Concerns have been raised locally over proposals by Warrenpoint Port to dump dredge material from the sea bed at a site in the mouth of Carlingford Lough that could have a serious effect on marine life. The Port currently carries out a major dredging programme every two to five years with material disposed of in the Irish Sea. However, new plans have been put forward to carry out dredging on a more regular but smaller scale, with material placed at a site in the mouth of Carlingford Lough between Cranfield Point and Greencastle. There has been concern locally about what impact this will have with Margaret
McCarthy from the Sub Aqua Club citing damage to marine life as a major worry. Warrenpoint Harbour are proposing to dredge the harbour and dump the material at the mouth of the Lough. This would be of great concern as it would potentially have a serious impact on marine life and activities in the lough. They are holding a public consultation event in Warrenpoint Town Hall today (September 19) from 4pm to 7pm. “Currently the disposal site is 15 miles out from the port.
