the gaffer Good afternoon and welcome back to Tannadice! When I look back at our victory over Partick Thistle last time out, the first half was an extremely competitive encounter - so I am expecting something similar from a side on a great run of form. People forget we were only actually a goal up at half-time despite going on to win the game comfortably. We have to be prepared for teams to come here and make it difficult for us to play, so I’d like to see us raise the tempo and intensity in possession. A lot has been made of the recent lack of goals but we actually created more opportunities and final third entries at Hampden last weekend compared to our 5-0 win over Partick Thistle. There’s no getting away from our disappointment, especially when we compare our recent form to the way we started the season. However, I have no doubt that with the squad we have we can get back on track.
AS WITH ANY GAME HERE AT TANNADICE, THE ONUS IS ON US TO TAKE THE GAME TO THE OPPOSITION. The fans have been brilliant all season and we’re looking to end the year on a positive note and go into 2024 with confidence. I hope you all enjoy the game! - JIM GOODWIN

On Christmas Eve, Tannadice played host to people at risk of isolation and loneliness over the festive period. As part of the SPFL Trust’s Festive Friends Programme, Dundee United and Dundee United Community Trust provided a festive lunch for members of our local community. Present at the event was First Minister Humza Yousaf, SPFL Trust Chief Executive Nicky Reid, Dundee United FC Chief Operating Officer Joe Rice and Dundee United Community Trust Chief Executive Jamie Kirk. The First Minister, who offered his support at our lunch, commented, “It is a testament to the fact that Dundee United is rooted to its community here in Dundee and it’s evident how appreciative the local community are.” You can watch the full video below!

Since United’s 5-0 rout of Thistle at Firhill back in October, The Jags have lost only once in their nine subsequent matches. That run of form has seen our guests comfortably establish themselves as ‘best of the rest’ behind the runaway top two. It’s now eight years (albeit only five matches) since Thistle last won a league match at Tannadice, on that occasion current Manager Kris Dolan scored the only goal of the match amid a United nine-match winless run in the Premiership. Going back even further, Thistle have visited Tannadice 63 times in total, leaving victorious on only ten occasions.
summer SIGNINGS Scott Robinson is a product of Hearts’ youth academy and became the youngest player in SPL history when he made his Jambo’s debut at the age of 16. Now 31, the striker has also featured for Kilmarnock, Dunfermline, East Fife and Livingston. Midfielder Blair Alston scored the goal that won the Championship title in 2021/22 for former club Kilmarnock. A promising youth at Falkirk, he featured in well over 200 matches for the club over two spells, as well as representing St Johnstone and Hamilton. Mainly limited to
substitute appearances earlier this season, he has started the previous five matches and has scored three times in his last six appearances. Captured from Hartlepool United on a one-year deal, former Birmingham youth Wes McDonald has struggled to break into the side. Capable of playing anywhere along the forward line or as an attacking midfielder, the 26-year-old has featured only once since his substitute appearance when we visited Firhill in October. With the summer playing budget tight, Thistle dipped heavily into the loan market, bringing in no fewer than five players via that route. Having struggled to establish himself at both Tannadice and Tynecastle, 20-year-old Lewis Neilson has already started more games whilst on loan at Thistle than he did at either United or his parent club Hearts. The 6’3” centre half has been capped at U16, U17 and U21 levels. Full-back Kieran Ngwenya was signed on loan for the season from Aberdeen but the 21-yearold Malawian international hasn’t featured since sustaining an injury against Queens Park back in October. Nathan McGinley was brought from Motherwell in late September on a four-month loan to gain match fitness after missing the entire 22/23 campaign due to injury. Unfortunately, the left-sided defender has again been on the treatment table and has yet to feature. Midfielder Kerr McInroy has become a pivotal part in the side and has already notched four times whilst on loan from Kilmarnock. The former youth international has also previously featured for Celtic, Dunfermline, Airdrieonians and Ayr United.
Twenty-two-year-old midfielder Ben Williamson is currently undertaking his fifth loan spell away from Rangers. Under contract at Ibrox until the summer, the ball-winning U21 international made his Thistle debut at Tannadice earlier this season. Tomi Adeloye has a successful 2021/22 campaign at Ayr United, scoring fourteen times in thirty-eight matches. The 27-year-old striker has spent the majority of his career in the English non-leagues after initially performing at youth level for both Charlton and Millwall. Limited to just one Championship start for Thistle, the pacy and powerful Londoner is currently on loan from League Two side Swindon Town.

