Good afternoon and welcome to Tannadice!
It’s still obviously early days but it’s nice to be back at the top of the league. We tend not to get too carried away with how the table looks but it’s a decent place to be after a great start.
DEFENSIVELY WE’VE BEEN SOLID AND WE’RE A THREAT GOING FORWARD - WE WANT TO MAKE IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT FOR TEAMS TO COME AWAY WITH ANY POINTS WHEN PLAYING AGAINST US. THE PLAYERS ARE TAKING GREAT PRIDE IN THE UNBEATEN RUN - IT’S CERTAINLY NOT EASY AND DOESN’T HAPPEN BY CHANCE. THERE’S A LOT OF GOOD WORK HAPPENING AT THE TRAINING CENTRE AND IT’S A REAL COLLECTIVE EFFORT TO BE WHERE WE ARE NOW.
We’ve only conceded two league goals, which gives us great confidence and winning seven out of our last nine shows our consistency has been crucial.
We’re looking healthy heading into this afternoon’s match. Ross Docherty and Craig Sibbald both played significant minutes last weekend, which stands them in good stead. Louis Moult obviously picked up a bit of a groin strain but I think we’ve caught it early enough for it not to be a long-term issue.
I thought we were good last weekend and arguably could have had another couple of goals. Archie was unlucky with his first-half effort and I think we created several goal-scoring chances in the second half. In the last two weeks, we’ve shown real character and resilience to come away with points when down to ten men.
I think Queen’s Park will be aiming for a reaction this afternoon following their heavy defeat last weekend. We’re expecting a difficult game, perhaps similar to the Airdrie match in terms of the opposition looking to build from the back. They look a really entertaining team with some pace at the top end of the pitch but are also very comfortable on the ball. Our shape out of possession will be key but we have to go out there and be on the front foot.
I hope you all enjoy the game!

the skipper
Hi everyone and welcome back to Tannadice for our league match against Queen’s Park. It’s been a couple of weeks since we’ve been here. We played Morton in what was a pretty frustrating afternoon for us. We started very well and bossed a lot of the game but let them back into it and they grabbed an equaliser. Even after we went down to ten men, the Manager altered the shape and gave us the ascendancy in the game again and another day we could’ve grabbed a winner. It wasn’t to be but it was another game which kept us undefeated.
Last week we travelled up to Inverness on the Friday and stayed the night, which is always great as it gives us a chance to get together and have a bit of team bonding. The match itself was a difficult one against a good opponent, where we again ended up down to ten men. It was great to be back out on the pitch and get about eighty minutes under my belt after coming back from injury.
IT WAS EVEN BETTER THOUGH, SEEING MY REPLACEMENT MOCHS COMING ON AND GRABBING THAT WINNER IN THE LAST MINUTE. A FEW OF US PLAYERS, STAFF AND FANS WERE ALL OUT WITH OUR CELEBRATIONS WHEN IT WENT IN BUT I SUPPOSE THAT’S WHY WE LOVE THIS GAME. THE SCENES BEHIND THE GOAL WERE INCREDIBLE AND IT WAS AMAZING TO SEND A BRILLIANT TRAVELLING SUPPORT BACK DOWN THE ROAD BUZZING.
We know today’s game will be a tough one against a Queen’s Park side who like to try and play an open style of football. It’s a style we like to try and play also so I think it’ll make for a good game. Hopefully, we can get the three points and come 5pm we’re still at the top of the table.
All the best and enjoy the game, DOC.

