parents staged a walkout on September 5th in protest at the unexplained withdrawal of Irish medium education at Coláiste Lú, where students had up to that point been receiving immersive Irish language education in all subjects.

Students and parents marched from Coláiste Lú to Louth Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB) on Chapel Street, where they handed in a petition signed by all parents asking that Irish language education be reinstated immediately.

At the time of sending this release, four weeks into the new school year, most students are still being taught one

subject through Irish, which is Irish.

LMETB finally responded to parents request for a meeting last week, after receiving legal correspondence from the parents’ council. That meeting is due to take place this week, but the larger concern remains that LMETB have attempted to ‘deGael’ Coláiste Lú without notifying a single parent of this major change in policy and parents cannot see any genuine attempts to reinstate this policy as soon as is needed.

Comhairle na Túistí Coláiste Lú (Coláiste Lú Parent’s Council) has received tremendous support from the public, media, Irish language

organisations and local elected representatives since this issue arose in late August. The parents have also received support from all local TDs. Last week Louth TD, Gerry Adams, publicly committed his support for the cause and has attended meetings with the Minister for Education and LMETB to try and assist in achieving a resolution.

By Paul Byrne Eve McCrystal added yet another gold medal to her ever growing collection thanks to a dominant victory in the time trial at the UCI Paracycling World Championships. Eve has formed a magnificent partnership with Katie-George Dunlevy and the duo enjoyed another successful World Championships taking home a gold and a silver from Emmen in the Netherlands.

In Para-cycling the stoker (Katie George) is the rider with the visual impairment sitting on the back of the bike, with the pilot (Eve) steering the bike. Since joining forces in 2013 the duo have improved each year and along the way have picked up a number of world titles including double gold in both Italy and South Africa over the last couple of years as well as gold and silver in the paralympics in Rio back in 2016.

The highly decorated Irish pair retained their rainbow jerseys in style averaging 45.612km/h for the 31.2km course, which gave them an emphatic winning margin of 55 seconds over nearest challengers New Zealand.

George then returned later on in the week to defend their road race crowns which they won in both 2017 and 2018 but missed out by the narrowest of margins as the New Zealand pair beat them by half a tyre length in a dramatic finish.

According to Eve the pair were delighted to return home with two more medals to add to their ever-growing collection.

“We worked so hard over the summer and it gives us huge satisfaction to see the improvements on the track. I feel we are definitely getting stronger as a pair and I was actually a bit shocked by how much we beat the New Zealand girls in the time trial. It was just one of those races

where we both cycled at our maximum potential and that resulted in a very good performance which was good enough for gold.

“We just missed out on gold in the road race but we’re not too despondent as it was a really close race and for us it probably wasn’t hard enough.

We would have preferred the course to be a bit more hilly but it wasn’t to be and we’re happy coming home with gold and silver,” stated Eve. Eve also paid tribute to coach Neill Delahaye who helped the duo get ready for the world championships and revealed that the pair’s sole focus now is for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo next year.

Coláiste Lú is the only Irish medium school in the North East region, and the only one between Balbriggan and Belfast. The loss of the school would be a major blow to the region.

With the Archery Target Nationals last weekend, the outdoor season for Target Archers comes very close to an end and all that now remains is the final of the All Ireland Series, which will be held later this month. The club is now turning its attention to field for the coming

weeks, before heading indoors.

In trying conditions Éamonn shot well, seeding in first place and winning the Bronze medal in the Individual category.

Christina - after a long absence - shot really well, making it to the Bronze medal match and coming fourth in the Individual category, with Adria, Deirdre and Brendan all being knocked out in the quarter finals. Éamonn and Christina went on to compete in the Mixed Team Event and came away with the Bronze medal.

Also competing that weekend, but in Field Archery was CúChulainn’s John Keenan.

John, multiple medal winner in the World Masters Games in NZ and Switzerland, has had a terrific outdoor season at home this year.

Last weekend he won the Northern Ireland Open Masters 1440 and 720 Combined Championships to add to the All Ireland WA Field Mas-

ters Championships, NI Open Masters Combined Target and Field Championships and also the Northern Ireland Open Masters 3D Field Championships which he had won earlier this summer.

Members will be competing next, in Field Archery at the South East Challenge which is a 3D competition where the archer must guess what distance they are from each target.

Next up for the club is the Irish Field Nationals in Enniscorthy and the Finals of the All Ireland Championships in Dublin where the club is expecting to do very well. Finalists include CúChulainn’s Éamonn Rogers, Deirdre Rogers (compound) and Brendan Forde (recurve).

