James Gannon Good afternoon and a warm welcome back to Edgeley Park, especially to Neal Ardley, his staff, players, and the officials of Notts County FC, that are able to attend this afternoon’s game. Given the respective strengths and league positions of both clubs, FA Trophy Fourth Round ties don’t get much tougher or more competitive. Despite the changes we made in the last round against Guiseley AFC we felt that our team would be strong enough to come through the tie. Likewise, the Magpies made progress away at Morpeth Town with a much-changed team. Regardless of the possible squad rotations made I expect today will offer a very competitive tie with the feel of a big league game (but without the valuable points). I am sure both clubs will have eyes on forthcoming league games, especially those coming up this coming week on Tuesday and Saturday. In any different season, which had started on time and had a better fixture schedule, this would be a competition that would be highly regarded, especially as it provides a real opportunity for non-league clubs to go all the way to Wembley. However, with last season’s final still not having taken place and the thoughts of an empty Wembley, it is
Ties don’t get much tougher than today
difficult to get as excited about the possible outcomes in the competition this year. However, today’s match remains a valuable game for us to get back to the work in preparing for success this season. The squad is in good shape after recent performances and I am delighted to have a fully-fit group of players available for today’s game. We have worked hard over
Christmas to establish a strong league position and gained much credit for a very positive football performance against West Ham, so we should be going forward into this year with a real sense of confidence and seeking to build upon the work that we have done so far. Enjoy the game. JG 05

S P O N S O R E D B Y:
Hello again, I write these notes just after our much-anticipated match with West Ham United, last Monday night. It certainly gave us national exposure during the run-up to the game. What a great performance from the team on a really bad night weather-wise. We were always going to be up against it, playing a side sitting 10th in the Premier League table but the team put in a performance we could all be proud of, at one time looking as if we would take them to extra-time. Today we welcome another cup game with the FA Trophy match here in Edgeley against Notts County, one of our rivals in the promotion race. The game should be interesting to watch as we fell to a narrow defeat away in mid-December when a defensive slip led to the only goal of the game. Hopefully we can move into the next round and add another game to what is turning into a fixture backlog. We have played a number of home games on the run, four including today, could have been five if a week last Tuesday’s home game with Eastleigh had not been cancelled due to this terrible virus. It means we will have played seven games in both January and February and six in March. At the time of writing we are sitting fourth in the table with games in hand still well placed for the play-offs, but a long way still to go. No doubt your return to school has been disrupted I know some of you are back and some working from home. We hope you are all keeping well and look forward to the day when we all meet up again at Edgeley Park. Enjoy the game.

Welcome...
Notts County Nickname: The Magpies Founded: 1862 Stadium: Meadow Lane Capacity: 19.841 Address: Meadow Lane, Nottingham Postcode: NG2 3HJ Distance from Edgeley Park: 96.8 miles (1 hour 54 minutes) Current league position: 7th
Fellow promotion hopefuls Notts County provide the opposition for today’s Fourth Round FA Trophy-tie, and with both teams having started the season strongly it promises to be a very keenly-competed contest. The Magpies reached this round with a comprehensive 3-0 away win at Morpeth Town just before Christmas and will be out to better last season’s run to the semi-finals of the competition. Remarkably, today’s game is Notts County’s first of 2021, with covid postponements causing a 19-day break in their season. Indeed, since The Magpies welcomed County to Meadow Lane on December 15th we have played six games to Notts County’s two! Improving their away form is likely to be a Notts new year’s resolution, with just two wins from six games so far and only five goals scored away from Nottinghamshire. Victories at Sutton United and Chesterfield highlight what the team are capable of on the road, though disappointing defeats have been endured at Dover Athletic and Aldershot to stifle progress. Notts County haven’t won at Edgeley Park since August 1965. If they break that 55-year record today then a place in the last 16 of the Trophy awaits. 08
The Gaffer: Neal Ardley Ardley was appointed as Notts County manager in November 2018 shortly after ending a six-year spell in the AFC Wimbledon dugout. He arrived at Meadow Lane with experience of saving the Dons from relegation to the National League on the final day of the 2012-13 season before taking them into League One via the play-offs three years later. And it was hoped he would be able to prevent Notts County from dropping into non-league for the first time in the club’s history when he arrived as their third manager of the 2018-19 season following the departures of Kevin Nolan and Harry Kewell. Despite a spirited battle, however, The Magpies suffered relegation on the final day and, following the takeover of Chris and Alex Reedtz, Ardley was charged with the task of stabilising the playing side of the club and plotting the club’s return to the EFL. Ardley oversaw a huge turnover of players in his first summer at the helm and, after an understandably difficult start to the campaign, he led Notts County to third place in the table and the semi-finals of the Buildbase FA Trophy before March 2020’s coronavirus lockdown.

