PORTOBELLO ROAD Jenny’s day-to-evening look was created by airbrushing an evolve foundation to give a flawless finish followed with a transparent veil. to give the amazing smoky eyes an edge, arbonne cabernet with vanilla and a hint of gold were used and accentuated with black liquid liner. to add glow to this chic look, a petal-coloured blush was applied and the whole look was finished with a dark-peach lipstick and high-shine gloss by napoleon.

PORTOBELLO ROAD Jenny’s hair was first double-moussed with gHD Maximize Mousse and blowdried with a paddle brush to introduce volume. it was then barrel set using gHD’s classic styler. after the pins were removed, the hair was loosened and backed-brushed into the desired shape. to go from out to up, it was brushed back into a ponytail, leaving out the front and top section. the ponytail was then twisted into a knot and pinned to secure. the front and top sections were backcombed for added volume and support, brushed smoothed, set into the desired shape and pinned into a knot. gHD ultimate Finishing spray was applied for hold and reflection spray for added shine.

FrOM MY deSk sometimes i have to question just who is running the place in Canberra. i do not know what their motives are and what they are trying to achieve – except to get right up my nose! with the independents asking for more Private Members time in the new paradigm, the thought was that the sitting calendar for Parliament this year would be extended. instead, we find that it has been trimmed to 18 weeks of the year. now, you will not hear me whinge about having to miss more time in Canberra – it is a lovely place, honestly. it also gives me more time in my electorate working on the ground for my constituents. But the weeks in which they have chosen to sit leave me questioning. when i used to run Pickles auctions and the way i did my calendar (because our auction day was always on a tuesday) was to think about my buyers. the last thing they wanted was to be stuck in an auction while the Melbourne Cup was running. so i made sure that our shortest auction day of the year was on Melbourne Cup day. that meant that i could get the auction done and still make the functions – i mean they, because it was not about me. so i pull out the 2011 Parliament sitting calendar and immediately check off the most important days and notably on Melbourne Cup Day we will be just starting Question time!!! i know what my question will be. who came up with this idea and why am i the only one here? we are not sitting on valentine’s Day so i will be home and available. what were they thinking? Both of my readers will remember my feelings about this day – it was invented by florists and Cadbury Chocolates with the express wish to make me feel that i have not done enough. if i was in Canberra i would be able to say “love you, miss you, what a pity i am away otherwise i would do something spectacular”. i am oK for the aFl grand Final but have not checked to see if i have to travel on nrl grand final night – that would be the end of civilisation as we know it. For now, i am off to start planning my valentine’s Day escapade – oh the pain. and i can’t wait for February 8, when the first Parliamentary sitting day of the year is held. 13

BOrn CLASSiC THOUGHTFULLY BLENDING PRACTICALITY AND GOOD LOOKS WITH SUSTAINABILITY, DEKA FURNITURE OWNERS LASSE AND HELENA KINNUNEN ARE MOVING THE AGE-OLD CRAFT OF FURNITURE MAKING INTO THE FUTURE.

in a world of mass production, waste and one-size-fits all, it is inspiring to stumble across an old-school family furniture company that focuses on both tradition and sustainability. lasse and Helena Kinnunen, the couple behind Brisbane-based Deka Furniture, have spent more than three decades creating quality, innovative, culturally relevant and environmentally responsible furniture. their stylish and practical pieces are for design-savvy customers who consider furniture not as disposable or purely functional but as an artistic statement that should last forever. Deka’s standard collection neatly sums up the company’s essence; titled Born Classic the collection signifies pieces that will last and become classics in their lifetime. “we have kept the tradition of high quality craft as the basis of our work,” explains lasse. “we don’t really know any other way to do things. we are often confronted with options to upscale our manufacturing, increase outsourcing and increase productivity, but both Helena and i feel that the origin of what we do would be lost.” growing up in Finland, lasse learnt the craft of furniture as a young boy in his parents’ furniture company. “i saw how good furniture was made and what techniques ensured longevity. Finland was rich with european antiques and they were very much valued,” he shares. “My earliest memory as a child in the furniture workshop was my own attempt at upholstering, hitting tacks into a small wooden chair, which was given to my father by his grandfather,” recalls lasse. “when our daughter nora was young she did the same thing. that chair is now here in australia and i’m hoping my grandson will appreciate the family value in it.” 18

