WELCOME
ALL THE ONE’S... ISSUE ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN My wife (and advisor on all matters) Stacey suggested that producing our 111th issue is a big deal and I should write about it. And she’s right of course. I’m very grateful to the people who, over the past 111 issues, have graciously given their time and energy and, in some cases, stories to make DUO a really great read. But the thing I’m intrigued with regarding this 111th issue is all the one’s. Stacey’s research revealed that, if you continually see the numbers 1, 11, 111, or 1111, there’s a reason. The most common way that angels communicate with humans is through the universal languages of numbers and music. 1, 11, 111, and 1111 in Angel Numbers all mean: “Keep your thoughts positive, because your thoughts are manifesting instantly into form. Focus only upon your desires and not upon your fears.” So, Angel Numbers are a shorthand code between you and your angels. In the case of 1’s, they represent the post of an energy gateway. The more 1s you see, the stronger the path is. As well, the number 111 is sometimes called “a Nelson” after Admiral Nelson, who allegedly only had “One Eye, One Arm, One Leg” near the end of his life. (Which is not correct - Nelson never lost a leg.) 111 is also the atomic number of the element roentgenium (Rg), the emergency telephone number in New Zealand and is referred to as “eleventy-one” in The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien. I seem to mostly look at digital clocks at precisely 11:11. Now I didn’t make this next bit up. But if it says good things about me then I’m all for it. Apparently “Eleven is a master number in numerology, and connotes a spiritual path. Many believe that 11:11 is a confirmation that you are a lightworker or earth angel, here to uplift human consciousness and restore a sense of oneness and harmony to the world. You are a bridge, someone who can bring together people from disparate factions of society, or weave together opposing energies into a beautiful blend.” For more on this check out www.astrostyle.com/master-numbers/ And that all comes from seeing 11:11 on digital clocks. Wow a whole story! Hope you enjoy your 111th issue of DUO Magazine! SCOTT MORRISON | PUBLISHER

HOROSCOPE
22 JULY – 22 AUGUST
This birthday season coincides with a major turning point – a time when you’re free to attract whatever you please. For some, new business or travel opportunities arise. Others enjoy the pleasures of requited romance. Just be wary of overly dependent companions, particularly those who would happily fritter away your hard earned cash.

23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER
23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER
23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER
22 NOVEMBER - 21 DECEMBER
August brings a romantic treasure hunt, but as delightful as a new love can be – don’t lose your Virgo pragmatism. Also, stay alert to the risks of rekindled passions. Nostalgia may not only cloud your judgment, but leave you a tad too misty-eyed. At work, too, contracts and negotiations are just as contradictory, so take care.
Here’s a month to be a tad selfish, Libra. Why shouldn’t you let a few “me first” thoughts run through that overly-compliant head of yours? Of course, striking out may not come easily. You can all-tooeasily be at the constant mercy of others’ whims. It’s time to follow your own path. You may just learn to love it.
Sometimes the least amount of effort brings the greatest rewards. You can, of course, thank the cosmos for some of this good fortune, but take some credit for your ability to impress. You now have an immaculate sense of timing that seems to steer everything your way. And it’s not all talk. You also deliver the goods.
As much as you’d like to retain stability, the cosmos plans otherwise. Mayhem follows, but in the most auspicious way. This is your time for discovering that change can in fact bring extraordinary blessings. If offered an advantage, don’t hesitate. This month’s window of opportunity won’t re-open again for some time.

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL
At the moment, everyone has an opinion of what you should do. Perhaps you’re feeling unsettled at home or work. A bit of soul searching is required, Capricorn. Sure, you can seek out advice, but the bottom line is that you really need to accept who you are – and like what you find. Maybe a short retreat will help you sort things out.
Here’s a month when financial alarm bells start to ring, so it’s time for a major rethink. First, you should curb those spending habits. Next, reject any too-goodto-be-true offers – because they probably are. Thankfully, romance looks less of a gamble. In this area, you can be as exuberant as you please.
The Piscean ideal is a world of equality and peace. And yet somehow even the best of us can become entangled in life’s complex web from time to time. Success could be yours for the taking right now, but is it to be at another’s expense? So unlike you. Thankfully, your love life looks less complicated.
Just what you need: more disruption. But the planets insist that change is the go – so don’t cling too dearly to what in your heart you know is outmoded. After the 22nd, life turns towards a happier course. Along with professional progress, expect a shower of money, gifts or material gain.

21 APRIL – 20 MAY
21 MAY – 21 JUNE
22 JUNE - 22 JULY
Reassess which aims are worth pursuing and which aren’t, then discard anything that’s become a source of adversity. Throw ideas around with other like minds – if nothing else, the social contact will ease any fears. Indeed, August suggests safety in numbers – so gather together all your friends, colleagues and family, and regroup.
Recent months have thrown you from pillar to post. Mind, body and soul all felt the force of radical transformation. Some Geminis have been at the end of enforced career changes. Others have had relationships disintegrate, or not happen at all. Perhaps you’re to blame, perhaps not. Leave the past where it belongs.
It’s OK, Cancer. We know all about those defiant passions that lurk beneath your sensitive veneer. Last month offered the chance to free up some of that hidden fervour, but many of you kept a handle on things. August pushes even harder for inner desires to be set free. Such daring has been a long time coming.

TERI HUMPHREYS TOWNSVILLE EARTHMOVING
Teri Humphreys admires the vision that her father Bill had when the family relocated here from Papua New Guinea. It was the 1970s and Bill boldly jumped into new projects to drive the city’s growth, like helping to transform the old trotting track into what is now 1300SMILES Stadium. Teri joined him in business in the mid 1980s, eventually taking the reins, and the proud Townsvillian is just as optimistic about Townsville’s advancement.
Did you always plan to follow in your father’s footsteps? I have been in construction all my life and have been taught by some of the best. I returned to Townsville from working in Brisbane in 1986 to manage my father’s business. He didn’t offer me the job, he simply said, “You know, you could run this business… when can you start?” My first task was to tell the person I was replacing that he no longer had a job. Also, my position wasn’t guaranteed — it was dependant on me generating a wage, which, thankfully, didn’t take me long. Some say Dad’s mentoring methods were questionable, but I’m still thanking him for believing in me. What is the biggest coming of age you’ve seen in Townsville? Townsville is still coming to terms with being ‘one city’, but projects like City Lane are visionary culture changes that are being made by active Townsville investors. These projects are the foresight of developers who continue to champion growth and leadership here. What’s your vision for Townsville? To see our diverse economy attract investment and transform — the opportunities are endless. I also have a second vision for Townsville: To see the Cowboys win the 2015 Telstra Grand Final. Get on the bus — it’s going to be a hell of a ride!
Which of your projects has created the biggest impact on the city? We have been involved in contracting around regional Queensland for a long time now, however our own projects have all been in Townsville. Our residential subdivisions play a key role in providing affordable living and ongoing community investment. I am proud of all three we are currently developing: Bushland Park, Northbeach and the final stage of Forest Shores. It is something that will be there forever. What’s next? I am living in a beautiful part of Queensland and I am excited about what the future holds for Townsville and looking forward to investing in plenty of future projects.

MARK ADAMS NORTHERN MANAGEMENT GROUP
A passionate advocate of Townsville since moving here in high school, Mark Adams has enjoyed a number of different careers, including hospitality and media, but has found his true drive in development, and being part of the growth of the CBD in particular.
What is your biggest lesson as a developer so far? To understand that, for any city to improve, development must occur. By its nature, development is visible, involves change, and often stirs strong opinions. However, often the most vocal critic is not actually interested in or impacted by the outcome. The goal is to deliver results that benefit all. Why are you so passionate about rejuvenating and growing the city heart in particular? Every properly functioning city around the world has a successful CBD. If you live in Kirwan or North Shore, you still benefit from having a CBD that you can be proud of. In the same way The Strand was viewed before it was renovated, people underestimate the flow on effect that a successful Townsville CBD brings to their city and their lives.
What legacy do you want to leave? Development activity is one of the key drivers of any economy. Consider just one single house: Individual trades are employed for each element of the house and each purchases their supplies from someone. There is the solicitor, the real estate agent and the media that runs the ad to sell it. Each employs staff, pays ongoing taxes and rates to governments, who then are able to deliver services back to the community. If my efforts can be part of making that circle happen, deliver a building or two that provides a use and improves some public space, or if I can ‘re-life’ an existing property so it comes back to use and service for another 20 years, then maybe I am doing something worthwhile.
What are your hopes and vision for Townsville? I hope we allow our city to progress step-by-step from being such a good city to live in to becoming a GREAT city. I think most people would know of several friends or family who have left or who spend lots of time in other centres — to me that is such a loss for us. We need a city attractive to others but, importantly, one that allows us to retain our local talent. I’m a dad. I like the thought that my daughter can have opportunities and options right here in Townsville rather than moving away. And I believe many parents feel the same way.
“I’M A DAD. I LIKE THE THOUGHT THAT MY DAUGHTER CAN HAVE OPPORTUNITIES AND OPTIONS RIGHT HERE IN TOWNSVILLE RATHER THAN MOVING AWAY” MARK ADAMS

JOE GEDOUN GEDOUN PROPERTY GROUP
As a second-generation builder Joe Gedoun was brought up with the understanding that doing a job with integrity was crucial because it could make or break your name. While the family business no longer builds them “one at a time”, having evolved into one of Townsville’s most recognised builders, Joe is proud to say that he still visits every single house or building they create; fully aware of his responsibility to help shape Townsville’s residential landscape.
What was it like growing up with a father as a builder? Weekends and school holidays were spent onsite helping out and evenings were for drawing plans. We’d use the afternoons to prepare equipment and prefabricate steelwork for the next day. I was very fortunate to learn a variety of trades through my father, as we would often build one house at a time, from start to finish. In saying that, I was never ‘supposed’ to be a builder — my parents said it was too hard on the body and I should use my brains to make a living instead. My dream was to be a structural engineer, but that ended when I wasn’t accepted into university for two years running. What were your earliest business lessons? My parents worked very hard to provide for our family and I realised that, to get things you wanted, you really had to work for them. At the end of a job you had to look back and be proud of what you’d built, because your name depended on it. My dad used to say ‘Your name is everything’ — if you have a bad name, you have nothing. What are your hopes and your vision for Townsville? I’d like to see the Townsville population grow at a rate higher than what’s projected. In order for Townsville to get its fair share of state government funds we need critical mass — with critical mass comes services and infrastructure: better roads, more flights, more industry, more jobs and an increase in minimum wages. If you add to this the perfect weather conditions and wonderful people, Townsville will become one of Australia’s best-kept secrets. If it isn’t already…
Which of your projects has created the biggest impact on the city? I would say our current developments adjacent to The Precinct in Fairfield Waters — a mixture of residential and retail tenancies. But what I’m most proud of is the number of families we’ve built homes for. We’ve become one of the most successful homebuilders in all of the major land developments and suburbs to-date. We take great pride in knowing that we have helped shape the residential landscape in Townsville and hope to do so for a very long time.

