ello to everyone tuning in to our game against Walsall this afternoon. We know that Walsall, like us, will be desperate for a win to avoid being dragged into a situation similar to ourselves. I’ll be asking our players to continue to show the same commitment and effort and hope we produce some moments of quality to win the game. I was pleased we took something from the Mansfield game last weekend because we definitely deserved it. In truth, I thought we were the better team in the second half and we probably should have come away with three points and not one. I do have to give Mansfield credit for their first goal. It was a great strike, from their point of view. But I didn’t see the reaction from the players that I would have liked. I asked the lads who were on the bench to be ready to make an impact when they were called upon, because that was their role in this game, and I thought everyone to a man played well in the second half. I certainly can’t question any of them for their spirit. We finished the stronger team and should have won the game right at the end when George Williams’ header hits the post. Full credit to George for his free kick and great delivery for Lenny’s goal but realistically he has to score the header as well. It was a decent point but in the context of where we are at the moment, we wanted all three. Although we conceded twice, James didn’t have too much to do and on the whole we defended well.

THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO BUILD ON TUESDAY’S RESULT - AND THAT FEELING THE GROUP NOW HAS - AGAINST WALSALL THIS AFTERNOON

I didn’t like to call Barrow a ‘must win’ game because we knew there were 10 games still to come after it, but the message to the players was we needed the victory. It was a very tight game, in difficult conditions, which thankfully we came out of with three points. I was delighted that we got the win thanks to a moment of quality from Luke Spokes. I was really happy for the lads because they have been close to winning in a number of games recently and it hadn’t quite happened for them. Since then, they definitely have had more of a spring in their step around the training ground and that’s been really nice to see. However, the important thing is to build on Tuesday’s result - and that feeling the group now has - against Walsall this afternoon. That is what I will be asking the lads to do. UTM, Paul Hurst

Afternoon all, I hope you are all keeping well. It was nice to write these notes on the back of a fantastic away win on Tuesday night and what has also been a solid few weeks for us! However, there’s no getting away from the fact that we need to win games, and unfortunately, once we arrived back from Barrow, the result doesn’t actually mean anything because we know it’s now all about getting the next three points. Naturally people will look at how the teams around us are getting on, but it’s all about what we do. If we win enough games we truly believe we will be okay.

NATURALLY PEOPLE WILL LOOK AT HOW THE TEAMS AROUND US ARE GETTING ON, BUT IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT WE DO

After today’s game, we don’t have a midweek game next week, which hasn’t been the case for a while! We are at the stage in the season where, for most of the lads, it’s all about rest, recovery, eating right and making sure we are in the position to give everything in the games.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Town fans will certainly remember Luke Spokes’ first goal in professional football. With just 20 minutes left on the clock in Tuesday night’s proverbial ‘six-pointer’ at Barrow, Spokes hit a thunderous left foot shot into the top corner to earn The Mariners a priceless win in Cumbria. It was quite a moment for the 20-year-old midfielder who was making only his 11th appearance as a professional footballer. The Bristolian signed for Town in the summer from Taunton Town, the semi professional outfit who play in the Southern League Premier Division South - three leagues below the National League. The industrious midfielder shone during his short time playing in the Southern Leagues as a teenager. After a year with Mangotsfield United, he moved to Yate Town before a switch to Taunton Town for the second half of the curtailed 2019-20 campaign. After completing his first pre-season as a pro in the summer, Ian Holloway eased in the young midfielder at the beginning of the campaign with appearances in the Football League Trophy before throwing Spokes in for the Lincolnshire derby victory against Scunthorpe United in December - a game you could tell the youngster loved every minute of! Since the turn of the year, he’s made a few appearances from the bench and seemed to have dropped down the pecking order at Blundell Park under Paul Hurst. However, the promising midfielder came on at half-time at Mansfield Town last weekend (along with Welsh international George Williams) and helped The Mariners fight-back to claim a point. Then, in midweek, he played alongside Jay Matete and Danny Rose in a midfield three and scored the winner at Holker Street.

