WELCOME "The times they are a-changin’..."

Bob Dylan's fifty year old song, inspired by Scottish folk ballads in response to a changing moment in time, has never seemed more appropriate. The world seems to get stranger – and often more scary – with every passing day. Over the next six months, Dundee Rep Ensemble will be interrogating a cultural influence which still holds so much sway over us: the American Dream.

The Stars and Stripes Season kicks off with one of the greatest American plays, Death of a Salesman.

The story of Willy Loman and his family burns with intense emotion. We aim to break your hearts with ensemble members Billy Mack and Irene Macdougall as Willy and Linda Loman, live music composed by Nikola Kodjabashia and an elemental design from Neil Warmington (Further Than the Furthest Thing in 2012).

Our ensemble are joining forces with actors from Poorboy Ensemble to create a new play set in Dundee. Sandy Thomson, Artistic Director of Poorboy, will write and direct Monstrous Bodies (chasing Mary Shelley down Peep O'Day Lane). With Britain at war with the USA, the play explores Mary Shelley's time here in the city, just before the teenage author wrote Frankenstein. Intertwining Mary's story with a young woman's in modern day Dundee, it's a vibrant tale of fearless women.

Our community tour will take on the disconcerting resurgence of far-right rhetoric with a touring production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht, adapted by Scottish playwright Alistair Beaton. Set in 1930s Chicago, the play is a parable of Hitler's rise to power. Coming to both the Dundee Rep stage and a Community Centre near you.

In February, Scottish Dance Theatre return to their home stage with a première of a new work, TuTuMucky, by hip hop choreographer Botis Seva.

Presented as part of a double bill with Dreamers, Fleur Darkin and her ensemble ensure that Dundee remains the place to be for cutting edge dance.

Our ever ambitious Creative Learning team have been working with theatres across the UK on a new commission. The Blue Road is premièred in June.

Our programmer, Viktoria Begg, has left no stone unturned in her quest to offer you compelling and diverse shows over the next six months. We have local heroes (Shaper Caper and The Scaffies), comedic thinkers (Jon Ronson, Mark Thomas and Limmy), and big-belting Musical Theatre (The Dolls and Buddy).

We are also proud to be the only venue north of the border to be presenting Room, an exciting new novel adaptation from your National Theatre of Scotland.

Add into the mix a jam-packed Children's Theatre Festival during the Easter Holidays, some of Scotland’s hottest theatre-makers joining us for Gallus Theatre Week in March and even a bit of Agatha Christie in July, I'm confident there's something of interest to you in the coming months.

The year is 1978, and Britain is experiencing social and political turmoil with a strong threat of nationwide strike action and disruption for many public sector workers. For one group of Dundee cleansing workers, it’s business as usual... for the time being anyway.

Theirs is a sometimes thankless job of hard graft, sweat, grime and filth which they combat with serious bouts of heavy drinking and merciless exchanges of banter, mickey-taking and black humour. From the high hopes and expectations of a nation entering the World Cup in Argentina to the harsh conditions of an unforgiving winter, follow The Scaffies as we step back in time to a culture long gone.

Inspired by photographer Richard Drew’s iconic images of a man falling from the World Trade Center during the attacks, Within This Dust has been presented to sell out audiences around the world including Sao Paulo, Berlin and New York City three times.

Multi award winner Mark Thomas returns to where he first started to perform, a red wooden shed in Wakefield, the labour club, to celebrate its 50th birthday. The show will involve the audience (in a nice way) to recreate the shed and its inhabitants.

Multi award-winner Kieran Hurley weaves a picture of a familiar city at its moment of destruction, asking what would we do if we found ourselves at the end of our world as we know it.

The clues are in its pages...

Everything is flat, pressed, squished. A dusty, musty smell mixes with the scent of old lavender and a string lifts a flap to reveal a hidden door.

Narrated in English with French sentences from the puppets, the show is a fun and heart-warming bilingual piece of theatre, accessible to all non-French speakers.

Slowly, page-by-page, the scrapbook becomes the window into a secret world and a curious life unfolds before us – but who was Josephine Bean?

Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin is fourteen and hasn’t met the man who will make her Mary Shelley yet. She hasn’t done anything yet. But her genius for finding trouble pitches her into a world of politicians, revolutionaries, lunatics, American fugitives and the ladies of The Glassite Church Floral Tea Committee.

