THE GAFFER
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Tannadice!
Firstly, I’d like to congratulate the players who have been away representing their countries over the international break.
It’s fantastic for the morale of the group and continues to breed good spirits and inspire the whole camp.
We’ve been on the road for a number of weeks prior to the international break so we’re really looking forward to be back infront of our home support once again.
I think there’s over 10,000 expected and there’s real positivity around the place at the moment. It’s up to myself, the coaching staff and the players to make sure we continue our strong start to the season.
Ahead of this afternoon, we know the quality Hibs have got within the squad. They’ve built a very strong group of
players, and we know the threats that they carry.
They are probably not on the kind of run that they would like – one win in their last seven games – but our main concern is ourselves.
It’s been a strange start as the league campaign has felt a little bit stop start due to the breaks. It’s been difficult to continue our momentum but the players are excited to get going again.
We’ve got to make sure we apply ourselves properly. Our squad is full of quality and the whole group has been required this season - that will be no different this afternoon.
I hope you all enjoy the game!
- Jim Goodwin

Dundee United are proudly continuing our support of Show Racism the Red Card’s Match Actions Campaign at this weekend’s clash with Hibernian!
Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s leading anti-racism Education Charity, working within schools, workplaces, sports, and community organisations to educate children, young people, and adults on challenging prejudice and stereotypes. Using the power of football is a powerful tool to initiate conversations about anti-racism and our club has supported their messages of tolerance and inclusion for many years. Now more than ever, the importance of active antiracism cannot be overstated.
Across Scottish football, clubs will show their commitment to anti-racism this weekend. The fixtures also coincide with Show Racism the Red Card’s UK-wide annual fundraising drive, Wear Red Day, taking place on Friday 18th. On this day, individuals and groups up and down the country are encouraged to wear red and donate to show their support for the campaign and its message.
Football is a sport that is loved across the world and football matches should be an enjoyable experience for everyone, of all backgrounds. Scotland is equipped with the tools to challenge and eradicate racism from football and society.

REPAYING THE FAITH
After being drafteed in from the start, Louis Moult put us ahead with his second goal in as many games as the clock struck 20 minutes.
An exquisite outsideof-the-foot pass from Will Ferry was crashed back across goal by Stephenson - who did well to keep it in play - for our number nine to turn home from close range.
BRACE FROM THE BENCH
Kilmarnock’s half-time substitute David Watson scored twice before the hour mark to turn the tie around.
The first came as a deep delivery from Danny Armstrong was superbly finished with an overhead kick at the back post. A fortuitous second fell
his way as Armstrong cut inside and let fly before a deflection off the Scotland U21 international left Walton wrong-footed to find the net.
It got worse as Marley Watkins added a third as a header off the underside of the bar fell his way to nod home into an empty net on 64 minutes.
IN TOUCHING DISTANCE
We shuffled the pack with 15 to play
OFF: Babunski, Gallagher, Docherty and Dalby
ON: Ševelj, Thomson, Middleton and van der Sande
The changes paid off as we were back to within one just over ten minutes from time.
Determined play from Miller Thomson won the
ball back on the slide before it found the feet of Sibbald outside the area and his fierce effort caught O’Hara out and nestled in the far corner. As the ball hit the net, Craig Napier pulled it back for an alleged foul by Thomson in the build-up but after an extremely long VAR check we were rightfully awarded the goal.
LEVEL AT THE DEATH
Deep into eight additional minutes, United were awarded a penalty as Stephenson was cut down inside the area.
Showing metal, Ross Graham was in no two minds of taking it and sent O’Hara the wrong way to grab a point in Kilmarnock

OPENING THREATS
There was a brisk pace in Paisley following kickoff, with both teams displaying attacking intent in the early minutes.
The hosts came close within the first 60 seconds as Marcus Fraser kept a free-kick alive, allowing Richard Taylor an opportunity to attempt the spectacular from inside the box. However, his effort sailed high over the bar.
Moments later, Declan Gallagher picked out Will Ferry with a deft clipped pass down the left flank. Whipping in a dangerous ball, Sam Dalby rose to meet it but he couldn’t get the necessary purchase on his header to cause any trouble.
A SWING AND A MISS
Our best chance of the first half came in the 23rd
minute as Ross Graham nodded a delivery back into the danger area. Looping over the defence, it looked almost certain that Emmanuel Adegboyega would score his first United goal but as he swung at goal, he failed to make any connection and the danger was cleared.
