the gaffer
Good afternoon everyone, and welcome back to Tannadice!
The biggest carrot of them all is the challenge to accumulate enough points to win the league. That has always been the main driver, all season. The boys have been very good in the main, although there have been inconsistencies over the campaign. That is only natural in the position we are in.
We are solely focusing on the Inverness game, first and foremost. Inverness are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table and are a good team. Every match we have been involved in with them has been a tight affair.
BUT WE HAVE HAD A POSITIVE REACTION TO A DISAPPOINTING RESULT LAST FRIDAY. THE BOYS ARE ALL IN A GOOD PLACE AND DETERMINED TO PUT THINGS RIGHT.
I’m surprised by the position Inverness find themselves in, particularly their recent form with the quality of player they have in the group. When Duncan came in initially, there was a really positive reaction – a new manager bounce that people talk about. He got that.
But for whatever reason, things haven’t quite gone the way they would have wanted over the last 10 to 12 games. We still have to show them all the respect they deserve.
They are coming to Tannadice and there’s not a great deal of pressure on them, I suppose. People will look at it on paper and expect an easy win for us. But we certainly aren’t approaching it like that.
I hope you all enjoy the game!
- JIM GOODWIN

Dundee United are pleased to announce an extension with our Ticketing Provider, Future Ticketing!
When Future Ticketing and Dundee United initially teamed up five years ago, the ticketing company’s advanced software was seen as crucial to the club achieving our key goal of improving engagement with its fanbase. Since then, Future Ticketing has developed the Digital Ticketing App (DTA), an innovation which placed even more control in the hands of supporters and which has been enthusiastically received by United supporters.
The Future Ticketing DTA employs progressive web technology which ensures supporters have the club app on their phone and are always just a click away from Dundee United.
If you don’t have the app installed, CLICK HERE!
Liam Holton, CEO of Future Ticketing, said: “Forming our original partnership with Dundee United was a milestone achievement and we felt privileged that such a progressive club trusted us to work with them on their digital transformation.”
“Now, as we announce the extension of that partnership for future seasons, we are more confident than ever that our ongoing commitment to providing the best ticketing solutions will benefit Dundee United going forward.”
Chief Operating Officer, Joe Rice, added: “Our partnership with Future Ticketing has been about so much more than the transition to online booking. We thought carefully about our renewal with Future Ticketing and considered how the company’s technology has provided us with opportunities for data collection, thereby enabling us to better identify the needs of our fans.”
“Enhancing and streamlining our supporters’ journey has been at the forefront of our negotiations and we are excited for the next steps in our partnership with Future Ticketing.

the visitors
Last weekend’s home defeat to Ayr United saw our Highland visitors miss the opportunity to lift themselves out of the relegation play-off spot.
With just one win in eight matches, an immediate upturn in form is required if they are to avoid the nerve-jangling end-of-season survival shoot-out.
With a defensive record that is the envy of most Championship clubs, ICT’s problems have come at the top end of the park with only bottom club Arbroath having hit the net less this season.
With Chris Mochrie and Tony Watt grabbing late winners in our brace of 1-0 wins in the Highlands earlier this season, the 1-1 draw here at Tannadice in November is the only time in our last nine meetings that United haven’t run out victorious.
WINTER REINFORCEMENTS
Remi Savage signed on a permanent deal following his release from Newcastle United. The former Liverpool youth spent a decade with the Reds, winning the FA Youth Cup, before signing for The Magpies in a deal that cost them a £250,000 compensation fee in the summer of 2021. The composed defender featured in the Football League Trophy three times this season prior to his move north and scored his first senior goal against Partick last month.

Jeremiah ChilokoaMulllen
Nineteen-year-old central defender
Jeremiah ChilokoaMulllen moved north on a loan deal until the summer. The Scotland u21 cap has been a regular in Leeds United’s u23 side and has featured three times since his arrival at ICT.

James Carragher
Wigan defender James Carragher is another who has joined on loan until the summer. The 21-year-old Liverpudlian made his debut in defeat to United in January and has been a regular since, featuring ten times.
After over three hundred appearances for Dundee, Cammy Kerr found himself surplus to requirements at Dens and jumped at the chance of a loan switch the Highlands. Predominantly a right back, the 28-year-old has featured in midfield recently.
Cammy KerrCapped at youth level by Northern Ireland, Sean McAllister was a regular in Everton’s u23 side prior to his February loan move. A goal scoring midfielder, he has notched twice in six Football League Trophy matches and got himself off the mark in Inverness’ win at Morton. The 21-yearold is a doubt today with a thigh injury and would be a big loss to our visitors.
Another loanee for the rest of the season is Livingston youngster Samson Lawal who

