On The Cover Spencer 70
W
hen you spend as much time fishing the Atlantic Ocean as Captain Paul Spencer, you learn what boats work. At the age of 12, he began working as a mate on offshore fishing boats. At the age of 19, Paul acquired his Captain’s License, turning his love of fishing into a career. He was on boats full time, running charters and becoming a very successful tournament angler. In 1996, Paul wanted to try his own hand at boat building. “I watched North Carolina charter boats evolve, getting faster and better built. I thought I could add to the earlier improvements. I was motivated to build not only a faster boat, but also a better sea boat. I like the strength of coldmolded wooden boats. Water gets real hard as you go faster. You need a strong boat to run fast in the kind of seas we fish. 8
Sometimes we run 100 miles to get to the fish. But just as important to me, I wanted my boat to look good.” It didn’t take long for people to take notice. He had an offer for the first Spencer Yacht before it was even completed, as well as orders for two more. Since the founding of Spencer Yachts in 1996, 77 boats have been completed with 8 currently under construction. This summer Spencer Yachts will be introducing their smallest boat, a 25’ center console, the Spencer Sport. On the opposite end of the spectrum, they are close to completion on an 87’ Mammoth, which is expected to be at the 2011 Fort Lauderdale boat show. It will be the first of it’s kind to be equipped with four 1150hp C18 ACERT Caterpillar marine engines, coupled with four ZF 4,000 POD
drive propulsion packages. “We build any size boat, completely customized to the owner’s desires. This makes building with us an exciting and unique experience. We work with the owner to design 100% of the boat, and truly want the customer to feel that the process was fun from start to vessel completion.“ Spencer Yachts are currently registered up and down the Atlantic, to Texas, Hawaii, Spain, Puerto Rico, Panama and a few Caribbean islands.
