Dundalk Golf Club’s Brendan Lawlor is set to tee it up with pros after winning an invite to the 2019 KPMG Trophy, a European Challenge Tour event which will be played in Belgium from August 29 to September 1.

The final day of the recent Belgian Knockout tournament on the European Tour featured the G-GOLF Knockout which was a nine-hole stroke play knockout match between two golfers with disability.

Lawlor, the current World Number Three in the World Rankings for Golfers with Disability (WR4GD), defeated home favourite and WR4GD Number Five Adem Wahbi by three shots at

“It’s a fantastic accomplishment, we’re both winners today but I’m getting the prize, it’s really good,” said Lawlor after his victory. “I’ve played with Adam in a number of events on the EDGA tour and he’s a great person but I was delighted to beat him in front of a big crowd and book my spot for the challenge tour event.

Town’s first outdoor defibrillator

Dundalk’s first outdoor defibrillator has been installed outside the costcutter shop on Clanbrassil Street. The life saving machine was installed two weeks ago

outside the shop and is a joint initiative between the First Responders, Costcutters and the BIDS office in Dundalk.

Costcutter manager Gavin Hearty got the idea

for installing the defibrillator after hearing about an incident on Clanbrassil Street on New Years Day where a man collapsed and died See Page 18.

Dundalk Golf Club’s Brendan Lawlor is set to tee it up with pros after winning an invite to the 2019 KPMG Trophy, a European Challenge Tour event which will be played in Belgium from August 29 to September 1.

“The EDGA tour has opened up so many doors for me and I’ve got to play golf all over the world which is a dream come true for me. Many of the proevents are beginning to showcase players from the EDGA tour as well so our tour is beginning to get great exposure,”

added Brendan.

Lawlor also played with the pros in the proam on the eve of last month’s Betfred British Masters where the European Tour announced two tournaments for Golfers with Disability. The 36-hole EDGA Scottish Open and the 36-hole EDGA Dubai Finale will be played over the weekends of two of this season’s biggest Rolex Series events, the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club and the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Gerard Roe (left) with service users of RehabCare at the Clan na Gael field The service users of RehabCare concluded their ‘Louth GAA Kick a Point Fundraiser’ on Monday as they visited their final destination in Dowdallshill.

Gerard Roe from RehabCare organised the fundraiser

and along with service users from RehabCare they visited every GAA ground in the county. While there they kicked a point before getting back into the van and travelling to the next destination.

In all they visited

38 grounds over four Mondays starting back on the May 13 at the Dreadnots.

The aim of the fundraiser is to raise money for the Horticultural Unit in the centre and although the event has now ended all donations

are still welcome.

All funds raised will remain within their services in RehabCare Dundalk.

Donations can also be posted to: RehabCare, Horticultural Unit, Mounthamilton House, Carrick Road, Dundalk, Co Louth.

Brendan Lawlor fans to follow, while television coverage of both contests will form part of the world feed broad-

cast, and the winner in Scotland will also take part in the main prizegiving ceremony.

Louth carers set to benefit from grant

Up to 3,109 carers in Louth will benefit from the Carer’s Support Grant, Fine Gael Councillor John McGahon has said.

“The Carer’s Support Grant is worth €1,700 and is available to all carers providing full-time care to an older person or a person with a disability, regardless of their means or social insurance contributions.

“My colleague, the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty, TD, has confirmed to me that up to 3,109 carers in Louth will benefit from this grant from today.

“Furthermore, carers who are providing care for two or more people will receive a grant in respect of each person being cared for, to take account of the additional costs and challenges of providing care to more than one person.”

The Carer’s Support Grant is paid automatically to carers who are receiving Carer’s Allowance (whether full rate or half rate), Carer’s Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance. Other full-time carers who are not receiving any of these payments may also apply for the Carer’s Support Grant.

Minister Doherty has allocated €218 million for the Carer’s Support Grant this year which will benefit some 116,000 carers nationally.

Cllr McGahon continued: “Another very positive development for carers in recent years is the funding provided by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, as part of the Dormant Accounts Action Plans, to support training for carers.

“Under the Dormant Accounts Action Plan 2018 in excess of €1.7m has been allocated to 12 projects across the country which will provide training, information and related support services for family carers,” he added.

Liam Reilly elected Chairman of Louth County Council Fianna Fail councillor Liam Reilly was re-elected as chairman of Louth County Council at Friday’s meeting in the council chambers.

The annual general meeting of Louth County Council takes place in June of each year and sees councillors vote for a chairman, vice-chairman and also representatives for various committees and

boards.

