the gaffer Good afternoon and welcome to Tannadice!

I said after the last game against Inverness that I thought they were in a little bit of a false position. They have a lot of quality and experience and I always expected them to turn it around.

Last time out wasn’t an easy game and they have one of the best defensive records in the league so we will have to be bang at it. Duncan Ferguson has clearly had a real positive impact and got them more organised and they certainly look up for it.

AS ALWAYS WE WILL FOCUS ON OUR GAMEPLAN AND I’M DELIGHTED WITH HOW THINGS ARE GOING - WE’RE CERTAINLY ON TRACK FOR WHERE WE WANT TO BE. WE’RE RELUCTANT TO GET CARRIED AWAY AS THINGS CAN CHANGE QUICKLY SO WE WILL CONTINUE TAKING IT GAME BY GAME. We’ve had a great start but that’s all it is. There are some great numbers there to look at in terms of goals scored versus conceded but we can’t afford to get carried away.

We’ve scored a lot of goals without relying on one definitive talisman which is great for the group. What pleases me most is that no matter who has a jersey they continuously handle the occasion and produce high-quality performances when the pressure is on.

Your support has been incredible so far this season and we’re excited to be back at home this afternoon.

Argentinian superfan Agustin Mervic has been back in Scotland taking in the Tannadice action!

Agustin last visited in 2018 and this time round has taken in our 6-0 demolition of Arbroath as we celebrated 100 years of Dundee United and our 2-0 away win over Airdrieonians.

As we prepare for our clash with Inverness, we welcomed Agustin to Tannadice to watch the squad train, take a tour of the stadium and have lunch with our staff and first-team.

Three matches unbeaten under new management, ICT arrive at Tannadice this afternoon rejuvenated following a horrific run of one draw and nine defeats prior to Duncan Ferguson’s arrival in late September.

Despite only being kept off the bottom spot by Morton’s inferior goal difference, the Highlanders’ form over the last three matches is even more impressive when you factor in that they’ve all been against sides in the top half of the table. Back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since last April shows that a solid base has been re-established and we will have our work cut out to take the three points on offer today. Chris Mochrie snatched a stoppage-time winner in Inverness when we last met in September, and another tight affair seems to be on the cards today.

new faces A lack of creativity and a presence in attack were immediately highlighted by Ferguson and he’s moved quickly to address both areas.

Irishman Cillian Sheridan signed on a short-term deal at the end of last month. Putting pen to paper on a deal until January, the 34-year-old made his debut last week against Airdrieonians.

The 6’4” frontman brings a wealth of experience having featured for clubs in Scotland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Poland, New Zealand and Israel.

Now 33, David Wotherspoon has lost none of his desire or ability to turn a match single-handedly.

Making his debut last weekend, the Perth-born midfielder seemed to make time stand still as he turned Airdrieonians defenders inside out before slotting away the only goal of the match.

Beginning his career as a right back, he progressed through the Hibs youth set-up to feature over 150 times before gaining legend status at St Johnstone as he rang up 356 appearances, 27 goals and three trophies in the Fair City.

Signings made by the club in the summer include former United youngster Jake Davidson. The 23-year-old was loaned out several times whilst at Tannadice but failed to make the first team breakthrough.

Charlie Gilmour has been an ever-present in the league since arriving as a free agent in the summer. The 24-year-old is a former Scottish youth international and the ex-St Johnstone man operates in a deep-lying midfield role.

Luis Longstaff spent last season at Cove Rangers but began his career in the youth set-up at Liverpool. The midfielder scored the first goal of the Duncan Ferguson era and has started every Championship match this term.

Thirteen goals for Celtic B in the Lowland League tempted ICT to bring Adam Brooks north from Parkhead on a two-year deal. The striker has had to be patient, featuring predominantly from the bench.

Loanees Morgan Boyes (Livingston) and Max Anderson (Dundee) make up the new faces this campaign.

THE MANAGER DUNCAN FERGUSON

After the sacking of Billy Dodds in September, the capture of Duncan Ferguson to manage the side was an outstanding piece of business by the board. A vastly experienced coach having spent eleven years in a variety of roles from academy level to interim first team manager at Goodison, Caley have themselves a man with a clear vision of how he wants his side to play.

As a player, the 6’4” striker began his career at United, making his debut in 1990 and going on to feature in 88 matches, scoring an impressive 35 times on his way to becoming an Arab cult hero.