St Louis Transition Year students spent a week at DkIT

St Louis get taste of college life No sooner was the TY Class of 2020 back in St Louis last week than 20 of them were gone again - to DkIT for a week of intensive immersion in an Entrepreneurship Programme designed especially for them.

The students spent a week in DkIT in different departments learning about the generation of an idea, through scientific and engineering knowlegdge to commercialisation. The tasks completed involved skills such as team work, innovation and problem solving. Colman Ledwith, Head of Department of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering explained: “The purpose of the week is

to show the girls just what is on offer here in DkIT. They get a chance to work on their communication, interpersonal and leadership skills, all while designing and creating a commercial product. Ecouraging girls into Science and Engineering fields by exposing them to it at this age is also behind this programme. We are very happy to continue our links with St Louis again this year.”

one, from the very first day, and this year is no different. I look forward to further positive links with both DkIT and others to enhance the teaching and learning offered to our students here in St Louis Secondary School,” she stated.

Students who attended the course got a feel for college life as they moved through the Engineering and Science buildings, and saw first hand the facilities available.

They each had to make a presentation in front of their peers and mentors at the end of the week. All agreed it was a wonderful start to a busy Transition Year calendar.

Golfers travel west for Barton Shield Call to provide All roads will lead to Westport for Dundalk Golf Club members on Friday for the All-Ireland Barton Shield semi-final against Rosses Point with the winners advancing to an afternoon final against either Warrenpoint or Limerick.

It is hoped that as many members as possible will make it to Mayo to cheer on the team as they bid to go one better than last year when they lost to Athenry in the national final.

Josh Mackin second appearance in the colours of Maynooth University proved memorable when he won a play-off to claim the R&A Student Summer Series at Carton House last Friday. He should rounds of 74, 70 and 69 to finish on 213, three under par, and it took an eagle on the last by Jack Broun to force a play-off but Mackin subsequently won. Eoin Murphy finished 20th.

Three days after his Walker Cup exploits, Caolan Rafferty was in Lahinch as part of the Ireland team hoping to win the Home Internationals for the fifth time in six years. They had

Caolan and his foursomes partner Tiarnan McLarnon won their matches against England and Scotland while Caolan won his singles matches against England and Wales to finish the week with four points from a possible six.

as Caolan’s cousin Kyle finally got a day when it all came together last Wednesday as he shot an impressive 42pts to win the Open Singles competition. The five handicapper also claimed the best gross accolade.

The annual Dungreen Cup, which is a long standing friendly gents competition held annually between members of Dundalk and Greenore Golf Clubs

takes place on Thursday, September 26, in Dundalk commencing at 12.04pm. The time sheet is now open on BRS system and cards must be collected in the Pro Shop. There is no entry fee but a donation €5.00 is recommended with all monies raised going to The Birches.

available in the Proshop during the day and in the bar in the evening. The Annual presentation of prizes to juveniles for summer competitions will be held after the Adult & Child competition at 7pm in the clubhouse.

There will be a small contribution required towards the cost of food and soft drinks which will be provided on the evening.

Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has said the school bus system is flawed and is leaving families with no way of getting their child to school.

Breathnach commented: “My office has been inundated with calls and emails from parents who have been told there is no place for their child on a school bus. This includes those eligible for the School Transfer Scheme and those eligible for a concessionary ticket.”

“Many parents who paid for a place months ago have now been told the place is not available and they will be refunded. Children with a bus ticket have been told they can’t get on the bus, it’s a farcical situation.”

“Speaking as a former teacher, a common-sense approach is needed. If there is not enough space to bring kids to school, a bigger bus should be provided, or additional buses provided. I have contacted the School Bus section of the Department of Education on behalf of many families but there has only been generic and vague responses given. The Minister for Education needs to intervene immediately to ensure no child is left behind.”

Businesses prepare for UK exit Business owners in Louth are being given the opportunity to continue their preparations for the UK’s exit from the EU at a special information session next week.

The Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation are inviting SME owners and managers to a free Information Session on Monday, September 23 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Dundalk.

Chamber meet to help promote local business

Dundalk Chamber met with Aidan McKenna, Regional Director and Deirdre Craven of the Regional Executive Enterprise Ireland last week.

The chamber took the opportunity to outline its thoughts and to listen to Enterprise Ireland on the question of the North East.

Pat McCormick spoke about the DkIT’S role in encouraging entrepreneurship and in particular the successful start-ups in Health Care (Nova Leah) and engineering.

