the gaffer Happy New Year Everyone, and welcome back to Tannadice! It was a good performance at Arbroath and another important win but the disappointment was Declan Gallagher and Scott McMann both limping off. We’ve got some important players missing today but there are opportunities for other members of the squad to step in. There are plenty of other managers out there with similar problems to ourselves at the moment. We just have to mix things up a little bit and get a strong team on the park to do the job this afternoon. Of course, we’ve entered the transfer window and we want to try and make sure we’re stronger coming out the other side of it. We’re in a position to do some business if the right players become available and I would expect us to have one or two new faces in by the end of the month. It’s good for the squad when these new players come in to freshen things up and enhance competition for places. Concerning our opposition today, I’m delighted for Dougie Imrie, an ex-teammate of mine, as his group were maybe under a little bit of pressure a few weeks ago. They’re now unbeaten in six in the league with four wins and a couple of draws. Morton are a very well-organised team with a lot of experienced players within the ranks, some of whom I’ve worked with in the past. We know what we are going to be up against and we will have to win all of our individual battles.

bidding farewell Following our last home fixture versus Partick Thistle, the club said goodbye to long-standing Lounge Host, Colin Kiddie. Colin spent over three decades at Tannadice, and will be a familiar face to visitors of our Directors’ Lounge/ Boardroom over the years. Upon leaving, Colin said: “I spent the best part of 34 years at tannadice, and in my time I met and worked alongside some amazing people. There’s been a lot of characters over the years and I have some great memories to take with me. I’d like to thank everyone who I crossed paths or worked with during my time at United. It’s a team game for sure!” Everyone at Dundee United would like to thank Colin for his efforts and wish him all the best in his retirement.

Morton become the first side to visit Tannadice twice on league duty this term having left with a creditable 1-1 draw when we met back in September. Louis Moult and Robbie Muirhead scored the goals that afternoon which saw the points deservedly shared as United saw out the final twenty-seven minutes with ten men following Mathew Cudjoe’s red card. Since then, the Cappielow outfit have recovered from their poor start to the season and currently sit sixth in the Championship table, just two points from play-off spots. Their recent form is nothing short of sensational, with a current seven-match unbeaten streak also seeing them keep clean sheets in each of their last four matches. Since their penalty shoot-out defeat in the Challenge Cup to Airdrie back in mid-November, our guests have defeated Bo’ness to progress in the Scottish Cup as well as recording victories over Arbroath, ICT, Queen’s Park and Ayr United. However, with just one win from their previous twenty-eight visits here, it’s fair to say that Tannadice isn’t one of Morton’s favourite away days. Indeed, our guests have failed to even score in half of those matches and suffered 5-0 (twice), 6-0 (twice) and 7-0 defeats.

The 40-year-old former ‘Ton player completed three years in charge at Cappielow last month. A huge fans’ favourite during his solitary season at the club as a player, his return as manager reinvigorated a disconnected fan base and saw the club’s fortunes on the park improve dramatically. Fondly remembered for his winner as Morton humbled Celtic at Parkhead in a League Cup third-round tie in 2013, his popularity continues to grow as Morton sit within touching distance of the promotion play-off places. A UEFA A licence holder, the former Lanark United, Clyde, ICT, Hamilton Accies and St Mirren striker has also completed a Diploma in Applied Football Management as well as his Elite Youth A and B licenses. Last Saturday’s thumping victory over Ayr United saw Imrie oversee his 90th match as a manager. And that victory sees him sitting with a very respectable win rate of 41% in his first managerial position.