JOE GOICOECHE A MENDI CONSTRUCTIONS
Having moved to North Queensland in the 1930s to flee the Spanish Civil War, Joe Goicoechea has built a successful civil construction company from the ground-up, playing a part in key projects like the original earthworks at Lavarack Barracks and acquiring and developing the entire suburb of Bushland Beach. Now 82, Joe only recently fully-retired from family company Mendi Constructions.
Tell us about your background and how you discovered development? I was born in the Basque region of Spain in 1933 and I arrived in Australia with my family in 1938 to escape the Spanish Civil War. I was educated in Ayr, and then trained as a cadet draftsman with the Inkerman Sugar Mill. I then decided to do my associate diploma in civil engineering, so moved to Townsville in 1950. I took up a position with McIntyre and Associates and worked in Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Burketown and Richmond. Working in these areas, I developed the professional know-how and expertise to move onto major redevelopment and key road projects in the region. What did you do with that knowledge? After 10 years, I started my own company, Vasco Constructions, undertaking work on the Mount Isa and Cloncurry Airports, plus Mount Isa Mines and Main Roads. I moved back to Townsville in 1965, renaming the business Goicoechea Constructions and working on major earthworks for Lavarack Barracks, Main Roads and Charters Towers Airport– key projects for the region at the time. Annandale Estate established the-now-Mendi Constructions in the land development market, and then–with some partners–we purchased Bushland Beach. I eventually bought the partners out, developed the suburb and built Ocean Palms Resort, which had been a dream of mine. Since then the company has flourished and is now a key player in the civil construction industry in North Queensland.
What makes Townsville the place where you want to live? It has always been home as most of my family are here and they are extremely important to me. I’m pleased to say I’ve been able to contribute to the community over the years, including voluntarily undertaking the earthworks at the North Queensland Cowboys’ stadium with help from friends and peers, and later becoming a foundation director on the Cowboys’ board. What are your hopes and ultimate vision for Townsville? I see a tremendously bright future for Townsville with strong population growth over the past decade, which will eventually lead to more employment opportunities, and more development and growth for the city. Townsville is a great place to be.

PETER HONE YCOMBE HONEYCOMBES PROPERTY GROUP
The pull towards hard work and community can be traced through Peter Honeycombe’s family tree. Peter’s widowed paternal grandmother went into business providing meals to railway workers in Ayr in 1913 and his mum’s father was chairman of the Burdekin Shire Council (Mayor) in the 1950s helping to deliver key infrastructure like the Burdekin Bridge and Burdekin Dam. In 1979 his father started a real estate firm in Townsville which bore the seed that Peter used to generate Honeycombes Property Group in the early 1990s to service North Queensland’s flourishing community. Sharing his family’s vision, while Peter deals in the built form, it’s really about building so much more.
Spending your formative years in Ayr, what did you dream you’d become when you ‘grew up’? I was fortunate to go to boarding school when I was 12 years old and saw a wide variety of career successes and failures. Like all children, I had lots of aspirations and dreams. My career dreams were as extreme as a fire fighter to a Christian priest. How much has the business pioneering of your family affected you? It’s been a big driver for me, but I have also aspired to their keen focus on the needs of the local community and their passion for North Queensland. What are your hopes and your vision for Townsville? There is a fine balance between the service and financial benefits of growth towards a big city and protecting the regional amenity all Townsvillians cherish. It will be fantastic if Townsville can grow with this balance in mind. Which of your projects has created the biggest impact on the city? I am extremely proud of all our projects, but in particular, our focus on the rejuvenation of the CBD of Townsville. Without significant inclusion of residential apartments in the CBD our community will not have the whole-of-day activity in the city centre that’s expected of it. This principle has been proved in most cities around the world. Metro Quays, completed in August 2000, was our first in the CBD and now — 15 years later — we are building on this with the staged $450-million development of the old rail yards.
24 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2015 duomagazine.com.au
Tell us more about this current development. Central’s vision is to provide a village within the CBD that will help enhance the city centre’s activity through 700 apartments, offices, shops, entertainment and dining experiences. What makes Townsville the place where you want to live? We have the perfect lifestyle and some amazing entertainment on offer, but most of all, Townsville is supportive of a cohesive family environment and I love bringing mine up here.
“MOST OF ALL, TOWNSVILLE IS SUPPORTIVE OF A COHESIVE FAMILY ENVIRONMENT AND I LOVE BRINGING MINE UP HERE” PETER HONEYCOMBE

L AURENCE L ANCINI LANCINI PROPERTY AND DEVELOPMENT
There’s no doubt the Lancini name is synonymous with development in Townsville, but it’s only when you look through the Lancini Group’s portfolio that you get a true idea of the significance of the contribution to Townsville’s architectural landscape. Growing up on a Halifax cane farm, before becoming a bricklayer, building subcontractor, and then eventually a major developer with offices in Townsville and Brisbane and his name etched on Queensland’s Rich List, Laurence Lancini believes in Townsville and will continue to invest in the city.
Where are you from and how did you get started? I was raised on a small cane farm in Halifax and went to school in Ingham, then boarding school in Charters Towers. I did a bricklaying apprenticeship and moved to Townsville in 1981. I got my builders licence the following year and started doing small jobs before moving onto housing, industrial and home units. By the early 1990s I was focusing on smaller retail projects and, before long, I was building my first shopping centre.
Which of your projects has created the biggest impact on the city? I think Domain Central made a significant impact in the home improvement sector. Also I think the way Fairfield Central is emerging in the suburbs (see Grant McOmish’s section for details) will play a major part in the growth of the southern corridor. There is no doubt that City Lane and City Arcade, and particularly the evolution of the next stages, will play a major part in creating critical mass in that area of the city.
How do you view the city today? Townsville has many natural attributes and beauties. The urban sprawl has drawn life from the city, but the momentum has started to swing back with recent developments, starting with The Strand. The new City Waterfront Priority Development Area (PDA) — if done correctly — will bring multiple opportunities. The Railway Yards, Central, proposed boardwalk and the development within the port land, as well as the stadium, entertainment and convention centre, will certainly make it a more liveable city.
What project needs to happen? The PDA — I hope that the three levels of government will deal with the necessary planning issues and contribute to the upfront infrastructure to have the individual precincts ‘shovel-ready’. I have a lot of confidence in the city as Townsville has such a diverse economy that rides through the tough times better than most regional cities. I consider it a safe place to invest and will continue to do so with the goal of improving the lifestyle and liveability of the city.
What are your hopes for Townsville? If you have a vibrant CBD, you have a much better region. We need to expand the night time economy, our CBD needs to be a place of choice with bespoke-type venues with food, bars, night markets, food markets and various other entertainment offers. We also need venues for the middle aged, not just the young.

GLEN MAIDMENT MAIDMENT DEVELOPMENTS
A diesel fitter from Moranbah, Glen Maidment first started purchasing and renovating property as a hobby in Mackay before he identified a bigger opportunity. Based in Townsville for 15 years, Maidment Developments has significantly grown the Northern Beaches with masterplanned communities like Sanctum and Eden Park and is shortly going to be launching another residential hub closer to the CBD.
When you started dabbling in renovations, did you ever have an inkling of where it would ultimately lead? I was certainly keen on property in general and, starting out as a renovator, I quickly realised that there was a big asset in the land component. I was a diesel fitter by trade so, in some respects, I had no idea about property; but the more I looked into it the more I realised that there was a really good business opportunity. So we started to search for bigger blocks to subdivide. Then I got hooked. What’s been Townsville’s biggest coming of age? Seeing the heart of the city change with the revitalisation of the mall, City Lane, and the general push from all levels of government to get more happening in the city. From my point of view — even though we develop in the suburbs — any vibrant city is driven by its centre. What are your hopes for Townsville? I’d love to see the vision for the City Waterfront Priority Development Area (PDA) evolve. To have a river running through the middle of your city heart is a fantastic opportunity that shouldn’t be missed. While there’s mixed opinions, the super stadium is an iconic project and will be a catalyst for the city. What legacy do you want to leave? Our motto is ‘creating communities’ and I hope that’s the way the public perceive us in many years to come. I want people to look back on what we’ve done as a developer and say, “They have certainly created three exceptional communities in Townsville”. That’s what motivates me.
What’s next? Later this year we are launching a new masterplanned residential community in Townsville. It will be a premium residential product on the Bohle River near Cannon Park and Willows Shopping Centre. It’s something totally different and will give residents who love living in this very popular area a chance to build their dream home on a traditional-size lot. Last words? As a developer and a resident of Townsville, I am certainly excited about the next few years. I think we have an opportunity as a community to change the face of Townsville and provide some development through the entire city that will not only be exciting for us, but for our kids and future generations.

GRANT McOMISH INGENTA
When Grant McOmish relocated his family to Townsville in 1998 to start the 2236-lot Fairfield Waters development they only intended to stay for a few years, but the city’s ‘can-do’ attitude and warmth saw roots set. While Ingenta is now onto the final stage of the transformative Fairfield Waters development, Grant’s development philosophies haven’t changed — get the community and environmental aspects right and people will come.
Where are you from and how did you get started? I was born in western Queensland and grew up on cattle and sheep properties. I did most of my schooling in Rockhampton and started a traineeship with the local LJ Hooker franchise at 19. At age 25 I started my own business — it grew into a diversified real estate group specialising in project management, but we also did our own developments, including building and civil construction. It evolved into a pure development business and we are now delivering projects in Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton and Brisbane. Which of your projects has created the biggest impact on the city? Fairfield Waters set a new standard for Townsville. The amount of community infrastructure involved and the complexity of creating an environmentally sensitive development on such a large scale was a huge undertaking. It was also a landmark project in the way it integrated residential and community facilities, like Fairfield Central Shopping Centre, which we are still developing with the Lancini Group. It will soon expand to include a Kmart, countless food options, an evening dining precinct, another major supermarket, and a tavern; plus a business and homemakers precinct, which are under construction now.
What’s your vision for Townsville? The Strand development gave Townsville a great kick and I think the waterfront precinct and stadium project are crucial because they will launch us to the next level. The city has to maintain its heart, the developments need to be sustainable, they need to be community based, and they need to complement our sense of community connectedness. What are you working on now? There’s a lot going on, but I’m really enjoying Fairways [at Townsville Golf Club in Rosslea] because it will deliver the community a new 18-hole championship-standard golf course as part of the 226-lot residential development, plus a new clubhouse. We also bought the Townsville West State School last year. It’s an iconic building and we’re excited about ensuring that its heritage value is preserved through careful restoration and an appropriate re-utilisation combining community and commerce.
“THE CITY HAS TO MAINTAIN ITS HEART, THE DEVELOPMENTS NEED TO… COMPLEMENT OUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY CONNECTEDNESS” GRANT McOMISH

BRAD WEBB BM WEBB INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY DEVELOPERS
Little gets Brad Webb more excited than concrete, steel and dirt. A self-made man who started building box trailers at 16, bought his first property at 17 and acquired the first truck in his industrial empire at 19 when Townsville stopped at Garbutt, he has been the architect of a large portion of the city’s dirt and earth-related development; including his very own 700-acre industrial estate at the Bohle.
What was the point in your working life where you thought, ‘Wow — this could get big’? It was a combination of things. When you look at your life story you have about seven year blocks where things change dramatically. When I bought the 700 acres that would eventually become Webb Drive Industrial Estate in 1999, it was all swamp. Everyone said, “It’s too far out — it’s never going to work”, but I saw the enormity of the potential. Why do you like living in Townsville? I’m proud to say that I’ve seen Townsville grow from a dusty town of about 40,000 into a vibrant city. Once upon a time, you’d hang your head when you said you were from Townsville, but not any more. Our university is getting world recognition, we have the biggest military base in Australia, a strong industrial base, and we’re centrally located to be the transport hub for the north with road train access straight to the port, which is expanding. What are the biggest changes you’ve seen? When I first started here in the 1970s there were only two bridges across Ross River — one at the meatworks and Rooney’s Bridge at Railway Estate. The army road [University Drive] was a dead end past the barracks, and Annandale and Fairfield Waters didn’t exist.
Which of your projects has created the biggest impact on the city? This estate has changed the whole concept of industrial property. When you look at it, there’s not a car on the footpath; no rubbish on the street or at the front of the buildings; and no damaged fences. With everything from hydraulics, mining, fuel and transport companies to office supplies, stock food and logistics; it’s all in one spot, like the Stockland Shopping Centre of industrial. We are building a shed for ourselves now that will take things to a whole new level again — there are granite bench tops and garden bed borders; marble floors and walls, and roses. I like sheds, but I don’t think there’s anything like this shed in North Queensland.

