Foreword

Thank you for being here with us tonight at the Chamber @ Arts House. Being a freshly-formed chamber music group, we are very grateful for your support for and belief in us. With the generous support of the National Arts Council, we have also been able to commission two young Singaporeans to compose works for us. Having been bitten by the chamber music bug since our teens, we founded Duo Tarenna last year to explore a tiny slice of the vast string chamber repertoire. With orchestral activities put to a halt by the global pandemic, we initially started reading violin-viola duets out of convenience, but this soon spiraled into a common interest in sharing our love for the vibrant and often little-known works written for this instrumental pairing. Our duo shares the belief that contemporary music is not really as shocking or incomprehensible as it may seem; it can be fun and enjoyable while being new. Tonight’s programme spotlights four contemporary works that engage creatively with Chinese culture. Two ChineseAmerican works — Angel Fire Duo and Happy Tune by Bright Sheng and Chen Yi respectively, are based heavily on Chinese folk music. The two Singaporean works on the programme each take their inspirations from wildly differing sources. Joseph Lim’s Horse-Horse-Tiger-Tiger is a tongue-in-cheek take on a common Chinese idiom, while Lee Jia Yi’s Eclipse is conceptually inspired by the eponymous artwork of Singaporean-Chinese artist Eng Tow.

The last work on the programme, Three Madrigals by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu, has been a mainstay of the repertory since it was written. Despite drawing inspiration from music of a very different time and place, the work’s eclecticism strongly speaks to, at least in our minds, to the global and hybrid nature of contemporary Chinese culture. We share a firm belief in the transformative power of contemporary music. We hope that tonight’s programme will delight, surprise and inspire you in many ways. We are always looking for ways to connect with arts practitioners, based in Singapore and the greater Southeast Asian region if you would like to collaborate with us, or have comments or feedback about the performance, do let us know after the concert in person or through the post-concert survey, or via our email at duo.tarenna@gmail.com. A performer would not be whole without their audience; we are thrilled to be performing again to a live audience, and we hope to see you again in our future concerts! Thank you, and enjoy the show!

With much love, Tiag Yi and Cindy

Angel Fire Duo Bright Sheng While most often considered as a Chinese composer alongside his compatriots Tan Dun, Zhou Long and Chen Yi, Bright Sheng (b. 1955) has continued to forge his individualistic compositional style that deliberately combines different idioms. In Angel Fire Duo, commissioned for husband-and-wife duo Ida Kavafian and Steven Tenenbom, four characterful movements are presented, alternating between slow and fast. Sheng writes: Angel Fire Duo for violin and viola was written in 2014. It is commissioned by Music from Angel Fire with the support of the Bruce E. Howden, Jr. American Composers Project and Friends of the Festival. The premiere was given by Ida Kavafian, violin, and Steven Tenenbom, viola, on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at Angel Fire Community Center, New Mexico. The inspiration of the work largely comes from knowing that the work would be premiered by two wonderful virtuoso musicians, the wife-and-husband team of Ida and Steven. Even (or especially) in a love duo, a couple has to listen to each other all the time, just like in a good relationship. Yet there are also tensions and frictions which need to be resolved. Ultimately, the two must sing together and at the same time express themselves individually: just like in a good relationship. Except for the third movement which was based on a Chinese folk song from Shandong Province, musically the work was freely composed, in which I hope my multicultural bearing would somehow seep through. The work is dedicated to Pam, my dear wife.

(欧映泽部分翻译) The programme note for Angel Fire Duo is reproduced with the kind permission of Wise Music Classical Copyright © Bright Sheng 2014

⻢⻢⻁⻁

The Chinese idiom (Ma-Ma-Hu-Hu) is often used to deride an individual’s careless behaviour. Joseph Lim’s piece plays with this understanding of the idiom by first taking it literally, using a story to illustrate some of its meaning. As he notes: This piece is a short and irreverent musical painting of a common Chinese phrase, (Ma-Ma-Hu-Hu).The story in the music goes like this. A horse is out and about, prancing around in a carefree and rather reckless manner.

⻢⻢⻁⻁

However danger (tiger) soon lurks, resulting in a frantic chase. But it is too late to save the horse from its fate.

eclipse explores the idea of sounds interweaving and intertwining as well as the gradation of sound from dark to light. Inspired by Singaporean artist Eng Tow’s cloth relief of the same title, this piece treats the violin and viola duo as an 8string “meta-instrument”, traversing different textures and timbres together.

(欧映泽翻译) The programme note for eclipse is reproduced with the kind permission of Lee Jia Yi. Copyright © Lee Jia Yi 2022

Happy Tune Chen Yi Pioneering Chinese-American composer Chen Yi (b. 1953) often draws upon her vast knowledge of Chinese folk music, which she gained as a result of a period of study at the Central Conservatory of Music, for her own compositions. Regarding Happy Tune, she writes:: Composed to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Great Lakes Music Festival, my violin and viola duet HAPPY TUNE was written for Kim Kashkashian and Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, and premiered at the festival on June 16 2018. I fondly remember being invited by the GLCMF (directed by Prof. James Tocco) to be the dual Stone Composers-in-Residence with my husband Zhou Long, along with the Stone Composer Fellow Nicholas Omiccioli in 2011. We had a dozen of our chamber works performed excellently by the outstanding chamber ensembles and musicians during the week, meeting audiences and supporters of new music in various venues at the festival. The experience was truly inspiring, and I created HAPPY TUNE to honor the GLCMF, with hopes to carry on the high spirit in our new music society. In this duet, when one instrument plays a lively melody, the other plays a vivid rhythmic pattern in the accompaniment. The pair of string instruments imitates the sound of primitive Chinese folk song singing, as well as the Chinese traditional wind instrument sheng, a mouth pipe organ.

Three Madrigals Bohuslav Martinů Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1957) was born in what is now the Czech Republic, although he later moved to France to study with Albert Roussell and subsequently to the United States following the German invasion of France. His music assimilates diverse influences, reflecting Martinů’s awareness of contemporaneous musical developments and a reverence for music of the past. The title of Martinů’s work reveals his long-term love of English madrigals. The madrigal is a sixteenth-century genre of secular polyphonic music that originated in Italy and later spread to England. The English madrigal is generally characterised by lightness of mood, seen in the rather trifling texts used and the sparing application of contrapuntal devices. While Martinů’s work is certainly not insubstantial, the ebullience and fast-paced exchanges between instruments in its first and third movements (or madrigals) clearly reflect the influence of the earlier genre. The pensive second movement, however, seems to derive its inspiration from elsewhere. Here, the two instruments work more as a single unit to create different composite sonorities. The movement opens with bells tolling in the distance, gradually building in intensity before arriving in a serene chorale-like episode that serves as a conclusion. Given that Martinů spent the formative years of his life in a church tower (his father worked as a church sexton), it is perhaps inevitable that the sounds of the church music would have influenced his work. Taken together, the Three Madrigals thus represent a snapshot of Martinů’s multi-faceted musical world, one that drew inspiration from many sources. Programme notes by Tan Tiag Yi