the visitors
After 152 years of holding amateur status, Queens Park turned professional in 2019 and the whirlwind journey that they have been on since took them within 90 minutes of Premiership football last term.
A final-day defeat to Dundee, followed by a heavy aggregate loss to Partick Thistle in the play-offs, denied The Spiders top-flight football for the first time since 1958.
Coincidentally, that relegation in the late fifties saw them meet United in the old Division Two the following season - the last time the men from Hampden recorded a competitive victory over us.
Any hangover from last term’s disappointment appeared to be left behind in a poor ViaPlay Cup campaign as they kicked off this Championship season in style by winning their first three matches over ICT and Arbroath (twice).
However, successive defeats to Partick, Raith Rovers, Dunfermline and Ayr United means that Queen’s arrive at Tannadice this afternoon sitting in seventh place.
summer signings
Whilst Ruari Paton may have been the most eye-catching of The Spiders’ summer transfer business, Director of Football Marijn Beaker brought six other new faces to the club during the summer.
Jack Turner spent 11 years at Southampton prior to his summer move north. The defensive midfielder possesses real creativity on the ball and featured last season for Braintree in the National League South. With two goals in his last four matches, the 20-year-old is shaping into the complete midfielder.
Will Tizzard is another capture from Southampton. The 20-year-old centre half, who featured for the Saints U18 and B teams sides, saw red against Raith Rovers earlier this month and will be suspended for today’s match.
Ball-playing midfielder Jack Spong is another recruit from England. The 21-year-old made his Brighton debut in 2019 under Graham Potter and featured a handful of times for Crawley Town in League Two last term.
Versatile and pacy forward Rocco Hickey-Fugaccia signed a two-year deal and is seen as one for the future. The 18-year-old has previously been on the books of both Hamilton and Livingston, featuring in two Challenge Cup matches for the Lions.
Right back Ben McPherson has made the season-long switch from Celtic. The 19-year-old featured during his parent club’s pre-season tour this summer and, after playing Lowland League football for Celtic B last term, will continue his career development at Queens.
Barry Hepburn is another who was brought in on loan for the season. The 19-year-old winger played four times for Bayern Munich II in the fourth tier of German football last term. The U19 Scottish international joined the Bundesliga giants from Celtic in 2020 and is under contract until 2025.
THE MANAGER
ROBIN VELDMAN
The appointment of the Dutchman as Head Coach came out of the blue, but it is an ambitious change of direction by the club. Formerly a youth coach at both Ajax and Anderlecht, the 37-year-old had a spell as interim boss at the Belgians last term.
Upon signing a three-year deal in the summer the Marknesse-born coach, who cut his coaching teeth in the Heerenveen youth set-up, got straight to work on transforming Queens into a 4-3-3 attack-minded side who like to get the ball down and play an expansive passing game.
Assisted by countryman, Paul Nuijten, it’s clear from the club’s signings and team selections this season that youth will be given an opportunity as Queens strive to confirm their status as a Championship club.
Brought through the youth ranks at Hibernian, the Dubliner joined East Kilbride following his release in 2019. An unspectacular return to the senior ranks with Stranraer soon followed but it was his move to Palmerston that saw Paton show himself as one of the lower leagues rising stars.
A modest eight goals in his first season hinted at his potential, but last season saw the right-footed striker hit the net 25 times for Queen of the South. That form saw him named in the League One Team of the Year as well as tie for the division’s top scorer award.
An energetic forward with an eye for the spectacular, particularly from long-range free kicks, Ruari had several clubs interested in the summer but chose to sign a three-year deal with Queens Park.
ONE TO WATCH
RUARI PATON
It took just three matches for the 23-year-old to endear himself to his new fans by bagging four in a ViaPlay Cup tie against Elgin City. Twelve games into the season and the striker has already scored nine times, with his four league counters seeing him currently the joint top scorer in the division.

