The spring is back in the Dundalk step after a hugely positive week for the town on a number of different fronts.

Over the past number of days the feel-good factor in the area has been palpable with a number of significant events.

The revamped Market Square was officially opened on Friday and then seen in its full glory as Jedward played to thousands of fans on a sunny Sunday afternoon, a day after the Tain March stopped off in the town centre.

Fire in Carroll Village

Senior assistant chief fire officer Joe Lumsden said the fire was reported at approximately 10.45pm on Monday evening.

“We got a call from the Eastern Regional Control Centre and there were three fire engines despatched to the scene within five minutes of that call” explained Joe. “There was fire and smoke coming from a second storey apartment and the building was immediately evacuated with approximately forty to fifty residents fleeing the building “We entered the building via two ladders and we recovered one male casualty who was in the apartment where the fire had originated. Official transfer of Vodafone jobs takes place

THE transfer of 290 Vodafone call centre jobs from Ireland to the UK officially took place on Monday the communications giant has confirmed. Fifty employees will be in place in the Newry call centre from next week while both Irish call centres will remain

open for a period until the individual preferences of current employees are addressed.

Last week staff in Dublin and Dundalk were issued the terms of their redundancy following weeks of negotiations between the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and the mobile phone operator and the

call centre staff provider.

CWU members voted for industrial action in April, forcing Vodafone to extend the May 8 deadline for the transfer of jobs. A month of talks ensued before a deal was struck.

Terry Delaney from the CWU said that they worked hard to get the best redundancy terms they could for

their members and that they will continue to condemn Vodafone for the decision to outsource jobs.

Vodafone staff have secured a redundancy package that includes six weeks pay for every year of service.

Some will continue to work with the company in their Mountainview call centre however it is clear that the

positions in the Dublin call centre will be limited and competition for posts will be high.

Vodafone staff have been advised they must indicate the position that they would like to take up as soon as possible and if unsuccessful, Newry or unemployment will their next step.

nent employees were offered a package of two weeks pay for every year worked as well statutory redundancy payments, depending on legal entitlements. Those on fixed terms contracts a termination payment of €1,800.

Those who do transfer to the Teleperformance call centre will have their current

contracts, whether Rigney Dolphin or Vodafone, fully protected. And fixed term Rigney Dolphin contracts will be offered permanent positions in Teleperformace, subject to satisfactory performance. But as yet, the number of people choosing to take up the posts in Newry remains unclear.

Olympic Flame visits Dundalk schools

It was an exciting start to a Wednesday morning as pupils and staff from a number of national schools in Dundalk, were given an amazing opportunity to witness the procession of the Olympic Flame as it paid a visit during its journey from Belfast to Dublin.

This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic flame at close quarters and according to St Josephs National school principal, Marcella O Conluain, the significance of the event was not lost on the pupils.

“We were all very appreciative when we were told that the flame was visiting our school. We only found out at 8:30 on Wednesday morning so we immediately texted all the children’s parents and we set up a

stage immediately” explained Marcella.

“The children have been doing different projects relating to the Olympics over the past few months so they all knew how significant it was that they were get-

ting to see the flame at close quarters “We have a proud tradition of sport in our school and an event like this will only encourage children to get involved in athletics and ensure they keep fit and healthy

Laura who works as a carer for people with disabilities says she has always been interested in volunteering work and decided on helping out abroad after speaking to representatives in the Appletree Foundation.

‘I do quite a bit of voluntary work around Dundalk, and I was interested in doing some volunteering abroad.’

“I got talking to people in the Appletree Foundation and they told me about the ‘Development Perspectives’ overseas projects.’

“I have to raise money to go on the trip and I’m hoping that people will

come out and support me as I organise various fundraisers over the next few weeks” explained Laura.

Laura currently has three events in the pipeline starting with an auction in the Marshes tomorrow morning (Thursday) where she will be selling a signed Louth football jersey.

The fundraising drive will continue on June 23 when Laura organises a table Quiz in the Morning Star cafe on Park St. A table of four will cost €20 and if you want to go alone it will cost €5.

