LEE

SHARP Good afternoon everyone, and welcome back to Tannadice. Firstly, I’d like to send my best wishes to the Manager and hopefully we’ll have him back with us soon. In the meantime, myself and the rest of the staff have been preparing the players as normal for what we know will be another difficult Premiership game this afternoon. Tuesday night at Motherwell was obviously disappointing in terms of the result, but the circumstances of the game made it extremely difficult for the players. Before the sending off, I thought it had all the makings of a really good game. We were organised, getting on the ball and causing Motherwell problems, but playing the best part of 80 minutes with ten men was always going to be a big ask. What I couldn’t fault was the effort, work rate and commitment from the players.

Even with ten men, we continued to get ourselves into some decent areas and stayed in the game for a long period. There are things we will look at and learn from, as we always do, but there were also positives to take from the way the group stuck together. We now have an opportunity to respond in front of our own supporters this afternoon. We know Falkirk will provide a tough test, but our focus has been on getting ourselves organised, looking at where we can improve and making sure we are ready to put in a positive performance. Finally, the backing from the supporters has been excellent again. Hopefully we can give you a performance and result to enjoy this afternoon. Enjoy the game!

A CLOSER LOOK AT

FALKIRK Last season saw Falkirk return to the top flight of Scottish football after a 15 season absence. Back to back title wins had propelled the Bairns from League One to the Premiership, where they marked an impressive return with a top six finish, ending the campaign just eight points short of a European place.

Their return to the top table began with an entertaining 2-2 draw against a United side fresh from European action in Luxembourg.

narrow defeat at Celtic Park last weekend leaves Falkirk sitting 11th, with only pointless Kilmarnock below them.

Although Falkirk managed just one victory from their opening seven Premiership fixtures, they soon found their feet and eventually secured sixth place.

If last season's meetings are anything to go by, goals should certainly be on the agenda this afternoon.

There was also a strong Scottish Cup run, with victories over Hearts and United taking them to the semi finals, where Dunfermline ended their hopes on penalties. The new campaign has started in similarly slow fashion. Failure to defeat Ayr United and Alloa Athletic saw the Bairns eliminated from the League Cup group stage, before an opening day Premiership defeat against St Mirren. A goalless draw at Fir Park followed, while a 6

Following the four goal thriller on the opening day, Falkirk came to Tannadice Park and recorded a 3-0 victory. United gained revenge in February, twice coming from behind to claim a dramatic 3-2 win, before the sides met for a fourth time in the Scottish Cup quarter final. On that occasion, a large and vocal travelling United support left the Falkirk Stadium disappointed following a 2-1 defeat.

THE MANAGER Widely respected throughout Scottish football, John McGlynn took charge of Falkirk in May 2022 and has overseen a remarkable transformation in the club's fortunes. His first campaign produced a second place finish, although their promotion hopes were ended emphatically by Airdrieonians in the play offs. There would be no such disappointment the following season. McGlynn guided Falkirk to the League One title without losing a single league match, before masterminding a second successive promotion as the Bairns lifted the Championship trophy 12 months later. That achievement also saw him named PFA Scotland

Manager of the Year for a record third time. Having started his coaching career with Easthouses Lily and Musselburgh Athletic, the former Berwick Rangers midfielder received his big break when Jim Jefferies brought him to Hearts in 1996. After guiding the young Jambos to the Scottish Youth Cup in 2000, he progressed into the first team coaching setup and later had two spells as caretaker manager. McGlynn took on his first permanent senior managerial role with Raith Rovers in 2006. Spells with Hearts and Livingston followed, along with a scouting role at Celtic, before McGlynn returned to Raith Rovers in September 2018. He added another League One title to his CV in 2019/20 and spent three and a half years at Stark's Park before making the move to Falkirk. Now 64, McGlynn has continued to enhance his reputation with the work he has done at the Falkirk Stadium, taking the Bairns from League One to the top six of the Premiership in just three seasons.

