THE GAFFER

Good evening everyone and welcome back to Tannadice!

We come in to this after a strong start to the season and we’re looking to carry on our momentum here at home.

The immediate emotions after the game on Saturday are ones of disappointment because we lost the game and we went up there with a plan to try and bring a positive result back down the road. But I think it’s important to remind ourselves where we’ve come from in terms of promotion from the Championship and the volume of new players that we’ve brought in.

We’re delighted with the position that we’re in at the moment but we can’t take our eye off the ball, we’ve all been in the game long enough to know how quickly things can turn either positively or negatively.

If we start thinking too far ahead and start getting comfortable in this position then things can change very soon, so we have to approach this Motherwell game as the home team, being on the front foot and being positive but at the same time giving Motherwell the utmost respect because I know that they carry a real threat themselves.

We just have to trust in our own process and believe in what we’re trying to doand hopefully off the back of that, we’ll continue to get some positive results.

I hope you all enjoy the game!

IN COMMAND

There was an early chance for David Gray’s side with two minutes on the clock as Chris Cadden fired a waist-high ball across the face of goal - which Kevin Holt duly knocked behind for a corner.

We took the lead against the run of play as the clock struck 20 minutes!

A brilliant driving run from Middleton found him racing clear of Lewis Miller and heading for the byline. A perfectly picked pass to match was then bundled over the line by Sam Dalby under a challenge to put us ahead.

IN ON TERMS

Our lead was short-lived as Hibs hit back just minutes before the break.

All told, it was a simple goal. Newell’s freekick

was headed back across goal and Warren O’Hora nodded home.

HIBS HIT THE FRONT

Dalby was denied a double just after the restart due to an offside in the build up to his brilliant header!

Left unmarked at the back post, second-half substitute Dwight Gayle put the visitors in front on 72 minutes as he nodded home Jordan Obita’s cross.

CHAOS AT THE DEATH

A late second yellow for Newell following a nasty challenge on Stephenson had the Hibs captain heading for an early bath and opened up the game ahead of eight additional minutes.

As the onslaught of United attacks ensued,

Luca Stephenson hit his second goal of the season to restore parity. Second-half substitute Kristijan Trapanovski was at the heart of it, brilliantly beating several Hibs’ bodies and rasping the ball across goal. As it was parried out, our number 17 was on hand to slide the ball home from a matter of yards.

There only ever looked like there would be one winner after that...

Into the final minute of stoppage time, Meshack Ubochioma’s first goal for United struck bedlam at Tannadice.

It was route one stuff as Walton sent a searching ball towards the Hibs area. As it was flicked on by Holt, Bursik came to meet it without any purchase, and Meshack was there to loft the ball over everyone on his weaker right foot and into the net!

NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN

It was a start full of intensity although neither ‘keeper was truly tested in a first-half that seemed to fizzle out.

Threats down our left looked the most likely to cause danger as Will Ferry and Glenn Middleton linked up well while Topi Keskinen posed the most cause for concern in a red shirt with some direct and powerful runs in behind.

A terrific tackle from Kevin Holt on 24 minutes stopped Keskinen creating any further danger as he looked to strike at goal. Just a few minutes after being shown the first yellow card of the evening, Aberdeen’s Ante Palaversa had the first real effort on goal as he fizzed a first-time effort wide of Jack Walton’s left-hand post.

United’s chances came hard to come by as a number of good deliveries were well dealt with by a swarm of Aberdeen shirts.

As we approached one additional minute, a glancing header from Luca Stephenson flew north of the crossbar and Steven McLean drew close on the first 45.

DIGGING IN

There was an onslaught of red attacks as we got back underway.

Half-time substitute Shayden Morris picked up where Keskinen left off, fizzing several balls across the United box in the opening minutes of his Saturday night cameo. Former United man Jamie McGrath then almost broke the deadlock with a fiercely struck low drive that Walton did well to navigate around the post.

LATE HEARTBREAK

A super stop from Walton denied Sokler a before the hosts hit the front with six minutes of normal time remaining

A deep cross found Nicky Devlin at the far post in a tangle with Will Ferry and a ricochet fell into the path of second-half substitute Peter Ambrose to tap in from close range.

The hosts also had a late penalty overturned by VAR for offside in the build-up as Ambrose was brought down inside the area by Ševelj.

We had one final chance to draw parity as Middleton worked a low ball across the box for Ferry, but the Irishman lashed it over the bar and we left empty-handed.

FOCUS ON MOTHERWELL

A disappointing defeat to Dundee at Fir Park last week brought a three-game winning streak to an end and saw The ‘Well slip to fifth place in the table.

With today’s match sandwiched between a league clash with Celtic and a League Cup semi-final with Rangers, our guests will see today’s match as something of a must-win.

Recent fixtures between the clubs have been closely fought with three wins apiece from the previous seven encounters. Motherwell’s last visit here in October 2022 saw them break a five-match winless streak at Tannadice.