represented Nigeria at the 2023 u20 World Cup, scoring in the group stages. The extremely versatile midfielder/wide man made his Livi debut earlier this season after joining from Katsina United.
Luton striker Aribim Pepple had featured mainly from the bench since his February loan switch. Previously loaned to both Grimsby and Bromley, the 21 year Englishman has represented Canada at under 17 level.
in charge
duncan ferguson
The Stirling-born former striker will always hold a special place in the hearts of United fans of a certain vintage. A no-nonsense, aggressive, born winner, he led the line at United in the early 90s, scoring 35 times in two and a half seasons before earning the club a British transfer fee of £4,000,000.
During his playing career, he lifted the Scottish Premier Division trophy and picked up two Scottish Cup runners-up medals. After moving south, he won the FA Cup with Everton and picked up a further cup runners-up medal whilst at Newcastle United.
After moving into coaching at Goodison, he twice took up the role of interim manager before an ill-fated first foray into a full-time managerial role with Forest Green Rovers in 2023. After just one win from eighteen matches and relegation to League Two, Ferguson was relieved of his duties. He subsequently took up the reins at ICT in September and continues to try to drag them away from the relegation zone.
one to watch
alex samuels
The Welshman was brought in on loan from Highland rivals Ross County in January and hit the ground running by scoring on debut in the Scottish Cup win over BSC Glasgow before racking up a stunning hat-trick a week later to see off Raith Rovers in a 3-2 success.
After beginning his career with Aberystwyth Town, he signed with his boyhood heroes Swansea City as a 16-year-old. Capped at under-18 level, he featured for both Morton and Newport on loan before signing with Stevenage following his release from The Swans. After just one season at The Lamex, the striker moved to Wycombe Wanderers in 2018 and went on to play a role in the club’s 2019/20 promotion via the Wembley play-off final victory over Oxford United.
The hard-working frontman moved to The Staggies at the end of the following season but has struggled to hold down a first-team place and is hoping to lay down a marker during his four months in Inverness.

PLAYED FOR BOTH
darren dods
When Craig Brewster became United’s Player/ Manager in January 2006, Darren Dods, who played under him in the highlands, was one of his targets to enhance the team’s defensive capabilities. However, his efforts proved fruitless as Inverness CT hung on to their highly influential defender.
Instead, it wasn’t until 18 months later that he arrived at Tannadice.
Initially, the Edinburgh-born defender began his career with Hibs where he spent six seasons and was capped at U21 level.
But having made 71 appearances and establishing himself at Easter Road, he was signed by St Johnstone, managed by Paul Sturrock, who paid £70,000 for his services.
It was with Saints that he was to make the greatest number of a career total of 600 plus for St Johnstone before a move north to join ICT when his contract expired in the summer of 2004.
Making an instant impact, he won the Caley Thistle Fans’ Player of the Year award in his first season. For three seasons, he was a lynch-pin in the heart of Thistle’s defence, totalling 110 appearances, and scoring seven times.
In January 2007, it was announced that Darren had signed a pre-contract agreement to join Dundee United the following June despite Craig Brewster having left the United manager position three months earlier. New manager Craig Levein said he was “pleased” regarding Dods’ two-year deal.
On 22 June 2007, Dods formally joined United, signing a two-year contract. In his ninth game in October 2007, he scored his first goal, heading the only goal in a 1–0 home win over Motherwell. That was the first of six he scored with the last one probably the most memorable being the last-minute winner against Celtic

in November 2009 when United came from behind to a Barry Robson penalty after 79 minutes which was cancelled out by Jon Daly’s equalised four minutes later.
Another of his strikes was in the 4-1 defeat of Aberdeen at Tynecastle as United reached the 2008 League Cup final.
But it wasn’t enough to earn him a place in the starting eleven for the final, so it was only as an unused substitute that he collected a runner-up medal following the 3-2 defeat to Rangers.
During his Tannadice stint, he formed an impressive defensive wall, partnering the likes of Garry Kenneth, Lee Wilkie and latterly Andy Webster.
However, when it came to the 2010 Scottish Cup final, Darren suffered more anguish injury meant he missed out on a winner’s medal after Ross County were defeated 3-0 at Hampden.
As it transpired, although still a United player the following season proved a highly frustrating campaign, the last of his century of appearances for United coming in a 2-1 victory at Rugby Park early in October. After leaving United, he played for Falkirk, Forfar Athletic and Brechin City where he was initially a Player/ Manager before hanging up his boots.
These days, holding a UEFA A Licence and UEFA Elite Youth Licence, he is a Sport and Fitness Lecturer and Assistant Manager at Cumbernauld Colts.

