GOODWIN Good evening everyone, and welcome back to Tannadice!

Coming into games like this, the focus tends to be on Celtic, especially with the kind of week that they’ve had. But it’s still important to remember how good a side they are when they’re on their game.

So we’ve got to be wary of that, but at the same time we have to believe that, if we can go and put on a similar type of game plan and performance to what St Mirren did at the weekend, then there’s no reason why we can’t get the same outcome.

At the moment, lately, the results haven’t been good enough and we don’t shy away from that.

I’m honest enough and open enough to admit when we get things wrong, but I don’t think the team has played particularly badly over the course of the campaign up to now. We’ve

just had too many draws and it’s just about finding a way to turn those draws into victories.

Our supporters will be there in great numbers again tomorrow night, driving the team on - they want to see us being attacking-minded and being aggressive with Celtic and not being passive.

We carry a real attacking threat. I would imagine tomorrow night, we’ll have good opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net but we also need to respect the opposition and concentrate for 90 plus minutes to ensure we get that result.

That’s the instruction from me to the players - to go out there and fight for the jersey and leave nothing in the tank.

GRAHAM Welcome back to Tannadice, United fans!

We’re really happy with the clean sheet at the weekend. That was one of our main goals, to go into that game and make sure that we shut up shop.

We’ve not done enough of that at this season, so we’re very glad to get back to getting a clean sheet. You need that ahead of a game against Celtic at home, who will be hurting after what happened to them at the weekend.

Celtic are always a top side, no matter what form you get them in - I’m not sure there’s ever a good time to get them. They’ve got really high-quality players, so we need to be switched on in that aspect.

They’re not going to be on this run of form forever, so we can try and make sure that it doesn’t change

for them tomorrow night.

There’s pressure in any game that you go into, but we’ll probably still go into the game as underdogs.

We’ve been better at that this season against the bigger teams, so we’ll use that to our advantage as well and try and go and get the three points.

We’ll play on the front foot, especially at Tannadice.

We’ve got our home support as well, so we’ll get as much use out of them as we can, and they’ll drive us forward to try win the game.

I’ve loved being back out there and playing the three games so far. I’m looking to get as many more as possible under my belt before the end of the year.

CELTIC

Having won thirteen of the previous fourteen Premiership titles, Celtic find themselves in the unusual position of sitting second as we approach the busy festive fixture schedule.

After being dumped out of the Champions League qualifying stages by Kazakhstan minnows Kairat Almaty, an inconsistent start to their Premiership campaign followed and, in the aftermath of a 3-1 loss to Hearts in October, manager Brendan Rodgers resigned. Celtic turned to the safe hands of former boss Martin O’Neill as interim manager whilst they sought a permanent appointment, and the Ulsterman not only won five straight league matches but also guided the club to Hampden by defeating Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

Wilfried Nancy’s appointment unfortunately ended that run of success with back to back defeats at the hands of Hearts and AS Roma. However, defeat to St Mirren in Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final has now ensured Celtic arrive here at a major crossroads in their season.

The good news for our visitors, though, is that this is a fixture Celtic have a ridiculously good record in. Unbeaten in the last 23 encounters over the past 11 years, winning eighteen of them, they have scored 63 times to United’s seven.

Upon appointing the 48-year-old Frenchman earlier this month, Celtic’s Chief Executive, Michael Nicholson stated Nancy was the club’s ‘number one candidate’.

Formerly in charge at CF Montreal and Columbus Crew, this is Nancy’s first managerial role in Europe, although he did have a short professional playing career as a defender at Toulon in the mid to late 1990s.

Favouring a 3-4-3 system, it appears he faces a challenge in implementing the formation at Celtic, with recent results meaning he has become the only Celtic manager to lose his first three matches in charge.

Uruguayan defender signed on a season-long loan from Boca Juniors, but the 27-year-old is currently out injured after featuring prominently earlier in the campaign.

WATCH JOHNNY KENNY

Despite the young Irishman scoring four goals in his five matches at club level, the new manager has unceremoniously dropped the 22-year-old from the starting lineup for the past three matches. The fact Celtic have lost all three only emphasises what Kenny brings to the side.

Under contract until 2029, the young striker has had to be patient for his chance since being sent out on loan from Parkhead, enduring three separate spells away at a lower level.

However, after forcing his way into the side under Martin O’Neill, he now sits just one goal behind Daizen Maeda and Nygren as the club’s Premiership top scorer this term, despite making just four starts.

ALEX MATHIE Alex, a product of Gairdoch BC, began his career as a youth player at Celtic, making a dozen appearances during his four years as a professional at Celtic Park.

