Laboratory work by PHARMBIOTRAC at Mbarara University of Science and Technology The center established and supports several laboratories at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). They include PHARMBIOTRAC production, pharmaceutical biotechnology and microbiology, pharmacology, and pharmaceutical analytical laboratories.

Due to the nature of programs offered at the center in the area of natural product development and standardization, several laboratory experiments are conducted in the labs, ranging from testing of drugs, biological assays, formulation of various products into tablets, syrups, etc., analysis and quality control of herbal medicines; plant tissue engineering and other biotechnological processes.

Therefore, several activities are implemented in these laboratories, as shown in the various pictorials. Our pool of postgraduate research works initiates some of these, but others stem from specific research projects on drug discovery and development.

From these laboratory experiments, we also accumulate preclinical data in natural drug development that informs subsequent decisions regarding the potential safety and effectiveness of medicinal products from plants and other natural sources.

Apart from research and product innovations, our laboratories also offer contract services to private industries or companies who need more capacity to carry out certain aspects of their manufacturing. For example, our analytical lab provides quality control services to several local industries producing phytopharmaceutical products. The production laboratory also offers contract manufacturing services to innovations and local herbal industries. These services are vital in supporting the private sector and also contributing to the socio-economic transformation of Africa. continued on page 26

Uganda, The Pearl of Africa As many of you may know, my journey to Uganda in December '23 and January '24 wasn't just a typical trip. It was a soul-stirring mission to a place with incredible beauty and heartbreaking need.

Let me take you back to where it all began.

It all started in 2018 when I heard about Buni Alex, or as I like to call him, Brother Alex. He's a pastor in a small rural church in Uganda, and his story touched me deeply. Alex had experienced bullying as a child, and one day, a particularly cruel incident left him shattered. A bully knocked him down and mocked him, calling him a chimpanzee. But instead of letting that define him, Alex turned to faith and prayer, seeking guidance on navigating his life.

Fast forward to the moment when Alex stumbled upon a book about bullying amidst the rubble of a community project in Tanzania. That book sparked a fire in him to make a difference. He reached out to the author, Ms. Marty Ward, who graciously allowed him to teach its lessons to children and parents in his village. That single act of kindness created a chain reaction of compassion and empowerment.

Through Marty's foundation, I had the privilege of joining hands with Alex and others to support their work in Uganda. From sponsoring children's education to funding water filtration projects and assisting families in need, I tried to make a difference, one small act of kindness at a time.

But in 2021, the foundation unexpectedly closed its doors as a result of Marty's untimely death, leaving many in the community without the support they desperately needed. I couldn't bear to abandon them, so I continued to do what I could, sponsoring children and helping with emergencies as they arose.

By January 2023, I found myself sponsoring fourteen children and doing whatever it took to ensure they had food on the table and access to essential services. But I knew I couldn't do it alone. That's when the idea of collaboration took root—a collective effort to create sustainable solutions and make a lasting impact in Uganda and beyond.

And so, armed with determination and a heart full of hope, I embarked on a journey to Uganawithith a team of collaborators readying themselves for an opportunity to share what they have to a coordinated effort of humanitarian impact. Together with Past or Alex and another Pastor, Stephen (he volunteered to assist me and traveled from Tanzania), I visited communities far and wide, witnessing both the breathtaking beauty of the land and the stark realities of poverty and need.

Out of Africa How PHARMBIOTRAC Can Change the World

by David J Dunworth I am genuinely excited to introduce colleagues who are literally on the cusp of changing the planet. Medically, that is.

What do I mean? Specifically, the PHARMBIOTRAC team is hard at work identifying, growing, and processing the ancient secrets of traditional, plantbased medicine into dosage formulas.

Really.

They are converting pure formulas of plants to address uniformity in dosage. I traveled to Uganda to meet with the leadership to learn what they are producing that ben benefit the world.

I was fortunate to meet them along with Vice-Chancellor Professor Celestino Obua (not pictured here) in Dallas, Texas, at the 2023 Uganda North American Association Conference. As I have been supporting children in Uganda since 2018 and am planning to bring a collaboration of services to the country, it only made sense to attend the annual conference—a very fortunate turn of events.