With more than 40 years in the industry, Mike Rogers knows his tyres. Starting out as a tyre fitter in Ayr in 1972, the industrious lad soon moved through the ranks from sales rep to store manager and state manager positions. When an opportunity to move to Townsville arose, some 20 years ago, Mike and his wife Linda didn’t hesitate. “With our daughter going to university, and a more diverse range of further education and trade qualification options for our son, we jumped at the chance,” Mike says. “It’s been one of the best choices we’ve ever made. We haven’t looked backed.” Describing Townsville as a city that offers anyone who truly wants to succeed a fair go,

Mike says he was confident to take the reins when the opportunity to buy the Garbutt business from Bridgestone Australia presented itself in 2010. Three years later Mike took on the Deeragun store. “We saw the opportunity (for the Deeragun store) with the area growing so fast,” Mike says. “We needed to be part of the growth if we were to expand our business.” Now, with three grandchildren, Mike can’t think of a safer city than Townsville for them to grow up in. “People in general will help in a crisis. You only need look at the situation when the two boys were lost at Mt Stuart,” Mike says. “The general public, SES and police were all out in force searching. tyre businesses. “Our team vary in background but have one thing in common and that is pride in their job,” Mike says. “It’s vital to engage your team in the business. They’re a major part of your success and it’s important they are treated that way. It makes no difference what business you’re in, the consumer can buy the same type of tyre, fridge, computer, or any product you wish to name from a wide range of retailers. It’s the service we provide that determines if we get and keep the business.” Townsville has been good to the Rogers family and they believe in repaying the favour by putting back into the community. They sponsor many local sporting clubs and, through the Bridgestone organisation, are proud supporters of the Leukaemia Foundation. “This year our manager at Deeragun had a great result in raising funds through Shave for a Cure,” Mike says. As for the Rogers’ vision for Townsville over the coming decade, Mike Jnr sums it up: “I see a great future for our city, despite the doom and gloom we sometimes hear. Townsville continues to grow at a sustainable pace. The Northern Beaches and Fairfield Precinct is proof of that.

MUNDINGBURRA WITH LARGE BLOCKS, WIDE ROADS AND ROSS RIVER ON ITS DOORSTEP, MUNDINGBURRA HAS MANY CHARMS. WORDS KYLIE DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY JOSEPHINE CARTER
Jodie and Brian Bedford love their street in Mundingburra so much that, when they did decide to upsize, they only relocated 200 metres down the road. “Our house is on a 1012m2 corner block with a beautiful rose garden in the front yard and we’re right near the river,” Jodie says. The rose garden is significant as Jodie is on the board for Cystic Fibrosis Townsville and has a family member with the disease. “All of the national awareness for cystic fibrosis is done under the name ‘65 Roses’ as children born with the disease have trouble saying cystic fibrosis,” Jodie says. “Brian and I are working our way towards having a garden full of 65 different roses and that’s what always caught our eye about this house.” Jodie works as the Practice Manager for SportsMed NQ Physio while Brian works for the Townsville City Council, so it only takes them a few minutes to get to work. “In winter it’s nice to ride or walk and just enjoy the peace along the river before the day starts,” Jodie says. The couple’s dogs, pugs Daisy (4) and Cara (13), also enjoy river strolls. Cara laps up all of the attention she gets as she waddles along behind her humans wearing a harness with pink butterfly wings. And sometimes Daisy gets so immersed in the suburb she actually gets wet. “One afternoon my sister Paula and I were walking in Anderson Gardens and Daisy became very interested in the ducks in the pond,” Jodie says. “Next thing we knew she’d jumped in and needed to be rescued!” Anderson Gardens is one of Jodie’s favourite spots in Mundingburra, especially since Paula was married there five years ago. “It was a perfect afternoon under a big tree with big pink lilies and all our family together,” Jodie says. Jodie and Brian got married in March and sold their other home all within 30 days. “It was such an amazing and crazy time for us, but we survived,” Jodie says. “We had no intentions of moving at the time but when our dream home came up we
decided to put in an offer. Luckily the wedding was all organised so we had some spare time before the big day to move.” From the outside, the home looks like a cute little cottage but when you step inside it expands into a very large, private home. “Our family all say that the house is ‘me’ because of the two walk-in robes that I’ve filled with clothes and shoes,” Jodie says. “The only thing we plan on adding is a shed in the backyard for Brian’s boat. He loves fishing.” Only 10 minutes to Castletown or Stockland, with great schools and restaurants nearby, Jodie thinks Mundingburra is the perfect suburb. “It’s so green and leafy and the neighbours all down our street are very friendly. It’s a lovely place to live and hopefully raise a family one day.”

SHEd REVOLUTION
GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN SHEDS WERE MERELY A PLACE TO DUMP JUNK AND PARK CARS. JUST ASK THESE THREE LOCAL LADIES WHO ARE PART OF THE GROWING TREND OF FEMALES TAKING OVER THE TRADITIONAL ‘MAN CAVE’ TO CREATE THEIR OWN ‘SHE SHEDS’.
SUE’S SHEd NORTH WARD Most days artist Sue Tilley can be found happily cutting, grinding and welding in her purpose-made ‘she shed’ built on a Heritage-listed site, which incorporates a Colonial-era military drill hall. With the help of Garage World project manager Nathan Clarke, Sue designed the shed and garage so they look like traditional timber-framed weatherboard sheds, but have the strength of steel and the benefit of being low-maintenance. “The challenge for us was to design a product that meets today’s cyclonic design requirements while still retaining that heritage look and feel,” Nathan says. “This particular product is a Colorbond steel alternative to timber weatherboard and, combined with a special 25-degree roof pitch, has been designed to resemble the look of the adjacent weatherboard drill hall.”
46 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2015 duomagazine.com.au
Sue’s six by six-metre shed serves as her workshop, while the original drill hall is now an art gallery, office and home. The matching nine by seven-metre shed houses the cars, and her husband’s and son’s big boys’ toys. “In my shed, the whole side wall opens to a verandah so I can get maximum fresh air and work out there in the shade too,” says Sue, who is currently creating a ‘Blue Wanderer’ Butterfly made from vintage metal and old musical instruments for Strand Ephemera (opens this month). “I love having the space to create and, now I’m not working in the garage, the cars stay so much cleaner without the welding fumes and grinder dust settling on them!” Take a closer look at Sue’s workshop when you visit The Drill Hall Studio art gallery at 27 Mitchell Street (near The Strand), open seven days a week.

HEATHER’S SHEd NOME Heather Tozer shares her converted American barn, complete with an English conservatory, with a 22-year-old cat, rescue dog, chooks and a veggie garden. Hopper windows and wooden louvres add to the shed’s charm, which also has a small deck on the side, carport and storage space at the back . “A feature window at the front is what sets Heather’s shed apart,” says Garage World project manager Nathan Clarke. “Heather also needed it to be suitable for her as she ages, which required careful planning.” Antique furniture and a blue glass chandelier add individuality to Heather’s shed, which is next door to her son Philip and grandchildren Mackenzie and Clayton. She’s also converted one of the bedrooms into a studio as painting is a passion. “One should never judge a book by its cover,” Heather says. “From the outside it may look like a shed but, inside, it’s a well-loved home with everything I need. I adore the high ceilings and conservatory look. You can lock the midges out in summer and, when it rains, you feel as though you’re part of the weather.” Nathan agrees that many people underestimate the humble shed. “They’re a very cost-effective option for extending your family living area, or creating an exciting business work space, without having to renovate or rent a shop front.”
FIONA’S SHEd HERMIT PARK Using her shed for pottery and mosaic work, and art classes, Fiona Banner loves the light and airy feel of her nine by six-metre space, with added verandah and double carport. Only four metres from the house, Fiona says her shed is “a much better use of the space in our yard” and the perfect place to enjoy sculpting in peace. “I used to work under my house, which was a much darker and smaller space,” Fiona says. “It’s great to have a quiet space to shut the world out and be able to work creatively.” Garage World project manager Nathan Clarke says Fiona’s shed is a unique design that incorporates three purposes in one (art studio, awning and carport) without looking like a ‘blokey’ shed.

and lots in Nelly Bay or marina berths in Airlie Beach, the quality of the developments combining with the surrounding environment gave me a great platform to talk with people”. Knight Frank Managing Director, Craig Stack said, “The reason we were so keen to join with Andrew was his performance over the past seven years at Port of Airlie. I have worked in the Whitsunday region for a long time and three years ago I was very concerned about business confidence there.” “Andrew took the initiative and worked hard with the marketing of very high quality units and marina berths – just the type of product you would think would be toughest to sell in a tough environment – and turned market perceptions for Port of Airlie and Airlie Beach

around. Over the past 12 months, Port of Airlie has been easily the best performing development story in all of North Queensland, cutting a swathe through high end investors and high wealth purchasers.” Andrew is humble about his success: “It is good product and all buyers respect good product. That is my point, Townsville is investment worthy. Our task at Knight Frank is to maintain this message. We are marketing the best value for money residential lots in all of North Queensland at Bluewattle, and then at the other end of the scale we are selling $1 million plus units at Veer on the Strand. The product we are selling simply fits in with a terrific lifestyle in a terrific region.”

KNIGHT FRANK HAS SOURCED SITES FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT IN NORTH QUEENSLAND FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS. THEY HAVE SOURCED and negotiated some of the biggest development sites in Townsville for new development. And their market research and feasibility assessment means genuine developers have been able to determine quickly if an opportunity suits their operation. “We continue to monitor residential sales activity, including established housing and building starts, so we can maneuver around impending under supply or over supply trends,” says Knight Frank Managing Director, Craig Stack. “We are most proud of the influence our Commercial sales team can have on a residential mixed use development too. The recent contract of the commercial areas to the exciting “Veer” development on the Strand pushed the development into the construction stage”.

SARAH ARNOLD Smile Dental Marketing and Practice Co-ordinator and Home Cook
My kitchen space is a place for: Sharing, cooking, eating, and having a drink. Ours is a large space where more than one of us can work in there together especially great when the kids are helping. Our Island bench was designed as a “bar” for entertaining. On Sundays and for casual entertaining it’s like a tappa’s bar where we’ll serve multiple share plates of what’s inspiring us from our recent travels and …wine.
OneTouchFunction for espresso, latte macchiato, cappuccino, white coffee and ‘My Coffee’, milk froth, warm milk and hot water, 1kg coffee bean container, 2.5 litre water tank, stainless steel $4,599 www.neff.com.au
NEFF FLEXINDUCTION COOKTOP 5 induction zones including 2 FlexInduction zones, TwistPad magnetic control, 17 power levels for each zone, Powerboost function for all zones, keep warm function, LED display and timer for each zone, residual heat indicator, cleaning lock. $4,399 www.neff.com.au
Every kitchen should have: A soul. Our kitchen is the hub of the household and accommodates our lifestyle. With a large family, it’s a hive of activity. I’m a fan of having multiple sinks, we have three; two in the washing up area, great for the kids to lend a hand and the third in the prep area.
GAGGENAU 400 SERIES VARIO COOL WINE CABINET With the RW 464 wine climate cabinet you can enjoy your wine always at the right temperature. It offers space for up to 99 bottles and has two independently controlled climate zones. The electronic control system ensures constant temperatures of 5°C to 18°C, which can be set to the exact degree. $15,499 www.gaggenau.com.au
In my kitchen I couldn’t live without: A set of sharp knives and a mandolin. I also love our large double oven with 8 burner stove inclusive of teppanyaki plate, steam oven, and sous vide appliance. Oh did I mention the wine fridge? The most overlooked element of the kitchen: Enough space for everyone to gather, socialise and help. Preparation/bench space is important to consider. Fifteen years ago when I designed our current kitchen the trend was to downsize the space but we went the opposite because we have always cooked and entertained at home.
GAGGENAU 400 SERIES TELESCOPIC TABLE VENTILATION The AL 400 is an extendable table ventilation, which disappears completely into the worktop when not in use. Vapours and odours are extracted directly where they arise quietly and effectively – an ideal solution for kitchen islands and open spaces. $14,499 www.cannonheaters.com.au
In my dream kitchen I would have: A large walk-in pantry with shelves that contain all of my hundreds of appliances, pans and equipment as well as serving platters. I also like to have a wide variety of pantry items in order to prepare a repertoire of cuisines. At the moment we are creating an outdoor kitchen which is very exciting, obviously this will involve fire!
FISHER & PAYKEL 60CM WARMING DRAWER Putting the finishing touch to a delicious meal or coffee, the warming drawer keeps plates and cups evenly warm. It is designed to fit under 480mm or 600mm high appliances and can be installed in many combinations – under the bench or built-in to the wall. It is also strong enough to support the weight of other products such as an oven or coffee maker. Finished in stainless steel and polished metal. www.fisherpaykel.com/au

