There’s no denying the recent automotive world trend of luxury sports car brands foraying into high-end performance SUVs. While this trend traces back decades, the current wave of players entering the category proves that the luxury SUV segment is having a major moment. For many drivers, the models now coming to market are the ultimate vehicles, pairing incredible on-road performance with off-road capabilities, everyday practicality, a luxury feel, and usability that no sports car could ever dream to match.

Ferrari, one of the world’s most timeless and exclusive automotive brands, has finally unveiled its answer to the highly competitive luxury performance SUV segment: the Purosangue. While Ferrari’s first SUV may seem like a radical change for the brand, there is no mistaking it for any other marque; designers made sure that the unforgettable and irreplaceable driving experience would be worth the wait and the Ferrari Purosangue price. It is again time to relish the Ferrari brand, but this time, on an entirely new frontier.

The Ferrari Purosangue develops a massive 715 horsepower, coming from its naturally aspirated V12 engine; on top of that, it boasts 528 pound-feet of torque. With an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Purosangue

The Ferrari V12 is one of the most important aspects of the car. In a world that is becoming more environmentally conscious than ever, the V12 engine is quickly disappearing, and that affects brands like Ferrari the most.

Many thought the Purosangue would contain a smaller engine, like a V8 or even a V6 like its 296 GTB stablemate. However, Ferrari stayed true to its most important roots in including the V12, and its high-power output rings true to the marque’s ethos.

Of course, having four doors makes this model a standout among not only the Cavallino Rampantes but other SUVs. The doors themselves are notable, as the rears open from the front. This unique backward opening direction creates an unmistakable visual interest — as if the Purosangue didn’t stand out from the herd enough. Innovation and technologies derived

from fellow high-performance Ferraris, including wheels inspired by the SF90 Stradale and dynamics systems originally used on the Ferrari 296 GTB, further elevate the design. The four-wheel-drive system employs technology from the GTC4Lusso and SF90 Stradale, and the four-wheel-steering system is derived from the 812 Competizione. Four individually adjustable seats, large displays for both the driver and front passenger, and a sound system from Burmester dial up the luxury factor. The front seats even boast a massage function, making for one of, if not the most luxurious offerings from Ferrari yet.

There’s no denying that for Ferrari, the new Purosangue is very different, pushing the boundaries of what many expect from the Prancing Horse brand. However, with its familiar combination of power, practicality, luxury, and style, the Purosangue falls neatly in line with the definition of a Ferrari and proves that a Ferrari can be even more than it ever has been before.

This year’s Monterey Car Week was a big one for Bugatti design director Achim Anscheidt, as he and the French carmaker unveiled the Mistral — the brand’s final W16-powered vehicle.

Anscheidt joined Bugatti in 2004 and has worked closely with all of its VW-era products, from the Veyron all the way through to the Chiron and its many variants. The Mistral, however, is different. It required a clean-sheet design, structural changes, and bespoke elements not shared with other models.

Amid the Car Week hustle and bustle in August, we sat down with Anscheidt to chat about the Mistral, electrification, and which modern Bugatti is his personal favorite. duPont REGISTRY: What was your primary goal when designing the W16 Mistral?

Achim Anscheidt: One of the main targets was certainly to wrap up the great story of the W16 engine. This is the last of its kind celebrating that engine. Stylistically, con-

sidering what that means, we had to assess how it would stand in a customer’s collection next to cars like the Chiron, Divo, La Voiture Noire, Centodieci, and Bolide.

It’s almost the final piece in a collector’s Lego set. dR: Were any parts of your original sketches changed as you moved to the production version?

AA: The car was actually more extreme.

A couple of months ago, we were planning to make it a limited run as a show and display homologation. After we saw customer interest and how much the U.S. market means to us, we opted for worldwide homologation. That meant quite a lot of work for us because it needed to pass rollover, side, front, and rear impact tests.

The result is what we see now. dR: Was the W16 Mistral envisioned as a roadster from the very beginning?

AA: It was. We already have Divo as a car for more lateral acceleration. We already

have Centodieci as an homage. We have La Voiture Noire as a one-off, one-person, one customer, and we have the Bolide, which is the most extreme way to experience the W16 engine. If we did anything else coupewise, it’s just another one of those.

So the roadster gets us out of that zone.

This is the best for a collector to add to their collection. It’s not just another one-off. It’s something that has never existed before.

The “few of ” business is tricky. If you do too many “few of” programs, the “few of” becomes the new normal. dR: What’s your favorite part of the styling?