Because of my intent to visit distant rural villages throughout the country, we immediately made a notable connection—the PHARMBIOTEC program of educating master’s and Ph.D. level scientists that would venture into the bush to evaluate, perform medical tests for disease and identify possible candidates to learn the dispensation of these natural remedies in pill, capsule or syrup forms.

I ventured to Uganda during the months of December 2023 and January 2024. Me and my team from TAG 4 Change (a certified NGO in Uganda) had the pleasure of spending a full day with the leadership of the program, visiting the specially formatted gardens (there is a section for each region of Uganda so specific plants and their variances to each other area). We toured the laboratories, witnessed several research activities, were lectured by team leadership, and enjoyed informal meetings with key personnel.

In addition to natural medicine, PHARMBIOTRAC is also working on a social-entrepreneurship model. Interested and qualified citizens are encouraged to apply for acceptance into the program. An innovative idea that is found to be scalable will then qualify for initial funding, assistance with formulation, business planning, branding, marketing, and ultimately, assistance in launching.

An Eastern and Southern Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence Project at Mbarara University of Science and Technology

(PHARMBIOTRAC), Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST), P. O. Box 1410, Mbarara, Uganda Corresponding author:tolocas@must.ac.ug Abstract A regional approach to higher education in Africa offers the best way to build and sustain excellence in higher education in African economies, and to develop the human resources required to address key development challenges facing Africa. One of the critical development challenges facing Africa is a low life expectancy and productivity compared to other continents, majorly due to a high burden of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, a situation made worse by inadequate yet expensive good quality drugs not easily accessed by the population. Yet Africa has a rich biodiversity that forms the continent’s natural wealth on which its social, cultural, and economic systems are based, and this is particularly true for eastern and southern African regions.

Traditional Medicine (TM) and Traditional Medicine Knowledge (TMK) systems form part of this wealth but have not been science-driven to improve the region's quality of life and productivity.

Apart from TM, African biodiversity has enormous potential to produce modern drugs such as highvalue biopharmaceuticals, but it has yet to be scientifically explored and developed.

Biopharmaceuticals are therapeutics derived from biological or living organisms through pharmbiotechnology applications. While several other factors may contribute to the under-exploitation of TM, TMK systems, and the low application of pharm-biotechnology to biodiversity in Africa, the critical factor remains largely an inadequate number of scientists specializing in TM and pharmbiotechnology. To respond to this gap, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), through the World Bank’s African Centres of Excellence (ACE) initiative is creating, in the region, a unique framework by establishing “Pharm-Biotechnology and Traditional Medicine Centre” (PHARMBIOTRAC) to build capacity in the region to train and raise a critical mass of specialized and skilled human capital that can use multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach to advance traditional medicine and pharm biotechnology. The specialists to be produced at this centre will be experts in critical areas, including reverse metabolomics, genomics, and proteomics (molecular characterization, structural elucidation, and modification of drug molecules or drug receptors) with the potential to spur drug discovery, and specialists in the production and use of high-value biopharmaceuticals and TM products for uptake by pharmaceutical and herbal medicines industries in the region and beyond. Through linking research and education to industry, the research outputs and the graduates of PHARMBIOTRAC will be absorbed by the private sector industry to mass produce high-value, science-driven TM products, and biopharmaceuticals highly needed for disease control and prevention worldwide.

Helping British Columbia’s health sector digitize and automate COVID-19 data Responding to constituents’ questions regarding their health and safety is a top priority for government agencies around the world. Drawing upon a long-term partnership with the British Columbia Ministry of Health, CGI collaborated with Google and five provincial government agencies to rapidly develop an AI-driven chatbot leveraging Google DialogFlow in just 2 weeks.

The result: The AI solution interprets and answers citizens’ questions using natural language processing (NLP) and provides incontext decision-support for health workers. The solution immediately streamlined and reduced the volume of queries on the Healthlink 811 call line by giving a single source of information through an AI channel. This solution has been extended across the British Columbia health sector, such as with an AI virtual agent that includes a live hand off to a nurse, as well as with a digital scribe that records the virtual transcript as part of the patient file.

