Cue Digital Kaleidoscope Zip Dress $289.00

Miss Shop nail polish in Orange $7.95

Gucci Guilty EDT 50ml $114

Tell us about some of your favourite trends for summer? I’m loving all the bright colours and graphic prints this season. This dress by Cue features an on-trend Aztec print that would be great for a summer party!

What’s your go to outfit for a warm summer’s night? A maxi dress is the perfect summer option if you are wanting something easy and comfortable to wear – I love the Wayne by Wayne Cooper dress.

What’s your number one beach day essential? YSL Terre Saharienne bronzer in 03 $85

A Cozi of course! There is a print for everyone in my current collection however I particularly love the bright floral print of this bikini – fun and ultra-feminine.

Do you have a signature scent?

Cozi by Jennifer Hawkins floral bikini top $69.95 and bottoms $59.95

I’ve always loved Gucci by Gucci and lately I’ve been wearing the Gucci Guilty, which is also divine.

How do you achieve your healthy glow? Bronzer is a girl’s best friend, it’s just important to find a shade close to your natural colour so as not to overdo it. My favourite at the moment is YSL Terre Saharienne bronzer.

Do you have a favourite lip colour for summer? I’ve been wearing bright colours that pop lately, such as hot pink or orange, but when it’s super hot I think a natural glossy lip works best. My fail-safe options are M.A.C Crèmesheen Glass Paper Lantern and YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain in shade 12.

Fashion – The Ultimate Book of Costume and Style (hardback) $59.99

What nail colours are you loving right now? You can have so much fun with your nail colour. At the moment I’m really loving neon shades – they just look so good with a tan. Miss Shop has a great range of on-trend colours.

What book are you loving right now? Urbanears Plattan headphones in Raspberry $99.95

Fashion – The Ultimate Book of Costume and Style offers hours of inspiration.

What will be on your summer play list? I love a bit of RnB however right now I’m really into Guy Sebastian and Lupe Fiasco. I love listening to music at the beach so I always make sure I’ve got my Urbanears headphones on me.

welcome

UPFRONT NEWS & EVENTS LIFE AT... If you haven’t caught it already, you really must see the ABC program ‘Life at 7’. It is the best documentary on television. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be amazed and you’ll love these kids! I’ve been watching since the beginning of the ‘Life Series’ with ‘Life at 1’ then ‘Life at 3’, ‘Life at 5’ and now this latest pair of programs. It’s the show you’ll want to tell everyone about, I certainly have (and I’m doing it again here). You can catch it on iView if you’re quick or buy the series from the ABC Shop. Some of the experiments they conduct show just how different girls and boys are in their behaviour. It’s in the genes. And it’s even more apparent to me today as the DUO team (yep, they’re ALL women) have gone absolutely bananas over the arrival of Myer. We’re talking about someone who’s been waiting thirty years for Myer to come to Townsville and had to be one of the first through the door. You know who I mean, Joan. And isn’t it a fantastic boost for our city? Not only the range of products you can now buy locally, but the jobs that have been created. And there’s even talk of a second Myer in a few years. I’m starting to sound like everyone else in our office now but it’s understandable. Exciting times have arrived! Let’s go and enjoy them.

horoscope

Capricorn

22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY You’re determined to succeed. Despite complications for many of your zodiac neighbours, you appear genuinely unperturbed. Should you feel inspired to try something new, trust your instincts. Your reward? An upwardly mobile lifestyle. But it’s not all work and no play. A bedroom bonus coincides with professional interests.

23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER November offers rewards, recognition and increased cash flow. If this doesn’t lead to contentment - you’d better book into the nearest ashram, fast. Basically, the choice of direction is yours. Trust your intuition, calculate risks and let common sense lead you, especially in matters of the heart. A change of image is likely.

What does NOVEMBER have in store for you? Astrologer Tanya Obreza has these predictions...

Scorpio

Sagittarius

Leo

23 JULY – 22 AUGUST November encourages you to give ambitions a nudge. But you first must discard any debilitating doubts. Over time, it can become very easy to fall into a safe and familiar rut. This could be fuelled by fear of failure, or simple lethargy. Neither suit your usual fiery nature. So while the cosmic coast is clear, make changes.

Virgo

You’re now encouraged to look after your own interests. The fear of letting people down is often a strong incentive to carry on, but you must acknowledge that you’re only human, so give yourself a break. If necessary, pass the baton to someone else for a while. This is a month for catching up on life’s pleasures.

23 AUGUST - 22 SEPTEMBER Money and work play a strong role in November, and the outlook is positive. There may be painstaking paperwork involved, but even that won’t phase you. At play, an old love could be rekindled. And though you may feel warmed by the familiarity of an old flame, if you’re serious about the present - don’t surrender to the past.

Want your own personal profile?

20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Expect an active month ahead. The only hitch comes when Saturn tries to confuse matters. If you’re fighting for a worthy cause, expect some heated exchanges. If need be, stand your ground. With enough determination, you won’t be pushed off familiar territory. Besides, the recipients of your concern are counting on your involvement.

19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH Consider yourself blessed. November recharges your confidence and style. The planets introduce playfulness, as well as good fortune. Even in your love life, you dare to be different. Socially, you’re a natural. At work, ambitions and creativity fall into synch. Go for it, Pisces. You now have heavenly support.

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL There’s always someone who’ll try to nudge you into a reluctant corner, which isn’t usually a problem for headstrong you. After the 13th, welcome help arrives in the form of Mars - which encourages you to revise personal boundaries. As the borders change, so will the rules, and unwelcome protagonists find themselves ousted.

21 APRIL – 20 MAY You’re ready for enchantment and a whole lot more excitement. Fortunately, the cosmos agrees. With quite a few zodiac neighbours still struggling, there are very few people around to disrupt your plans. Take this time to strengthen work strategies. New friendships also appear promising, as do financial prospects.

20 DUO MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au

21 MAY – 21 JUNE There’s plenty of reason for excitement. Take any professional prominence you’re offered this month. When you choose to shine, you truly sparkle. You have more time to please yourself too, particularly after the 22nd when the focus shifts away from work. Late November signals play time, offering the right balance between work and play.

22 JUNE – 22 JULY The focus may shift away from professional ambitions for now. Having worked so hard, you’re ready to enjoy the more delights of life. New friendships or romance crop up, while those already happily coupled zero in on wilder delights. Whatever happens, November offers up many exciting agendas. Life should feel anything but dull.

23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER Sometimes the best form of defence is attack. Even so, in early November you could be opting for overkill. By all means remain assertive, if need be. But what others suggest may not be all wrong. Compromise is the key. If still feeling unappreciated by late month, stay patient. Your special talents haven’t been forgotten by the cosmos.

JUPITERS’ LATEST DINING ESTABLISHMENT KŌBE HAS BEEN WOWING DINERS SINCE OPENING JUST OVER A MONTH AGO

JUPITERS’ NEW KŌBE RESTAURANT IS A ROARING SUCCESS

It’s been nothing but positive feedback since the doors swung open with comments such as ‘the steak was cooked to perfection’, ‘we were so full after the main that there was no way of fitting in dessert’ and ‘the afternoon just passed us by as we enjoyed a great meal, fabulous service and a spectacular view across to Magnetic Island’ to mention a few. Representing a new destination in Townsville’s culinary scene, Kōbe is located in the hotel lobby directly above Aqua – you can’t miss the beautifully designed steel bull’s head framing the restaurant’s entrance. Pronounced Ko-bay, the restaurant is open seven nights for dinner from 5.30pm-10.00pm and three days for lunch on Friday to Sunday from 11.30am-3.00pm. The delicious menu has been designed specifically to offer premium quality food, showcasing an extensive beef selection as well as other contemporary culinary delights such as fresh seafood and vegetarian options. The restaurant features a private dining room, perfect for business lunches or special occasions, seating up to 20 guests and overlooking the built-in wine cellar. On occasion, Kōbe will play host to special events such as Christmas lunch, Valentine’s Day dinner and Australia Day festivities. THE FIRST SPECIAL EVENT at Kōbe will be a Melbourne Cup function on Tuesday 6 November. For $125 per person, punters can enjoy a delicious three-course set menu, 3½ hour beverage package including Chandon on arrival, and entertainment including a fashion parade and, of course, the screening of the race that stops the nation. WANT TO KNOW WHAT BAUBLES WILL BE ADORNING YOUR NECKLINES AND WRISTS NEXT? ITALY HAS THE ANSWER. STORY BY CARLA CARUSO FOR DUO MAGAZINE

TOWNSVILLE MAY BE A LONG WAY FROM ITALY, BUT ITS TRENDS HAVE A WAY OF TRICKLING DOWN UNDER – INCLUDING IN JEWELLERY.

I was invited to see what will be tantalising our desires next at the international jewellery trade show, VicenzaOro. The first part was attending the luxury About J event in Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Italian Alps – a magnet for the jet-set and European aristocracy crowd. (Much of the 1963 classic, The Pink Panther – fittingly, about a jewel thief – was filmed here, as were scenes for James Bond’s For Your Eyes Only and Sly Stallone’s Cliffhanger.) Then it was onto the nearby Vicenza, dubbed the “city of gold”, for the opening of the fair’s autumn edition. The About J event, staged at the Grand Hotel Savoia, gave a select audience of media and buyers an exclusive peek at the wares of 23 prestigious Italian and foreign brands. Among them was Robert Coin, which features super-

model Christy Turlington in its latest campaign wearing scorpion-inspired pieces, and Mattia Cielo, which oozed with colourful tourmalines and iridescent shades of pearls, set in titanium. At Vicenza – the centre of Italy’s jewellery trade, where the fairgrounds stretch for kilometres – some 1400 exhibitors from Italian gold-smithing districts and 30 foreign countries were present. The stands here are more like high-end boutiques and, the fair-goers, all fashion plates. Adding a celebrity touch was a chic, monochromatic collection on display by jeweller Robert Procop in collaboration with actress Angelina Jolie, dubbed Style of Jolie. Meanwhile, Rosato, known for its girly charms inspired by shoes and bags, went “pretty in pink”, showcasing its bling amid cupcake stands and ballet dancing. Crivelli, alternatively, went to the dark side, showing off

22 DUO MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au

bracelets and rings with burnished white gold, studs, Gothic crosses, embedded diamonds and deep red rubies. The fair’s official magazine, Vioro, listed the major jewellery trends, as follows – and you’ll find there’s something to suit every taste! NATURE-INSPIRED. “The celebration of nature is endless,” Vioro enthuses, and it isn’t wrong. Roberto Bravo showcased a collection, dubbed Global Warming, featuring an abundance of butterfly and floral motifs and coloured gems, with a message to respect the world’s most valuable asset. Meanwhile, Roberto Coin flaunted high-end pieces inspired by scorpions, cobras and Siberian tigers. Taking the theme further, Hellmuth, famous for its “croco” jewellery echoing luxury reptile skin, released a line of pendants dedicated to man’s best friend, which can be personalised with the image of your pet pooch!

design NEON HUES. Fluorescent shades on the fashion catwalk were echoed in the accessories on display, echoing the “kaleidoscopic swirls” of the sixties, according to Vioro. An “unconventional spirit of colour” was highlighted from the fluoro orange and pink wristbands by Schofer Germany to the rainbow of cocktail rings on offer. Rings were also inspired by Yves Saint Laurent, featuring oval stones worn sideways. THE ORIENT. With the Italians keen to woo the Chinese market, Oriental inspiration featured heavily, including, according to Vioro, through “the use of jade, Chinese snakes and dragons… cut/carved gemstones, marquetry [and] enamels”. Roberto Coin was among such labels to pay tribute with a dragon-inspired bangle and ring in white gold with colourless diamonds, emeralds and enamel on display. PRIMITIVE CHIC. Vioro said: “Primitive is [now] modern… the consequence of a need for authenticity.” In this, it said: “Favourite materials include wood, leather, rutilated quartz, and brown and cognac diamonds.” Echoing this “tribal exoticism”, Mattioli flaunted an ‘African Queen’ necklace and bracelet set with black opaque oval elements, inspired by the Masai people, offset with pink gold. Cuffs also dominated, intended to be worn like battle armour. LOCAL CULTURE. “The natural reaction to [globalisation] is the refuge found in the… traditions of one’s own home territory,” Vioro said, adding it is “about the zero-mile ideology, which finds kinship in craftsmanship”. Brands took heed, with Sicis Jewels reviving the 18th century Italian art of micro-mosaics in its pieces, set among gold and diamonds, while Misis flaunted hand-carved natural shell cameos. Other labels featured traditional motifs like the Turkish eye-in-hand and Italian coral horn-shaped pendants, worn to protect against the “evil eye”. SCI-FI. Science fiction also had an impact including through “the weightlessness/lightness [of the jewellery], digital-cutting effects, laser-cut surfaces, pavé settings like screen printings, glittering geometrics [and] materials such as titanium and carbon”, as well as

pieces having a unisex appeal. Roberto Demeglio went sci-fi with its ‘Margherita’ rings, based on the shape of a daisy, featuring a rotating flower with petals of black diamonds, mounted on a stretchable band made up of micro-rings.

