It’s a huge game in store today and one everyone should be excited for.

That being said, our approach is the same as any other match and our preperation doesn’t change. Nothing is going to be decided this afternoon but it’s a good opportunity for us to put down a marker.

There’s a long, long way to go and we knew this was going to be a hugely competitive league.

It hasn’t surprised me that Raith are up at the top end battling away - they’re a good side with a terrific manager. These are the games we want to be involved in and hopefully we see two teams going out to win the match.

We’re on a great run in the league, still unbeaten and the whole group are taking a lot of pride in that. We have a strong squad with great characters and we will never get carried away.

Currently on a phenomenal run of form with nine wins from their last ten matches, Raith Rovers’ visit to Tannadice this afternoon sees the sides go head-to-head in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash.

Only Airdrieonians have defeated The Fifers in the Championship this season, that 1-0 reversal coming back in September.

A 1-1 draw at Stark’s Park back in early October saw Louis Moult’s close-range header deservedly cancel out Lewis Vaughan’s opener and both sides have remained well ahead of the rest meaning today’s encounter gives both sides the chance to gain the upper hand in the title race title.

stark’s park summer SIGNINGS Dylan Corr signed on a one-year deal having left Celtic despite featuring regularly for their B side last term. The promising 19-year-old central defender fractured his toe in three places in a ViaPlay Cup tie against Annan and has missed most of the season, only returning recently.

After a career spent mainly in his homeland, Irishman Daniel O’Reilly joined Hamilton Academical in 2022. The former Fulham youth who was capped at U17 level, made over 60 appearances for Accies before his November move to Kirkcaldy on a short-term deal until January. The defender scored at both ends in last week’s win over Partick.

Former Hearts youth Scott McGill has featured intermittently after penning a one-year deal at the end of his loan spell last term. An attacking midfielder who adds mobility and physicality to his excellent range of passing, the 21-year-old

has previously featured on loan for Airdrieonians and Kelty Hearts.

Former Terror Keith Watson is another who signed a one-year deal in the summer. The versatile defender made 152 appearances during his time at Tannadice, finding the net 12 times. Unfortunately, the likeable 34-year-old has had another injury-ravaged season.

Much travelled Euan Murray offers the versatility of being able to play both at the back and as a defensive midfielder. The 29-year-old came through the Motherwell academy and has featured for Clyde, Stenhousemuir, Dunfermline and Kilmarnock as well as several English non-league sides. In his second spell at the club, he was red-carded in last month’s win over Queens Park.

Josh Mullin joined on a three-year deal following his departure from Ayr United. The 31-year-old attacking midfielder has scored twice this season with his goals coming in cup competitions against Albion Rovers and Montrose.

A Dunfermline Athletic youth product, striker Callum Smith’s career took a while to get going but 30 goals in the past two seasons at Airdrieonians have seen him become hot property. The 24-year-old’s goals helped The Diamonds to promotion last term, and he has seven to his name already this campaign.

Jack Hamilton was recruited from Livingston for a nominal fee as he entered the last year of his contract. The 23-year-old striker started only six times in as many years for The Lions having been loaned out to Penicuik Juniors, Berwick, Alloa, QoS, East Fife, Arbroath and Hartlepool. The six-foot target man has scored six times this term.

Appointed in May 2022 after the departure of John McGlynn, the 42-year-old has taken Raith from mid-table to title challengers.

The former Hibernian, Rangers and Norwich player was capped six times by Scotland during a career in which he operated across the back four and as a defensive midfielder.

As a manager, he cut his teeth at Dumbarton before an ill-fated spell at St Mirren. Two play-off final defeats at Airdrieonians followed in 2021 and 2022 as he transformed the club and set the foundations for their eventual promotion last term.

This season, he has Rovers playing expansive, attractive, attacking football which has seen their crowds dramatically increase.

The 29-year-old needs no introduction to United fans having been a popular player during his time at Tannadice. Born in Edinburgh and progressing through the youth ranks at Hibernian, the central midfielder made his first-team debut in 2012 at the age of seventeen.

Initially moving to United on loan at the start of the 2017/18 season, Sam made the move permanent in the January and went on to feature 83 times (+19 as a sub), scoring 12 times.