Providing an immediate response British Columbia health and government executives quickly mobilized to discuss and implement a Google Cloud AI solution to help the province best respond to the pandemic as well as ongoing health system solutions postpandemic. As part of these discussions, leaders brought in CGI experts who are seasoned in such areas as data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and epidemiology. While discussing strategies to create various data dashboards to track and predict the spread of the virus, the conversation turned to ideas for how to manage the volume of calls and long wait times for the province’s 811 health helpline. Quickly, a solution was born: Develop a chatbot that helps triage questions, directing constituents to the right services and answering pressing questions in a matter of seconds.

Practiced around the world, throughout thousands of years of human history, herbalism today is built on generations of practical and anecdotal wisdom. And women are largely to thank as stewards of this ancestral knowledge.

Herbalism in America is an eclectic tapestry, woven together by the histories and traditions of all those who have come to live on this land. As women cared for their neighbors and kin, and they began to learn the land, exchange occurred—an exchange of culture and knowledge. As these ancestral keepers of herbal wisdom shared seeds and passed along stories about keeping their communities well, a new lineage of herbal trailblazers was born.

Early Days

Excerpt from the Grant Application Paper by Dr. Casim Umba Tolo Africa has a rich biodiversity that forms the continent’s natural wealth on which its social, cultural, and economic systems are primarily based. Yet, Africa still has a low life expectancy and economic productivity compared to other continents. This is majorly due to a high burden of infectious diseases such as malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, etc., and now also rising cases of non-communicable diseases, hence causing a dual health challenge. Non-communicable diseases such as cancers, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, obesity, and chronic respiratory disease are becoming rampant killer diseases and are predicted to overtake infectious diseases in the near future.

This situation is made worse by inadequate yet expensive drugs, and even where drugs are available, counterfeit drugs continue to flood the market, with up to 35% of antimalarial drugs accessed by the population reported as being counterfeit products. However, for ages, Traditional Medicine (TM) and Traditional Medicine Knowledge (TMK) systems have formed part of Africa’s wealth but have not been science-driven to improve quality of life and productivity in the region (e.g., Ogwang et al.,2008; Weathers et al., 2014; Ogwang et al., 2015). Apart from TM and TMK,

biopharmaceuticals, but it has not been scientifically explored widely and developed. In addition, very little work has been done to clinically validate TM and TMK. The lack of clinical evidence creates a huge knowledge gap that limits its use by biomedical health practitioners. This, in turn, limits potential investment in TM-related drug discovery and product development by the private industry.

While several other factors may be contributing to under-exploitation of TM and TMK systems and low application of pharm-biotechnology in Africa, the key factors remain inadequate number of scientists specialized in TM and pharmbiotechnology, lack of multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary research teams, lack of appropriate equipment and skills, lack of specialized training in the region to raise the critical mass of scientists in TM and pharmbiotechnology, poor linkages with private sector and non-involvement of TMK holders in the training and research programs. To address the above challenges,

driven TM products and biopharmaceuticals to address not only the development challenges of Africa but also to preserve the local biodiversity. The ACE will create a conducive and enabling environment for curriculum review and development to create specialization on science-driven TM and pharm-biotechnology training, research, and product development at the postgraduate level.

Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, the Pharm-Bio Technology and Traditional Medicine Centre (PHARMBIOTRAC) will be the region’s center of excellence (Arbo and Benneworth, 2007; Salmi et al., 2016) in science-driven TM and Pharmbiotechnology.

The centre will specialize in systematic identification, documentation, mapping, conservation, commercialization, harvesting, extraction, isolation, characterization, structural elucidation and modification of active molecules from plants and other life forms for the production of high-value science-driven TM and biopharmaceutical products for uptake by pharmaceutical and herbal medicines industries in the region.

The main objective of PHARMBIOTRAC is to build a critical mass of specialized and skilled human resources that can advance traditional medicine and Pharm-Biotechnology for the socio-economic development of Africa. The specific objectives are to: i. Strengthen capacity in the region to train highly skilled and specialized professionals in traditional medicine and Bio-pharmaceuticals; ii.

Strengthen capacity in the region to engage in cutting-edge research in TM and systems biology for health products development, iii. Create capacity in collaboration with private sector industry for developing, producing, and commercializing TM, biopharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals from research outputs; iv. Advance the practices of TM/TMK in the region and promote domestication and sustainable utilization of medicinal species.