4 0 Fotheringham 8’, Watt 14’ 60’, Greive 64’
3PM Saturday 9 March 2024 | Tannadice Park | cinch Championship | Attendance: 7,676 United made it an impressive clean sweep over the Red Lichties on league duty.

A BLISTERING START
It didn’t take long for the goal to come as Kai Fotheringham paid dividends for his starting spot with a goal inside eight minutes. Miller Thomson was involved after some early crosses as his corner was met with first contact by Declan Gallagher before being flicked home by Fotheringham from close range.
Just before a quarter of an hour, another corner led to another goal! This time Middleton’s delivery from the opposite side, cleared the hustle and bustle, lading with Tony Watt at the back post who finished superbly - curling the ball into the far corner with the outside of his boot.
LOOKING FOR MORE
Louis Moult should have had our third as he latched onto a loose back pass and rounded Gaston, only to clip the ball over the bar.
In the last action of the half, Moult was so close to another screamer as his 25-yard freekick was only stopped by the crossbar!
An early second-half chance fell as Docherty
slid in Fotheringham and a super first touch took him inside the box. He smartly cut the ball back for Watt but Boruc saved with his legs to deny us a third.
JUST REWARDS
Goals three and four came as United cemented the points.
It was another mistake at the back that United capitalised on as Greive latched onto a loose ball and raced towards goal. Unselfishly, he slid the ball across for Watt to pass home from yards out on the hour mark!
Greive got a reward of his own as just four minutes later he was played through one on one and kept his cool to slide the ball under Boruc for our fourth.
TWISTING THE KNIFE
A nine-minute cameo from Arbroath substitute Kyle Robinson is all he could muster as two quick bookings saw the visitors reduced to ten.
Four was all she wrote as United remained top of the cinch Championship.

jeff clarke retires

Following 20 years of service, former FirstTeam Physio Jeff Clarke has now retired from his role at the club.
In November 2003 following an illustrious playing career in England, the former Manchester City, Sunderland and Newcastle United defender made the journey north to Tannadice through a connection with then Assistant Manager Gordon Chisholm, to become a part of Ian McCall’s backroom team. He would remain in that role through subsequent managerial changes for the next 17 years.
This would see Jeff work directly under 10 permanent managers during his time at Tannadice and he was also part of the squad that enjoyed success in the Scottish Cup Final guided by Peter Houston at Hampden in 2010.
In 2020, he moved into a new role within the Academy as part of the remit to achieve the Elite Academy status.
“I now take a bow to end my 53 years in professional football and these last 20 years at Dundee United. It has been a hugely satisfying career and as ever in football “never a dull moment”. As any tangerine supporter knows, it has been a rollercoaster ride, taking the emotions to the extremes of pain and pleasure. The high for me must be the 2010 cup final.”
“I arrived in 2003 under manager Ian McCall and more specifically his assistant Gordon Chisholm an old playing colleague from our days at Sunderland AFC. Now 20 years on and many managers later, I step aside from the game that has given me so much, the game that is almost unrecognisable from the one I knew even 20 years ago and certainly 50 years ago. It’s a young man’s game and I’m happy to leave it to that new generation.”
“My last few years at United were spent with the youth squad and that was more satisfying than I ever could have imagined. I now look forward to watching the progression of these young players into first-team football, as the recent introduction of Miller Thomson into the first team gave me a real thrill, may it continue in the historic development of youth talent that Dundee United are renowned for.”
“I thank everyone at Dundee United for their support over the years and I will always remain a loyal fan. The Arabs have been inexorably linked to my life and will continue to do so. I wish the club and supporters all the best for the future and will be happy supporting from the wings, and I will ensure my seat belt is good and tight for the rollercoaster.”
Jeff departs with the very best wishes from everyone at the club for him and his family who will also be back as VIP guests of the club in the boardroom for our match against Raith Rovers later this month.

DUNFERMLINE ATH dundee united
1

7.45PM Friday 15 March 2024 | East End Park | cinch Championship | Attendance: 6,368
It was a disappointing evening in Fife as Dunfermline ran out comfortable winners.