As a player, the midfielder represented Queens Park almost 200 times before spending a season with Clyde. The 40-year-old will be known to most for the following five years with Ross County where he won the First Division title as well as the Challenge Cup. A hip injury ended his career at the top level but a two-year stint with Brora Rangers saw him add Highland League and North of Scotland Cup winners medals to his collection.

In 2016 he returned to Dingwall to begin his coaching career with the club’s U20 side before being appointed

as co-manager with Stevie Ferguson in 2018. Kettlewell took sole control two years later but within six months he was sacked with County bottom of the Premiership.

After joining Motherwell as a development coach, he was promoted to Manager in February 2023. Immediately steadying the ship, he lost only two of the remaining fourteen matches and steered the club to seventh place. A disappointing ninth last term has almost been forgotten with the Glaswegian having The ‘Well ensconced in the top half of the table.

ONE TO WATCH

MOSES EBIYE

Despite spending as much time on the bench as in the starting line-up, the Nigerian has four goals to his credit in his first full season at Fir Park. Two goals in six matches last term following his arrival from Norwegian side Aalesund hinted at the potential the 6’1” striker possesses.

After leaving Akwa United in 2017, the target man has been based in Norway, turning out for Lillestrøm, Strømmen, Ham Kam and Tromsø, as well as Aalesund.

With an extra-time winner over Killie in the cup, as well as last-minute goals against St Johnstone and Aberdeen, the pacy and powerful striker is a constant danger until the final whistle.

KOFI BALMER was called into the Northern Ireland squad for their recent Nations League matches. The 24-year-old former Crystal Palace youth has been a standout since breaking into the side last month.

LIAM GORDON has over 250 career appearances under his belt and has been an ever present in the league this term.

ZACH ROBINSON opened the scoring in our recent League Cup quarter-final defeat.

TOM SPARROW signed a twoyear deal after spending time on loan at Chester City last season. The Welsh U21 cap scored his first Motherwell goal

against Hearts in August but has yet to start for The Steelmen.

TAWANDA MASWANHISE

has impressed so much in a short space of time that the attacking midfielder saw his initial three-month deal extended to 2026.

STEVE SEDDON signed a one year deal after being released by Oxford United in the summer.

JAIR TAVARES made his debut against Aberdeen last month after his loan arrival from Hibernian.

APOSTOLOS STAMATELOPOULOS

signed for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal in July.

JACK VALE has returned on loan for the second season.

MARVIN KALETA Kaleta is another who’ll spend the season on loan in Lanarkshire. The Mancunian has featured seven times from the bench thus far.

Other summer incomers were Serbian striker Filip Stuparevic who has been loaned to Morton, experienced midfielder Ross Callachan who has missed most of the season with a hamstring injury and West Ham loanee goalkeeper Krisztian Hegyi who has warmed the bench after making just two League Cup appearances.

SIEB

DIJKSTRA

In every way, Sieb Dijkstra was a larger-than-life character and his colourful and highly individual style of goalkeeping made him a cult hero amongst Motherwell and United fans.

Sieb began his career in his native Holland with Roda JC but did not make an appearance, spending time on loan at AZ and Hasselt.

Tommy McLean was the common denominator in the six years he spent in Scottish football – signing him for Motherwell in August 1991 from Dutch side Hasselt KSC.

A commanding keeper, he soon established himself as a Fir Park favourite notably for his ability to pluck crosses out of the air with ease. In addition, he was a terrific shot-stopper.

It wasn’t all plain sailing initially, finding himself second choice behind Billy Thomson. Certainly, his baptism was one he’ll want to forget as Raith Rovers ousted them from the League Cup as Dijkstra and the side endured a dismal display in the 4-1 defeat to their First Division opponents.

Nevertheless, he bounced back in fine style with a win over Airdrieonians a matter of days later, but then had to wait until the following season before Sieb became first-choice keeper, replacing Ally Maxwell for the next two seasons.

After 87 appearances and having just helped the Steelmen to a third-place finish and qualify for Europe, he left the club on the eve of Alex McLeish’s arrival at Fir Park in July 1994.

QPR, then managed by Gerry Francis, paid £350,000 for him, only for Francis to move to Spurs shortly afterwards.

However, life at Loftus Road wasn’t all too enjoyable as appearances for the

Loftus Road side were limited to 11 before new manager Ray Wilkins farmed him out on loan to Bristol City and Wycombe Wanderers.

The parallels between his Tannadice stint and his Fir Park experiences were unbelievably similar.

Costing £100,000 in December 1996, it was again Tommy McLean who signed him as had been the case at Motherwell, he was again replacing Ally Maxwell and was equally appreciated by the fans.

His second spell in Scotland was further mirrored by him helping his side to a third-place and European qualification in season 1996-97. He also picked up silverware with a Scottish League Cup runners-up medal later in 1997.

