THE GAFFER

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Tannadice!

We return to league action following a really positive international break for the group.

Looking individually, Jort van der Sande was on the scoresheet, Richard Odada got some well-needed minutes and David Babunski was involved for North Macedonia. Going into the break, we had a lot of momentum off of what has been a really strong start to the campaign.

I think the players have taken some real confidence with important results over some stiff

opposition, but we’re under no illusions as to how tough a test it will be this afternoon.

A lot was made about the Old Firm fixture, but I think Rangers’ result at Ross County shows what kind of a side they can be and how dangerous they will make it if we don’t get our tactics right.

With that being said, we believe we’ve got players and matchwinners within our own ranks so it should make for a really exciting fixture. A lot of work has gone on off the pitch to ensure we were back in the top flight this season, and these are the kind of games we all look forward to. We have to stick to the

task and make life difficult for them if we want to take maximum points from the game.

The atmosphere in the Dundee Derby was electric. It really carried us through the game and we are hoping for more of the same this afternoon.

I think the fact that there isn’t a ticket to be had speaks volumes of how happy the supporters are at the moment. It’s up to us to carry that momentum and put on a performance our supporters can be proud of.

I hope you all enjoy the game!

A MESSAGE TO OUR SUPPORTERS

We hope this message finds you well and fired up after a fantastic start to the season!

Together, we’ve made strides on and off the pitch, and we wanted to take a moment to reflect on a busy summer and our return to the William Hill Scottish Premiership.

We want to thank you for your incredible backing so far!

BUILDING FOUNDATIONS

It’s been a great start to the campaign after reclaiming our place at the top table of Scottish football with last term’s Championship title triumph.

The foundations and work for this campaign began in earnest well before that enjoyable May evening.

That work was the beginning of a 24-month short-term strategy put together to ensure promotion from the Championship. This, coupled with an intense recruitment drive, improved the squad to provide the stability and strong foundations required for the club to continue our growth back in the Scottish Premiership.

During the process, squad development has witnessed a massive turnaround including the extension of five contracts within the existing squad - significantly including long-term deals for academy graduates Miller Thomson and Ross Graham.

It also saw 15 players leave the club after the 23/24 season to make way for 13 new additions; nine of those on permanent deals and four - including the

returning Jack Walton - on loan deals. Subsequently, a further three players have moved on to pastures new before the end of the most recent transfer window.

The squad has settled in well so far and currently can claim the following:

Unbeaten in the league

Third place in the table

Three consecutive clean sheets

Into the last eight of the Premier Sports Cup

As importantly, we can enjoy six Dundee United players’ international recognition this weekend, four at senior level with Miller Thomson and Emmanuel Adegboyega receiving inaugural callups to under-21 duty for Scotland and the Republic of Ireland respectively.

Indeed, it has been several years since the club enjoyed such an array of recognition at international level.

A blockbuster Dundee derby raised the curtain on league business after our successful Premier Sports Cup Group B campaign and set the pace for the new season. Almost 14,000 supporters packed into the Calforth Construction Arena at Tannadice Park to watch both halves of the city of Discovery go blow-for-blow in the first iteration of the fixture in over two years, as an enthralling 2-2 draw unfolded in DD3. This event

was lauded across the country and it was a real reminder of both what we had missed and how important the fixture is to the Scottish calendar.

Since then, we remain undefeated in the William Hill Premiership, having subsequently clashed with Ross County, St Johnstone and Heart of Midlothian respectively, whilst also securing progression to the Last Eight of the Premier Sports Cup with victory over St Mirren.

Indeed this is the first United side to traverse through August without losing since our Scottish Cup-winning squad of 2009/10.

All of our exciting summer recruits have played an integral role in our bright start, with all but one of our seven competitive goals throughout the month directly involving a new signing in one way or another.

At the other end, United currently boast the third-

best defensive record in the division, and only the sides directly above us in the table, Aberdeen and Celtic, have leaked fewer goals.

IMPROVING OUR HOME, TOGETHER

Your support is what makes Tannadice our home, and we’ve been working hard to create a better environment to be enjoyed on matchdays. In partnership with CalForth Construction, we’ve made great strides in enhancing the aesthetics of the stadium and the matchday experience.

A fresh coat of paint has revitalised the stadium’s appearance and reinforced our iconic presence on the street. We’ve improved roofing, accessibility, and emergency lighting, making the stadium safer and more welcoming for all. Work has also been ongoing on turnstiles, with

a number modernised with automated technology and further mechanical and electrical enhancements to ensure safe and plentiful access to the stadium. Additionally, new astro turf has been laid around the pitch side, contributing to the stadium’s professional appearance as well as providing better environments for players at corners.

Further upgrades include enhancements to the home dressing room from Spaces Taylored, creating a more modern and comfortable habitat for the players before they take to the field to battle for you.