ROBBIE MUIRHEAD
The 22-year-old goalkeeper had featured only in cup competitions, and as a half-time substitute in Morton’s league visit to Tannadice earlier in the season, until he was handed the gloves for the Championship visit to Gayfield last month. Since then, he has conceded just twice in six matches, keeping four clean sheets and saving a penalty in a 1-0 win over Queen’s Park.
A last-gasp signing in an attempt to replace Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven’s sales to Celtic in January 2015, the Irvine-born striker was always going to struggle at Tannadice with such boots to fill. Just two goals, albeit both top-drawer finishes against Aberdeen and ICT, from sixteen matches saw him loaned to Partick Thistle. His return to United from Firhill saw him fail to dislodge the misfiring Billy McKay from the starting line-up and he was released from his contract early.
A Celtic youth graduate, he spent time on loan at both Cove and the aforementioned Queen’s Park, but thigh injuries interrupted both spells before he was eventually released from Parkhead and signed for Clyde on a short-term deal. A free agent last summer, he signed a one-year contract with Morton.
After leaving United, Muirhead went on to represent Hearts, MK Dons and Dunfermline en route to Cappielow. With goal returns of one, five, nine and twelve from his first four seasons in Inverclyde, this term’s current tally of 13 sees him continue his upward trajectory with The ‘Ton.
Capped at both U17 and U19 levels by Scotland, as well as featuring in the UEFA Europa Youth League, his impressive form has seen him keep the vastly experienced Jamie MacDonald on the sidelines.
Last weekend saw the frontman record his second hat-trick of the season, with the treble over Ayr United matching his October effort against Kelty Hearts in the Challenge Cup.

Alec Brown’s career in the Senior ranks was relatively short-lived, especially given he was a goalkeeper who enjoyed more than a little success with both United and Morton - his only professional clubs.
January as United went down to a 2-1 defeat at Tynecastle. But as it turned out both had played their last games for the club as the pair were released at the end of the season, Alex having totalled 90 games during his four years.
A Fifer, Alex was signed by Manager Tommy Gray when joining United from Lochgelly Albert in September 1968. His first two appearances were as a trialist – the first of which was in a 1-0 defeat away to Brechin on 10 September – putting pen to paper a couple of weeks later.
Signing for Morton the following summer proved a terrific move as Hal Stewart’s ‘Ton were on the rise. In an impressive first season, he only missed a handful of games as the Cappielow club just fell short of gaining promotion.
He remained first choice until December before giving way to Bill Lucas who had been the regular number one the previous season and left Brown with only a watching brief for the next three months. However, he was but was back between the sticks towards the end of the season.
The following season, the Greenock side reached the League Cup final after ousting Hibs in the semis. Alex was a member of the side that lost out to Rangers in the final and was part of the side that cantered to the Second Division title, losing only once.
With Lucas released, Alec was first choice for virtually the whole of season 1959-60, missing only a couple of games. And, with a string of excellent performances, he played his part in helping the club gain promotion to the First Division after 32 years in the doldrums.
However, after being first choice in the first half of the season, he lost his place and was released at the end of the season having figured in 61 games, taking his Senior tally to 151 appearances.
However, the arrival of Lando Ugolini from Wrexham meant he played understudy to the veteran, restricting him to just seven first-team games. The following season, the custodian duties were much more evenly shared with Alec playing three more games than his counterpart. His final appearance came in

thrice trounced Tony Watt was undoubtedly the outstanding candidate for the Player of the Match award after hitting a hat-trick to down Partick Thistle in our last home game. His on-field exploits meant he celebrated his 30th birthday in some style, much to the delight of all his family and friends who attended the match. Just seven minutes in he scored the opener, slamming home a loose ball from ten yards, The second followed a slide rule pass from Chris Mochrie that found Watt in a pocket of space in behind the Thistle defence. Some neat stepovers opened up an opportunity for a shot and he fired low into the corner from the edge of the area just five minutes from time! The icing on the birthday cake came a minute from time, his bullet header putting the finishing touches to Glenn Middleton’s in-swing cross. The treble brought his tally for the season up to eight, thereby bringing him level with Kevin Holt who, of course, also hit a hat-trick against Partick Thistle. And that has become something of a regular occurrence, given that Lawrence Shankland had been the previous United player to do likewise – his treble also coming against Thistle in a 4-1 win at Firhill in January 2020. In addition to Shankland, there are two other instances of the men from Firhill suffering a similar fate in the last decade. Working backwards, Cammy Smith scored all three goals in a 3-1 League Cup win at Tannadice on Aug 9th, 2016 and David Goodwillie bagged three, again in the League Cup, in a 4-1 win at Firhill in September 2013.

