Le Château Montebello, the world’s largest log cabin located in the small village of Montebello, Quebec on the picturesque Ottawa River. The hotel was built in 1930 as a private club and constructed in just four months by 3,500 workers using 10,000 hand cut red cedar logs. For 40 years it was the private retreat of the Seigniory Club, whose elite membership included Canadian businessmen and politicians and foreign dignitaries including Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco. It was taken over by Canadian Pacific Hotels in 1970. The hotel was the site of the 1981 G7 summit attended by Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Pierre Trudeau and François Mitterrand, many of whom have hotel rooms named in their honour. In 2007 the North American Leaders Summit was held there with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, US President George W. Bush and Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

Fairmont Le Château Montebello has 211 guestrooms, offers impeccable service, fine dining and wide range of indoor and outdoor activities including horseback riding, a Stanley Thompson designed 18-hole golf course, indoor and outdoor tennis, indoor and outdoor swimming and boating. In the winter, cross-country skiing, skating, curling, dog sledding, tubing and snowmobiling are available. Rather uniquely, guests can arrive at the hotel by car, boat, helicopter or floatplane. We chose to arrive in a nice new shiny black Porsche, and one quick and efficient ferry ride. Conclusion My takeaway from spending one week and logging about a thousand miles on this car is that every time you twist the key with your left hand, a Porsche tradition dating back to its racing heritage at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, you

TRAVEL are embarking on an enjoyable exotic car driving experience. It made all of the right sounds and all of the rights moves, which always seem enhanced with the top down and the wind in your face. Personally I might opt for the manual transmission because it offers balk-free absolute control over the drivetrain, but the PDK is obviously more useful for other drivers and according to Porsche, generates better fuel economy (21 mpg vs 22 mpg with the PDK in the city and 28 mpg vs 30 mpg with the PDK on the highway). If you use this car as a daily commuter in a big city, you probably don’t need to step up to the S model. The rule of thumb is that convertibles spend less time on the race track and more time cruising with the top down. Could the 350 hp S version emit better sounds form the exhaust than the base, maybe, but our base model never felt it was lacking in enthusiasm or entertainment value. One nitpick, the heater switch for the Heated Multifunctioned Steering Wheel ($470 option) is located at the bottom of the steering wheel out of sight behind and between the two spokes. I can’t tell you

how many times I inadvertently turned it on and off during my trip, but it was too many. I’m surprised that Porsche would do anything that would impede your ability to put your hands anywhere on the wheel. I guess over time you would get used to avoiding that part of the steering wheel but that didn’t seem very Porsche like to me. The steering wheel is the central component of driving a car, you should be able to put your hands anywhere on it at any time and not worry about accidentally turning the wheel heater on or off. The 718 Boxster is a great entry to the world of open-air Porsche driving. Do you need to spend the extra $12,400 and go from the base to the S model? Typically more power equals more fun but in this case, I would argue that, on a warm sunny day, any Porsche 718 Boxster will deliver a thoroughly fun and rewarding driving experience.

“The 718 Boxster is a great entry to the world of open-air Porsche driving.”

CREATING EXTRAORDINARY SPACES Hot Trends for Fall 2016

“Easy, comfortable living with a focus on ‘luxe’ minimalism, clean lines and simplicity is the new vibe.”

BY JANAN TALAFER From beautiful area rugs to spacious eat-in kitchens and weatherproof cabinets that look like wood, Tampa Bay’s design experts give readers a peek at the latest new trends for kitchens, baths and outdoor rooms. Minimalist Luxury “Easy, comfortable living with a focus on ‘luxe’ minimalism, clean lines and simplicity is the new vibe,” says John Cannon, president of John Cannon Homes. Natural, organic elements are mixing with contemporary materials, especially wood, steel and glass. Master bathrooms are evolving into high-end spa retreats, where large tubs take center stage, almost like a work of art or sculpture. In the kitchen, distinctive tiles are adding pizzazz, while the traditional triangle design is giving way to the idea of “work zones” where storage and entertainment are the priorities, says Cannon. New trends utilize clean white cabinetry as the base palate of color for the kitchen. To contrast the white cabinetry, bold colors are incorporated into areas such as tile backsplash, countertop selection, and hardware. For added glamour and elegance, highlight the upper tier of kitchen cabinetry with glass doors and LED lighting. Other popular trends include wood floors and contrasting butcher-block island countertops, larger farm sinks and commercial grade appliances for those who love to cook. It’s All About the Comfort Erik Hughes of Don Hughes Construction says kitchens and baths are the two areas where homeowners are willing to make a major investment to get the comfort they want. A recent project Hughes did in Tampa is a good example. An all-white master bath features stunning white statuary quality marble countertops, polished chrome fixtures, marble flooring and marble wall tiles, some of which extend from floor to ceiling. An oversize freestanding tub stands in front of floor-to-ceiling windows. The master bedroom is equally lavish with a morning bar that includes sink,