Famous for their ‘No Sale, No Charge’ guarantee, Todd Pearce and Greg Page opened Page & Pearce in Townsville in 2003. Their journey began back in 1993, after they attended a seminar that challenged the way real estate was traditionally performed. “Our positioning of ‘No Sale, No Charge’ has led us to the number one sales position in Townsville so it’s obvious vendors love the concept,” Todd says. “Just as you wouldn’t pay the plumber if the dripping tap wasn’t fixed, so we believe we shouldn’t get paid until the job is done. If you don’t get paid then we don’t get paid, no ifs or buts. “We also offer landlords our ‘Flat Management Fee’ guarantee, which means property owners know how much they’ll be charged without any hidden extras or add-ons.” Born and bred in Townsville, Todd says the real estate business is about people and relationships. “Each day we help somebody achieve their dream of their first home, an investment property or a pathway to move on to new beginnings. It could be a property like an old Queenslander in North Ward, or one of the modern homes sprouting up at North Shore or a classic structure on Castle Hill. “You’ve got to love the diversity Townsville offers. We’re living in one of the best cities on the globe with an immeasurable future.” Todd and his wife and business partner Sue are now the sole owners of Page & Pearce and both have great visions for the company. Sue has been working in the business for the last eight years focusing on special projects and, importantly, creating a great experience for clients. Sue’s background is in administration and she’s also a busy mum and volunteers for Ronald McDonald House. “We live and work in this beautiful city and we believe in giving back to the community so we are conscious of supporting locals, local businesses and local charities,” Sue says. Both Todd and Sue are focused on building a culture of total dedication to achieving maximum results for their clients and customers. “We’re very proud of the systems we have in place at Page & Pearce. Our systems offer clients a great selling, buying or renting experience and we have a fantastic team who implement them at a very professional level,” Todd says. “That’s what it boils down to — teamwork — and we believe we have the best team in town. It’s all about understanding what customers want and then satisfying that need. The ultimate goal would be for Page & Pearce to become the benchmark in real estate nationally.”

FOOLS WITH TOOLS
When doing your home improvements it important to remember to look after your ears.
Often it is overlooked as people think that short periods of noise exposure is not going to damage the hearing or that the noise doesn’t seem particularly loud so it is safe. Machinery and power tools are particularly deceptive with the amount of damaging noise they produce. People mistakenly think that short sharp loud bursts of high pitched noise such as rifles, hammering, loud drums or music, and even nail guns do the most damage to your hearing as they create the largest amount of discomfort to the ear. Although they most certainly do cause damage to the ear, by far the more dangerous and common noises to damage the ear are constant low pitched machinery noises which seem much softer to us.
... by far the more dangerous and common noises to damage the ear are constant low pitched machinery noises which seem much softer to us.
The human ear is tuned to focus on sounds which are within the human speech range which is generally mid-high pitched sounds. For example two sounds, a low pitched sound, and a high pitched sound can be exactly the same volume yet perceptually to the human listener the higher pitched sound will seem louder. This can be evident when watching some television shows and an ad may come on which seems louder than the show. The actual volume of the ad is generally the same as the program you
are watching but they change the pitch of the ad to a higher pitch and to the human ear it seems the ad is significantly louder. So people mistakenly think that because the noise doesn’t seem that loud to them then it isn’t damaging the ear and they continue using machinery and tools for long periods of time without protection. Noise levels are measured in units called dBA which takes into account the tuning of the human ear to the more high pitched sounds. A safe level for noise exposure is 85dBA for 8 hours. For every 3 dB over 85dBA that you are exposed to then halve the amount of time in which can be safely spent. For example 88 dBA is 4hrs safely, 91dBA is 2hrs, 94dBA is 1 hrs and so forth. The average power tool creates around 110 dBA of noise so safe periods are less than a minute.
reduce environment noise but still allow speech to be heard. Ear plugs are also a good source of hearing protection however they may cause problems with spreading and encouraging growth of bacterial and fungal infections within the ear canal. If using disposable earplugs it is best to replace daily and not handle them too much before inserting into the canal. The best protective noise plugs are those that are specifically made for your ear as they reduce more noise, are able to be sterilized before and after use, do not require handling and are very comfortable as they are moulded to the ear.
So what are your hearing protection options? There are several options available to protect your hearing. Probably the best source of hearing protection are the protective ear muffs as they provide over 30 decibels of protection, do not occlude the ear canal so fungal and bacterial infections are not spread or harboured, are easily slipped on and off, and advanced ear muffs have noise canceling features similar to hearing aids which only

LAURELYN HIGGINS | HYGIENIST | SMILE DENTAL
SNACK ATTACK! Why do we need to protect baby teeth from tooth decay if they’re going to fall out anyway? Smile Dental’s Hygienist Laurelyn Higgins has the answers! Breastfeeding: baby’s first dental treatment The benefits of breastfeeding are obvious, ranging from hunger and thirst satisfaction to maternal comfort. From a dental standpoint, breastfeeding also represents the first natural dental treatment. Like gym exercises that shape our bodies, baby’s tongue presses the nipple and breast against the palate. Breastfeeding creates the ideal palate shape and room for the teeth. It ticks all the boxes for the start of dental growth and facial development.
Every time we have snacks processed with sugar, the bacteria “eat” too.
Tooth-friendly pacifiers Pacifiers can be a source of comfort for crying infants. However, if sucked for too long or too hard, pacifiers can lead to orthodontic problems such as an open bite. It’s a situation where there’s an obvious gap between the front teeth when the back teeth are closed together. The good news is that tooth-friendly pacifiers like the Dentistar Pacifier work in a similar way to breastfeeding. Available online in trendy colours, they offer natural development for kids’ teeth. Blocked noses change lives Breathing through the nose to filter and humidify the air is a necessity but kids with blocked noses often turn to breathing through the mouth. Chronic nasal congestion and mouth breathing can result in high plaque levels and undesirable facial growth. They can also contribute to obstructive sleep apnoea. Depending on the severity, sleep apnoea can result in a child’s IQ dropping up to 20 points. He or she may also be at higher risk for ADHD. It’s imperative to remove breathing obstructions early so kids can have optimal physical and cognitive development. Have a chat with your doctor if you have any concerns about chronic nasal congestion.

Kids who grind their teeth at night There are lots of theories on the subject. Some think that deep bites and retruded lower jaws are the culprits. Others say that kids grind to equalise pressure in their ears due to blockages from enlarged adenoids. Then there are those who point the finger at toothaches, earaches and teething pain. But the bottom line is that grinding can damage the teeth and cause discomfort for your child. Talk to us if you have any concerns.
Sugar and snacks Tooth decay depends on several things but the main culprits are the bacteria in our mouths and the sugar in our diets. Every time we have snacks processed with sugar, the bacteria “eat” too. They create acids from sugary foods and drinks which make the holes in teeth. And that includes natural fruit sugars as well as lollies. It’s best to limit snacks and avoid constant nibbling or sipping all day. Nurturing a love of wholesome foods and sticking to mealtimes are better ways to avoid decay. Investing for the future There are many reasons we need to protect kids’ teeth from tooth decay with wise diet choices, strict cleaning routines and regular dental visits. 5 Discomfort from tooth decay can affect a child’s health, sleep patterns and behaviour. 5 Removing unhealthy baby teeth early can cause space problems for adult teeth, resulting in crooked teeth. 5 Fixing the decayed teeth of an anxious child may require general anaesthetic – a serious matter. 5 Creating good habits early is one of the best investments a parent can make.

MASSAGE… LUXURY OR NECESSITY?
Just hearing the word massage can make people smile. So when Physio’s prescribe massage for clients, it’s not like a body spa with hot oils, crystals, fluffy bathrobes and slippers.
Therapeutic massage focuses on relieving muscle tension or releasing a particular area of the body that is affecting your injury. How often have you had a massage for a stiff back only to get 5 minutes on this area and the rest on the healthy parts of your body? The therapeutic benefits of massage include promoting blood flow and increasing circulation, therefore causing the flushing of painful waste products. It can relax tight muscles, increase flexibility, range of movement and relieve pain. All these can help the Physio to achieve the optimum outcome and often a client will be treated by both in combination. We often find ourselves putting up with pain or stiffness, thinking this will settle but the longer this continues the longer it will take to remedy once treatment starts.
The therapeutic benefits of massage include promoting blood flow and increasing circulation, therefore causing the flushing of painful waste products.
uncomfortable, but the techniques shouldn’t cause additional pain. It is important that you let the therapist know if it is too painful or if you know you react to massage. You should also let the therapist know if you are taking blood thinners and never have massage over open wounds, blood clots or recent scarring. 3. When should I get massage? In the first 48-72 hours after an injury, the tissue is in the inflammatory phase and massage can actually do more harm than good. 4. Do I have to get naked? No! The massage therapist will offer a gown and/or towels to keep your modesty, but they do need to work on your affected area. 5. Will massage cure me? They are good, but not God. Massage is one component of treatment. To maximise recovery this needs to be combined with appropriate stretching and strengthening programs. Posture is also important. You can have massages weekly but if you sleep on a poor pillow and then sit in front of a wrong height computer all day, then you will be on a vicious merry go round.
FAQ 1. Should I see a Physio first? Yes, if you have an injury, as a Physio can identify and diagnose injuries and suggest areas to work on. 2. Should massage be painful? Tight/ injured tissue will be highly sensitive to palpation (I’m sure my patients are all nodding) and manual therapy can be very
At SportsMedNQ
6. Do I need to have an injury to have a massage? No. Many people use massage as a prevention. During our involvement with the Crocs and Fury they have weekly massages for this reason. Office workers or people in high stress jobs use massage to control muscular tension to control neck pain and headaches. This often helps with sleep patterns as well. 7. How often should I have a massage? This is very much up to the individual. People that suffer from muscular tightness may have them weekly to monthly. They would much prefer to control this rather than suffer tension headaches and take medication. In the treatment of people’s injuries, working with a skilled and professional massage therapist is an integral part to optimise their management. I think it is now readily accepted that preventative medicine is better than the cure!