As a player, Doolan spent most of his career at Firhill and is most definitely a club legend. Signed from Auchinleck Talbot in 2009, the 37-year-old is currently the club’s fourth top goalscorer of all time, a Hall of Fame inductee and was a member of the 2012/13 First Division title-winning squad. Appointed youth coach in January, he was appointed first team interim manager within a matter of weeks (following the sacking of Ian McCall) and led Thistle on an amazing run of just one defeat in eighteen games. However, their incredible late capitulation in the play-off final at Ross County denied him a promotion to the top flight in his first season as a manager.
After 43 matches in charge, the Irvine-born gaffer has an impressive win rate of 51%, suffering only eight defeats in that time. Despite turning 36 last month, the 6’4” striker remains Thistle’s main goalscoring threat. With 12 goals to his name in all competitions already this term, the Glaswegian currently leads the race for the Championship top scorer award. After beginning his career in 2006 with Greenock Morton, his move to Raith Rovers five years later saw his career really take off. Thirty-eight goals in two seasons in Kirkcaldy saw topflight clubs show an interest and United signed him to replace outgoing club legend Jon Daly. However, with only seven goals from thirty-seven matches and unable to dislodge Nadir Çiftçi, he spent the second year of his contract on loan at St Johnstone. Spells at Ross County, Hibernian and Cheltenham followed before he joined Thistle in 2020. Words by Ryan Haldane

The Belgian defender spent most of his playing career in his native Belgium but enjoyed two spells in Scotland, first at Firhill and then at Tannadice.
He returned to his former club, Lierse, however, when it went bankrupt at the end of the 2017-18 season, Frédéric returned to Scotland once more to sign a two-year deal with United in June 2018.
As a child Frédéric played for Olympia Wespelaar before starting his career at Belgian outfit Lierse SK, joining at the age of five. He progressed through the youth ranks and into the first team, making his debut in January 2007. Representing Belgium at various youth levels, he was a member of the Lierse team that won promotion and the Second Division title in 2010, and went on to make over 100 appearances, captaining the side more than 75 times.
An ever-present in defence under Csaba Laszlo, he continued to feature regularly under new manager Robbie Neilson, but after the arrival of Mark Reynolds and Mark Connolly in the January transfer window, he was used more as cover for the new defensive duo. After being involved in the pre-season matches against East Fife, Brechin City and Dumbarton, Frédéric failed to break back into the first team at the start of the 2019-20 season and was released at the end of the summer transfer window.
At the age of 25, he opted to move abroad, signing a short-term deal with Partick Thistle in October 2014 when Alan Archibald was Thistle’s manager. He made his debut on 25th October 2014, in a 0-0 draw at home to St Johnstone in the Premiership.
All 25 appearances for the Club came during his first season, the last of which was in a 1-1 draw at Falkirk on February 2019. He scored twice in tangerine – both in 1-1 draws with Alloa at home in the League Cup and away to Morton in the Championship in December 2019. On his return to Belgium and signed for Lierse for a third time, after the club had merged with berOosterzonen to regain their place in the Belgian League system.
His contract with the Glasgow side was soon extended, and he became a regular during his two years at Firhill. His first goal for The Jags was on 24th January 2015, in a 2-2 draw away to Kilmarnock in the Premiership and the last of his four goals was at Tannadice on 10th May, 2016, in a 3-3 draw with United in the Premiership. His final game for the Jags was the following Saturday in a 2-2 draw at home to Hamilton Academical, taking his Thistle tally of appearances to 48.
Latterly, he played for Beerschot VA, but retired from playing earlier this season.