AN EARLY BLOW
In the opening flashpoint, there was an early caution for Chris Hamilton as he failed to let go of Craig Sibbald’s shirt following a smart turn from our number 14 in the middle of the park inside four minutes.
Chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges before the hosts took the lead through Matty Todd just after the ten-minute mark. Neat play initially from Alex Jakubiak saw off a number of United defenders before firing the ball out to Kane Ritchie-Hosler on the opposite flank. His cutback was inch perfect for The Pars’ number 10 who was alive in the box to slide home.
ADDING TO OUR WOES
Many of the men in tangerine looked somewhat puzzled when Hamilton escaped a second yellow card for bundling down Watt just inside The Pars’ half. To add to the troubles, it was our number 32 that was instead cautioned for simulation.
It was to be the least of our worries before the half, as Ritchie-Hosler curled in Dunfermline’s second eight minutes from time.
A BRIGHTER SPELL
We made our first change at the break as Middleton replaced Tillson in search of some
much-needed attacking threat.
Our number 15 was almost involved straight away as Gallagher’s long throw was helped on by Louis Moult - but Middleton’s well struck shot was blocked by a number of black and white shirts.
We really should have halved the deficit as Moult took aim from close range but could only fire wide of the mark.
ANOTHER SUCKER PUNCH
Just moments after our two best chances the game was out of sight as Ritchie-Hosler notched a brace.
McMann had his pocket picked in the middle of the park sending Ritchie-Hosler and Jakubiak racing clear. A simple one-two saw the latter slide the ball across the face of goal for The Pars’ number 7 to curl the ball around Walton.
There was more body on the line defending as Moult and Watt both had efforts blocked before Middleton fired just wide of the far post with a low drive.
A CONSOLATION
We did pull one back with ten minutes to play as Middleton’s cross was deflected into the net by Kyle Benedictus.
3 Todd 3’, Ritchie-Hosler 37’, 53’ Benedictus (OG) 80’THE EARLY DAYS
With the centenary of the name change from Dundee Hibernian to Dundee United having taken place in October, throughout the first half of the season we looked back at matches between visiting clubs and the Hibs.
During the second half, we’re highlighting the first-ever league meetings between United and our Championship rivals.
Of those nine clubs, only one involved a first league meeting that took place during this century and that is today’s visitors, Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
So, while on the title of this article may seem a bit odd, that first-ever league match certainly came during ICT’s early years – because it took place on 28 August 2004, when the Inverness club was just ten years old! They had taken only a decade to climb through the divisions and by season 2004-05 had won a place in the SPL.
Ian McCall was then beginning his second full season in charge of United, having achieved a fifth-place finish in his first. The manager introduced his new central midfield signing, Grant Brebner from Hibernian, but when Caley Thistle arrived at Tannadice, United had taken just two points from their opening three SPL matches, while the Highland club were one point better off.
United’s best chance of the first period came after 18 minutes when Mark Wilson played a perfect pass into the channel for Jim McIntyre. He released Jason Scotland into the box, where the striker unleashed a powerful low shot which brought a superb fingertip save from Mark Brown.
The second half produced an increase both in entertainment and in the quality of attacking play and United moved up a gear in their search for the opener.
Scotland set up Brebner at the edge of the box and he came within inches of a debut goal, his strike scraping past Brown’s left-hand post with
the keeper stranded.
Despite several other decent chances being created, the Tangerines failed to make their superiority count and paid the price when the visitors took a surprise 59th-minute lead. With United defenders claiming offside, Ross Tokely put Juanjo in the clear and the Spaniard rounded Bullock before going to ground. It must have been the slightest of touches from the big ‘keeper but it was enough to have the referee pointing to the spot and Barry Wilson calmly converted.
Caley Thistle’s best spell of the match followed and Wilson could have had his second minutes later, only to slice wide from 15 yards. McCall’s men gradually regained the initiative and on 71 minutes Billy Dodds brought another excellent save from Brown, but this time Chris Innes was on hand to tuck home the rebound from close range. Both managers made substitutions of attacking players in the search for a winner, but United looked the more likely to score again and it was Jim McIntyre who was to make the difference.
With barely five minutes remaining the striker controlled a ball from Brebner, with his back to goal and defenders in close attendance. But he produced the unexpected, swivelling before sending a left foot drive low past Brown. There was no way back for ICT and the three points for United were a fair reflection of their dominance of the second half.
United: Tony Bullock, Chris Innes, Mark Wilson, David McCracken, Alan Archibald, Barry Robson, Mark Kerr, Grant Brebner, Jason Scotland (James Grady), Jim McIntyre, Billy Dodds (Andy McLaren).
ICT: Mark Brown, Ross Tokely, Grant Munro, Stuart McCaffrey, Stuart Golabek, Richie Hart, Liam Keogh, Roy McBain (Steve Hislop), Barry Wilson, Graham Bayne, Juanjo (Bryan Prunty). Manager, John Robertson
That was to be a rare win for United in what overall was a dismal season. In the following 25 matches there were only three more occasions when three points were taken, culminating in Ian McCall’s dismissal in March. The appointment as his replacement of his assistant, Gordon Chisholm, did produce an improvement, although ultimately, it required a last-day win over Caley Thistle at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium to preserve United’s SPL status.
ICT finished just one place, but eight points, ahead of the Tangerines with survival in their debut season at the top level never in doubt.