BLING IT ON! Sicis Jewels

“CORTINA D’AMPEZZO IN THE ITALIAN ALPS IS A MAGNET FOR THE JET-SET AND EUROPEAN ARISTOCRACY CROWD.”

COLOUR ME HAPPY

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT FOUR BOTTLES OF COLOUR COULD REVEAL SO MUCH ABOUT YOU? INTERVIEW CARLY LUBICZ PHOTOGRAPHS ANDREW RANKIN

TRICIA SHARKEY greets me at the gate. She’s wearing a stylish, colourful dress with a chunky red necklace and ruby lipstick, and has just got home from her day job in television sponsorship. Ushering me inside, the vibrancy of Tricia’s outfit and her sunny personality almost pale with the scene that awaits – about 110 coloured bottles take centre stage, with the surrounding walls peppered with artworks that display a veritable rainbow of colour. “One of my long-term clients gave me this one,” Tricia gestures towards a piece featuring a mermaid on a rock watching the sunset. “She said it reminded her of me.” Tricia Sharkey has many facets to her life – career woman, skilled touch football player, avid races attendee, social butterfly – but one spectrum that others often don’t see is her passion for Aura-Soma. So what is that exactly? (Hint: It has something to do with the bottles, but nothing to do with purple velvet gowns and crystal balls.) “Aura-Soma uses colour to help us become more consciously aware of our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual sides and is particularly helpful for those undergoing major changes in their life,” Tricia passionately explains. “I’m fortunate to have people who’ve seen me over time say I’ve changed their life, but my response is always that I didn’t – they did. I just put a new perspective on the situation.” Tricia discovered the world of Aura-Soma when she was living in Alice Springs in 2000. Her mother had passed away after battling an extended illness and she couldn’t shake the sadness. She wanted to see a clairvoyant, but a friend suggested she visit Vicki Engeham – a qualified professional who dealt with a unique system involving colour. “Through seeing Vicki, I realised I wasn’t stuck in grief – I was actually really angry, and when you hold onto grief and anger, it manifests in the body,” Tricia says. “Once I understood that, I could begin letting go.” As Tricia puts it, you can’t hide from the bottles. Each one is split into two sections and has various mixes of the primary colours of red, blue and yellow to form a full spectrum of colour combinations. Tricia will leave the room and ask you to select the four that most appeal to you. Once she returns, she can begin the reading – going through each bottle, one by one, and explaining their significance; whether it relates to your potential in life, the here and now, or what’s stopping you. “It’s all about helping people to live a better life, and the more they can understand themselves, the better they can live,” Tricia explains. “You cannot change the past – you only have control over the here and now, but your attitudes today will affect the future.” After 12 years of training, Tricia has recently travelled all over the world helping people of various backgrounds to better understand themselves. She has just returned from New South Wales where she assisted Australian and New Zealand Aura-Soma trainer Susie Mulholland to educate other practitioners. “It has been wonderful to help

others and continuously teach my students, but to now teach the teachers has been a remarkable opportunity,” Tricia tells. As well as using her counselling qualifications to guide people through their colour consultations (everything remains totally confidential), Tricia also offers massage using the essential oils from the colour bottles and conducts Louise L. Hay courses on creating positive mindsets. “At the end of the day, everyone just wants to be loved for who they are and be happy,” she says. “I just give people who are stuck the tools they need to move forward, so they can let their true colours shine through... and that goes for all you women who like to hide behind black!”

GREAT WHITES FROM CHILLYBIN COUNTRY

zest best at it’s

IN RECENT MONTHS I’ve written a lot about trends in the bar industry. Probably the biggest wine trend in the last decade has been the huge dominance of New Zealand sauvignon blanc throughout the world. In fact, if you mentioned sauvignon blanc to most wine lovers they’d immediately think of Marlborough or Hawke’s Bay and not Bordeaux, where the grape originates from. Is this a good thing? Absolutely. With the modern drinker looking for a more refreshing tipple, it makes sense that New Zealand sauvignon blancs lead the charge. With its climate lending itself beautifully to cultivating an intensely flavoured grape with balanced acidity, the New Zealand sauvignon shows no decline in popularity. Two of our favourites at The Heritage Bar are Squealing Pig and Secret Stone, both from the Marlborough region in the South Island. Squealing Pig is wonderfully complex as it brings the generous fruit flavours together with a lovely mineral character and pleasant acidity. Secret Stone has been a true stalwart of the sauvignon blanc industry and has been doing great things for years. With a big hit of fresh citrus and a clean acidity there is little wonder this is many peoples ‘go to’ white wine. Next time you dine with us, try one of these wines as they really suit the majority of our menu. Keep shakin, Josh

“I DEVELOPED A REPUTATION FOR BEING AN ATTACK DOG; BUT I WASN’T REALLY. IT’S ABOUT HOLDING PEOPLE TO ACCOUNT.” CR JENNY HILL

EX-ARMY RESERVIST, PASSIONATE COOK AND OWNER OF SOME MIGHTY THICK SKIN. JENNY HILL HAS OCCUPIED THE MAYOR’S SEAT MORE THAN SIX MONTHS NOW, BUT HOW MUCH DO WE REALLY KNOW ABOUT TOWNSVILLE’S FIRST MADAM MAYOR AND HER ULTIMATE VISION FOR THIS GREAT CITY? 36 DUO MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au

cover story DUO SPEAKS EXCLUSIVELY WITH TOWNSVILLE MAYOR, COUNCILLOR JENNY HILL

THE REAL JENNY INTERVIEW - CARLY LUBICZ PHOTOGRAPHY - ANDREW RANKIN

YOU’RE A WIFE TO SHANE AND MUM TO TWO ADULT CHILDREN – CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE ‘KIDS’? Lara is 23 and Aiden is 18. Lara is studying Journalism in Brisbane, and Aiden has just graduated and finished his (Australian Army) training at Singleton – he’s currently in infantry. I used to be a reservist and, when my husband got out of the army, he joined the reserves too. It’s good because I can talk to my son a lot about what he’s doing in the army and what he’s up to. A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOUR DEFENCE BACKGROUND…No, they wouldn’t. It was a lot of training and part of it was being put in pressure situations where we had to make snap decisions. We learnt how to run a command post and how to basically lead in a voluntary environment. HAVE THOSE SKILLS TRANSFERRED TO NOW? They have, and you often lead by example. It’s like walking into another unit where you have a group of people who don’t know you, and trying to at least win their confidence. And that’s what I need to do with the Townsville community. HOW DOES THAT SIT WITH BEING TOWNSVILLE’S FIRST FEMALE MAYOR? There’s been a lot of speculation about women at large and whether they’re competent and make the right decisions. IS THAT RIDICULOUS IN THIS DAY AND AGE? Yes and, ironically, you have a female Mayor in Townsville, a female

Mayor in the Whitsundays, a female Mayor in Mackay and you’ve also got a female Mayor in Rockhampton; so the northern region is well represented. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? What spare time? If I get the chance, you’ll catch me at the gym with one of the other councillors. On weekends I try to set aside two hours to do a training session – during the week it’s just too hard. Last night I finished here, attended a function, did some shopping, then did a radio interview for Triple T, and then I got home at 7.45pm and cooked tea… it was my turn and I hadn’t cooked in a while. SO YOU STILL TAKE TURNS? YOU DON’T PULL THE ‘I’M MAYOR AND FAR TOO BUSY’ EXCUSE? No, I like cooking anyway. It’s one of the things I do to relax. As I grew up, food was one of the things that brought the family together. My parents were Southern European (Maltese) and Sunday was the big thing. I can still cook a mean rabbit. HOW ARE YOU FINDING THE EXTRA HOURS AND THE BALANCING ACT INVOLVED WITH THE ROLE? Getting into local government is good for helping to improve your local area, and you don’t have to go away as often as state or federal; so if you want to still be involved with your children and what they do and your family, you can do that and be a representative for local government. I used to be on council and work at the hospital because, in those days, council was only

part time and I still had time to spend with the kids. Now they’re older and moved out of home, I have a lot more flexibility and don’t have to be worried about being home to make sure everyone has a meal… I also don’t have to spend $400 a week on groceries (laughs). WHAT DOES YOUR HUSBAND SHANE DO? After a long career in Defence, he’s working for Ergon (Energy) now as a trade trainer of apprentices. SO HE WASN’T AFFECTED BY THE JOB CUTS? Not this round, but we are waiting to see about the next round. YOU SPOKE OUT ABOUT THE TELSTRA JOB CUTS RECENTLY… DO YOU SEE PART OF YOUR ROLE AS ‘CHAMPION FOR THE PEOPLE’? I can tell you now, we spoke out about Telstra and we had a meeting with some people yesterday and nearly 80 per cent of those people now have re-employment. So by taking a stand and speaking out to highlight these issues, you can make an effective change and assist people in the community. You need someone to go out there sometimes and be a rallying point. DO YOU NEED TO STICK YOUR NECK OUT ON OCCASION? There used to be a saying, ‘No guts; no glory’. And sometimes you do – you’ve got to stick your neck out. You might get it chopped off every now and then, but other times it can actually get some really positive results. It’s about having the courage to do that. >

cover story

THE BUDGET AND TRYING TO FREEZE RATES HAVE OBVIOUSLY BEEN BIG FOCUSES FOR YOU… I still think we could have brought in a rates freeze, but I didn’t have the full support of the council. But I did attack the budget quite fiercely and yet I was able to, this year, ensure we are spending money on fixing assets – which people can’t see – but it’s completely necessary. We can build new sewerage treatment stations, but if the pipes getting there are old or broken it’s not going to matter. It’s about understanding the full service of council, but then also having a vision for the city.

YOU’RE NOW ALWAYS IN THE PUBLIC SPOTLIGHT. DO YOU NEED TO DEVELOP A TOUGH SKIN? You do, and you need to be a bit more careful about what you do and say out in the community. Five years ago I’d go on a pub crawl with some of the doctors and nurses I used to work with; I wouldn’t do that today. You just have to be a bit more aware that – yes – you are in the public spotlight and you are there to represent the community and put your best face on at all times… the job is really 24 hours a day and, the moment I step outside the front door, I’m there to represent our community. Around the house you could catch me in an old pair of tracksuit pants and a t-shirt. HAS THAT PRESSURE AND JUDGEMENT TAKEN A BIT OF ADJUSTING TO? Look, it’s been like that for a while. In the previous council because I’d be the one saying, ‘Hang on, what’s this? What’s this? What’s this?’… I developed a reputation for being an attack dog; but I wasn’t really. It’s about holding people to account and I still do that now with our staff. Everyone wants to spend money and I say, ‘That’s fine, can you show me how to do this and still keep within budget?’