After watching cartoons as a young boy, Jack found that they provided him with a gateway into communication and now, as a young adult he has created his own imaginary world: Cartoonopolis. Follow a host of well-known characters as well as some created in Jack’s imagination – like the evil Mayor Sharp – on an adventure to save the city!

Told alongside this theatrical fantasy world is a real story about living with Jack and his autism... Of how, with his Mum and Dad, we see the family’s highs and lows and their ability to pull together through adversity.

Lewis Bray is an emerging actor and writer. This is his first play performed by himself to outstanding reviews as part of Liverpool Everyman Playhouse Ignition Project and now touring.

SINDERINS Plus support

Sat 3 June, 7.30pm With three singer-songwriters and an array of instruments both conventional and outlandish, Sinderins is a band that defies categorisation. Although the term 'space folk' has been coined in an attempt to describe their sound, their songs also throw elements of Jazz, Blues, Hip Hop, Rock and World Music into the cauldron.

Following the official release of their debut album in 2016, Sinderins have honed their skills even further by playing a host of diverse venues around the country, from London's The Groucho Club to the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where the band's performance at the Blue Tent was recorded live for BBC World on 3.

A swarthy batch of young cronies made up from the parts of Dundee’s recent hot bands. The line-up of instrumentation they employ hints at the unusual sound they have harnessed – bouzouki, mandolin, harmonium, double bass, autoharp – the list goes on.

With the musicians alternating between microphones and instruments to meet the demands of each song, their live shows afford the audience not only a unique sonic experience, but an impressive spectacle as well.

Previously adapted by Donoghue for the screen, the film won Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. Kidnapped as a teenage girl, Ma has been locked inside a purpose built room in her captor’s garden for seven years. Her five year old son, Jack, has no concept of the world outside and happily exists inside Room with the help of Ma’s games and his vivid imagination where objects like Rug, Lamp and TV are his only friends. But for Ma the time has come to escape and face their biggest challenge to date: the world outside Room.

THE RESISTABLE RISE OF ARTURO UI

When Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, Brecht made the decision to flee his home country with his young family, rather than stay and be victimised for his political beliefs. It proved a shrewd move, as the Nazi party fed the fears and injustices felt by the population, marching them towards World War II and the Final Solution.

Written when Brecht was a refugee in Finland, The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui charts Hitler’s rise to power as a parable play. Arturo Ui is a wannabe gangster in 1930s Chicago, very firmly in Al Capone’s shadow. But with a bit of muscle from his companions and a few “acting” lessons, a man can run any town. And maybe the town next to that.

August 1972 – Idi Amin had a dream and ordered the expulsion of all Asians from Uganda under a 90-day deadline. From Uganda to Dundee, Jaimini Jethwa grew up in Scotland knowing nothing about her homeland until she found herself being haunted by Idi Amin. She started to run but he was everywhere.

YDance (Scottish Youth Dance) is the National Dance Organisation for children and young people in Scotland.

Each year since 2006 the Project Y company has brought together 24 talented young dancers aged sixteen to twenty one from across Scotland who have a unique opportunity to work with top professional choreographers to develop their talent and create new work.

Performed by one woman to a live urban soundtrack, through the street sounds of Dundonian dialect, The Last Queen of Scotland is Dundee playwright Jaimini Jethwa’s homage to her city – her ‘love letter to the D'.

Here’s a little more information about the services we offer.

Full Wheelchair Access to the Bar, Restaurant & Foyer areas. Please contact Box Office if you need wheelchair accessible seating in the auditorium as spaces are limited.

Audio Described Performances allow patrons who are blind or partially sighted to access performances.

Touch Tours usually take place approximately an hour and a half before the audio described performances and provide an opportunity for blind and partially sighted patrons to explore the set, props and costumes before the show through a combination of verbal communication and touch.

Touch Tours can be arranged if you are not attending the audio described performance.

BSL Interpreted Performances allow patrons who are deaf or for whom British Sign Language is their first preferred language access to performances.

Infra-Red System (for enhanced hearing).

We offer two different types of system.

1) A headset for patrons who would like the sound on stage amplified. The headsets are also used for the Audio Described performances.

2) A necklace used to amplify the sound of the stage for patrons who use hearing aids.

Captioned Performances are similar to television subtitling and give deaf, deafened or hard of hearing patrons access to performances.