The campus was developing a number of clusters and had seen a number of other success stories such as StatSports, Digiweb and others Paddy alone spoke of the M1 Corridor and

our belief that this was the tool that could attract businesses to the region and particularly Dundalk. Paddy hoped that Enterprise Ireland would see the region as the logical place for UK and NI companies who an EU location need post Brexit. He also emphasised the local attractiveness as a second location for existing businesses, particularly those chocked

by Dublin.

Sean Farrell Vice President Dundalk Chamber indicated that retail was faring better than expected and that there was still confidence despite Brexit.

This was down to the falling level of unemployment and the increase in population.

Paddy Matthews suggested the need for

both office and incubation space.

He mentioned a number of empty buildings that could be converted.

Aidan and Deirdre responded by indicating that they were happy to work with the Chamber and were actively using the data gathered by the M1 Corridor to explain to both clients and potential clients the advantages of the region.

Both stated that the designation given to Louth with two Regional Centres, Dundalk and Drogheda together with the proximity of Newry meant the area is receiving its proper attention.

The meeting concluded with all sides agreeing to support each other in every way they can.

Caolan claims Scratch Cup Caolan Rafferty has won the Dundalk Scratch Cup for the third time in four years after dominating proceedings over his home course today.

The 26-year-old Walker Cup player followed up a bogey-free five under par 67 in the first round of the 36 hole competition with a four under par 68 to finish on nine under and five clear of Warrenpoint’s Colm Campbell in second place, “It’s a good feeling,” said Rafferty afterwards. “I played really well and as Conor (Purcell) said I didn’t miss too many shots today. I put my-

self in good position off the tee and then hit my approach shots to within makeable positions. The birdies I did make, I chipped in twice, but the rest of them were pretty much straight-forward. Overall, it was pretty solid.

“I’m still annoyed about the only bogey I made. I tried over the last two years to go around without a bogey but I bogeyed 16 last year and 14 this year for my only bogeys of the tournament. It would have been nice to go 36 holes without a bogey but that’s the joys of it and a win is a win at the end of the day,” revealed Caolan.

The only other sub-70 round in the afternoon came from course record holder and last year’s runner-up, Gerard Dunne of Co Louth, who shot a three under par 69 to finish in third place overall, six shots adrift of the winner.

Dundalk’s Eoin Murphy bounced back from a four over par 76 in the first round to card a two under par 70 and finish inside the top ten while his senior panel teammate Conor Curran improved by five shots on his first round when carding a second round 72 to finish 16th on 149, two places ahead of Aaron Grant.

Kevins on top in epic Camogie final Conference on voting In another epic battle St. Kevins Camogie team secured the double when they saw off St. Brides in the Senior Championship Final in Stabannon on Saturday evening. Having already won the league final earlier in the year, St Kevins have now taken their sixth Senior Championship in a row.

On a fine bright afternoon, the curtain was raised by a fantastic U 12s Final, where St Kevins young guns emerged victorious over their counterparts from Castleblayney in a tight and well fought game.

The senior final saw St Brides enjoy the better of the first half as they went in leading by 0-6 to 1-2.

The Philipstown girls picked up the pace in the second half and an early goal proved decisive as they went on to win by 2-6 to 0-9.

na Duffy paid tribute not only to her own side for their work and effort over the year but also to the St Brides team for a very well fought game.

Cliodhna also brought her focus to the high calibre of players on both sides and her hopes for the early part of next year when players from these two and the other clubs in the county will combine their efforts for the first time in many

years when Louth will enter a senior team in the Inter County League.

A conference exploring the extension of presidential voting rights to Irish citizens living outside the State will take place in Dundalk later this week.

Three keynote speakers have been confirmed for the event, which takes place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Thursday September 19 at 7.30pm.

Rights activist, Laura Harmon, will be joined by barrister Mark Bassett and Colin Harvey, professor of human rights law at Queen’s University Belfast, for the conference, which will be chaired by Dundalk councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú.

Mr Bassett said he hoped the event would attract interest from a wide range of people and there will be an opportunity for questions afterwards.

One of the current issues around the extension of presidential voting rights is the fact that it is clear now a referendum on the matter will not take place in October, as previously indicated by the government.

Mr Bassett said: ‘There is an onus on those who are interested in this to keep pushing the government to ensure that this referendum takes place as soon as possible.

Professor Harvey said: ‘This is a relatively modest constitutional reform that would give welcome and meaningful recognition to Irish citizens outside the State. Ireland’s current approach is deeply problematic and this change would be in tune with international and regional trends.