dishwasher and icemaker, as well as coffee maker and under-the-counter refrigerator. “You don’t even have to go downstairs; just grab a cup of coffee and sit on the patio overlooking the water,” says Hughes. It’s the ultimate Florida lifestyle. Kitchens Are For Gathering The design team at Kitchen Center Plus – Nicole Drew, Tevic Sotomayer and Sherry Wohn – says that spacious eat-in kitchens with big islands continue to be a focal point in the home. It’s the ideal spot for conversation, for the kids to do homework and everyone to gather. Not surprisingly, built-in charging stations for smartphones and other technology are in demand. Also popular are counter-depth appliances for a more streamlined look since they don’t protrude past the cabinets or countertops. Another popular feature says is the Florida “mud room” or “drop zone.” It’s that area where backpacks, briefcases, purses, pet bowls and other items and other clutter can hide behind a closed door. Laura James of Triad Construction agrees that spacious kitchens with large work islands, eat-at bars, large pantries for storage and extra tall cabinets that reach to the ceiling are the hottest new trend. She also seeing a demand for quartz countertops in a variety of colors and patterns, as well as exotic wall tiles in different sizes and materials, including metallic, glass and iridescent. Add cool lighting and artisan pulls on cabinet doors and you have a show-stopping kitchen. The Outdoors Beckons As homes become bigger and lot sizes smaller, homeowners want to make best use of their outdoor area for entertainment, says Bart O’Connell of Landmark Pools. That’s driving the demand for pools with clean angular lines, which allows homeowners to maximize their space and still leave room for extras like fire elements, especially a fire pit with chairs clustered around. Continued on the next page.

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 55

HOME Additional new design trends for pools include decorative, artisan handrails, automation to control everything via smartphone, and travertine pavers rather than brick as the decking material of choice. “Travertine doesn’t discolor or bleach out from the sun and it requires less maintenance than traditional brick pavers,” says O’Connell. As outdoor rooms take on the same luxury as the home’s interior, products that can withstand Florida’s tropical weather are essential. A new line of outdoor cabinetry offered by Olde World Cabinetry is ideal. NatureKast cabinets have the look and feel of beautiful rich wood, but are instead a man-made polymer coated with a weatherproof resin that can handle any environment. The cabinets come in three door styles and 15 finishes, says Nancy Braamse of Olde World Cabinetry. The hardware is rust-proof stainless steel.

Fire it Up What would an outdoor room be without a grill? Doug Driscoll at Just Grillin suggests Alfresco grills for their durability and their commercial restaurant-grade capability, which means they can put out the high heat needed for a perfect sear. Additional features on the Alfresco include a built-in rotisserie, ceramic briquettes for even heating with no hot or cold spots, and a spring-assisted lid to make it easy to open and close. “Rather than eating out, we’re finding there’s a cultural shift and more focus on the quality and freshness of food and spending time with family,” says Driscoll. “Having the right tool to cook with is essential. High-end grills will give you an outstanding restaurant quality steak and help caramelize the food for great taste.”

A Splash of Color Neutral shades or even pale green and blue might be the most popular colors for kitchens, but Jen Kravchuk and Cara Mayes of Decker Ross Interiors recently completed a project for a client who wanted something more out of the ordinary. The two used teal to “light up” the base of the kitchen island and put together a colorful backsplash of accent tiles that extended from the countertop to the ceiling and surrounded the hood over the stove. Directly behind the stove, they used vintage hand-glazed subway tile, but gave it a new twist by turning it to create a herringbone pattern. Even the cabinets have a little something extra. A finish of brushed glaze gives the cabinets more of a “furniture” feel and a texture like linen. The results are creative and fun.

“ High-end grills will give you an outstanding restaurant quality steak and help caramelize the food for great taste”...

Enrique Crespo of Crespo Design Group also likes a bit of color, especially in beautiful custom area rugs – artisan carpets that can really dress up a living room or bedroom. “If you have a lot of colors going on, a custom area rug can really pull it all together and anchor the room,” says Crespo. “I like to match the carpet to the fabrics on the sofa and window treatments, and even the artwork. Area rugs add another layer and texture to define and finish the room.” High-Tech, Smart-Tech We love our technology and Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery finds that innovations like digital readouts to wireless connectivity give homeowners more smart choices than ever before. “More clients are asking for products that function around the way they live, especially in the kitchen, which has become one of the most versatile rooms in the home,” says Marc Hammar, Ferguson Showroom Manager. Ferguson’s many smart-tech options include the Jenn-Air counter-depth French door refrigerator and Electrolux 617 series washer and dryer, as well as the ultrastylish DXV Vibrato 3D printed faucet. Faucets may be overlooked in kitchen and bath designs, but they are “the single most used appliance in the kitchen, just as important as oven and cooktop selection,” says Hammar. The DXV 3D printed faucet is the first commercially available residential faucet with this new technology and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in design. The luxury residential market just keeps evolving with more and more options to make our lives easier and our homes the perfect refuge from the stress and chaos of everyday life.