WHAT IS YOUR VISION? Overall, it’s to make it the capital of northern Australia and to have people coming here to do business, which creates jobs. We are in a very good position here at the moment in terms of the federal government spending on things like the NBN. It means we can start looking to attract things like call centres and data hubs… looking at the new industries that are starting to take shape all over the world. They won’t be able to do that in Cairns and they can’t do it in Mackay. WHERE DO YOU SEE TOWNSVILLE IN FIVE YEARS? As I said, very close to being the capital of northern Australia. Where we have major sporting events and our port operating to its highest capacity with mines opening up in the North West mineral province, and them sending the bulk of their product through Townsville; with Townsville businesses helping to service them. But I don’t want to see a city grow for profit; it needs to maintain its liveability because that’s why people love it. People still go crabbing in Ross Creek and fishing – you can’t do that in a lot of the major capital cities, but you can do it in Townsville. Our region is a great place for the whole family, but I do want to ensure we get growth here so the kids don’t have to go to Brisbane or Sydney for work.

38 DUO MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au

WHAT INITIALLY GOT YOU INTO LOCAL GOVERNMENT 15 YEARS AGO? Tony Mooney (a past Townsville Mayor) asked me if I’d be interested in running for local government and, once I got elected, I worked with him. You look at the projects achieved in that time – they brought Korea Zinc to Townsville which created 600 jobs, and we developed The Strand, and that itself became a major economic driver and the postcard of the city. For us now, we have the Jezzine project, which is the missing link on The Strand. Opening up the mall was always going to be important to rejuvenating the city heart and – while some people living in other parts of the city can’t understand why we invest in there – the CBD is important because it’s where the visitors and business leaders first come to. We need it to be functional and be a postcard representation of what the rest of the city is like. It’s a bit like The Strand – the two meet at the bottom end of Flinders Street and we need them to both be working properly. WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER KEY FOCUSES? To bring people back into the city and to encourage business people to build and operate in the CBD. We have that with the state government and we’re now looking at a private group to come onboard. We need people living in here – we need to bring 30,000 people into the CBD by 2030. We can’t afford to keep having this massive urban footprint – it is quite inefficient. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THE CBD UNITS ARE STARTING TO GET SNAPPED UP… They are, and we are now looking at encouraging the next phase of unit development in the city. It’s great because you can walk down the stairs, go out for dinner or have a drink at the pub, or go to the theatre – it’s all on your doorstep.

DOES IT REQUIRE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF SKILL AND THE RIGHT PERSONALITY TO STEER THINGS THROUGH? I think so, and some of those skills you learn along the way. Some you have already, and that’s why you get elected. But it’s not a council that’s autocratic; it really is a council where we need to often debate things and they are being debated now. SO IS IT GOOD TO HAVE HEALTHY DEBATE? It’s extremely important. Part of the problem is if you don’t debate and discuss these things you’ll make mistakes. And that’s the big thing. You need to take a leadership role when you need to, and take a conciliatory role when you have to. HAVE YOU LEARNT ANYTHING IN THE PAST SIX MONTHS YOU WISH YOU’D KNOWN WHEN YOU BECAME MAYOR? There have been one or two things (laughs), but you just file them and think I won’t make that same mistake again – it’s a learning experience. IS BEING MAYOR OF TOWNSVILLE WHAT YOU EXPECTED? Some of it is; some of it isn’t. Some of the issues that have been raised surprise me, while some

that I thought would be difficult haven’t been, but we’ll get there. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS CAREER? I was a scientist and worked for mining companies when I came to Townsville, then I worked for the Department of Primary Industries, but that bio-security lab closed down; so then I worked at Queensland Health and Pathology for just over 22 years. That was a great job and I got to run a few labs, got to work very late some nights on call; and we’d socialise with the doctors and nurses. Those were the days when you could have a drink on hospital grounds and everyone got to know everyone. Today alcohol is banned and they spend a fortune trying to get people to work together. Just put a carton on ice, call everyone in, sit down and have a chat. You’d soon find out what was going on instead of paying a fortune for consultants (laughs). THE LONG HOURS AND CONSTANT CRITICISM – TELL ME, WHY WOULD ANYONE GET INTO POLITICS? (Laughs) Have you ever worked with doctors while they’re screaming at you down the phone? You’ve got to be able to stand your ground. In health, you’re really there for the patient; and now I’m here for the residents. Residents will tell you things and there is a certain amount of trust. You need to understand your community and how it’s made up, and this community has changed over 30 years. We are doing the new City Plan at the moment and it’s important we get that document right as it will dictate what direction the city will grow in.

years, but it can’t just be about balancing the books. It will be ensuring that the residents get the most value for dollar from their council; but it’s also having a council that will work with the community to achieve sustainable outcomes in economic, environmental and city liveability terms. Personally, it will be raising two kids who are pretty good and staying married… believe you-me, it’s a tough act, as the statistics show (laughs).

cover story

SPEAKING OF FURTHER DEVELOPMENT, HOW ARE YOU GOING WITH GETTING THINGS PASSED THROUGH SUCH A DIVIDED COUNCIL? Some things are difficult; some things are easy. There are a couple of key people I speak to, who speak to me; and ultimately we need to keep the city moving. I don’t want to get into the difficulty other minority councils have where things get bogged down and developments get bogged down… we want people to come to this city, love it and stay. I really want people to do the same thing we did. We came up here 30 years ago – admittedly because of the army – but we stayed and didn’t go back to Melbourne.

“THE CBD IS IMPORTANT… WE NEED IT TO BE FUNCTIONAL AND BE A POSTCARD REPRESENTATION OF WHAT THE REST OF THE CITY IS LIKE.” CR JENNY HILL

WHAT DO YOU HOPE WILL BE YOUR LEGACY? For me, it’s a bit early on, so it’s hard to say what the legacy will be; but overall, I’d like people to say that they were happy that they voted for me and they trusted me. It’s hard to say what will happen over the next three-and-a-half DUO MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au 39

ISOBEL BADIN

INTERVIEW - CARLA CARUSO FASHION SHOOT - SHANNON LAWRENCE PHOTOGRAPHY MODEL - RACHEL DILLON

WHY DID YOU MOVE FROM TOWNSVILLE TO SYDNEY TO PURSUE YOUR DREAM? The FBI Fashion College in Sydney offers a very specific course in fashion business, so I guess that was my decider. Sydney is also logical – there are so many fashion houses here, so many people to meet. The industry revolves around Sydney within Australia; therefore, Sydney [is] really a natural progression for any fashion-related career. HOW LONG HAS YOUR LABEL BEEN AROUND FOR, AND DID YOU WORK FOR OTHER LABELS BEFORE BRANCHING OUT ON YOUR OWN? This season – summer 12/13 – is my first [proper] season. Before this, my label was more of a hobby. I have seven stockists, plus my online store, which will launch when the website goes live soon. I never really spent time working for other labels and companies. I am doing that more now through my study and internships. I was always so focused on creating my own story and achieving my own ambitions that I never really had the time or drive to work for another fashion house full-time... I am working with others more now as my own label grows through collaborations etcetera. DO YOU THINK YOUR TOWNSVILLE UPBRINGING IS REFLECTED IN YOUR DESIGNS? Well, I actually grew up in [the small town of] Clare! I lived with my family on a farm, which was quite rural, until I was about 17 when I moved to Townsville. But I remember driving to Townsville about three or four times a week for about 10 years to attend dance lessons. And if it wasn’t dance, my family and I would go to Townsville for little day trips or to visit Magnetic Island, which was always a highlight. Growing up around the area encouraged me to be more creative in the sense that we had to keep ourselves occupied, otherwise we would drive ourselves or Mum absolutely crazy! My whole lifestyle,

ISOBEL BADIN PIC - JESSIE BUSH/WE THE PEOPLE

from when I was very young, encouraged me to be creative, which I think absolutely reflects in my work now... I didn’t even have a computer or the internet until I won my first laptop in a design competition when I was 18! But I’m so grateful for that now. We had to find other ways to occupy ourselves. IS ISOBEL BADIN YOUR REAL NAME? IT’S SUCH A COOL DESIGNER LABEL. Ha! Yes, Isobel Badin is my real name. I think my parents had ‘Lily’ and ‘Georgia’ picked out for me also, but I ended up with Isobel. And Badin is Czech, so for that reason it makes it a very unique name – within Australia at least. I had to look into it a little further just recently for trademarking purposes and I think I may possibly be the only Isobel Badin. My brother’s name definitely beats mine though – Aston Merik Badin. Such a solid name! WE HEAR YOU HAND-CRAFT EACH PIECE. WHERE DO YOU SOURCE THE BEAUTIFUL MATERIALS? Yes, I do hand-craft everything – well, I mean nearly everything! I paint flowers in pop colours and craft ribbon tassels. I dye fringing and paint silks. I embellish everything by hand using many beautiful materials like crystal, cowrie shell, coral, turquoise, bone, and the list goes on. I source materials from everywhere. What I can I source from within Australia, in order to support Australian businesses, I do, but the bones and shells I brought back from Madagascar – only I couldn’t bring enough back and it’s killing me because I have never been able to find as beautiful a quality since! YOU’RE BANG-ON TREND WITH YOUR NEON HUES. DO YOU THINK YOU WILL GO TO THE DARK SIDE IN FUTURE? I’m not sure. I don’t really plan anything – it just comes – so at this point I don’t plan to go to the dark side because I have no idea what I want to do next. If I ever go looking for inspiration or try to force the creative process, it always ends up a disaster. So I just wait for the ideas to come and scribble like mad when they do. I think it’s the best way to design and work. It’s a sign of happiness maybe – nothing in the way to cloud the ideas!

interview TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK. They’re the lyrics of a Ke$ha song and also the words many women hate hearing in reference to their biological clocks. The female population are well aware of the risks taken in putting their career and travel plans ahead of childbearing, if that is, indeed, their future chosen path. There’s even a phone app, dubbed the Wonder Clock, which counts down the days until they’re infertile to ram home the message. But new research has found blokes have reason to sweat, too, and those who liken “settling down” to something they’ll do when they’re partial to cardiwearing and falling asleep in front of daytime TV may be in for a shock. A French study, following 2000 couples undergoing fertility treatment, found, regardless of a woman’s age, when a man’s over 40, a pair’s chance of conceiving is 70 per cent lower than for those couplings in which the guy’s under 30. Study leader Dr Elise de la Rochebrochard concludes: “Similar to maternal age over 35 years, paternal age over 40 years is a key risk factor for reproduction.” It’s well-known that lasses are born with all the eggs they’ll ever have, while fellas produce sperm from puberty until their dying days. However, Dr Allan Pacey, a senior lecturer in male reproduction in the UK, says: “Older men do seem to produce poorer quality sperm. They won’t find it impossible to get their partner pregnant, but they will find it more difficult.” Not good news for those who consider ageing Lotharios like Hugh Hefner and George Clooney poster boys for commitment avoidance. Plus, a decline in sperm quality means the chance of having offspring with a genetic condition is boosted. Research has found fellas over 40 are almost six times more likely to have a child with autism than those aged under 30. There’s also more risk of having a bub born with schizophrenia, Down’s syndrome or dwarfism. Women are more likely to miscarry if her baby’s father is over 40 than under 30, as well, while other studies show ladies in such relationships are more inclined to pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure when preggers. While Aussie figures on the age of first-time dads keeps inching upwards – now an average of 32.9

years – the young couples on MTV reality television series 16 and Pregnant could well be onto something. Dr Pacey says: “Nature designed us to have children in our late teens and early twenties, although society is not geared up for that, but waiting isn’t the best idea biologically speaking.” Still, rather than storing sperm and going the IVF route in future, Dr Pacey believes: “The best thing to do is to recognise that there may be problems conceiving if you leave it too late. Having children a year or two earlier, if possible, could make all the difference.” That’s all well and good if you’re in a happy, committed relationship, but it’s unfortunately not the case for many keen to bite the bullet. Pete* is 37, single and desperate to be a father before he hits the big 4-0. “I’ve got a successful career and assets and now I want the family. My friends who have kids say it’s the best thing ever. It’s tough when I see my brother with his little ones – I can’t help thinking, ‘I want my own’. It’s not something I think about non-stop, but it definitely plays on my mind.” Jeff*, 32, is gay and reckons that doesn’t mean he’s not paternal – having his own brood is something he’s always dreamed about. Hence, he’s advertised online for a woman to raise a family with. “I haven’t had any luck yet finding anyone suitable – I want to be a part of my kid’s life, not just a sperm donor – but I’m still hopeful. I’d regret it if I never got to go through fatherhood. If I was straight, it’d be a done deal by now.” Steve*, 34, works with kids and is keen to become a dad, too. “I’ve got my own business and I’d love to be able to provide for a family. I’ve tried internet dating and I’m only attracted to women who say on their profiles they want kids. My father was in his forties when I was born and we haven’t always been able to relate – I’d prefer to be a hands-on dad.” Meanwhile, a small but increasing number of fertile, straight men in the US are taking matters into their own hands, opting to sidestep relationships and pursue fatherhood through surrogacy instead. That’s, of course, in a country where there is less red tape and more choice than in Oz in such matters. Still, it’s food for thought… TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK. *Names have been changed.