A CHANGE IN SHAPE
We made a tactical switch on 38 minutes as Glenn Middleton replaced Jort van der Sande in aid of more support down our left.
A blocked Killian Phillips effort was the closest any side came in what remained and we went in level at the break.
There were loud appeals for a penalty as a teasing delivery from Middleton was headed goalwards by Stephenson and blocked
by a defender - looking like it came off his arm upon first viewing. Referee Ross Hardie had a quick word in his ear but it was nothing doing in the eyes of the officials.
MANNY’S THE MAN
We hit the front with 15 minutes to go as Adegboyega hit his first goal in tangerine.
It came as a corner was cleared into the path of Docherty and he thundered an effort towards goal. A strong save from Ellery Balcombe kept him out but as he palmed the ball into the danger area, the Republic of Ireland U21 international was there to nod home and give us the lead.
We displayed guts and courage as the clock ticked into six additional minutes before the referee blew time.
INTERNATIONAL ROUND UP
During the international break, six members of our first-team squad jetted off to various corners of the globe to represent their respective countries in competitive action.
From Montserrat to Trieste via Kampala, let’s have a look at some of their adventures!
JORT VAN DER SANDE
After making the 5,075mile pilgrimage to the Caribbean island paradise where he enjoyed his formative years, Jort van der Sande secured his sixth and seventh international caps in Bonaire’s double-header with Montserrat.
Rather than taking his place at the spearhead of Rilove Janga’s frontline, the 28-year-old was deployed in the heart of the CONCACAF Nations League C action as a central midfielder.
Flourishing in his new role, van der Sande remained true to his tenacious and combative style of play, winning more aerial duels
across the two matches than any of his colleagues. In the latter clash, he also boasted a 100% dribble success rate, taking on his opponent with effect five times.
Despite falling to defeat in the opening matchup in Kingston, a 1-0 triumph three days later courtesy of an Ayrton Cicillia strike helped Bonaire move off the bottom of Group One as they look to avoid relegation into League C.
RICHARD ODADA
Richard Odada continues to be a key figure within the Kenya set-up, and having now made his 20th appearance for his homeland, is the most capped player at Dundee United.
The Harambee Stars battled with eastern rivals, Cameroon, on two occasions over the weekend as the pair target a place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations via Qualifying Group J.w
His 13th and 14th consecutive Kenya starts saw him retain a
whopping pass accuracy percentage average of 92% against the fivetime AFCON Champions, but both matches unfortunately ended in defeat.
Their quest to qualify for next year’s edition of the tournament resumes in November against Zimbabwe and latterly Namibia - both of whom have fallen at the hands of an Odada-led side in recent months.
DAVID BABUNSKI
Accepting his 20th callup to a resurgent North Macedonia side, former Barcelona starlet David Babunski marked his return to the fold with an influential display as Blagoja Milevski’s men swept Latvia aside.
Our number ten played two-thirds of the UEFA Nations League C Group Four fixture, and led the charts for accurate passes into the final third, with eight. Furthermore, no player on the pitch successfully dribbled past
their opponent on more occasions than Babunski - elegance personified on the right of the front trio.
The 30-year-old was then an unused substitute in the subsequent tussle with Armenia.
Eye-catching finishes from ex-Aberdeen star Bojan Miovski and Isnik Alimi in the closing quarter sent North Macedonia six points clear at the top of Group Four, and they now sit within touching distance of promotion to League B.
EMMANUEL ADEGBOYEGA
Netting the winner on William Hill Premiership Matchday Seven and making his Ireland U21s bow in a crucial UEFA Under-21 EURO Qualifying clash with Norway - all in a week’s work for Emmanuel Adegboyega!
The Dundalk native lined up on the right of a back three which featured compatriots plying their trade in Holland and Italy, as the boys in green played out a 1-1 draw with their Nordic opponents.
Whilst earning his first international stripes, Adegboyega made four interceptions, won seven defensive duels and made 44 passes which found their intended target.
A match-up with table-topping Italy followed - the Norwich City loanee once again named in Jim Crawford’s starting XI.
Win or bust in Trieste, the Emerald Isle’s youngsters earned a Group A point with a valiant display, however this wouldn’t be enough to secure a place in the playoffs for next year’s Finals in Slovakia.
JACK NEWMAN AND MILLER THOMSON
Jack Newman and Miller Thomson were reduced to spectating Scotland U21s’ disappointing reverses to Belgium and latterly Kazakstan - results which ended any hopes of the Young Team competing in the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championships.

