Introducing your baby to solid food from 6 months is a really exciting milestone, but it can also be extremely overwhelming too. As a mother of three children I get it! These are my top tips to put your mind at ease and give you the confidence to get started on your weaning journey.

WHAT IS BABY LED WEANING?

Baby-led weaning involves skipping pureeing and heading straight to safe, soft, and easy-to-manage foods that your baby eats independently. It's called baby-led because babies lead the way. They decide how much to put into their mouths, when they are full, and when they want more.

Top Tips for starting

1. Pick the meal you will start with - Lunch can be a perfect time, especially if mornings are busy with older children.

2. Cut foods into spears and never rounds – This is really important for safety. Spears of softly roasted sweet potato, carrot, butternut squash are all great options and really safe.

3. Food should be soft - you should be able to squash all foods between your finger and thumb. This way, even without teeth, your baby's gums are

full six months old. This ensures that your baby is both digestively and developmentally ready for the world of food!

Your baby should also be able to;

• Sit up in a high chair unsupported by cushions.

• Have really good neck strength.

• Reach out and grab food.

• Have lost the tongue thrust – so not pushing food out.

4. Remember iron is so important. Your baby needs iron to grow and thrive, so serve iron-rich food at every meal.

5. Offer a pre-loaded spoon on the side – This is messy but is a great way to teach your baby how to use a spoon.

6. Your baby's tummy is teeny tiny – your baby's tummy is the size of their fist, so keep the portions small. You can offer more if your baby shows cues of still being hungry.