The hard-working box-to-box midfielder featured in seventeen of our twenty-eight Championship matches as we lifted the title in 2019/20 but left to join USL club Phoenix Rising in January of that season.

A short spell at Dundalk followed en route to Starks Park where he signed a two-and-a-halfyear deal in December last year.

Nicknamed ‘Elvis’ due to his resemblance to the American pop idol, the no-nonsense central defender joined United from Larkhall Thistle a month before his 17th birthday in March 1972.

He was a regular in the reserves for almost three years before finally making his first team debut against Hibernian in January 1975.

His only goals for United came just two months later, both in the same match and from the same penalty spot, against Partick Thistle at Tannadice. The defender had a tough time getting into a side that had several good players in his position but by the end of 1975-76, he was holding on to a regular place.

However, following an injury late in 1976 he was side-lined for several months and after that, he could not re-establish himself in the line-up, given the Hegarty-Narey partnership had been formed.

Back in the reserves, he left Tannadice in July 1978 after making 33 appearances.

He became Raith Rovers’ record signing (£12,000) when moving to Starks Park the following season and Elvis became a firm favourite who is fondly remembered by the Rovers support, and his old teammates. Probably not so fondly remembered by opposing strikers though, he was as hard as nails!

He spent six years with the Kirkcaldy club, playing 206 times, scoring 11 goals, and was inducted into Rovers Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jim Leishman signed him for The Pars while he was still caretaker manager in October 1983. ‘Leish’ saw him as the man to tighten the defence and provide some experience, and he played an important role in the early days of his management.

Although still a signed player at the start of season 1985-86, the McCathie-Young partnership had been established and there was no place in the side for Allan. He left East End having played 41 games and in November 1985 returned to the junior ranks with Glenrothes Juniors whom he served for several seasons in November 1985 and later had a spell in management at that level with Thornton Hibs.

Allan then worked in the stores at Mackintosh in Mitchelson Industrial Estate.

Depay was just so quick/strong/ skilful. Cazorla was just such a clever player, so tidy with everything he did on the ball.

loan report Six of our up-and-coming youngsters continue to cut their teeth in the world of senior football across the SPFL pyramid with their respective loan spells away from Tannadice. It’s time to check in with them to review their contributions throughout November.

MILLER THOMSON Deployed in central midfield, Miller Thomson started four competitive fixtures throughout the month, putting no fewer than 355 minutes under his belt.

Thomson and Montrose kicked off November in style as the Angus outfit dismantled relegation-threatened Edinburgh City in the capital.

The 19-year-old added number four at Meadowbank whilst also registering an assist in a resounding 5-1 victory. It’s a result that pushed Stewart Petrie’s side back up to third in the League One table.

After securing further starts in subsequent fixtures against Annan Athletic and Cove Rangers, he missed Montrose’s Scottish Cup Third Round tie against Edinburgh City.

On Tuesday, he was reintroduced to the starting XI with Falkirk the visitors to Links Park. The sides played out a goalless draw under the floodlights - the Bairns remaining undefeated in the third tier and Montrose holding on to their place in the top four.

logan chalmers Following a stellar start to his second temporary stint at Somerset Park, which featured seven goal contributions from ten Championship starts, Logan Chalmers has suffered a slight stutter in his Ayr United exploits.

The Honest Men hosted Queen’s Park on Matchday 11 and, despite taking a two-goal lead, they failed to put three points on the board, conceding twice in the closing stages of the match.

Seven days later, the Academy graduate was withdrawn at half-time in the Highlands, then was ineligible to be included in the matchday squad for Ayr’s Scottish Cup Round Three matchup with Peterhead.

Despite Chalmers’ absence, Lee Bullen’s side progressed after a tense period of extra time at Balmoor and are set to take on Kelty Hearts in the Fourth Round.

Closing in on 1,000 minutes in all competitions this season, he has started every league match since his switch south.

In the upcoming weeks, Ayr take on both title challengers, ourselves and Raith Rovers, with the on-loan wide-man having been unable to play in the former.

LEWIS O’DONNELL Lewis O’Donnell is one of just 12 players in the entirety of the third tier yet to miss a league match this season.

Thriving at New Central Park on the left of a midfield quadrant, the 18-year-old is a crucial cog in the Kelty wheel which has powered them into the play-off places, as the Maroon Machine eye a spot in the Championship for the first time in their history. Should that feat be achieved, it would mark their third promotion in just four seasons.