Furthermore, warm food parcels from the staff and players’ Christmas Lunch, held at Tannadice earlier that afternoon, were also gifted to be consumed by attendees at Thursday’s Cosy Space meeting within the venue.
“The facility is crucial for a great number of people, especially at this time of year and, on behalf of the club, I’d like to thank Sam, Marty and all of the volunteers for their vital efforts to assist people in the local community. “I’d also like to highlight the generosity of our first-team squad, who contributed the supplies themselves”

Close to four decades have passed since the last Football Programme Fair took place on Tayside. And with the recent revival of the Fair circuit in and around Scotland proving highly successful, organiser Jim Thomson is putting Dundee back on the map for the first time since the mid-eighties. The Fair, sponsored by Curtis Sports (publishers of ‘Shed Talk’ as well as many other Scottish and English clubs) takes place on Sunday 7th January 2024 at the Craigie Bowling Club, 55 Dalkeith Road, Dundee, DD4 7JJ from 11am – 2pm. Jim Thomson has been encouraged by the initial response to the event: “I am pleased to say that interest has been healthy, and I would expect this will only grow as I ramp up the advertising as we get nearer the day,” he said. “Attending are vendors from all over the UK, so it promises to be a very successful event with a huge range of programmes available with clearly an obvious bias to some more local clubs!” Pictured here are some of the iconic Dundee United issues that are sure to be available as will a huge range of European and Friendlies involving United. THE EARLY DAYS
With the focus on the centenary of the name change from Dundee Hibernian to Dundee United, throughout the season we’ll be looking back at meetings between visiting clubs and the Hibs. In that respect, Partick Thistle are unique – because they are the only one of our Championship rivals this season that Dundee Hibernian never met at first-team level. There were, though, two meetings between the Hibs and Thistle’s A team during the 1922-23 season, the one prior to our name change to United. Partick Thistle were formed in 1876 in Partick, which at that time was not part of Glasgow (and remained that way until 1912). They participated in the Scottish Cup in their first season and as football developed they were prominent in that as well as local cup competitions. But they were not one of the eleven clubs that founded the Scottish League in 1890, although they were among the first new clubs admitted when Division Two was introduced three years later. After winning that division in season 1896-97 Thistle were elected to Division One, though they performed poorly and did not win re-election in 1899. Despite winning Division Two again the following season they were not re-elected to Division One until 1902. This time, they remained at the top level for 68 years. The year 1909 of course saw the formation of the club that became Dundee United, but it was also a landmark year for Thistle, because that was when they took up residence at Firhill Park. That meant their home was no longer in Partick, as Firhill lies a mile to the north in the Maryhill district. When Dundee Hibs finished second bottom of Division Two in season 1921-22 they did not have the option of seeking re-election in order to remain in the Scottish League. For years, clubs
in that division had been demanding that the top two should be automatically promoted to Division One and it was only after breaking away to form the Central League (of which Dundee Hibs were a part) that they were able to negotiate with the Division One clubs that there would be two up and two down each season. But initially, because Division One had 22 clubs and the new Division Two 20, at the end of the season they would be evened up at 20 each by relegating the bottom three clubs in Division One, promoting only the champions of Division Two, while the bottom two clubs in that division would lose their Scottish League places. Thus Dundee Hibs found themselves out in the cold and it was only due to Celtic deciding to withdraw their reserve team from the Scottish Alliance and nominating the Hibs to replace them that Pat Reilly’s team had a national league in which to play. Thirteen of the Division One clubs had their reserve sides in the Scottish Alliance in season 1922-23, among them Partick Thistle. Indeed, the Jags were Dundee Hibernian’s opponents on the opening day of the campaign, the sides fighting out a 2-2 draw at Firhill Park on 19 August. It’s not known who the scorers for Thistle were, but inside right Willie Stewart and centre-forward W Thomson were on the mark for the men in green. Thomson was a temporary signing, being a member of the armed forces stationed on Tayside and his first name was not given in the local newspapers. Indeed, not much was mentioned about the Hibs during that season, with several of their matches not even reported. When they were, the information provided was brief and sometimes failed to mention the goal scorers, as can be seen from the report of that match at Firhill.