LOCAL RENOVATION

THE VINOY RENAISSANCE RESORT REVIVAL

“The landmark hotel is ushering in a multi-phased renovation project”...

Photos courtesy of The Vinoy Renaissance Resort

58 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

BY KATHERINE FERRARA Majestically poised along Tampa Bay, the iconic Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club has earned a reputation as the “grand dame” of St. Petersburg’s hotels. For more than 90 years, the historic luxury resort has welcomed notable families, Hollywood stars, presidents and dignitaries from around the globe. When the hotel opened on New Year’s Eve 1925, the guests marveled at the intrinsically carved stone columns, an enormous lobby with hand-painted tile accents, and massive chandeliers suspended from a 25-foot ceiling. Today, guests can still find mementos of those legendary days, such as worn tiles near the check-in desk where storied luminaries once stood. Now the landmark hotel is ushering in a multi-phased renovation project that will infuse a new design renaissance revival into the crown jewel, preserving and celebrating the rich history with some modern enhancements. The transformation aims to cater to today’s sophisticated and affluent travelers who seek a rich, luxurious setting at a resort with a host of modern amenities that enhances their stay. The new design theme, conceptualized by Miriam Torres, is an artistic blend of different palettes of color, mixed with architectural elements inspired by ethnic impressions. While color is visually appealing, texture and lighting also play a key role, explains Torres, principal designer with Parker-Torres Design Inc. of Sudbury, Massachusetts. The Vinoy’s owners awarded the project to Torres, who has been redesigning historic and luxury properties around the globe for 32 years, after seeing her work at the Fairmont Copley hotel in downtown Boston. “We wanted to give a nod to the sophisticated interior and classic view with concepts influenced by Arabic and Moroccan influences. Our inspiration for many of the themes came from the hotel’s opening night in 1925, a fantasy-like setting with massive chandeliers hanging from the vaulted ceilings and bricks at the entranceway,” she says. After spending months researching, reading books about the Vinoy’s history and the family, and spending hours walking around and sitting in the lobby, Torres conceptualized a new interior theme that was fresh and timeless while giving a nod to the sophistication of the 1920’s. “My designs are not what I want; it’s what the property requires to transform and bring back. I go there and become part of it [the hotel] and it helps me visualize the changes,” adds Torres. “It is very unique.” “The new interior design positions the Vinoy as both historic and hip as well as elevates the comfort and sophistication of the resort that our members have come to expect,” says Barbara Readey, General Manager.

The first phase of the project, which began in May, focuses on the amenities at Snell Isle. Enhancements include a redesigned pool with cabanas, fire pits, and outdoor amenities drenched in glamorous white, hunter green and black with a separate kids’ splash pad. The redesigned and expanded clubhouse restaurant will reveal notable touches like columns wrapped in red leather with cross stitching, personal liquor lockers at the back of the room, and light fixtures that resemble golf balls. There will be high-top tables with connectivity outlets for those who need to stay plugged in. Continued on the next page. www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 59

LOCAL RENOVATION The resort’s 18-hole, par 71 golf course and practice facility will also get an update, undergoing drainage and other improvements. Perhaps the most striking design will take place in the men and women’s locker rooms. The men’s side, dressed in slick black and gray with brass accents, will have pocket tables and a long bar. The plush leather chairs are designed to feel luxurious and encourage conversation and mingling. For women, Torres chose a theme of white marble with light shades of aqua, with bridge tables with bamboo influence in the chairs.

Like no other hotel of its kind that has cemented its place among historical hotels, the enhanced vibrancy of the Vinoy will continue to be a destination on its own and compliment the demands for the next generation of travelers.

Like every artist who leaves a lingering impression in their work, Torres leaves an indeclinable footprint in her interior designs. Custom designed luxurious carpet, often awash in a myriad of colors, is her signature look. “I love creating custom carpets because I like to paint and it’s one of the few things I can do that’s like painting. It has been my biggest trademark in all my projects. They are wool, handmade and wall-to-wall carpets, especially for grand rooms. I love doing that – it’s my passion!” says Torres. This phase of the renovation project will continue through early 2017. Further classic elegant enhancements are on the drawing board to make changes to the parking area, fitness center, spa, tennis courts and replacing Alfrescos restaurant with a new dining concept.