THE INSIDE SCOOP ON PRE-WORKOUT SUPPLEMENTS They allow us to lift heavier, go faster, workout longer and boost our mood, but are they good for us?
When we are trying to fit our exercise in after a long day at work, in our lunch hour or early in the morning after a late night, it can be hard to find the energy and the motivation to work out, let alone at a high intensity. It is under these circumstances that many people are turning to stimulant supplements such as “pre-workouts”, with the demand for these products increasing sharply in recent years. Pre-workout supplements are marketed as performance and mood enhancers. Taken about half an hour prior to exercise, they enable you to lift heavier, go faster and workout longer. The composition of their ingredients varies and their exact makeup is often not disclosed on the packaging. Some of the most common ingredients include B vitamins to aid in metabolic and nervous system functioning, amino acids to provide the muscles with a direct fuel source, creatine to re-energise muscles allowing for increased strength and endurance and, of course, caffeine (often in numerous forms) to increase focus, energy and work capacity. They may also include other nervous system stimulants (some of which are banned substances in elite sports), nutrients and herbal blends. The average amount of caffeine per serve of pre-workout is 200 mg; however, some have as much as 400 mg per serve. That’s the equivalent of 4 shots of espresso or 4 energy drinks! Studies have shown consumption of 400 mg of caffeine per day to be safe, although high doses of caffeine (and other stimulants) may be dangerous for people on certain medications or with certain medical conditions and can be a contributing factor to sleep deprivation and adrenal fatigue when used in place of much needed rest. Our adrenal glands are the producers of the hormones, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol that help our bodies to cope with stress. Stress is an insult to which our body has to adapt and includes physical stress (injury or exercise), psychological stress,
...using stimulants to push our body when it is telling us to rest can eventually cause us to “burn out” and can jeopardise the results we work so hard for.
emotional stress, environmental stress and immunological stress (illness). Prolonged or severe stress can cause the adrenal glands to become exhausted, diminishing their function. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include tiredness, a “burnt-out” feeling, fearfulness, allergies, frequent respiratory or other infections, arthritis, anxiety, depression, reduced memory, insomnia, low libido, lack of motivation and an inability to lose weight. Effects on exercise performance include persistent muscle soreness, increased incidence of injuries, decreased coordination and decreased muscular strength and endurance. In other words, using stimulants to push our body when it is telling us to rest can eventually cause us to “burn out” and can jeopardise the results we work so hard for. A much better way to fuel our workouts (and your life) is minus the stimulants. Stimulant-free formulas are available! If you live a busy or stressful life or exercise intensely regularly, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin C and Coenzyme Q10 supplementation may
help your energy levels. Adrenal support using herbs like the Ginsengs, Rhodiola, Skullcap, Liquorice and Rehmannia can also be advantageous, by helping your body to cope with stress and preventing burnout. The moral of the story with pre-workout supplements is “What goes up must come down”. If you are going to use a pre-workout to energise your workouts, make sure you balance it with adequate recovery and a nutrient rich diet and consider professionally-guided supplementation if you feel you need a little extra help.

GUY LEECH BUSTS YOUR TOP 4 WINTER WORKOUT EXCUSES
ACCORDING TO “AUSTRALIA’S NUMBER ONE FITNESS GUY”, GUY LEECH, USING WINTER AS AN EXCUSE TO DITCH YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE, JUST DOESN’T CUT IT. “Winter often provides the perfect excuse for people to skip workouts, or drop their workout routine all together,” he says. “But the reality is, consistency is key, and you can’t build a strong and healthy body by bailing out three months of the year.” Here, “Leechy” slams the most common excuses for skipping winter work outs and replaces them with solutions. 1. IT’S TOO COLD TO GET UP! “This is one of my favourite excuses,” says Leech, who suggests making a fool-proof plan to get you out of your warm and cosy bed. “Put a heater in your room and set it on a timer so it starts cranking twenty minutes before you wake up. Additionally, lay out your workout clothes the night before so you can literally jump out of bed and put them on. If that fails, recruit an exercise buddy and enforce a ‘no cancellation’ policy between you,” he suggests.
2. I’M HIDDEN UNDER WINTER WOOLIES, SO IT DOESN’T REALLY MATTER WHAT I LOOK LIKE According to Leech this is one of the most dangerous excuses you can make. “This sort of excuse is giving yourself permission ‘to let yourself go’ and besides all the negative health consequences, chances are by the time spring comes around you’ll be very sorry you skipped all those workouts and feasted on all that winter ‘comfort food’,” Guy warns. “As little as 15 minutes of exercise is proven to make a difference to your fitness and wellbeing,” he advises. “Remember, losing weight is far harder than maintaining your healthy weight, so don’t line yourself up behind the eight ball,” he adds. 3. I DON’T WANT TO CATCH A COLD! “This is an old wives tale from way back”, says Leech. “Exercising in the cold doesn’t give you a cold, on the contrary, exercise keeps us fit and healthy, which in turn boosts immunity. So you’re not going to be any healthier by skipping
64 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2015 duomagazine.com.au
your workout.” Leech adds that the winter we experience in Australia is nowhere near as intense as other places around the world where people continue to exercise on a daily basis. “Go to New York in winter and you’ll see countless people rugged up and going for a jog in the snow! We Aussies need to man up!” 4. IT’S DARK BEFORE AND AFTER WORK AND I DON’T LIKE TRAINING IN THE DARK “This one is a doozy,” says Guy. “If you don’t want to train outside in the dark, no worries – there are tonnes of options for you! Join a gym, go to a local yoga studio, or get on board with an outdoor personal training group,” he says. “If you’re cash strapped and none of those options suit, just grab a buddy and make a plan to meet three mornings or evenings a week to go for a walk or a run.” For more information on Guy Leech visit: www.guyleech.com

LOW FAT DIET – HEALTHY RIGHT?
Is our low fat phobia really keeping us healthy inside or out?
Why is nutrition important anyway? We are made up of trillions of cells that rely on nutrients we provide through digestion to enable them to function. Not feeding cells correct nutrients leads to deficiency and disease. Fats: Healthy fats make cell membranes enabling nutrients to pass into cells for use. By eating a low fat diet, it’s likely we’re not making healthy cell membranes with nutrients not passing to cells. Quality fat is vital, along with how it is prepared, as different fats have different smoke points and heating them beyond these points makes them go rancid, like poison in our body (a whole other subject!). Healthy fats also turn off our hunger hormone ghrelin so we don’t overeat.
The right fat is health forming. Low fat high sugar is health harming and weight producing.
To extend shelf life of products, marketers’ manufacture plastic manmade fats called hydrogenated or trans fats which are in everything from low fat biscuits to Heart Tick approved fries. Hydrogenated fat is vegetable oil that has been heated beyond its smoke point, turning it rancid, then mixed with metal particles and chemicals. These fats cause our cell membranes to become brittle and unable to absorb nutrients or communicate with each other.
Low Fat often means high sugar. What is this doing to our health? Every time we eat sugars and refined carbohydrates blood sugar rises causing insulin to be released. While there is insulin in our blood we do not burn fat. Insulin is our fat storage hormone. Sugars also don’t turn off our hunger hormone ghrelin making us overeat. When we continually eat refined carbohydrates and sugars we have so much sugar in our blood that it starts to coat our cell membranes (glycation) and they become hard like toffee, unable to absorb nutrients or communicate with each other – brain fogginess, Alzheimer’s. Sugar also coats our joints leading to arthritis and builds up plaque in our arteries. The problems sugar causes are too many to list – breakdown in bodily functions, no nutrients entering cells, dysfunction and disease. Conclusion: While sugar is in the blood our body does not burn fat. Most sugar consumed comes from commercially prepared foods which, to extend their shelf life, contain chemicals. This presents a further problem as chemicals find a home in fat stores making them even harder to break down.

TAKE BACK YOUR HEALTH WITH OUR 3 MONTH GROUP PROGRAM
The right fat is health forming. Low fat / high sugar is health harming and weight producing. Processing any food depletes nutrient content and concentrates sugars and chemical toxins. 3 Things we should eliminate from our diet at all costs: • Sugars (unless from whole fruit and only 1 to 2 pieces of low GI fruit a day – less if overweight as fat will not be burned while sugar is present) • Processed Foods (laden with sugars/chemicals) • Hydrogenated and Trans Fats (Rancid and chemically altered) By reducing blood sugar (insulin spikes) in our blood through adjusting intake of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, we can get our body to utilise fat for energy rather than glucose. This is the key to true weight loss.

DI LANEYRIE
ABOUT ME: I was born in Charters Towers and moved to Townsville when I was 17. My husband and I started a building company in 1990 and have been involved in the construction industry ever since. I have managed our projects over the years which has kept me more than busy. My son and daughter-in-law and beautiful grand-daughter live in Perth and I love to visit as often as I can. I love my pilates classes and catching up with friends and family and walking my little dog on the Strand. My husband and I have only recently retired and I look forward to a complete change of lifestyle and pace.
MY BAG for all seasons is a beige
Oroton number. I saw it in the Oroton shop in Perth when my son re-located from Tanzania and sent me an SOS to help him set up a new unit at Cottesloe Beach. Don’t ask me why I was in the Oroton shop when I should have been buying sheets and towels and saucepans? It’s so versatile and it’s travelled far and wide with me. GOLD JEWELLERY This gold fob necklace and bracelet was bought by my husband on a trip to Adelaide. The medallion is special as it was given to me by my cousin, Jan, who is more like a sister to me. ALVIERO MARTINI WALLET Bought on our last holiday in Europe. Rome was our last port of call and alas the wallet was the only thing I could fit in my luggage. FIZBAG My leopard print Fizbag is a great shopper helper as I’m trying not to use plastic bags when shopping. MAP One of my friends is a great traveller. I carry a map of the world with me to keep me up to speed on her next adventure. TRAVEL BROCHURE Our next holiday is to Northern Italy, Croatia and Greek Islands so I’m at the stage of carting around brochures and reading them in coffee shops when I have time to spare. PRADA SUNNIES I don’t leave home without my sunglasses. I succumbed to having to use prescription sunnies last year so what better way than to do it with Prada. HAND CREAM I don’t travel anywhere without my tiny tube of hand cream. It’s from the Emirates Business Class toiletries bag as they really know how to treat you. COSMETIC BAG was a gift from a great friend who knows that it drives me nuts if I have to rummage through a huge bag to find my lippie etc. Problem solved with this pouch.
74 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2015 duomagazine.com.au
HYDRATION SPRAY Being on job sites for many years I always carry my Jane Iredale Hydration Spray as a pick me up. NUTS I’m always on some sort of fad diet so I carry a healthy nut snack. FOR EVER AND EVER Dior is my signature perfume. I love the size of the bottle as it fits perfectly into any bag. MALTESE CROSS A special keepsake as my Grandfather came from Malta and we were able to visit his youngest sister, who is 93, and other family in Gozo two years ago. They are wonderful wine makers and we sampled some of the finest wines on offer. LIPSTICK I love the new Refinery lipsticks and always manage to have one in the bottom of my bag at all times. DIAMOND AND TANZANITE RING I drooled over this at a shop in Dar es Salaam when visiting my son in Tanzania. After sadly passing it by and convincing myself I had more than enough jewellery my husband asked Tim to pick it up the next time he was in Dar and bring it back as a surprise for my birthday. It was even the correct size so was definitely meant to be mine. PEARL AND
MARQUISETTE EAR-RINGS
My granny gave these to me. As a child I played with them at her house when I raided her jewellery box for dress-ups and was cheeky enough to make off with them from time to time. Lots of people admiring them – they’re 60 years old! PHOTO My adorable grand-daughter, Nina Abigail, who stole my heart the day she was born. I miss her so much and try to visit as often as possible. iPAD I’m very organised so I like to have my iPad on hand. I bought this one in Perth in May and love the red case as it’s so easy to spot in my bag or on a table.

Liz Simonsen Tell us a little about yourself? I own a fashion styling business called Fashion Zen Style. I do personalised wardrobe makeovers, stylings, workshops and public speaking. I’m passionate about empowering women regardless of their age, size and social background to be the best that they can be through the power of clothing and fashion; to help create confidence and self-love. I am 50 years old and am a proud mother of two teenagers. My husband and I have lived in Townsville for 15 years but I am originally a Mt Isa girl. Describe your style: I have a very eclectic wardrobe and I don’t really have a signature style. The art teacher in me loves to experiment with colour and styles. Most treasured item: My mothers fur coat which is 40 years old. I have never worn it and I would never buy real fur but it reminds me of old school glamour and my European heritage. Labels you like: If I had all the money in the world it would be Dior, Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel, Vivienne Westwood. I love local designer Miss Elsie’s wardrobe for their unique vintage fabrics and dress styles. Your style Guru: Cate Blanchett for her edgy and unique style. A woman not afraid to make a statement and take risks with fashion. You’d never be caught wearing: Sporting gear as day wear no matter how much it costs. Wardrobe items you should part with but can’t: An Anthea Crawford big puffy black satin and organza skirt with a drop waist from the 80”s. Reminds me of my Big Hair days, high waisted denim 501’s and Duran Duran. Oh the memories! Anything else: Adapting, evolving and acceptance of change is the key to staying young. The number doesn’t count. It’s the mindset and the willingness to constantly embrace change that keeps you excited and young. Never compare, never explain, just live your truth and be authentic in everything you do including your wardrobe.