PLAYED FOR BOTH
barry douglas
A left-back who was signed from Queen’s Park and, though his Tannadice tenure spanned just three years, he won a League Championship medal and played for Scotland.
Does that ring a bell?
It may sound as if we are featuring Andy Robertson who qualifies on all three counts, but instead, it is Barry Douglas who has also enjoyed an extraordinary and successful career after his spell with United.
Barry was a youth player with Livingston Boys Club for several years before joining Queen’s Park. He finished his youth development with the Spiders and made his debut in 2008, playing two full seasons before joining United in 2010. In his second season at the Hampden club, he was their top scorer from the left-back position. Indeed, he scored 11 times from 76 appearances – none of which were as a sub.
Although brought to United as one for the future, he was used off-and-on up and down the left side of Peter Houston’s first team during his first season, but a combination of injury and a family bereavement restricted his playing time in his second term.
However, in what turned out to be his final campaign, Paul Dixon’s departure ensured he was a first-team regular.
Ironically, he made the same number of appearances in Tangerine as he did in Queen’s black and white hoops –though 14 of his 76 outings were from the bench.
Whilst he only scored four goals, his many assists came from his trusty left foot - and being a dead-ball specialist, he was equally at home as a full-back or wing-back.
Out of contract with United, he ventured abroad by agreeing on a pre-contract with Polish side Lech Poznań on May 28th, 2013. In foreign climes, his career blossomed further, playing 27 times as Lech won the
Polish League Championship in 2014-15. That brought further European experience having figured for United against Slask Wroclaw and Dinamo Moscow.
Having made 75 appearances and scored five goals for the Polish side, he signed for Turkish Süper Lig team Konyaspor in January 2016. And more silverware followed being a member of the side that won the 2017 Turkish Cup after defeating Istanbul Başakşehir on penalties.
Whilst with the Turkish side, he played 45 times in all competitions during his spell, including four games in the 2016–17 UEFA Europa League.
In July 2017, he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers and was the EFL Championship Player of The Month award for November 2017 and the trophy collection grew, picking up a winner’s medal during the Championship as Wolves won the title, contributing five goals and 14 assists from the left back position. His tally of assists also saw him finish joint-top (with Robert Snodgrass) of the relevant charts in the EFL Championship.
The following summer, he was the subject of a £3 million move to Championship side Leeds United and again earned another dong as the Elland Road finished top in his second term with the Yorkshire side finishing as Championship Champions after the successful resumption of the Covid-19 interrupted 2019-20 season.
In October 2020, he was loaned to Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season when he was released by Leeds.
Just two years ago, he made an emotional return was back to Poland and Lech Poznań.
As mentioned at the outset, Barry did earn one and only cap for his country whilst a Wolves player. He made his international debut on 27 March 2018, coming on as a substitute, ironically for Andy Robertson in a 1–0 win against Hungary.

Not really - like to do everything same as the week before.
What would you be if you weren’t a footballer?
Pro gamer or try to be haha!
Best stadium you’ve played at?
Celtic Park - just the best I’ve played at. The best stadium I’ve been at was the Russian National Stadium but I was on the bench.
Best player you have played with?
Having been lucky enough to play for my country I’ve played with a few top players but seen as he was at the club I’ll say Andy Robertson
Best player you have played against?
Again played against a lot of good players Mitrovic was up there and probably Edouard at Celtic - he was so good!
Who is the best player of all time?
Cristiano Ronaldo - he can do everything and he’s still doing it to this day - it’s all been done through hard work and we have to admire that!
Best game you’ve ever watched?
Celtic vs Porto in Sevilla at the UEFA Cup Final was unreal and so many good players playing. That day was amazing experience going with my dad.
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
Be yourself on the pitch. It’s your career and you only get one so do what you feel is right in the moment
Who is the dressing room joker?
I could say myself but I’ll give it to Tony watt as the boy just doesn’t stop - a great guy to keep the spirits high in changing room!
Who is the best dressed in the United squad?
I’ve yet to see any stand outs - a few boys with nice casual gear Moulty and Sibbald both decent!
Who is the worst dressed in the United squad?
Most boys would say me as I only wear same 6/7 tracksuits every week haha nothing exciting but I’ll say the skipper Doc - his stuff especially his socks are out there but in fairness he can pull it off, but just not for me!
Which one player would you take on a holiday with you?
Defo not Tony Watt as I need at least 24 hours away from him at times lol! This season I’d say Moulty he’s a good guy and his little girls play with my little girl at the games so would make sense for the family.
What do you do in your spare time?
Play the computer bit of an obsession but nothing better to do!