A £4m transfer to Rangers followed but a little over a year later he began his love affair with Everton. A club legend and fans’ hero, he featured 273 times over two spells and hit the net on 72 occasions. Two years at Newcastle between his spells on Merseyside saw him add an FA Cup runner-up medal to the 94/95 winners one he lifted with The Toffees.

An inductee into the Everton Hall of Fame, it was a tragedy that Ferguson’s personal relationship with the SFA saw him capped only seven times for Scotland.

ONE TO WATCH

Whilst ICT may be entrenched in the relegation play-off spot, the situation could be a lot worse but for the form of the veteran goalkeeper. Now in his seventh season at the club, the 33-yearold has kept back-to-back shutouts in recent weeks. After keeping the opposition at bay 28-eight times in the two previous campaigns, it’s easy to see why he’s been a fixture in the side, racking up 248 appearances for the club and keeping an impressive 84 clean sheets.

MARK RIDGERS

The former Ross County and Hearts youth was capped three times at U21 level and picked up a Scottish Cup winners medal as an unused sub in the 2012 Scottish Cup final. The Inverness man has also featured for East Fife, Airdrie United, St Mirren, Kilmarnock, Orlando City B and Partick Thistle in his career.

A native of Corby in Northamptonshire, Billy signed his first professional deal with Leicester City after coming through their youth ranks. He made his pro debut on loan at Hinckley United in the Conference North where he played just two games. He returned to Leicester for a season with the youth team and established himself as a goalscorer. However, at the end of his contract, he left to sign for Northampton Town.

Whilst with United, he was capped once by Northern Ireland and has had 11 caps in total.

With his loan spell in Scotland over, Billy signed a season-long loan with Oldham but returned to Inverness on loan on 31 January 2017, scoring a spectacular overhead kick to give Caley a victory over Rangers in February 2017, ending their winless streak that stood at 15 matches.

After two seasons with the Cobblers, Billy moved to Scotland where he signed for Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Despite a quiet first year, Billy went on to score 62 goals in three and a half seasons for the Highland side.

It was while at ICT, that Billy won his first cap for Northern Ireland, having played for the U21 side since 2008. During the January transfer window in 2015, he moved to Wigan Athletic for a reported £150,000.

In July 2017, he finally left Wigan Athletic on a free transfer, despite having a year to run on his contract, joining Ross County with whom he stayed until the end of season 2020-21.

Remaining in the Highlands, in June 2021, he began his third spell with Caley Thistle.

In August later that year, after a series of negotiations, Billy agreed a season-long loan move to Tannadice although United had had a fee of £200,000 accepted by Wigan.

In his first term back, Mckay was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year and in September last year surpassed Barry Wilson to become the club’s second all-time leading goal scorer, adding his 83rd goal in all competitions, with a goal in a 3–2 away win against Dundee in the Championship.

Billy made his debut in a 2–1 defeat away to Ross County but only played five games under Jackie McNamara before the manager was sacked.

Brought to the club to score goals, he made a sizeable contribution. His first goal came in a 2-1 home defeat to Kilmarnock, scoring from the spot – the first of six penalties he converted in his total of 13 goals from 35 appearances and was comfortably, the top scorer in his only season at Tannadice.

He scored his 99th and 100th Inverness goals in their 3–0 Scottish Cup semi-final win over Falkirk last April 2023 to book a place in the final but the 3-1 defeat meant Billy only collected a runners-up medal.

Although he has just celebrated his 35th birthday, he remains a regular in the side, having scored three times this season.

But it was in a campaign one that hasn’t lingered long in the memory, given the club’s relegation.

All told, the striker has made 258 appearances for his present club and has scored 103 goals. And he has taken his career total to just a couple off the 550 mark and with 178 goals, he is not far off an average of one in every three outings.

His most memorable moment was undoubtedly hitting a last-minute winner at Ross County to book a Semi-Final slot in the Scottish Cup against Hibs who edged through

Oft! A few contenders for that... Got to be the Skipper or Gal. Doc wears some ridiculous stuff and Gal wears the cheapest tracksuits I’ve seen...

Best player you have played against?

Holty or Sibbs would get a good laugh with either of them.

Tom Rogic, you couldn’t get near him and he found a way out of the tightest spaces.

Who is the best player of all time?

Lionel Messi. What he’s done in the game speaks for itself. Completed football!

I would have to say Falkirk vs Hibs Semi Final at Hampden. Sibby scoring the winner!

Never get too high and never get too low. Keep a level head!

United marked a historic occasion with a scintillating display!