Finally, fearless Laura will be at the Crowne Plaza on the July 1 where she will abseil down the side of the hotel in an effort to raise funds for her

trip abroad.

Methadone clinics waiting list

The HSE have asserted that there is only a four to five month waiting list for access to methadone clinics in Dundalk after it was claimed in a national newspaper that the waiting list was as long as 12 months in the area.

The HSE said that the information was based on waiting lists as of March 2011.

There are three methadone clinics held per week in the county, two in Dundalk with an average of 80 clients attending them each week.

Once a client is referred to the clinics the wait time to get into the programme is about five months.

There is an open referral system, so GPs and other professions can refer to the methadone clinics. GPs assess the clients and deem if they are suitable to avail of the programme.

Once it begins the methadone prescription is issued by the GP and the client is advised to attend at specified community pharmacies where methadone is administered as prescribed.

The wait time could

be reduced if the numbers of trained GPs in methadone prescription increased.

The HSE said the situation would improve if more GPs were active in this regard and the North East Drugs Task Force is actively seeking the involvement of additional community based GPs in the prescribing of methadone.

A spokesman said “We are constantly reviewing our services in order to ensure we are meeting the community needs.

and as use stabilises throughout the EU, it continues to increase in Ireland.

The demographic of users in the county is largely young men, with the numbers ever increasing.

Dundalk still has a needle exchange programme that reports those who use the service as being mostly men in their 20s and 30s who are proactive and conscious of the dangers they are in.

However it provides only a snap shot of the problem as they can only distribute to people over 18 years old.

Cub Scouts keeping busy It has been a busy time for the Cub Scouts with Buíon Setanta Scout Group and the culmination of this was the Investiture of seven Cub Scouts and two Cub Scouters.

As part of the One Programme there are nine Adventure Skills, each of which have nine levels, which the young person is introduced to and works on throughout the year.

The Adventure Skills include Air Activities, Backwoods, Camping, Emergencies, Hill Walking, Pioneering (constructing items from wooden spars) and three water based activities.

The seven new Cub Scouts from Buíon Setanta were presented with their Levels 1 in Hill Walking, Camping and Emergencies recently. A number of the young members are already working on Level 2 and

Short film showcase at DkIT A showcase of selected films created since the advent of the BA & BA(Hons) in Video & Film Production will take place on the outdoor screen at Market Square, Dundalk on Saturday June 16 from 7 to 9pm as part of the Tain Summer Festival .

Despite the early hour and the inclement conditions, a large crowd lined the Border on Wednesday morning of last week to witness the historic crossing of the Olympic Torch into Co Louth.

The ceremony itself may have been relatively straightforward, but the significance of the occasion was huge.

Not alone was it a chance to witness the symbol of the global Olympic movement, but from a local point of view it was another indication of the huge progress made by the Peace Process in recent years.

People of all ages from both sides of the Border gathered at Carrickarnon to see Wayne McCullough hand over

the torch to Olympic gold medalist, Micahel Carruth, accompanied by local school children just before 7am.

The ten children from Louth were David O’Hare, Pádraig Begley, Emmet Woods, Tommy Olowookere,

Bryan Knipe, Sophie Courcier, Caoimhe Wallace, Niamh Murphy, Sarah Cairns and Kristina Saroka.

The event was witnessed by chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, Sebastian Coe, before the Torch was taken to Dubln by car for a daylong celebration.

Michael Carruth, the 1992 hero, revealed afterwards: “It is fantastic, the torch is what is good about sport. It is a fantastic occasion for everyone, north and south of the border.”

‘Come Down The Crowne’ abseiling SAINT Patrick’s Scout Group, Dundalk are organising their fourth annual ‘Come Down The Crowne’ abseil on Sunday July 1 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk.

Mark Dearey, who along with Constance Short, Ollan Herr and Mary Kavanagh, brought a Supreme Court action in an attempt to stop Thorp opening in 1994, said that the closure was a boost for Dundalk.

“It is great news that by 2018 Sellafield will stop reprocessing nuclear waste and turn its attention to decommissioning. There are still issues that need to be addressed in relation to storage of radio-active material but this really is a very positive step.”