Although Spokes might not have the same experience of many of his Mariners teammates, what he has shown in his first 11 games for the club is that he can pick a pass, stick his foot in when required and has a sweet left foot… just ask the Barrow ‘keeper.

warm welcome today to our visitors from the West Midlands and a special mention to Harry Cockbill who since the start of Covid has been arranging copies of programmes and team sheets for around 20 Walsall supporters aged 75+. We hope your members enjoy “The Mariner” and enjoy the game, but not too much! Of course, the big common link we both share is Alan Buckley who had a very successful career as a player and then manager at Walsall. During his two spells, Alan played 419 league games and scored an amazing 174 goals. After a spell as player-manager, he stopped playing to concentrate on management and developed a great passing team (sounds familiar). In 1984 he famously got to the team to the semi final of the League cup and narrowly lost to Liverpool over two legs. In 1986 he was controversially sacked by incoming new owners of Walsall but their loss was our gain. Alan continued to prove his management credentials at Kettering and when we were in need of a new manager in 1988 we managed to entice him away. The rest, as they say, is history. The result on Tuesday night at Barrow was a huge boost for everyone and the determination and team spirit is there for all to see. It is such a shame that the fans cannot be there to help because there is no doubt we would be making a difference both home and away. Obviously it is the same for all clubs but we genuinely believe it has impacted us more than most. Hopefully the lads can keep the unbeaten run going today, and despite not being there, rest assured the fans are right behind Paul and the team. We know our members and other supporters are keen to understand the situation with the takeover. The takeover panel have been very involved and have asked for communications to be halted while the work goes on hence why things have been very quiet. We understand this work is near completion and there should be news soon. We just need to be a little more patient. A lot of work is going on behind the scenes with the consortium regarding fan engagement and you can expect to see several initiatives over the coming weeks. One initiative we are very keen to launch is the Junior Mariners Club which we have put together with the club. With no fans allowed at the ground, and the club shop and offices closed, we have delayed the launch until the summer. Hopefully things will be much better by then and we can get as many youngsters as possible involved. Getting the next generation “hooked” is absolutely key and we want to do everything we can to make GTFC their number one team, no matter what.

The encounter with the young Stags was a competitive affair with limited chances for both sides. Town did play some good possession football in the opening exchanges and Luis Adlard hit the bar from Josh Smaller’s long-range pass. However, Mansfield took the after finishing off a good counter attack from close range. Town continued to dominate possession but failed to create any clear cut chances and the visitors went in at the break 1-0 ahead. Mansfield doubled their lead after the break - against the run of play - when a deep cross was finished from close range. Town pulled one back through Edwin Essel, who finished coolly, following a good ball from Jamie Bramwell. Town pushed for the equaliser and went close on a couple of occasions from set pieces but Mansfield held out for the win.

On Tuesday morning, a particularly youthful Under 18s squad travelled to West Yorkshire to face Bradford City. Town started the game well and Harry Milner narrowly flashed a chance wide of the target. However, Bradford took the lead when they steered home a cross from close range. Not long afterwards they made it two after a scramble in the box was blasted home. Town dug in and began to get more possession as the game wore on but they struggled to create any real chances. Bradford applied more pressure in the second half and they got a third when a corner wasn’t cleared and the loose ball was smashed home. The Bantams made it 4-0 when a long ball put their striker through on goal and he slotted it past Patrick Boyes. Town did get on the scoresheet when a Bradford centre centre back looped a header over his own keeper but it proved to be little consolation for Neil Woods’ side. The Grimsby Town U19 shadow scholarship squad is a brand new team developed by GTSET and Franklin College Sixth Form, based at Blundell Park. The course is aimed at talented 16-year-old players who are looking for a career in the game, are aiming to study sport at university or are looking for a job in the sports industry. The scholarship is a unique blend of a football experience with a full-time education course.

The 31-year-old centre back joined Walsall at the beginning of last season from Bristol Rovers, where he featured under Darrell Clarke. While at the Gas, he made 43 appearances as Rovers won promotion from League Two in 2018-19 and was a part of the team which boasted the fifth best defensive record in League One prior to joining Walsall. Aylesbury-born Clarke started out with Watford before turning professional at Oxford United, making 36 appearances for the U’s. He spent three years with neighbours Oxford City, winning promotion from the Southern League in 2011, and first linked up with Darrell Clarke at Salisbury in 2012. Part of the Whites’ Conference South promotion-winning team, the versatile defender also played 37 games for Woking before reuniting with Clarke at Bristol Rovers in 2015. After two months out, Clarke is now back and expected to line up in the Saddlers’ defence this afternoon.

Former Republic of Ireland U21 Kinsella has probably been Walsall’s most consistent player this season. The 25-year-old is an all-action midfielder and has made 35 appearances for the Saddlers so far this term. Kinsella joined Walsall at the end age of eight and has progressed through the age groups at the Bescot Stadium over the last 17 years. After being named Apprentice of the Season in 2013-14, he made his first-team debut in a goalless draw with Bradford in August 2014 and then scored his first career goal in a 2-0 victory over Burton the following October. Capped by Republic of Ireland at both U19 and U21 level, he helped Walsall’s Development Squad win the Central League North West Division title and Walsall Senior Cup in 2016-17. The tenacious midfielder was one of the Saddlers’ standout performers in 2018-19, winning the Young Player of the Season award and scooping the Goal of the Season prize for his FA Cup stunner at Sunderland. Last season, he reached his milestone 100th appearance and Kinsella looks set to rack up plenty more for Walsall.

