Your quarterly newsletter for all things JE Dunn in KC What’s New? As we roll into summer, I have been blown away by two things. First, the number of interns we are welcoming into our building. Please make sure to spend some time with them as they are our future. Second, the amount of work anniversaries that we are celebrating for team members that have been with the company for 20+ years. Please take the time to review the list below and congratulate your team members.
KC 2026 World Cup Host City Supporter We intentionally chose to be a Host City Sponsor for the World Cup in KC. While it is nice to get our name out there for increased brand awareness, our company leadership chose to invest in this opportunity to support our hometown community. It is already proving to be a busy summer.

KC Best Places to Work Sur vey It’s time once again to participate in the Best Places to Work survey, administered by the Kansas City Business Journal. After earning a top spot last year, we have a great opportunity to do it again. Our people are what set us apart, and your feedback is critical in helping us tell that story. By now, you should have received your individual survey link from Quantum Workplace. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete, is completely anonymous, and will remain open through July 10. Please check your junk or spam folder if you don’t see it. Thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and for encouraging your teams to do the same.

KC Office Performance Update
We continue to perform at a very high level as an office. With the exception of our safety performance, we are on pace to hit all of our planned metrics.
Safety
We have had two life‑altering/life‑ending incidents in 2026. These are incredibly difficult to talk about, and we are treating them with the seriousness and urgency they demand. Our project teams have come together to understand what happened and are taking concrete steps to prevent anything like this from ever occurring again. We are strengthening our focus on safety training and moving safety planning further upstream in the project lifecycle. Just like budget and quality, if safety is not built into the initial project execution plan, we will not achieve the outcomes we expect and our people deserve. By making safety our clear number one priority and reinforcing it in every plan, meeting, and decision, I am confident we will get to where we need to be.
Metrics Here’s where we stand mid-year against our 2026 goals: Sales – Goal: $2.585B
We are at approximately $900M in sales through April and have a clear plan to reach our year-end target. We’ve secured numerous significant wins and are intentionally pacing how we book them, ensuring we meet budget expectations and finalize mutually acceptable contract terms before fully recording the sale.
Revenue – Goal: $2.205B
We remain on track to achieve our revenue goal. A few projects have shifted to the right due to changing client priorities and design progress, but based on our current backlog and forecast, we are confident we will finish very close to target.
Self-Perform Revenue – Goal: $282M
Our Kansas City Self-Perform team continues to outperform and is on pace to exceed its revenue target—and do so very profitably. We’ve launched our first multi-story structural steel project in Kansas City, and it is off to an excellent start, reinforcing this as a key growth area. In addition, we are competitively bidding mass excavation and site utilities, winning two large projects in recent months. We will continue to expand these scopes alongside our historical self-perform capabilities.
Gross Profit – Goal: 5.84%
The bar continues to rise, and our teams continue to respond. Operational excellence is off to a strong start, and we are not tracking any major fee erosion issues. Coupled with the volume and performance of our self-perform work, we have a real opportunity to deliver a record-setting year for Kansas City.
Net Income – Goal: 4.74%
KC2026 investments may add some incremental cost this year, but our teams’ performance gives us confidence that we will still exceed our net income goal. We are also trending in the right direction on personal reimbursable costs, and we expect to see that improvement reflected in our bottom line as we move into Q3 and Q4.
Employee Unplanned Attrition – Goal: 6%
Midway through the year, we are on track. We continue to attract top talent — and, more importantly, retain the best people in the industry. Thank you to every team member for being present, engaged, and supportive. What we do is hard, but when we do it together and enjoy the journey, we strengthen our position as the employer of choice.
Safety TRIR – Goal: 0.75
As noted earlier, we are not yet where we need to be on safety. We have a clear plan to improve, but success will require commitment from all of us — on every site, in every meeting, every day. Everyone, everywhere, all the time.

Market Update Data Centers and Healthcare remain the primary engines of our revenue for 2026 and 2027, and they will continue to anchor our plan. At the same time, we are seeing encouraging signs of recovery in the private sector and are actively tracking several large multifamily opportunities that we believe can convert to sales over the next six months. We are also continuing to deliberately invest in Industrial and Manufacturing. Over the past 18 months, our team has focused on understanding how to get in front of these pursuits, building relationships, and refining our positioning. That work is paying off, and we are confident we will be at the table when new opportunities come to market. The following market trends are shaping our work in Kansas City in 2026 and 2027.

Employee Spotlight Ben Kufahl, Project Manager Why construction? Construction has been part of my life since an early age. My dad was a self-employed plumber, which instilled in me a strong work ethic and pride in the trades. I also saw my uncle build a successful career as a project manager, which showed me the industry can provide a stable and rewarding future. I still remember spotting my cousin Kevin’s JE Dunn truck in Wheaton, Kansas — it sparked my curiosity and helped me start seeing construction as a career path.
What has been your favorite project at JE Dunn? My favorite project so far has been the Kansas City Zoo Aquarium. Knowing I’ll be able to bring my daughter there for years to come and show her something I helped build makes it especially meaningful. As my first project out of college, it pushed me early — both financially and through the technical complexity of an aquarium — and played a major role in my professional growth.
If you could spend an afternoon with anyone in histor y, who would it be and why? Neil Armstrong. With renewed interest in space exploration through the Artemis missions, it sparked a lot of conversations on our team about the 1969 moon landing. I’d be fascinated to hear firsthand what that moment felt like — the responsibility, pressure, and the experience of taking that first step on the moon.
What is something about yourself that ver y few know? I grew up in a very small town of about 100 (pets included) and I have five older sisters.
What is your favorite family tradition? My favorite family tradition is our annual Secret Santa exchange. You never quite know what’s going to come out of the box, and that unpredictability is what makes it memorable every year.
What is your bucket-list vacation spot? My bucket-list trip is a four-week journey through Europe focused on visiting World War II historical sites. I’ve always been interested in that period, and experiencing those places firsthand would be incredibly meaningful — especially because my grandfather served as a medic during WWII.

Employee Spotlight Kyle Brandel, Superintendent 1-Trade Why construction? My dad was a superintendent in Kansas City, so I grew up around jobsites. I’d tag along on weekends and, like most kids, was fascinated by the scale of it all — the equipment, the progress, the transformation. One of my favorite memories is riding around behind the scenes at Kauffman Stadium during its remodel. Experiences like that stuck with me and ultimately set me on the path to a career in construction.
What has been your favorite project at JE Dunn? It’s hard to pick just one — every project comes with its own challenges and rewards. Two that stand out from a learning perspective are the Kansas City Zoo Aquarium and the Advent Cancer Center. Both were early in my career, so I was absorbing a lot very quickly, and I was fortunate to be surrounded by strong teams who helped accelerate that learning. The most rewarding and most challenging is my current project at Lake City. We’ve worked through a number of obstacles, and it’s impressive to step back and see how much we’ve accomplished in just over a year despite those challenges.
What is something about yourself that ver y few know? I grow a better garden than Ryan Bush (a fellow teammate).
What is your favorite family tradition? Growing up, my family was big into baseball, and we turned that into a long-term tradition of visiting every MLB stadium. We’d catch a game, then spend the rest of the trip exploring the city — checking out historical sites, local landmarks, and nearby national parks. So far, we’ve visited 28 of the 30 parks, with plans to hit Arizona this month and Houston next year.
What advice do you have for early-career employees at JE Dunn? Be intentional about learning every day. Pay attention to what’s happening around you and ask yourself why things are done in a certain way or in a particular sequence. As you start answering those questions, you’ll build a deeper understanding of the work and how everything fits together.