County Heaven Hatter in Macc writes: Afternoon, everyone - and greetings from Edgeley Park for a fourth successive game, which, within that sequence, today covers a third different competition. The visit of the East Midlands ‘Magpies’ is also the first to SK3 by a club with ‘County’ as its suffix since Newport came here in March 2013, and, courtesy of an own goal, gave us what was to be our last home win in non-league’s top tier until our return more than half a dozen years later. Today’s Trophy-tie, of course, will offer a chance for (our) County to bounce back in knockout action, following the late FA Cup defeat we suffered, following a highly creditable performance, against West Ham five nights ago. That said, the players did themselves, the club and the National League proud - although, more than on any other occasion so far this term, the one matter for regret was that fans could not be here to enjoy the event and get EP rocking! We turned out one of our less inspired performances in the League at Notts one month and one day ago, so, hopefully,
we can take the opportunity to redress that this afternoon - and, moreover, obviously, in the reverse NL fixture here late next month… a week, as it happens, after we make our rearranged trip to take on those other Magpies from Maidenhead. So much for our visitors, then. Time now to hand over to my esteemed co-contributor, who has plenty of early-year updates for you about things Heavenly. Is that Notts-so, Sandy?! Sandbach Hatter writes: I’ll see what I can rustle up, my friend! After all, it’s Nott like I have anything better to do! Now, if you have never visited County Heaven before, you may be mistaken for thinking we are like so many other football fora up and down the country – confusing and unwelcoming. How wrong you would be! Firstly, our homepage is helpfully set out into five clear categories: ‘Welcome to County Heaven’, where you can introduce yourself when you sign up, and ‘meet’ the Admin team; ‘Stockport County Chat’, containing
everything Hatters-related, from match reports, first -team news and interview clips; ‘Other Stuff’, where you will discover a whole host of other sports to discuss, as well as Big Fudge’s Big Interviews (with several players past and present) and our infamous Off Topic section; the County Heaven ‘Games Room’, including prediction competitions, quizzes, limericks and so much more; and finally ‘County Heaven Indices’, where we have housed all the A-Z anthologies we have amassed over our DECADE as County’s premier fans’ forum! Secondly, you will not find a warmer welcome anywhere in the country – just ask the West Ham fan who signed up to have a chat with us prior to, and then after, Monday’s night’s narrow loss. In fact, fans of all teams (yes, even Burnley) are welcome to pay us a visit, so if you happen to stumble across this article, why not pop along and say hello? Until next time, folks, take care of yourselves, and each other. Animo et Fide. www.countyheaven.com 11

Supporters’ Co-operative A couple of years ago Stockport’s Garrick Theatre did a performance piece called ‘Stockport Voices’ - a series of monologues about life in Stockport, based on interviews with people who live and work in the town.
There was much about County within the production following input from County supporters. The piece was performed a couple of times on stage, with County fans watching, and this was done again by the Garrick via Zoom in the early days of the first lockdown.
Obviously, the prevailing conditions would suggest that a Zoom effort would be likely, but with a live performance an option should circumstances change for the better. That’s the in-tray covered, and our ‘out-tray’ was also a source of encouraging news.
Fast forward to 2021, and our e-mail in-tray received a rare ray of sunshine in the gloomiest of times, as the Garrick confirmed they were planning a ‘Festival of Theatre’ in the summer, suggesting interestingly that the Co-operative and the Garrick might work together on a ‘Stockport Voices’ project that would be exclusively on County.
I had previously revealed that the Supporters’ Cooperative appeal in support of the Wellspring was ‘a few quid short of its target’ of £1,000.
The Co-operative Board are shortly to consider the matter, but it should be a no-brainer really.
Simply excellent, thank you County fans!
There is a deep well of material to delve into, and no shortage of County fans with a story to tell.
Well, late last week, happily we were able to confirm that contributions from County fans had smashed that target, raising £1,130 plus £205 in gift aid.

Terrace Talk More cup action to come at Edgeley Park this afternoon as County host fellow National League side Notts County in the Fourth Round of the FA Trophy. Stockport overcame ten-man Guiseley here in the middle of December, whilst at the same stage of the competition Notts took to the road and headed up to Northumberland where they defeated Morpeth Town. Neal Ardley’s Magpies currently sit 7th in the National League just a point behind the Hatters and today’s visit to SK3 will be their first game of 2021 after their game with Eastleigh was called off because of Covid-19. Eastleigh had also been due to take on County at the start of January but again their predicament with the Covid-19 situation meant that yet another game for Jim Gannon’s side had to be put on the backburner. Many high-profile names have come out in recent weeks to make a case for a circuit break in football due to the high levels of games being affected by the pandemic. West Bromwich Albion manager Sam Allardyce and Ipswich Town boss Paul Lambert have been in favour of pausing the season but by the same token Liverpool chief Jurgen Klopp, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and pundit Gary Neville have all expressed a view to see the game carry on. What seems to have sneaked under the radar is the fact that clubs outside the EFL such as both of today’s teams have already had their season disrupted considerably due to what has been an exceptionally high number of cases since August. Whatever your view, is it right that over half the National League are in some cases three or four fixtures behind say teams like Altrincham, Torquay United and Hartlepool United? Today’s opponents have a lot of experience in their side with names such as the former Barnsley and Coventry City midfielder Jim O’Brien, another
Jim O’Brien
Coventry old boy in team captain Michael Doyle, League Cup finalist with Cardiff City in defender Ben Turner, Goalkeeper Sam Slocombe once of Scunthorpe United and Blackpool and summer arrival Adam Chicksen who lists Brighton & Hove Albion, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers amongst his former teams. Another arrival for the Nottingham side over the summer was forward Kyle Wootton, who spent the whole of the 2019-20 campaign at Meadow Lane. He hit 13 goals in the league last season and started this season in top form with four goals from the opening four games. His last goal was the late winner against Woking at the start of December. Hopefully the local weather will hold and The Hatters will be able to progress to the next stage of the competition. 15