after meeting in Helsinki in the early ‘70s, lasse and Helena moved to australia later that decade, with initial intentions of a two-year stay. “we were young, with a young child, and were looking for an adventure,” explains lasse. More than 30 years on and the Kinnunen’s are still calling Queensland home. originally based on the gold Coast, lasse and Helena spent the ‘80s and ‘90s developing their furniture company before relocating the business to Brisbane in 2000. that same year, nora left her career as an aeronautical engineer to join the family business. all agree that nora has been the catalyst for shifting the company towards new concepts for sustainable ways of life. “i am using experience, from engineering and design, and knowledge of sustainability issues to develop product ranges that are more about how we will live in the future,” tells nora. “australia’s growing unsustainable material culture is a concern that we take very seriously,” she continues. “and we believe we can have a positive impact through promoting value in better, more sustainable options. we try very hard to advocate high quality design and manufacture, not only for an environmentally sensitive option but also for a culturally relevant option.” it is the Kinnunen’s thoughtful use of materials as well as the functionality of the designs and their striking aesthetic that has won them recognition. lasse was awarded the arts Queensland smart state Designer of the Year 2006 by the Design institute of australia (Dia), and both lasse and Helena have been finalists for the Dia Queensland Design awards. For Deka Furniture, the future is looking sharp. they have a loyal band of architects and interior designers who use their custom-made service, their pieces are functional, beautiful collector’s items and their ethos is in line with what tomorrow’s world demands. reputation, reliability and responsibility – what more could you ask for in a chair? However, there is nothing like a shopping hit in a busy city, like shanghai or new York! the energy is so fast-paced and you will always find something new to inspire you. SinGinG A diFFerenT TUne WHILE MOST UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PAY THEIR WAY THROUGH STUDY BY FLIPPING BURGERS OR WORKING IN RETAIL, SONGSTRESS CATIE MICHELLE HAS BUILT A NAME FOR HERSELF ON THE STAGE, HER DEEP BLUESY TONE ENTERTAINING AUDIENCES AROUND TOWNSVILLE. BUT THE TALENTED SINGER WILL SOON TRADE THE SPOTLIGHT IN FOR HER TRUE CALLING – PROBING INTO THE DARK RECESSES OF THE CRIMINAL MIND. while singing rock, blues and country favourites may not seem to naturally fit with criminology upon first glance, they have certainly been a perfect marriage for bubbly townsville girl Catie Michelle. Catie (born Caitlyn Michelle wignall, but modified her name to a more stagefriendly option) grew up on Magnetic island where she says she had a magical childhood, largely behaving like she was “little orphan annie” and entertaining passengers on the ferry service with her enthusiastic renditions. it was only when her family moved to the mainland when she was 10 that she formally started singing lessons, which eventually lead her onto the public stage – first starring in musicals, and then graduating to regular appearances at pubs like the royal Hotel. “singing is my hobby, passion and job and i love the special experience i get at gigs,” the winsome 21-year-old says, who admits she takes on a different persona on-stage and enters “Catie-land”. “a lot of the people i meet ask what i do, and when i tell them i’m just about finished my criminology degree and hope to get into the police force to do crime scene and criminal profiling they do a double take. it’s like when my uni lecturers see me perform – they say ‘wow, so this is what you do’ – it’s funny when those two worlds collide.” Catie admits that although she has been singing all her life, she hasn’t always been comfortable on stage – in the early days she used to get wracked by nerves, but over the years the butterflies have flown and performing is now when she feels most comfortable. although the stage and the police force are streets apart, the die-hard van Morrison

fan says the life experience she has gained will assist on her new career path. “i think my specific life experience will help because i’m always interacting with people and the public and talking to people i don’t know – i used to find that confronting, but now i’ve grown into it… i’ve always been drawn to know why people do what they do and want to be involved in the process of catching the bad guy!” Catie had her first real taste of her new career last year when she was involved with a 12-month research project for townsville City Council to study fear and perception of crime in townsville, which revealed positive results for the city she says is “going places” and hopes to call home for years to come: “i have a fantastic mum, dad and son – i call him my son, but he’s actually a three-year-old Maltese Poodle called romeo – and my bird Humphrey. i’m also lucky to have great friends in townsville and i still use my background in childcare to help out some beautiful kids through a good friend who’s a disability care worker.” once Catie enters the police force – a move she hopes to make this year after doing some further training at taFe – she’s uncertain of what will happen to her on-stage career in the face of an ever-growing schedule, but knows there’s no way her passion can be totally gagged. “singing will always be a part of my life – even if it’s just performing for friends and family,” she smiles. “i love it and i love getting people involved.”

Solving Selective Hearing

seleCtive Hearing is a CoMMon CoMPlaint aMongst Many CoUPles, PartiCUlarly ConCerning tHe Male Half and tHeir sPoUses.

