No cars in the history of duPont REGISTRY’s publication have ever embodied the spirit of this magazine more than Bugatti’s hyper cars of the modern era. Starting with the Veyron in 2005 and continuing with the soon-to-be sunsetted Chiron that debuted in 2016, these two special vehicles have spawned many special editions and set many world records during their time in the spotlight.

One thing about them, however, has remained constant: their quad-turbo W16 engine. In the original Veyron, this 16-cylinder, 8.0-liter mill produced 987 horsepower. Now, near the end of its run, it makes 1,577 hp. The final resting place of the legendary W16 is this month’s cover car, the Bugatti Mistral, which will be the last road-going Bugatti ever to feature this engine of engines.

The Mistral is a car worthy of this honor. It pays tribute to the winds from southern France for which it’s named by opening up to the elements. The roofless shape is a spiritual successor to the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport and takes inspiration from the gorgeous 1934 Type 57 Roadster Grand Raid.

From its unique front end with quad-stacked LED headlights that help reduce drag to its X-themed taillights that aid cooling, the Mistral is all business. While not o cial, it is likely one of the fastest, if not the fastest, open-top production vehicles in the world and maybe of all time.

Of course, this sort of capability, import, and exclusivity comes with an equally eye-popping price tag: €5,000,000. And if you’re a regular reader of dR, you won’t be surprised to learn that all 99 of its production slots are spoken for. That’s okay, though, as you and I both know we’ll see a Mistral for sale on these pages soon enough.

How about something more attainable for this issue’s second course? Join us on page 30 for our driving evaluation of the Ferrari Roma, a surprisingly divisive member of Enzo’s corral. Is it really an “entry level” car just because it’s the least expensive Ferrari? Or is each part of it infused with as much essence of Italian supercar as the rest of the brand’s lineup?

with adventure in mind, the W16 Mistral marries freedom and speed with a curvaceous exterior that appears windblown — and seemingly in motion — even when it’s at a standstill.

The legendary W16 engine, known for its multiple turbochargers, insane power, and inclusion among the world’s most famous hypercars, bids farewell — but in a most magnificent way. Introducing the new Bugatti W16 Mistral, a roadster that will end an era for the French automaker.

“For the final road-going appearance of Bugatti’s legendary W16 engine, we knew we had to create a roadster,” says Mate Rimac, Bugatti Rimac CEO. “Well over 40 percent of all Bugatti vehicles ever created have been open-top in design, establishing a long lineage of performance icons that — to this day — are revered the world over.”

Inspiration for the W16 Mistral came from the legendary 1934 Bugatti Type 57 Roadster Grand Raid. In fact, many of the standout design cues and features of the model are modern interpretations of those found on the Grand Raid. This includes the V-shaped windscreen, roof-mounted engine air scoops, and even the debut livery.

To make the roadster design of the W16 Mistral and have it be a true open-top model, Bugatti did more than simply cut o the top of an existing monocoque. Instead, the designers and engineers at Bugatti reengineered and reshaped the monocoque so that the silhouette could be as stylish as they intended without compromising the overall performance and rigidity.

At the front of the W16 Mistral stares a face that you may find familiar. For the headlights, Bugatti borrowed the vertical layout of the individual lights from the Divo and La Voiture Noire. Unlike those models, the W16 Mistral features a four-light setup that nods to the four-wheel-drive system and four turbochargers. For the taillight, Bugatti went with an “X” design that’s similar to the Divo. This taillight delivers more than good looks, as it also allows the side oil coolers to vent through ducts found in the negative space between the X beams.

While the exterior design is undoubtedly beautiful, so is its powertrain. At the rear, the famous quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine produces an astonishing 1,578 horsepower. This is the same engine found in the Chiron Super Sport 300+, a hypercar that reached a world-record top speed of 304.773 mph in 2019. Naturally,

Bugatti is set on breaking another record with the W16 Mistral, as they intend to make it the fastest roadster in the world.

To control that engine, the driver will sit in an interior that is as luxurious as you’d expect from Bugatti. Inside the cabin, the driver and passenger will have new door panels with woven leather, as well as milled titanium and aluminum components. An aluminum gear shifter features wood with an amber insert displaying the famous “Dancing Elephant” sculpture of Rembrandt Bugatti.

If you’d like to sit in the driver’s seat of your own Bugatti W16 Mistral, you will have to wait a bit for one to hit the market, as all 99 examples of the production run have been sold. Each came with a price of just over $5 million.

Thoughtful details and adornments add an artisan feel throughout this limited-edition roadster. Among them: Rembrandt Bugatti’s “Dancing Elephant” takes up residence in the gear shifter.