“We had 3500 people in the Square for the concert and everybody I’ve been talking to since has said they had a whale of a time. The icing on the cake for us was the fantastic weather and it helped contribute to what was a great day for Dundalk”.

The screening of the Ireland versus Croatia game also proved to be a big hit with the public.

Finally in what was an unprecedented week of good news for the town, Prometric announced

that the company has exceeded — in just six months — its jobs plan for all of 2012, raising its Dundalk-based workforce to 52 professionals in test publishing, software engineering, business analysis, project analytics, executive and project management, human resources, finance and accounting.

New coastal cycling path North Louth is set to benefit from a new cycling route after funding was granted for a 6.2km cycling coastal path from Omeath to Carlingford.

The project will receive a total of €687,000 and is one of 16 separate cycling projects built across the country over the coming years amounting to an additional 334 kilometres of cycleway as part of the National Cycle Network.

The planned cycle path will run along an old railway line between Greers Quay, Omeath and Carlingford, with future potential for this route to form part of a

32km route from Dundalk to Carlingford and on to Newry.

The announcement by Public Transport Minister, Alan Kelly, outlining a €7m investment programme for cycle routes which included the Omeath to Carlingford path was greatly welcomed by project leader Kevin Woods, Innovative Committee, Louth Economic Forum.

‘This is the very essence of an area working together and what can be achieved.

The local landowners were extremely supportive when I approached them and understood the benefits that this would bring to the area”, he said.

Took handbag as a prank A 30-year-old man took a handbag as a prank mistaking it belonged to another person. However, despite extensive efforts he was not able to recover all the property, including a charm bracelet of great sentimental value to the owner, Dundalk Court heard.

the recovery of the bracelet and the return of all the property or to raise compensation to ensure the injured party was not at a loss.

the handbag under a table at the Office Nite Club, Earl Street on December 18 last and was taken by the defendant.

Solicitor Conor McGuill said that the defendant removed the handbag from where it was. He travelled to England to meet with a person to get the property back, but only met with partial success.

Call to sign up for Relay for Life

Dundalk’s Relay for Life committee have called on the people of County Louth to join them once again in helping to raise vital funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

The hugely successful event which is now in its fourth year raised a very impressive €112,000 for the ICS last year and they hope to equal if not better that total this year.

The children of St. Francis NS Blackrock dressed in green on Tuesday June 5 to mark World Environment Day, and to remind people of the importance of caring for the planet.

The children looked at Rainforests in particular, and discussed various ways they could do their bit - choosing products made from managed forests, re-using items made from for-

est materials and choosing products made from alternative materials.

The pupils at St. Francis NS are no strangers to the eco-challenge. They were the proud recipients of a second Green Schools flag for their work on energy conservation this year, having previously earned a Green Flag for Litter and Waste Management.

Dundalk Leader 13th June 2012 Imagine how exhausted you would be having just completed a marathon.

A gruelling twenty six mile slog in what many consider the ultimate in endurance tests.

Now imagine running that marathon having just completed a 112 mile cycle and a 2.4 mile swim.

This is what Dundalk’s Bryan McCrystal did last month as he completed the Lanzarote Ironman competition in a very impressive 9 hours and 24 minutes finishing 12th overall and best of the Irish in what is regarded as one of the toughest ironman courses in the world.

Bryan, a former footballer who played youth and reserve team football for Leeds, first got bitten by the triathlon bug back in 2007 when he went to see an event back Castlewellan.

“Initially I’d committed to running the Dublin marathon in 2008 as a way of keeping fit after my football career ended due to a knee injury” explains Bryan.

“I completed that in less than three hours.

I enjoyed running the marathon but I was fed up with running alone so I joined the local Setanta Triathlon Club and it’s all kicked off from there really I suppose.

“I made the decision to race professionally as I was achieving the same times as the pro guys so I thought I may as well go for it. My full time job is as a jeweller in Baldwins Jewellers but I’ve been taking the triathlon seriously for the

past while and I probably train about 12-14 hours a week.” says Bryan.

People say you have to be mad to take part in a triathlon but for me it’s a bug at this stage. When you’re out on the course, your body is aching and you’re battling with your

mind trying not to give up.