O’Donnell was named in the XI for league fixtures against Annan Athletic, fellow promotion hopefuls Cove Rangers and Queen of the South, playing a combined 261 minutes of senior football across the three matches.

The midfielder embarks on his last month with Michael Tidser’s men and having faced high-flying Falkirk further tough tests this month at home to Montrose today and promotion-seeking Hamilton Academical next up.

LAYTON BISLAND November saw Layton Bisland reach the milestone of double-figure appearances with League One leaders Falkirk.

An expansive draw at Palmerston at the beginning of the month brought his second consecutive start in the dark blue of the Bairns.

Subsequently, a 22-minute cameo from Bisland at The Falkirk Stadium aided the hosts’ efforts to see out a narrow 2-1 victory over Edinburgh City.

As per the terms of his loan agreement, the full-back was unable to contribute in the SPFL Trust Trophy Quarter Final against the Terrors. However, after a resounding 4-2 win, our first defeat in 17, Bisland will be in the frame to feature in the Last Four of the competition against The New Saints.

Set to spend the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign in Stirlingshire, the 19-year-old was given the green light to appear in the Scottish Cup, climbing from the bench with just under half an hour remaining of Falkirk’s drubbing of Formartine United.

John McGlynn’s men remain perched at the summit of the table, yet to taste defeat in the league this season.

This record puts them three points ahead of nearest challengers Hamilton Academical heading into a jam-packed December in which the sides face off this afternoon in Lanarkshire.

RORY MACLEOD Just three months into a temporary spell with the Loons, Tannadice prodigy Rory MacLeod has almost already surpassed his 2022/23 gametime tally, boasting just shy of 500 League Two minutes.

A 1-1 draw with Clyde in Angus marked his fifth start in light blue, bookended by substitute appearances against table-topping Stenhousemuir and Elgin City respectively.

In his final few weeks at Station Park, United’s youngest-ever player is in line to feature in today’s clash with Dumbarton followed by games against Peterhead and East Fife.

BRYAN MWANGI Bryan Mwangi’s wait for his senior debut is finally over.

The midfielder made his Spartans bow four minutes from time in an eventual 2-3 loss to Stenhousemuir - the capital outfit’s first defeat in eight matches.

CRAIG MOORE The six out on loan last month became seven last week when Craig Moore joined Highland League Brechin City on loan.

The midfielder embarks on his first loan spell in senior football to aid the Hedgemen’s promotion push over the festive period. Moore’s return to Tannadice is pencilled in for 15 January 2024.

THE EARLY DAYS

With the focus on the centenary of the name change from Dundee Hibernian to Dundee United, throughout the season we’ll be looking back at meetings between visiting clubs and the Hibs.

In total, Dundee Hibernian met Raith Rovers on 13 occasions; five of those involved the Kirkcaldy club’s first team, the remainder were played against their A team.

Raith Rovers were founded in 1883 and turned professional nine years later. They were the first Fife club to be admitted to the Scottish League, joining Division Two for season 1902–03. Having finished runners-up in season 1908-09 (there was no automatic promotion at the time) midway through the following season they were at the top of the table and hoping to secure election to Division One. That made them an attractive proposition when Dundee Hibs’ secretary/manager Pat Reilly was seeking opponents for the club to host in challenge matches during the New Year holiday.

Reilly and his committee colleagues were ambitious. They wanted to test their new club against good quality opposition, not least to demonstrate to the wider Scottish football family that the Hibs had arrived on the scene and were capable of not just gaining, but sustaining, a place in the Scottish League.

Two clubs from Division Two, close enough to bring some support of their own, were identified in Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers and both agreed to visit Tannadice over the holiday period.

On Ne’er 1910 the Hibs drew with Brechin City at Tannadice in the Carrie Cup (which would become the club’s first ever trophy later in the season).

Cowdenbeath, then near the foot of Division Two, were the visitors on Monday 3 January and they won a close-fought game with the only goal. The next day, their county rivals Raith Rovers – on paper a tougher proposition as they were leading the table – also provided good competition.