There’s nothing quite like the buzz and liveliness of a collector car auction. Between the crowds and the intangible excitement of seeing — and, for bidders, possibly owning — the cars that cross the block, the auction venues brim with energy.

Jumpstarting the 2023 auction calendar, many of the world’s premier automotive auction houses arrived in Arizona, as the western state is one of the world’s capitals for such events. Top highlights from these recent sales come from RM Sotheby’s, BarrettJackson, and Bonhams. The cars that sold, and their prices, are like strikes of lightning, and these incredible gatherings are proof that when it comes to their passion for amazing automobiles, many car collectors are willing to put their money where their mouth is in a greater sense than we’ve seen before.

RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale, held at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, amassed an amazing $44 million in total sales. The leader, contributing $4,075,000, was the world’s only Ferrari LaFerrari finished in Blu Elettrico with a Crema leather interior. The priciest bids went to a mixture of modern, retro, and classic icons, including $3,140,000 for a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray ZL-1 Convertible, the most expensive C3 Corvette ever sold, examples of the Porsche 959, a Ferrari F12tdf, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, a Lamborghini Miura SV, and a

Porsche Carrera GT. Meanwhile, Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction achieved more than $190.6 million in sales. Ferrari also took the top spot here, with a 1989 Ferrari F40 commanding $2,750,000. Other highlights included the sale of a Porsche Carrera GT for just under $1.6 million, and the sale of two Ford GTs, a 2020 Carbon Series, and a 2019 Lightweight Carbon Series (the Carbon Series each went for $1.32 million). Bidders recognized the timeless collectability in finely engineered supercars, no matter their age. Bonhams held its Scottsdale sale at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. Here, the top seller was a historic 111-year-old classic: a 1912 Simplex 50HP 5 Passenger Torpedo Tourer, originally purchased by Harold Vanderbilt for Eleonora Sears. It commanded an incredible $4,845,000. Immediately following it was a car that contrasted starkly, a 2006 Maserati MC12 Corse, selling for $3,811,000. Other highlights from the sale were a 1958 BMW 507 Roadster, a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS, and a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT.

One takeaway from each of these Arizona sales that kicked o the year: historic classics are no longer the only high rollers. Cars from all ages and origins are commanding very high prices, and if this pace keeps up, this auction year will be more exciting than ever.

In Arizona, the 2023 auction year starts with a bang.

It’s 10 a.m. on a Friday, and a white transport truck squeals to a halt outside my front door. It tilts, and out rolls a sleek gray coupe, a car seemingly plucked out of the 1960s. While my neighbors have gotten used to all sorts of crazy machines arriving at odd hours, this one is di erent. I can see eyeballs peering through blinds and rubbernecking as drivers pass by. The Ferrari Roma is not just another supercar. Its stellar looks command attention without relying on performance stats or noise. It’s achingly gorgeous.

The Roma is designed for the person who thinks “they just don’t make them like they used to.” Built as an homage to the glitz and glamor of 1950s and ’60s Rome, this Prancing Horse represents a new styling direction for the brand. Instead of focusing on the future like the automaker’s latest electrified cars, this model drew inspiration from some of Ferrari’s greatest hits, like the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso and 250 GT 2+2.

Don’t for a second think that the Roma is all flash and no fire. With a snarling twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 under its long hood, it’s anything but slow. It produces 612 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque, which — thanks to a snappy dual-clutch transmission and a rear-drive layout — delivers a level of brutality and pace you wouldn’t expect from such an elegant machine.

Ferrari claims a 3,461-pound curb weight, but you’d be hardpressed to tell in the bends. With sticky Michelin tires and a front-mid-engine layout pushing its center of mass inward, the Roma’s front end is properly agile. It’s eager to turn in and rewarding to hustle up a back road. Despite being advertised as

a GT, I can’t confidently claim you’d be quicker up a canyon road in an F8 Tributo. The Roma is a proper athlete in its own right.

The Roma is as stunning inside as it is out. With a driverfocused cabin and few physical buttons, it prioritizes form over function. It’s the Roma’s tech that lets it down, however; anyone who remembers midcentury Rome would likely clash with this level of modernity. While the haptic buttons are beautiful, they lack responsiveness. The same goes for the central infotainment screen, which despite o ering all of the features you’d expect, remains challenging to operate.

