THE GAFFER
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Tannadice!
After a really successful season we’re back where we feel the club belong, and there’s no bigger occasion to kick-off our Premiership campaign! We’ll have good celebrations prior to the game, flying the champions’ flag – but it’s not something we ever want to be celebrating again.
We know how tough a test this afternoon will be. Dundee are a good side and, in his first year in management, Tony Docherty did a remarkable job getting them into the
top six. He seems to have added some more quality to the group he had last season. That being said, we are very excited about it. There’s no nervousness within our group. We’re in a good place and hopefully, that shows on the park.
When you are trying to sell the club to potential signings, doing your recruitment, it is all geared towards how big this football club is. This is why some of those players have joined Dundee United – to be involved in games like this.
The Scottish Premiership this season will probably be the most competitive
and strongest that it’s been for a long time. We’ve got all the big derbies back and, from an outsider looking in, it’s exciting.
The support we had all of last season was incredible and having over 6,300 Season Tickets sold for this year is a massive achievement - one supporters should be proud of. It’s another full house this afternoon and hopefully the masses are leaving Tannadice with the bragging rights!
I hope you all enjoy the game!
- Jim Goodwin

OUR NUMBERS
Ahead of our opening William Hill Premiership match of the 2024/25 campaign, Dundee United can confirm which number each member of our firstteam squad will wear throughout the competitive season.
After returning for a second-successive loan spell with the club, Jack Walton claims the number one jersey, and fellow shot-stopper Dave Richards is set to wear 25.
Macedonian duo Kristijan Trapanovski and David Babunski will occupy seven and ten respectively, whilst two of our other international arrivals, Richard Odada and Jort van der Sande, will see 12 and 20 adorn the reverse of their jerseys.
The final changes in single figures award Ryan Strain with two and Vicko Ševelj with five, with Will Ferry’s decision to take on 11, and a sentimental choice of 70 for Meshack Ubochioma completing the selections of our summer recruits. 1
DERBY DAY OPENERS
A passing comment in the Press Box during our friendly with Luton Town got us thinking! While it has not been a regular occurrence, a Dundee derby has heralded the new season eight times.
DUNDEE HIBS 1-5 DUNDEE
EASTERN LEAGUE 18 AUGUST 1917
You must go back more than a century to find the first occasion in 1917, but it was only the Great War that brought the two clubs face to face for the first time.
Despite the war, football continued with the War
Office’s approval, though player availability was a challenge. The First Division persisted for three seasons, while the Second Division lasted only one. Dundee Hibs then played in the Eastern League for the next two seasons.
Due to travelling restrictions in the summer of 1917, Dundee, Raith
Rovers and Aberdeen were suspended from the top league. Dundee and Raith Rovers were invited to join the Eastern League and this was to set up the first ever competitive city derby.
Several clubs - East Stirlingshire, Lochgelly United, St Bernard’s, Bathgate and Broxburn
– had all withdrawn, leaving only seven clubs – Dundee Hibs, Armadale, Cowdenbeath Dunfermline, East Fife in the competition even with the inclusion of the two newcomers.
As a result, to maintain interest, it was agreed clubs would play home and away twice.
The opening fixture saw

LEAGUE CUP 11 August 1962
Fast-forward 45 years to unveil the next derby opener and this was an auspicious occasion on several counts.
For starters, it was the opening of the new and improved Tannadice with the cantilever stand and North Terracing now fully completed lifting the ground capacity to around 25,000.
Proceedings lived up to the hype that such an occasion engenders as the
Dundee Hibs cross the road to Dens. Despite
two teams fought tooth and nail.
Remarkably, given it was the start of a new season, there were only two debutants – the goalkeepers at both ends. During the summer, Donald Mackay had moved from Forfar Athletic and Bert Slater swapped Liverpool’s Bill Shankly for Dundee’s Bob Shankly as his manager.
A lan Gilzean twice gave the visitors the lead, only for Wattie Carlyle to
the home side being worthy 5-1 winners, Hibs were not as poor as the score may suggest. Tommy Taylor put the home side ahead, but Vic Outerson quickly levelled, goals from Taylor, George Lamb, and Frank Murray earned Dundee a 4-1 interval advantage. Jim Herron scored the only of the second half.
equalize both times with a header and a low drive.
With a strong wind at their backs in the second half, United secured a winner six minutes from the end, with Jim Irvine scoring despite an injury.