Liam made history last year when he emulated his father Tommy by being elected as chair and he held on to that position again on Friday as he saw off the challenges of Sinn Fein’s Antoin Watters and Independent Maeve Yore.

last month’s local elections despite a boundary change which saw him run in Dundalk South rather than Ardee.

Meanwhile Cllr Oliver Tully from Drogheda was elected as the new vice-chair with the Fine Gael man taking over from his party colleague Maria Doyle.

At the end of May, 27 pupils from St Francis National School, Blackrock, made their First Holy Communion in Blackrock Church. There followed a reception in the school hall, hosted by the Parent’s Association of St Francis. Fears that DkIT will miss chance for Technological University status Fears that Dundalk IT will miss a historic opportunity to become a Technological University grew this week as it was revealed that DkIT is now one of only two Institutes of Technology in the country yet to apply for Technological University Status.

The Technological University Bill enacted by the Dáil last year allowed Institutes of Technology a route to University status with the Dublin Technological University becoming Ireland’s first Technological University in January.

Planning for three other Technological Universities are in advanced stages covering Munster, the South East and Connaught-

Ulster.

However despite overwhelming staff support in DkIT to pursue Technological University status Senior Administrators are yet to engage in the process.

According to DkIT Teachers’ Union of Ireland chairperson Kenneth Sloane the lack of interest amongst the institutes administrators in pursuing university status has become ‘incredibly frustrating’.

“Given the excellent researchers and highly qualified lecturers and support staff we have in DkIT we know we are in a very strong position to achieve University status.

“However it is incredibly frus-

trating that the Institute’s Administration have neglected to pursue University status despite an overwhelming consensus amongst staff that this is essential to protect the future of DkIT. Achieving Technological University status requires at least two existing IoTs to merge and with an ever diminishing number of potential partners remaining, the inaction of DkIT’s current Administration could see Dundalk’s chance of hosting a University campus slip away.

“Consequently staff will continue to call upon Management to start the process of pursuing University status as a matter of urgency.’

A Toberona resident has hit out at council officials for leaving three houses in the area unoccupied for months at a time when there is a severe shortage of houses both locally and nationally.

Luke Martin stated that Oldbridge in Toberona is a great community with lovely people but unfortunately the area has recently become a target for vandals due to a number of boarded up unoccupied houses in the estate. Luke questioned why the houses have remained unoccupied for so long given the current housing crisis.

“These houses have been lying idle for a number of month snow and it is no surprise

that they have been targeted by vandals. There are three two-bedroom houses down here boarded up for month snow while at the same time you have single men and women are crying out to the local authorities for housing. It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Why on earth it takes so long to get these houses back in use again is beyond me. As well as being an eyesore these vacant boarded up houses are attracting vandals and that’s what we saw over the weekend. There is broken glass and broken slates all outside the house and as well as that the ESB box has been broken and there are wires exposed.

DkIT signs Cargotec partnership Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with Co. Louth manufacturer of Moffett Truck Mounted Fork Lifts, Cargotec Engineering Ireland, part of HIAB. The MOU provides a strategic framework for greater collaboration between both organisations in the areas of workforce training, graduate talent pathway development, joint sponsorship initiatives and research & innovation projects.

Over the course of three years, both parties have agreed to explore bespoke training opportunities for Cargotec staff in areas such as operations development, data analytics and supply chain management.

They will also investigate the feasibility of developing an accredited part-time management training programme for Cargotec’s operations leaders aimed at assisting the company to retain and nurture talent.

The MOU also outlines an intention to create more defined career

pathway opportunities for DkIT graduates with Cargotec Engineering.

The agreement sets out formal mechanisms for Cargotec to engage with future graduates via student projects, on-campus visits and the possible introduction of a graduate programme for DkIT graduates.

Both organisations have committed to scoping out opportunities for increased research collaboration. Areas of mutual interest for applied research projects include the internet of things, electrical vehicle systems, and Computational Fluid Dynamics, among others.

Derek Murdock retains House Committee Cup Derek Murdock retained the House Committee Cup on Sunday when he shot a six under par 66 to win by three clear shots from Conor McCaughey on a day when only three players managed to break 70.

McCaughey (5) took second overall on countback after both himself and Paul O’Callaghan (11) had come home in 69.

O’Callaghan took Category 1 with Gareth Halpin (14) and Men’s Captain Pat Davis taking the other two category prizes.

Caolan Rafferty finished third in the St Andrews Links Trophy in Scotland at the weekend. He shot rounds of 69, 65, 71 and 66 to finish on 17 under, three shots

behind the winners, Jake Burnage of England.