Operationalization of PHARMBIOTRAC Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is mandated to teach both undergraduate and graduate programs (MSc and Ph.D.), as well as short courses. The University also promotes the transfer of scientific knowledge and innovations to the community for sustainable societal transformation. PHARMBIOTRAC will attract multidisciplinary students from the region, including botanists, biochemists, chemists, pharmacologists, engineers, pharmacologists, pharmacists, microbiologists, biotechnologists, entrepreneurs, and train them through transdisciplinary approaches to build teams for joint projects and enterprises. PHARMBIOTRAC will use scientific methods to improve TM products and to identify active molecules that can be developed into biopharmaceuticals. To achieve its goal, PHARMBIOTRAC will augment its existing teaching faculty by attracting and recruiting specialist hands-on scientists and practitioners from the region and mentoring them in collaboration with professors from partner universities in the USA, India, and South Africa. The centre, through the transdisciplinary approach of graduate training and specialization will support the development of science-driven TM products and biopharmaceuticals, leading to their commercial production in the region by private sector industries. Through linking of research and education to industry, the research outputs and the graduates will be absorbed by the private sector industry to mass produce high-value science-driven TM products (e.g. Weathers et al.,

2014; Ogwang et al., 2015)) and biopharmaceuticals which are highly needed for disease control and prevention worldwide.

The application of Pharm-biotechnology, particularly systems biology, will spur drug discovery, which in turn would lead to the production of biopharmaceuticals for national, regional, and international markets. In addition to the biopharmaceutical industry, the graduates of PHARMBIOTRAC will serve as faculties in partner universities and other organizations in the region to train more specialists in TM and biopharmaceuticals.

Over the project period of five years, PHARMBIOTRAC is envisioned to have some significant outputs, not least producing specialized and highly skilled graduates who can contribute positively to validating the efficacy of TM with clinical evidence.

This is expected to promote use of TM by biomedical health practitioners, leading to potential investment in TM related drug discovery and products development by the private pharmaceutical industry, hence improving quality of life and productivity of the people in the region. Table 1 provides summary of the expected results of PHARMBIOTRAC and anticipated impacts.

Europe’s Folk Herbalists & Colonial Massachusetts’ “Witches” During the Dark Ages in Europe, most people had to rely on their local community, usually folk healers with no formal training, to take care of their health. The midwife tradition emerged as a way for women to care for their families and neighbors, and share the generations of herbal knowledge. But to do this in the Western World risked social and religious persecution because women’s roles were heavily regulated by a church that condemned the pagan herbal practices of the past. Hildegarde von Bingen, a 12th century Benedictine abbess, dedicated half her life to sharing her revolutionary musings around viriditas, or “the energy of the green.”

Her teachings laid the groundwork for Traditional European Herbal Medicine, leading many historians to consider her one of the most significant scientists of Medieval Europe. Many of these herbal remedies can be found in her book, Liber Simplicis Medicine.

Five-hundred years later in 1692, the Salem Witch Trials of Colonial Massachusetts were based on much of the same suspicion, dismissing women who communed with spirit and interacted with nature as “practicing the Devil’s Magic.” While the local government pardoned these women, and the trials were declared unlawful in 1702, 19 people—mostly women—were condemned to death by hanging, and 200 were accused of witchcraft. By 1708, Nicholas Culpepper’s English Physician was published in America, offering puritan communities of the New World greater insight into plant medicine, while likely dismissing some suspicions around it.

Native and Slave Women in the Era of “The New World” When Europeans first began settling the Americas, they relied on the plant wisdom of the indigenous peoples, particularly women, who had the task of identifying and collecting herbs and caring for their families, whether they were designated medicine women or the wives of medicine men. From the 17th to 19th centuries, the medicine of Native American women and African-American slave women had proved often more advanced than European herbalism, teaching European immigrants, African slaves, and later, the 19th-century Eclectics, about a holistic and spiritual approach to wellness.

Although many slave owners forbade the practice of herbalism, thought to be “the devil’s work,” the slave communities of the Antebellum South benefitted from “grannies.” These female herbal healers based their practices on ancestral African traditions, while readily experimenting and collaborating with Native Americans to find herbal counterparts in the New World. As Native and slave communities were discouraged or forbidden from reading and writing, the oral tradition of herbalism became more critical to its survival. Harriet Tubman is said to have used herbal medicine for keeping escaping slaves healthy on the Underground Railroad, as well as on Union soldiers in field hospitals during the Civil War.