Canadian-born Northern Irish U21 international striker Caolan Lavery is Walsall’s leading goalscorer this season with six in 36 appearances. The 28-year-old moved to the Bescot Stadium at the beginning of last season following a three year spell with Sheffield United. The frontman scored 10 goals for The Saddlers in 2019-20, including one in their 3-1 home defeat to The Mariners back in August 2019. After spells playing in Canada and Northern Ireland and as teenager, Lavery signed for Sheffield Wednesday in 2012. During his four years at Hillsborough, he played 39 times (scoring six) and gained experience on loan at Southend United, Plymouth Argyle, Chesterfield and Portsmouth. In 2016, he turned down a new deal with The Owls to join Steel city rivals United but after a little over a year in the Blades’ first team, Lavery was allowed to join Rotherham United and later Bury on loan. Released by Sheffield United at the end of the 2018-19 season, he moved to the West Midlands and has been a regular for Walsall ever since.

GARY CHILDS

Gary Childs originally earned his ‘tricky winger’ label during a four-year spell with Walsall. Moustachioed-midfielder Gary Childs started his career at West Bromwich Albion where he became an England Youth international. But after struggling to break into the first team at the Hawthorns, he moved to Walsall for a fee of £15,000 in December 1983 and quickly became a regular in Alan Buckley’s side. He was still a teenager when he featured in The Saddler’s memorable League cup campaign during his first season. He scored in the third round against Shrewsbury Town and played in their high-profile victory at Arsenal and the 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the semi-final. Childs was a key member of Buckley’s team which were known for playing some of the most attractive, free-flowing football in the whole country. At the end of the 1986-87 season (after Buckley had been replaced), Childs joined Birmingham City. In his four years with Walsall, he made over 130 appearances and scored 17 goals. After two disappointing seasons with Birmingham, Childs teamed back up with Buckley at the beginning of the 1989-90 season and he made an immediate impact at Blundell Park. His skill and trickery was a big factor in Town achieving back-to-back promotions in 89-90 and 90-91. Working in tandem with left winger Dave Gilbert, the pair totally outclassed defenders and turned The Mariners into one of the most exciting teams in the lower divisions. Childs always seemed to get the best out of the players around him, by playing one-touch, passing football. He linked up intelligently with marauding right back John McDermott, as well as strikers Tony Rees and Neil Woods. On occasions, their intricate link-up play was worth the price of the ticket alone! Childs also possessed a deadly strike and was known for scoring spectacular long-range goals. During the 1995-96 season, he scored a stinging effort against Norwich City and then just a few weeks later a beautiful, dipping volley against Sheffield United. Following Town’s relegation from Division One at the end of 1996-97, Childs dropped into non-league and became player-manager of Wisbech Town before a playing swansong at Boston United where he helped The Pilgrims win promotion to the Conference. After eight years with The Mariners, he played 272 games and scored 28 goals.

Gillow, who a couple of seasons later would become the manager who led the Mariners in 355 games... a club record he held until it was almost doubled by that Walsall product – Alan Buckley!

Starting in the Football League at the same time as ourselves, Walsall was just the seventh team that we met as a league team, sadly Town losing 3-1. But the game was played at the delightfully named “Chuckery” ground. It was early days and even the topsy-turvy world of football hadn’t settled down in the slightest. Prior to this match, the Mariners had played and beaten Small Heath (now Birmingham City), and Bootle, and afterwards two league and three FA Cup games were won on the bounce, including victories over Ardwick (Manchester City), Burton Swifts and Lincoln City (5-0 in the FA Cup). Town played Walsall several times in the 1890s, including season 1898-99 when a sixth-place finish in the second division proved to be Walsall’s highest finish even to this day.

Apart from Ashington, the place famed for being the birthplace of Jackie and Bobby Charlton among others, Walsall were Town’s first opponents in the new Division. Town had met the Saddlers three times in three months in 1925 – the last meeting being a 1-0 Round 1 Cup game that saw Town through to the second round. After that the clubs only met once in the next 35 years, which was a fourth Round FA Cup tie at Blundell Park that saw us ease through comfortably with our goals being a hattrick from Pat Glover, and the others from Teddy Buck and PAT GLOVER Cyril Lewis. That brought us into a fifth round clash with our betes-noir of FA Cup Opponents, Wolves, three weeks later in what was to set the all-time crowd record for Blundell Park – 31,651. That game ended 1-1, but the return at Molineux saw us hammered in front of 57,000 fans.