North East coach Declan Toal leads by example

North East Runners coach Declan Toal flew the flag for the club at the Leinster Championships in Track and Field in Tullamore. The Tullamore Harriers track is notorious for windy conditions but Declan decided to push the pace from the start to ensure a true run fast pace race. He was rewarded with second place overall but Gold in his age category (over 45). His time has been his fastest for 20plus years in 16.02mins just two seconds behind Dublin’s Paul Flemming On the road racing circuit, Declan was a popular winner of the Cooley 10km two weeks ago when he again pushed the pace from the start to finish in an excellent time of 33.50mins with Laura Mathews making it a double for NER A.C. in winning the ladies event in 39.16mins which placed her fifth overall from the 144 finishers.

Laura Mathews was again first of the NER Ladies in third place in a time of 18.37 mins. Cliodhna Daly 20.49 showed a welcome return to good form with Anita Bolton in 21.35mins.

Congrats to Zoe Nevin on completing her first marathon in 4:21hrs with Niall Fergus tackling his first half marathon and finishing in a great time of 79 minutes.

News Swimming Club enjoy success at National Aquatic Centre

There really was something in the water as Aura Dundalk Swimmers took their place on the medals podium at the Leinster Division 1 Swimming Championships held at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Skye Kasozi took the Silver medal in the U12 50 Meter Freestyle event securing a personal best time of 31.52 seconds while Evelyn Donnelly (16) landed a silver in the 15&Over 50m Breaststroke.

The club also had a number of swimmers making the finals over

the weekend to record top 10 finishes. On Friday night Jake Logan and Patrick Harmon swam in the first finals of the Championships for Dundalk Swim Club. Jake recorded a fifth in the U12 100m Breaststroke while Patrick recorded a ninth place finish in the 17&Overs category of the same event.

Later that evening Evelyn Donnelly finished seventh in the 1516 100m Breaststroke Final, Eoin Harmon posted a PB of 30.26 in the 15-16 50m Butterfly to finish ninth before Skye landed her Silver in the 50M Free. Earlier in the

day Rebekah Friel secured her first Irish Division 1 Summer National qualification time in the 100m Breaststroke when she posted a PB of 1min 31.20 secs.

Dundalk were strongly represented in the final of the Girls 1314 50m Freestyle when Izzy Bach and Eliza Logan took to the blocks.

Evelyn Donnelly rounded off a very successful evening for the Club with their eighth appearance in the finals on Day 1 when she secured her second top 10 finish of the day also in the 50m Freestyle.

Last Sunday was a red letter day for the local Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Martial Arts Community in Dundalk when coach Cormac O’Hanlon was promoted to the prestigious rank of Brown Belt.

Cormac who began training in BJJ in 2009 has been the lead Instructor at Team Torres Dundalk since October 2014.

Award for Ardee school Monastery NS are once again celebrating success after their attendance at the Louth County Council GROW Awards 2019.

GROW stands for Green, Renewable, Organic and Waste-free; all elements that are central to the Monastery NS environmental ethos.

The GROW awards celebrate the incredible environmental work being done in schools throughout the county. In attendance at the awards to represent Monastery NS. were teachers Sheila McKeown and Claire McCabe with 5th class pupils Philip Ross, Seán Haughey and Adam Keenan.

Monastery NS were thrilled to comfortably retain their five star status at the awards thanks to the efforts of their dedicated environmental committee and

An even greater honour came when School of the Year for the Municipal District of Ardee was awarded to Monastery NS. This is the third time the school has received this award.

The pupils were delighted to proudly carry the trophy back to their fellow pupils and were met with huge cheers of celebration.

The school has been blessed with a fantastic new committee for 2018/19 put together by Ms McKeown, environmental coordinator.

School teacher Ms McCabe also joined the committee this year and has been a wonderful asset, helping the boys in many aspects of their environmental work.

Both Ms McKeown and Ms McCabe have worked tirelessly with the environmental committee, supporting them in their work

towards their ninth Green Flag for Global Citizenship: Marine Environment.

The committee has also received the backing of their ever-obliging caretaker Philip Rogers.

Pupils took part in a competition to show off their environmental interests in order to earn their place on the Committee. One sixth class pupil, Jamie Callaghan, stood out unequivocally to the GROW Awards Judges as the Junior Environmentalist of the Year 2019 for the Municipal District of Ardee. Jamie is a leader amongst his peers when it comes to environmental issues and has been a fantastic addition to the committee. The school is very pleased to have Jamie’s efforts recognised

DkIT hosts annual Film Showcase of students’ Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) hosted the annual endof-year Film Showcase for work produced by BA (Hons) in Film and TV Production students, in the IMC Cinema, Dundalk on Thursday May 16. The four-hour long showcase contained works produced by students from first to final year, arranged in genres from short films, documentaries and music videos, along with TV format dramas and a comedy panel show.