Women of the Herbal Renaissance Fortunately, much has changed in the last hundred years, and American women of all colors and beliefs are now practicing herbalism unafraid and in the open. But until the 1960s and 1970s, the craft of herbalism was in danger of being lost. The counterculture and back-to-the-land movements of the time challenged this thinking and paved the way for the Herbal Renaissance, thanks in part to

herbalists like Nancy Philipps, Deb Soule, Margi Flint and Rosemary Gladstar, “the Godmother of American Herbalism.” In addition to co-founding Traditional Medicinals, Rosemary also founded the California School of Herbal Studies—the first herb school in the United States, the International Herb Symposium, and United Plant Savers, while authoring 13 books. These women have mentored a whole new generation of herbalists and activists.

The Next Generation of Herbalists Perhaps the most enduring gift of the women of the Herbal Renaissance is the new generation of herbalists—of all colors and creeds—who are finding ways of making herbalism more approachable.

This new generation of female herbalists has founded nonprofits, companies, wellness centers, and blogs, teaching herbalism with modern relevance. To name a few contemporary trailblazers: the Herbalista Free Clinic brings underserved communities herbal health care on buses, The Kosmic Kitchen teaches preventative care through the incorporation of herbs into daily cooking, Angelique “Sobande” Greer founded the first African-American school of herbalism, Linda Black Elk teaches on ethnobotany and restoration ecology, and curandera Tonita Gonzales is re-introducing traditional herbal sweat lodge practices in New Mexico.

As new science catches up with old wisdom, folk herbalism will continue to prove its relevancy.

The state-of-art equipment is highly useful in concentrating the extracts to their respective powdered form and they can be lyophilized up to the time of use without altering the chemical composition.

Apart from analyzing the crude drugs through the identification of various chemical groups. The laboratory is into the isolation of active components from crude drugs either by targeting a molecule or through activity-directed purification and with the state-of-the-art equipment in the MUPCARL the purity can quickly be ascertained. On November 16, 2022, Prof. Ogwang won an innovative research award from Global Peace Foundation because of his outstanding commitment to fight Covid-19 Pandemic using indigenous knowledge and herbal medicine.

Together with partners in Uganda, Global Peace Foundation conducted a countrywide survey and Prof. Ogwang Patrick was identified and recommended as an authority in research and innovation. He was awarded during the National Dialogue on Sustainable Future which took place on November 16, 2022 at Imperial Royale Hotel Kampala. Prof. Ogwang Patrick is an inventor of COVIDEX, a natural herbal for supportive treatment in the management of viral infections (Covid-19) under his Jena Herbals Uganda Ltd. He is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy in the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, a Medical Researcher, Entrepreneur and Executive Chairman of Jena Herbals Uganda Limited. He is also the immediate Past President of the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda, a body that governs pharmacists and their practices in Uganda. But amidst the struggles, we also witnessed resilience, strength, and a deep sense of community.

Reflecting on our journey, I'm reminded of the power of compassion and the importance of standing together in solidarity with those in need. And while the road ahead may be extended and challenging, I'm filled with hope and determination to continue making a difference, one step at a time.

In each village, we were welcomed with warmth and hospitality, a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Ugandan people. From the shores of Lake Victoria to the rolling hills of the Eastern Region, we listened intently to the stories of hardship and hope shared by villagers eager to improve their circumstances.

In the rural communities, we witnessed the daily struggles of families living without reliable access to electricity or basic infrastructure. Children walked long distances to attend school, braving treacherous roads and unpredictable weather conditions. Yet, despite these challenges, the residents had a palpable sense of determination and perseverance, fueled by their unwavering belief in a better future.

Having met the leadership team of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology’s PHARMBIOTRAC department, they were on our list of must-visit places. These fine people are working on something that can change the face of the planet forever – Natural Medicine in Dosage form. Instead of “healers” offering ancient remedies that can help or hurt the affected, they can be assured the patient will live through the treatment protocol. You see, these people in the village with handed-down knowledge often have little idea how much or how little to tell the sick person to take.