“You see and read about athletes having mid-race meltdowns and you wonder will it happen to you. It’s tough to keep going but you just think about all the sacrifices you’ve made and you don’t want to let down family and friends who have supported you.”

As Bryan freely admits, swimming is the weakest part of his triathlon. He tends to lose time to his rivals during the swim but his prowess on the bicycle enables him to make back all of this time and more over the 112 mile cycle.

“When I get on the bike I just chase, chase, chase.

It is without doubt the strongest part of my triathlon. For the moment I’m just really enjoying competing with the professionals and last week’s race in Lanzarote was a great confidence booster.

“I don’t know where It’s going to take me but I’m relatively young in the game as the best triathletes tend to peak in their late thirties.

“But as I say, it’s a bug and I enjoy the buzz when I’m out on the road. I aim to keep on improving and keep on competing.

Faster, better and stronger. That’s the plan.”

Extension approved County Louth VEC has been given the go-ahead by the Department of Education and Skills to make arrangements for the construction of three new classrooms at Bush Postprimary School.

The school’s enrolment figures have risen significantly over the last number of years and this has placed considerable demands on current accommodation levels at the school. This trend is projected to continue.

Dr. Pádraig Kirk, CEO of the VEC, welcomed this latest news stating that, “the school’s projections for first year enrolments over the next number of years indicated a steady increase in numbers. Given that current accommodation levels were already under pressure, it was necessary to commence planning now for additional accommodation needs. I wish to compliment the Department of Education and Skills for moving swiftly with Co. Louth VEC to fast track this latest extension at Bush Post-primary School”.

Prometric announce details of growth at official opening Prometric marked their official opening in Dundalk on Thursday last with details of expansion in the town.

Minister of State, Fergus O’Dowd, TD, joined Prometric Inc. President and CEO Michael Brannick and IDA Ireland to announce continued jobs growth in Dundalk.

Thursday’s announcement serves as a significant milestone for the US-based company, which marked its official opening with a brief ceremony.

Prometric announced 100 jobs

over three years in 2011 and since then the company has exceeded its jobs plan for all of 2012, raising its Dundalk-based workforce to 52 professionals in test publishing, software engineering, business analysis, project analytics, executive and project management, human resources, finance and accounting.

To date, Prometric has made a talent investment of €2.5 million and €800,000 in construction of its global test development operations centre.

A Science Fun Day was held in in the school hall and parents and friends were invited to attend. Pupils from third to sixth class displayed some of the science activi-

ties they have been involved in during the year. All pupils, from junior infants to sixth class, had the opportunity to get involved in hands on science activities. There was a great buzz in the school hall as pupils had fun demonstrating the activities to each other.

This is the second year the school has achieved the award.

It is hoped that by being actively involved in science investigations and experiments, pupils will develop a lifelong interest in and love of science.

Dundalk Stadium will be open for visitors on Sunday June 17th which is Show Day and the members of Dundalk Show Society Ltd look forward to welcoming everyone to the 121st Show where there will be a packed programme of events for all with special emphasis on being a fun filled family day out.

Shows like County Louth Agricultural Show help to preserve traditions handed down through generations which otherwise could be lost forever and

they also help to bridge the urban rural divide.

Entries are now being sought for the 2012 Co. Louth Agricultural Show. There are many classes for Cattle, Sheep,

Horses and Ponies, Dogs, Arts, Crafts, Horticulture, Home Industries,

Photography, Baking and Flower Arranging. There are also classes

for children and those with special needs. Winning a rosette at the show adds value to an exhibit and winning a cup is the icing on the cake for many. Cups and

trophies are also presented in different sections.

Drove off without paying An 18-year-old Dundalk man who admitted driving off without paying for €181 worth of fuel from three local filling stations, received a nine month jail sentence which was suspended.

The case against Martin Maguire of Rockfield Court was outlined in February last at the local court which heard he hadn’t the money to pay for the diesel. The car he drove

bore false number plates, but a Garda recognised him from viewing CCTV footage at one of the stations.