TOWN 3-1 WALSALL 8TH OCTOBER 1960

I’d like to have written that the shiny new Division 3 saw us play Walsall in one of the first games. Unfortunately for literary accuracy, that was not the case. We had to wait an entire season before dropping into the new Division 3 after its inception, and then wait a further season for Walsall to become Champions of Division 4 to join us. So it was that Town won the first meeting of the clubs with goals from Ron Rafferty, Derek Williams and a rare Keith

Jobling effort. That was a good result - for Walsall did a double promotion going straight through into second place winning 28, drawing 6 and losing 12. The following season, Town were promoted to Division 2 too, and just like Walsall they finished second, and just like Walsall we won 28, drew 6 and lost 12!

about that game is... it was never a penalty in a million years! What’s that? It was fifty years ago and we still remember a penalty that never was? That’s like only yesterday – we have far longer memories than that!

A Lew Chatterley hat-trick, a brace from Alan Gauden, and one from Phil Hubbard gave Town their fourth win in five (the other was a drawn FA Cup game at Preston) in front of more than 11,000 fans at BP. The entire area was still in seventh heaven after the previous season’s win under Lawrie McMenemy, and looking forward with confidence to the FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Coventry City. Town, under Walsall old-boy Alan Buckley were firing on all cylinders in Division 3, and looking good for automatic promotion. Four days before this game we had played Burnley in the Northern Final first leg of the Auto-Windscreens Shield, at Blundell Park and drawn 1-1, but the game against Walsall gave us a boost as first Lee Nogan, and then two from Kevin Donovan saw the league form continue. We all remember the wonderful night over the Pennines when we beat Burnley on their own turf, but we only won two more league games after the Walsall victory, and had to go through the agony (including six minutes of added time) at Wembley in the climax to the season. Will this season also have a nail-biting end?

The legend at two clubs

he name Alan Buckley is synonymous with Grimsby Town. In the 1990s, pretty much everything he touched while in charge of The Mariners turned to gold. But two years before he took up his place in the Blundell Park dugout, Buckley had already achieved more in his 13-year spell with Walsall than most footballers (and managers) do in their entire career. Buckley signed for Walsall in 1973 after struggling to break through at his boyhood club Nottingham Forest. The diminutive striker, with his distinctive blonde curls, became a goalscoring prodigy and consistently topped their charts as they challenged for promotion to the second tier. In 1975, he twice scored in a 3-2 defeat of Manchester United in the FA Cup and the following season he hit 34 goals as Walsall finished 7th in Division 3. By the summer of 1978, Buckley had already scored 120 goals for The Saddlers and had developed into one of the most promising strikers in English football. Sold to First Division Birmingham City for £175,000 (close to £1 million in today’s money), he again top scored with eight goals in 28 appearances as The Blues were relegated. A year after leaving Fellows Park, he re-signed for Walsall for exactly the same fee he left for and became playermanager aged just 28. Remarkably, in his first season in charge, he guided The Saddlers to 2nd in Division 4 and earned them promotion back to the third tier. The promotion proved to be the only one of his career as a player, but the first of many as a manager. After helping his team to safety in 1980-81, and 81-82, the next four seasons saw Walsall

play some of the most attractive football ever seen at Fellows Park as they challenged for promotion to the Second Division and earned plaudits from all over the football world after a high-profile cup run. During the 1983-84 season, Buckley made the transition from player to full-time manager as his charges famously reached the semi final of the League Cup. The Saddlers - featuring the future Mariners Craig Shakespeare, Richard O’Kelly and Gary Childs beat Arsenal at Highbury and held the mighty Liverpool to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the semi final. Buckley’s team completely outplayed the best team of the world on the night and their performance led Graham Souness to proclaim that he’d rather play against Juventus than Walsall! Under Buckley they finished 6th in 83-84 and again in 85-86, but when professional gambler and stock market entrepreneur Terry Ramsden took over Walsall in the summer of 1986, the man who’d taken the club to within 90 minutes of Europe, was unceremoniously relieved of his duties the same day the takeover was completed. When he left Fellows Park for the last time, he’d managed them over 300 times and had an impressive win percentage of just under 44%. He was also second in the club’s list of all-time goalscorers with 202 and sixth in the appearance list with 483 to his name. He is, without question, a Walsall legend. Buckley briefly appeared for Tamworth as a player during the 1986-87 season before becoming manager of Kettering Town and later taking over at Blundell Park in the summer of 1988. And we know what happened next…