Mortality from “best guess” medical treatment is nearly half of the healed count.

I’m ecstatic that we made two trips to the University, as we are counting on identifying our communities as candidates to send the Ph.D. scientist to introduce this world-changing medical protocol.

As we journeyed further west, towards the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the landscape transformed into a patchwork of lush greenery and fertile farmland. Here, we encountered communities grappling with the devastating effects of conflict and displacement as refugees poured across the border in search of safety and refuge.

A little-known fact: Uganda is one of the poorest countries in Africa, yet it houses more refugees than any country on the continent. These people escaped war and poverty, only to barely exist in a country that cares. What aid does make it past the thieves, scoundrels, and warlords (and a good part of governments) is little to impact the hunger and lack. continued on page 34

In the face of such adversity, it was heartening to witness these communities' incredible resilience and solidarity as they banded together to rebuild their lives and support one another in need. From the bust remote villages of the Karamoja region to the western border of DRC, we were reminded time and again of the profound interconnectedness of humanity and the importance of standing in solidarity with those in need.

Our journey through Uganda was a voyage of discovery and a call to action. As the only westerner, I marveled at the country's natural wonders and embraced its rich cultural heritage. However, we were confronted with the stark realities of poverty, inequality, and injustice that persist in many corners of the globe.

As global citizens, we must heed the call of those whose voices are often unheard and whose struggles are frequently overlooked. We can help create a more just and equitable world for all by amplifying their stories and advocating for meaningful change.

Ultimately, our journey through Uganda left an indelible mark on my heart, igniting a flame of compassion and commitment to service that will guide my actions for years to come. As we continue our quest for a better tomorrow, may we never forget the lessons learned and the bonds forged amidst the beauty and need of this remarkable land.

Overinflated Egos: A Story to Learn From Imagine: You're in a meeting, and your boss turns to you with a smile and says, "Your professionalism is outstanding."

Sounds like a compliment, right?

Well, hold on a second. What if underneath that smile, there's a hint of superiority? What if that compliment isn't as friendly as it seems?

See, here's the thing about leaders with big egos – they sometimes don't realize when they're being, well, a bit arrogant. They'll toss out phrases like, "With more experience, you'll perfectly grasp what I'm saying," or "Your ambition is remarkable, given your background." At first glance, they might sound encouraging. But dig a little deeper, and you'll find a subtle sting hidden within. My grandfather used to call those types of comments, “Left-Handed ones.”

These kinds of comments, often called "backhanded compliments" or "microaggressions," are like sneaky little jabs disguised as praise. They're not always meant to hurt but can still leave a mark. And here's the kicker – the person saying them might not even realize they're doing anything wrong.

Take, for example, a boss telling you, "You did exceptionally well, considering your limited prep time." On the surface, it might seem like they acknowledge your hard work. But read between the lines, and you might hear, "You did pretty good, considering you didn't have much time to prepare – but let's be real, it could've been better."

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying every leader who dishes out these compliments is a villain. Often, it's just a case of misguided good intentions. They're trying to be nice but end up putting their foot in it instead.

So, how do we fix this? Simple – leaders need to check their egos at the door and treat everyone with respect, regardless of rank or experience. Instead of talking down to people, they should lift them. Instead of focusing on status, they should focus on merit.

When leaders ditch the ego and embrace equality, the magic happens. No more sneaky jabs disguised as compliments. Just genuine praise and mutual respect all around.

The moral of the story? Even the best intentions can go awry if ego gets in the way. So, leaders, let's leave the backhanded compliments behind and focus on building each other up instead.

After all, there's no room for sneaky jabs in a team aiming for success.

I was booked to do a keynote at the annual conference of a national firm’s Mental Health Practitioner partners. I was speaking on the subject of Marketing to grow their practices. So, I dug deep into my story vault and settled on a story about myself. The story was delivered to underscore how I can relate to their patient group.

Imagine, for a moment, a little five-yearold boy. He’s wearing a sad face, his eyes tearful, and his mouth turned down into a frown of despair. Mom is at the kitchen sink clearing up the breakfast dishes.

This little boy is standing in the small kitchen of his upstairs apartment, staring at his mother’s back.

