SEASON TICKET REBATE OPTIONS

Dundee United supporters responded in great faith to our Season Ticket campaign, with numbers currently sitting over 5,000!

All of these season tickets were purchased at prices that included an option for a 10% rebate on the amount they paid for their season ticket. This was caveated upon the club playing cinch Championship football in 23/24.

The administration process of setting up this rebate scheme has proven a robust task and this will continue; staff are working through both the processing of season cards and rebate vouchers.

We can now explain the options available to all season ticket holders regarding this rebate scheme. Season ticket holders can:

· Use the rebate as a credit towards your 2024/25 season ticket. (Please note you will need still to apply for a voucher within the timeframe but will not be able to redeem it until March 2024 when the new season tickets go on sale).

· Use the rebate in our retail store on full-price items. (Please note this will be in-store only, is non-refundable and can only be used once. No change can be given).

· Use the rebate on full-price hospitality at Tannadice Park during the 23/24 season. Supporters who chose this option via the form will be contacted by the club direct in the first instance after the August 1 deadline and ahead of the September 1 -- December 31 opportunity period.

· Donate your rebate back to the club.

the gaffer

Obviously, we’re all disappointed to lose the match on Tuesday night. The two goals we conceded are very similar to the one against Spartans - both very avoidable and should be defended better.

Quite simply we need to be more ruthless in both boxes.

Again on Tuesday we created some good opportunities and got into some dangerous areas but it was just that final ball or final shot that was lacking. We wanted to give the fans something to cheer about for the first time this season but unfortunately on Tuesday, we shot ourselves in the foot.

We have to learn from these kinds of mistakes early on and make sure we eradicate them as we head into the league campaign.

I think we need to be realistic in that six points will not be enough to get out of the group. That being said we have to restore some pride after what’s been a poor start.

It’s been a positive month or so on the training pitch but ultimately it counts for nothing if we can’t showcase our ability in front of the fans on a matchday.

We’ve tried to be fair to the group in the last two weeks with changes. We’ve made six additions and we’re trying to make sure the whole group gets up to speed as quickly as possible. We have new faces and players returning from long-term absences so we need to watch we don’t pick up any needless injuries at this stage of the season.

This afternoon’s starting eleven will again show some freshness but we have enough quality in the group that it shouldn’t weaken the team.

It’s very early days and I think given time the supporters will see what we’re trying to do here.

I hope you all enjoy the match and get right behind the team!

the visitors

Similarly to ourselves, last season was a hugely disappointing one for the Blue Toon. It was a campaign of upheaval both on and off the park that ultimately culminated in relegation.

After 11 years in charge, United legend and Scotland’s longest-serving manager Jim McInally quit as the Blue Toon’s boss last November with the club sitting bottom of League One on seven points.

The task of filling his boots proved a tough one, with former Rangers and Aberdeen defender David Robertson then lasting less than four months in the post.

Club captain Ryan Strachan and midfielder Jordon Brown were placed in charge of the team in March, but the damage was already done and Peterhead went down having only won three of their thirty-six matches.

Jordon and Ryan who were appointed on a permanent basis just before the end of the season wanted to hit the ground running for their first season in League Two since 2017.

And in their only outing so far, prospects for the new campaign appear much rosier as they held Partick Thistle to a 1-1 draw and only just missed out on a bonus point being edged out 10-9 in a marathon penalty shoot-out.

previous cup clashes

The clubs have only met three times competitively and in three different competitions. The first of those was in the now defunct Dewar Shield – a competition between the winners of the Aberdeenshire, Forfarshire, Perthshire and Stirlingshire Cups. The Terrors triumphed 3-0 at Tannadice in February 1972 with Andy Rolland, Ian Mitchell and Paddy Gardner on target.

Prior to that, there had been one friendly way back in 1936, which ended in a 3-3 draw at their old groundRecreation Park.

In addition, the Club has twice sent teams up to play in testimonials. The first was in 1989 for Ali Buchan and a strong United side ran riot winning 8-0. By the time the match in aid of Scott Brown came round in 2001, Peterhead had just completed their first season in the Scottish League.

Again, United fielded a strong side, ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over the Third Division side.

Since then, there has been only two truly competitive clashes, details of which are as follows.