GRANT COLLINS I AUDIOLOGIST I CLARITY HEARING SOLUTIONS

Introducing Lyric 2

An updated version of a semi-permanent hearing aid should be music to the ears of those in need.

WITH LYRIC 2, THE EXTRA 4MM DEPTH CAN HELP PREVENT PROBLEMS FROM OCCURRING.

I have written in the past about the Lyric, which is basically a contact lens for the ear – a semi-permanent, disposable hearing aid that sits deep down in the ear canal, just millimetres away from the eardrum. The clinic first started fitting clients with these four months ago and now approaches the launch of the next generation of Lyric, called Lyric 2. Below is a list of advantages with added comment on what issues clients have had with Lyric 1 and how Lyric 2 improves on this… The Lyric 1 sits deep in the ear canal, completely hidden from view. It has to be implanted, removed and replaced every three to four months by a specialist Lyric clinician. Because it is so deep, the skin glands of the ear canal near the eardrum do not produce any wax, have few sweat glands and less pain receptors compared to the more external areas of the ear canal. If the device is not inserted in the correct position, it may be more prone to wax blockages, corrosion from perspiration (obviously a major issue in North Queensland) and become uncomfortable. After fitting several dozen Lyric 1 aids, the clinic has found some ear canals are just not long enough to get past the sweat glands and pain receptors. Some patients – although they loved the sound of the Lyric – just found them too uncomfortable as they were hitting the pain receptors. Fortunately, Lyric 2 is 4mm shorter than Lyric 1, so it can be inserted 4mm deeper and is, therefore, less likely to cause pain. Still, the benefits of either version of the Lyric over

traditional hearing aids are numerous – and, firstly and most importantly, they offer hassle-free hearing with no changing of batteries, no putting in and taking out, no cleaning or other maintenance, and no buttons or controls. Also, unlike traditional hearing aids, they do not impact upon your lifestyle at all, so you can shower with them or wear plugs and be able to swim, dive, surf or be involved in any other water sports. Plus, you can ride motorbikes or horses, play contact sports, fish, do intense work such as in the cattle yards, and so forth with them. Again, after several dozen fittings, the clinic has found some of the shorter ear canals were getting dust and moisture into the Lyric 1, causing reliability issues. But, with Lyric 2, the extra 4mm depth can help prevent these problems from occurring. Secondly, the sound quality of the device is exceptional. Because it sits so deep in the ear canal, it retains the natural resonances of the external ear (pinnae) and canal, which assist us with our directionality and fine-tuning of sounds. This includes picking up the noise in front more than from behind. Also, the depth reduces the volume of chewing noises, your own voice and other bodily sounds that are usually present with traditional deep-canal hearing aids. All patients fitted with Lyric 1 have commented on the exceptional sound quality, but with the shorter ear canals, again, there are some problems with the sound of their own voice and chewing noises. The Lyric 2 with the extra 4mm should alleviate these problems.

Oral health for teens and twenties

Testing the boundaries in your younger years can impact the state of your teeth, so take precaution.

© DUO 2012

SOME OF THESE CHANGES CAN AFFECT CONDITIONS IN THE MOUTH AND FORM HABITS THAT HAVE LONGTERM EFFECTS ON ORAL HEALTH.

The teenage years and early twenties are exciting times with many changes - starting and finishing high school, going to university, moving out of home, starting your career and beginning new relationships, just to name a few. These are the years for exploring new interests and testing boundaries. Unfortunately, some of these changes can also affect conditions in the mouth and form habits that have long-term effects on oral health. While some young adults become very conscious of good diet, others start substituting regular nutritious meals for fast food. Eating ‘on the go’ and frequent snacking can become common with teeth affected by such eating patterns, as well as the types of foods and drinks consumed. Testing the boundaries. Young adults may start smoking, drinking alcohol, increasing caffeine intake or trying recreational drugs. All of these habits can affect the mouth. Oral problems linked with these include teeth staining, reduced saliva flow, gum disease and oral cancer. Orthodontics. The teen years are a common time for orthodontic treatment. It can be more difficult to keep teeth and gums healthy with all the wires and brackets needed to move the teeth. Tongue and lip piercings. There are risks of infection with any body piercing procedures. Individuals should ensure that the instruments used are properly sterilised beforehand to avoid the risk of hepatitis B, C, tetanus or

HIV. Certain tongue piercings can chip or break teeth. Gums can also be damaged if the piercings consistently rub against the gum. Medication. Some medicine can affect teeth and gums through high levels of “hidden” sugars or by reducing saliva. Inhalers - particularly those containing steroids - can cause erosion of tooth enamel. Never change your medicines without first consulting your doctor. Ask your doctor about the sugar content of medicines or the affect on saliva. What to do? Well, remember the basics! Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste - this reduces the risk of tooth decay. The most important time to apply fluoride is prior to bedtime as the flow of saliva is lowest during your sleep. Floss daily to remove the plaque and food debris which toothbrush bristles do not remove. ‘Tooth-friendly’ snack choices are also encouraged like nuts, cheese and fruit compared to less healthy snacks of the sugary, sticky kind such as muesli bars. Chew sugar-free gum regularly. This helps to stimulate saliva flow and neutralise acids. Saliva is the body’s natural defence against tooth decay as it constantly washes away acids and replenishes minerals in the teeth. Plus, drink plenty of water with fluoride, which can be a healthy, practical and money-saving alternative to sugary or acidic drinks - and visit your dentist and dental hygienist at regular intervals.

Positive healing

Break the pain cycle and stimulate your body to heal itself through myofascial dry needling.

THE NEEDLES USED IN MDN ARE VERY FINE – MUCH FINER THAN THOSE USED IN TAKING BLOOD SAMPLES.

Got a sore spot that won’t go away? A build-up of stress in a niggly area? Myofascial dry needling can be a fab way to treat either short or long-lasting pain. What is myofascial dry needling (MDN)? It’s a procedure where fine needles are applied to the musculoskeletal system to deactivate trigger points. Myofascial trigger points are small focused areas of fibres within the muscle that are related to the production and maintenance of the pain cycle where pain often occurs as a result of neuromuscular dysfunction. Is dry needling the same as acupuncture? MDN is a modern western medical modality that is not related to traditional chinese acupuncture in any way. Dry needling has its own theoretical concepts terminology, needling technique and clinical application. While MDN employs the tools of acupuncture practice (that being needles and an electronic stimulator), the theories that underpin MDN are completely different. How does MDN work? The exact mechanisms within MDN are not known, but there are mechanical and biomechanical effects on the body while undergoing this treatment that are. Inserting a needle directly into the muscular trigger point causes the muscle to spasm and twitch. This twitching sensation is the muscle ‘grabbing’ the needle and contracting once it has returned to its relaxed state. Inserting a needle to the area also causes a small injury to the site. This stimulates the body to respond to trauma by infusing the area with blood platelets. This not only helps to block pain, but also stimulates the body to heal itself.

Is MDN painful? The needles are very fine – much finer than those used in taking blood samples. You may not feel it penetrate the skin at all, or just a mild, momentary prick. Placed in muscles that are super-sensitive or in spasm, there will be an amount of discomfort. The sensations can range from localised pain or a burning sensation to shooting pains and cramp-like sensations. These types of discomfort is what the therapist looks for to invoke the body’s response. This pain is a positive pain, which fades as the muscle relaxes. What kind of problems does MDN treat? Musculoskeletal problems including, but not limited to back, neck and shoulder pain; carpal tunnel; tension-related migraines; tightness in the buttock and hamstrings, as well as iliotibial band syndrome, or runner’s knee. Chronic pain syndromes, such as fibromyalgia, and other such disorders also benefit. How long will it take to get results? It varies depending on your health, the duration and extent of your condition, how much scar tissue there is, and how quickly your body is capable of healing. Most clients see improvement two to three days after the first treatment. However, for conditions that have symptoms of ongoing pain, a number of treatments may be needed to completely break the pain cycle. Once I’m feeling better, how often do I need MDN? It is assessed on an individual case-by-case. Many clients use MDN as a maintenance program so it can be as little as when chronic or acute pain occurs or as regular as when your body needs it to keep pain away.

SMARTEST MOVE WE’VE MADE BETWEEN THEM, LEANN AND PHIL HAMMOND HAVE LOST 79 KILOS THANKS TO STOMACH REDUCTION SURGERY. NEEDING to slim down before knee surgery, the clock was ticking for Phil Hammond to get weight off. Following his doctor’s recommendation to consult the North Queensland Obesity Surgery Centre, Phil decided on laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, which permanently reduces the size of the stomach. “This procedure appealed to me because it’s a permanent solution. I didn’t want to have regular follow-up visits for maintenance,” Phil says. When Phil had his operation in October 2011 he weighed 128kg but is now a healthy weight of 86kg. “Before the surgery I had severe sleep apnoea, was newly diagnosed with diabetes, had high cholesterol and chronic arthritis of my knee due to my weight,” Phil says. “By my threemonth check up, I was no longer snoring and my blood sugar levels had returned to normal. I’ve since successfully undergone surgery to replace my ruined knee and am making a great recovery.” Not wanting to be the ‘Shallow Hal’ of the relationship, Phil’s wife Leann decided to have the same surgery, which she underwent in February 2012. “In the long run we want to retire and travel,” Leann says. “I didn’t want Phil having an entrée meal while I had a big crumbed steak and chips. There is also diabetes in my family, so I wanted to prevent developing that, as well as improve my self-confidence. “I’m down from 105 kilos to 68 kilos. I used to wear a baggy size 22 so no-one could see my shape. When I wore a fitting outfit after surgery, my first comment was ‘Oh my God, look at you’ and it felt great.” Instead of having three big meals a day, Leann now has six small meals a day. “Where I used to enjoy cake or biscuits I’d now rather have a lighter snack like peanuts or a healthy dip,” she says. “I am so happy I’ve had it done. The comments I get boost my confidence and I enjoy shopping for clothes a lot more!”

SUZANNE JARSCHKE I OWNER I WELLSPRING CHIROPRACTIC

Congratulations!

One of the biggest purchases you will make as newlyweds is a new mattress.

CHOOSE A MATTRESS THAT MEETS BOTH PARTNERS’ NEEDS FOR SIZE, COMFORT AND SUPPORT.

Sleep is essential for a healthy mind and body, especially in times of stress or pressure. If one or both of you is having trouble sleeping, it can even put a strain on your blissful new marriage. Given the importance of sleep, a comfortable and supportive new mattress can help ensure your marriage starts on the right track. If you are like most couples, looking for a new bed can be a daunting experience. However, before investing in this important piece of furniture, here are a few basic guidelines to help ensure newlyweds are getting the right mattress for both bride and groom. Newlywed Mattress Checklist: ■ Think about your needs and space available for your new bed. A queen or king size bed works best for most couples. Get into your usual sleep position (back and side are preferred) and check that you have enough room to move around. ■ Take the time to evaluate a variety of new mattresses. Do you prefer latex or innerspring? The best news is that if you are not happy with your mattress, Sleepy’s offer a 60 Night Comfort Exchange Guarantee. From the day your mattress is delivered, you have 60 nights to ensure the mattress is right for you!

