01 MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK DISCOVERY CENTER Mount Rainier National Park located in Washington is the United States fifth National Park. Located on the park is Mount Rainier, an active volcano which defines the land, wildlife, and history around it. The Mount Rainier National Park Discovery Center engages visitors through experience. Visitors discover the space just as they would discover Mount Rainier National Park.

PROJECT 03: GROUNDED CAFE

SITE ANALYSIS Mount Rainier National Park features five developed areas for hiking or camping and four main entrances. Carbon River, Sunrise, and Longmire, Ohanapecosh, and Paradise are each of the five areas. The discovery center is placed at the Paradise location for it’s gorgeous views, yearround availability and direct views towards Mount Rainier.

THREE DIMENSIONAL PARTI DEVELOPMENT

CONCEPT The new visitor center at Mount Rainier National Park is based on the idea of discovery. Through geology, nature, and history, the park is defined by the mountain. Visitors will discover the mountain through immersive experiences and leave feeling educated, empowered, and more engaged with the park.

Colored windows of blue, pink, and green are inspired by the sky, flowers, and nature of the park. The windows bring colored light into the space sparking curiosity for the visitors as they discover the space.

CIRCULATION OF DISCOVERY ZONES The Discovery Center features interactive zones of discovery for users to experience as they progressively learn more about the park until the mountain is finally revealed in the last zone.

02 WILLOW LAKE STUDENT BARN Willow Lake Student Farm is a farm associated with Kansas State University that is focused on the education and implementation of sustainability and farming. The farm works as a living laboratory for education and production of produce which is provided for Kansas State University and the local community. The Student Barn houses the functions necessary to reach the farm’s goals while also providing outreach to Kansas State students and community members.

SITE PLAN Willow Lake Student Barn is inspired by the growing habits provided by the site itself. Farming produce grows more successfully side by side just as people work better with other people. Produce from the site also benefits from the work of people and people benefit from the produce.

CONCEPT The Willow Lake Student Barn is created through mutuality.

Mutuality facilitates the mutually beneficial relationship between people and the farm. The Barn creates opportunities for collaboration, inspires positive interactions, and prioritizes function.

Sound barriers as acoustical wall and ceiling panels, and suspended planes, are mutually beneficial for visual appeal and sound dampening.

Willow Lake Student Barn features a centralized space with opportunities for extensions of different functions. The space is mutually beneficial for students, employees, and visitors.

03 GROUNDED CAFE Grounded Cafe is located in the Cityscape area of downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Job opportunities and warm weather alike have caused the population of the area to rise, bringing people of all different backgrounds together. The Cityscape area also has different multi sensory events that aim to bring the community together.

The cafe serves as a new experience for Phoenix as an outreach for the Alzheimer’s Society from United Kingdom. The Cafe is a memory cafe that inspired others to cherish their own memories.

MEMORY MOOD BOARD Grounded was inspired my memory of home. My freshman year of college I went home for Thanksgiving break feeling worn out. My visit to home filled my cup back up with revisiting old memories and engaging in conversation with family. My home is what grounded me before my return to school.

CONCEPT Grounded Cafe is a home away from home providing a safe space for visitors to ground themselves and reset. In a city with many different cultural backgrounds, Grounded invites all people to find a home in the new or familiar city by utilizing features of Arizona homes and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.

In elevation, framed views to the interior are present through the voids in the mass. In section, these voids are filled in the same way that home fills the heart.

Grounded Cafe features a mug painting room. Mugs are related to a feeling of “home”. As visitors paint their own mugs they have the opportunity to join a “Mug Club” for greater connection to the cafe.