FOCUS ON HIBERNIAN
Defeat to Motherwell last weekend saw Hibernian lose for the fifth time in eight matches, leaving today’s guests sat in tenth place, a mere point from the foot of the Premiership table.
With just six goals from seven league matches, the men from Easter Road have underachieved at the business end of the park and, with a tricky run of fixtures coming up, they’ll be desperate to find the right formula in front of goal this afternoon.
Recent history favours United with two wins and two draws from the four most recent encounters. However, prior to that Hibs were victors in five successive visits to Tannadice.
THE GAFFER DAVID GRAY
Immortalised in the club’s history for ‘THAT’ Hampden winner against Rangers in just his second season at Easter Road, the fans’ favourite was appointed as Head Coach in June. After four previous shortterm caretaker spells, the board decided that the 36-year-old was the man to lead the Hibees into the new season.
As a player, the full-back made his senior debut for Manchester United in the Carling Cup but after loans at Crewe and Plymouth, he was released and signed for Preston NE without featuring again for United. After two years at Deepdale and spells with Stevenage and Burton Albion, he became Alan Stubbs’ first signing and went on to make 177 appearances in green and white.
His first full season in management hasn’t been without its challenges however, and with bitter rival Hearts up next weekend the pressure is very much on.
ONE TO WATCH
JUNIOR HOILETT
The Canadian signed for Blackburn Rovers as a 13-yearold and spent time on loan at Paderborn and St Pauli due to work permit issues before making his Rovers debut. Going on to represent QPR, Cardiff, Reading, Vancouver Whitecaps and Aberdeen at club level, the 34-year-old scored also earned 63 caps, scoring sixteen times.
Possessing both pace and trickery, the left winger brings a wealth of experience from well over five hundred club matches and notched his first Hibs goal last weekend against Motherwell in just his third appearance.
MARVIN EKPITETA arrived in June from Blackpool. The 29-year-old made almost 150 appearances in his four years with The Seasiders, having previously won the National League with Leyton Orient. An ever present in the Premiership thus far, he scored on his Hibees debut at Elgin City.
NECTARIOS TRIANTIS has returned for a second loan spell from Sunderland after featuring twice for them at the start of the season. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has been Hibs’ stand-out performer in recent weeks but was red-carded last time out.
MYKOLA KUHAREVICH scored at Tannadice during an earlier loan spell with
Hibs back in April 2023. On loan from Troyes on that occasion, the 6’4” frontman scored five times in fifteen matches and returns as a Swansea City player this time around.
WARREN O’HORA left MK Dons in the summer after four seasons and over 150 appearances. The 25-year-old Dubliner began his career with Bohemians in his hometown before joining Brighton and winning the Seagulls’ Young Player of the Year for the 2019/20 season.
JOSEF BURSIK joined on a season long loan from Club Brugge.
KWON HYEOK-KYN is another on loan in Leith. Capped at
u23 level by South Korea he signed a five year deal at Parkhead in 2023.
JORDAN SMITH joined from Stockport but his only appearance was in the shock League Cup defeat to Kelty Hearts.
JACK IREDALE s still awaiting his debut following his move from Bolton. No stranger to Scottish football, the 28-yearold defender previously featured against United whilst at his hometown club Morton.
KIERON BOWIE cost Hibs a “significant fee” from Fulham. Unfortunately, after just four matches, the 22-year-old striker suffered a hamstring injury on international duty.

DANNY SWANSON
To say the least, there was nothing conventional about the remarkable footballing career of Daniel Joseph Swanson!
Certainly, given that as a youngster, the possibility of him playing professionally appeared mighty slim, yet now aged 37, he is still playing.
Born with a heart defect, he underwent numerous operations, including a heart bypass at the age of thirteen. After all that few could have imagined that he would win a Scottish Cup medal, be named in a Scotland squad, play in Europe, feature in over 100 Scottish Premiership matches and help win silverware with Peterborough United.
After overcoming those early health problems, Danny played for Hutchison Vale and Leith Athletic before joining Berwick Rangers, making his debut at the start of season 2005–06.
Playing the majority of Third Division matches that season, a knee injury restricted him to just three league appearances the following season when Berwick were promoted to the Scottish Second Division, however, he was injuryfree the following season which was to be his last at Shielfield Park having made over 50 appearances, scoring five times.