■ Choose a mattress that meets both partners’ needs for size, comfort and support. Lie down on your back to ensure you both are comfortable and that the mattress supports all points of your body. The staff at Sleepy’s can fit you to your ideal bed through their Bed Fitting Program to ensure you receive a good night’s sleep. ■ Purchase the best mattress that you can afford. Many couples set up a wedding fund for guests to contribute towards their mattress. Sleepy’s offer Interest Free Finance to help with this important purchase. The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) has long recognised the importance of the relationship between your spine, your mattress and your health. Sleepmaker, in conjunction with the CAA have developed an exclusive range of mattresses for Sleepy’s, designed for correct postural alignment and relation of the spinal muscles. An underlying principle of chiropractic is “healthy spine, healthier life”. Social divides for Life at 7 HOW MUCH CAN WE REALLY KNOW ABOUT CHILDREN AT AGE SEVEN; AND HOW MUCH DO THEY KNOW ABOUT LIFE? TURNS OUT, QUITE A LOT.

LAST MONTH we were treated to an in-depth look at the lives of a group of seven-year-olds as ABC1’s The Life Series explores how closely we can predict the adults they will become from such a young age. Ask any parent what they want for their child’s future, and they’ll tell you they just want them to be healthy and happy. Without a crystal ball to show us their future, we do all we can to give them their best chance at life. Life at 7 is a fascinating documentary that examines the lives of 11 seven-year-olds that we’ve watched grow every two years through The Life Series; a series that might just be that crystal ball. This fourth instalment of the series toys with some of life’s major social debates: nature versus nurture; whether to comply or defy gender stereotypes; and comparing the success of introverts and extroverts. Through a range of behavioural experiments in the Life Lab, we see how differently these children respond to different tasks or engage in social situations; often discovering remarkable results. Interestingly, the series shows us that gender inequality is inevitable, despite some parents’ efforts to defy gender stereotypes. In one experiment, separate groups of boys and girls were given a short time to play with a castle toy set. The boys dived straight in, with knights and dragons battling it out in no time. Demonstrating behaviour not uncommon amongst adults, the girls spent so much time planning how they were going to play that they didn’t actually get time to play.

In another scenario, the children were painting pictures that were vandalised when their backs were turned, with mixed reactions when the damage was discovered. The boys, while alarmed at first, quickly moved on to creating a new painting. The girls found it harder to let go, and spent more time worrying about whether or not the person responsible would be held accountable. Sound familiar? The Life Series curiously answers questions that parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles have asked themselves at some point in their children’s lives: What traits do our children inherit, and what do they adopt? If you’ve ever wondered how children are shaped by their home, school and social environment and what it means for their later years, Life at 7 and the rest of The Life Series certainly makes for worthwhile viewing. And if you haven’t wondered – watch it anyway, it’s still fascinating. The Life Series is available in ABC stores.

EWEN JONES MP I FEDERAL MEMBER FOR HERBERT

WHEN FLYING HOME IS JUST THE TICKET

There’s as many ups and downs in travelling from Canberra as there is in Parliament

I LOOKED FOR SUPPORT FROM MY FELLOW TRAVELLERS. THEY WERE ALL LOOKING AT THE CARPET OR THEIR SHOES WHILE I IMPLORED FOR SOME PASSENGER SOLIDARITY.

If I can get the 5.30pm flight out of Canberra, I can get home to Townsville on a Thursday night after a Parliamentary-sitting week. You don’t need to know too much about Canberra to know that I would rather be at home than there. So, each week I race to get that flight. There are some issues at Brisbane Airport at present, so circling above the Gold Coast waiting for runway space is part of the trip home. Imagine my surprise landing in Brisbane recently to be told that my connecting flight left without me. But, I have my boarding pass! “We realise that, but we couldn’t wait any longer”. You can appreciate my disappointment, having a full program here the next day and being told they could wait no longer. Lo and behold, this then happened two Thursday nights in a row! Now, you know me, I don’t complain or whinge, but… Last week I made it to Canberra Airport with time to spare. Arriving at the gate, I had a conversation with some ARL development players about the Cowboys and how we were robbed in the Finals. I presented my ticket

to the attendant at the gate. “I’m sorry, but you’re not booked on this flight”. Three weeks of frustration boiled over as I explained what had happened to me in Brisbane and now in Canberra! “I have a choice you know? I could have stopped flying with your airline. I’m sick of this!” I almost said the immortal words “don’t you know who I am”, but I am not that vain yet – I know what the answer would have been. I looked for support from my fellow travellers who were all looking at the carpet or their shoes while I implored for some passenger solidarity. I took a few seconds to consider my options but then I heard: “Mr. Jones, this is Gate 6. You’re boarding from Gate 5”. I looked at my ticket. Did you know that the gate number is printed on the actual ticket? I said thank you, made that perplexed look that asks “Who changed the gate number on the gate?” as I walked to Gate 5 and presented my ticket. The attendant asked if there was anything else she could do for me. I said, “No, thanks very much, everything is just fine”. Oh, the pain…

NICOLE PIEROTTI I CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST I BABYSMILES

TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN... How preparation and distraction can really save the day

I WAS THE PARENT WITH THE BABY THAT OTHER PASSENGERS WERE WATCHING AND HOPING I WASN’T GOING TO SIT NEXT TO THEM.

I distinctly remember my first ‘baby’ plane trip, boarding the plane complete with baby, nappy bag, bottles, changes of clothes and oh, as I squeezed down the aisle it struck me… I was one of ‘them’… I was the parent with the baby that other passengers were watching and hoping I wasn’t going to sit next to them, wondering if the baby would cry the whole trip. Since then I now have a number of essential strategies: Know what activities and places of interest there are for kids that allow them to run around and let off some energy. Take snacks, whatever your kid’s age. Look for places where kids stay and even eat for free – this is a sign that they are kid friendly. Depending on the size of your family, accommodation can often be a challenge, so pre-book! Apartments are by far the cheaper and roomier option. Travel games and activities that are age-related make the trip so much

68 DUO MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au

easier. One of the best is a checklist of Spot It – a stop sign, train, blue car etc. On aeroplanes keep a few deflated balloons in your pocket. When you’re waiting to board, blow them up and let the kids kick them around the airport (in a quiet area) to burn energy, they’ll soon be sitting for hours. Time to board? No problem. Place the balloon in the nearest bin. Another great idea is go to the $2 shop and buy new cards, cars, puzzles, notebooks, pens etc. put in a little clear backpack and when the toy car falls on the floor and slides 6 rows ahead – don’t worry, just leave it go – if it’s a favourite, then you are in the position of trying to get it back!! Leave the favourites at home. You can take children all around the world. Just make sure you have more down time in the day. I can certainly guarantee that when you travel with children you look at the world from a different angle.

A pet is for life, not just for Christmas It’s best to plan ahead as the holiday season approaches.

WE’LL BE OPEN AND FULLY OPERATIONAL 24 HOURS A DAY DURING THE CHRISTMAS PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN ADDITION TO OUR USUAL EMERGENCY HOURS.

We all know that the idea of buying your loved one a pet for Christmas sounds great, and we love the idea of more cherished pets in our community. But as Clarissa Baldwin, CEO of Dogs Trust, UK quoted nearly 35 years ago, “A Dog is for life, not just for Christmas”. We can apply this thinking to all pets and encourage you to plan now if you’re thinking about adding to your family with a pet this Christmas. Consideration now gives you a good opportunity to investigate and research what’s actually involved in becoming a pet owner and what it will mean to your lifestyle and budget. Following are some of the key factors for you to help you make this important decision. There are a number of online tools to help you determine the best pet for your family and your regular veterinarian can assist you with this decision too. Pet Selection Can you have a pet where you live? Some landlords and body corporates have restrictions on housing certain types of pets within the premises which may limit your choices. Other limiting factors may also include the size of your home or yard and how much travelling or work takes you away from home – and your pet. Breed suitability, existing pets and family allergies are all key factors to think about too. Commitment Please remember that different pets and breeds have varying life expectancies. Are you prepared to invest love and care into your new companion for their entire lifetime

– however long that may be? Your commitment to your pet may include a consistent exercise and play regime, regular visits to the vet and constant training and discipline. Costs The on-going costs of owning a pet should be a major factor when deciding what type of pet to get, after all, a goldfish is generally going to be less expensive than a purebred puppy. After purchasing your pet, you’ll also incur other regular expenses throughout their lifetime, including: veterinary bills and vaccinations, food, insurance and training. Not forgetting boarding or pet sitting costs if you travel without your pet, or the travel costs associated with taking your beloved pet with you. Emergency or specialist care costs may be incurred at any time during your pet’s lifetime. If you have insurance these may be covered in your policy, but there could be out of pocket expenses too. We recommend pet insurance for all of your pets. Emergencies over Christmas Whilst we always hope that nothing will happen to our animal friends, sometimes accidents do occur. Our emergency team will be on hand to help. We’ll be open and fully operational 24 hours a day during the Christmas public holidays in addition to our usual emergency hours. Please save our new, easy to remember phone number, 1300 JCU VET (1300 528 838) into your phone now so that you’ll be prepared for any animal emergencies this holiday season.

DR MARGARET REILLY I VETERINARIAN I JCUVET

recipes

SERVES 6 1 cup dried beans (borlotti, kidney or pinto), or 400 g can beans, drained and rinsed 50 g salted butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed 150 g pancetta, diced 4 sage leaves 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 celery stalks, finely sliced 2 carrots, diced 4 potatoes, diced 1 tablespoon tomato purée 400 g can chopped tomatoes 8 basil leaves 3 litres vegetable or chicken stock sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 8 asparagus spears, chopped 120 g green beans, trimmed and sliced ¼ cabbage, shredded 150 g tubettini or other small pasta pesto and grated parmesan, to serve

Minestrone

If using dried beans, soak them in cold water overnight. Drain and rinse in cold water. Melt the butter in a large saucepan or casserole dish over low heat, add the onion, garlic, pancetta, sage and parsley and cook for 10 minutes or until the onion is soft and translucent. Add the celery, carrot and potato and cook for 8 minutes. Add the tomato puree, tomatoes, soaked (or canned) beans, basil and stock and season to taste with pepper. Increase the heat and bring to the boil, then cover, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 2 hours. Break up the potatoes with a wooden spoon and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Add the asparagus, green beans, cabbage and pasta, bring back to a simmer and cook for about 8 minutes or until the pasta is al dente. Ladle the soup into bowls, top with a spoonful of pesto and scatter over parmesan.

This is my husband’s absolute favourite soup, and in winter we have it once a week. It does take some preparation in terms of shopping and chopping, but if you make a large amount, it lasts for days – and my husband swears it tastes better the older it gets. For me the appeal is all about the garnish of pesto and grated cheese. Sometimes I leave the pasta and beans out and simply add them on the second or third serving to refresh the soup. It’s healthy and hearty enough to be a meal on its own. – Leila McKinnon

Spinach and Ricotta Gnocchi with Butter and Sage Sauce SERVES 6 3 large sebago potatoes (about 800g), scrubbed but unpeeled 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 80 g baby spinach 300 g fresh ricotta ½ cup grated parmesan ½ cup grated mozzarella

recipes

Place the potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with cold salted water, bring to the boil over high heat and cook until tender. Drain, then return to the pan, cover and set aside for 5 minutes. Peel the potatoes and, using a mouli or masher, mash until very smooth. Heat the oil in a frying pan over low heat, add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds or until sizzling. Add the spinach and cook for 1 minute or until wilted. Set aside to cool. Place the ricotta, parmesan, mozzarella and 2 eggs in a bowl and mix until well combined. Finely chop the spinach, add to the ricotta mixture and mix until combined. Season to taste. Sift the flower into a mound on a work surface and make a well in the centre. Add the table salt, mashed potato and remaining egg. Using your hands, bring the mixture together and knead until a soft dough forms, adding more flour if necessary. Divide the dough into four portions and roll out one portion on a lightly floured surface until 3 mm thick. Using an 8 cm round cutter, cut out rounds from the dough. Place 1 teaspoon of the filling onto one half of the rounds, fold over to enclose the filling and press the edges to seal. Place on a lined baking tray. Repeat with the remaining dough, re-rolling the dough scraps too. Cook the gnocchi, in batches, in a large saucepan of boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes or until they float to the surface. Remove with a slotted spoon, place in a serving dish, cover and keep warm. Melt the butter in a frying pan over medium heat and cook for 2 minutes or until bubbling. Add the sage and cook for 3 minutes or until crisp and the butter just starts to turn golden. Spoon the sauce over the gnocchi and season to taste. Serve with the salad and lemon wedges.