Although he slightly less time with United than at Motherwell, he made more appearances to a total of 113 in which he kept 34 clean sheets – standing eighth in the all-time list.

After a contract dispute, Dijkstra left Tannadice in 1999 and returned to the Netherlands to play for amateur side VV Sittard (via a week’s spell with Ipswich Town), although he would end the season with RBC Roosendaal as a replacement for injured Belgian goalkeeper Jurgen Belpaire.

Another year with RBC followed before a final playing spell with German Verbandsliga side Germania Teveren.

Now back in The Netherlands, since hanging up his gloves, he has continued his passion for the game in a coaching capacity.

FLASHBACK FOCUS

1993

UNITED 2-0 ST JOHNSTONE | LEAGUE

In addition to the absence of so many experienced players, Maurice Malpas’ late call-off due to flu further complicated team selection.

Craig Brewster stepped in for the absent skipper in manager Ivan Golac’s only change from the side defeated at Pittodrie. And Craig was very

much involved in the early stages just failing to connect properly with an Andy McLaren cross and then turning on a Christian Dailly pass and shooting narrowly wide within the first three minutes.

Saints almost got their noses in front after only four minutes when former United midfielder Harry Curran sent in a curling 25-yarder which captain for the day Alan Main was at full stretch to tip over.

There were narrow escapes at both ends immediately on the resumption. A lightning run and cross by John Clark down the right found John O’Neil, but his clip from the near post frustratingly strayed past the far post. Instantly at the other end, Torfason smashed a 20-yarder off the base of the post.

Eight minutes later United took the lead when McLaren pushed the ball into Brewster’s path and, though the ball bubbled up, his shot from 20 yards

sailed past Rhodes into the top right-hand corner.

Saints took a while to threaten, but when they did it was a vengeance and left everyone in bewilderment that they did not score!

Curran crossed from the left which Davies headed for goal, but Main touched it onto the bar and Davies inexplicably hit the crossbar from the rebound from only a couple of yards out with the goal at his mercy. The ball was eventually scrambled away and Main even prevented a corner!

The visitors paid for their profligacy in front of goal five minutes later when Billy McKinlay dispossessed Gary McGinnis on the edge of the box and struck an angled drive past Rhodes to end the match as a contest.

1920

KING’S PARK 0-0 DUNDEE HIBS | LEAGUE

With defences on top, this Central Park clash was a pretty turgid affair. It was only in the last 15 minutes that Hibs came to life, but despite incessant pressure, there was a distinct lack of a cutting edge in the Greens attack.

1948

COWDENBEATH 2-3 UNITED | LEAGUE

The proverbial game of two halves as United deservedly struck three times in the first half, but a plucky late fightback almost brought the Fifers a hitherto very unlikely point. Peter McKay netted the opener in the first minute and scored his second after 25 minutes with a Frank Quinn counter on 11 minutes, putting Willie McFadyen’s men in a strong position. However, two goals in three minutes from David Shankland and Sam Shields meant a nervy last eleven minutes and only strong last-minute appeals for a penalty being turned down secured the Tannadice side both points.

1965

UNITED 4-2 MORTON | LEAGUE

It was Scandinavian Day at Tannadice with five Danes, two Swedes and a Norwegian on view and that helped serve up a cracking contest - despite the visitors playing more than half the game with only ten men after Bobby Campbell was stretchered off.

Indeed, that was a double whammy as Frannie Munro had already put United ahead. Finn Døssing doubled the lead six minutes into the second half with Allan McGraw reducing the leeway three minutes later. A mazy run and cool finish by Lennart Wing restored United’s two goal advantage after 74 minutes, only for Morris Stevenson to give the Greenock side hope of scoring with seven minutes left. But that was killed off when Munro notched his second with three minutes left.

1982

UNITED 1-0 DUNDEE | LEAGUE

United, just a point behind leader Celtic, secured a vital win in the first Dundee derby of the season without injured stars Paul Sturrock and Eamonn Bannon. Dundee aimed for their first victory “across the road” in seven years and held their own in a balanced first half. However, the second half tilted in United’s favor. With just five minutes remaining, substitute John Reilly made a key contribution, firing a shot that Dee keeper Colin Kelly couldn’t hold. Davie Dodds capitalized, scoring the winner in the 84th minute.

2010

UNITED 1 HIBS 0 | LEAGUE

Facing a poor run of form, manager Peter Houston urged United to grind out a result, and they did just that. Dusan Pernis’s penalty save proved crucial, while John Rankin converted a penalty in the second half. David Goodwillie secured the win late in the game, assisted by returning Danny Swanson, who delivered a perfect pass. With just five minutes left, Goodwillie poked the ball past the advancing goalkeeper into the empty net.

Frannie Munro fires home his second goal and United’s fourth 59 years ago.