Unfortunately, United weren’t to qualify from the section, but by holding Celtic to a goalless draw in the final group game it enabled to Hearts to pip The Hoops in the section of which Dundee finished bottom.

LEAGUE CUP 8 August 1964
Just four years later, there was a change of venue, United beginning a season of hugely contrasting fortunes at Dens.
However, at first, all went well with a win en route to winning the section and reaching the semi-finals of the League Cup. Dennis Gillespie put United ahead after 14 minutes, and Lewis Thom extended that lead twenty minutes later before Andy Penman’s penalty conversion reduced the arrears before the interval. With Bert Slater performing heroics in Dundee’s goal to keep
United at bay, it came as something of a surprise when Bobby Waddell notched a somewhat fortuitous equaliser with 20 minutes left. But seven minutes from the end Frannie Munro, capped a promising debut, by steering in a header from debutant Johnny Graham’s cross.

LEAGUE CUP 13 August 1966
For the third time in four years, the two city clubs were in the same section and started in the season. It was back to Tannadice and a 90-minutes in which United were to win comfortably, albeit the goals took a while to come.
The big difference between the sides was that Jerry Kerr’s team contained no summer arrivals, whereas Bobby Ancell’s side had three newcomers. And whilst they weaved pretty patterns, they rarely threatened to score.
Meanwhile, John Arrol was by far the busier keeper notably denying Dennis Gillespie on several occasions.
He was finally beaten midway through the second half by an angled Oryan Persson drive. Then with ten minutes left Billy Hainey – United’s first-ever substitute – added being the first one to score firing
home from the edge of the box.
It was all to no avail, however, as Aberdeen won all six games to qualify from the section.
DUNDEE UNITED 3-0 DUNDEE
PREMIER DIVISION 11 August 1979
This was the first occasion on which a Dundee derby in the topflight heralded a new season and it made for compelling viewing.
In as difficult a game as they are likely to face at home, the Tangerines gradually wore down a determined Dundee.
United went ahead following an Addison left-wing corner.
Donaldson made a great, one-handed save from Pettigrew’s header, but the ball ran to Sturrock, who scored easily.
Skipper Ray Stewart missed a penalty before half-time. The award was given after Barr tumbled Sturrock, but Donaldson kept it out with his knees.
Dundee had their best spell midway through the second half. For a short time, United’s failure to capitalise on the earlier leading-up work looked like it might be punished.
However, once half-time substitute Billy Kirkwood scored the second, Dundee was down and out. Sturrock made a great break down the right and, after Kirkwood shot and Narey header were blocked, United’s 12th man calmly tucked the ball home.
The game finished with United buzzing round Donaldson. and pivot Derek Stark volleyed home a Payne corner to complete a memorable afternoon for the home side.
DUNDEE 4-3 DUNDEE UNITED
PREMIER DIVISION 18 August 1989
This was a Derby match in which the usual script went awry. Deservedly leading by two goals after less than 25 minutes of
play, Dundee fought back to equalise before halftime and again came from behind after the interval to record their first home victory over us since 1985.
It all started so wellMaurice Malpas opened the scoring after 22 minutes as Paul Hegarty’s header fell into the United skipper’s path and he prodded home. Two minutes later we went two up. A Mixu Paatelainen cross fell to Michael O’Neill who steered the ball into the top corner.
Much to our angst, Keith Wright scored twice to level the game by the half-hour mark.
Early in the second half, Paatelainen put us ahead with a rebound goal, but Wright quickly equalized again. Worse followed when McBride’s netted the winner.

PREMIER DIVISION 31 JULY 1999
After no goals and no points from our two home meetings with our near neighbours the previous season, this was a very welcome way in which to open the new campaign. The game burst into life on fourteen minutes.
Hugh Davidson, making his debut, flighted over a corner which fell to Magnus Sköldmark who drilled a shot off the underside of the bar and into the roof of the net. At that stage United dominated proceedings, some 25 minutes elapsing before Dundee created even a half chance.
Gradually Dundee forced their way into the game and continued to come forward with menace after the break, culminating with an equaliser on 52 minutes.
A wayward Willie Miller shot was cutely controlled by Willie Falconer who
spun to curl in the equaliser from 14 yards.
Soon, however, we were back in control and the introduction of new Portuguese striker Joaquim Ferraz proved to be a master-stroke. The giant striker almost scored with his first kick and with the near siegelike conditions being maintained, Ferraz hit the outside of a post.