ART INSTALLATION MEETS LUXURY RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY What most would describe as a drab, five-story concrete wall facing a nondescript expressway off-ramp struck Ray King as the perfect backdrop for his next large-scale art installation. Today the noted sculptor’s three-dimensional collection of colorful glass disks loosely arranged in a vertical configuration create a distinctive signature element for a new luxury residential community and a new artistic landmark for downtown Tampa. Responding to a call to artists for original art that would be prominently, and publicly, displayed at Aurora, a $67 million apartment complex at 124 S. Morgan St., King submitted both a description and desired location for the concept he wanted to create. Inspiration came to King when he initially checked out the site and literally saw the light. Known worldwide for light responsive sculptures, King observed how natural sunlight swept across the site and watched shadows formed and faded away. Integrating natural illumination was key to the concept that earned King the coveted commission. When light strikes, rainbow-like emanations re-arrange and change as the viewer moves or lighting shifts, according to the artist. “The sun is my partner and Florida has tremendous sunlight,” said the Philadelphia resident responsible for The Aurora Lens. “Essentially this is a lens that interacts with the sun. And this big blank wall was the perfect stage for this installation.” King, who initially worked with stained glass in the 1970s, was awarded a grant that enabled him to travel to England to learn from Patrick Reyntiens, considered to be the leading practitioner of stained glass in that country. “He was a big influence in terms of supporting me and provoking me to do dynamic works. He helped me to trust my ideas, evolve and start new work,” King said. 64 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

BY MARY LOU JANSON Today King’s high-tech structures sculpt light while forms found in nature influence the shapes and patterns he creates.

Miller said King’s approach to bringing site-specific art to communities made him the perfect partner for Aurora.

“Tampa is blessed to be so close to the Gulf of Mexico. I looked at fish in the Gulf. The dot patterns on their scales were an inspiration. The discs appear silvery when it is not sunny. They also resemble aquatic bubbles in the water that relate to the fish,” he said.

“This custom art installation enhances the downtown Tampa skyline, giving our property a signature look that differentiates it from other luxury buildings in the area and embodies the spirit of individuality that we know today’s residents seek.”

The 351-apartment development by Richman Signature Properties now joins other recent high profile projects showcasing King’s handiwork that include Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg as well as galleries, museums and private collections worldwide.

In addition to the one-of-a-kind artwork, Aurora provides amenities that include a 2,400-square-foot fitness center outfitted with TRX equipment and a yoga/spin studio. Upon move-in, residents may utilize complimentary professional services provided by a team of Laurel & Wolf-certified interior designers.

“The art installation at Aurora is a first for Richman Signature Properties and a trend we are certainly considering for other markets,” said Kristin Miller, president of the Richman Group, the seventh largest owner of residential apartments in the U.S. Dedicated to creating distinctive properties that cater to, and support, healthy, creative and social lifestyles,

“Public art on residential buildings is part of a larger trend of emphasizing individuality and bringing condominium-style amenities to rental properties. Richman Signature Properties focuses on creativity outside and in, and that’s why we also grant greater freedom on design and décor choices” Miller added.

BY NANETTE WISER Tampa Bay is all about coastal living and entertaining. So why not take your home style to the sea and go yachting? Whether you buy or charter, your fabulous adventure will be luxe, from sophisticated staterooms to alfresco dining fit for Goldie Hawn (think Overboard!) and Aristotle Onassis. Yachting Fun: Aston Martin, Mercedes Benz and Bugatti all design luxury yachts. But you can set sail in local style on a Tampa Bay-based Lazarra or Bertram yacht. Quality Boats of Tampa Bay can also help you navigate purchasing the yacht of your dream. Sophisticated sailors know that a yacht club provides safe berth and convivial fun, especially those in downtown St. Petersburg, Davis Island, Palma Ceia, Sarasota, Treasure Island and Carlouel yacht clubs. Seaworthy Style Trends: You might think navy/white with red accents dominates yacht interiors, but according to George Hetzel, VP Sales/Marketing for Pursuit Boats, people are looking for the same design they experience in a new home. “They want more modern tones and palettes that are neutral, architecturally sleek interiors and sophisticated furnishings,” he says. “We use a tremendous amount of woods, but in softer colors. White, especially pattern cream and white, are big, with owners bringing color with accessories and art.”

from anywhere on their cruise. Performance has become a huge desire for people now as well, with boats getting bigger and going faster. “People want to get where they are cruising quicker and arrive in style,” says Hetzel. Charter Your Nautical Adventure: Wealthy millennial style is to rent, check it off the bucket list and move on to summering in a Tuscan villa. In any case, you can test the waters by chartering a crewed yacht (complete with captain and chef) from The Moorings from 20 destinations including Florida and Caribbean ports of call. Want to check out the mighty Pacific? In San Diego, savvy sailors book Zolna Yachts (seen here) to vacation in the downtown harbor or cruise to Newport Beach and Catalina. Celebrity Sightings: During the Indy Grand Prix in downtown St. Pete, you’ll see amazing celebrity-owned yachts. These modern classic superyachts are the toys of the rich and famous. Although they come and go, who can forget Tiger Woods’ Privacy, Johnny Depp’s Vajoliroja, Steven Spielberg’s Seven Seas (infinity pool, 15-foot glass wall that converted to a theater) and Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen’s Octopus (complete with two helipads, game room, spa, hot tubs, recording rooms and two submarines)?