Although we may all joke about it, selective hearing is actually a very real complaint. Not in such a way that some people are selective about what they are hearing, but in that there are particular voices people with a hearing loss find difficulty with. The most common type of hearing loss amongst males over 35 is noise-induced hearing loss – more commonly known as industrial deafness. This particular ailment occurs due to prolonged exposure to unsafe levels of noise such as tractors, heavy machinery, rifles or trucks, for example. Initially exposure to dangerous levels of noise causes a temporary loss of hearing, which is usually accompanied by ringing sounds in the ears (tinnitus). The ringing sounds are caused by the tiny hairs (cilia) within the inner ear being flattened by the acoustic trauma. Because of the design of the inner ear (cochlear) the hairs responsible for high-pitched sounds receive the brunt of the acoustic impact and are effected the most, thus the perception of highpitched ringing. Eventually the hairs return to their original position, the hearing returns

and tinnitus recedes. However, when the ear is subject to this acoustic trauma frequently the tiny hairs within the inner ear will begin to die away and the hearing loss and tinnitus becomes permanent. The permanent damage begins with the highpitched areas – there is usually no noticeable effects on the low-pitched areas of the inner ear. Consequently someone with industrial deafness may have exceptional hearing in the low pitches, so they can hear a car or plane coming from miles away, yet their mobile phone may be ringing in their pocket and they can’t hear it. With speech it’s also only the high-pitched areas that are initially affected, such as the beginnings and ends of words. If you remove these parts from speech then you remove all the clarity and it can sound like everyone is mumbling, or you can hear people talking but not understand what they are saying. Female and children’s voices are harder to pick up because they are of a higher pitch and more speech sounds are affected. This is where the term “selective hearing” is relevant as someone with industrial deafness

may be able to hear a male voice no problem at all due to the lower-pitched voice, yet their female partner or children have to repeat themselves several times over. This is particularly pertinent when their back is turned or talking from another room as all visual strategies that we unconsciously use to accommodate for a hearing loss, such as lip reading, are lost. Consequently the wife and children get frustrated because they feel their partner or parent is not listening to them specifically, and the husband gets frustrated because they feel their partner or children are mumbling. Fortunately with modern technology industrial deafness is now one of the easiest hearing losses to treat. Clients frequently say I have probably saved more marriages than any marriage counsellor!

If you’ve been unfortunate enough to lose some teeth over the years, you’ll understand the functional and aesthetic loss that has occurred to you since losing your teeth. I see many people who’ve lost back molars due to amalgam fractures, abscesses and failed root fillings. The loss of your molars will lead to a change in your bite pattern as teeth are dynamic structures. This can give rise to TMJ (jaw) problems, gum disease affecting adjacent teeth and – the biggest problem – the loss of available bone. Not to mention the aesthetic crisis of not having a front tooth! This can be very stressful for my patients and myself, the dentist, who has the responsibility to treat and provide an ideal, complete outcome. Available bone for implant placement is crucial for long-term success. Once a tooth is removed, this initiates the bone remodelling process whereby bone that is no longer required is lost and the window of opportunity slowly closes within 12 months to place an implant. In the first 12 months after tooth loss, 30 per cent of the initial bone will be lost. This complicates implant outcomes due to the