Rab Douglas was finally beaten five minutes from time when Ferraz rose above Maddison to powerfully direct a header on target which Douglas parried but couldn’t prevent crossing the line.
DUNDEE UNITED 2-2 DUNDEE
PREMIER DIVISION 28 JULY 2001
United faced Dundee at Tannadice on the opening day of the Scottish Premier League, marking the second time in three years they’ve met on this date.
after Jim McIntyre was fouled, but Charlie Miller’s effort hit the bar. Miller redeemed himself nine minutes later, scoring from a David Partridge cross. The visitors hit back almost immediately, Juan Sara latching onto a Jamie Langfield kick-out, taking a touch before firing it into the bottom right-hand corner, silencing the home fans.
Dundee who took the lead against the run of play as Romano hoisted the ball high into the box from out wide on the right, Sara nodded it down into the path of Gavin Rae who was arriving unmarked at the back post to slot home. Roared on by the home fans, United threw everything they could at the Dundee defence. With time ticking away and scoring opportunities fewer and fewer, Jim Hamilton popped up deep into stoppage time to bullet home a Jim Paterson corner.
United had a chance to lead with a penalty
FOCUS ON DUNDEE FC
Our neighbours from across the road return to Tannadice for this afternoon’s mouthwatering Premiership opener.
Dundee are just days short of going an astonishing 21 years without tasting success here. During that time, they’ve suffered two 6-2 defeats and a lastminute League Cup exit among their twelve winless attempts.
This term, however, the Dark Blues have started in devastating form, albeit against third and fourth-tier opposition.
The Premier Sports League Cup sectional ties saw them dismantle Bonnyrigg Rose 7-1 before following that up with wins over Arbroath and Annan. Last weekend saw the group wrapped up in style with ICT hammered 6-0 as The ‘Dee secured their place as seeds in the last sixteen.
With their 18 goals spread between eight different players, it’s clear that they possess goalscoring threats all over the park.
No stranger to the Tannadice dugout, , Tony Docherty arrives aiming to best his former club.
A midfielder who had a modest playing career, the 53-year-old is better known for his roles beyond his playing days. Assistant to Ian McCall at Falkirk, he moved to Tayside as part of the management team when McCall took up post here in January 2003. Taking up the role of first-team coach under Gordon Chisholm two years later, he also worked under Craig Brewster and Craig Levein whilst on United’s payroll.
A 2007 move to team up with Derek McInnes saw him named assistant manager at St Johnstone, Bristol City and Aberdeen before a spell at Forfar Athletic assisting Gary Irvine.
After more than serving his apprenticeship, he took up his first post as the main man at Dens in May 2023 and led the newly promoted side to their first top-six finish since 2015.
Undoubtedly the most important signing of their summer, Simon Murray returns to Dens following a loan spell there six years ago.
The 32-year-old striker began his career at Montrose but made just a solitary appearance before dropping to Junior level with Tayport. Rescued by Arbroath in 2014, his 18 goals in 25 matches earned a move to United, loaning him back to Gayfield.
The following season saw the Dundonian endear himself to Arabs for his tireless effort and work rate but only seven goals from 25 matches was a disappointing return. 18 goals the following term, including four in the playoffs, were overshadowed by his red card in the play-off final first leg against Hamilton didn’t help matters.
Since leaving, Murray has turned out for Hibernian, Bidvest Wits, Queen’s Park and Ross County, for whom he scored an impressive 23 times last term.
SEB PALMER-HOULDEN
The Bristolian striker started his career with hometown club City but hasn’t broken through at The Robins yet. He spent time on loan at Chippenham and Yeovil, establishing himself last season at Newport County with nine goals in 40 matches. He’s now loaned to a higher level, hoping to impress Ashton Gate before his contract expires next summer. With three goals in his first three Dundee matches, he’s one to watch this afternoon.
ETHAN INGRAM
The 21-year-old defender signed a two-year deal after being released from West Bromwich Albion. An England youth international, he spent last season on loan at Salford,
making 26 appearances. Having featured in every Premier Sports Cup fixture so far, he also scored at Gayfield in his second appearance.
CLARK ROBERTSON
The former Aberdeen central defender brings a wealth of experience with 350 club appearances for Aberdeen, Blackpool, Rotherham, Portsmouth, and Ashdod. However, a hamstring injury in a preseason friendly means the 30-year-old won’t be involved this afternoon.
JON MCCRACKEN
The former Scotland under-17 goalkeeper joined Dens permanently this summer after a fourmonth loan from Norwich City.