3 September 2016 – Challenge Cup Third Round

UNITED 3 (2) Charlie Telfer (1), Nick van der Velden (34) Tony Andreu (116)

PETERHEAD 2 (2) Rory McAllister (28 & 35)

Managers: Ray McKinnon and Jim McInally

Attendance: 3,520

10 October 2020 – League Cup (Sectional Tie - Group C)

UNITED 0 (0)

PETERHEAD 1 (0) Stephen Boyd (51)

Managers: Micky Mellon and Jim McInally

Attendance: Behind closed doors

PLAYED FOR BOTH Jamie Buchan

Of all the players who have figured for both clubs, there is no doubt Jamie Buchan made the most impact at both Tannadice and Balmoor Stadium.

Being the son of the outstanding Aberdeen, Manchester United and Scotland defender Martin, his pedigree was also enhanced through his grandfather’s playing career with Aberdeen and United in the 1940s.

Unsurprisingly, Jamie also began his career at Pittodrie coming through their youth system to make 62 appearances and scoring five goals for the Dons.

Capped 13 times for Scotland U21s, Jamie was signed by Paul Sturrock in July 2000 and made his debut in the opening game of the 2001/02 season – a 2-1 home defeat to Celtic. After a 3-0 defeat at Easter Road, Luggy resigned as manager and though United struggled, the midfielder enjoyed a good season, playing in 41 of the club’s 45 competitive fixtures.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, he only got his name on the scoresheet once, but it proved to be a vital one, scoring the only goal of the home game with Motherwell after the split in style! Collecting a loose ball in the centre circle, he drove forward, skipping past two players before unleashing an unstoppable shot past debut keeper Connelly from no less than 35 yards. It was his first and last goal for United and one to savour, especially given its significance as it kept United a point clear of bottom-placed St Mirren. And with the side winning the four remaining post-split games, United stayed up. However, Jamie wasn’t to play too many more games the following season, the last of his 48 appearances, being in a 6-1 home defeat to Rangers at Tannadice in September.

Finding himself out of favour, he put in a transfer request the following month and ultmately joined Partick Thistle in June 2002, spending a season at Firhill.

Due to red tape, a period out of football ensued before moving to Peterhead in July 2004.

At Balmoor, he accumulated 147 appearances over a period of three and a half years, scoring 15 times, switching to Montrose in January 2008.

The following year he joined Cove Rangers, then a Highland League club before retiring.

ROSS DOCHERTY

The club were delighted to secure the services of Ross Docherty on a two-year deal.

A combative yet technically gifted midfielder, Docherty began his career with Livingston after progressing through the youth system at Almondvale. A brief stint with Airdrieonians followed, before going on to enjoy spells at Somerset Park and Firhill.

Throughout his career, the 30-year-old has racked up over 150 appearances in the Championship and has led both Ayr United and Partick Thistle to the League One title as club captain. He was a key figure for the Jags last season as they defied the odds to reach the final of the cinch Premiership Play-Offs, narrowly missing out on back-to-back promotions.

And given his past leadership qualities, it came as no surprise that Manager Jim Goodwin handed him the captain’s armband, “Ross has a wealth of experience as captain of a side in the Scottish Championship. He is a leader who has a calming influence within the group, and he has displayed that quality thus far”.

KEVIN HOLT

A Dumfries native, Kevin Holt began his career with boyhood club Queen of the South.

After making the step up to the first team, the left-sided defender racked up over a century of appearances with the Doonhamers, securing Challenge Cup glory in the process in 2013 and scoring a sensational free-kick in a memorable 2-0 win over Rangers.

A stint with Dundee followed, whilst he also tested himself on the continent as he enjoyed two separate spells with Cypriot First Division sides Pafos and Ermis Aradippou.

Upon his return to Scotland, Holt settled with Partick Thistle and was a senior figure in the Jags’ against-the-odds charge to the Premiership Play-Off final last season.

He found the back of the net an impressive nine times, notching crucial goals against both Queen’s Park and Ayr United in the Quarter and Semi-Final of the Play-Offs respectively, whilst also getting on the scoresheet from the spot in a thrilling Scottish Cup clash at Ibrox.

Having amassed a wealth of experience across the Scottish pyramid as he closes in on 500 career appearances, the 30-year-old adds solidity and leadership to United’s rearguard heading into the 2023/24 campaign.

liam grimshaw

Born in the Midlands, Grimshaw progressed through the youth ranks with English Premier League side Manchester United.

However, his first taste of senior football came north of the border when he made a loan switch to Fir Park at the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign.