AA: Aside from the taillight, it’s the translation of the Bugatti line. We’ve never done such a clean Bugatti line as we find it here. It starts at the horseshoe grille and is indirectly translated to the wheel arch. It’s not directly connected, but your eye continues on. We were able to design a new upper part for the car’s mono structure because it is a roadster, and this line has a chance to be so harmonious and clean. because everything transitions neatly. dR: The W16 is a massive engine. How will smaller electrified powertrains affect future proportions and design languages?

AA: A new powertrain will offer opportunities for sure. This is always the most difficult thing. People very often do not know why things look sexy and nice. It is a proportion first. That setup might give us tastier proportions, which we are very happy about.

But we are also very sensitive not to throw Bugatti DNA away just because we can.

Our customers would not appreciate it if the modern-day Bugatti now looked like a Ferrari or a McLaren. We have such an individual, recognizable DNA from all sides that I think it’s sensible to bring this into the next stage of interpretation. dR: Which is your favorite car you’ve designed for Bugatti?

AA: It’s obviously this one. They’re like kids to me. I’ve been responsible for 10 major cars in my career — actually, nine. I’m just

finishing up the 10th, which is the Chiron’s successor. The cars we’ve produced over the last four years are very dear to me. They came in an era when Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann forced engineering to do those “few of” projects.

This is something that never would’ve happened over the years before. When Winkelmann came to our brand, he opened up these possibilities. It’s been fantastic in my old age to have still the chance to work on cars like this. And that’s the goal moving forward, to keep creating these sorts of expressions.

It’s nearly 100 degrees in the California desert at The Thermal Club, just outside Palm Springs, as I ready myself to step into a Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica for the first time. I settle into the bolstered sport seat, adjust the wheel, and lift my eyes to see a matte gray STO ahead — it’s piloted by a racing driver. As I fire up the car, a warning sounds over the radio, reminding me that even R-compound tires get squirmy at these temperatures.

The Huracán STO is one of the most memorable cars I’ve tested, and my first stint in the Tecnica felt like revisiting an old friend. Powered by a 5.2-liter NA V10, the Tecnica delivers 631 horsepower and 417 pound feet of torque, which hammers to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Like the STO, it has standard Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires, a rear-wheel steering system, and carbon-ceramic brakes.

Unlike the STO, however, the Tecnica sports softer springs, more interior options, and Sian-inspired styling. It’s meant to be the sweet spot between the Huracán EVO and its trackready sibling, delivering an experience that is raw but more comfortable around town. On track, it sounds, shifts, and steers like an STO, meaning it’s loud, quick, and precise. Like the rest of the Huracan family, the Tecnica is easy to hustle around at speed, and despite its softer suspension setup, it’s neutral through the corners and stable at triple-digit speeds.

My second stint was much hotter, and the Potenzas were barely clinging on. Retaining neutrality required very calculated steering and throttle inputs. Even the slightest hint of lead-footed driving caused the rear to dance. Lamborghini re-tuned the Tecnica’s drive modes, with Sport now allowing

••• The Tecnica rewards smooth inputs. Get it right, and it is blazingly quick around a track. Its lively rear proved more exciting than terrifying, even in high temperatures.

controlled oversteer while Corsa focuses on setting the best lap times. I switched to the latter as I tried to cling to the STO in front, and the Tecnica settled considerably. It still rotates under power, but clever stability control systems pointed me the right way.

This latest Huracán barely resembles the car that debuted in 2013 and looked much better in the metal than in photos. Its fixed rear wing also helps: Despite a small size, it improves rear downforce by more than 35 percent over a Huracán EVO. The rest of the Tecnica’s styling is sleek and angular. It takes a close look to appreciate its many ducts, intakes, and angled surfaces.

Inside, the Tecnica’s interior largely resembles the STO’s, although new customization options, such as Alcantara door panels, level up the ambiance. Redesigned digital gauge cluster graphics complement the evolution in drive modes and make the Tecnica feel more like a new product.

The Tecnica nails its role as a sweet spot. It delivers STO-level drama behind the wheel while retaining passenger comfort.

While its soft suspension makes it eager to rotate on track, most of these cars will live on public roads, where the benefits far outweigh the losses. The STO remains one of the best cars I’ve ever driven, but the Tecnica is the one I’d want to own.

SWEET VICTORY Max Wins at Suzuka With the rain pouring down at the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix, there was a lengthy stoppage in the race, as drivers couldn’t see their competitors ahead. No matter the vision, nothing stood in the way of Max Verstappen seeing his chance to become a two-time world champion. When he crossed the finish line, Super Max took first place in the race.

However, it wasn’t until points were settled very quickly after the race that Max was crowned champion.