PLAYED FOR BOTH
JIM HAMILTON
A man of many clubs, Jim Hamilton’s enduring career spanned 17 years at no less than 12 different league clubs, featuring over 500 times and scoring 120 goals.
But analysing a breakdown of his statistics, it quickly becomes evident that his spells at the two Dundee clubs were his most prolific. Indeed, he made just five short of a century whilst with Dundee, his first senior club and just ten less when sporting tangerine.
Born in Aberdeen on February 9th, 1976, he started his footballing career at Keith under the tutelage of his namesake father, who was manager of the Highland League side at the time. He joined the Kynoch Park side as a raw teenager in 1993 but his talent was quickly spotted at Premier Division Dundee whom he signed for in February 1994.
Hammy didn’t have long to wait for his top team debut, the 18-year-old coming on as a substitute
for Morten Weighorst in the last home game of the season, making a fine impression in an enjoyable 4-0 win. Unfortunately for The Dee, they had already been relegated and faced the prospect of playing season 1994/95 in the First Division.
By the end of his first full season, he was a regular in the first team, playing 33 times, scoring 13 goals but The Dee fell agonisingly short of promotion.
One of those appearances was as a substitute in the B&Q Cup final against Airdrie at McDiarmid Park in November but there was disappointment for the Dark Blues who lost 3-2 in extra-time.
Hopes were high therefore that Hammy could push on the following season and help Dundee grab that elusive promotion spot and he started the 1995/96 season in fine form. Indeed, they reached the League Cup final and when the final against Aberdeen came around, Hamilton who had been an ever-present
in the side, was the top scorer with eleven goals.
Jim Duffy’s attacking side had high hopes for Hampden, especially after defeating United 3-2 at Tannadice the week before. Hamilton played the full ninety minutes of the final but the disappointing and nervy Dees lost 2-0.
Promotion hopefuls, Dundee had travelled to Hampden top of the league, but in its aftermath, the Dark Blues’ challenge petered out, finishing a disappointing fifth.
Consigned to a third year in the First Division football despite Hamilton’s 19 goal, which saw him finish as top scorer.
Included in his haul a brace against United at Dens, but it was United who ran out 3-2 winners. He hit another brace against United that knocked us out of the League Cup at the start of season 1996-97.
In the next round, he scored a last-gasp winner against Aberdeen at Dens,
and also in the Easter Road semi-final against Hearts, but the Jambos won 3-1. Hearts must have liked what they saw of the six-foot striker as they shelled out £250,000 in December to sign him. His time with Dundee however was his most prolific as a goal scorer, notching 39 goals in 95 appearances as well as winning the most Scotland Under-21 caps (11) in the Club’s history.
Having joined Hearts late in 1996, he enjoyed a successful spell in Gorgie, scoring 33 goals in his two-and-a-half years and winning the Scottish Cup in 1998. This caught the attention of Aberdeen, and he followed in the his father’s footsteps when signing for them in March 1999.
Hamilton cost £300,000, but his time at Pittodrie proved less productive as he made just 15 appearances and scored only once.
In the wake of Billy Dodds’ departure to Rangers just before Christmas 1999, United boss Paul Sturrock turned to Hammy to fill the void. Jim spent three years at Tannadice, appearing regularly, but never reached the goalscoring heights which had marked his time at Dundee and Hearts.
However, he did have his moments, and none more so than in his first start at Alloa Athletic in the Scottish Cup In February 2000. The Tangerines were trailing 2-0 at the interval and appeared on the threshold of a shock exit. Hammy came to the rescue with goals in the 56th and 80th minutes to salvage a replay. Though, it must be pointed out that he was twice denied by two great saves and hit the bar with a header. And for good measure, he scored the second goal as United stung the Wasps to the tune of 4-0.
However, his only league goal was from the penalty spot in a 2-1 defeat to Motherwell in the final home match of the season.
Unfortunately, he only found the back of the net twice the following season.
But it was his goal on the opening day of the 200102 season for which he will be most revered, given that it was a stoppagetime leveller from a Jim Paterson corner against Dundee at Tannadice.
In fact, emotions ran so high that afternoon it sparked an unwanted pitch invasion by United supporters. Five more goals were forthcoming over the first half of that season, but then the goals dried up.
Indeed, he went almost exactly a full calendar year without scoring before getting back on the goal standard, scoring both in a 2-1 win at Motherwell.