Sturrock brought Alex to Tannadice in a £500,000 move and he made his debut against Kilmarnock in October 1998. His first goal came a week later, scoring the winner against Hearts at Tynecastle, but by the end of that season he had only found the net once more in nearly 30 appearances.

Linked with moves to Cardiff City and Manchester City, he went out on loan to Preston North End in September 1999. On returning to Tannadice in December, he fought his way back into the first team and scored a late double for another victory at Tynecastle.

After five games at the start of the 2000-01 season, taking his tally to 50 appearances and six goals, he was released in September and joined York City. After three years there, he moved to non-league Pickering Town.

He joined Greenock Morton in August 1991 for a fee of £100,000, becoming the club’s top scorer for two seasons, aggregating 45 goals from 88 appearances.

After a short spell on loan with Port Vale, that impressive form for the Cappielow outfit persuaded manager Kevin Keegan to take the striker to Newcastle United in July 1993 in a deal worth £250,000.

He then managed Spennymoor United, West Auckland and Pickering Town. He also had a spell working for local BBC Radio Suffolk, commentating on his former side Ipswich. He later worked for Royal Mail as a delivery office manager in the York and Leeds area.

However, his two year stint at St James’ Park was mainly limited to substitute appearances and he moved to Ipswich Town in February 1995, scoring a hat-trick on his debut. He helped them reach the play-offs for a place in the Premiership at the end of the 1997-98 season.

Occupying fifth spot in the Premiership table as they enter the festive period, Hibernian face a string of fixtures against most of their nearest rivals in the race for the coveted European slots. After today’s visit to Tannadice, the Hibees face Hearts, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Motherwell before a trip to Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup. It is not unreasonable to surmise that these six fixtures will go a long way in deciding how the season will eventually pan out for the men from Easter Road.

Before Monday night’s trip to Ibrox, Hibs had lost three and won three of their previous seven matches as inconsistency

continued to blight their push to emulate last season’s third place finish.

The last dozen encounters between the sides have produced an average of 3.5 goals per game, with September’s 3-3 draw in the capital arguably the Premiership’s match of the season.

After retiring from playing in 2021, the former full back went straight into the Hibernian coaching set up. Three years and four caretaker manager stints later, Gray was appointed as the top man on a permanent basis.

Following an arduous start to his career in the dugout, Hibs were sitting bottom of the table in November 2024. The former Hearts youth player abandoned his original philosophy and reverted to a 3-4-1-2 system, and the change paid instant dividends.

Winning Manager of the Month in December, February and March, Gray masterminded an incredible run of results that culminated in a third place finish and European qualification.

Having lifted the Scottish Cup and Championship titles as a player, the Edinburgh born 37 year old holds a burning desire to also bring silverware back to Easter Road as a manager.

Veteran defender signed a two year deal and brings a wealth of experience to the back line. A youth player with Queen of the South, Crewe, Rangers and Blackburn Rovers, he made his senior debut in the English Premier League in 2010.

Going on to represent Newcastle United, Norwich City and Birmingham, the right footed centre half lifted the Championship title on three occasions.

Capped seventeen times, the former Bordeaux frontman scored eight times in just fifteen matches last season and, despite being a regular substitute, has already notched three goals for Hibernian.

DANIEL BARLASER joins on

Capped at youth level by both Turkey and England, the 6’1” midfielder was born in Gateshead and was handed his senior debut at Newcastle United by Rafa Benitez. The 28 year old possesses a wide range of passing as well as the ability to find the net from long range.

WATCH JAMIE MCGRATH

Summer signing Jamie McGrath began his career in his native Ireland with St Patrick’s Athletic and Dundalk before signing for St Mirren. A talisman for Saints, his twenty goals from midfield in two years for The Buddies tempted Wigan into swooping for the ROI internationalist.

Seven months later, however, and after just four appearances for The Latics, he was plying his trade at Tannadice on a season long loan. Marking his debut with an assist against AZ Alkmaar, he featured 37 times and hit the net on nine occasions, six of which were from the penalty spot. Ultimately, United were relegated and McGrath jumped at the chance to move to Aberdeen, where he spent two seasons before penning a four year deal at Easter Road.

This season has seen the 29 year old register six goals, including the disputed penalty equaliser in the 3-3 draw in the capital back in September.

JAMES CHARLES MCQUILKEN The left back qualifies for both of this week’s opponents, not to mention Aberdeen, Falkirk, Greenock Morton, Gretna, Queen of the South and St Johnstone.