Dundee United commemorated their 100th anniversary in style as they hit Arbroath for six under the Tannadice lights.

Looking resplendent in a unique, white-out shirt, it was yet another blistering start from the Terrors.

INSIDE two minutes, Kai Fotheringham’s corner appeared to have caught Lichties stopper Derek Gaston out at his near post, with all of a United persuasion in the area claiming the ball had crossed the line. Referee Colin Steven and his assistant disagreed however.

The match officials would be the centre of attention once more when Louis Moult stroked Glenn Middleton’s low ball across the box home from point-blank range - this time the flag raised for offside against the United frontman.

However, Moult wasn’t to be denied a second time, again cushioning a Middleton cutback into the back of the net to give Goodwin’s men the lead on seven minutes.

The hosts wouldn’t have to wait long for their second. At the second bite of the cherry, Fotheringham picked out Ross Docherty in the area, and the United skipper left evaded the despairing challenge of Thomas O’Brien before rattling the ball into the roof of the net despite the best efforts of Gaston.

On the stroke of half-time, Fotheringham found himself in the thick of the action again, this time writing his own name on the scoresheet. Scott McMann’s whipped delivery was fumbled by the

‘keeper, and Academy graduate Fotheringham was on hand to apply the finishing touch from less than three yards.

Into the second half, the tangerine waves of attack showed no signs of slowing, with United’s fourth goal coming courtesy of Tony Watt in the 57th minute.

After winning possession from David Gold in the centre-circle, Watt strode forward, unselfishly laying the ball to his right for Fotheringham to strike, but the youngster found his effort thwarted by Gaston. Fortunately, the rebound fell kindly for Fortheringham, who eventually returned scraps to Watt on the edge of the box.

The 29-year-old delicately dinked the ball over O’Brien’s lunging tackle and dispatched with complete conviction for his third league strike of the season.

Number five came just after the hour mark - Middleton recording his eighth assist in ten games as he laid the ball on a plate for colleague Moult to skilfully convert on the slide.

Substitute Mathew Cudjoe added the cherry on top of the centenary cake in the closing exchanges, sidestepping an outrageous attempted challenge from O’Brien to collect Walton’s Route One ball inside the attacking half.

The Ghanaian entered the right side of the penalty area, then sent a beautifully curled finish into the opposite corner to round off a truly fitting evening.

THE EARLY DAYS

With the focus on the centenary of the name change from Dundee Hibernian to Dundee United, throughout the season we’ll be looking back at meetings between visiting clubs and the Hibs.

With Inverness Caledonian Thistle not yet 30 years old, it may seem strange to seek a link with Dundee Hibs. But in fact, you don’t need to dig too deep to discover that one of the two clubs involved in the formation of ICT – Caledonian FC – met the Greens on four occasions just prior to the First World War. Caledonian (note: not Inverness Caledonian, though they were often referred to as such) were founded in 1886 and so had been in existence for 108 years when they merged with rivals Inverness Thistle to form the club that belatedly brought Scottish League football to the Highland capital in 1994.

Dundee Hibs first met Caledonian in 1912 in the Scottish Qualifying Cup, an important competition for clubs below Division One in those days, as reaching the quarter-finals provided entry to the Scottish Cup. Then as now, the Highland League’s best were on a par with Second Division clubs – as the Hibs were soon to find out. They appeared to have given themselves a great chance of reaching the semi-final by returning from Telford Street Park with a 1-1 draw and there were high hopes among the crowd of 6000 at Tannadice the following week.

However, it was not to be. Caley scored once in each half without reply to end the hopes of manager Pat Reilly and his men, although at least the Greens had reached the Scottish Cup for the first time.

A year later the two clubs were again drawn to meet each other in the Qualifying Cup, on this occasion in the semi-final, at Tannadice. The closely fought contests in 1912 meant that the re-match was eagerly anticipated, and a measure of the interest generated was that, in the week leading up to the tie, the sports pages of the Dundee newspapers made the match their lead item. It was reported to be the first time that Dundee Hibs had managed to upstage city neighbours Dundee FC (then one of the leading clubs in Division One) in terms of press coverage.

Dundee Hibernian secretary/manager Pat Reilly went to great lengths to publicise the cup tie, with posters distributed not just throughout the city but as far afield as Perth and Montrose.

For the three Division Two matches prior to the semi-final he rested key players, while arranging extra training sessions for the team (who were all part-time). On the Friday night they were all installed in a city hotel, a rare – and costly - occurrence at the time.

