A local athlete is facing the ultimate challenge by taking on what has been described as the most grueling and toughest race on the planet. Annagassan man Brian Bell is battling for top spot in the ‘Yukon Arctic Ultra 2014’ and all in an effort to raise money for charity. Brian is in third place at present in the event where competitors must travel 300 miles across the Arctic pulling all their supplies and equipment they need behind them on a pulk. All this is done in temperatures of -30 degrees. 50-year-old Brian, originally from Wexford, has lived in Annagassan for

years and decided to run the race to raise funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. A keen extreme athlete, Brian is being sponsored by Pugwash Bay Childcare and Montessori which is owned by his wife Sharon. While most of us were hoping for a mild winter Brian was urging temperatures to plummet as he prepared for the big race by training in the Cooley mountains pulling tyres across the rough terrain. Lorna Clarke, managing director of Pugwash Bay, who is following Brian's journey has expressed her delight with his progress so far and hopes he will complete the race on Friday. Tommy Mac painting in charity auction Talented Dundalk artist Michael Duffy has generously offered to auction his painting of Dundalk FC legend Tommy McConville with all proceeds going directly to the North Louth Hospice. Tommy who passed away in October is generally considered to be one of the finest footballers this country has ever produced and according to Michael it was a privilege to be able to create a painting in his honour.