THE EARLY DAYS
With the centenary of the name change from Dundee Hibernian to Dundee United having taken place in October, throughout the first half of the season we’ve looked back at matches between visiting clubs and the Hibs. For the second half, we’re highlighting the first-ever meetings of our Championship rivals with United. Within two years of the name change, Manager Jimmy Brownlie had transformed the club. Season 1923-24 – his first at Tannadice - saw Dundee United achieve more than almost anyone inside or outside the club could have expected, with a solid mid-table finish in Division Two demonstrating that Brownlie had quickly made his presence felt. But what happened the following season was truly astonishing. United were top of the table at the end of January and never relinquished it, finishing two points clear as champions. So, just two years after returning to the Scottish League, United had won a place among the elite in Division One. Among the clubs that awaited them there was Morton (Greenock was not officially added to their title until 1994). They had been in Division One since 1900 and had become established at the top level, also winning the Scottish Cup in 1922. Brownlie appreciated that most of the players who had achieved Division One status for the club would not be capable of sustaining it, so only three of those men began season 1925-26. A total of nine new players were signed and prior to the arrival of Morton, United were 17th out of 20 in the league table, having won just three of their first twelve matches. Providing some encouragement, though, was the fact that one of those victories was against Celtic, who would end the season as champions. The Greenock side lay only four places higher, so Brownlie’s men would not have lacked
confidence for the first ever meeting between United and Morton, at Tannadice on 31 October 1925. It was very much a game of two halves, with neither team able to create much in the way of goalscoring chances in the first period. That was not the case after half-time, however, as Morton immediately forced the United defence onto the back foot, with Jimmy Gourlay – whose goal had won the Scottish Cup for the Cappielow club three years before – twice bringing smart saves from ‘keeper Bill Paterson. That early pressure soon bore fruit, with Morton’s leading scorer George French putting the visitors ahead in the 50th minute. They might have extended their lead on more than one occasion but United showed grit and determination to get back into the game. With 70 minutes on the clock captain Jimmy Walker picked a good time to score his first goal for the club and from that point it was end-to-end as both teams chased a winner. Morton seemed have gained the initiative when wing-half Jock Buchanan scored from the edge of the penalty area but this United team refused to lie down. Six minutes later the scores were level again when another Jock McDonald, United’s left winger, was on hand to touch home a ball that was allowed to reach him across the face of the goal. A draw was a fair reflection on the 90 minutes and no doubt the 10,000 crowd felt they had got their money’s worth. The teams that day were: United - Bill Paterson; Jock Kay, Hugh McBride; Jimmy Walker, Dave Walker, Bobby Bauld; Tommy Simpson, Micky Campbell, Willie Welsh, Andrew Finlay, Jock McDonald. Morton – Archie Fotheringham; John Kelso, Bob Orr; George Hunter, Willie Hyslop, James Jessiman; George French, Jimmy Frizzel, Jock Buchanan, Jimmy Gourlay, Charlie McCartney. Manager, Bob Cochrane
Three months later the clubs met at Cappielow in the return fixture, Morton coming out on top 3-1. The end of the season saw United safe in seventeenth place, two behind the men from Greenock. However, the following season saw both clubs relegated and they spent the next two years in Division Two before returning to Division One together in 1929, with United champions by a single point!

Morton defender David Weir and goalie Alex Wilson thwarted Johnny Hart (V jersey) on this occasion, but the United man was a scorer as his team won this Division One match 3-1 at Tannadice in August 1929. The clubs had been promoted together the previous season.
COULD HAVE BEEN...
We have never previously played Morton on 6 January – though we should have! The sides were scheduled to meet in the Premier Division at Tannadice on this day in 1979, but the game was postponed due to the extreme winter weather. Indeed, United were able to play just one league match between 23 December and 10 February. In all, we have contested January league matches with Morton on 13 occasions between 1926 and 2020. Five of those were on Ne-er Day, despite Cappielow and Tannadice being more than 100 miles apart. The concept of scheduling derby matches for the New Year fixtures had not been thought of a century ago and in four successive seasons during the 1930s United either hosted or visited Morton on the first of January. That said, in those days not only did the trains run on Ne-er Day they were relatively cheaper, more frequent and much more reliable than they are today!