THE EARLY DAYS
With the centenary of the name change from Dundee Hibernian to Dundee United approaching next month, throughout the season we’ll be looking back at meetings between visiting clubs and the Hibs.
The clubs met on three occasions, with the first by far the most significant. Indeed, it was a landmark occasion because it was the first-ever Scottish Cup tie played by Dundee Hibs.
Prior to 1921, only Division One clubs had automatic entry to the Scottish Cup. Those in Division Two had to take their chances with non-League clubs in the Qualifying Cup, with only those who reached the last 16 of that competition earning a place in the ‘big’ cup.
The Hibs had fallen at the first round of the Qualifying Cup in each of the club’s first three seasons, but 1912 brought a change of fortune. Pat Reilly’s team beat Montrose, Forfar Athletic and Broxburn United to reach the last 8, where they lost to Highland League side Caledonian after a replay.
The players and supporters eagerly anticipated who would be the club’s opponents on their Scottish Cup debut. When the draw was made, the venue could not have been more appropriate – Dundee Hibs were heading to Hampden Park to face 10-times winners of the trophy, Queen’s Park.
The club had dominated the competition in its early years – even today, only Celtic and Rangers have won the Scottish Cup more often than Queen’s - but they declined to join the Scottish League when it was introduced in 1890, deciding that it was incompatible with the club’s amateur status.
They relented in 1900 and by the time of the 1913 Scottish Cup meeting Queen’s Park were an established Division One club, while the Hibs were enduring their worst league season and at the time were bottom of Division Two.
That had caused crowds to shrink to just a few hundred for league matches but the Scottish Cup was something special, as evidenced by the fact that special trains carried around 1000 Hibs supporters to Glasgow for the tie.
We can do no better than reproduce in full the match report that appeared in the Athletic News, an English publication that covered most Scottish matches at the time.

Dundee Hibernian played so well against Queen’s Park at Hampden that the local crowd cheered them. The visitors were courage personified, and some of their football was worth going a long way to see. What they lacked, compared to the “Spiders”, was experience. If they came and fell, these Dundee lads also left in high esteem.
After eighteen minutes, Walker opened the Queen’s Park score and the same player got another sometime after with the best shot he had delivered on the ground. He had got the pass from Paul, and it took this latter gentleman only two minutes more to score the third goal himself with a tremendous drive.
Although so far behind as three goals at the interval, the Dundee defence had done itself proud, Welsh and Forbes, the backs, being specially heroic.
Twenty minutes after the restart, Lowe gave Queen’s Park a fourth goal. The “Hibs” were not done with, though victory was now assured for the amateurs. Low took the ball well up and centred so well that Boland was left with an easy score, which he accepted.

Dundee Hibernian
Cameron; Welsh, Forbes; A. McDonald, Govan, Boland; Low, E. MacDonald, Scrimgeour, Linn and Gowans.
Keeping up a swinging style of play, the Hibs attacked again and again and ten minutes from the end Scrimgeour scored a second goal with a fast low shot.
Paul made a capital wing with Forsyth and from them the Dundee team’s goal was often endangered.
The Hibs had players of mettle in Welsh, Forbes, Govan and Low.
As was customary, the Queen’s Park players were given their initials to signify their amateur status. Most were employed in the professions, with the scorer of the third goal against the Hibs the most notable – H.M. (Harry) Paul was a veterinary surgeon who won three full Scotland caps.
It’s clear that the Tannadice men gave a good account of themselves and it was appropriate that Tom Boland scored the club’s first ever Scottish Cup goal – he had been the very first player signed by Dundee Hibs in 1909 and was the only survivor from their first match.
The crowd of 11,000 meant that the Hibs’ share of the gate was £140, a tidy sum then and most welcome given the club’s always precarious finances.
That was the only occasion when Queen’s Park and Dundee Hibernian met at first team level, but the clubs did come into contact again during season 1922-23. However, we won’t dwell on that because it was in the Scottish Alliance, a league for the reserve teams of Division One clubs in which the Greens played after losing their Scottish League place the previous season.
Queen’s Park Strollers won the Hampden meeting 2-1 in September 1922 and the return at Tannadice in April was, literally, a stroll for the Spiders, who came out on top by 3-1.