What’s big is bringing the outside scenery indoors with a lot more glass. “People want seamless integration of the outdoor entertaining space and galley/dining area, connected by two huge glass doors that can be opened or closed,” adds Hetzel. Interior designer Anita Unger agrees. “The trends follow the land. Nautical colors are out. Simple elegance, contemporary style and neutral colors are in without being blah, especially if you think you may want to sell the boat down the way or charter it out.” Unger would know. Anita's Interiors, Inc. specializes in custom interior design, styling and space planning for yachts, private residences and aircraft. She’s designed interiors for Navy vessel H.H. Hess, Christina and mega yachts from California to Florida for more than 20 years. Unger points out that comfort, safety (padded panels behind the bed) and multiple functionality (TV recedes into the ceiling) comes first. Unger uses hurricane glue to batten down artifacts and a locking system mechanism on artwork so it doesn’t swing. “Of course, you got to be careful not to put nails or screws in the bulkhead,” she admonishes, laughing. Client’s daydreams and collecting passions determine the style and design. “One client liked art deco-inspired furnishings, no wood. So we took the wood out of his seating-in-the-round saloon where he and his friends would drink and watch television and replaced with new veneers. We used a palette of beige, oatmeal and black,” says Unger, who works with her husband Bill in the design business. “One client wanted Marilyn Monroe in the master bathroom and another client, their small Monet.” Other design trends you’ll see are alfresco galleys with icemakers and refrigerators, grills, built in bars and lounge furniture situated by the water’s edge to create a dreamy sun lounge with swim platform. Larger master staterooms and private sundeck areas are all the rage on megayachts. Popular amenities include wine coolers; unique entertainment solutions (disappearing wide screen TVs); storage spaces for water toys (paddleboards, kayaks) and bikes and a home office space that allows the owner to plug in www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 69

THE DISCO HOUSE

“We were able to be adventurous but well balanced and flowing from room to room”...

BY NANETTE WISER Interior designer Enrique Crespo loves a challenge. When one of his favorite clients invited him to transform a mod L.A. pad into a whimsical wonderland, he unleashed a palette of wild sophistication and harmony. Crespo took Nikki DeBartol and Chad Chronister’s posh Beverly Hills hideaway from delightfully decorative to disco-licious. Using colorful Italian fabrics, Pierre Frey draperies, custom-made furniture, color-changing glass tile, imaginative Trove wallpaper undulating with graffiti or floating feathers, inventive Tampa Bay art and avant-garde lighting, Crespo created a West Coast haven for Nikki and family. It was a dream project for Tampa Bay-based Crespo. “I design for people, I don’t have a certain look. I love modern and color and what was great about Nikki is she loves taking chances and shares my sensibilities and passion for modern and transitional design. “ It’s not his first project for Nikki. Crespo worked with the DeBartolo family homes in Tampa as well as designing Sacred Pepper for Nikki’s mom, Candy depicted in duPont REGISTRY’s July/August 2016 issue. Crespo worked with a blank palette of stark white linear architecture, soaring ceilings, natural California lighting pouring in through glass doors and windows. With 6,000 square feet to play with (five bedrooms, 5 and baths) that overlook Beverly Hills and Century City, adding color and personality to what was previously Justin Bieber’s rental home required balance and imagination. “Good design happens when you think outside the box and take a chance. Nikki loves color and we were able to be adventurous but well balanced and flowing from room to room and bringing the indoors and outdoors seamlessly together,” says Crespo. “Nikki picked most of the artwork from Tampa’s CASS (Contemporary Art Space & Studio), so we wanted to make sure we integrated the art’s colors into each room’s drapes, fabrics, furniture and wall treatments.” Continued on the next page.

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 73

HOME Art Rules: Crespo’s design flowed from the pop art as a focal point. “Nikki has always been interested in contemporary art pieces, particularly art that represents the new contemporary movement. Many artists that appeal to her are icons of the graffiti and street art scene. You can see by the images of the house, there is a cohesive theme, from the decor to the artwork. Her collection displays a variety of artists, emerging to establishment,” says Cassie Greatens, owner of CASS. The Beverly Hills home has a local connection. Two of the artists (Tesone, Bask) currently live in Tampa Bay, and Mark Oliver grew up here and graduated from USF with a degree in sculpture. The CASS art posse (including acclaimed Mr. Brainwash’s Life Is Beautiful neon tease and living room wall mural) portray a bicoastal mish mash of brash street art and murals that are all the rage now in downtown St. Pete and Grand Central’s mural explosion. Crespo’s goal was to juxtapose sophisticated serenity with street art. “When you walk around the house, we wanted to make sure there was nothing jarring about the design despite the vibrant colors. I want guests who come here to feel like they have embarked on an adventure where you never know what you are going to see around the corner,” says the designer. Artistic elegance mixes with quirky murals. A custom-made waterfall of glass chandelier, a Laguna Beach artist’s sea-glass like hand-blown glass on a curved wall and a minimal Aphrodite sculpture provide a polished “wow” factor. Crespo discovered an organic contemporary twisted vine wooden sculpture at La Cienaga’s Design Quarter, transforming a hallway into a Zen destination. Next to Aphrodite is an exquisite custom carpet from Nepal in blue with yellow splashed and a lighting installation that changes color, mood lighting that is all hip high tech, making for a dramatic space.