His career began at Celtic, where he had limited first team experience, making five top team appearances in almost three years at Parkhead. He joined United for a reported fee of £150,000 in November 1995 and made his debut as a substitute in the final of the League Challenge Cup at McDiarmid Park the next day, collecting a runners-up medal.

He played his part in taking United out of the First Division at the end of the 1995-96 season, appearing in both play-off legs against Partick Thistle at the end of the campaign after being out of the team since March.

In the Premier Division campaign that followed, the arrival of Erik Pedersen signalled an end to his first team position and, after 17 starts and seven substitute appearances, he joined Hibernian in January 1997 for £100,000, where his stint was even shorter.

He spent just six months at Easter Road, playing 11 matches before joining Falkirk, where he had five successful years making over 150 appearances, including helping them win the First Division title in 2003.

Short spells at Aberdeen and St Johnstone ensued before joining Gretna on loan in 2004, signing a contract there a year later. He helped the Borders club win the Third and Second Division titles in consecutive seasons and collected a runners-up medal after defeat to Hearts in the 2006 Scottish Cup final.

He signed for Queen of the South in January 2007 and returned to the national stadium in a second Scottish Cup final in 2008, losing to Rangers.

In 2010, he retired at the age of 35 to start a new career with the police, but returned with Cambuslang Rangers in the juniors later that year.

The issue above was what was ranked as the first landmark result for the club, eliminating the mighty Celtic.

In a pulsating affair, none of the 25,000 all-ticket crowd, not to mention the 1,000 or so who broke in, will ever forget the 90 minutes which delivered a compelling spectacle.

In addition to Peter McKay scoring twice, with Jimmy Dickson and George Cruickshank also finding the net, Willie MacFadyen’s men had three goals chalked off.

Though the normal programme was produced, bowing to the importance of the tie, Celtic pen pictures were included in the four pages of editorial, although a full page of Donald Coleman of Aberdeen seemed incongruous.

Given how iconic the result was, this is one of the must-haves for any United collector.

The first post-war issue involving United at Celtic Park was the Hoops’ standard eight page programme which, with the odd exception, featured a player on the front cover.

So much so, this design lasted from the first in 1947 until season 1969-70, when a large Celtic badge replaced the usual head shot.

Incidentally, United’s first visit to Celtic Park since August 1931 ended in a 1-1 draw. Jim Irvine gave United an early lead after just three minutes, with John Hughes, featured on the front cover above, equalising early in the second half.

Because Celtic’s first visit to Tannadice since the famous 1949 Scottish Cup triumph was delayed until a local spring holiday and played on a Monday afternoon, no programme was issued.

The match ended in a tame 1–1 draw, with Gibby Ormond’s opener cancelled out late by John Hughes.

The next programme for a Celtic fixture, 13 years on from that iconic 4–3 cup win, captured a far more dramatic occasion as the Hoops edged a nine-goal thriller. Early on, it looked one-sided, with United three down inside the first half as Mike Jackson struck twice and Hughes added another. Although Jim Irvine pulled one back, Hughes made it 4–1 at the break.

Paddy Crerand’s goal two minutes after the restart made it five and seemed to settle matters, but United launched an extraordinary comeback. Irvine scored twice more in quick succession to complete a remarkable hat-trick, before Wattie Carlyle made it 5–4 with nine minutes left.

In the dying seconds, Carlyle was sent sprawling by Billy McNeill, but referee Fyfe waved away penalty appeals, allowing Celtic to scrape through after looking certain to coast home.

United’s scorers against Celtic: Wattie Carlyle and Jim Irvine United programmes of season 1961-62 were part of a numbering series. The one here was Vol 2 Number 11 and consisted of editorial entitled From the Manager’s Office, which was signed by Jerry Kerr but was actually written by People’s Journal journalist Bob Miller in this instance.

This task later fell upon his successors and endured until season 1968-69, when there was a complete revamp of the programme. Apart from the teams, half-time scoreboard and Next Match, these were the only editorial items, with adverts taking up the rest of the space.

Until season 2016-17, this 1932 meeting was the only league clash with Hibs which did not take place in the top flight of the Scottish game.

Ironically, the pair had faced up to each other the previous season, but that was in the Scottish Cup, whilst United were in the First Division and Hibs were in the second tier.

United progressed to the next round courtesy of a 3-2 success at Easter Road, but Hibs were to gain revenge a few months later, winning 2-0 on the opening day of the following season in a Second Division clash after United’s relegation at the end of the previous campaign.

The programme consisted of 12 pages, of which two and a half

comprised editorial, split between articles entitled Editor’s Notes and From the Pavilion.