THE POWER OF TIME
Time is always on our mind. It allows us to plan and make the most of our days but does it control us too much?
In life we pay a lot of attention to time. We are always seeking to know how long something will take, how much time we have between commitments and the amount of time we have free. Frequent comments made by most adults relate to a lack of time when trying to accomplish all that we want to do. Can you honestly imagine a day or weekend in your adult life when you have not thought about what needed to be done or what had to be achieved to make it worthwhile? I think most of us would find that difficult. We also tend to feel guilty if we spend some time doing nothing. Even on our holidays we fill our time. The use of our time can consume us. We have given ‘time’ a lot of power over us.
We have given ‘time’ a lot of power over us.
Of course, coupled with the concept of time is planning and scheduling. Everything is planned or scheduled to the finest detail. We are bombarded with timetables, appointments, activities and commitments. I can’t imagine a day where those things don’t exist in some form or another. The planning of time has become a major exercise. It is part of our everyday thought patterns and we

purchase accessories to keep it all under control such as diaries, mobile phones and planners. Are we really in control though or does time have control over us? With so much planning going on, it stands to reason that the focus is also on the future. Let’s face it, we don’t plan a week that has already been and gone. We also don’t tend to leave today to chance. Today was organised weeks ago! With such an emphasis on the future though it means that ‘now’ has to really fight to gain our attention. Are we so busy organising the future that we don’t really see what is happening today? Do we miss or dismiss the moment we are experiencing right now? Our attention to future details can really disturb our experience and understanding of right now. Sometimes we will miss the most superb smile on our partner’s face, our friend pretending that everything is okay when it really isn’t or our child’s excitement with the dog chasing them in the backyard because our mind is concentrating on what is going to happen next.
concerned with something that occurred in the past or the energy is used to worry about something that might happen in the future. Experiencing what is happening right now though; that often builds on our energy levels due to the positive emotions that are awakened by the experience or we learn a lot about what is happening to us in that moment. We lose so much energy, drive and motivation due to our preoccupation with the past and future. The organisation of time is definitely a requirement for everyday living but we must also keep it in perspective. Time should not be dictating how we live our life. Instead it should be a tool for us to make the most of every experience possible that is happening to us right now.
All of this focus on time also requires a lot of our energy. We either expel energy by being

EWEN JONES MP | FEDERAL MEMBER FOR HERBERT
ROAR OF A LION, THE HEART OF MOUSE You know me, I don’t whinge. I just get on with it. Some people will always try to drag you down, no matter how hard you try. It is their nature. I am going to tell you a true story. Sure, some of the facts may be changed to make it interesting, but it is a true story. In fact, I don’t want to hurt anyone with this story, so I will only use the initials of the truly nasty person at the centre. Her initials are Linda Jones.
LIKE ALL MEN, I DIDN’T MAKE TOO MUCH OF THE SEARING PAIN SHOOTING UP MY LEG WITH EVERY STEP.
I was taking out the bins one morning. As I turned, I felt a shooting pain run up from the ball of my right foot to about 9 inches over the top of my head. I swore blue murder in my front yard. Fortunately my neighbours hear that every time I try to start the mower, so it went pretty much un-noticed. I had a massive splinter in my foot. The pain was tremendous. I was running late for work so I just soldiered on. That is just how I am. Linda did not even notice. Some may have noticed a limp. Like all men, I didn’t make too much of the searing pain shooting up my leg with every step. I got home that evening and gingerly took off my shoes. I asked Linda to have a look at it and she moaned and carried on like I was asking her to remove my appendix. She had a brief look and pulled out a shard of roofing iron about a foot long and about 2 inches wide. I refused the stitches it probably needed. I did not want to make a fuss about my pain. I kept it inside so I was not a burden.
Still the next day, and for a number of days, I limped. The pain was still tremendous. My wife, to the amusement of my family, would call for a “Whambulance” and ask me if I needed a teaspoon of cement to harden up. That is the sort of nonsense through which I had to carry on. Finally, Sunday came and a surgeon friend was over for lunch. He was obviously a brilliant diagnostician as he noticed my subtle limp and stoic approach to my pain. He looked at my foot and suggested that I was very close to losing it, such was the swelling and pain. Still Linda laughed. He suggested immediate surgery, but, through gritted teeth, I suggested I bathe it in hot salty water. I just didn’t want to be a burden. He reluctantly agreed. Linda rolled her eyes. Soon a splinter the size of a man’s arm came out. Did I mention it was wrapped in barbed wire? Linda was aghast that she had treated me so badly and begged forgiveness. Of course, my nature is that I accept the apology without rancour. I did, however, offer a few thoughtful pointers as to how she should improve her standing as a mother and carer in our family. I think she appreciated that. Where would we be without our loving families?
NICOLE PIEROTTI | CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST | BABYSMILES
CREATING A HOME FOR YOUR CHILD AFTER SEPARATION
YOUR ROLES MAY BE DIFFERENT BUT YOU ARE BOTH IMPORTANT TO YOUR CHILD’S IMMEDIATE DEVELOPMENT AND THE PERSON THEY WILL BECOME IN THE FUTURE.
How can you help them to adjust? This question weighs heavily on parents who are thinking of separating or are separated. Your one concern is that your child still feels loved. Usually both parents are very worried about the changes to come. Your home life changes and so does theirs. As the adult, you lose a partner in a separation but for children it is very different – they lose their family. Remember that your child has two parents. He/she may be your ex, but they are not an ex-father or ex-mother to your child. Both parents have an important and essential role to play in their child’s life. Your roles may be different but you are both important to your child’s immediate development and the person they will become in the future. A child must have a ‘home’, this brings emotional security and confidence. Where possible they should stay in the family home with the primary parent. If this isn’t possible try finding a house that is in the same neighbourhood, so that other networks are the same, i.e. they catch the same school bus to school with the same children, play with the same neighbourhood friends, use the same local shops and visit the same parks. We often underestimate how important these social networks are to our children. Children feel more secure if they have one main home and visit the other parent. Try to minimize what children carry
88 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2015 duomagazine.com.au
from one home to the other. It is relatively easy to have two night lights, two teddies. Try to avoid taking clothes back and forward. Think about keeping the change simple and double accessories such as phone chargers, have one in each house. Research shows us that, by keeping routines as similar as possible, the adjustment is easier. Having said that, it is okay to have differences in each home too. They can experience different food, conversations at their different homes, different TV shows. School is also very important in offering emotional stability in a child’s life so if possible keep their school the same. Children spend at least six hours a day at school and the support from teachers and friends and the routines at school give the feeling of security to your child. So changing schools is not advised if practical. As much as we may like to keep private issues to ourselves, life is much easier for your child if you gently let their teachers know what is happening in their life. Teachers can also then be on the lookout for changes in behaviour with your child; boys tend to become angry, or withdrawn and girls tend to become more teary when under stress. It is a time of change. As a parent you can help your child to cope by keeping their home as similar as much as possible to how it has always been.

LIVE TO GIVE
HELPING TO FEED THE HUNGRY IS ALL IN A DAY’S WORK FOR FOOD RELIEF NQ WAREHOUSE SUPERVISOR TOBY KELLY, WHO CELEBRATES 10 YEARS IN THE JOB THIS YEAR. WORDS + PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE DAVIS
CONGRATULATIONS TOBY WHEN TOBY KELLY heard Food Relief NQ were looking for volunteers, he didn’t hesitate to put his hand up. In next to no time, he became an invaluable cog in the organisation’s wheel and was soon employed to keep the warehouse running smoothly.
Pete can be found scooting around on the warehouse’s forklift, stocking shelves and making up pallets for other volunteers to pack hampers from. He started off volunteering one day a week but now comes in four days a week. “It keeps me fit,” Peter says, “and it’s fantastic to be working alongside people who have the same goal to help others.”
FAST FACTS
LOCAL LEGENDS
JOIN THE CAUSE
Toby and the team at Food Relief NQ are very grateful for the many local organisations who support their work. These include the Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise who pay Food Relief NQ’s energy bills.
Every year, Food Relief NQ distributes more than $1.5 million in terms of the retail value of their food hampers. It’s a big job and what would be a great help is if local businesses were to get on board and sponsor a pallet of food, even if for just one month of the year. “If someone could sponsor a particular item that we need, like cereal, canned products or longlife milk, it would make a huge difference,” says Food Relief NQ Warehouse Supervisor Toby Kelly. If you can help, call 4774 7620 or email foodreliefnq@bigpond.com.
“Every day I get to help someone so I go home happy,” says Toby, who works from 6am to 1pm five days a week making sure the Bohle-based Food Relief NQ warehouse keeps hampers coming for the hungry. Acting as a wholesaler of sorts, Food Relief NQ and its band of volunteers make it easy for local welfare agencies to come and collect hampers pre-packed to help families in need. “We also deliver hampers all over North Queensland, out to Cloncurry down to Mackay and north to Innisfail,” Toby says. “And together with the Townsville City Council, two Rotary Clubs and a Quota Club, we offer the School Breakfast Program to nine local primary schools.” Over the years Toby and Food Relief NQ’s 30 or so volunteers have become a tight-knit unit. “Their friendships are priceless and Pete has become like a father to me,” says Toby of 79-year-old Peter Knowles, who started volunteering with Food Relief NQ in 2003.

Around 80 charities are registered with Food Relief NQ, which operates out of a building in Bohle donated to the cause by the BM Webb Industrial Property group. As well as offering hampers for collection by welfare agencies, Food Relief NQ hampers are delivered all over North Queensland. The organisation relies heavily on financial sponsorship as it purchases around 70 per cent of the food needed to support the welfare industry in the North.