But it’s the foyer from the main door to the backyard that is the jaw-dropping show stopper. The spiral glass Space Rainbow dangling from the ceiling matches the colors in the custom made rug and French console topped with Calla lilies in tall glass vales Mod Mood: From the powder room’s graffiti wallpaper to the living room’s floating acrylic bar, the unexpected and beautiful is the catch of the day. With a motif of sky, sand and ocean colors, the shimmering turquoise of the pool is mirrored in the living room sofa, the modern bar stools and accented by tangerine orange and sunny yellow accents, even acrylic orange bowls by Alexandra Von Furstenberg, Diane’s former daughter-in-law. With towering glass windows looking out on the verandah’s pool, hot tub and waterfall feature, Crespo created an outdoor living space with a big sectional for entertaining, a dining area and lounge chairs in similar colors to the interior accented by gray Missoni pillows and turquoise umbrellas. Not Your Grandmother’s Wallpaper: Wallpaper as art is a huge part of this home’s magic. “Wallpaper adds a layer of texture you can’t get through painting, adding visual interest,” says Crespo. “A good example is the Powder Room’s Trove graffiti wallpaper which gives this party house a whimsical, and colorful look.” Illuminated by sparkling Murano glass beads, a glass vessel sink and a matte silver cabinetry finish, this bathroom is a Studio 54 wannabe. Another guest bathroom features Trove blue wallpaper with images of falling angel’s wings caught in fishing line, a seaworthy motif played out in some of the house’s Sharknado-inspired artwork. Continued on the page 76.

HOME The entertainment room uses wallpaper in a different way to create a home theater environment with a wavy underwater feel. “This wallpaper was made in Italy and darkens the room. It’s flowing colors complement the curved flat screen TV,” says Crespo. Illuminated by Isaac Mizrahi’s sculptural white lighting sculpture, a navy sofa (Restoration Hardware) and an Italian rounded stack coffee table accented by a Von Furstenberg orange acrylic bowl, the cool cozy vibe is perfect for kibitzing or watching Saturday Night Fever. Sleep Style: Indigo and baby blue tones create an ocean them for her son’s bedroom from walls to draperies, complete with bunk beds, and a blue and white pebble patterned custom rug. A retro egg-shaped white “Mork and Mindy” chair with coral red color cushion insets creates another surprise in the kids’ room to mirror the art. The other four bedrooms, some with inset fireplaces and flat screen televisions, showcase both the art and dramatic custom mural wallpaper. In the master bedroom, the Trove “Falling Feathers wallpaper, white Knoll chair, glass desk and custom-designed rug mirroring the drapery and wallpaper colors keeps the room very light, very sculptural. Entertaining In Style: In addition to the al fresco havens, the kitchen/dining and living rooms are the heart of the home. In the svelte kitchen/dining area, Pierre Frey’s graffiti wallpaper inspired Crespo for the house’s palette. The sleek Cosina glass dining room table and sophisticated cream-colored Italian chairs host fabulous dinner parties while casual lunches can be enjoyed in the kitchen while sitting on modern acrylic stools, illuminated by the Foscarini white sculptural light fixture. The living room is equally inviting, with a circular Roche Bobois sofa, round rug and Restoration Hardware chandelier to soften the house’s angular architecture. The pillows and draperies are all Missoni, and the sliding glass doors stack all the way open so the outside becomes a natural part of the interior space. A gorgeous white bar with a glass countertop and with bright turquoise bar stools ups the fun factor. At the back of the bar, acrylic boxes hang on the colorchanging glass tiles, transforming the liquor bottles into vibrant sculptures. The Big Bang: Crespo loves the fluid sculptural feel of the home. By defining the pristine white architecture with pops of color (drapery, art, wallpaper, rugs) and the blue and yellow palette Nikki wanted, Crespo disrupted everyone’s expectations. “In California, everything is grey and light—tan and taupe. But when people, even the contractors, walked into this house, they were blown away.