Judge William Hamill put back the charges, along with a further count of handling stolen property relating to the false plates, and also two counts in respect of a separate public order incident. He requested a probation report and an assessment of the defendant’s suitability to

do community service, as well as providing him with the opportunity to pay back the money.

Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly said at Wednesday’s sitting that the defendant paid compensation.

The filling station offences took place at the end of May and early June last year at Maxol on the Avenue Road and also Castletown Road, along with Mace in Castlebellingham.

A check into the number plates disclosed that they were allocated to a blue Volkswagen Golf stolen from the Finnabair Industrial Estate.

The public order counts related to an incident where Maguire was observed fighting with two other males at Mizzoni Pizza, Park Street on February 3 last. He was very drunk and aggressive and was arrested.

ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE

Aston Martin have given the Aston Martin V8 Vantage chassis some tweaks inspired from the Vantage S – including a quicker steering ratio, bigger brakes and 10 mm wider tyres. They have even added Hill Start Assist (HSA) for more precise control on steep inclines.

At the face there is a lower bumper – complete with

aerodynamic splitter which houses a larger air intake that feeds the engine and front brakes. At the rear a diffuser creates added drama and function, while sculpted racederived side sills complete the look.

These technical and styling changes have been applied to both the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Coupe and Roadster models.

The hi-spec V8 430 bhp Aston Martin Vantage ‘S’ which is fitted with the Sportshift™ II close-ratio seven speed automated manual transmission as standard. It also features a sports exhaust system unique to the ‘S’. It features a unquie motor sport inspired carbon fibre detailing and a hand-stitched leather interior plus a fully integrated satel-

lite navigation system, developed in conjunction with Garmin, is now fitted as standard along with Bluetooth and cruise control.

The V12 Vantage remains unchanged, powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine which produces 510 bhp with a top speed of 190 mph and 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds.

NEAR MISSES The A.A. has released a list of the 12 main causes of near misses on Irish motorways.

NEW KIA CEE’D First unveiled at this year’s Geneva Show the all new cee’d has just gone on sale here. The new cee’d model range will start the 5dr model in the coming weeks, the SW model will follow in September and the 3dr will arrive in January of next year.

More sophisticated, more efficient, more refined and with a more engaging driving experience than its predecessor, new cee’d is expected to build on the success of the original model, further establishing Kia as one of the leading automotive brands in Europe.

The model

line for new cee’d in Ireland will comprise of three trim and engine choices .Trim levels comprise entry level TX, mid-level EX and top of the range Platinum. The TX will be available in 1.4 petrol and 1.4 D and 1.6 Diesel, the EX in 1.4 and 1.6 diesel whilst the top of the range model will available only with the higher powered diesel unit.

All model variants come with a high level of standard trim. The TX features Bluetooth, Audio Remote controls, air-con, trip computer, electric mirrors and six speed transmission. The EX

( the most popular choice for customer ) also includes16” Alloys, Cruise Control, flex steering system, all round electric windows, front fogs, LED lights front and rear, leather covered steering wheel an rear parking sensors .

The Platinum model adds a host of other features including 17” Alloys, leather upholstery with heated front seats and driver seat memory, Smart Park Assist, Panoramic Sunroof, Navigation System, heated leather steering wheel, privacy glass, smart key entry and rain sensor front wipers.

Safety as usual is a priority and the car has been built

to achieve a 5 Star NCAP rating. Standard on all models are ESP (Electronic Stability Program), ABS (anti-lock braking system), BAS (emergency Brake Assist System), HAC (Hill Assist Control) to prevent roll-back, VSM (Vehicle Stability Management) and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal).

Each new cee’d is fitted with six airbags as standard – front, front side and full length curtain. Pedestrian safety is improved with the adoption of collapsible headlamps, a stiffer lower bumper lip, and shock-absor bing structures in the hood and its hinges.

The three engines on offer on the Irish Market are the 1.4 petrol, 1.4D and 1.6 D .The 1.4 petrol @ 99hp has a CO2 of 139 and falls into Band B for road tax .The 89hp 1.4 diesel unit falls into the A Band ( 109 CO2 ) as does the 126 hp 1.6 diesel unit that returns a miserly 100 CO2 return.