He found the net three more times with the last of his 17 goals coming in a 3-2 defeat to Hibs in the Scottish Cup which proved to be Paul Hegarty’s last game in charge.
A substitute in the 3-0 defeat at Celtic hands in the semi-final of the League Cup was followed by starting the Dundee derby at Tannadice which finished one apiece taking his United appearances to 85.
The following month, he was released and joined Dunfermline playing as an amateur due to complications with transfer regulations.
Thereafter his CV encompassed Ross County, Livingston (twice), Motherwell, St Mirren, Partick, Arbroath and East Fife. He spent one year at Fir Park in 2005/06 where he scored 11 times in 38 appearances before returning to Dunfermline for a second spell and played in the Scottish Cup Final with The Pars at the end of the following season.

MESHACK UBOCHIOMA
BECOMES TERRORS’ TENTH SUMMER RECRUIT!
A native of south-east Nigeria, the mercurial winger honed his talents in the local area of Onuimo, before catching the eye of Ligue 1 giants Paris St Germain. Aged just 17, Ubochioma headed for the French capital to partake in a trial, affording him his first taste of an elite-level environment as he shared an office with stars such as Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Marco Verrati.
United Manager Jim Goodwin gave his assessment on our new number 70, commenting:
“Meshack is another exciting talent to arrive from outwith the United Kingdom, following the captures of players such
as Vicko Sevelj, Kristijan Trapanovski and David Babunski - all of whom have demonstrated their quality in the early stages of their time with the club.
“His pace on the transition and unpredictability with
the ball at his feet perfectly complement his intelligent use of possession, and we hope he can replicate the impact he made on Hungarian football here.
“At just 22, Meshack also has the potential to
develop into a real asset for the club in years to come and we feel we have an apt environment in which to nurture his raw talents.
I’M SO EXCITED!
I’m so excited, it’s great to finally be here,” said a buoyant Ubochioma upon his arrival at the Calforth

ON THIS DAY
When researching this article, it reveals just how much the football calendar has changed, given the earliest a truly competitive match was played on this date was in 2001! This is because, until almost the end of the last century, the season started in the second week of August.
1975
United defeated Third Division Preston North End in a friendly at home which United won 2-0 thanks to goals from two talented Tannadice talisman Andy Gray and Paul Sturrock.
1976
United lifted the 1975-76 Forfarshire Cup courtesy of a 3-1 win at Tannadice. Henry Hall, Frank Kopel and Graeme Payne were the United scorers.
1980
With the first team set to play Spurs the following day, United’s XI comprised reserves and younger first-team players at Annfield Park to meet Alex Smith’s Stirling Albion who won 2-0.
1984
After a series of preseason games in Germany, it was over the border into Switzerland to face First Division Winterhur and with the hosts intent on defending, a goalless draw was inevitable.
1987
Goals from Paul Hegarty, Dave Beaumont and Kevin Gallacher secured a 3-0 win over Real Sociedad in a friendly at Tannadice watched by 4,618.
1988
Second Division Brechin
City proved a tough nut to crack as this first-round Forfarshire Cup tie ended goalless after extra time. United though edged through after a 5-4 win on penalties.
1990
The Tangerines’ mixture of youth proved too strong for Montrose at Links Par, United winning 3-1 with goals from a Michael O’Neill penalty, Christian Dailly and Darren Jackson.
1995
All five summer close season signings had a delayed start to their Tannadice debuts as this Friendly kicked off 67 minutes later due to a fault in the fire alarm system. When it did the 7,100 crowd saw Steven Pressley open the scoring, but Gordon Dirie levelled and Gordan Petric came back to haunt us.
2001
Despite the lack of goals, this was an enthralling encounter with no shortage of talking points and the stalemate outcome with hosts Motherwell about right.
2007
A last-minute David Robertson goal was the only goal of the game at Tannadice to give United victory over Aberdeen.
2009
United defeated Forfar Athletic 3-0 in a Station Park friendly. On target for the Terrors were Craig Conway, Johnny Russell and Joe Collins.
2022
A packed Tannadice audience cheered Jack Ross’s side to a 1-0 firstleg win over AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Conference League. Glenn Middelton was the marksman.
2023
The Tangerines set down a marker in the Championship chase with a 4-0 whitewashing of Arbroath at Gayfield. Glenn Middleton, Mathew Cudjoe-Anim, Craig Sibbald and Louis Moult got the goals, all of which came before the interval.