A positive temporary stint with the Steelmen laid the foundations for a permanent move further down the line, and Grimshaw would go on to cement himself as a fans’ favourite in Lanarkshire thanks to his tenacious, all-action style of play.

Throughout his time with Motherwell, the full-back, who can also play in midfield, made over a century of top-flight appearances and was an integral part of squads that made two domestic cup finals and secured European football.

Following his departure from the Well, Grimshaw put pen to paper on a shortterm deal with Greenock Morton in September 2022. The 28-year-old played every single league minute for the west coast outfit, who ultimately found themselves denied a place in the cinch Premiership Play-Offs by goal difference on the final day.

jack walton

After stints with both Bury and Bolton Wanderers during his younger years, Walton made the switch to Barnsley as a 15-year-old.

His stellar and consistent performances with the club’s youth sides saw him gain international recognition, as he was included in England’s U18s squad in 2015.

The shot-stopper’s inevitable breakthrough into the first team at Oakwell soon followed before he cemented himself as the club’s number-one ‘keeper towards the end of the 2019/20 season.

An impressive run of five clean sheets in nine Championship matches for Walton helped the Tykes defy the odds to retain their second-tier status against the odds. The following campaign, he made 24 appearances as Barnsley reached the semi-final of the promotion play-offs.

The talented 25-year-old was snapped up by Premier League-bound Luton Town earlier this year and was part of the squad which succeeded in getting the Bedfordshire-based outfit’s historic promotion over the line.

Walton, heading north of the border with a rich pedigree from multiple years of regular dependency across various levels of the English game, is ready to immediately integrate himself within the first-team setup at Tannadice.

ollie denham

The defender made the switch to south Wales after a lengthy stint within the youth ranks at Manchester United, as he turned down a contract extension at Old Trafford aged 18 to test himself within senior football.

An aggressive, predominantly right-sided defender, Denham made his Bluebirds debut in February 2022, given the nod to start in a crunch Emirates FA Cup clash against Liverpool.

His fearless and mature display at Anfield earned him the right to be included in every single one of Cardiff’s matchday squads between that fixture and the end of the 2021/22 campaign, and he began to nail down a place in the backline at the business end of the season.

Furthermore, the 21-year-old’s form heading into the summer saw Wales boss Rob Page take notice, and he was called up to the Dragons’ squad which contested a World Cup Play-Off Final and four UEFA Nations League matches.

Denham looks to further his development in a first-team environment whilst adding another brick in United’s defensive wall for the upcoming cinch Championship campaign.

louis moult

The most recent arrival Louis Moult agreed a one-year deal last Tuesday.

Born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent, Moult made his top-flight debut for the Potters aged just 17 following a prolific career with the club’s academy sides.

In the years preceding his Premier League bow, the frontman enjoyed loan spells with numerous clubs across the English pyramid, but it would take a switch north of the border to find his feet in the professional game.

He arrived in North Lanarkshire in August 2015 and immediately hit the ground running, finding the net 18 times in his first campaign in claret and amber. Moult garnered talismanic status at Fir Park as his goalscoring exploits continued, most notably bagging four in a Lanarkshire Derby, two in a shock victory at Parkhead, and notching a brace in the Viaplay Cup Semi-Final against Rangers - with the latter being nominated for the 2017/18 PFA Goal of the Season.

By the time he departed Motherwell for Championship outfit Preston North End, he boasted a strike rate of 0.48 goals per match. The 31-year-old brings a new dynamic to Jim Goodwin’s frontline and made his debut as a second-half substitute in Tuesday evening’s Viaplay Cup match against Partick Thistle.

club news

Dundee United are pleased to announce that James Robertson has been appointed the club’s new Finance Director.

The 32-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Tannadice after spending the last five and a half years at the Arnold Clark Group, working as a Branch Accountant in their Autoparts division – the largest parts distribution centre within the group.

The fully qualified Chartered Accountant graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with an Honours Degree in Business & Management.

Upon joining the club, James said: “I’m really excited to have joined Dundee United and get my teeth stuck into an industry I am passionate about.

“I’m used to working in a high-pressure environment and I’m excited to play a key role in achieving our strategic vision of being competitive yet sustainable.”

Chief Executive Luigi Capuano added, “I’m delighted to welcome James to Dundee United.

“We conducted a very thorough recruitment process and James demonstrated an impressive track record in his previous roles within a multinational organisation.

“He is someone who can cope with the high demands of a fast-paced industry with the objective of delivering results and we’re excited to have him on board”.