Our Ticket Office and Club Shop have also been refreshed, with more work still to come, making sure the first places you see on matchdays welcome you to Tannadice.

While there is still a long way to go, these updates show our commitment to creating a first-class experience for everyone who visits our home stadium.

AN ENERGISED REVAMP

We’ve also made upgrades to our commercial areas to enhance the atmosphere on matchdays. The new Fancave, sponsored by Carling, and our Beer Garden have been a hit, adding to the buzz around the stadium and showcasing the very best of DUFC Hospitality.

Commercial revenue has seen great growth and seasonal hospitality numbers have exceeded past seasons remarkably and this has an impact on availability for future games - so don’t miss out by contacting the commercial team now!

RETAIL AND CLUB SHOP UPDATES

We’re now into the second year of our partnership with Italian kit manufacturer Erreà, where we have collaborated on distinctive, high-quality kits that honour the club’s heritage while embracing modern designs. These kits have been among our best-sellers, with training, travel and leisure wear also flying off the shelf this season. Feedback and sales are key indicators of the success of this partnership and it is a delight to continue to work with Errea as we embark on the journey of next year’s designs already.

We have many more exciting ranges and products to come this season – including our third kit, and retro throwbacks to name but a few.

Keep an eye out for these exciting additions in the new year!

YOU AT THE HEART!

This season, we’ve set a new record with over 6,400 season tickets sold – an amazing show of support from all of you. This incredible backing reflects the passion and loyalty of the Dundee United family and fuels our shared ambition for the season ahead. There is still time to become one of our season ticket holders and pro rata offers are available now to enable you to secure your seat for the big games ahead.

We also witnessed just under 10,000 fans attend the recent St Johnstone home victory and with exciting fixtures just around the corner, it is clear that a large United following can continue to help us achieve our collective targets.

There’s a fantastic atmosphere around the club right now, and none of this would be possible without you. From the players on the pitch to every one of you in the stands, we’re all in this together.

We can’t wait to hear your cheers at the upcoming fixtures.

EARLY SIGHTINGS

Our opening chance of the match fell inside three minutes and really should have amounted to more.

Clever hold-up play from Jort van der Sande won an offensive free-kick which David Babunski lofted into the area. It was met in the air by Emmanuel Adegboyega but with the space of the penalty area afforded to him, his header was way off the mark.

Hearts went close through James Penrice in the aftermath, but the fullback could only drag his shot wide of the far post.

Jack Walton was then on hand to deny Kenneth Vargas with a downward header at the far post as the clock struck 10 minutes.

TEMPERS FLARE

Ten minutes out from the break, we were forced into a change as Kevin Holt pulled up off the ball. Vicko Ševelj was the man to take his place and was involved almost immediately as Shankland went in with a high boot.

Will Ferry was the first United man on the scene, resulting in cautions for both him and the Hearts captain.

ON THE FRONT FOOT

It was the men in white and tangerine who enjoyed the opening second-half chances. Just minutes after the restart, Trapanovski found himself racing clear, but couldn’t shift the ball to Babunski quick enough and the opportunity was squandered.

Ross Graham then went close with a back

post header following Babunski’s corner, but his effort landed just over Craig Gordon’s crossbar.

SPARKING THE FUSE

After some consistent pressure in and around the Hearts area, we eventually found the breakthrough.

A clever backheel from Ferry carved the opportunity as Graham picked up the pieces 20 yards from goal. Looking up, he let fly with what appeared to be a relatively tame effort, with a deflection enough to wrong-foot Gordon and find the near corner!

What remained was a showcase of how to defend a lead, scrapping for every ball as the clock ticked on into six additional minutes before Nick Walsh brought the curtains down.

Premier Sports Cup Quarter Final

Despite an early setback against Falkirk, The Terrors have been commanding in what has played out.

A professional performance against Stenhousemuir saw Kristijan Trapanovski have a standout night at Tannadice, scoring once and assisting twice in his home debut. Our momentum continued with a dramatic win against Ayr United, thanks to a memorable debut goal from academy graduate Brandon Forbes before we saw off Buckie Thistle by scoring five on the north coast.

Ross Graham’s close-range header was the crucial moment that saw us overcome St Mirren and secure our place in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals. Now, we’re set for an exciting away trip to face Motherwell as we continue our cup journey!

Help roar us on to Hampden!

RON YEATS

Everyone connected with the club was saddened to hear of the recent passing of our former player Ron Yeats.

Hailing from Aberdeen, he was an U15 schoolboy international who played for junior club Aberdeen Lads’ Club. In 1956, following a leg break, Yeats had a trial with Elgin City, then a Highland League club, but was not offered a contract.