Despite his promising potential, Arabs’ were surprised when United boss Craig Levein stated his new signing was a long-term replacement for Cardiff loansigning Willo Flood.
The up-and-coming midfielder signed a contract until 2011 with Levein revealing, “I’m delighted to get Danny. I’ve watched his career since I was at Leicester a few years ago.” Clearly confident in his own ability, Danny had rejected a move to Hamilton, as the lure of playing in the SPL was too strong to resist.
“United are a good Club for giving
youngsters a chance,” commented the newcomer. In Levein’s opinion, he felt his acquisition gave him a nicely balanced midfield. At the time he declared, “We’ve got a solid base to form in midfield now, with the likes of Morgaro Gomis and Prince Bauben, covering the defensive side of things.
“But Danny is more of an attacking player. Willo Flood is in there just now, but he’s on loan and we have to be careful we don’t get into a position where him going back leaves us with a big gap.
On completing his move to the Premier League on New Year’s Day 2008, he made his debut the following day as a substitute in a 4–1 win over Hearts. The first of his 12 goals for The Terrors came in a 2–0 victory over Motherwell in March 2008. For his first two seasons, he mainly featured as an impact substitute, starting only 11 of his 48 league appearances.
In season 2009–10, Swanson started United’s opening three league matches, claiming assists in three of the club’s four goals earning him a regular place in the side, culminating in him being in the starting line-up for United’s 2010 Scottish Cup triumph against Ross County in 2010.
His tally of seven goals that season was his best during four and a half years in tangerine. Standout midfield performances earned him a Scotland call-up in October 2011, but a medial ligament strain limited him to 19 appearances, scoring three times, including in a 3-3 draw at Easter Road. His 127th and final appearance for United came in a 2-0 win at Motherwell in May 2012.
After his contract expired that summer, he joined Peterborough United on a two-year deal, where he made 79 appearances, scored five goals, and turned down a contract extension at the end of the 2013-14 season.
In his final season, he helped Posh win the EFL Trophy by defeating Chesterfield 3-1 at Wembley Stadium.
After rejecting a new contract with the London Road outfit, he switched to Coventry City before returning to Scotland on loan to St Johnstone in February 2015. This was the first of three occasions on which he was to sign for Saints.
Though he returned to Coventry during the 2015 close season, his contract was ended by mutual consent at the beginning of September,
Although he then agreed a contract with Hearts until the end of the season, after only nine appearances in five months, he left by mutual consent to start a second spell at McDiarmid on an 18-month deal.
Hibs – his boyhood heroes - entered his CV in April 2017 when penning a pre-contract agreement, but In stark contrast to his Tannadice tenure, his Easter Road stint was less successful and shortlived.
Injuries, unfortunately, restricted his appearances for Hibees in the first part of season, but he did make 21 appearances scoring once, but after just three games the following season – including a second European appearance, a home tie against NSI Nunavik (The Faroes) – his other being with United away to AEK Athens in 2010.
His third spell with Saints came to pass in 2018 until he was released by the club in May 2020.
Thereafter, in July 2020, he signed for East Fife, on a two-year deal and, now aged 37, he is still playing having this summer signed for Lowland League Cowdenbeath – the ninth club of his unusual career pathway,
19 OCTOBER
FLASHBACK FOCUS
STANDARD 0-0 DUNDEE
UTD | EUROPEAN CUP
United’s status as a dark horse amongst the elite company of the European Cup would be tested against opponents who would view themselves in a similar light.
United controlled possession early on, with only a brief scare when Davie Narey’s light pass back forced
Hamish McAlpine to act quickly to stop Hrubesch. Ralph Milne created the first chance, sending a cross to Dodds, whose shot went just over the bar. Milne continued to threaten, delivering dangerous crosses, including one that skimmed the crossbar. Standard struggled to contain him, as he set up Kirkwood for a blocked shot and nearly found Bannon for a long-range effort. Standard’s first real chance came just before halftime when Grundel’s shot was cleared off the line by Paul Hegarty after a break by Plessers.
The second half was if anything, slightly lower key than the first. Standard’s possession was limited to the area in front of United’s extremely disciplined back four. Standard created one more genuine opportunity when Plessers set up Grundel, who cut in from the left and shot quickly from the edge of the box but his low drive went just past McAlpine’s left post. As the game approached
full-time, United almost snatched a winner when Bannon, winning a header on the edge of his own box, ran the length of the park, to cross only for a Standard deflection to take the ball away from Kirkwood at the far post with the goal waiting.