Stadium Students bond ahead of a very busy schedule ready for the new season Management at Dundalk Stadium is making final plans for the resumption of horseracing at its Racecourse Road venue after a Summer break during which significant work was carried out in preparation for the commencement of its Autumn Winter season which starts on Friday September 20.

The seven race meeting (first race 5.25pm) begins a run of 35 such events to be held over the coming September to April period.

During August over 50 tonnes of Clopf fibre was blended into the surface as recommended by Martin Collins one of the world’s leading authorities on artificial all weather surfaces.

Other enhancements currently in progress will see further improvements made to what chief executive, Jim Martin calls ‘the spectator experience’ with the installation throughout the stadium of new HD televisions and video walls. Other minor improvements and upgrades to facilities are also in progress in preparation for the Autumn, Winter series.

There was adventure and activities in abundance recently for a group of Leaving Certificate students from St. Vincent’s school as a large group of Sixth Years took part in a team building field trip.

The day out was organised to promote group bonding as the girls reach the half-way point in their Senior Cycle.

Year head Helen Daly explained: “Reaching Sixth Year is an enormous milestone for our students, and we wanted to give them an opportunity to come together as a year group in a fun and relaxed atmosphere,

before the pressure of study and exams begin.

The Leaving Certificate and the journey towards third level can cause so much stress and worry and we felt it was important to remind the girls that taking time out to enjoy themselves and cherish friendships is also vital.”

The thrill-seekers spent the day at Celtic Adventures in Clogherhead, where they took part in a wide range of events. These included body boarding, tag archery, stand-up paddle boarding and the hugely popular ‘knock your block off’ game amongst other activities.

Skeleton is found during roadworks A skeleton and pottery were amongst items discovered on Church St. during work on the Clanbrassil Street and St Nicholas Quarter rejuvenation scheme.

Archaeologists were called to the scene to inspect the findings and Louth County Council representatives have stated that the find-

ings could potentially delay work in the area.

The skeleton which was found close to Ma Brady’s restaurant is most probably related to the nearby St Nicholas Church of Ireland graveyard according to council officials. They also stated that the archaeological findings could po-

tentially delay the project but they would have to wait and hear back from the archaeologists.

The work on Clanbrassil Street and St Nicholas Quarter was originally due to be completed this November but at the Dundalk Municipal District monthly meeting which took

place in St Peter’s school in Dromiskin last week a council official stated that works were ‘running behind at the minute’.

Should the work on Clanbrassil St./Church St. not be completed by the end of November there will then be a moratorium through December to allow

for the traditionally busy Christmas period. Work would then resume in January.

Work began last January on the €5.7m facelift for Clanbrassil St and St Nicholas Quarter and represented a significant investment to improve the heart of the town.

Sinn Féin councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú attended the Sruthán House garden party on Saturday where he encouraged service users to engage in the ongoing HSE consultation regarding the future of the service.

“The campaign is ongoing to keep Sruthán House respite facility in Dundalk open and available to service users. I have been in regular contact with service users since Sinn Féin held a public meeting in July regarding the HSE

decision to close the service,” he stated.

“In late July Gerry Adams TD and I met with CHO8 Disability Manager Jude Ó Neill. We urged him to reconsider the decision to close Sruthán House and to engage with the people using the respite service there.

“Service users have received a letter which states that this consultation will conclude on September 30 and at this weekend’s garden party I encouraged the people I met to make their

voices heard by contributing to the consultation,” Cllr Ó Murchú stated.

He pointed out that there was a huge attendance at the garden party by service users, their families and supporters of Sruthán House, and many conveyed their fears that this vital service could still be withdrawn.

Louth celebrate All-Ireland win

Louth claimed their third ever All Ireland Junior Championship thanks to a well-deserved 3-13 to 2-6 victory over Ulster champions Fermanagh. Louth’s captain Kate Flood led by example, scoring 1-8 in total as Darren Bishop’s talented young side powered away from Fermanagh in the second half.

This was Bishop’s first title as manager having succeeded Michael McKeown who passed away just days before Louth’s Leinster Final with Kilkenny which they would go on to win in his honour. Unfortunately, Limerick proved too strong for Louth in last year’s All Ireland Final but Bishop’s talented side made amends in Sunday’s final as they overpowered Fermanagh to claim their third Junior Title.

Louth were 1-6 to 0-2 up at the break with Flood scoring 1-5 of that total and they put the game to bed in the second half with further majors from Niamh Rice and Lauren Boyle ensured victory for the

St Vincent’s annual 5K

The St Vincents Secondary School annual 5K walk/ run will take place on Sunday September 29 starting at Noon from the school gym and all proceeds will go towards a multipurpose outdoor sports facility.

