2024 MODERNISM WEEK PROJECT COLORS

EVERYTHING NEW IS NEW AGAIN IMPACTFUL. CASUAL. COMPLEX. SIMPLE. A BREAKTHROUGH ARCHITECTURAL AND DESIGN STYLE SINCE ITS INCEPTION, MIDCENTURY MODERN BALANCES THE TENSION BETWEEN SEEMINGLY CONTRADICTING ELEMENTS, MUCH IN THE SAME WAY THE DESERT PIVOTS BETWEEN DRAMATIC CONTRASTS OF LIGHT AND DARK, HEAT AND COLD, EMPTINESS AND LIFE. AS A MODERNISM WEEK SPONSOR, DUNN-EDWARDS IS PROUD TO HAVE PLAYED A ROLE IN BRINGING SOME OF PALM SPRINGS’ MOST LEGENDARY MIDCENTURY MODERN HOMES BACK TO LIFE.

THE SHAG HOUSE

It’ll feel like you’re entering a Shag painting. This home has been remodeled and customized by the artist Shag (Josh Agle) for its new homeowner. Originally imagined by architects Palmer & Krisel for the Alexander Construction Company in 1958, Shag has preserved much of the original layout including the familiar 3-bedroom, 2-bath floor plan, as well as the tongue and groove ceilings. This one-of-a-kind Shag House will set the perfect party backdrop in Palm Springs.

WEXLER ‘54

Embark on a tour of Wexler ‘54, a Deepwell gem showcasing meticulous architectural preservation. Crafted by Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison in 1954, this post & beam masterpiece, built by Robert Higgins, earned historic designation in 2022. Collaborating with Susan Secoy Jensen AIA, the current owners restored the 4-bed, 4.5-bath residence, preserving midcentury elegance. H3K Home + Design revitalized its essence, blending modern living with the iconic flat roof, glass walls, and the charm of historic slump stone walls. The result is a seamless fusion of midcentury style and contemporary luxury, epitomizing the desert lifestyle.

HOUSE OF TOMORROW

Explore the revamped Alexander Estate, once Elvis’s Honeymoon Hideaway. Renovated by Michelle Boudreau Design, this 1960 gem in Vista Las Palmas boasts four interconnected circular pods, restored terrazzo floors, windows, ceiling fireplaces, and a unique circular sofa. Originally crafted by architect William Krisel for the Alexander Construction Company, the house radiates history. Its iconic circular design reflects Krisel’s belief that “circles have no edge, you can approach them from anywhere.” The House of Tomorrow preserves its historic charm while embracing contemporary vision. The restoration brings to life the vivid narrative of the home, where the Presleys celebrated their love in 1967. Witness the seamless blend of midcentury architecture and modern aesthetics in this extraordinary residence, a testament to the enduring allure of the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway. 8