3 eggs sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2½ cups plain flour, plus extra, for dusting 1½ teaspoons table salt 200 g salted butter 18 sage leaves rocket and shaved parmesan salad and lemon wedges, to serve

DAVID KIPPIN I CEO I TOWNSVILLE ENTERPRISE LIMITED

WHY TOWNSVILLE?

Because when it comes to major events – everyone’s a Winner!

TOWNSVILLE IS A RUGBY LEAGUE HEARTLAND AND REGIONAL ECONOMIC HUB OF SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL WITH A DYNAMIC AND DIVERSE ECONOMY.

It was approximately 10:00am on Friday 27 January that I received a call from Events Queensland to ask if Townsville would be interested in hosting the only Rugby League Test on Australian soil in 2012. “Of course we are interested, are you delirious?” It was confirmed that the Test would be between the Australian Kangaroos and the New Zealand Kiwis, on 13 October. The National Rugby League had selected Townsville along with two other major capital cities as the potential hosts. It would make its decision based upon the merits of the respective bids and what value each city could provide to the development of the code. Whilst I was optimistic, I was also quite realistic about competing against two of Australia’s great capital cities. What made it more difficult was the requirement to commit a significant six figure sum should our bid be successful. Events Queensland offered to partner with Townsville Enterprise to lighten the financial impost and what a fantastic gesture that was. They were from the government

72 DUO MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au

and they were there to help. I subsequently confirmed that Townsville Enterprise would meet the financial commitment and I thus proceeded to pitch the Region’s considerable attributes to the ARL Commission. Townsville was formally confirmed as the winning bidder in June to great celebration. I acknowledge the Cowboys board, management and team for the part they have played in this success, but the real work had only just begun. So the big question still remains, why Townsville? It was recognised by the ARLC that Townsville is a rugby league heartland and regional economic hub of significant potential with a dynamic and diverse economy. Our reputation and potential had won the day. Congratulations to the Australian team for taking out the Test against New Zealand, but how good is Townsville for winning the honour of hosting the only Rugby League Test in Australia this year? Townsville is in a league of its own.

WEED BUSTING WONDER WOMAN RECOGNISED FOR HER WORK IN AND OUT OF THE OFFICE

SHE LOOKS AMAZING IN HEELS, BUT SHE’S AS COMFORTABLE WIELDING A SHOVEL AS A PEN, AND SHE’S ON A MISSION TO CREATE HEALTHY HABITAT IN TOWNSVILLE.

N

New Zealand native Dena Lillico, is tackling Townsville’s weed and pest problems, one rural property at a time. As Project Officer for NQ Dry Tropics’ Healthy Habitat program, Dena works with semirural property owners in areas like Alligator Creek, Black River, and Oak Valley to improve their land and recover native habitat. “It’s fantastic to get out in the bush and work alongside landholders to eradicate problem weeds and pests. It’s a far cry from the airline scheduling work I used to do but I absolutely love being able to help people and make a difference for our local environment.” Since the start of its roll out two years ago, the NQ Dry Tropics’ Healthy Habitat program has worked with 282 people to improve more than 23,899 hectares of land. Healthy Habitat participants, like Brenda and Robert Hood, think Dena is one of a kind and her contribution to the local community has not gone unnoticed. In August, Dena received a call to say she was a finalist in the 2012 Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network (QRRRWN) inaugural Strong Women Leadership Awards, and in September she attended the QRRRWN Annual Conference at St George where the winners were announced. “Dena was nominated for her positive and proactive approach to environmental management in North Queensland,” said QRRRWN Director, Bev Ryan. Dena said she was thrilled with the nomination and the chance to meet other inspiring women leaders, including the finalists and foreign correspondent Sally Sara and author Nicole Alexander, at the awards ceremony in St George. “It’s daunting being around such successful, inspiring women. But then I have to remind myself that we all have our different ways of contributing.

“I think the most rewarding thing about my work is the ability to empower others. I’ve seen people go from not being able to identify a single weed, to knowing the name of every weed on their property and attacking them with vigour.” “Many people don’t realise that Townsville is the epicentre for invasive, land stealing weeds like chinee apple, so this is a really important issue for our region and we are helping people reclaim our native landscape.” Planting hundreds of trees, shovelling truckloads of mulch, pulling weeds and putting smiles on the faces of the more than 140 Townsville locals currently involved in the Healthy Habitat project, is all in a day’s work for this passionate young woman who plans on continuing her passion for working in regional Australia for years to come.

NQ Dry Tropics is the not-for-profit company that has been a leading delivery agent of land and water management change in the local government areas of Townsville, Charters Towers, Burdekin, Isaac, Barcaldine, Etheridge, Hinchinbrook, Palm Island and the Whitsundays since 2005. They work across an area of 134,000 square kilometres. The Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network Strong Women Leadership Awards were the brain child of director Bev Ryan who felt that rural women needed a platform to gain recognition and exposure for the work they do. WELCOME TO DUO’S BRIDE + HONEYMOONS GUIDE How many times in her life does a woman get to don a dress worth the equivalent of a small car in price, be the centre of attention at a humungous party, and have a very good reason to splash out on the glitziest, spangliest pair of heels ever? Oh, and get to have her cake and eat it too, then go on a sun-drenched holiday with her beau for the post-celebration celebration? Once generally! Indeed, your special day is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to feel like Crown Princess Mary of Denmark for a day, so make sure you do it in totally decadent style – or whatever best suits you. Hey, it would be a crime not to. Nicely, we’ve got the lowdown on everything wedding-related in this edition of Bride + Honeymoons. So we suggest popping Muriel’s Wedding in the DVD player, grabbing sugared almonds for snacks, and settling on the couch for some serious magazine perusing. Enjoy eye candy in the form of two gorgeous bridal gown spreads (we don’t want you to be caught in a so-last-season frock!) There’s also advice on how to plan your wedding to a tee so it runs like a well-oiled machine on the day, plus a wedding checklist to ensure you’re feeling serene when your nuptials dawn. Also featured are five real-life local weddings, from a vintage-style daytime garden affair (where the groom popped the question on the couple’s 1500th day together – aww!) to a fairy tale-themed celebration, in which the groom slipped a modern-day Christian Louboutin ‘Cinderella’ glass slipper on his bride’s tootsies. (We won’t tell if you steal a few ideas from the featured celebrations…) As well, we take you to a luxurious five-star Bali resort, which is the ideal place for honeymooning couples. So start humming ABBA’s Dancing Queen and get stuck in! THE DUO MAGAZINE TEAM

the big announcement Finally, the dream has come true for you and your beau – you’re getting married! It’s time to plan the big day your way, but before you get too carried away with happily ever after there are some diplomatic wedding dos and don’ts that will make the journey to the aisle easier.

You probably feel like shouting your exciting news from the rooftops, but back off the accelerator a little – there is a wise way and a woops way to share your joy. The last thing you want to do is offend some of your nearest and dearest by having them hear you’re a bride to be on the grapevine rather than directly from you. The tradition of the groom asking the bride’s father for his blessing before going public with the announcement is alive and well. Your partner’s future father-in-law will appreciate the gesture of courtesy and respect. If you have children from a previous marriage though, you should break the engagement news to them even before you tell your parents. Do it without your fiancé present, so they can feel free to react honestly. They will need time to get used to the idea. Now, as for letting everyone else know. Timing is everything – you don’t want people feeling they were the last to get the news. Once you’ve notified both sets of parents, continue on with other family and friends. In your grandparents’ time a formal letter was the done thing, but these days a phone call or email is perfectly acceptable. While it may seem a little impersonal, emailing does have the advantage of being able to reach multiple people simultaneously, which is less likely to end with noses out of joint. After all your guests are in the know about the nuptials, you may wish to inform the wider community by placing an announcement in the newspaper.

the guest list Deciding who’s on and who’s off the guest list can be a tough call. Couples often start out with a number in mind and before they’ve even made it through the bride’s side, they’ve gone well over it.

not writing the names of the children on the invitation will spell it out clearly enough. Spread the word as soon as you can. You could say something like “we came to the really difficult decision that with the space, budget and time of the wedding it was best to have an adults-only wedding”. Now, what to do when you can only afford to invite 100 guests but your count comes to 140? A quick way to narrow the list is to cut back on the ‘plus ones’. If the person you are inviting is single but will know other guests, you don’t have to add the ‘plus one’ as long as you seat them with friends. If you have a big family and need to decide between some members then work out where the cut-off point is. In many families, if you invite one second cousin, then you need to invite them all. If that’s the case, you may need to set a rule that no second cousins will be invited. It’s safest to apply the same rule to everyone. Remember, you are not obligated to invite your co-workers, people whose wedding you attended, or guests who invite themselves. Ask yourself if you would be hurt if you received no invitation to their wedding. If it’s a no, let them go.

A good place to start is with the known factor of your budget. Once you figure out how many people you can afford to invite, you can start adding up numbers. It can help to divide the names into a ‘must’ and ‘if possible’ list to make it easier to trim numbers later. Location needs to be considered here – how many guests can the venue hold and how much will they charge per head? Another major factor is whether children will be invited. Generally if relatives and friends bring up the kid issue and you don’t immediately say this is a kid-free event, they’re going to assume, and plan, on inviting their children. If you do decide to go down the kids-free route, it’s important this be known early in the piece. Don’t assume

the invitations Most home-based invites are sent out 6-8 weeks before the big day but, if you’re having a wedding abroad, you’ll need to at least double that. You may also wish to send out a tentative ‘Save the Date’ letter to guests beforehand to give them a heads up.

Many couples who are planning a destination wedding set up a website, where they post information on accommodation and travel. Some guests may like the idea of getting together to hire an apartment or villa. Your invites should include the names of wedding hosts, names of bride and groom, day of the week, date, time, address of the ceremony, reception and RSVP info. Regarding gift/registry information, some couples prefer to include this with the invites in the form of a brief note or tactful poem, while others say this information should be spread by family and friends. It’s a matter of personal preference. You may want to incorporate both colours and a motif into your wedding invitations and to carry those colours through to the rest of your wedding stationery, such as seating cards, menus and gift tags for a themed look. Traditionally the RSVP would go to whoever is hosting the wedding, but many people will send gifts to the RSVP address. For this reason it may be easier to change the RSVP address to the bride-to-be. Make sure to set the RSVP deadline no later than 3-4 weeks after guests receive the invitations (and at least 2-3 weeks before the wedding). The more time you give guests to reply, the more likely they are to forget, and you’ll need time to put together the seating chart. You do not want to stress yourself and your suppliers out the last week trying to figure out final head counts. It’s also a good idea to get 20 or 30 more invites than you think you’ll need in case any mistakes are made or you need to invite some last-minute guests.

the gifts Is it okay to set up a gift registry? Ask for cash in lieu of a present? What about guests who’ve already spent a lot of money to travel to your wedding? A good measure of tact is required to navigate these etiquette minefields.

Having a gift registry can be helpful by making it easier for guests to pick out something they know you’ll love. However, guests shouldn’t feel they must purchase something from it. Some people may still prefer the element of surprise when giving a gift, or might have something personal in mind. As more and more couples finance their own wedding, and with the cost of living on the rise, it is understandable that some would prefer to receive a monetary gift. Although some people consider it in poor taste to ask guests for money, you’ll find most wedding guests appreciate that for newlyweds monetary gifts are far more useful to them than a traditional wedding gift as they can put the money towards something they really need such as a house deposit, a car or to help pay for their honeymoon. But what about when guests are already spending a lot of money to travel to your wedding in the first place? Be mindful that many people feel a wedding invitation carries with it an obligation to send a gift, even if you cannot attend the actual wedding. So it might be a good idea to send just wedding announcements to those who live far away and may not be able to make it.

the bridal party How large – or small – your bridal party comes down to personal preference. Siblings and close friends may all have high hopes of being chosen but it can be hard to fit everyone in.