Prizes include €200 for the first male and female, three month Felda membership for second male and female, while third place will win a spa voucher for the Four Seasons Hotel, Carlingford.

First female and male students under 18 will win €100, there is a Marshes voucher for second and Shop Local voucher for third.

The event is a chipped race, with walkers welcome and this year there’s even a prize for the best dressed dog.

Pre-Registration will take place from 9am to 4pm on Friday September 27 in St Vincent’s and from 11am on the day in the gym. Entrance is €20 and a limited number of T-shirts will be available to buy for €10.

Dundalk FC secured the first leg of a potential treble thanks to a nail-biting penalty shootout victory over Derry City FC on Saturday evening. Chris Shields was the hero of the hour with the big midfielder holding his nerve to tuck away the winning spot kick to give Dundalk a 6-5 victory on penalties after the game had finished 2-2 in normal time.

Vinny Perth’s all conquering side had to do it the hard way after falling behind twice to the Foylesiders in front of a packed Ryan McBride Brandywell stadium.

Dundalk were well represented in Derry with busloads of loyal supporters arriving en masse to cheer their team on in the driving rain.

Derry took the lead after just two minutes when David Parkhouse reacted quickest to a spill from Dundalk goalkeeper Aaron Mc-

Carey who couldn’t hold on to Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe’s shot.

Dundalk were denied an equaliser ten minutes later when former Lilywhites goalkeeper Peter Cherrie pulled off a great save to stop Michael Duffy’s goalbound header.

College facility named in honour of George Moore The memory of the late Dundalk business man, George Moore, was honoured at a special ceremony in UCD recently when an innovative business centred was named after him.

The new €20 million UCD Moore Centre for Business was opened by founding donor and business leader Angela Moore to honour the legacy of her late husband, entrepreneur, philanthropist and UCD alumnus Dr George G. Moore, who was remembered as one of the founding fathers of the data analytics industry.

Integrating fully with the UCD Lochlann Quinn School of Business across three levels, this expansive new wing increases the School’s physical space by close to 50%. Designed by leading architecture firm RKD, the UCD Moore Centre for Business brings a new generation of dynamic spaces and student experiences for the changing ways we live, learn and work.

Business leaders from Ireland and North America will join corporate partners, alumni, donors, students and staff to mark the launch of

Annual Brian Keenan Walk Slimming World opportunities takes place this weekend The 12th annual Brian Keenan Walk, which takes place on Saturday September 21, provides a great opportunity to get active and see the North Louth coast in all its autumnal glory.

Irish motorists back diesel to electric car scrappage scheme 40 per cent of Irish motorists would strongly support a scrappage scheme to swap diesel cars for electric cars. 33 per cent say that it would have a major influence on their decision when next they buy a car.

The results of an AA Ireland survey of over 7,000 Irish AA Members show that there are many thousands of drivers out there who are almost ready to switch to electric. This should come as good news to the State and to car makers because so far the take up of EVs in Ireland has been slow.

“EVs are only 2.6% of new car sales but that is a figure that is going to shoot upwards.” Says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan.

“Last year just over 1,000 were sold. This year that number looks likely to triple*.

The quality and variety of EVs at different prices and market segments is improving all the time.

But as of right now even with the state supports that are available an electric vehicle is just a bit too expensive for most motorists buying a new car.

“Irish motorists may not be buying too many pure electric cars yet but many of us want to and are just waiting for a nudge of help from the state.”

Says Faughnan. “The existing supports reduce the price by up to €5,000 and contribute €600 towards installing a charge point at home. That helps, and there are also the much lower running costs to think about, but if we want to turn the trickle into a flood the State needs to do more.”

The comments and feedback from the AA survey respondents show that reservations that people had about EVs’ like range anxiety and the availability of charge points, are disappearing as buy-

“The cars are less strange to the mainstream motorist now.” Says Faughnan. “AA has invested in specialised AA Patrol vans to deal with EVs using charging technology that we have developed.

Those vans are already in use every day. When mobile phones came alone 20 years or so ago it took time to adjust. 12 years later we all had smartphones. Electric cars are coming to us in the same way.”

Irish motorists respond well to incentives. 12 years ago the best technology of the day for emission and air quality was diesel. The Irish government changed the basis for taxation from engine size to CO2 to favour clean diesels and sales went up immediately. Diesel is now the most common fuel for cars.

“You have to be fair to those people who took government at its word and invested their money in diesels.” Says Faughnan. “Drivers care hugely about the environment and will embrace new technology but it is important to treat them properly and encourage them along.”