Perhaps Pat Reilly had overestimated the appetite – and the resources – of the football public because the fact that it was the third match at Tannadice in four days in the middle of winter was probably responsible for the disappointing attendance of barely 2000.

However, according to the Courier’s reporter, they were ‘treated to a game full of exciting incidents’.

The Greens certainly gave as good as they got during the first half and were handed a great opportunity to take the lead midway through the half when they were awarded a penalty. Right half James Loney was entrusted with the kick but he lacked both power and accuracy, allowing ‘keeper Jimmy McLuskie to save and the chance was gone.

However, the Hibs did forge ahead in the second half with a powerful shot from winger Archie Downie.

They continued to press, bringing several saves from McLuskie, but there was always the impression that the Rovers were playing within themselves. So it proved, because they raised their game in the final stages and veteran winger Tom Niblo (who had been capped by Scotland when with Aston Villa) used his experience to score the equaliser.

The Kirkcaldy club didn’t manage to hold on to top spot in Division Two, finishing the season as runners-up to Leith Athletic on goal average.

But they had the last laugh because at the Scottish League AGM in June 1910 it was they who were elected to Division One, on the same day that Dundee Hibernian were elected to Division Two.

There were also four league meetings, in which Pat Reilly’s men fared rather better. With Division Two still not re-instated after the end of the war, a new Eastern League was established for season 1919-20. Dundee Hibs were crowned champions at the end of it and their record included home and away victories over Raith Rovers reserves.

Raith Rovers established themselves at the top level and reached the Scottish Cup final in 1913. Division One continued during the First World War but in 1917, together with Aberdeen and Dundee, Rovers were asked to leave due to travel difficulties being experienced by the other clubs.

Two seasons later the clubs met again in the Scottish Alliance, a reserve league for Division One clubs. The Hibs had been admitted after being relegated from Division Two and although it was a season to forget, they did take three of the four points available from their matches with the Kirkcaldy men, with the goal-less draw at Stark’s Park in December 1922 the last ever meeting between the Rovers and the Hibs.

Division Two had been suspended in 1915 and its clubs then competed in regional leagues. For Dundee Hibs that meant the Eastern League, which Rovers joined in 1917. That brought about the first competitive matches at first team level and there were four of them, as clubs played each other twice home and away. Not surprisingly, Rovers had the better of those encounters, winning their home games 3-0 and 5-2, while both games at Tannadice, as in 1910, ended 1-1.

The other meetings between the clubs involved the Raith Rovers A team and four were in local cup competitions between 1920 and 1922 in which the Hibs managed to avoid defeat only once.

16 DECEMBER 1911 - DUNDEE UTD 2-2 AYR UTD | LEAGUE (DIVISION TWO) Though only holding the visitors to a draw, Hibs took a lot of kudos from this result because it put a spoke in the wheels of league leaders Ayr’s formidable record and also avenged the 6-0 hammering suffered a few weeks previously at Somerset Park. Emergency centre forward, Bob Craig was the home hero, scoring both Hibs counters. All the goals came in the first half though the visitors dominated the second period, Hibs held on to claim a highly meritorious point.

1950 - ALLOA ATHLETIC 1-2 DUNDEE UTD | LEAGUE (B DIVISION) United chalked up a sixth consecutive win at Recreation Park and they had keeper Bob Wylie to thank, especially in the first half.

Ironically, however, United led thanks to a George Grant goal after 37 minutes. And three minutes into the second period, Peter McKay scored a second. Wilson pulled one back for the Wasps 17 minutes from the end and only two more moments of Wylie wizardry near the end enabled Wille McFadyen’s men to edge home.

1961 - ABERDEEN 1-3 DUNDEE UTD | LEAGUE (DIVISION ONE) Eric Brodie shows his appreciation of Neilly Mochan’s fifth-minute opener at Pittodrie. Keeper ‘Tubby’ Ogston, meanwhile, lies helpless on the ground after failing to hold Neilly’s strike.

Jerry Kerr’s side extended their unbeaten record against the Dons since promotion to five matches with a well-deserved 3-1 win at Pittodrie. After Mochan’s early strike, Wattiee Carlyle doubled the lead, netting from close in on 37 minutes as United dictated proceedings. Mochan added the third 12 minutes into the second half and Hugh Baird beat Alex Brown for a consolation counter, eight minutes from time.