The thoughts he is trying to gather coherently seem incapable of being expressed at first, but after a moment or two, he blurts out: “Momma, I’m running away from home.” His mother turns suddenly, looks lovingly down at him, and says, “What’s wrong, little one?” Her posture instinctively goes from standing to crouching, face-to-face with her son.

“I’m not happy here, so I want to live someplace else,” he slowly and tentatively mutters. Mom responds, “Please tell me what’s wrong, honey.”

She looks at his tearful face and gently wipes the tears from his cheeks.

“Daddy doesn’t like us and always shouts at you and me.” It makes me shake every time he does that. Then he slams the door and goes to work. I only feel good when he’s gone.” Mom is stunned yet all too familiar with what this cherub shares with her. Her heart is breaking. continued on page 48

It's been found that images and visual materials have the unique ability to broaden our thought processes, enhancing creativity, problem-solving, and cognitive flexibility. How does this happen? Well, when we engage with visual materials, multiple regions of the brain become active simultaneously.

It's like a symphony of neural activity, with different brain areas harmonizing to process and interpret the visual information.

One key mechanism behind this cognitive expansion is the formation of mental imagery.

Visualizing objects, scenes, or concepts creates mental representations that enhance our understanding and retention of information. Think of it as painting a mental picture – by visualizing a complex idea or problem, we can break it down into more manageable components and explore different perspectives.

“Is there anything else you want to tell me?”

Mom softly inquires. “If Daddy is going to live here, I am leaving now. You can come too if you want to.” Mom slowly begins to stand up as she holds both of her child’s hands. She is looking down at him now, not sure what to say. Nothing seems good enough of a response to repair the pain and hurt both she and her son are experiencing.

They live in a two-flat where the bottom porch is elevated steps about a dozen to ground level. The top porch is the short landing at the top of the inner staircase.

Finally, after some thought, she says, “Well, if you are going to run away from home, you better take some cookies with you for the journey.” Slowly, she turns toward the kitchen cabinet housing his favorite treats. “But you know the rules, don’t you?” She inquires.

“Unless Mommy or Daddy are with you, you cannot leave the porch.”

After a long pause, I state, “That little boy grew up with PTSD from the verbal and eventual physical violence. It went on until he left home at nineteen to join the military. As the years passed and the occasional visit to see his parents, he yelled about something nonsensical whenever he heard his father’s elevated negative voice. The boy’s PTSD would kick in. He couldn’t manage the incredible fear that washed over him.

The boy looks at his dear mother in a gaze of disappointment and says, “Yes, I know.” She gives him a handful of fig bars into his hands.

He turns slowly toward the apartment door and steps into the short hallway. The steps down to the first floor are before him, and he is struck with indecision. Mom says to him as he heads out the door, “I love you and will miss you. Can I come and visit sometimes?” Sure, that would be nice, he replies.”

Our little traveler hears the door close behind him, still uncertain of his next action. His mind is trying to understand what his mother said or didn’t say - the rules are you cannot leave the porch. Did she mean the top porch or the bottom porch?

The boy decides that the top porch is far enough.

Mom and Dad will understand.

As I look out at the audience, I see that every eye is focused directly on me.

He has spent decades in therapy and is on a lifetime regimen of Manic-Depressive medication.

He sees a psychiatrist and therapist to this day.

That little boy stands before you.

I shared this tale with you to let you vividly feel its potency, to let it unfold within the theater of your mind. Each of us here possesses a narrative, a unique testament waiting to be voiced to the world. I am confident I’m not the only one whose experiences echo with someone else here. Such is the magnetic pull of genuine stories; they have the might to seize an audience’s undivided attention.

Even if they have never experienced what the story is painting in the canvas of their mind, they can picture it because of the description.

Learn from my friend who confided in me about her cautionary tale, and explore the risks of selecting the wrong financial advisor. To keep her fictional, let's refer to her as Trixie.

Before you entrust your lifetime's worth of saving and attempting to live out your days in relative comfort, take the time to perform thorough due diligence so that you don't fall prey to the wrong person handling your wealth, regardless of how much or little it might be.

Meet Trixie, a young woman whose insatiable curiosity often led her down unexpected paths. While curiosity can be a valuable trait, it can also be a double-edged sword, as Trixie would soon discover.