Although it can be tempting to keep adding people to your party, keep in mind that the larger the group, the more work it will be for you. It may be especially difficult to decide on a dress style to suit the sizes, shapes and personalities of your many bridesmaids. Remember, there are plenty of other ways to give people a special role on your wedding day. Why not ask them to light a candle at the ceremony, read a poem or act as emcee? The number of bridesmaids is typically equal to the number of groomsmen, so check with your fiancé before asking anyone to make sure the number works for both of you. But if you can’t agree on the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen it’s not a big deal. There’s no need to make your fiancé cut his old school mate, or feel like you need to add your random office friend just to make it all even-steven. If you have a child of one of the odd bridesmaids or groomsmen in the wedding party, just pair them up. It’s one way to prevent the potential toddler meltdown while walking down the aisle. Budget is also a consideration. It’s fine for the bride and groom to offer to pay for dresses and tuxes, but it’s certainly not mandatory and most couples can’t afford to, so keep your friends’ budgets in mind when deciding what they’ll wear. As a keepsake and reward for their efforts in helping organise the wedding, you may want to purchase the bridesmaids’ accessories.

the timetable So much to do, so little time… Figuring out how to fit everything in so the day runs smoothly can be a challenge. The first step is to take a look at the most common events that occur and the order they typically occur in…

have this particular group of family all in the same place at the same time. You definitely want to get photos of them all together. Rounding everyone up can be a challenge if it’s not planned out. Avoid chaos by deciding how large you want the groups to be then let them all know ahead of time when and where the family photos will be taken. To keep guests with rumbling tummies satisfied while they’re waiting for the reception to begin, consider having some cocktails and canapés served. A good yardstick for how long speeches should run is seven minutes and the order they usually follow is: fatherof-the-bride (who thanks guests for coming, tells anecdotes about his daughter then toasts the happy couple); the groom (who thanks the bridesmaids and toasts them and the parents); the best man (whose speech should be the most entertaining). After the cake is cut, the bride and groom share the first dance then it’s on with the celebrations. Even the best-laid plans don’t always go according to plan so be sure to add in some ‘buffer’ time. By padding your schedule a bit you won’t have to stress if your ceremony starts 10 minutes late or someone’s speech runs long.

The task of escorting guests to the proper seats falls to the ceremony’s ushers – it’s their job to know who sits where. After your guests have been greeted and have signed the guest book, they are taken to their seats. Ushers should fill the pews from front to back, reserving the first few rows for close family members and special guests. However, it’s perfectly acceptable for guests to seat themselves if the wedding is large and the number of guests waiting to be escorted down the aisle is multiplying. After the ceremony comes the photo session. Your wedding day is probably one of the few times in your life you’ll

BRIDE KYLIE FOSTER SAYS HER GROOM, DAVID BATTY, IS A NUMBERS MAN – AND WHEN THEY MET, THEY FOUND ONE PLUS ONE WAS THE PERFECT ADDITION! PHOTOGRAPHY JANE GILBEY WORDS CARLA CARUSO

Mutual friends brought this couple together – and instant chemistry meant they couldn’t bear to be apart. Kylie Foster, 36, a personal assistant, remembers their initial encounter. “I had just moved to Brisbane, so when we first met, David [Batty, 46] asked for my number as he knew I didn’t know many people in the area. He called a couple of days later and asked if I wanted to catch up for lunch. I couldn’t as I was too busy at work, so he asked if he could take me out on the weekend instead. I accepted and he took me for a ride on his Harley trike up to Mount Coot-tha and back to his place for a baked dinner. We have not separated since!” Three and a half years later, David, a stay-at-home dad, popped the question. “David is a numbers man,” Kylie says with a laugh. “He proposed on November 11, 2011, at 20:11 – multiple elevens he tells me is good luck! We had finished eating and were enjoying a glass of wine when he got down on one knee. It was very simple and sweet, but brought tears of joy to my eyes.” The wedding date – March 16 – was also significant being Kylie’s father’s birthday and what would have been David’s late Nanna’s 100th birthday. Kylie says: “David and I decided on the wedding date eight weeks prior. We only wanted it to be a small affair. My mum and dad were also going overseas for a couple of months, so we wanted to do it before their departure. With only eight weeks for planning, we had to make decisions quickly, but everything fell into place. It was all meant to be!” Celebrant Vicki Feeney conducted the ceremony at the rotunda in Anzac Park on The Strand. The 35 guests were informed via offwhite and silver flocked cards, decorated with diamantes, handmade by Kylie. The bride wore a Jovani Couture gown from The Fashion Gallery,

complemented by a bouquet of burgundy roses, champagne heels from Infatshoeation and bling by Jewellery By Design. Her tresses were styled by Moon Hairdressing and makeup perfected by The Makeup Mirror. As the couple had a small wedding, they decided against bridesmaids or groomsmen – though their two-year-old daughter, Erin, was a guest of honour! David wore an off-white shirt, mocha tie and black trousers. On her gown choice, Kylie says: “I wasn’t looking for a traditional wedding dress and tried on quite a few, but nothing stood out. Then [owner] Olga Jordan went out the back and brought out my gown. I was a bit dubious seeing it on the hanger, but when I tried it on, I knew it was the one – silk champagne, strapless, with a mermaid bottom and floral embellishments… everybody loved it!” Following the ceremony, the couple had snaps taken around town by Jane Gilbey Photography, including by the heritage buildings on The Strand. Despite wet weather on the day, the rain stayed away throughout the ceremony and photo session with the heavens only opening up again once they arrived at the Jam Corner reception. “Someone must have been looking down on us,” Kylie says with a smile. “Our wedding day turned out to be everything we hoped it would be – and more!” Guests enjoyed a three-course dinner, plus dessert by the pastry chef: a white chocolate cake with smooth white gânache. David’s father, William, was the emcee. Following the celebration, the couple honeymooned locally at Mission Beach not wanting to be away from their daughter for too long. As for Kylie’s advice for other brides tying the knot? “Be organised, don’t stress and take time to enjoy the day.” This is certainly the way things added up for her!

CHARM

A HISTORIC WINERY ESTATE WAS THE BACKDROP FOR THIS DUO’S DAYTIME CELEBRATION. PHOTOGRAPHY CAROLINE FOGG WORDS CARLA CARUSO

This couple – Bec Astorquia and Andy Irvine, both 32 – admit to being anything but conventional. Bec says: “Not wanting to celebrate the ‘normal’ anniversaries, we celebrated our 1000th day together as a couple. Then, on our 1500th day as a couple, Andy popped the question with a beautiful custom-made card, beginning by saying I’d missed an anniversary!” With Bec growing up in Ingham and Andy in Brisbane, the couple met through mutual friends on the other side of the world – while both were living in London. Their nuptials fell on April 15 this year. The couple fell in love with Glengariff Historic Estate in Brisbane’s hinterland for their ceremony and reception. “The heritage building and picturesque location was the perfect backdrop for the outdoor wedding we were after,” says Bec. “Plus the staff were amazing and always ready to help.” As Bec is a graphic designer, she designed all the wedding stationery, complementing the colours and prints of her bridesmaids’ dresses. “Not wanting to choose a particular colour for the wedding theme first, I went bridesmaid dress shopping with nothing particular in mind,” the bride explains. “When I found a beautiful floral print dress from Alannah Hill for the girls that would fit perfectly with a vintage garden wedding, the colour scheme of pastel greens and pinks was born.” For the invites, Bec designed a mini booklet, which had a tearoff back page for the RSVP card. Bec’s own outfit was designed and made by Mark Holt Bridal Couture. As it was a daytime wedding, she opted for a short dress. Plus, she says: “To incorporate something old, I had owner Penny Bellenger sew my great-grandmother’s brooch into my fascinator.” The dress was teamed with white leather heels from Gary Castles Sydney and a pair of pearl earrings from Andy’s mother, who had, in turn, received the accessories from her husband when they found out she was pregnant. Bec also held a posy of seasonal flowers by Kate Dawes Floral Design to fit with the colour palette.

Hair and makeup was by The Powder Room. “For my hair, I wanted a style that would work well with my fascinator and show off my grandmother’s brooch,” says Bec. “For the makeup, I was after a mod look – and The Powder Room did a brilliant job!” The groom and his groomsmen opted for a relaxed look, too, including tan sports jackets with black slacks, and bowties – the latter in black for the groom and pink for his groomsmen. Getting to the ceremony was no problem. “As the drive out to the venue from the Brisbane CBD was 45 minutes, I wanted to travel with a group, so had my bridesmaids, two close friends and immediate family with me and we arrived very stylishly via a mini bus!” says Bec with a laugh. The couple were blessed weather-wise for the ceremony, which was held before 120 guests. “It was a drizzly, overcast day and everyone thought the ceremony would happen indoors,” Bec recalls. “At the last minute, the sky cleared a little and, for the half-hour ceremony, the rain held off. Guest took photos of the sky to show us that there was only blue sky above us as the married couple!” Caroline Fogg from Mihaja Photography was behind the wedding photos, which were all taken on-site. Bec says: “I love all the candid shots taken during the ceremony. Caroline stayed with us for the entire time – she was brilliant.” Jenny’s Cakes crafted the couple’s simple, three-tiered wedding cake. “My mother, Janet, also provided loads of traditional Italian biscuits to eat as well!” Bec says. Andy’s ex-band mates – and his groomsmen from Platform 6 – provided much of the entertainment. After the fun of their wedding, Bec and Andy rounded things off with a relaxing beach holiday at Koh Samui in Thailand. As for tips for those seeking to tie the knot in future, Bec advises: “Leave plenty of time for photos – and maybe extend the venue time by an extra hour or two if you can!”

LOVESONG

Dedication THIS DUO HIT ALL THE RIGHT NOTES WHEN THEY CROSSED PATHS, AND THEIR WEDDING WAS A MEDLEY OF EVERYTHING THEY’RE ABOUT. PHOTOGRAPHY CAMERON LAIRD WORDS CARLA CARUSO

The nuptials of this couple were themed “garden party meets Woodstock” – apt as it was music that first drew Bree Dixon, 29, marketing officer, and Daniel Milkovic, 27, newsagent, together. Bree says: “Daniel and I met through my then roommate. We bonded over our love of music. I sing with the band, Pachooka, and Dan loves blues music!” Continuing the musical theme, Daniel proposed at a Byron Bay restaurant after organising Bree’s favourite Led Zeppelin song, Since I’ve Been Loving You, to be on. Naturally, music was incorporated at every turn on their special day, too. All the bunting, straw flags, invites and table numbers featured lyrics or names from their favourite old-school bands like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and a chalkboard read “till death do us party”. The location of their August 4 wedding was at Castaways Resort and Spa, Mission Beach. “Daniel wanted the beach and I wanted the rainforest, so it was the perfect compromise,” Bree enthuses, “and our wedding coordinator, Jess Barnett, was such a godsend.” Good friend Anna Dance crafted the invites, depicting a beautiful illustration of the couple at their favourite spot at Mission Beach. On the day, Bree wore a Mad Men-inspired, ivory, tea-length Henry Roth dress from Wedding Gowns By Melinda. “My shoes were apple green satin shoes by Nina,” she adds. “I desperately wanted green satin pumps, but could not find any in Australia, so ended up going online through Nordstrom.” The outfit was complemented by a bouquet of roses, tulips, freesias, blushing bride proteas and erlicheer daffodils from Flowers By Jenny, which had her great-grandmother’s engagement ring pinned to it. Belinda Buckley from Paraskevi International was behind the bride and her bridesmaids’ hairstyles and Portable Pampering did the make-up. The bridesmaids comprised Fred Beattie, Melody Moulang, Rhona Barr and Lara Biggs. Bree enthuses: “They have remained my closest friends for 10 years. They all wore sage green After Six dresses in different lengths. As a present, I gave all the girls a vintage spoon bracelet from the early 1900s and a set of pearls to wear.” Daniel donned a ‘50s rocker-style waistcoat and skinny tie, as well as a hat he wears to music festivals, signed by his favourite artists. The couple walked down the aisle to Led Zeppelin’s Going To California. >

mywedding Pre and post-ceremony, snaps of the bridal party were taken by Cameron Laird. “He did an amazing job and we are so happy with all our photos,” Bree says. The couple’s 120 guests then joined them for a beautiful buffet at the resort. Friend Michelle Hall was behind their red velvet wedding cake. Of course, entertainment was the one thing covered right from the start, with Pachooka providing the sweet music. “It was the first time many of my family had seen us play and they loved it! Even my 78-year-old grandmother was rocking it on the dance floor. Dan’s father and mine also love the Rolling Stones, so my bridesmaid, Lara, and I did a cover of Angie for the dads.” One of Bree’s favourite memories was lighting sky lanterns at the night’s end as part of a fire show. “But the best moment had to be when Dan got up and sang me a blues number by The Black Keys – I was so speechless and he did a great job!” The couple plan to honeymoon in Italy and Croatia next year. Bree also has some tips for future brides. “Shop around, start craft projects early and have the wedding you want to have. Oh, and really make sure your vendors detail exactly what they provide. Broad contract terms lead to misunderstandings that could easily have been cleared up at the start.” Plus, she says consider how long the photos take. “It wasn’t something I considered until the end and, looking back, I would have had the ceremony an hour earlier, so we had more time to get shots with individual friends and family.” Sage advice.