WHEN A HOUSE BECOMES A HOME
WHAT TURNS A HOUSE INTO A HOME? WHILE WE CAN CREATE A DESIRED FEELING WITH FURNISHINGS, STRATEGICALLY PLACED CUSHIONS AND UNIQUE ART WORK, IT’S THE SHARED LOVE OF THOSE INSIDE THAT TURNS A HOUSE INTO A HOME. BY PETER BAINES OAM (WWW.PETERBAINES.COM.AU)
The perceived property value, the views from the balcony or the size of the land is not going to turn a house into a home. But a woman with an endless amount of love for those often left without anyone to love them will turn the most modest of structures into a home of the highest order. Mae Thiew is a 56 year old Thai lady who grew up in a family with a father least considered a role model by many standards. He had several wives and reportedly was abusive of his treatment of women. Wanting a life different to the women around her she quickly realised that education would be her vehicle to escape the life of many women she had witnessed. Completing more than a couple of years at school was never a right for Mae Thiew or many like her, it was a privilege. But driven by the desire to give herself choices and not succumb to a life of abuse and servitude, she did all she could to remain in school. Graduating from High School, she continued to pursue her dreams and at the same time break the mould of those women around her by enrolling in University. During her years at university Mae Thiew would embark upon a journey that would set the path for her life and in so doing change the lives of thousands of children. Graduating from University she went to work supporting children and girls in particular in the Hill Tribes of Thailand, the most maligned and often forgotten about in all of Thailand. She would meet a doctor who was treating the children suffering from HIV and be encouraged by what she witnessed. Encouraged to the point that she returned to Bangkok selling all that she owned and moving to Yasothon in the Issan area of Thailand. Here she set up a home for children suffering from HIV. Her limited funds did not allow much by how we often measure the value of a “home”. There was no electricity, no running water and the home that she had built for herself and the children leaked during the heavy rains that rolled in each afternoon across
the rice fields. But the love she gave the children quickly turned this very modest building into a home. The name she gave this place for children who were given up on is aptly named Home Hug. This path was never going to be an easy one. It wasn’t just the cost of caring and feeding the children she now supported, but the medical needs and cost of medication for the children created a burden that sat heavily upon her shoulders. With the lack of regularity of income, so too was the inability to secure the medicine that was needed to sustain the life of these children. Many many children would die. Mae Thiew estimates in the 30 odd years that she has been running Home Hug over 1000 children have lost their fight for survival. 1000 children. HIV is no longer a medical problem, it is one of poverty. In the western world those with the virus can expect to live for another 50 to 60 years in a very fulfilling and meaningful life. The children of Home Hug were dying not because Mae Thiew didn’t care enough or hadn’t devoted enough of herself to these children, but because not enough people like Mae Thiew cared. But in the face of such adversity she continues the fight. And then she was given six months to live after a diagnosis of terminal cancer. In an incredibly cruel twist, she has for the past 10 years fought her own battle with terminal stomach cancer. How she is still alive is a bit of a mystery. I have seen her incredibly weak and more than once have I worried if I would return to Home Hug and see her alive again. I’ve said my final goodbye’s more than once. I entered her life in 2010 after I was told of her work and the challenges she faced on a daily basis in a fight for survival. I felt compelled to travel to Yasothon, a place I had never previously heard of to meet her. She entertained few males in her life and even fewer of those were western men. None of whom she would trust.
92 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2015 duomagazine.com.au
Her lack of trust in men, given her history was completely understandable and well founded. Many of the children in her care now or those who had not survived their fight for life were either born with the virus or were sexually assaulted and received a life sentence on top of the abuse they had endured. She’d seen the worst of men and it scarred her. During my first visit with Mae Thiew I watched and listened as she spoke with hatred in her eyes for all I represented. I was not welcome as too often the motives of males she had encountered were anything but as they presented. She was protecting her children from this western man who travelled from Australia to her home. The home of her 100+ children many of whom had HIV due to the sexual assault of them by men, some who must have presented just like me. But we started on a journey together, one that would change all our lives. I demonstrated my unconditional commitment to her and her children and over time she would come to tolerate, accept, welcome, trust and then love me. It is a deep kind of love that everyone should have in their life, but few could understand the honour of her love. During that first two years I made many solo trips to Home Hug to build the relationship with her. Slowly I became a welcomed visitor and we began to bring about change. The health of the children improved, their diet improved, their living conditions which I would previously describe as sad, they improved too. Best of all the children stopped dying. Mae Thiew learnt of the bike rides that we run in Thailand to raise funds for my charity Hands Across the Water. She wanted to be part of it. In 2011 she joined myself and the Hands riders as we rode 800km from Bangkok to Khao Lak. She wanted to present to the children an example of facing and dealing with adversity, of never giving up, no matter what.
F A M I LY M AT T E R S
On the last morning on the ride in 2013, the day that we would arrive at her home with all the children, she held me in her arms in one of her now customary strong grips, hugging me with the love that you have to experience to understand. In her broken yet clearly articulate English she said to me “For 26 years, I have never trusted a man. Now I trust you. I can die happy now, knowing you are here for the children. I love you.” Few sweeter words and no greater compliment has ever been offered my way.
Home Hug is a little drop of Humanity on this planet. We have transformed her original building and it now supports over a hundred children every night in a higher degree of comfort than when I first met her. But it is no more a home today than it was at the beginning, as the love for the children she cares for has never changed and that’s what turns a house into a home. Who knows how long she has left on this planet. I do know few on this planet are deserving of more time than her. www.handsacrossthewater.org.au/our-homes/

THE PROBLEM WITH BUSINESS OWNERS
and you are all the same…
I will do that, once I finish this. I will do that, when I get a chance. I will do that, when things settle down. Sound familiar? Do you ever actually do “that”? With the advent of the modern world and all the advantages technology brings, it also brings the negative of constant availability. Only a few years ago, one of my former bosses had a Blackberry (when they were the “IT” tool). We would travel to appointments. I would drive and in the passenger seat – glued to their phone – they would send “important” emails. I vividly remember thinking to myself “I can’t wait till I am important enough to have a Blackberry” so I too could exchange these emails. Fast forward to today and we all have smartphones with email, websites etc etc. Am I any more important because of it? Absolutely not. Does it make business easier? Absolutely YES. But ironically with all this flexibility it generally means we spend even more time working because we can never escape it!
Note the difference between working “in” your business and working “on” your business.
The problem with business owners, is they let the day to day running of the business take over from running the business. We all do it.
But just because a client has called, just because there is a backlog of work, or just because no one else can/will do your work for you, doesn’t mean you can’t take time out to enhance your business. In fact it is the absolute opposite. The moment that you can’t find the time to work on your business is the precise time you have to make some changes. Step 1. Make time There is nothing more ridiculous than someone who has ‘no time’. Make whatever excuse you want, but your business idol (whomever they may be) only has the same 24 hours as you do. Whether it has to be first thing in the morning, during the weekend or it’s the very last thing at night, make your own mandatory appoint to work on your business. Step 2. Prioritise your weakness List the issues you face and rank them in order. If you can’t acknowledge that there isn’t anything that can be done better – ask your staff. Ask your spouse. Ask your friends. Trust me, there’ll be plenty. Step 3. Design your Utopia What is the dream? How would you love to
do things? No limits! Write down how you’d things differently if there was no reason you couldn’t and then list what you think it will take to make the change/s. Step 4. Outsource This is the best part about being the boss! Now that you have an idea of what you would like to see changed/enhanced, engage a professional to MAKE IT HAPPEN. YES it will cost, YES it will be a hindrance and take some getting used to but YES it will be worth it! Whether you need to upgrade your technology to make life easier (this can be hardware i.e. faster computers/machinery or software such as new programs). Whether you need to engage an advertising consultant to work on your branding or whether you outsource your administration to focus on revenue generating processes – there is someone out there that is better than you at that job! Let them know what you want and let them do the hard work for you. There is a reason you started your own business and it was not so you could do more work. It’s time to make it happen.

EMERGING LEADER ANGELA BANNERMAN BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING MANAGER MACDONNELLS LAW
MENTOR KARI ARBOUIN ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR CQUNIVERSITY
IT WAS THEIR COMMON INTEREST in business development that brought Angela Bannerman and Kari Arbouin together as part of Townsville Enterprise’s Townsville North Queensland Emerging Leaders Program, but it was their passion for regional communities that ensured they hit it off. Having held a variety of roles in the energy, defence and legal sectors, Angela has spent much of her career travelling and working in most regional towns from Cooktown to Stanthorpe. “Throughout my career I have seen many talented people leave regional Queensland in the name of career progression, but in many cases, it is the view that it’s someone else’s responsibility to create those challenging and progressive roles in the local market,” Angela says. “That is why I joined the Program. I thought it would be a great way to put my hand up and say I’m ready to make my contribution to the development of regional Queensland, to create exciting opportunities for local talent and team up with people who had the same mindset,” she says. “As a CQUniversity Alumnus and Business Development Manager for MacDonnells Law, being granted CQUniversity’s Associate Vice Chancellor
Kari Arbouin as my mentor was an excellent fit for both of us to share our passion for regional skills development,” Angela says. Kari agrees: “The Program is really exciting as it harnesses the curiosity and ambition that is inherent in the upcoming generation of leaders and it aims to develop those traits in a way that builds accountability for advancing the region. Ultimately, participating in the Program means taking a stand to say, ‘this is your town, this is your future’,” says Kari. “I think the next generation is more informed and confident in where they’re going and have a propensity to tackle more complex problems at an earlier stage, so it is exciting to be developing these skills in a way that contributes in a measurable way to the community,” she says. Kari has an impressive career track record in business development in the health and education sectors and has recently established CQUniversity campus in Townsville and study centres in Karatha, Perth, Cannonvale and Charters Towers. “I’m inspired by the enthusiasm and commitment of people who are passionate about building their

communities and when I was offered the opportunity to become a mentor for the Townsville North Queensland Emerging Leaders Program I jumped at the opportunity,” Kari says. “I would have loved a mentor to be able to reassure me as to where I was going in my career and to provide a safe place to ask questions outside of the organisation I was working for.” “I’m looking forward to working with Angela in coming months on the Program as I enjoy being part of someone’s career development and growth.” Angela Bannerman Business Development and Marketing Manager MacDonnells Law Level 1, 131 Denham Street, Townsville 4722 0265
MENTOR ROB MCINTOSH CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER HONEYCOMBES SALES AND SERVICE
WITH A LONG CAREER spanning nearly 20 years in technology development with Fuji Xerox and a passion for improving people’s health, Scott Piper is an Emerging Leader to keep your eye on. Amongst the cohort of Townsville Enterprise’s Townsville North Queensland Emerging Leaders, he’s known as the one to motivate and push his colleagues further and after just five minutes with him you’ll appreciate why. “Townsville is a fortunate place. It are so diverse and occupies a great variety of opportunities; technology is one way that will help realise them. Technology is an enabler to so many things and, if used well, creates exciting possibilities. I plan to contribute to the region by combining my love of technology and the possibilities that it presents, with my passion for events that inspire a healthier lifestyle. “Through the Townsville North Queensland Emerging Leaders Program, we are working on ways to retain creative minds in the region and harness their ideas to further develop our community. This is something that really excites me.
EMERGING LEADER SCOTT PIPER TECHNOLOGY AND SOLUTIONS MANAGER FUJI XEROX BUSINESS CENTRE
“My mentor through the Program, CEO at Honeycombes Sales and Services, Rob McIntosh, has given me the drive to help carry these ideas forward. He’s always telling me “Don’t put a toe in the water – jump in and swim!” which is as simple as it is profound. “Rob’s the sort of person who takes the time to listen and you know he is always interested in what you have to say. He’s taught me the importance of listening because you never know what someone else can contribute to your goals until you’ve heard them. There is a lot of knowledge and experienced wrapped up in the man, that is for sure. “The future of our region is dependent on more people getting involved and jumping in to make things happen. Whilst we have a laid back attitude here, things don’t happen without people stepping up and getting involved.
“Creating more healthy families across the North is really important to me. I’ve recently put my energy toward developing the INBA Tropix fitness and bodybuilding shows which are now the largest in the region. The positive minds and passion that comes from these events create a great culture in the community. “I am hoping this culture can be harnessed to see our region’s greatest minds create innovative ways to share our healthy lifestyle with the world.” Scott Piper Technology and Solutions Manager Fuji Xerox Business Centre 85 Denham Street, Townsville 4759 9477
“I want to see more events created that attract people from far and near. For that to be realised, we need more people like Rob who are willing to jump in feet first to keep pushing us forward.