County 3-2 Maidenhead United (AET)
Report: Gareth Evans
On a near-freezing replay-night in SK3, the Hatters warmed the hearts of the County Faithful by dramatically edging out National League side Maidenhead United after extra time.
County took to the field at the outset showing just one change from the starting line-up for the original tie at Maidenhead three days earlier. Ball, now recovered from illness that had ruled him out over the weekend, was recalled in place of Gary Stopforth and as part of a 3-41-2 formation. The Hatters began in lively fashion – rendering Carl Pentney much the busier of the two goalkeepers. The visiting shot-stopper parried a low drive from Stephenson past the left upright after 17 minutes. And five minutes later, following a break by Jason Oswell, he blocked Matty Warburton before tipping over Adam Thomas’ follow-up. Thomas and Warburton both went close again, courtesy of shots that were narrowly shy of the left post. And as half-time approached, Pentney was again called into action to smother a long-range effort from Stephen O’Halloran, as well as keeping out another attempt by the lively Stephenson.

Eleven minutes into the second half, and against the run of play, the ‘Magpies’ stole the lead. An attempted back-pass to Hinchliffe by Chris Smalley from the left did not properly carry on the slow surface – leaving Hyde to seize upon the ball, round County’s Number One and slot home. Four minutes later, the visitors doubled their advantage – as Harold Odametey’s looping cross from the right was headed in at the far post by Sam Barratt from close range.
Despite their forcing a couple of corners in the immediate aftermath, the Hatters looked to be exiting the competition – and in the face of opponents from non-league’s top tier who were content to play the game out. But eight minutes from time, County halved the arrears, after Scott Duxbury fed Stephenson down the left flank and the winger cut in to fire low past Pentney. Two late substitutions were made, and both new arrivals had a part to play in setting up a thrilling finale. First, Bohan Dixon tracked back to mop up a Maidenhead attack after Odametey had broken into the County box. And moments later, with added time about to begin, George West, with the aid of a deflection off visiting skipper Alan Massey, converted a Duxbury cross to bring the scores level and take the tie into extra time. FULL-TIME (after 90 minutes): County 2 (Stephenson, 82; West, 90), Maidenhead 2 (Hyde, 56; Barratt, 60 The momentum was clearly with the Hatters as the first period began – and just four minutes into it, they went ahead. Duxbury completed his own hat-trick of assists for the evening by exchanging passes on the left with Stephenson, before delivering a low cross that was turned in by Ball. Five minutes later, however, their numbers were reduced, when Winter picked up a second yellow card following a tussle with Odametey, and became the first County player to receive his marching orders since Lewis Montrose at Brackley almost two years previously. Energy reserves were required on the part of the remaining County players – but one with seemingly little shortage in that regard was the tireless Stephenson, who forced another save from Pentney just ahead of the extra-time break. During the second period, Maidenhead made a concerted effort to get back on terms. Substitutes Christian Smith and Maximilian Kilman respectively shot and headed wide, before the visitors’ third replacement Sean Marks was denied by Hinchliffe at point-blank range. But the Hatters held firm to book their place in the last eight. FINAL SCORE (after extra time): County 3 (Stephenson, 82; West, 90; Ball, 94), Maidenhead 2 (Hyde, 56; Barratt, 60). Team: Hinchliffe, Cowan (Dixon, 88), Duxbury, Winter (Capt.), Smalley, O’Halloran, Thomas, Ball, Oswell (Stopforth, 74), Warburton (West, 89), Stephenson. Unused Subs: Clarke, Ormson. Booked: Ball, Dixon. Sent Off: Winter. Attendance: 1,131 (21 away).

Tuesday 15th December 2020 Notts County 1-0 Stockport County fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Notts County in front of the BT Sport cameras, with midfielder Jake Reeves’ first-half strike enough to separate the two sides in a cagey affair at Meadow Lane. John Rooney came close to opening the scoring but was denied by a fine save from Magpies goalkeeper Sam Slocombe while Ruben Rodrigues saw his shot kept out by Ben Hinchliffe. But County fell behind when Reeves opened the scoring 10 minutes before half-time. In response, Alex Reid sliced a shot wide and Richie Bennett was denied by Slocombe as County slipped to just a second loss in nine games. County line-up (3-4-1-2): Hinchliffe; Hogan ©, Palmer, Kitching (Jennings, 46); Minihan, Keane (Thomas, 46 – Croasdale, 79), Maynard, Williams; Rooney; Reid, Bennett. Unused subs: Barnes, Britton.