Lorcan Dunne, Lecturer in TV Studio and Film Production commented that the showcase was a huge success and the turnout was great. “All the staff and lecturers that have been involved in the making of these projects are extremely proud of the students and appreciate and acknowledge the time and effort that went into creating them. DkIT students hosted the annual Film Showcase

Those who attended had the opportunity of experiencing the world premiere of the third year industry standard short fiction films, with themes ranging from the moon landing, to the homelessness crisis, mannequins, paranormal activity and grief.

The audience was also in for another surprise as for the first time this year, fourth year students Major Projects were also screened as part of the showcase, all of varying formats

and created with specific TV broadcast slots and funding models in mind. They included a new comedy panel show featuring comedian Joe Rooney, as well as a documentary about the burning of the Wildgoose Lodge near Ardee, a new police drama set in the future and a touching drama exploring the effects of dementia on a family.

Lecturer Sarah McCann from the Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music stated that the annual film

showcase is a great opportunity for students to get feedback and recognition from the public for the work they produce.

This allows students to be more critical and more confident of their work and mimics the environment of a real life film premiere. The feedback from the audience was fantastic, they couldn’t believe the level of standard of the work that our students produced they were truly blown away,” she added.

Dundalk’s first outdoor defibrillator is unveiled

Dundalk’s first outdoor defibrillator has been installed outside the costcutter shop on Clanbrassil Street.

The life saving machine was installed two weeks ago outside the shop and is a joint initiative between the First Responders, Costcutters and the BIDS office in Dundalk.

Costcutter manager Gavin Hearty got the idea for installing the defibrillator after hearing about an incident on Clanbrassil Street on New Years Day where a man collapsed and died from a heart attack. According to Gavin there were no businesses open at that time on and therefore no access to a defibrillator.

“Unfortunately for that poor man there was no access to a defibrillator which could have saved his life. There are a number of defibrillator’s around the town but unfortunately they are all inside shop premises so when the shop closes they are un-

available for the general public. I started thinking that there needs to be one available 24/7 and got the idea to try and make it happen.

I began making a few enquiries and got in contact with Martin McElligott in BIDS to talk about funding and he put me in touch with Barry Hennessy from the First Responders and it came about fairly quickly after that. My own dad passed away from a heart attack three years ago so this is an issue that is close to my heart,” explained Gavin.

“The equipment is secured by a code for security purposes but it can be accessed at anytime by simply asking a member of staff to open the box.

“If the shop is closed you can contact emergency services and they will give you the code there and then. It’s a very easy machine to use and the machine will talk you through all the steps of using the defibrillator,” added Gavin.

Martin McElligott from the BIDS office stated that he was delighted to get on board

with the initiative having been contacted by Gavin and revealed he plans to install more around town in the near future.

“We were delighted to get involved with what we feel is a very important initiative.

“I think it’s essential to have a defibrillator in Dundalk Town Centre which is available for the general public on a 24/7 basis. We feel it’s in an ideal location and we are currently working on trying to get a second one installed in Park Street,” explained Martin.

The senior Louth Camogie team played Wicklow in the Minor Leinster Camogie Final at O’Moore Park Portlaoise on Sunday. With all senior clubs in the county represented (St Anne’s, St Kevins, St Brides and Mattock) Louth got off to a good start getting points on the board first and dominating for good periods of the first half going into

the dressing room with a three point lead at half time.

The second half was a competitive affair but Wicklow set about chipping away at their deficit with renewed vigor and intent bringing it back to an even match 36 minutes in. With both teams demonstrating great skill and determination it made for a thrilling game between the teams. Both

teams competed hard for every single ball with very little between them but Wicklow got a 6 or 7 minute purple patch between 45 and 52 minutes and got themselves in front with two goals and a couple of points which went unanswered leaving Louth with too much to do when they refocused for the last few minutes.

Louth’s Lithuanian community celebrates

The Louth Lithuanian community will be celebrating Midsummer’s Day with a family fun Fair to be held at Dundalk Racecourse from 11 am on June 22. This is an event for everybody to come

along to and have a nice family day out. The Lithuanian community have extended an open invitation for anybody to come along and enjoy their traditions.

Activities will include storytell-

ing, barbecues, searching for the magic fern blossom, greeting the rising midsummer sun and washing the face with the morning dew. There will be lots of games for children.