Artist Unleashed Nikki collects art like snowflakes, each one a unique conversational piece for her homes in Tampa and Beverly Hills. At The Disco House, CASS featured innovative artists including Hijack (Bleeding Heart), Hueman (Next Afternoon), James Verbicky (Vasina), Retina (Untitled), Tatiana Suarez (Nadi), Tristan Eaton ( Goodnight), Brent Estabrook (Unthink Everything), Derek Gores (Lady Danger, Mission Control, Air Scream, Frequency Flyer) and Sharktoof (Nature's Dandelion, Nature’s Setting Sun) and Brainwash (Not Guilty). Perhaps one of the most intriguing pieces is Space Rainbow by Mark Joseph Oliver and Casey Johnson. Oliver and Johnson wanted to created an exciting, intriguing artwork as a celebration of the physical space it inhabits in Nikki's home, as well as a far-off space where only the sound of rocket ships can be heard. NO LIMITS. Dual sport tires, a high exhaust system, and a relaxed, upright riding position help the Scrambler keep riding where the pavement ends. The 19-inch front wheel, the analog tachometer, a purist steel tank in monolith metallic matte and other unique details turn the Scrambler into a high-quality classic. CULINARY MASTERS

ROOTS & WINGS Meet IL Ritorno's Owner and Executive Chef David Benstock When David Benstock started busing tables at 14 at an Italian restaurant on Indian Rocks Beach, he had no idea that part-time job would turn into a full-time passion. While attending Florida State University, Benstock found his kitchen gig in a stir-fry restaurant was so fun that college classes took a backseat. In 2014, after a whirlwind culinary adventure, Benstock came back to his hometown to open IL Ritorno in downtown St. Pete. We caught up with Benstock to find out about his journey, his food philosophy and so much more. So what did you do after you decided food was your passion? “I went to Johnson & Wales in Colorado to start this new life and really focus on cooking. Then, I got the opportunity to work in Vale at the RitzCarlton for four years, and helped open Spago, Wolfgang Punk’s fine-dining restaurant. Then, I went to New York for two years, spent six months in Italy, two months in Spain, a month in San Francisco and another three years in Miami. And I realized I can travel anywhere in the world and cook, and that’s pretty amazing.”

“I’m always cooking, always surrounded by food. It’s a way of life.”

So why St. Pete? “I was born and raised in St. Pete. It’s always been a dream of mine to open a restaurant and I wanted to move back. About four or five years ago, I came back to visit and fell back in love with what downtown had become. It’s really cool to see the town growing the way it is. It’s so nice to see good food being appreciated here.” What is your food philosophy? “I keep it simple. A lot of chefs get to into recreating the wheel or creating something with 30 million flavors. I like to keep it to four or five components in a dish and let those speak for themselves.” What dish do you make at home most often? “Pasta, because that’s one of my wife’s favorites and also a lot of chicken wings. My life has been surrounded by food in every way, whether I’m cooking meals for my son for the week or have some buddies over. On vacation, I’m always cooking, always surrounded by food. It’s a way of life.” Where do you get your passion from? “I’d say it’s a little different now than earlier in my career. It used to be that the passion came from the people above me, ahead of me, better than me and what they were doing and what the possibilities were — and how cooking is something you can never learn everything about. I will always keep learning. Now my passion comes from my kids. They kind of give me that mindset to keep pushing and making them proud.”

BY MELINDA TAM ORLANDO How would you describe your food? “Italian food: We use the classic flavor combinations but we do our own way with it. You are never going to see spaghetti and meatballs on our menu. We keep it light: fresh, simple and creative.”

Sweet Corn Agnolotti Recipe

What are the most popular dishes at IL Ritorno? The Hamachi Crudo is one with smoked tomato water, basil aioli, baby zucchini and watermelon radish. The charred Octopus Puttanesca is another favorite. You’re involved in giving back to charity. Why is that important for you to support professionally? “When I was younger, I didn’t have money to give to any charity, but since we’ve opened the restaurant, I’ve been able to use that to bring in money to charities that need support. Over the last two years, I’ve done dinners to support the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. Two of my uncles have Crohn’s and my sister and nephew have Colitis so it’s really important to me. I’ve also hosted private dinners to support All Children’s Hospital and other things as well.” What do you want to be known for in Tampa Bay? “Probably as a chef that always trying to push to create new items and always trying to push to stay with the trend. I love collaborating with a lot of chefs and working to help create a successful community. That’s what St. Pete is all about.”

AN OCEANIC TASTE ADVENTURE Discover this gem in Oldsmar’s downtown district.

Photos courtesy of Ed Barry

Quaint Oldsmar, situated between the bustling cities of Clearwater and Tampa, has a small-town feel that draws locals for its city celebrations, Old Florida folks and just honest-to-goodness charm. I can say that because I am an Oldsmar resident, and those qualities make me fall in love with Oldsmar over and over again.