STILL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME?
More and more accounting practices are outsourcing offshore. So what does that mean for you?
The big four accounting firms make no secret of the fact they’ve been shovelling commoditised tasks offshore to protect profit margins. But do we not have the facilities and the people here to keep this work, and these jobs, at home in this country? The offshoring of jobs has generated criticism for a variety of reasons including employees concerned about losing their jobs and consumers concerned about the security of their data abroad. This is fair enough but research shows that there are numerous firms these days outsourcing their work overseas, and for good measure, to create those efficiencies and increase their bottom line, plus allow them the extra time to provide the quality service to their clients. This has been happening in firms for many years.
Security of the client’s information is essential whether the accountant is using an Australian or international bookkeeper.
Consider the accounting firm that supports the outsourcing option for bookkeeping work for clients on various ranges of software platforms. In their experience, the overseas counterparts are seen to be very capable, operating securely and cost-effectively. They note that privacy
laws apply to any and all outsourcing, whether overseas or in Australia, and the firm maintains disclosure is achieved through a declaration in their privacy policy within all engagements. Security of the client’s information is essential whether the accountant is using an Australian or international bookkeeper. The accounting firm and overseas counterpart utilises Citrix, for example, which is a ‘private cloud’-hosted computer system based in Australia. Individuals may log in from around the world using a certain type of terminal so no data leaves Australian shores and remains secure. On the other hand, there is also client resistance. There are clients who complain that if they knew the work had been outsourced to another country, they would’ve expected a reduced fee. They would’ve expected the accountant to pass that cost saving on to the client and not just retain 100 per cent of the benefit.
They expect a certificate/letter confirming that any outsourced facility adheres to the same data protection (or greater) currently available in our country. So long as the firm maintains full protection of client data, and maintains and discloses that they have an appropriate risk management strategy in place, then client concerns may be minimised. As the consumer, you have the right to question what protections are in place. You should feel free to ask if the firm is using offshore assistance and in what capacity. If so, do they pass on some cost savings to the clients? Does the firm still provide the best quality service and advice and do they properly disclose the handling of your personal information? Nine times out of 10 the answer is yes, but it’s worth checking so you’re at least aware of what’s going on. To be sure, read the fine print! For more on this topic please visit http://bit.ly/1SF6QmX
These clients understandably expect full disclosure from their accountant informing them of how their accounts have been handled and why.

For all of the momentous projects that have been undertaken by Gallery Services in the past three years - Brick by Brick and WOW, World of WearableArt to name but two - nothing has matched the community anticipation leading into Strand Ephemera. It’s only right that this anticipation is rewarded with something new, something exciting. I hope Strand Ephemera 2015 delivers on this objective. Presented by Townsville City Council, Strand Ephemera is the North’s Sculpture Festival and is proudly supported by major sponsor Glencore. Now in its 8th instalment, Strand Ephemera presents 31 stunning artworks this year.
Image: Andrew Rankin The Tree of Light, 300 x 500 x 250 cm, Acrylic mirrors, photographs and stainless streel. Entrant in Strand Ephemera 2015.
Strand Ephemera 2015 incorporates a new residency component. Zhi Qi Luo, a master artist from Townsville’s sister city - Foshan, China - has created work for this year’s show, marking a significant milestone in the relationship between our cities, and heralding what we hope will be the first of many more cultural exchanges in years to come. The visual feast in 2015 also engages two of Australia’s leading 3D Pavement Artists working in chalk. Jenny McCracken and Rudy Kistler will transform The Strand walkways, opening portals to new adventures and providing opportunities for visitors to get an amazing photographic keepsake of their Strand Ephemera experience. Three of the world’s best Sand Sculptors will also wow crowds with their large-scale creations. The Amazin’ Walter (USA), and Australians Peter Redmond and Jino Van Bruinessen have won numerous awards for their stunning sand creations, which we anticipate will be particularly popular with families. These are just some highlights from Strand Ephemera 2015, you may view the full program of events, artwork and entertainment on council’s website - I hope you enjoy. IS THE THEATRE STILL RELEVANT? Does it have any value in the Modern Age? The answer of course, is Yes. Because telling stories is what makes us Human.
One of my favourite topics of conversation is to contemplate what Human Beings have created entirely on our own. Most of our ‘inventions’ are really just imitations of nature. A car still contains the shape and attributes of a horse and we still measure them in horse power. Airplanes mimic birds, buildings mimic caves. Electricity imitates the sun. We control the weather in our homes by imitating summer or winter through our air-conditioners. Computers imitate our very own brains. Many types of species have structure and ‘civilisation’, tools to heal each other and skills to survive. Every colour and shape known to us can be found in nature. However, there is one thing that is unique. The act of passing on stories verbally and physically is quintessentially human. Human beings are the only species on this planet that creates Theatre. We haven’t copied it in any form from nature or any other animal. It is a phenomenon that has appeared in every civilisation around the globe. The passing on and creation of stories through Dance, Art and Theatre.
Good theatre is out there. Once you experience it, you will remember it for a lifetime.
And yes, nowadays, you can see these stories at the cinema or on your television or even on your phone, but in an age where screens dictate our lives, the theatre remains a space where human beings commune with each other to tell and hear stories. Some stories they are familiar with and this makes us feel understood and less alone. Other stories are unfamiliar, allowing us to feel empathy for others and expand our understanding of ideas that may be foreign to us. Unlike films or television that excel in achieving ‘reality’, in the Theatre, the pretense of make-believe is all around you. The audience can often see the lights, they know they are witnessing actors. However they agree to ‘suspend their disbelief’ in order to contribute to the story telling. Audience and Performers alike make a pact to ‘pretend’ and to give themselves over to their imagination, much as we did as children.
theatre. But this then raises the issue for some of you who say “I’ve been to the theatre. I didn’t like it.” It’s funny how when we see a film we didn’t enjoy, we don’t assume all films are bad. Or if we read a book that didn’t hold our attention, we don’t simply stop reading altogether. So why is this the way we look at the theatre? Perhaps you saw a poor production of a poorly written play. It certainly happens. But good theatre is out there, and once you experience it, I guarantee you will remember it for a lifetime. That’s what we set out to do. To change your world. Just a little bit. One story at a time.
But it doesn’t matter how much I preach, the only evidence you need is to get along to the

TOWNSVILLE CITY COUNCIL PRESENTS BELL SHAKESPEARE’S HAMLET BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTED BY DAMIEN RYAN experience it www.townsville.qld.gov.au
OFF THE BACK OF DIRECTING the critically acclaimed Henry V for Bell Shakespeare in 2014, Damien Ryan will deliver a new production of Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. Hamlet is a detailed family portrait in the political landscape of a “rotten” Denmark, a country furiously preparing for war, not realising that the enemy lies within. Damien Ryan delivers a new production of Hamlet, infused with the passion, contemplation and emotion that Shakespeare’s compelling poetry cries out for. Josh McConville (Griffin Theatre Company’s The Boys and Sydney Theatre Company’s Mojo) and Matilda Ridgway (Sport For Jove Theatre Company’s A Doll’s House) will delve into the depths of the complexity, violence, philosophical reflection, madness and maddening seduction of Hamlet.
dazzling intelligence, terror, casual slaughter, friendship, humanity, great humour and great grief,” Ryan said “Shakespeare casts his spell through the sheer scope and grandeur of this story – beginning with a dead man walking and ending with a stage littered with bodies.” The production offers a giant window to the inner machinations of Elsinore; a place where nothing and no one is ever safe from the prying, eavesdropping, awareness of others; an environment under insidious surveillance and secret tyranny. Presented by Townsville City Council, Bell Shakespeare’s Hamlet will show at Riverway Arts Centre on Thursday 9 September from 7.30pm. Tickets are $42 per person with concessions and student pricing available. For bookings and information, visit www.ticketshop.com. au or phone the Box Office on 4727 9797.

This critically-acclaimed play about life, love and football is an Australian audience favourite. This season stars David Ross Paterson as a loud, burly football fan, and Cecelia Specht as a recently divorced football widow, who claims her ex-husband’s season tickets as part of a messy divorce settlement. Trina is blissfully immune to the attraction of the game that she blames for the ruin of her marriage and instantly locks horns with her ex-husband’s footy-mate.

128 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2015 duomagazine.com.au
AKA: Bondy. You are renowned for: Being honest and reliable. What song reflects your personality: ‘Money for Nothing’ by Dire Straits. What overseas city would you love to move to: Marseille, France. It’s a beautiful part of the world with great food and wine and a lifestyle we should all embrace. As a child I always… was the guinea pig with my brothers and sisters. I was the first to jump off a bridge into the river, I was the one who got to stretch across the gap when rock climbing to be the bridge for my siblings. This didn’t end well. It was Dad rescued me moments before I couldn’t hold on any longer. If you had a superpower what would it be? Freeze time. I always think ‘if only I had more time’. What do you think about when you are alone in your car: How did these other people on the road get a licence? Right now I wish I was… on the beach at Bora Bora with my wife and no kids. It would be great to get a week’s peace and quiet. I’d miss my children and look forward to seeing them on our return. Favourite day of the year: Sunday, it’s the only day I don’t work. I get to spend time with my family and relax, there is nothing better than this. What is your trademark fashion style: Boardies, T-shirt and thongs. Last gift you gave someone: I bought my wife Connie a new watch for Mother’s Day but it was really a gift from our children. Best advice you have been given: Enjoy your life and make the most of it because you only get one shot! The best day of your life: There are a few, but when my daughter Piper was born and she grabbed a hold of my finger within 30 seconds of entering the world, that was pretty special. Pick two celebrities to be your parents: I’m sure my parents think they are celebrities sometimes so I don’t need any more. The motto you live by: Treat people the way I like to be treated, honestly and with respect.

AKA: Jo. You are renowned for: My work ethic. I’m always busy and taking on multiple jobs at once. An example is completing my degree while working and raising three children while my husband was deployed to the Middle East, so I was doing it solo. What overseas city would you love to move to: I would absolutely love to live and work in New York City. I have visited there a few times as an exchange / student paramedic and it is an amazing place. As I child I always… was playing outside and bossing my siblings around. I was quite the tomboy. What do you think about when you are alone in your car: Seeing my children and husband after a long day at work and just hugging them and talking to them. That makes all the unpleasant aspects of being a paramedic a lot more bearable. Right now I wish I was… On holidays with my family in some far away place we haven’t been to yet. Europe would be AMAZING. The one thing you can’t live without: A well made and good quality coffee. It can really turn a day or a mood around. A Redbull in the wee hours of the morning also runs a close second. What is your trademark fashion style: Lorna Jane pants and a t-shirt. Last gift you gave someone: Xbox One to my husband for our anniversary. Apparently this made me the coolest wife in recorded history? Best advice you have been given: Slow down. Life is too short and things go by without you knowing especially when you’re busy all the time. Enjoy what you have. Biggest regret: I don’t have any regrets. Any mistakes are lessons learnt. Where is the one place visitors to Townsville must see: The Strand. It is a beautiful place to eat, have coffee or just walk your dog. The best day of your life: The day I married not only the love of my life but my best friend. The motto you live by: Don’t take things for granted – you never know what will happen tomorrow.
AKA: Shezza, Mumsy, Mumma Bear. You are renowned for: Being caring, positive, nourishing, energetic, fit, understanding and a free happy spirit. What song reflects your personality: ‘Brave’ by Sara Bareilles. What overseas city would you love to move to: Somewhere in Canada, as it looks amazing, but I love Townsville and I wouldn’t move away from my family. As a child I always… Talked too much and never wanted to wear clothes. I love clothes now. If you had a superpower what would it be? Healing and Superhuman endurance. Right now I wish I was… On holidays in Bora Bora enjoying the beautiful ocean views drinking coffee/ champagne waiting to be pampered with a relaxing massage package. Favourite day of the year: Christmas as we have amazing fun filled family times. The one thing you can’t live without: My Beautiful family, friends and exercise. Townsville is a great place to live because… The Strand and Castle Hill, two fabulous places, where I love to exercise and relax. What is your trademark fashion style: Sporty Lorna Jane and Rockwear. In five years from now I hope I am… A Nana with a beautiful healthy grandchild to love, hold and spoil. Last gift you gave someone: It should of been my daughter’s 21st birthday present but I’m still looking for that perfect gift. Best advice you have been given: Enjoy life as it’s not a rehearsal. Biggest regret: Not to have become a personal trainer or to have studied nursing. Where is the one place visitors to Townsville must see: Strand/Castle Hill. The best day of your life: Becoming a mother. Pick two celebrities to be your parents: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for the love of their children. The motto you live by: Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.
AKA: Grandma. You are renowned for: The Best Fish & Chips. What overseas city would you love to move to: This is none better than Townsville.