Technological shortcomings aside, the Roma wins with its personality. It’s quick, agile, and engaging to drive, making it feel quite like a supercar in spite of its GT aspirations. However, you don’t need to drive a Roma to appreciate it. Its appeal is intergenerational, even to nonenthusiasts. It doesn’t need stats to make its case. One glance is all it takes.

has been professionally racing in Formula 1 since 2010, garnering some solid championship finishes. While he started his career with AT&T Williams, he spent most of his time with the Sahara Force India F1 Team. His best finish with the team saw him reach 9th place, however, it was during 2015 that he would race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of the Porsche Team and place 1st. This showing in another race series proved that Hülkenberg wasn’t in motorsport for money, but simply to race. Shortly after this win, he would sign a contract with the Renault F1 Team and finish 7th in the 2018 season, his best career champshionship standing.

Hülkenberg subbed for Sergio Pérez at Silverstone in 2020, but did not start due to a power unit problem.

AFTER HIS WORST showing since the start of his Formula 1 career in 2019, Hülkenberg found himself without a contract for the 2020 season. This was the start of three seasons as a reserve driver, starting with the BWT Racing Point F1 Team and ending with the Aston Martin team. When I say ended, it’s on purpose, as he signed a contract with the Haas F1 Team for 2023 to become a full-time driver alongside Kevin Magnussen. This move was made possible due to a vacant spot left by the departure of Mick Schumacher. Now, Hülkenberg is back on the starting grid to do what he loves most: race. With three rookies, plenty of shake-ups, and the return of Hülkenberg, the 2023 season is set to be a must watch.

Setting A New Standard Adventures in Luxury

The second is in the motorhome’s rear suspension, as Grech RV takes the standard Sprinter’s leaf spring configuration and adds air suspension as standard on all Strada models. It features a self-leveling design that does an excellent job of balancing stability and ride comfort.

Jumping behind the wheel of the Strada-ion seemed daunting at first. It’s 116-in high, 80-in wide, and 290-in long. However, on the road, it shrinks around you, despite being the largest motorhome Grech RV sells. Deemed one of the most revered and beloved complicated timepieces in the world, chiming watches actually sound the time using a series of gongs and hammers that work in unison for harmonious allure. There are several types, but the most well-known are minute repeaters, activated by a slide or pusher on the side of the case, and sonneries, which traditionally chime every hour without requiring activation, though they are equipped with a silence button.

Minute repeaters chime the hours, quarter hours, and minutes past the quarter-hour using different tones and combinations of tones. Usually, the hours utilize a low-pitched note, then a combination of a low- and high-pitched notes sound the quarter hours, and a high-pitched tone rings out the minutes past the quarter-hour. Similarly, decimal repeaters chime the hours and every 10-minute interval, and five-minute repeaters do the same with five-minute increments.

Chiming watches date back to the clock towers of the 15th century that would strike the hours to let the townspeople know the time. Later, 18th-century chiming clocks were developed for royalty and the wealthy, so they could decipher the time in the dark without rising to light an oil lamp.

Today, chiming watches are among the most difficult watches to build, generally housing hundreds of tiny mechanical parts that all work together to not only track the time, but also to make music of it. The movements inside are a complex labyrinth of gears, wheels, springs, barrels, and other

So, how does a repeater work? Essentially, a tensioning spring arms the repeater when the wearer presses a lever on the case side. It immediately comes to life, sending the exact time information to a series of racks, cams, and levers that activate the hammer(s) to hit the gong(s), wrapped around the periphery of the watch movement. In the past, those gongs were made of metal, as were the hammers, but recently the top watch brands that produce repeaters have been turning to sapphire crystal to create an even purer sound. Easily one of the most challenging feats when it comes to building the movements of these acoustical beauties is getting the sound right. When the hammers hit the gongs, they must have the perfect reverberation to produce the right loudness, pitch, and length of tone. While the shape, material, weight, hardness, and number of hammers and gongs play an important role here, the human ear is also vital. In the end, if the sound doesn’t sound right to the master watchmaker, it goes back to the drawing board.

Because it generally takes a single watchmaker anywhere from 200 to 300 hours to assemble and tune a minute repeater movement, these watches are not only incredibly rare, but also — rightfully so — among the most expensive in the world.

CHIMING TIME

The 39-millimeter Richard Lange Minute Repeater by A. Lange & Söhne was several years in the making as the brand worked to perfect the sound of this 50-piece limited-edition platinum watch. Two di erently tuned gongs can strike 720 sequences. The all-new 415-part movement is manually wound and o ers 72 hours of power reserve. Price on request.

Jaeger-LeCoultre is a master at chiming watches, having designed its first one in 1870 and produced more than 200 chiming watch calibers since. This Master Grande Tradition Caliber 950 features a perpetual calendar with moon phases as well as the repeater. The self-winding movement consists of 585 parts. It is crafted in 18-karat white gold.