“This is really a social event, a great time to meet people or reconnect with old friends. Plus, you can try wines from all over the world,” Pastis says. If you can’t make it out on a Wednesday evening, City Fish has you covered with another special event: Sunday brunch buffet. This is an event not only for your taste buds but for your eyes as well with more than 110 items.

But there’s more to Oldsmar than just that: We are also a culinary destination. Take a look at City Fish Seafood Grill & Chop House, found right off Tampa Road in the middle of Oldsmar's downtown district.

“Our Sunday brunch is pretty massive,” Pastis explains. “And I take great pride in our assortment.” Choose selections from all tasty stations such as: Mimosas, sangria, mojitos and make-your-own bloody mary bar, omelet, carving, seafood on ice, pasta and dessert stations along with breakfast and lunch items. If you can’t make it on Sunday, patrons can get some made-to-order brunch items on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Plus, the establishment also offers its same favorites from the dinner menu for lunchtime patrons. Some options even offer smaller portions for speed and ease to accommodate lunch time crunches.

It’s been a decade since City Fish opened its doors, and it’s still as popular as ever. City Fish serves the Tampa area’s finest seafood and sushi in a unique, tropical ambiance. Every dish is created using only the freshest, finest ingredients. In fact, you’ll find seafood items on City Fish’s constantly changing market fresh menu that you won’t find anywhere else: Wahoo, thresher shark, mutton snapper, blue crab claws and so much more. Executive Chef and General Manager Nicholas Pastis elaborates, “We always serve the freshest fish, and I have the flexibility to change the menu two or three times a week depending on what’s the freshest.” His coastal regional-style menu isn’t the only perk drawing a crowd. City Fish recently started “Wine Down Wednesdays,” hosted every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a $25 flat rate for bottomless wine and appetizers. Pastis typically pours 9-14 different styles of wine for tasting and complements that with an appetizer buffet and DJ-style music. 96 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Overall, Pastis is excited to be part of the growth of Oldsmar, having held culinary positions with Walt Disney World and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino among others before coming to CityFish this past January. “Oldsmar, like any other town, as it grows, it attracts different demographics to come in. Now, we are seeing more foodies and wine aficionados. And as Oldsmar grows, I truly believe more and more people will be looking for things that no one else has on their menus. For us, seafood is our number one item with everything else secondary. After all, our name is “CityFish.” 4022 Tampa Rd, Oldsmar | 813-814-5800 | cityfishgrill.com.

LINKING HANDS ACROSS THE BAY They’re one of Tampa Bay’s most recognizable and charismatic couples, often spotted in television commercials touting sparkling jewels. Julie and Steve Weintraub may have made selling diamonds a family affair, but philanthropy is at the heart of this dynamic duo.

Together as owners – and the faces - behind the Gold & Diamond Source, Steve manages the day-to-day operations while Julie serves as Vice President, both working alongside their three sons and Steve’s sister in the showroom. If running the nation’s fastest growing jewelry store in the country and launching a new jewelry line on HSN this December wasn’t hectic enough, the couple also raises five children, ranging in age from 16 to 31. The Weintraubs, married since 2004, are united in business and creating a legacy of giving back to the community. In 2010, Julie founded Hands Across the Bay (HATB), a local non-profit with a mission of identifying and preventing equality and social issues, including bullying, suicide, teen dating violence, and animal abuse throughout Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Manatee counties. “We are giving a hand up to people. If someone is in need of help through no fault of their own, trying to do their best in a bad situation, we can help them in various ways. Often, more than they originally requested. Our goal is to make them self-sufficient, says Julie.

Fiercely protective of victims receiving justice against their abusers, Julie admits that her unwavering devotion and passion for helping others does take an extreme emotional toll on her. She remembers every victim, every gruesome detail of the horrific story, often displayed in graphic detail during trial proceedings. She appears in court to make sure the criminal justice system doesn’t inflict more traumas to victims or families by handing down lenient sentences.

HATB’s largest initiative focuses on domestic violence awareness and prevention in area high schools, pointing to statistics that 1 in 3 teenagers will suffer some form of abuse. One of those domestic violence victims helped by HATB named Melissa, was stabbed 32 times by an “It’s a frustrating situation when I find that the victims do not ex-boyfriend, now serves as the organization’s Domestic “I want it [the have an advocate in the courtroom. Steve Bunch Sold Hyde Park home in 2016 "The most impressive thing about working with Mike on the sale of our home is that he set reasonable expectations from the start and then exceeded them. He never over-promised to get the job and his input was key in getting our house ready for sale. Throughout the process from going under contract to closing, he kept things moving for us and insulated us from any issues--in short it was nearly a stress free process. His staff was very responsive and professional and Mike personally was always available for our questions. In the end he was able to sell our house for full asking price in 3 days--the result he obtained for us speaks for itself. I would highly recommend him for his practical approach, his sales process and highly professional staff. "