primary school kit competition Dundee United FC, Dundee United Community Trust and Errea have joined forces to empower creativity and community spirit among the youth of Dundee! We invited all 36 Primary Schools to participate in a kit design competition, which has gained enthusiastic support from schools across the city. Each school conducted an internal competition to identify their outstanding submissions, with the finalists selected below. The winning design will be brought to life by our kit manufacturer Errea and used by the triumphant school, whilst also being presented at a DUFC match this season! 6 JANUARY 1912 - DUNDEE HIBS 1-0 EAST STIRLING | LEAGUE (DIVISION TWO) Dan Gibson’s goal and two missed penalties were the highlights of an otherwise forgettable 90 minutes on a frosty Tannadice pitch. Hibs failed to take an earlier advantage as James Izatt’s twice-taken spot-kick was saved on both occasions by ‘Shire keeper Bernard. However, against the run of play, Gibson headed Pat Reilly’s men in front early in the second half and only a fine performance by home keeper Jim Crumley earned Hibs a win.
1934 - DUNDEE UTD 4-1 ST BERNARD’S | LEAGUE (DIVISION TWO) With two goals Bobby Gardiner was the Man of the Match.
With the counter-attraction of Dundee and Falkirk across the road, just 500 turned up at Tannadice to witness Willie Reid’s troops register what was to be their only win in a lean spell. Nevertheless, the home side had to come from behind after Saints left-winger Campbell had given the visitors the lead on 28 minutes. However, John Brown levelled from a penalty three minutes later before Bobby Gardiner gave United the lead after 38 minutes. The inside man was again on target in the second half after George Ross had added a third.
1951 - DUNDEE UTD 6-0 STENHOUSEMUIR | LEAGUE (B DIVISION) Having had their nine-match winning streak ended by a 2-0 defeat at Kilmarnock, Willie McFadyen’s charges bounced back in style hitting the Warriors for six without reply. The 12,000-crowd roared in as United ran in six goals with three players bagging braces. The scoring sequence was as follows: George Cruickshank (14) Frank Quinn (40), George Cruickshank (42), Peter McKay (51), Peter McKay (62), Frank Quinn (72).
1987 - DUNDEE UTD 2-0 ST MIRREN | LEAGUE (PREMIER DIVISION) The first outing of 1987 brought two points, but it was hardly a vintage performance. An indifferent display for over an hour, culminated in two superb strikes at goal. To be honest, Saints had the better chances in the first half with Billy Thomson making at least three excellent saves. At the other end, Campbell Money’s only call to action came when he tipped a curling shot from Billy Kirkwood round the post in the third minute. The breakthrough came after 72 minutes Ian Redford’s in-swinging freekick beat Money as it found the top right-hand corner. This settled the side and after several more chances were created, Paul Sturrock fired in a 25-yarder which left Money helpless.
1990 - HIBERNIAN 0-0 DUNDEE UTD | LEAGUE (PREMIER DIVISION) Andy Goram proved to be our stumbling block. Having kept us at bay for so long, it took the combined efforts of the Hibs ‘keeper and the woodwork to prevent us from taking a deserved lead through Jim McInally. The danger was eventually cleared when Goram saved from Paddy Connolly. If Goram was Hibs’ top performer, Paddy Connolly was the pick of the men in Tangerine in what was a good performance with the obvious exception of finishing!

Dundee United kicked off 2024 with their third victory of the season over Arbroath.
The deadlock in a closely contested first half was finally broken by Louis Moult just eight minutes before the interval, as the United frontman grabbed his first goal since October. A fabulous team effort involving no fewer than four players in quick succession, Moult was on hand to apply the finishing touch from point-blank range after being teed up by strike-partner Tony Watt. It would take less than 150 seconds after the restart for the Terrors to double their advantage. Turning defence into attack in the blink of an eye once more, Kevin Holt’s raking pass picked out the darting run of Glenn Middleton on the burst into the Arbroath half. Winning a footrace with onrushing Derek Gaston, the 24-year-old sent a perfectly executed dink over the Red Lichties stopper from just inside the area to give his side breathing space. And on the 53-minute mark, Jim Goodwin’s side wrapped up the cinch Championship points thanks to another Moult effort. Kai Fotheringham’s deflected cross from the right took a bounce which deceived Arbroath defender Colin Hamilton, leaving Moult with another simple finish as he nodded home number three. Our number nine is now into double figures for the 2023/24 campaign in all competitions.