Otherwise, the fixture lists, league tables, team line-ups and the all-important halftime scoreboard were interspersed between the six pages of adverts.

Given that level of advertising, it will come as no surprise that this issue, like so many other programmes that existed prewar, was published by an advertising agency, in this case the Edinburgh-based Scottish Advertising Company.

Costing one penny, it would take a barrowload of pennies to acquire one of any pre-war Scottish issues nowadays because of their scarcity.

It was 1958 before United’s first team would play at Easter Road for which a programme was issued. That came after United had held Hibs to a goalless draw at Tannadice and the format for almost the entire fifties was the standard eight-page edition being produced, with the only major change being the new club badge displayed on the front cover in 1956, replacing the sketched footballer.

The Easter Road issue in 1958 was fundamentally the same from 1956 until the early seventies, consisting of eight pages and, in the case of the one highlighted here, there was an interesting review of the first ever meeting with Dundee Hibs in 1909.

As mentioned above, the Scottish Cup tie was the first time an in-house Hibs programme was available. However, there were no fewer than five four-page issues printed for the United A team’s visits to Easter Road for C Division fixtures from 1949 up until April 1952, at which point the club decided to cease running a reserve side.

The full list of dates for these, after the first one which is illustrated, are 16 September 1950, 2 May 1951, 6 October 1951 and 14 April 1952. The format of these was very similar in size to the United issues of the sixties, but contained a variety of interesting and illustrated articles.

Darren Jackson, on debut following his £200,000 transfer from Newcastle United, was injured in a tackle with Derek Whyte and forced off. Shortly afterwards, Dave Bowman then came off worst in a challenge by Mark McGhee and was forced to retire after 17 minutes.

Nevertheless, United broke the deadlock after 67 minutes. Lex Baillie brought Kevin Gallacher down and Mixu Paatelainen neatly converted the penalty. Any lingering doubts about a United victory were removed five minutes from time. Kevin Gallacher was tripped by Baillie. Jim McInally’s freekick found Mixu Paatelainen, who got a foot to the ball, which went spinning up in the air and was eventually

headed in by the luckless defender under pressure from Paatelainen.

2000 - United 1-1 Rangers | League (SPL)

Smith knew he did not have to fire up his players for this one and allowed his most recent signing, the £80,000 acquisition from Oxford, Derek Lilley, to make an impressive debut in which he scored a memorable goal. Dominating Rangers finally went ahead when Mols rolled a neat little pass onto the foot of Claudio Reyna, who fired home.

so it was not a happy return.

Alex Smith’s side staged a spirited fight back and were soon rewarded for their valiant efforts. A mistake by Lorenzo Amoruso allowed Beta Naveda to steal possession and knock the ball to Lilley, who thundered it past Klos from 20 yards.

Denis McCallum centred perfectly, Jacky Kay allowed the ball to run to Williamson a few yards away, and the centre slammed the ball home in great style.

The three scorers in that astonishing last ten minutes, as Eamonn Bannon congratulated Iain Ferguson after his spectacular third.

This was a Christmas cracker with an explosive finish. Ten minutes from time, Hearts deservedly led by a single goal and the prospect of a United

victory looked remote, to say the least.

Yet the final scoreline made a mockery of such gloomy thoughts.

Hearts dominated the first half, during which the visitors had the ball in the net on three occasions. Fortunately, only one counted. That came on 27 minutes when a John Colquhoun shot was blocked

by Billy Thomson, but John Robertson rammed in the rebound. Dave Narey and John Holt both cleared shots off the line in an uncomfortable first 45 minutes.

Gradually, as the second half progressed, their midfield stranglehold was prised open. Ian Redford might have equalised, but then Jim McInally and Eamonn Bannon enabled Paul Sturrock to slot home. Two minutes later, Bannon embarked on a run from midfield to the edge of the box before firing a superb low shot in off the far post.

Remarkably, Iain Ferguson’s last minute goal was even more breathtaking.

Ferguson robbed Sandy Jardine 40 yards out and promptly propelled a lob high into the net over a bemused Henry Smith.

An inch of snow had been successfully cleared at a turbulent Love Street, where boardroom arguments and the sacking of Jim Clunie had not affected the playing staff, as the Buddies had won all four of their previous league matches,

with both clubs sitting joint fourth in the Premier Division.

It had been stated leading up to the game that changes were a very real possibility and boss Gordon Chisholm carried out the threat, as Stuart Duff, Lee Miller and David Fernandez were all left out from the side that lost at Livingston.

by Scott Wilson, who bulleted home a header. United were, however, back in front four minutes before half time when Barry Robson fired in a free kick for what proved to be the winner.