In a competition with Liverpool, Hamburg and Roma, United’s outsider status is perhaps understandable, but equally, this was their 49th game in Europe, and it showed. Content to rely on the defensive rigour of their back four, supported superbly by Holt and Derek Stark in central midfield, United kept Standard at arm’s length, using the pace of Bannon and Milne on the break. It was a performance of seasoned European campaigners, who knew exactly what was required to secure a superb result away from home.
1912
BROXBURN UNITED 0-1 DUNDEE HIBS QUALIFYING CUP
Willie Linn - the matchwinner at Broxburnmade a record number of appearances for Dundee Hibs.
Only around a thousand witnessed the Greens advance to the fifth round of the Qualifying Cup and it was in fortuitous fashion. Indeed, Pat Reilly’s team were more than matched by the Central League outfit with Linn’s goal after eight minutes all that separated the sides.
1935
DUNDEE UTD 4-2 EAST FIFE LEAGUE
Around 4,500 watched a ding-dong battle in which both sides finished with ten men, but it was United who claimed victory, despite playing
with left-back McRitchie, injured and limping on the left wing from just before half-time. Jackie Kay gave the hosts an interval lead on 28 minutes, but Downie levelled six minutes after the restart. George Ross quickly regained the lead for Jimmy Brownlie’s charges. However, equally as swiftly, Adams cancelled it out. And a fourth goal in 11 minutes scored by Arthur Milne put United back in front. Milne went from saint to sinner being sent off following a clash with East Fife’s Casciani accompanying him. Kay’s late strike for his second of the afternoon ensured victory.
1968
DUNDEE UTD 2-1 AIRDRIE LEAGUE
Kenny Cameron heads home the winner to polish off the Diamonds.
A let-off at one end proved to be United’s catalyst to victory. An unbelievable miss by Diamond Willie McPheat spurred a hitherto lacklustre home side, to victory. It prompted a fantastic five-minute spell to win both points. Just after half-time, McPheat missed a proverbial sitter.
United raced to the other end, where Ian Mitchell had the ball in the net, only to be denied due to an earlier infringement. Seconds later. Kenny Cameron cut the ball back to Alex Reid, who made no mistake on 62 minutes. And this power play continued when Kenny Cameron headed in a Wilson Wood cross four minutes later. Airdrie had been making things difficult for the homesters, but their profligate finishing cost them dearly, although McPheat did bag a late consolation counter.
1996
DUNFERMLINE 1-1 DUNDEE UTD | LEAGUE
Never a classic, United appeared on their way to collecting maximum points from the meeting of the two promoted clubs until Andy Tod popped up with a header thirteen minutes from the end. Earlier, Robbie Winters headed in an Andy McLaren cross after 62 minutes.
YOUR UNITED!
NAME: ROBERT CLARK AGE: 50 FROM: DOUGLAS
How did you become a Dundee United fan?
My family used to run a Celtic supporters bus from Dundee, from the 50’s onwards. My cousins who were a good few years older than me, were going to watch United. So myself and brother, and other cousins started taking an interest in United. My unlce put a bus on to Parkhead, it was when there was a lot of trouble at games, and my mum wouldn’t let me go. As a softener, she got me a season ticket at Tannadice. The rest is history.
What was your first Dundee United game?
Dundee United v Spurs 1979
What’s your favourite Dundee United game?
14th of May 1983.
What has been your most memorable moment as a Dundee United supporter?
Taking my 1 year old son to the NY Day 6-2 massacre.
What’s your matchday routine?
It varies now. I used to be up, washed, pint, game. These days, it’s a race against the clock to get my son to and from his football, then up to Dundee in time for kick off.
Who is your all-time favorite Dundee United player and why?
Can it be a team? Those days of the 80’s, we’ll never experience it again, no club will. Even the old firm, they won’t experience what a team like that, meant to a small club like us. If not, then Luggy, brilliant, brilliant player.
A Dundee United Cult Hero?
Got to be Ivan Golac. Cult hero, legend, he was only with us for about 18 months, but won our first Scottish Cup.
Best individual performance from a Dundee United player?
Ralph Milne v Borrusia Moenchengladbach.
Best goal you’ve ever seen Dundee United score?
So many different goals that could be considered the ‘best’, individual goals, team goals, rockets. Ralphies chip, every day of the week.