Having just turned 19, Ron joined United in December 1957 under boss Tommy Gray. Making an immediate positive impact, he was an ever-present for the remainder of that season. With the club in those days being part-time, he continued working in a slaughterhouse in Aberdeen.

Re-signed for 1958-59, an injury sidelined him for four months, but he still featured in more than half the games, again demonstrating his importance to the side.

When Jerry Kerr was appointed manager in 1959, the former Alloa boss recognised the jewel in the crown he had in the towering defender. And just as Bill Shankly would do when acquiring the pivot, Kerr looked to build his team around him. There was, however, one problem.

Yeats had been based

at Aldershot after being called up for National Service, so one of the new manager’s first acts was to visit his commanding officer and obtain his release for duties on the pitch on Saturdays. It proved a masterstroke with Yeats only absent on three occasions as United finished second in the old Second Division behind St Johnstone and gain promotion.

Season 1960/61 was to be Ron’s last with United and he was still travelling regularly from his Army base to take his place in the side. However, his outstanding performances in the top tier fuelled speculation over his future mounted as the season progressed, not least after blotting out England International centreforward Bobby Smith as the British Army defeated Tottenham Hotspur.

With safety for newly promoted United comfortably ensured, Ron made his final appearance in a 3-3 draw with Aberdeen at Tannadice.

Deputising him for the final four games was Doug Smith who, like Yeats, was also signed from Aberdeen Lads Club and proved a reasonable replacement five that he filled that position for the next decade and a half!

In his four years as a Terror, Ron made 118 appearances but scored

only once – a penalty in a 6-1 home win over East Stirling in February 1960.

Just a couple of weeks before his conscription was coming to an end, he left to join Liverpool for a fee of £30,000 on 22nd July 1961. Liverpool Manager Bill Shankly, described him as a “colossus” and vital to securing promotion from the second division and soon installed him as captain. And he became a legendary figure at Anfield during the 1960s.

After helping them to the Second Division title in his first season he then captained them to two top-flight league titles, the FA Cup in 1965, and three Charity Shields. More than 400 of his 454 games (in which he scored 16 goals) for the Merseysiders were as skipper, a tally only beaten by Steven Gerrard. He went on to represent Tranmere Rovers, Stalybridge Celtic, Los Angeles Skyhawks, Barrow, Santa Barbara Condors and Formby - as well as playing twice for Scotland in 1964 and 1965 - before hanging up his boots in the late 1970s.

Ultimately, he returned to Anfield in 1986 as chief scout, a role he held for two decades until retiring 2006.

The thoughts of everyone at Dundee United Football Club are with Ron’s family and friends at this time.

FOCUS ON RANGERS

Rangers visit Tannadice this afternoon having spent two weeks stewing on their comprehensive 3-0 derby defeat at Parkhead.

With just three wins from their seven matches this season, the Ibrox side will be desperate to pick up maximum points to leapfrog ourselves and stay in touch with Celtic at the top of the table.

Recent history in this fixture is on their side, with United winning only one of our previous ten meetings, courtesy of a Jamie Robson strike just over three years ago.

With League Cup and Europa League clashes against Dundee and Malmo up after today’s encounter, our guest’s season could well be shaped by these three matches.

The former Belgian internationalist has been in charge for 11 months, having signed an initial four-year contract last autumn.

The 50-year-old played for Beerschot, Genk, Coventry City, Club Brugge, and Germinal Beerschot, winning two Belgian League titles and four national cups. After retiring in 2011, he coached Club Brugge’s U21s and became firstteam assistant manager.

Appointed as WaaslandBeveren’s manager in 2017, he soon moved to

Genk, where he led them to the Belgian title the next season.

In 2019, the lure of his former club and Belgian top dogs Club Brugge proved too much to turn down and he duly delivered two league titles before an ill-fated season at Monaco saw him sacked for the first time in his career last summer.

He tasted silverwear with Rangers in his first season - winning the League Cup.

ONE TO WATCH CYRIEL

DESSERS

With five goals from seven matches already this term, the Belgian-born, Nigerian international has his sights firmly set on beating the 23 strikes he recorded last term in what was his debut season in blue.

Signed from Italian side Cremonese on a four-year deal, the 29-year-old has been a regular scorer throughout a career which has seen him play most of his football in Belgian and the Netherlands.

Career highlights for the OH Leuven youth product thus far include scoring 29 times whilst helping NAC Breda reach the Eredivisie in 2016/17 and finishing as Europa Conference League top scorer in 2021/22 as Feyenoord finished runners-up.

MOHAMED DIOMANDE spent the second half of last season on loan at Ibrox from Danish Superliga club Nordsjælland and made the move permanent in the summer.

VACLAV CERNY a 26-yearold attacking midfielder has joined the club on a season long loan from Wolfsburg and has previously turned out for Ajax, Utrecht and FC Twente.