For Dundee Hibs it was a wretched season, during which the club had three managers (sound familiar?!). Pat Reilly was five years into his second spell in charge, but with the Hibs having won just three of their first 14 Scottish Alliance matches he decided to stand down in December. In total, the man who had been the driving force behind the foundation of the club in 1909 was manager for 388 competitive games, a figure only exceeded in the history of Dundee Hibernian/United by Jerry Kerr and Jim McLean.

His successor was Peter O’Rourke, a Scot who had a good pedigree as a player (with Celtic, Burnley and Bradford City) and an even better one as a manager – in 1911 he had led Bradford City to fifth place in Division One and an FA Cup win, neither of which have ever been repeated by that club.
However, the club board campaigned for a return to the Scottish League and their efforts were successful when, together with Arbroath, Dundee Hibernian were elected to Division Two for season 1923-24. The only way was up!
However, O’Rourke quickly recognised that without the necessary financial support from the Hibs board to turn around the club’s fortunes, the task was beyond him. He was in charge for less than four months, although one of the matches during his tenure was a 1-1 draw with Partick Thistle A at Tannadice in the Alliance on 3 February 1923, when the Hibs scorer was John Clark, a centre-forward on a
When O’Rourke resigned in March he was replaced by one of his signings, Willie McAndrew, who became player/manager. Despite his experience of playing at the top level for 15 years with Queen’s Park, Clyde and Third Lanark (and winning three Scottish League caps), McAndrew had no more success in reviving the club’s fortunes. The Hibs ended the season third bottom of the Scottish Alliance and their future was in real doubt.

29 DECEMBER 1917 - DUNDEE HIBS 5-1 EAST FIFE | EASTERN LEAGUE Pat Reilly’s team came out on top in this basement battle to leapfrog the defeated visitors who fell to the bottom of the league. From the scoreline, it appears an emphatic enough victory, but according to the Scotsman reporter, the four-goal margin was a bit harsh on the Fifers.
1934 - DUNDEE UTD 3-3 ALLOA ATHLETIC | LEAGUE (DIVISION TWO) United found the opposition more formidable than anticipated, but even then, they were a tad unfortunate not to bank the points, having an Alec King counter chalked off. Earlier, Bobby Gardiner gave United the lead with King added a second before the break. And King struck again in the second half, only for Wallace and Williamson to reduce the leeway to a single goal and Richardson levelled from a penalty, five minutes from time.
1973 - DUNDEE UTD 6-0 DUMBARTON | LEAGUE (DIVISION ONE) Another hammering meted out on this day with Dumbarton the victims and Andy Gray was the destroyer-in-chief, scoring four times. He started the tout on 17 minutes with Tommy Traynor the other first-half scorer. Frank Kopel added a third three minutes after the restart before Gray blasted in three in 20 minutes. It would have been five had he not missed a penalty four minutes from the end.
1951 - DUNDEE UTD 5-0 QUEEN’S PARK | LEAGUE (B DIVISION) United romped to victory over the Hampden amateurs, though, Pinkerton making his Spiders’ debut in goal was culpable for giftwrapped four of the goals. Indeed, he virtually threw the first one in, though Peter McKay was credited with the counter. A Frank Quinn double – one a back-heeler saw United go in three up at the break with George Mitchell and a Ross own goal took the tally to five with just under an hour played.
2010 - HIBERNIAN 2-2 DUNDEE UTD | LEAGUE (SPL) On the face of it, a decent point given injuries, suspensions and lack of match practice - but with United having created the platform for a comfortable win - this felt like two points dropped. In their first outing in almost six weeks, United made a dream start with David Goodwillie coolly slotting home after being put through by Johnny Russell after just two minutes. The best move of the match saw United deservedly extend their lead. Paul Dixon swept past Hart on the left and crossed for Goodwillie to cutely flick into the net despite being sandwiched between keeper and defender. As half-time approached, only a last-ditch Bamba tackle stopped Douglas adding a killer third. Crucially, and seconds from the interval, Bamba pulled one back with a header after Pernis had done well to parry Riordon’s free-kick. With half an hour remaining, Danny Swanson replaced Russell, but was sent off after picking up a second booking 16 minutes later, leaving his colleagues mounting a desperate rearguard action. And with two minutes left, Paul Hanlon prodded home an equaliser from close range.