Love

IN BLOOM

LOVE BLOSSOMED BETWEEN THIS PAIR FROM THEIR VERY FIRST MEETING – AND WAS FULLY IN BLOOM ON THEIR SPECIAL DAY. PHOTOGRAPHY INSIGHT CREATIVE WORDS CARLA CARUSO

This duo wed on the first day of spring – September 1 this year – and even themed their nuptials to suit the season. Chloe Edmonds, a personal assistant, 23, says: “Our wedding colours were mainly white, blue and grey, but we wanted a bright spring feeling. So the girls had very colourful bouquets and we asked all the guests to dress accordingly!” But to backtrack a little, Chloe’s story of how she met her groom – Jonathon Healy, 28, a structural draftsperson – gives new meaning to the term, ‘blushing bride’. “We met through Jono’s dad, Jack, who used to come into my work,” she explains with a smile. “When I first met Jono, Jack and Jono’s brother, Kurtis, were also there and I said to Jack on the sly, ‘Who’s Kurtis’s friend? He’s so hot!’ To my horror, Jack replied, with a decent amount of laughter, ‘That’s my eldest boy, Jono…’ Thankfully, we have been together ever since.’ Three years later, Jonathon proposed. The groom says: “I had the ring for eight months, carting it everywhere in case of a ‘special’ moment. Finally, I took Chloe to our favourite place for dinner, followed by ice cream on the beach.” Chloe continues the story: “He was kind of lying awkwardly, with his hands in his pocket, when he decided to give me a big kiss. When I opened my eyes, I saw the ring sparkling away in his hand. I’ll never forget the look on his face – a mixture of nerves and emotion. He managed, ‘Will you marry me?’ I started crying and he teared up, which made me giggle. Then we were both laughing in each other’s arms. It was so simple, but perfect!” The pair wed at Picnic Bay on Magnetic Island before 90 guests. Chloe says: “The gown was sweep-you-off-your-feet, old-world romance style, made from a thick duchess satin, with an elegant pleated bodice and a Valentino-inspired belt, which perfectly matched my Tiffany ‘Victoria’ cluster earrings – a 21st present. A flat-front skirt, featuring double box pleats, gave it amazing volume as it fell.” Plus, Chloe adds: “A very close family friend offered to put our photos into a small gold love heart locket, which was her family heirloom, for ‘something old’. I pinned it to my very comfortable cotton knickers [laughs]!”

Chloe’s bridesmaids – Eliza Birtle, Sophy Maccallum, and Jordein Alvoen – wore custom-made dresses in a sea blue raw silk from Ultra Suite. Reds Salon and Bellanova Skin & Makeup Studio were behind the girls’ hair and makeup. Chloe adds: “I really wanted to make a statement with the flowers, so the Townsville Flower Market made us extra-large bouquets including flannel flower, waxflower, blushing bride, ranunculus and andromeda.” The groom wore a pale grey, slim-fit Country Road suit with a white Herringbone shirt and charcoal tie. He was flanked by his younger brothers, Patrick, Kurtis and Josh, in similar attire. Meanwhile, Chloe’s brothers, Zac and Jacob, drove the bridal party to the ceremony in Audis. “Seeing my baby brothers all suited up like real gentlemen, holding the doors open of our family cars, was so surreal,” Chloe remembers fondly. “I was happy and sad to have them be part of that last moment of me being an Edmonds like them.” For the reception, Michel’s Restaurant catered a magnificent sit-down, family-style dinner. Michel’s were also behind the black forest wedding cake – “Jono’s choice!” the bride says – decorated with chocolate shards and cherries. Entertainment included DJ Chanel and the Sara Shaw Band. Insight Creative was behind the stunning photography on the day. As for tips for other couples, Chloe advises: “Be yourself – choose things that truly represent you and your fiancé, whether it is the food, your clothes or the music. This way the day will feel like your very own personalised world – everything just the way you like it!”

Enchanting SIMPLY

THIS COUPLE’S ‘HAPPILY EVER AFTER’ BEGAN WITH A FAIRY-TALE CELEBRATION. PHOTOGRAPHY PETER PEACH WORDS CARLA CARUSO

This is the ultimate fairy-tale love story. The October nuptials of Kady Brandon, 26, an optometrist, and Chris Mitchell, 28, a clinical pharmacist, were themed an “enchanted fairy-tale wedding celebration”. “We used a black-and-white colour palette,” the bride enthuses. “Populins Hall in Ayr was transformed into an enchanted forest, with faux peacocks and doves perched in the branches of several trees, which my mum, Tracey Brandon, had painted by hand. Lines of sterling silver candelabras lit the tables and created an ethereal atmosphere. The room looked truly magical!” The wedding invitations by The Periwinkle Studio continued the bird and tree theme. Adding to the fairy-tale, the bride wore no less than three dresses on the day. “My formal wedding dress was my mother’s that she had worn 28 years ago,” Kady explains. “It was my dream wedding dress. My mum purchased it from Gardams in Brisbane in 1984 and Sandi Milani from Home Hill did an amazing job reshaping the dress to fit me perfectly. It is a spectacular white vintage gown with long, fitted, lace sleeves, a large full skirt and flowing train. I wore a Swarovski crystal tiara and cathedral-length veil to complete the princess look.” Kady continues: “For our first dance as husband and wife – a foxtrot choreographed by Dancensations – I changed into a blush-coloured, sequinned cocktail dress. My party frock for the remainder of the evening was an ivory, floor-length gown by Carla Zampatti. I also wore a couture millinery headpiece, created by Katherine Falco.” She also wore an antique diamond ring on her right hand. Kady explains: “The ring was given to me by my late grandfather before he passed away, so was a very sentimental, special accessory.” The ceremony took place at the Sacred Heart Parish and the reception at Populins Hall, both in the small town of Ayr. Kady says: “Chris and I both grew up in Ayr, almost around the corner from one another,

in fact! Truth be known, I secretly fancied Chris during our school years. However, we did not properly meet until 2010. I was living in Brisbane at the time and Chris in Townsville. I returned to Ayr to visit my family at Easter, and Chris took the opportunity to ask me out to dinner while I was back. We have been together ever since!” The bridesmaids wore black, deluxe silk-satin, floor-length gowns by Charlie Brown, all in varying styles. The flower girls wore white, ballet-inspired tutus. Malpara Florist was behind the bouquets. Meanwhile, Chris wore a black, slim-fit Hugo Boss suit with a white Herringbone shirt, black skinny silk tie, and a wedding gift from the bride: personalised monogram sterling silver cufflinks from Tiffany & Co. His groomsmen were similarly attired. The photography by Peter Peach continued the fairy-tale theme. “The images included signs explaining our fairy-tale: ‘Once upon a time’ and ‘They lived happily ever after. The End’, as well as a shot of Chris putting on my modern-day Christian Louboutin ‘Cinderella’ glass slipper!” Kady enthuses. Michel’s Restaurant catered the reception and Alisha Tortorica from Home Hill crafted the five-tiered wedding cake, comprising white chocolate mud cake and vanilla fondant icing. The couple honeymooned at Qualia on Hamilton Island and Tranquility Base on Magnetic Island. As for tips for future brides and grooms, Kady says: “Try to plan your wedding around things that are important to you as a couple – this for us was tradition and family. Staying happy and relaxed is also imperative. The important part of a wedding is the marriage. On the day, try to take time to appreciate and enjoy what will ultimately be one of the most amazing days of your life!”

It’s a warm, lush evening in Nusa Dua. The sweet scent of frangipani flowers fills the air within the walls of Bali’s most romantic five-star resort, The Balé.

Somewhere in the distance a traditional gamelan is being played, the chiming notes echoing softly between the trees. The lamps are being lit and love is in the air. Behind the closed doors of the sumptuous villas, honeymooners are luxuriating in their private pools, taking a last dip before showering for supper. From the resort lobby guests can gaze on the resort’s broad central avenue of white-stone stairs that climb gracefully to the main pool. Paper lanterns, placed on each stair, make the warm stones glow and add a touch of magic to the scene. For a second the honeymooners imagine they are in a Moorish palace in southern Spain, or a sheikh’s desert residence in the Arabian Gulf but the gamelan and the never-faltering smiles of the Balinese staff remind them that they are in one of the most exotic places on earth, the Island of the Gods.

HONEYMOON

The pool area adjacent to Faces Restaurant

Early diners arrive at Faces Restaurant preparing to indulge in delicious gourmet meals by candlelight. There are crisp white tablecloths and cooling cucumber martinis. Some have booked ahead to secure one of the exclusive and discreet tables next to the sublime pool where they dine under a vast arc of tropical stars. These blissful few hours around sundown are the most reverential in Bali, when the heat of the day has passed and the promise of night comes on apace. The Balé captures and accentuates the romance perfectly, allowing guests to celebrate their union in dramatic splendour. It is bewitching. All around the resort there is tranquility and a respectful hush.

136 duo bride + honeymoons

The impeccably trained staff soft-foot between tables, delivering divine dishes, replenishing champagne glasses and giving enchanted guests just the right amount of privacy and attention. They politely inquire as to the day’s activities; they ask if the swim was good at the beach club that afternoon, if guests found the sarong they were searching for in the markets and if they need spa treatment tips for tomorrow. But they know their limits and they know when to retreat and leave a couple in peace. It’s a rare skill to have mastered that ebb and flow of service but The Balé’s management company, Lifestyle Retreats, has perfected it.

The waiters and personal butlers (every villa has one) are adept at reading their guests’ moods and desires. They are more than staff members, they are part of The Balé family, and the effect of this camaraderie is powerful: guests feel not just respected but cherished. There can be few more handsome and architecturally exciting five-star hotels in the world, and none as romantic for honeymooners.

Deluxe Pavilion bedroom

The Balé has only recently re-opened after a major refurbishment and has retained its exclusive and individual style, offering villa compounds rather than rooms. Each compound has its own delicious freshwater pool and peaceful, landscaped garden. The villas are big, starting with 240sqm Single Pavilions, and combine modern minimalist style with great attention to detail. There is intricate stonework and beautiful traditional Balinese roof designs. There are comfy sofas with window-seats, showers both indoors and out, a large and inviting bed sitting on its own terrazzo base and – essential for any honeymoon destination – a bath that two lovers can enjoy comfortably together.

138 duo bride + honeymoons

Each villa is equipped with modern technology and some personal treats such as boxes of handmade fragrant Balinese soaps, flavoured with frangipani, ylang-ylang and other local flowers, herbs and spices. The Balé has also retained and enhanced its reputation as one of Asia’s best wellness resorts with a fabulous spa offering an eclectic menu of couples’ treatments from around the world, and a spa food menu focusing on light, healthy meals and drinks. The spa food is available for all guests, whether they are partaking of spa treatments or not.

By midnight the last of the diners have retreated to their villas, strolling hand-inhand along the walkways and feeling the stone walls still comfortingly warm from the day’s sun. And so to bed, to dream dreams of ocean breezes and romantic walks along the soft Nusa Dua sand, and to look forward to another day in paradise.