Trixie's journey is a cautionary tale for those seeking to secure their financial future through prudent retirement planning.

Trixie's curiosity knew no bounds. She was always eager to explore new ideas, places, and experiences. However, her thirst for knowledge sometimes led her to seek information in questionable areas. Instead of heeding warnings and exercising caution, Trixie plunged headfirst into the unknown, driven by her insatiable curiosity and desire for adventure. Unfortunately, her lack of discernment soon led her into unfamiliar territory, resulting in unforeseen consequences.

Selecting the wrong financial advisor can devastate your retirement savings and overall economic well-being. The dangers are manifold, from inexperienced advisors lacking the necessary expertise to unscrupulous individuals driven by self-interest.

What works for one person may not necessarily be suitable for your unique circumstances, as Trixie learned the hard way.

Trixie initially trusted the recommendations of friends and family without fully considering her financial goals and preferences. Unfortunately, this led her to a financial advisor whose investment strategies were not aligned with Trixie's unique circumstances.

For example, Trixie's friend enthusiastically recommended a financial advisor who had helped them achieve impressive investment returns. Without conducting research or considering her risk tolerance and retirement goals, Trixie mindlessly followed her friend's advice and entrusted her savings to the same advisor. However, Trixie soon realized that the investment approach favored by her friend's advisor was too aggressive for her comfort level, resulting in unnecessary stress and anxiety as market fluctuations affected her portfolio.

Associate Professor Robert Tamukong; BSc, MSc, Pharm.D, PHD Friends of PHARMBIOTRAC Foundation Founding Board Member Professor Tamukong is Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy Practice and Chair of postgraduate research and training in the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Uganda, where he engages in teaching, research, supervision & examination of students, curriculum development, clinical practice, community engagement, administration, leadership, mentorship and consultancy in healthcare and academia. He also serves as program coordinator of the first-ever Master of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy program in Uganda, which he conceived in 2017 and was accredited by the Uganda National Council of Higher Education in 2018. Prof Tamukong holds a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) degree from the University of Minnesota in the USA and a PhD. His teaching, research, and practice interests are in the areas of pharmacy practice, clinical pharmacy/pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacotherapy, therapeutics, & pharmaceutical sciences, veterinary pharmacy, curriculum planning, design, and implementation, pedagogy for healthcare professionals, pharmacovigilance & drug safety, antimicrobial stewardship, nutrition support for critical care patients, nosocomial-acquired infections, and other areas.

During his time at MUST, professor Tamukong has been able to lead the curriculum development and implementation of the first ever Masters of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy degree program in Uganda. He has provided mentorship and guidance to students and teaching staff, as well as rendered Clinical Pharmacy Services to patients at the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

Professor Tamukong is a highly motivated Academic, with passionate, considerable and extensive experience in teaching, clinical practice, and research. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and poster presentations, including delivering numerous invited lectures, workshops and professional presentations, both nationally and globally. He has also completed several masters & PhD graduates and many sponsored projects including various bilateral projects. He has a track record of working with various international institutions in universities across the world. He is Board Certified, and licensed to practice in the states of Minnesota and Ohio in the USA. His research interests are centered on outcomes of critically ill patients related to drug therapy, specifically in the areas of pain, agitation and delirium, nosocomial-acquired infections, and antimicrobial stewardship.

Anke Weisheit is an Agricultural Engineer and holds a Master degree in Agricultural Science and Resource Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ARTS) with more than 20 years of experience in tropical agriculture, value chain development, and agribusiness in Eastern and Southern Africa. She is the lead innovator and co-founder and currently, serving as the Chair of Innovation and Business Management of the Pharm-Biotechnology and Traditional Medicine Centre (PHARMBIOTRAC) at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda.

Anke is co-founder and serving on the board of the Friends of PHARMBIOTRAC Foundation (FPF). She has vast experience in innovation incubation, business mentoring, product development and is conducting project and proposal evaluations, strategic planning, feasibility studies, and organization development. Anke is also an External Expert to the European Commission Horizon 2020, a Member of the Governing Council of the Sub-Saharan Open University (SSOU), and serving on the WHO Regional Expert Advisory Committee on Traditional Medicine for COVID-19 Response (REACT). Anke had previously lead teams for evaluations, need assessments and feasibility studies.