need for bone grafting. One procedure that I find successful is a technique called socket grafting, which augments bone at the time of tooth removal. In ideal conditions this is very effective. The important message here is to start planning your implant success story before you lose your tooth. The implants we use at Casey Dentists are made from titanium alloy, which is strong, long-lasting and highly biocompatible with human tissue. It replaces the root portion of the tooth and, once placed, is left undisturbed to integrate with the jaw bone. Once the bone has bonded with the implant it can be loaded and restored with the most appropriate restoration. For a missing tooth, we would place a porcelain crown on top of the implant, for multiple missing teeth we would either place a porcelain bridge, which is fixed in place, or an over-denture that clips onto the implant head. This latter option has revolutionised the way we restore people’s jaws who have no teeth. Do you believe what your kid is watching and playing on the computer is okay, even though you know it’s violent? Think they are immune to it? Well now’s the time to think again. Researchers have known for a good 20 years that allowing children to watch and play violent video games actually increases their aggression. Yet little is it talked about or examined. There seems to be an ‘Oh it’s okay, it doesn’t affect them’ attitude. The problem with kids watching or playing violent video games is that when they become upset, instead of calming themselves, talking about it or crying, they externalise it – they attack something, kick a wall or be mean to a pet. We all know how kids copy people around them. You hear them say a phrase just like you do and you do a bit of self-reflection – it’s the same with violent video games. Psychologists have shown that violent game-playing kids become less caring and helpful to other kids at a time in their childhood when they should be learning healthy ways to relate to others and how to resolve conflicts peacefully. Also there are no moral consequences in a video game. In real life there are negative outcomes for being aggressive, while in video gaming world you usually get bonus points for violent behaviour. Now let’s talk teenagers as they are not immune either. The teenage brain is in the midst of a growth spurt and a very impressionable period in their life. According to the National Institute on Media and the Family: “Just when teens are wiring the circuits for self-control, responsibility and relationships that they will carry with them into adulthood, violent games activate their anger centre while dampening the brain’s “conscience”. Hmm… not exactly setting them up for a good future in relationships. How can parents minimise any potential harm? Psychologists have found that when parents limit the amount of time as well as the types of games their children play, children are less likely to show aggressive behaviours. Did you know that the average time spent playing video/computer games for a boy is 13 hours per week compared to five hours for a girl? I recommend renting a game and playing it yourself before buying it for your child. Gaming websites also usually have descriptions and a little trailer – do some research before you buy. One more point to mention – parent peer pressure. That is, when other kids’ parents let them play violent video games, you feel bad if you say ‘No I don’t think it is appropriate’, so you relent to the pressure. When I talk to parents about this, I find that many are very concerned about what their children are watching and playing but go along with it because other parents do. But in fact, other parents do because other parents do! It’s a vicious cycle and needs someone to stand up and say “Well actually, no”. Your kids will get over you saying no. They won’t get over the affects of violent video games. Pull out the board games or go for a walk together instead.

Do I change my name? For some brides-to-be, the hardest part oF walking down that aisle is deciding what to be called once you reach the end.

I’ve been sporting a gorgeous round brilliant-cut diamond on my left ring finger for well over 15 months now, and unlike most brides who would probably have made that trip down the aisle, been on their honeymoon and posted their thank you cards by now, I haven’t even set a date. In fact, I can’t even decide whether to take my husband’s name. According to EasyNameChange.com.au, since the mid ‘90s approximately 85 per cent of Australian brides still choose to take their husband’s name. That leaves 15 per cent who keep their own name, hyphenate their name, or use a combination of names such as their own name professionally and their husband’s name on their driver’s licence and passport. For many women, having one surname for husband, wife and children is part of being a family, of being one unit. Samantha, 23, who is planning an August wedding, says she will take her partner’s name. “My parents never married so I grew up with a different name to my mum. I would get taunted at school with kids saying ‘you must be adopted,’” shares Samantha. “I found it difficult to understand why they would think that, and hard to explain to them why I had a different surname. I don’t want that for my children.” There is no doubt having one family surname would make dealing with schools, airports and even other parents a whole lot easier, but for me, giving up my name is a lot more complicated.

For one thing, I feel like my name is part of my identity. I understand that who you are is in no way defined by just a name and taking your husband’s name can be a symbolic start to a new life. But I’ve had that name since the day I was born; it’s been my name through all of my major milestones, and it will always be the name printed across my degree. Also, as one of four sisters with no male cousins on my father’s side, my sisters and I are, in a way, ‘the end of the line’. Donna, 38, has two children aged 7 and 5, a husband, a professional career and the same name she has had since she was born. “I spent many years before getting married building my career in an industry where my name has been a large part of my professional identity,” says Donna. “I’ve never had any problems with my choice; my children are yet to experience issues at school, but when or if they do, we will deal with it.” Marriage celebrant Amanda Medill has performed close to 350 services during her five-and-a-half years as a celebrant in Townsville. “I would say around 95 per cent of couples I have married took the husband’s name,” explains Amanda. “When we discuss the name changing process most of the women don’t even consider any other option. It’s the traditional option and it works for most couples. For the other five per cent, I have found the women keep their own name mainly because of their professional reputation. They may be doctors or academics with published works under their name, for example.”

Amanda recalls only two cases where the husband changed his name to a shared hyphenated name. “In these cases, both of the couples each had children together before they were married and the children already had the hyphenated name. So the parents each took that name.” I know my husband-to-be would never even entertain the idea of taking my surname, or hyphenating our names, so I think this is a decision many women would face alone. (Not that I would ever hyphenate our names – his name is already hyphenated and three surnames with two hyphens would just be cruel.) For me, I feel my name is my name and it will stay my name. I have a son who has his father’s surname, and a husband-to-be who supports my decision regardless. And if I change my mind, I can always change my name too.

He said he wanted to build a little fishing shack on it and got down on one knee to show me how he thought we would position the shack on the block and proceeded to write “Will you marry me?” in the dirt.