Accompanied by six hundred supporters, Caledonian arrived at Tannadice in a confident mood.

Undefeated that season (which they would end as Highland League champions) they retained pleasant memories of their visit the year before.

A measure of the huge popularity that cup competitions then enjoyed with the public was evidenced by the fact that in December 1913 – in a season when the average league attendance at Tannadice was less than 1700 - there were 8500 there for the semi-final.

They saw Hibs’ leading scorer Collie Martin give them the lead after just five minutes but a miskick by centre-half and captain Bill Henderson allowed Caledonian to equalise before half-time. The deadlock could not be broken during the second half, and so the teams prepared to meet again the following Saturday.

A replay was not anticipated by the SFA, because the final was scheduled for that day. Instead, two special trains carried 800 Hibs supporters to the Highland capital. The journey home must have been a boisterous one, because a goal in each half on a snow-covered pitch from winger Fred Stoessel gave the men in green what Pat Reilly described as a brilliant victory.

It also earned them a place in a national final for the first time in the club’s short history (where they ultimately lost, after two more replays, to Albion Rovers).

Fred Stoessel was born in London in 1890 but ten years later his family moved to Dundee, where they lived in the Hilltown area.

By the age of 20 Fred was employed as a municipal clerk with Dundee Gas Board and was playing junior football for Violet, along with his future Dundee Hibs team-mate Willie Linn.

He signed for the Hibs in the summer of 1913 and was a key member of the team until he left to join the army soon after the start of the First World War. He survived the conflict and made a brief return to Tannadice in 1922 but emigrated to Canada in 1927. He served with the Canadian forces in the Second World War and died in Canada in 1974, aged 84.

4 NOVEMBER 1911 - ST BERNARD’S 7-1 DUNDEE HIBS | LEAGUE (DIVISION TWO) Although Hibs made a bright start and took the lead through David Scrimgeour, the Edinburgh side proved too strong and eased their way to a comfortable victory thanks to a Lamb hat-trick and singles from Henderson, Smith, Ferguson and Currie.

1933 - ALBION ROVERS 4-3 DUNDEE UTD | LEAGUE (DIVISION TWO) A kidney injury to Chris McIntosh proved pivotal in this Cliftonhill clash. With United leading 2-1 thanks to goals from Ouchterlonie and McBain, keeper Chris Mcintosh was badly injured and stretched off reducing United to ten men. Dave Corbett had only just taken over and Rovers levelled, but Ouchterlonie restored United’s lead just before the break. Having suffered a 2-1 home defeat, the uphill task in hand was hardly made easier by the absence of so many experienced players, but nonetheless, the men in tangerine fought valiantly and were perhaps unlucky not take the tie into extra time. A firsthalf double from Francisco Sandaza cancelled out goals from Steven Davis and Sasa Papac, and just when Scott Roberston’s second-half strike looked like it was going to be the winning goal, a last-gasp thunderbolt from Kevin Thomson meant the points were shared, extending United’s unbeaten run to eight games.

There were no Halloween scares for the Terrors as we took all three points in Airdrie.

Dundee United recorded their third victory in ten days as they defeated Airdrieonians in Lanarkshire thanks to a goal in either half from Kai Fotheringham.

Just minutes after Captain Ross Docherty was withdrawn with a groin injury, the Terrors would hit the front at a bitterly cold Excelsior Stadium.

A looping delivery from Glenn Middleton caused chaos in the Diamonds’ penalty area, and Academy graduate Fotheringham was on hand to pounce, prodding the ball through a ruck of players to find the back of the net.

Perhaps for the first time this term, the United backline was put under pressure for an extended period of time, with Rhys McCabe’s men carving out multiple opportunities to restore parity ahead of the interval.

However, a few clever tactical tweaks from United Gaffer Jim Goodwin nullified the hosts’ threat before the tangerine dam burst.

Seven minutes into the second period, in-form wideman Fotheringham gave his side breathing space with a second of the evening.

Architects of their own downfall due to an insistence on playing out from the back under duress from United, a loose pass from Liam McStravick was intercepted by Tony Watt in the attacking third.

The 29-year-old stroked the ball into the feet of colleague Declan Glass, who in turn sent Fotheringham racing through one-on-one with Joshua Rae inside the 18-yard box and he made no mistake to find a way beyond his opposite number.

Goodwin’s side are now 15 matches undefeated in all competitions, and have a four-point buffer at the summit of the cinch Championship table.