This was a much more comfortable victory than the score suggests! Hibs dominated the game from start to finish and showcased they were a force to be reckoned with.
Goals from Willie Ouchterlonie and Chic Weir ended a run of five games without defeat in front the 1,200 assembled at Links Park.
Hibs came to Tannadice fresh from a Fairs Cup triumph over Portuguese side Belensenes but were taken to the cleaners by a rampant United side. Jim Irvine scored the only goal of the first half, but Jerry Kerr’s side hit four in a fifteen-minute spell with a Neil Mochan strike sandwiched between a Wattie Carlyle double.
Injury-hit Dundee grabbed a morale-boosting early lead on three minutes. As the half progressed, United had more and more of the game, but failed to make much until two minutes from half-time when Jim Henry rounded two men on the right, and Pat Gardner beat Mike Hewitt with a glancing header from Jim’s perfect cross. United looked the more inventive side after the break, but Jocky Scott almost regained the lead for Dundee with a header which skimmed the post. Tommy Traynor brought out the save of the match from Mike Hewitt as the game swung from end to end, and almost emulated it when he pushed a Henry shot round the post. The subsequent corner, however, produced the winner. Pat Gardner’s corner was flicked on by Jim Henry to winger, Sandy White who smashed the ball into the net via the underside of the bar. Only seven minutes remained, and in the end, Dundee, after starting brightly, eventually found the handicap of playing without three top forwards too big a handicap to overcome.
1995 - DUNDEE 2-3 DUNDEE UTD | LEAGUE (FIRST DIVISION)
The feature of this pulsating derby was a Billy McKinlay hat-trick in what was to be his last game for the club before a big-money move to Blackburn Rovers. The midfielder opened the scoring from an eighth-minute penalty. That was cancelled out by Jim Hamilton scoring in like manner for the Dark Blues. Two second-half strikes by ‘Badger’ put United two up and though Hammy quickly pulled one back, United posted yet another Dens Park triumph.
2017
United moved back into second place in the league with a tremendous win over the Championship league leaders. Two raking Fraser Fyvie strikes (pictured), and a Scott MacDonald counter, put United three ahead just before the hour mark. The Pars’ sole response was Callum Smith’s goal 13 minutes from time.

Dundee United extended their unbeaten run to eight competitive matches despite being held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Greenock Morton at Tannadice.
Louis Moult continued his scoring streak as he broke the deadlock on 19 minutes with a well-placed glancing header from a pinpoint Declan Glass delivery. However, former United man Robbie Muirhead was on hand to equalise for the Ton following an uncharacteristically poor defensive mix-up between Jack Walton and Declan Gallacher just before the hour mark.
The Terrors’ woes went from bad to worse soon after, with Ghanain livewire Mathew Cudjoe being dismissed by Referee David Munro for alleged violent conduct towards Calum Waters.
Despite setbacks, United went close to snatching the three points in the dying embers and also would be denied multiple spot-kick shouts for grappling in the area.

3PM Saturday 23 September 2023 | Caledonian Stadium | cinch Championship | Attendance: 3,603 Chris Mochrie’s late, late winner secured all three points for 10-man United.
Archie Meekison came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening 45 as he struck the outside of the upright from 20 yards with Inverness stopper Mark Ridgers beaten all ends up.
Declan Glass and Glenn Middleton also threatened for the visitors, whilst Charlie Gilmour spurned ICT’s most clear-cut chance as he headed over the bar from a menacing Aaron Doran corner.
The first period also saw United lose their talisman, Louis Moult, with a groin injury.
The Terrors’ woes were compounded heading into the final 20 minutes when on-loan Ross County enforcer Jordan Tillson was sent for an early bath having committed two bookable offences within the space of 240 seconds.
However, Jim Goodwin’s side continued to push for the winner they knew would propel them back to the summit of the table, and deep into second-half stoppage time, the relief came.
A Middleton free-kick bounced on the six-yard line before rebounding back off the crossbar, with Declan Gallacher picking up the pieces in a congested penalty area.
The Scotland international kept his composure to tee up Academy graduate Chris Mochrie, who steered home via a deflection off Caley defender Zak Delaney.