on both sides

Two of the men in United’s team that day also played for Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Barry Robson made 167 appearances (27 goals) for ICT between 1997 and 2003, when United paid £50,000 to bring him to Tannadice. He was a member of our 2005 Scottish Cup final team, following which he was made club captain. Barry was the club’s top scorer in season 2006-07 but mid-way through the following campaign, after a total of 166 games and 37 goals, he moved to Celtic for a fee of £1.25m. He won one full cap and two B caps while with United.
Chris Innes also arrived at Tannadice in the summer of 2003, in his case from Kilmarnock. He made 50 appearances in tangerine (3 goals) before leaving for Gretna in January 2005. The following year he captained Gretna in the Scottish Cup final and although they lost to Hearts on penalties, he won First, Second and Third Division titles with the border club on their incredible journey to the Premier League (and oblivion). He spent season 2010-11 at the Caledonian Stadium but, at 34, made only 15 appearances, scoring once.

1912 - BRECHIN CITY 2-2 DUNDEE HIBS | NORTHERN LEAGUE
The above is the report in Monday’s Evening Telegraph but, unfortunately, it doesn’t list the scorers, nor does The Courier! Indeed, all avenues having been exhausted, who did score remains a mystery.

What looked like a certain goalless draw was transformed by a fortuitous substitution with only 10 minutes to go. United’s Duncan MacLeod, who had never really been in the thick of things, was taken off injured and Walter Smith came on. Quickly in action with two great tackles in his own penalty box, Wattie swept a clearance up the right wing, where Jackie Copland had made a break from defence. Over came the cross and Tommy Traynor thundered an angular drive past McGarr. Hardly had the bedlam died down when United’s other substitute, Graeme Payne, who had replaced Archie Knox at half-time, took a hand in East Fife’s downfall. He wafted over another cross from the right and Andy Gray, horizontal with the ground, headed it into the net in spectacular fashion.
As the Sunday Post reporter rather unkindly put it – “Until that moment, goals looked as scarce as elephants at the North Pole!
1940 - DUNDEE UTD 3-0 KILMARNOCK | EMERGENCY WAR CUP (QUARTER FINAL)
The spirit that had carried the Club through the previous rounds against Partick Thistle and Third Lanark was here in equal measure as United booked a semi-final place in the War Cup final. But it wasn’t quite as easy as the scoreline may suggest. Indeed, it made for compulsive viewing for the 14,000-strong crowd in Tannadice. The Terrors started at a blistering pace, scoring twice in the first 20 minutes, courtesy of the genius of Bobby Gardineer. On Ten minutes, Gardiner shot low. Milne pushed out a foot to the ball in flight. It hit his toe and went high into the net off the hands of a surprised Hunter. Ten minutes later Gardiner’s genius was responsible for another goal. He darted into the box and dropped the ball beautifully to the head of Fraser, who scored at the far post. And it was Gardiner again who removed all doubt eight minutes from the end. He caught an Adamson lob on the bounce and hooked it far out of the reach of Hunter. But between the time of the second and third points, it was an even struggle, but United’s superior finishing earned them a semi-final place where they were to meet Airdrie on the way to reaching the final against Rangers.
United hit the Bankies for six to boost hopes for a return ticket to the Premier Division. Craig Brewster, unmarked, picked his spot with a volley from 12 yards on 14 minutes. Two goals inside five minutes immediately before the interval effectively killed the game off. Robbie Winters drifted in from the right to power in a low shot which reared up off Irons and Craig Brewster clinically slotted home his second. United’s two-goal hero then created the third, getting a foot to the ball as Irons tried to dribble out of trouble and it ran loose to Gary McSwegan who scored with an angled drive. Early in the second half, Owen Coyle’s reverse pass found Gary McSwegan whose deflected drive rang up number four. Coyle then appeared to have opened his account, only for a defender to pop up and clear. However, the ball broke back to Owen whose chip back across goal enabled Brewster to complete his hat-trick with a diving header. Five minutes from time, Coyle headed in a cross from Andy McLaren to complete the rout.