OSCAR CORTES’ loan last season was cut short due to injury, but he has returned from RC Lens for a second spell.

HAMZA IGAMANR made his debut in the derby defeat to Celtic. Last year saw the 21-year-old forward lift the

u23 African Cup of Nations and his outstanding form led to a £1.7m move from AS Far on a five-year contract.

ROBIN PRÖPPER

cost the club

£1.5m from FC Twente. The 6’ 3” centre half has also represented De Graafschap and Heracles in his homeland and has started three of Rangers’ four Premiership matches this far.

JEFTE signed a fouryear deal, signing from Fluminense. The 20-yearold send last season on loan at Cypriot side APOEL and helped them to the league title. Sent off in the Champion’s League defeat to Dynamo Kyiv, he has also been booked in his last two outings.

CONNOR BARRON left Aberdeen after seventy 76 appearances to sign a four-year contract with Rangers. The ballwinning midfielder shows a footballing intelligence that belies his 22-years and is an excellent passer of the ball.

CLINTON NSIALA joined from AC Milan in the summer having previously come through the ranks from Nantes. The 19-year-old left-footed defender has yet to make his debut.

LIAM KELLY joined from Motherwell to offer backup to Jack Butland. The 28-year-old goalkeeper’s career has now gone full circle after starting his career as a youth at Ibrox.

IAIN MCDONALD

A highly talented winger whose career was sadly cut short by injury before celebrating his 25th birthday.

Edinburgh-born Iain signed for Rangers from Carrickvale in 1969, and the 17-yearold impressed greatly on his debut, scoring against Ayr United. However, he was stretchered off in one of his early matches with the Glasgow side and was constantly affected with cartilage trouble thereafter.

After starting just 12 matches and making one sub appearance during the next three years, he joined United on a free transfer in the summer of 1974.

The speedy left winger made his competitive debut in the opening match of the season, coming on as a substitute against Ayr in the League Cup. He rarely missed a game over the rest of that

season in which the club finished fourththen their best-ever campaign.

In addition, he featured in European matches against Juil Petrosani and Bursaspor and joined Dave Narey and Andy Gray with the Scotland u23 squad for a match against Romania but was an unused substitute.

Iain’s second season at Tannadice was plagued by injury, with six of his eight appearances in the first half of the campaign coming from the substitutes bench - including a third European appearance against Keflavik. In February 1976, he was forced to retire from the game, still aged just 23. A benefit match was arranged for him in October 1976 against a Dundee XI, with several guest players turning out, including John Grieg and Ronnie Glavin. Just over 5,000 witnessed a 7-7 draw.

‘DUNDEE AGAIN DEFEAT LOCAL RIVALS. DING-DONG STRUGGLE AT TANNADICE

PARK’ was the Courier’s headline for the first-ever league derby held at Tannadice. Dundee Hibs let their supporters down, as many had expected them to avenge their 5-1 defeat to Dundee at Dens just a month earlier. George Lamb and Bill Nairn netted the goals.

1928

EAST FIFE 4-5 DUNDEE UTD DIVISION TWO

Harry Michie opened the scoring for United, but Phil Weir quickly leveled for East Fife and later completed a hat-trick to put his team ahead. United fought back with goals from Johnny Hart and Michie to tie the game. In a tense finish, United’s goalkeeper Harry McGregor made key saves, and in the final minute, Duncan Hutchison

scored the winner from a Geordie Henderson cross.

1951

QUEEN’S PARK 1-2 DUNDEE UTD LEAGUE (B DIVISION)

To avoid a colour clash, United wore red jerseys and their faces were the same colour as their tops at the end of this smash-and-grab. The Spiders had 90% of the play but were all but ruthless. And although Harnet did eventually cancel our George Grant’s 19th-minute opener late on, Frank Quinn netted the winner three minutes later!

1970

DUNDEE UTD 3-2 GRASSHOPPERS

A night that looked to be going all wrong for United was turned on its head in the final ten minutes. United, two down midway through the second half following goals from Ove

Grahn and Peter Meier, came back from the dead to clinch a vital victory thanks to goals from Iain Reid, Stuart Markland and Alec Reid.

1984

MORTON 0-3 DUNDEE UTD LEAGUE

A run of three successive defeats was halted by this first away win of the season. A Davie Dodds double and Paul Hegarty header secured the points.

ROSS COUNTY 2-4

DUNDEE UTD | LEAGUE (PREMIERSHIP)

Jackie McNamara’s troops were simply unstoppable in the first half, going in three up at the Interval. Gary Mackay-Steven opened the scoring from the spot after 18 minutes and Stuart Armstrong struck the second two minutes later before Ryan Gauld added the third. Nadir Çiftçi chipped in with a fourth midway through the second period. Although County responded with goals from Ivan Sproule and Rocco Quinn, it was too little too late.