LYALL CAMERON Lyall Cameron returns to the City of Discovery after joining United on a season long loan from Rangers. The 23 year old midfielder arrives following a spell with Aberdeen during the second half of last season and brings plenty of Premiership experience to Jim Goodwin’s squad. After successful loan spells with Peterhead and Montrose, Cameron established himself as a first team regular with Dundee and played an important role in their promotion to the Premiership in 2022/23. He continued to impress following their return to the top flight, before enjoying his most productive campaign in 2024/25 when he scored 14 goals in all competitions. His performances also earned international recognition with Scotland and ultimately secured a move to Rangers. Cameron featured for the Ibrox side in Europe last summer, finding the net during UEFA Champions League qualifying, before spending the second half of last season on loan with Aberdeen. A former member of the United Academy and from a family of Arabs, Cameron is no stranger to the Club or the city. His ability to get forward, create chances and contribute goals will provide another dimension to United’s midfield options as he looks to make his own mark in Tangerine. 9

ESSELINK It was great to get the result at Kilmarnock last weekend. After three defeats, we knew how important it was to respond and I thought, after the opening few minutes, we controlled the game really well. To score four goals and keep our first clean sheet of the season made it a really positive afternoon for us. We have been working hard every day on the way we want to play. There have been spells in games where we have played some good football without getting the rewards, so it was pleasing to see everything come together at Kilmarnock. We were brave on the ball, played out from the back and created chances, and hopefully that is something we can continue to build on. Tuesday at Motherwell was obviously a very different game. Going down to ten men so early made things difficult and the result was disappointing, especially after the performance at

Kilmarnock. As players, though, we have to move on quickly. There is another game in front of us today and another opportunity to respond. From a defensive point of view, we know how important clean sheets are. The one at Kilmarnock gave us a lot of confidence and that is the standard we have to keep working towards as a defensive unit and as a team. It has been a quick turnaround with three games in a short period, but that is part of football and our full focus is now on Falkirk. The support at Kilmarnock was brilliant and you stayed with us again through a difficult night at Motherwell. We really appreciate that backing and hopefully we can give you something to enjoy this afternoon. Enjoy the game!

Few supporters heading to this particular match would have expected to come away with a programme. In fact, technically there wasn't one on sale at all, as this unusual four page issue was handed out free of charge. The publication itself was a smaller version of the four page format previously issued by the Club. That style had been upgraded at the beginning of the 1967/68 season, so it was somewhat ironic that this one off production marked a return to the former format, albeit in a smaller size. For programme collectors, though, it was a real bonus. Indeed, having edited the programme at the time, its production was obviously a well kept secret, as the first I knew of its existence was when approaching Tannadice Park on the day of the match. With only four pages to work with, content was understandably limited.

There was a brief but informative history of the Dewar Shield, while another section detailed a competition being run by the sponsors in the lead up to Christmas. The prize, believe it or not, was a thoroughbred racehorse! The back page was occupied by a full page advertisement for the sponsors, completing what was a fairly simple production but one which has become an interesting item for collectors.

final score, but little else about how the match unfolded. Fortunately, the Courier's coverage from the time provides a much fuller account of a dominant United performance and helps bring another largely forgotten fixture back to life. Among the action that afternoon was Dennis Gillespie, who fired United ahead on the way to a comprehensive victory.

Both clubs listed strong sides in the programme, although determining exactly how the teams eventually lined up required a little more digging. Unusually, there is no mention of the match in the otherwise splendid Arab Archive, but a look through the contemporary Courier report confirms that both sides did indeed field strong teams, with United ultimately coming out on top. So, what is the Falkirk connection to this week's Programme Parade? Normally we would feature an issue involving our visitors, but unfortunately we do not have a United versus Falkirk programme from the Dewar Shield to showcase. Instead, we can turn to another meeting between the clubs in the same competition, which had taken place just a couple of years earlier. That particular encounter came at the penultimate stage of the competition and proved to be a memorable afternoon for United, who ran out emphatic 6-1 winners over the Bairns. Once again, information surrounding the fixture is relatively scarce. The Arab Archive records the basic details and the

ZIDANE IQBAL Dundee United completed the deadline day signing of Iraqi international midfielder Zidane Iqbal, who joins the Club from FC Utrecht on a two year deal, with a Club held option for a further year.

Jim Goodwin believes the midfielder will add another dimension to his squad.

Born in Manchester, the 23 year old joined Manchester United’s academy at the age of nine and progressed through the ranks before making his senior debut against Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League in December 2021.

“We feel he adds something different and can occupy different positions within our midfield ranks.”

Iqbal later moved to the Netherlands in search of regular first team football, joining FC Utrecht and going on to make more than 60 appearances during his time in the Eredivisie.

“He has real pedigree and is off the back of a successful World Cup with Iraq,” said the United boss.

Iqbal added: “I’m delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started. My conversations with the manager have been positive and I’m excited to meet my new teammates and the rest of the staff.” Zidane will wear number 14 in Tangerine.

On the international stage, Iqbal made his Iraq debut in January 2022 and has since collected 28 senior caps. He featured in all three of his country’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including an impressive showing against France.

5 SEPTEMBER leg of their Qualifying Cup first round tie. Hibs had defeated the Loons on their way to the final of the competition the previous season, but Forfar gained their revenge in emphatic fashion. The Evening Telegraph declared that “Hibs were well wacked by Forfar Athletic” and questioned the decision to deploy Collie Martin, normally a forward, in defence.

On this day in 1914, Dundee Hibs endured a difficult afternoon as they fell to a 4-0 defeat against Forfar Athletic in the first 24

ShedTalk

Martin was caught out as Langeland opened the scoring after only ten minutes and the visitors went on to take firm control of the tie. Eleven years later, United picked up their first point as a top flight club

with a 1-1 draw against Motherwell. Having suffered three straight defeats at the beginning of their maiden Division One campaign, United came agonisingly close to recording a first victory at that level. Willie Oswald found the net and his goal looked set to secure both points, only for Motherwell to deny the newcomers late on. There was considerably more to celebrate in 1956 when United overturned a two goal first leg deficit to defeat Arbroath 5-0 in the second leg of their League Cup play off. Archie Aikman set the comeback in motion after only two minutes before Jimmy Reid levelled the tie by half time.

Despite difficult wind and rain, United dominated after the interval. Johnny Coyle put the Terrors ahead on aggregate after 59 minutes before Reid struck his second just two minutes later. Coyle then added another to complete an emphatic turnaround and book a Dundee Derby in the quarter finals.

Donaldson parried Andy Rolland's effort and Billy McManus inadvertently turned the rebound into his own net. The advantage lasted only 12 minutes, with John Leslie equalising for Saints after good work from Ian McPhee.

sixth successive League Cup semi final. Three years later, Celtic were again the visitors, although this time neither side could find a breakthrough in a lively goalless draw. Paul Sturrock came closest for United in the opening stages when he drove towards goal and forced Allen McKnight to tip his effort over the bar. Billy Thomson was also called into action before the interval, producing an excellent full length save to deny Tommy Burns Chances followed at both ends, but the two defences held firm and the points were shared.

United's remarkable sequence of draws continued on this day in 1970 with a 1-1 stalemate against St Johnstone at Muirton Park.

A memorable League Cup victory followed in 1984 as Celtic were beaten 2-1 after extra time. United went ahead after 65 minutes when Ralph Milne found the unmarked Paul Sturrock, who made no mistake with his finish.

Jerry Kerr's men had drawn six of their opening seven league matches and were under considerable pressure during the first half.

Alan McInally levelled for Celtic with seven minutes remaining to force an additional period, but United required just two minutes of extra time to regain the lead.

However, it was United who went ahead seven minutes after the restart when goalkeeper Jim

Substitute John Clark finished a move involving Milne and Sturrock to send Jim McLean's side into a 25
